  • Due to COVID-19, many people are considering alternatives to flights and hotels for travel.
  • A camper van is an increasingly alluring proposition for an affordable, socially-distanced vacation.
  • We break down types of camper vans and the best camper van rentals to consider.

Insider Today

There's no denying the fact the travel landscape continues to evolve as we adapt to the ongoing pandemic. With plenty of perceived risks associated with both boarding a plane  or booking a hotel , people are turning to alternatives to vacation closer to home.

An RV rental is one such way forward as your wheels, lodging, and dining are all relegated to one controlled space. However, they tend to be difficult to drive, sometimes too large for campgrounds, and pricey when it comes to fuel.

For an equally convenient way to travel with more flexibility, consider the camper van.

Like larger RVs and motorhomes, a camper van offers travelers increased levels of control over their environments. The best camper van is a self-contained living pod with sleeping, washing, and cooking facilities all onboard. They allow easy access to socially distant spots in nature, are easier to drive, better on fuel, and can slip into most campgrounds without problems.

Finding the right camper van can be a challenge, though, as there exists a wide range of potential renting (and buying) options. Below are four of the best camper van rental services we've found based on reputation, customer satisfaction levels, specialties, all-around value, and fleet offerings.

At the bottom of this guide, we've also included answers to a few FAQs , as well as tips and recommendations for first-timers .

camper van travel rental

Pros : A well-established company with a good number of locations and excellent customer service.

Cons : Some relatively older rental stock, but vans are regularly maintained.

C ompany info and locations : Founded in New Zealand in 2003, the company opened in the US in 2008 and now has 12 locations and 600 vehicles. Locations include Denver, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami, New York, Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Seattle, Calgary and Vancouver. Their vans have funky, painted exteriors and range from Jeeps up to large Newport campers.

COVID-19 policies : Enhanced, 80-point cleaning and detailing policies, facilities meeting CDC guidelines, minimizing customer contact (a contactless option will be offered from June 2020), flexible cancellation policies.

Typical rental costs : The Escape Mavericks package includes a camper van sleeping up to five people, priced at $35 per day for unlimited mileage in a Ford E-150 or Transit, with kitchen (stove, refrigerator). The price quote is for traveling out of Miami.

Pros : One of the cheaper rental options on the market.

Cons : Just two year-round locations. Entry-level vehicles are relatively basic.

Company info and locations : A family-owned business that has operated since 2007. Locations in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and also Salt Lake City (seasonally). The company bills itself as the budget option, and rents out mainly Dodge Grands and Ford E350 vans.

COVID-19 policies : Enhanced cleaning policies under CDC guidelines, minimizing contact with customers.

Typical rental costs : Wanderer camper van sleeps two people, from $83 per night, rentals include unlimited mileage and roadside assistance. The vehicle includes a full outdoor kitchen including stove and ice chest. The price is for traveling out of Los Angeles.

Rent a camper van from Lost Campers here

camper van travel rental

Pros : The place to rent from if retro-chic appeals to you, with some truly special vehicles in their fleet. The company is exceptionally knowledgeable and will happily help out with suggested itineraries.

Cons : The age of some of the vehicles means there are some restrictions on parts of the fleet in terms of range (some 100 miles per day limits) and restricted roads (some cannot drive up very steep inclines). There is just one location to rent from.

Company info and locations : This company has been specifically renting out vintage camper vans for over 14 years, and is based in Costa Mesa, California. Their fleet is exclusively restored VW camper vans from the 1970s and 1980s, with some less iconic but more modern vehicles as well, all with revamped interiors.

COVID-19 policies : Enhanced, stringent disinfecting procedures, particularly for 'high touch' points.

Typical rental costs : 1984 VW 'Lime Cello' Vanagaon sleeps four passengers with two sleeping berths (one a pop-top on the roof), from $169 per night, mileage conditions to be outlined at the time of booking. The vehicle includes a propane stove and refrigerator/icebox. The price quote is for traveling out of Costa Mesa.

Rent a camper van from Vintage Surfari Wagons here

camper van travel rental

Pros : The company rents out practical, no-frills vehicles and has a sizable fleet and good customer satisfaction ratings.

Cons : The vehicles have relatively few amenities and fans of luxury additions may find them on the sparse side.

Company info and locations : The company has been in business since 2009. Since starting out in Bozeman, Montana, they have expanded to four locations in Denver, Las Vegas, and Seattle. The company has been accredited with the Better Business Bureau since 2015 and holds an A+ rating.

COVID-19 policies : The company has instituted a comprehensive disinfecting program for each rental in accordance with CDC guidelines.

Typical rental costs : The Bunkhouse camper van sleeps up to four people (one large bed, two single bunks), from $128 per night, 500 prepaid miles for $180, and a $90 set up/preparation fee. Based on a Dodge Promaster van, it does not come with a stove or refrigeration. The price quote is for traveling out of Denver.

Rent a camper van from Campervan North America here

It's vital to check that you can park your camper van at the campground you intend to visit and check what facilities they have there.

Booking ahead is key due to increased demand. Overnight campsite and park fees with 'hookups' (electricity, water, bathrooms, and/or sewage disposal) typically range from $30 to $50 per night or more for the best quality grounds. Some older camper vans may not be suitable for roads with steep inclines, so check your proposed routes with the rental company at the time of booking.

Outside of campgrounds, it is also possible to find places to park (usually for limited amounts of time) without any facilities, either in remote areas or at designated spots. This is called 'dry camping' or 'boondocking' and is usually free of charge. You can find these locations on the website for the United States Forest Service or Campendium . This option is much easier for camper vans than it is for huge motorhomes.

There are other obvious preparation tips, such as having a full complement of water (some camper vans do not include running or potable water onboard), groceries, and other essentials. Many of the rental companies listed below have regularly-updated blogs and online resources that are well worth looking at if this is a first-time trip, and are all experts in their regions, and can help with suggested routes and campgrounds. We also suggest starting here with our favorite camper van accessories to make your trip exta comfy.

What's the difference between a motor home and a camper van?

Motor homes and camper vans both generally fall under the general definition of an RV.

A motor home is usually larger, built on a bus or truck chassis, and has a divider between the driver's cab and the living quarters, which include comfortable sleeping, cooking, and bathroom facilities.

A camper van is generally smaller, typically with no divide, and usually more basic. Many were not originally built to be self-contained living quarters and have been specially adapted and fitted to serve this purpose.

Are all camper vans the same?

Customers can choose from a range of outfitted vehicles, some with very basic facilities and some with rockstar levels of comfort but all offer flexibility, economic benefits, and control over the traveler's own environment. It's tricky to specify exact fuel economies for each type but for average-sized camper vans, around 20 miles per gallon is a good working average.

"Camper vans offer great gas mileage and can access the more restricted roads (that might be unavailable to larger motorhomes)," Kirby Sandberg said. "They also offer great maneuverability and visibility when driving, and you'll save big by having the option to camp instead of booking into hotels."

What kinds of camper vans are there?

Basic outfitted/converted camper vans: These are general-use vans like the Ford Transit that were not built for camping but which have been converted. Additions usually include basic sleeping quarters and storage for camping or biking gear, with more upscale models including a small kitchen or galley area with a refrigerator, sink, and running water. Composting toilets and propane-heated shower attachments for outdoor showering are also possible.

Purpose-made outfitted camper vans: These are usually newer-generation products built intentionally to be sold to travelers. They tend to be more luxurious with upgraded fixtures and fittings, made from comfortable materials, and feature nicely integrated electronics and plumbing facilities. Upper echelon versions have dining rooms and full bathrooms with showers, too. Brands of these include Winnebago, Volkswagen, and Airstream.

High-top outfitted camper vans: These vehicles typically come with a higher roof that's either been factory-fitted on the original vehicle or extended as part of a conversion. Think of this as added "attic'' space that can be used for sleeping quarters, storage space for camping, or adventure gear. Some variations include pop-up or semi-rigid tops, as well as those compatible with rooftop tents .

Driving rules in the U.S.

Driving in the USA is a unique and exciting experience and a fantastic way to explore the country, but it’s important to familiarize yourself with some key aspects before you set off on your journey. Traffic laws and regulations may vary slightly from state to state but there are common rules that apply throughout the country:

  • You must have a valid driver’s license if you plan to drive anywhere in the USA.
  • At four-way intersections with stop signs, the rule is first come, first served. If the order is unclear, the driver to the right generally has the right of way.
  • Right turns on red lights are allowed unless otherwise stated in a “No right on red’ sign.
  • School buses must not be passed when stopping to let off students. Pay attention to the flashing lights and stop sign to avoid heavy fines.
  • Parking is not allowed in any red zones, and blue parking is only Accessible Parking which requires a special parking pass. White parking zones are for loading and unloading and may be used to pick up or drop off passengers. Keep an eye out for any colors painted on curbs, as well as no parking signs including specific day street sweeping, when looking for parking.

Camping in the U.S.

Camping in the USA offers a vast array of scenic locations, from National Parks and forests to coastal campgrounds or remote wilderness areas, providing nature enthusiasts with endless opportunities to immerse themselves in the great outdoors.

  • State Campgrounds : They tend to be a little cheaper, are usually spacious, and often include a picnic table and private fireplace. The sanitary facilities vary and are not always included, but often have potable water and toilets.
  • Private Campgrounds : Usually have water and electrical hookups, as well as internet access, but are more expensive than state campgrounds.
  • Wild or Dispersed Camping : Allows you to save a lot of money and spend the night in very special places in the middle of nature, but have little to no amenities. Many National Forests and BLM land allow dispersed camping with Leave No Trace practices and other region-specific guidelines. In some states, dispersed camping is illegal without a camping permit so it’s best to check your travel destination in advance.

Insider tip: The campgrounds in National and State Parks are beautiful and usually very popular, especially during high season, so you might need to book your campground months in advance.

Popular events & festivals in the U.S.

Immerse yourself in American culture by attending special events during your camper van or Class C RV adventure. Here’s an annual overview of some popular events and celebrations:

  • Sundance Film Festival (January) : The largest independent film festival in the United States is held in Park City, Utah.
  • Mardi Gras (February) : Mardi Gras is a lively carnival held in New Orleans, Louisiana, which attracts over a million visitors each year.
  • Coachella (April) : The famous Indio music festival in California’s Coachella Valley draws music fans from around the world each year.
  • Independence Day (July) : On the 4th of July, America celebrates this holiday with parades and large-scale fireworks. Special festivities and barbeques are held in many places.
  • Burning Man (August) : For this festival, a temporary town is built each year in the Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada. The festival is known worldwide for its original costumes, its culture of giving, and its unique art.

Why Rent a Camper Van?

Renting a camper van can provide an elevated road trip experience by pairing some of the comforts of home with the freedom of the open road.

With a camper van, you’ll have everything you need with you including a bed, kitchen, indoor seating space, and in some cases, even a bathroom. There’s no need to set up camp and pitch a tent every night, so you’ll have the flexibility to camp in more places and will be able to move around more easily.

Plus, depending on where you want to travel, daily rental fees may be cheaper than a hotel room, and you can also save by cooking your own meals since most rental camper vans come with a sink, cooking equipment, fridge (or at least a cooler), and a stove.

Many people also rent a camper van to give van life a try before diving in and committing to buying a van themselves. It’s also a great way to test out a certain type of camper van model and layout to see if it’s the right fit for you.

Considerations for Renting a Campervan

With the growing popularity of van life, there are a growing number of camper van rental companies out there offering campervan rentals of all types for all budgets. That means you’ve got a good chance of finding a campervan rental at the right price for you.

Base pricing generally includes a certain number of daily miles (usually starting at 100 miles/day included, sometimes more) with an additional cost per mile if you go over.

Camper van rental companies often provide basics like bedding, camp chairs, a camp table, and cooking supplies although this varies and may not be included in some of the more budget campervan rentals. Most camper van rental companies also offer add-ons for an extra fee such as portable toilets, rooftop tents, and bike racks.

Be aware that you may need to pay a deposit and cleaning fee in addition to the rental fee, so be sure to read the company’s FAQs or discuss this with them before booking.

Seating & Sleeping Space

You’ll want to make sure the rental camper van you’re looking at can safely seat and sleep the number of people that you’ll be road tripping with. For example, some campervans have bench seating in the back, but these seats don’t always have seatbelts and aren’t meant to be used while driving.

Some campervan rentals offer a rooftop tent in addition to indoor sleeping space so you can have two separate sleeping areas. And some rental companies offer an add-on camping tent you can pitch if you need more sleeping space as well.

Read next: See the Best Campervan Layouts for Families to get some ideas on how to comfortably fit everyone.

Some camper van rental companies include a variety of amenities in their rental fee, and some offer them as add-ons for an additional fee . Make sure you’re clear on what’s included in the price so you can plan accordingly.

From a fully stocked kitchen with a stove, cookware, and dishes to camp chairs, an outdoor table, and bedding, some camper van rentals come with all the amenities you need to cook and relax on your road trip.

On the other hand, some budget rental campervans are a little more bare bones so you’ll need to bring camping, cooking, and sleeping supplies with you.

You generally pay for what you get, so if you need the convenience of having all the amenities supplied (for example, if you’re flying to your destination and you don’t want to deal with bringing everything with you), then you’ll want to look for a campervan rental company who provides everything you need.

If you’ll be picking up a camper van near home and can load it up with everything you need for your trip, you can likely save some money by bringing your own gear.

Read next: For a full list of recommendations with photos and descriptions, check out my Van Life Essentials Guide .

Bathroom Facilities

Some camper van rentals come complete with a shower and toilet (usually a porta potty), and some don’t. If a bathroom is a must for you, make sure this is something you look for when searching for rentals, but be aware you’ll likely pay a little more as well.

If you plan to camp at campgrounds where bathrooms and showers are readily available, you can likely go without these luxuries and save some money. And if you plan on finding free campsites without facilities, you can likely get by with a portable shower and portable toilet system if you don’t mind roughing it a little.

We’ve noticed that most camper van rental companies will allow dogs for an additional fee , although there is one company on our list below that lets dogs join the adventure for free, and there are a few who don’t allow them at all.

Be sure to look into this before booking if you plan on road tripping with your dog .

Age Requirements

You must be at least 21 years old to rent an RV or camper van in the US .

Many campervan rental companies charge an additional fee for drivers who are under the age of 25 due to additional insurance costs.

When looking into renting a camper van, you’ll want to look into insurance requirements and pricing as well. Some camper van rental companies include insurance in their daily rates, while some add on an additional daily fee for insurance .

Most camper van rental companies do not allow you to be covered by your personal auto policy or credit card for campervan rentals . This is because most basic auto policies do not cover campervans that are classified as Class B RVs. Be sure to check with your insurance company prior to booking a campervan rental and ask specifically if your policy includes Class B RV coverage.

One Way Campervan Rentals

Depending on your road trip plans, you may want to start in one location and end in another to make the most of your time and avoid backtracking. If that’s the case, check with the campervan rental company to see if they charge an additional fee for one-way rentals.

In some cases, we’ve seen rental companies offer discounts on certain one way routes when they need a van transported from one location to another – that’s something to look out for as well.

Peer-to-Peer Camper Van Rentals

With the rising popularity of van life, there are now a handful of peer-to-peer campervan rental companies where people rent out their own campervans – kind of like Airbnb but for camper van rentals. This allows owners to earn extra income by renting out their campervans when they’re not using them, and it gives travelers the chance to pick from a variety of campervan models, layouts, and interior designs.

These peer-to-peer campervan rental sites allow you to easily search for campervans available in your area or in the area you plan on traveling to.

Peer-to-peer camper van rental companies you’ll find on our complete list below include Outdoorsy and GoCamp . The rest of the companies on our list are all camper van rental companies that own a fleet of converted campervans.

How Much Does a Camper Van Rental Cost?

Camper van rentals can cost anywhere from $33 per day to upwards of $500 per day . Those rates often don’t include insurance or additional amenities you may want for your road trip. But the good news is, there are budget camper van rentals available if that’s what you’re looking for.

A few budget-friendly camper van rental companies you’ll find on our list below include:

Escape Campervans

  • Lost Campers
  • Voyager Campervans

CamperVanGuy will outfit you with the van and gear if starting your trip in the Los Angeles area.

Thanks, Jody! We weren’t aware of CamperVanGuy, looks like a neat company for those starting in LA! Thanks for posting.

Wow I didn’t know there were so many good options! I’m hoping to do a US Road trip sometime next year, and can’t wait to explore a bit more of my own country

Check out Simple Campers in the SF Bay Area for camper vans that offer a variety of amenities. Including, unlimited mileage, one way rentals, pop tops, wifi, and more.

Thanks for the tip, Mav!

A great campervan alternative we found is Pacific Overlander (www.pacificoverlander.com). Their vehicles are totally tricked out and got us through the southwest without having to think about campsite reservations at all. Opened up a whole new way to do our road trips. Highly recommended!

Great to hear! Thanks for the rec!

Great post, Kim! Thanks for sharing. Looks like you might need a bay area company on this list 😉 I recently launched Outervan, a handcrafted campervan rental company.

Hey Lindsey! Thanks so much for reaching out. Drop me an email @ [email protected] with more details about Outervan.

your idea for adventure in campervan is great. campervan is famous for long road trip with other drinking and eating services. i really like this because you talk about adventure.

This is to say that it was really-really well and truly nice to read such kind of posts. You have to say that it should be continue to posts the blogs like this. Thanks

I am looking to rent for a minimum of 6 months; do you know which companies may provide the best rates for More long term ventures? I am primarily concerned with finding comfort at a low price. LOst camper appears to Ben a good option. Was wondering if you knew of any companies specifically geared towards this end.

Many campervan and RV rental companies will offer discounts for long-term rentals. I recommend reaching out to some companies and asking what discounts they can offer you for a 6+ month rental.

Anything in colorado springs?

Not entirely sure – I’d recommend doing a google search or trying Outdoorsy. There are definitely campervan rental companies elsewhere in Colorado including Denver if you aren’t able to find anything in Colorado Springs. Good luck!

Anything in St. Louis?

Hmmm… not sure!

Would like to take aroad trip in April 2021 from Texas to Las Vegas, need help in finding a company to rent camper van in my area

I’m trying to find a one way Class B rental starting in either Los Angeles or Phoenix and ending up near Glacier National Park in Montana – having a hard time finding a company that has a drop off point near Glacier

Nee to this Camper Van life! Intrigued and ready to take to the next level. Can someone recommend a good place to start as a beginner? I would love to learn, and be aware of “I wish I woulda known?” questions. Lucy!

Hi Lucy – we have a ton of resources and blog posts on Van Life how-tos. Check out our Van Life Course homepage . Our Van Life 101 guide also answers a lot of questions for people just starting out.

Great list but you HAVE to not forget the South and specifically sCAMPervan in Atlanta, Georgia and Asheville, North Carolina. What an original and unique brand and collection of vans to rent loaded with all the goods and necessities as well as rooftop tents. scampervan.com

Thanks for that tip, Jonathan, we’ll look into adding them!

Hello! I’m flying into Reno and I’m looking for a camper van such as these, anyone know of a location near Reno/Lake Tahoe? Thanks, much appreciated ☺️

Vancation.com has 3 or 4 campervan rentals in Reno!

Looking to rent a camper van to travel from around Dallas Texas to Southern Florida. Any recommendations?

Hmm, not familiar with the Dallas area. Maybe someone else can chime in!

I have a Thor Tellaro pop top pro master class b. I live in Idaho. I am hoping to rent it out for winter (late Fall to early Spring) in the Southwest USA.

How might I find a company to manage the rental for me?

Check out the company Outdoorsy

Looking for a Campervan like VW, Dodge or Chevy for 2 adults & 1 baby. Pick up and return should be Los Angeles. Any reccommandations?

Would it be cheapest to rent a cargo van from Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, or some other company for a few weeks and turn it into a temporary camper?

You can always buy an inflatable mattress, manual pump, camping stove, styrofoam cooler, cheap pillow, and maybe some cheap black out material that you can tape to the windows at night.

When done, you can mail the camping stove (minus the fuel), mattress, the pump, and tape back to your residence.

Hi Rob, I think many people like the ease & luxuries that come with renting an already built-out van, but your idea is definitely a possibility. Another option to save money is to look at one-way campervan relocations – they are usually last minute and you have to find your way home, but one of our team members has traveled this way before and loved it.

Don’t forget vancation.com, the newest campervan rental marketplace. Zero owner service fees if you join early and the best feature set to manage your listing.

Thanks for the tip!

Thanks! Appreciate the research and information on van rentals that covers a good chunk of the country

It’s nice to see these resources are available, but there are none for where I live. Not much in the way for Missouri I guess, and having lived here 95% of my life so far, I can say that the landscape is beautiful here (the people not so much lol). Maybe someday there will be a van rental place available here, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

I’d recommend checking out Outdoorsy, RV Share, or Campanda since those are all rentals by owner and can be located anywhere in the US (like Airbnb for van rentals). Best of luck!

I’m sad to see Dallas/Ft Worth area not served on your list. Any ideas? Thanks,

Hi Melissa, I’m unfamiliar with any rental companies in that area, but I’d recommend checking out Outdoorsy, RV Share, or Campanda since those are all rentals by owner and can be located anywhere in the US (like Airbnb for van rentals). Best of luck!

The best resource. Thank you.

Glad you found it helpful, Eugene!

So stoked to have found your site! You rock!

Thanks Stacy!!

Wow you missed Florida Oldscool Campers. Our family loved our trip!

Thanks for the recommendation – we’ll have to check them out!

Hi Sonya! Keys Westys has the largest inventory of Westfalias on the East Coast, including Florida!

This is a great resource, thank you! Is appears that “Escape’ is the only company that operates one-way small camper vans coast to coast — in my case, I need northeast to northwest? Is that true as far as you know? Thank you.

Hi Pam, glad you found this helpful! We’ve never personally used these rental companies (all of our team owns campervans) so I can’t speak to the one-way coast-to-coast rentals, unfortunately. Good luck with your search!

You should add Keys Westys VW Camper Van Rental in the Florida Keys to this article! Keys Westys offers a fleet of vintage and classic VW Westaflia “Westys” for rent for adventures up and down the iconic 113-mile Overseas Highway. The iconic, “instagrammable” pop-top campers sleep four people on two levels, have on-board refrigerators and even slide-out camping air conditioners to deliver the glam to this level of glamping! Vintage ‘Westys’ of Keys Westys include cute models like the 1971 Westy “Hey Mickey” and the 1978 Westy “Key Lime Pie” to the 1980 Westy “Cotton Candy” and 1982 Westy “Cookie Monster”. Several are spotlighted on the Keys Westys website, as well as fan sites online. Keys Westys also offers several more modern VW Eurovan Westfalias, in a rainbow of colors, also sporting refrigerators and slide-out camping air conditioners. Each rental also includes a linens bin of sheets, towels, pillows and pillow cases for four persons – as well as a camping bin of incidentals for cooking and camping, including cutlery, plates, cups and more. Keys Westys’ rental rates start at $130 per day, and renters can add on things like inflatable paddle boards, camp sites at several award-winning state parks from the company’s inventory of its self-guided tour and more. Airport pick up and drop off to Keys Westys’ Islamorada location is also available. And, if you are driving down to pick up your Westy, you can leave your car at their gated facility while you adventure – at no additional charge. Keys Westys has a rich history in the Keys, and offers a broad range of information to plan your Florida Keys adventure, including snorkeling, to nature trails, “Campgrounds We Love” and more. Keys Westys can be found online or be reached at 786-326-6763.

Thanks for the info, Michelle!

Wanted to say thanks for featuring Boho Camper Vans as one of your go-to camper van companies! We’re grateful!

Just wanted to say that things have changed a lot for us in the past couple of years, and we’re currently running a fleet of twelve 2021-2022 Promasters (we found those old Econolines were just a liiiiiittle too tight). Our designs have evolved and our vans have grown but we’ve maintained that same “cabin on wheels” kind of feel.

Hi Ryan, thanks for letting us know! Do you have any updated photos and a blurb that we can update our post with? Please email me at contact[at] bearfoottheory.com

Wandervans is also a great option for affordable van rentals or builds. Locations in Boise, Spokane/CDA, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Vegas, Phoenix, and Duluth. Great article, thanks for getting all of these options out there!

Moterra Campervan At Dusk in Joshua Tree National Park

We got a high roof for a week and traveled from California to Utah (and back). We are avid campers and love backcountry, so this was the best of both worlds. To be able to comfortably disperse camp/boondock was a true luxury. The van was so thoughtfully designed and even though we brought some of our own gear, we hardly had to use any of it since they truly think of everything. We only had to troubleshoot once on the trip, and the Moterra team was quick and responsive to help us out. Such a special trip, can’t wait for the next! – Rose Kang

Camping Picnic Table Lit At Night

We are so happy we chose to rent a camper van from Moterra! We had an excellent experience from time of booking, through the end of our trip. The staff was extremely responsive to my emails and the overview of the van upon pick up, was very helpful. We would absolutely recommend this company to anyone looking to take a camping vacation without having the pack all the gear. We can’t wait for our next Moterra adventure! – Kelsey Aarrestad

Pair of Moterra Sprinter Campervans on Bryce and Zion National Parks Road Trip

We rented three vans with two other couples to visit Bryce and Zion and it was so fun! Definitely recommend!

For our itinerary, we worked with Erin. She got us great campground reservations and helped us fill our trip with activities we were interested in, really helping us to make the most of every day. She suggested several things we never would have thought to do on our own. And, anytime we had a question that required some local knowledge, she always had a good answer for us.

Alex showed us how to use our vans. They are incredibly well thought out and we were amazed at all the comfort and convenience that are packed into them. They are almost as easy to drive as a car and we used them to the max. It was a little bit of a learning process but it was also great to feel so self-sufficient – everything you need is right there in your vehicle! Anytime we did have a question we called Alex and he was very responsive. – Ian Lovejoy

We rented kuga camper for 3 weeks. It was the best journey we could imagine and it is the best way to visit National Parks, you just have your home on wheels and it gives you so much flexibility on your trip. Everything was perfect, camper, equipment and customer service provided from Alfonso was excellent.

We drove over 8,000 miles and were on the road for 28 days in March 2022. We absolutely loved our Kuga van and made memories that will last a lifetime! We were already avid campers probably intermediate at best before our trip but thanks to Travellers Autobarn for the opportunity to rent one of their vehicles!

Russell and Alfonzo were AMAZING!! So helpful and friendly and made our drop off the best experience! They had great recommendations and made the whole process so smooth.

Fantastic! Super friendly team at the LA USA branch made our van rental super easy. The van never skipped a beat and best of all, no mileage restrictions. Highly recommend, will be back! 10/10.

Great value and service. Alfonso is also the best and super helpful. Definitely going to come back again in the future.

We had the van for 5 weeks and travelled across the US. We managed to get everywhere we wanted with our Travellers Autobarn Van. It's super comfy and cozy inside and the small kitchen was perfect to cook dinner along the roads.

We had an amazing trip with the Kuga Van. It was perfect and fit our needs. It was our home for 2 months ? Price was very good and there was no trouble when we brought it back. Thanks to Russel, Alfonso and Sam for the trip ;-)

I couldn't have thought of a better way to do our road trip. Travellers Autobarn made our renting experience so easy and fast. Russell provided great customer service and explained the ins and outs of the van in a simple manner. We will definitely rent from Autobarn again.

Rented a campervan for about 3 months and travelled through 13 states with their Kuga van. Travellers Autobarn is no doubt the best rental company to book a van through. The unlimited miles and the low price can’t be beat. The staff is incredibly helpful and nice. We’ll definitely rent from them in the future again.

I rented a Kuga from them for four weeks, from the minute I arrived, Russel was extremely helpful with all my questions and concerns. I initially had the van for two weeks but extended my trip half way through as I was having such a great time. The van was great! When I dropped it off, they were great and I can't wait

Campervan and RV Rental in the USA

Although campervanning is popular throughout the world, nowhere is it more engrained in the culture than in the United States! The US is the perfect place to rent a campervan or RV and hit the road.

The idea of the iconic American road trips still attracts people from far and wide, all wanting to experience the splendor of its many landscapes. Curiosity draws in local and international crowds to all the wonders that can be found throughout the country. The US has a great sense of adventure and a love for the outdoors, making it the perfect place to enjoy a road trip.

National Parks in the USA

One of the main reasons people rent a campervan or an RV to visit the USA is, without a doubt, its amazing natural beauty. It's because of this that one of the main things to do in the USA is to go visit its numerous national parks .

Places like Yellowstone National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, Zion National Park, Glacier National Park, Yosemite National Park , and Grand Teton National Park are all must-visit places to visit and enjoy on a campervan road trip.

USA's Coastline, Lakes, and Rivers

Other main attractions in the US are the many beaches, lakes, and rivers throughout the country. Renting a campervan or an RV gives you the possibility to see different spots with all the comforts of home.

In the continental United States of America, the most amazing beaches can be found in California and Florida . Some of these are Malibu, Half Moon Bay, Laguna Beach, Big Sur, Sanibel Island, Clearwater beach, Naples, Miami Beach, and Key West.

The USA also has some of the most breathtaking lakes in the world, surrounded by natural beauty. You can jump in your rented campervan or RV and drive to one of these stunning lakes like Lake Powell ( Arizona and Utah ), Lake Havasu ( Arizona ), Hanging Lake ( Colorado ), and Mono Lake (California).

All over the United States, there are numerous rivers where you can take on many activities like fishing, swimming, kayaking, and bird watching. Rent your campervan and explore one of these well-known river locations like the Colorado River (Arizona), Animas River (Colorado), Trinity River (California), and Eel River (California).

Campgrounds in the USA

No matter where you go in the US, we recommend you find a campground near you . Make sure to contact campgrounds to find the camping spots that will best fit your needs. Remember that some campgrounds in the USA need to be booked ahead of time. With some campgrounds, especially during high season, you'll have to get in touch with them months in advance, while others follow the "rule of first come, first served".

One-ways Available in the USA

With Indie Campers, it is also possible to rent your campervan or RV and drive across the USA through our many pick-up locations. One-ways allow you to pick up your campervan or RV in one of our many locations and drop it off in another one.

Camper van rental tips

W e’re still learning after our third camper van rental trip in as many years. Here are some tips we’ve gleaned from our own experience and from authorities such as authors (and part-time RVers) Marc and Julie Bennett:

  • Try several websites and read dozens of RV listings. Monitor the reviews closely. A main reason I chose our Mercedes Sprinter for this trip were the five-star reviews of owner Maher Boulos’s van, as well as extensive photos and clear descriptions.
  • Make a list of what is important to you. For us, right at the top is an indoor shower and plumbed toilet.
  • Where are you going and what services are available along the way? If you will be off grid for a day or longer, make sure the van has plenty of battery and water tank capacity.
  • Height matters. If you’re tall, a pop-up may not be adequate. Even more importantly, know how tall your rental vehicle is and keep an eye out for low bridges, especially in the Northeast.
  • Keep some flexibility in scheduling. Camping spots often open up from cancellations about 48 hours ahead. The Bennetts also like the websites www.arvie.com and www.spot2nite.com for finding last-minute reservations.
  • Examine fees closely. Cleaning fees vary widely, as do charges for pickup and dropoff at airports or other locales. Many van owners limit renters to 100 free miles per day, but per-mile charges after that can differ, and add up quickly.
  • Camper vans can feel tight. If the weather sours or nerves are beginning to fray, consider a short stay in a hotel or Airbnb.

“Don’t get stuck inside this van for days in the pouring rain,” Julie Bennett said. “If it feels too small take a day or two in a hotel to break it up.”

We’re still learning after our third camper van rental trip in as many years.

Campervan Rental in Denver: The Best Companies

Denver, Colorado is a great jumping off point for a campervan vacation because of its city highlights and surrounding natural beauty.

camper van travel rental

The Mile High City is surrounded by thousands of acres of wilderness with nine state parks a short drive from downtown Denver. Hundreds of campgrounds, RV parks, and campsites are located in and around The Front Range, a 200-mile corridor from Pueblo, Colorado, to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Colorado National Monument, several national forests, and other wilderness areas welcome campervans. The proximity to the city allows access to great dining and entertainment away from the fire ring. To help you find the best camper rental, we have selected what we consider the best RV rental agencies servicing Denver. Here are our picks.

Escape Camper Vans

Escape Camper Vans has 11 locations and has been in the rental business for more than 16 years. Distinguishable by their family-friendly exterior designs, the company allows up to four drivers per vehicle, 24-hour roadside assistance, and both round-trip and one-way options. Escape Camper Vans was founded by Rob Mewton, an entrepreneur, surfer, and traveler from New Zealand. The USA branch opened in 2009.

Escape Camper Vans rents 5 styles of vehicles. The Santa Cruz and the Jeep Camper can sleep two. The adventurous Jeep Camper lets drivers explore and when it is time to sleep the rooftop bedroom opens. (These vehicles are not available in Denver.) Renters in Denver can choose the Maverick, Mesa, or Del Mar. The Maverick and the Mesa are hard-top units with space to sleep up to 5 with a rooftop sleeper. Both units have kitchen fit outs and dual battery systems. Rates are less than $128 per day. The pop-top Del Mar is “big adventure” for up to 5 people and is described as “the ultimate package for travel enthusiasts.” Along with room to stand when the top is up, this vehicle comes with amenities like a foldaway table and benches, an outside two-burner stove, and Bluetooth capabilities. Special rates are as low as $127 per day.

Outdoorsy is a peer-to-peer marketplace for RV owners to connect with renters. Owners advertise and rent their vehicles to anyone who needs a short-term vehicle. Multiple sizes and style vehicles are available, from single unit trailers to spacious vehicles accommodating larger groups. When we searched for campervans in Denver, we found many options available for pick-up across the area.

As a popular camping destination, Denver’s search turned up over 100 campervan options. One of the newest selections available is a 2022 Leisure Travel Unity. The unit features a rear Murphy bed, a residential-style sectional lounge sofa, and floor-to-ceiling windows. The galley offers a flip-down extension for more prep and serving space, a convection microwave oven, a flush mount LP cooktop, and is stocked with cookware and utensils. This unit can run on solar, too, and is priced at $325 per day. When it comes to uniqueness, the 2021 Titan / Bliss Mobil XD4400 is like a campertank. This is perfect for off-grid camping and runs $630 per day.

Rocky Mountain Campervans

Rocky Mountain Campervans encourages everyone to “be a traveler, not a tourist.” This American company has locations in Denver and Las Vegas and specifically welcome those who are coming to the area to attend music festivals. Rentals are available year-round. Rocky Mountain Campervans offers seven vehicle types for rental. The largest vehicle in the fleet is the pop-top Winnebago Solis. Equipped with a sofa bed, this model seats 6 passengers, and can sleep 4 comfortably.
