I've sailed alone on 4 cruise lines. Here are my top 5 tips for taking a solo cruise.
Posted: August 2, 2023 | Last updated: August 3, 2023
- I've traveled solo on four cruise ships during my time as a travel reporter with Insider.
- Taking a cruise alone can be freeing and convenient — if you know how to do it right.
- These are my five top tips for travelers who are considering going on a solo cruise.
Traveling alone on a cruise ship can be liberating, convenient, and cheap — so long as you know how to do it right.
If you're reading this, you're likely already interested in traveling by yourself. You should own this sense of independence: Going alone means you won't have to compromise your itinerary.
But if you're unsure how to approach a solo cruise trip, you've come to the right place. As a well-practiced solo traveler , these are my top five tips for people interested in doing just that.
My cruises have been inaugural sailings or trips exclusive to media and booking agents.
As a result, my trips have been paid for or discounted by cruise lines.
Because these are work trips, my schedule is often packed from morning to night.
But I always try to find time for myself. After all, there's nothing better than some alone time with unfettered ocean views.
And I've left feeling socially fulfilled despite going alone on some trips.
1. It should go without saying — embrace being alone. Don't be afraid to chat with new people.
If you feel anxious or insecure eating alone at a restaurant, you might feel that way for the first few days of the cruise.
But if there's anything my years of traveling alone have taught me, it's that nobody is judging you.
It could be daunting at first. But past this anxiety, cruising alone provides a great opportunity to make new friends. If you're there to mingle, head to the bars, pools, or even mini-golf courses .
2. If you prefer some quiet time, stay on the ship during port days.
Port days and the opportunity to explore new destinations are exciting.
But if your priority is having the ship's amenities to yourself, it's also one of the best days to stay put.
Because almost everyone leaves the ship during port days, you should have no problem securing a highly coveted pool chair.
The lounges, buffets, pools, and popular onboard amenities are nearly empty on port days. So if you want to lounge by a quiet pool with a book and no screaming children in sight, consider spending your port day on the vessel or heading back early.
3. Book your onboard dining as early as possible.
This tip applies to cruisers traveling in groups, too. If you cruise to eat, prioritize booking the specialty restaurants you care about. The sooner you do, the more likely you are to secure your top restaurants and dining times.
This tip applies to shows as well.
During my two-night media sailing on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, the nighttime comedy shows were almost completely booked when I boarded the ship.
The more proactive you are, the more likely you are to catch the shows you want to see.
4. Make sure the cruise line fits you.
Make the most of your trip by booking a cruise line compatible with your interests. Do your research: Cruise lines target different demographics.
If you're looking for a quiet, peaceful children-free retreat, for example, consider avoiding a Disney cruise.
Instead, opt for the adults-only Virgin Voyages or Celebrity Cruises .
5. Check for single-supplement fees.
Some companies charge an additional "single supplement" for solo travelers booking a stateroom designed for more than one guest.
On cruise lines like Silversea, the supplement starts at an additional 25% on top of the base fare. On Royal Caribbean, it could be double the cost of your trip.
Look for solo cabins instead.
Instead of paying this hefty add-on, see whether the cruise line has cabins for solo travelers. Companies like Celebrity and Oceania offer this.
Yes, they can be small. But you could save a significant lump of cash by opting for solo cabins.
But no matter the room, dining, or itinerary you decide to pick, just remember to relax and enjoy your solo time.
Bring a book, grab a drink, and head to an observation lounge. Enjoy the comforts of alone time. It'll certainly be more entertaining on a cruise ship than sitting alone at home.

Travel + Leisure Readers' 5 Favorite Large-ship Ocean Cruise Lines of 2023
Readers loved all the entertainment options, ports of call, and spacious rooms on these large-ship ocean cruise lines in our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2023.
Paul Brady is the news director at Travel + Leisure and the brand's expert on cruise travel. He has been covering the travel industry for more than 15 years for outlets including Condé Nast Traveler , Skift , and The Huffington Post .
How Voting Works
What readers loved, the full list.
When it comes to crowd-pleasing vacations, it’s hard to top the value and fun that a large-ship ocean cruise line delivers. These spacious ships, which have anywhere from 800 to 1,499 cabins, are big enough to give guests a wide choice of onboard activities, fine dining, and cutting-edge entertainment. They also deliver a huge variety of stateroom choices, whether you’re seeking an affordable cabin for a budget-minded getaway or plenty of space in a grand suite for a celebratory splurge.
Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 T+L readers completed the 2023 survey, an increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).
For the cruise category, respondents were asked to rate individual ships; the results were combined to generate scores for cruise lines in different categories based on number of cabins, with large-ship ocean cruise lines falling between 800 to 1,499 cabins. Some cruise lines may appear in multiple categories depending on the makeup of their fleet.
Ships were specifically rated on the criteria below:
- Cabins/facilities
- Itineraries/destinations
- Excursions/activities
For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

This year’s rankings delivered a few surprises. No. 2 Holland America Line moved up two spots from its 2022 ranking. The brand is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2023, but readers had other things in mind when giving “HAL” the nod: “The tone of our ship was just what we were looking for, calm and relaxing,” said one voter of a voyage aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam . Others praised the company’s rock-solid musical entertainment and rewarding itineraries that go to Alaska, yes, but also many ports in Europe and South America. “We really, really enjoyed our Alaskan cruise,” one fan said. “The ship was nice, the food was great, the service was excellent, and the surroundings were absolutely beautiful!”
Slotting in at No. 3 this year was Disney Cruise Line, which garnered plenty of praise for its family-friendly programs and onboard atmosphere, despite falling from No. 1 last year. With a fleet of five ships, the line is celebrating an anniversary of its own this year, its 25th, with specialty music and entertainment on board this summer. “The ship was absolutely beautiful and there was amazing detail to everything,” said one passenger who traveled with extended family on Disney Wish . “Our granddaughter absolutely loves anything Frozen, so she certainly enjoyed the dinner show!”
This year’s voting also crowned a new No. 1: Cunard, yet another brand with plenty of history. Read on to learn why it topped the list as the best large-ship ocean cruise line.
Courtesy of Cunard
First launched in 1840, Cunard is once again top of mind for travelers who named it the world’s best large-ship line. Some fans may be looking ahead to the 2024 launch of Queen Anne, but many others don’t want to wait: the quintessential Queen Mary 2, which does transatlantic crossings between New York City and Southampton, England, offers as decadent a trip as ever, readers say. “Expect nothing less than the utmost of comfort and service,” opined one. “Loved our time on board and dressing up for a couple of nights during our seven-night crossing,” said another. This summer’s Alaska itineraries, aboard Queen Elizabeth, will afford plenty of opportunities to explore the wilds in the company of experts from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, a new partner for the classic brand. The line’s Queen Victoria is another solid choice: “A lovely, well-crafted ship with excellent, attentive service — and a fabulous tea service," one reader shared.

Florida News
Florida news | florida abortion financial impact statement leads immediately to controversy.
Financial impact statements provide estimated effects of proposed constitutional amendments on government revenues and the state budget. They usually receive little attention, but the abortion measure spurred contentious debate and divided the panel .
Representatives of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office and the Florida House pushed to include information in the statement about issues such as the possibility that passage of the amendment could lead to Medicaid-funded abortions and spur a wide range of costly lawsuits. Those are issues that amendment opponents have cited as they fight the proposal.
Ultimately, with the help of the panel’s representative from the Florida Senate, DeSantis’ office and the House got information they sought into the statement.
In part, the statement says there is “uncertainty about whether the amendment will require the state to subsidize abortions with public funds. Litigation to resolve those and other uncertainties will result in additional costs to the state government and state courts that will negatively impact the state budget. An increase in abortions may negatively affect the growth of state and local revenues over time. Because the fiscal impact of increased abortions on state and local revenues and costs cannot be estimated with precision, the total impact of the proposed amendment is indeterminate.”
Chris Spencer, DeSantis’ representative on the panel, known as the Financial Impact Estimating Conference, said “protracted” lawsuits about abortion issues would be inevitable if the amendment passes. That could include lawsuits about whether Medicaid should pay for abortions and which health-care providers would be able to perform abortions, he said.
Panel member Amy Baker, coordinator of the Legislature’s Office of Economic & Demographic Research, agreed that passage of the amendment would lead to lawsuits. But Baker, the panel’s lone dissenter, objected to including issues such as the possibility of litigation leading to Medicaid-funded abortions.
“I would, personally, feel more comfortable if we just did it clean and crisp,” Baker said. “We’re not making a political statement here. We are not trying to frighten people. There will be litigation costs.”
But Spencer, who is DeSantis’ former budget director, pushed back against the suggestion that including the information was political. DeSantis and other state Republican leaders oppose the proposed constitutional amendment.
“I don’t think it’s a political statement,” said Spencer, who was recently appointed as executive director of the State Board of Administration. “I don’t think it’s anything other than we know litigation is going to occur.”
The proposed amendment, which will appear on the November ballot as Amendment 4, says, in part, that no “law shall prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health, as determined by the patient’s healthcare provider.” Abortion-rights supporters began the initiative effort after DeSantis and the GOP-controlled Legislature in spring 2023 approved a bill to prevent abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.
The Financial Impact Estimating Conference released an initial statement for the abortion proposal in November 2023. But on April 1, the Florida Supreme Court issued a ruling that allowed a six-week abortion limit to take effect. Though the limit was approved in 2023, it was hung up in court for nearly a year.
Floridians Protecting Freedom, a political committee leading efforts to pass the amendment, filed a lawsuit in April arguing that the November financial-impact statement needed to be revised because it was outdated after the Supreme Court ruling. Leon County Circuit Judge John Cooper agreed with the committee , but the state appealed to the 1st District Court of Appeal, where the case is pending.
Amid the case, Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, R-Naples, and House Speaker Paul Renner, R-Palm Coast, directed the Financial Impact Estimating Conference to begin meeting again to revise the statement. The panel met three times, with Monday’s meeting lasting into the night.
Floridians Protecting Freedom and its “Yes on 4” campaign issued a news release late Monday that described the revised statement as reading “like an ad written by Amendment 4 opponents — highly-politicized and unlawfully inaccurate to mislead voters on Amendment 4.”
“What should have been an easy administrative fix on outdated (financial impact statement) language has become a dirty trick to mislead voters.” Lauren Brenzel, campaigns director for Yes on 4, said in a prepared statement.
But Sara Johnson of the anti-amendment group Vote No on 4, told the panel during Monday’s meeting that it should provide information about such issues as potential lawsuit costs.
“It’s important for Florida voters to know that what you see is not what you will get,” Johnson said. “What we will get is costly litigation for years to come that will result in policies we have not yet seen and therefore cannot yet analyze.”
