Is Celebrity right for you?  Let’s discuss it!

If you like a little luxury, you can get more of it for less money on Celebrity than almost any other cruise line. The most luxurious cruise lines can cost up to $5000 a person for a seven-day cruise in a balcony cabin, while the price of a similar cruise on Celebrity is often only $1000.

Our experienced opinion is that while Celebrity’s ships and cabins, overall, may not be significantly better than the newer ships and cabins on the other bigger, less expensive lines, their reputation and slightly higher prices do seem to attract a more sophisticated and cultured cruiser. So if the caliber of the other passengers is something that matters to you – definitely consider Celebrity.

While Celebrity ships are the same size as the other big cruise lines whose ships hold an average of 2000 passengers (Carnival, Royal, Holland, Norwegian, MSC or Oceania), Celebrity’s luxury and style are in a class of their own.

Celebrity succeeds in setting a higher standard with lots of little things they call “tastes of luxury” that include: welcome champagne and mimosas, cold towels and free sorbet poolside, expanded dining options like a sushi cafe, sunset yoga and pilates classes and more.

Celebrity was the first to create a park at sea with their “Lawn Clubs” that includes a green grassy half acre where folks can hang out and ponder as they look out over the high seas. The only drawback, it’ll make you miss walking your dog.

  • They have Broadway shows, European-style circuses, and dance shows

All about Celebrity Cruise Line’s kid’s programs

Although it is a luxury, sophisticated cruise line, Celebrity has an extensive kids’ program geared to five separate age groups that are supervised by experienced youth staff members. In the onboard youth center for ages 3-11 called the Fun Factory. Activities go from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and include gaming technology, sports, crafts, music, karaoke, treasure hunts, theme parties, movies, and more.

Babysitting is available anytime for an additional fee. Parents can choose to dine kid-less every night of the cruise, thanks to the kids’ only Dinner Party where the kids are fed and fully supervised from 5 to 7 p.m. every night.

Clearly, on your Celebrity cruise, you can have as much or as little “family togetherness” as you choose! Celebrity cruise lines are always innovating their kid’s program. Currently, the teens are using go-pros, the kids have dance parties with their parents, there are Xbox stations, and there is even an Autism friendly program.

For all children between the ages of 6 months and 17 years, Celebrity entertainment staff is available for Fun Factory programs every day from 9:00 am until 10:00 pm.

Children’s entertainment is free and is organized by age group:

X-Club:12-17 years old,

Ensigns: 9-11 years old,

Cadets: 6-8 years old,

Shipmates: 3-5,

and Babies: 6 months-36 months old.

The Fun Factory and the Teen Center are both open on port days as well from 12:00 – 2:00 pm for a fee of $6. Note: Group babysitting and in the stateroom, babysitting are both available on Celebrity. Group babysitting is available in the Fun Factory for kids 3-11 for $6 per child, and in the teen space for free from 10:00 pm to 1:00 am.

In-stateroom babysitting costs approximately $19 per hour for up to three children within the same family and is not available for children under 1 year. It is available on a first come first serve basis.

Most cruise lines only allow you to book a maximum of four people in a cabin. If you have more people traveling, you will most likely need multiple cabins. The way to use our website would be to enter the number of people you would like to have in your first cabin ONLY to check rates and availability. Costa Cruises is an Italian-based cruise line with origins that impressively date back to the 19th century.

The company has since been bought out by Carnival yet continues to remain a major cruise line.

The company originates from Naples and has since become the largest privately held cruise line in the world.

MSC Cruises is the fourth largest cruise company in the world, only behind Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Its current fleet includes: Lirica class, Musica class, Fantasia class, Meraviglia class, and Seaside Class.

MSC Cruises has a very dependable military discount offered year-round.

The cruise line provides 10% off your next trip. Balcony, Suite, and MSC Yacht Club Deluxe Suites are available for 10% off.

Meanwhile, Interior staterooms and Ocean View rooms are available with 5% off.

Additionally, military personnel can book multiple rooms under the same discount.

MSC Cruises will also provide full credit in the event of redeployment.

Kids (11 and under) sail free on select sailing dates.

The offer is open to active duty and retired U.S. and Canadian service members.

The special offer is also good for spouses, parents, in-laws, and dependent children of military personnel.

The cruise line requests that you call 1-877-665-4655 to receive the MSC Cruises military discount.

When you book your trip ask about the Military and Civil Service Discount to receive 5% or 10% off your next vacation.

3. Norwegian Cruise Line

celebrity cruise military discount

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is often shortened to Norwegian.

The company dates back to the 1960s, and unlike most cruise lines is originally from the United States, despite the name of the company.

Norwegian is the third-largest cruise line in the world based on number of passengers.

Consequently, it offers more than 10 different types of ships and various places of travel.

Related Article: 9 Car Rental Military Discounts

Despite Norwegian being one of the biggest cruise lines in the world, and also originally from the United States, it does not feature a year-round military discount.

However, we were able to find a side promo offer featured through iCruises .

The current promotion provides members of the military and their families with 10% off the next cruise.

However, we are not sure how long the offer will remain so it’s wise to take advantage of it as soon as possible!

Norwegian Cruise Line is also a partner with Veterans Advantage .

If you are a member of VA you can find exclusive deals through its website.

Though Norwegian does not have a military discount offered directly through the cruise line, you can find special deals on other websites.

Norwegian also introduces seasonal, special offers from time to time geared primarily for service members.

We also recommend checking out third-party travel sites for exclusive deals.

The $250 free onboard spending can get applied to a number of different amenities, including Lotus Spa treatments, dining, specialty gifts, and clothing.

The amount of onboard free spending credit you will receive depends on the length of stay:

  • $50 = 6 days or less

  • $250 = 14 days or longer

The Princess Cruises military discount can also get combined with other special offers from the cruise line.

However, you cannot use it on casino credit or charges.

In order to receive the free onboard spending credit, you need to download and complete the Military Benefit Application Form .

You must submit the completed form and proof of military status in plenty of time.

Princess Cruises will not accept any application that is received less than 14 days from the date of departure.

The application can get submitted by emailing [email protected] , or FAX: 661-753-1394.

Question about military discounts

My girlfriend's ex-husband was retired military.  Great guy, actually.  She has a U.S. Govt military ID, full on base privileges and all of that.  She's said that she sacrificed a lot for the military and her (then) husband as she often had to raise her son on her own, or sometimes, move around the world on short notice. We did get a military discount on another cruise line but do you know if Celebrity would offer a military discount under these circumstances?

Celebrity and Royal Caribbean have military pricing or military rates on the proverbial select categories of select sailings; they don't have a blanket military discount. For instance, on a dummy booking for October, there's a $280 military discount with a non-refundable deposit for a verandah; didn't price with a refundable deposit,

Qualification looks more complicated than I remember. From one current offer:

At least one guest in the stateroom must be an active, retired or veteran member of the United States or Canada Military.

Which would seem to exclude her, although it seems they've also offered deals where the military member didn't have to be present in the past. I've never heard of anyone being asked for an ID or a DD214 (discharge form), but you just don't know...

There used to be a long blurb on their website where you had to have had at least 2 years active duty or 6 months in a war zone, etc., but no, spouses or ex-spouses don't qualify.

FWIW, on some sailings they were giving $100 military discount up front, but the cost of the cruise was between $4-5K.

The Veteran qualifies for the discount. Ex and surviving dependents do not qualify for the discount.

Thanks

Agree. I've never been asked to provide or show a copy of my DD214. I always take a copy on our cruises just in case. Celebrity and RC should follow Princess lead. Princess requests a copy of your DD214 one time to put in your profile. Then it's on record for all future bookings.

Like

A side note, the DD 214 is your official military record and shows your full military history.  Your discharge papers are a DD 256.   The DD 214 will provide the numbers of days of active duty, the DD 256 simply says you were honorably discharged.  I have a DD 256 but no DD 214 because I was a reservist for a short time in 1970 but prior knee injuries flared up as soon as I enlisted and I was medically discharged after a few meetings and two weeks of summer camp.  I never served a day of active duty so no DD 214.

Just as an FYI, MSC is the cruise line we received a military discount on.  Apparently, family members are included.

Take Advantage of Our Military Discount

Those that qualify include active and retired U.S. and Canadian Military personnel, including U.S. Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy, Coast Guard, National Guard, Army Reserve and Department of Defense personnel.

Our military discount includes active and retired military personnel, plus family members including spouses, parents, in-laws and dependent children. You can apply your discount to  multiple staterooms . Note: the member/employee must cruise with immediate family in order to receive the discount.   There are  ZERO penalties for redeployment  - 100% future cruise credit will be good for two years from cancellation (must be verified by a letter from a commanding officer). All you have to do is cancel no later than 15 days prior to the cruise departure.**

I have a DD214 Form, I keep it in my bank safety deposits box. I have a DMV ID Card with my Veteran status. Can I used this ID.

You must submit your DD214 Form to obtain a DMV Veteran ID Card and you must be a Honorably Discharged Veteran. Can I used this ID to apply for a cruise discount?

Whenever we could take advantage of the military discount, we HAVE HAD to show proof to the popular online agency a lot of people use.  This is done when making the original booking.  We email copies of our retired military ID cards to the agency.  Since we are both retired AF we always carry our ID's with us.

IMO, anyone requesting the military discount should be required to provide a copy of their DD214 to that booking agency in order to get the military discount. I have no issues providing or showing my DD214. Just never been asked by  RC, Celebrity, brick and mortar or any of the online TAs when booking. Only Princess and that was only one time. This past Sunday (24 January) I booked another Celebrity Cruise directly with Celebrity. I advised the Celebrity agent I would like the military discount and she applied it to the booking. Like for all past bookings no request from the agent to send a copy of my DD214 for the booking.

Correct. And the active duty, retired or veteran military member must be on the sailing as well.

The rules are spelled out on the X website.

In your case it appears MSC didn't even follow their own simple guidelines. 🙄  Your girlfriend being divorced from her husband should not have been given the military discount based on MSCs published guidelines.  As it should be. The 20/20/20 rule isn't extended to cruising.

All I can tell you is that we did explain the situation to the MSC agent and they said she was eligible.  They did request a copy of her government issued ID and reviewed it and said it was fine. If the employees say she's eligible, that's good enough for us.

She may be eligible with MSC, but not with Celebrity.  If you are so desperate for the military discount, book with MSC.

My father received a military discount several times with Celebrity.  He was never asked for any proof.  Always took his discharge papers.  FWIW the discount was usually $100.  Not much.

I have seen with Celebrity after final payment the military discount was a lot more than $100.  Of course, that was several years back.

hawkesbaynz

Unfortunately the thread seems to have unravelled but for info UK ex-military you can get 10% off fares excluding taxes. You must have a Defence Discount Card (received when discharge docuuments or MOD 90 presented) or indeed have a Blue Light Card for being NHS/Fire/Police. I know MSC do it for NHS but never enquired about cruising with them. Carnival just offer a bit of OBC.

To receive the Celebrity discount you have to book direct with Celebrity so that needs to be weighed up with TA discounts. The prices always seem similar anyway and I would not book with a third party until normalcy and cash flows return.

Maybe in the UK, but not in the US (my experiences). If I book a Celebrity cruise with a TA I've also ask for and received the military/veterans discount. The TA has to call Celebrity to get it applied to the booking. Most of our Celebrity cruises I book directly with Celebrity anyway. Just booked another cruise Sunday, 24 January.

Agree with above. No problem getting military discount booking thru' TA.

We did get a military discount on another cruise line but do you know if Celebrity would offer a military discount under these circumstances?

A spouse did not serve in the military...full stop. Someone either took the oath that included your life if necessary, or they didn't...simple as that.

Was that the $100 discount as offered to earlier poster or the 10% I receive, which is about $800 on my average 14 day cruise.

The $100pp Mil Discount was offered on the initial booking.  It didn't matter the length or cost of the cruise.

Celebrity and RC should follow Princess lead. Princess requests a copy of your DD214 one time to put in your profile. Then it's on record for all future bookings.

Not sure if you know this or not, you do have to renew this military option. On our recent reservation I noticed that the military OBC was not showing.  When checking with our TA and her contacting Princess, we had to reconfirm our information with Princess and then they acknowledged the military information and we got our credit.  We never received a notice from Princess, we just found out when checking our reservation.

Thanks for the updated info. Good to know. Our last Princess cruise was in 2010. My military/veterans discount still showed for our Princess cruises prior to 2010.

  18. Celebrity Military Discount

July 15, 2003. MI. #1. Posted May 14, 2014. Booked a Celebrity cruise for Nov 2014 months ago. Used my FCC and got a $250.00 OBC. However, yesterday I checked the price for the same Category and they had a Military and 55+ Discount. So, my TA called and this is what happened. My total cruise cost went down by $40/person or $80 for 2 of us.
