In a recent interview with Chaoszine , AS I LAY DYING 's founding vocalist Tim Lambesis spoke about the progress of the mixing sessions for the band's next studio album. The LP will mark AS I LAY DYING 's first with its new lineup, featuring Lambesis and longtime guitarist Phil Sgrosso alongside drummer Nick Pierce (ex- UNEARTH ),bassist vocalist Ryan Neff ( MISS MAY I ) and guitarist Ken Susi ( UNEARTH ).

Asked if the new album is "already done and in the can", considering that the mixing sessions began last fall, Tim said: "So what's interesting about it is the mixing engineer has a few more songs to finish. Not because he's lazy or anything, but because we always end up like adding a layer or a couple of things here last minute. But he's been mixing it since I first said that in November, but then with the holidays and everything, there was a little bit of a break. Long story short, he's still fixing a few things. And we definitely have the album scheduled to come out this year and some tours that are already booked to follow that. I just can't announce those tours yet."

Pressed about whether the album will definitely be out in 2024, Tim said: "Yeah, it definitely needs to be because [ laughs ] we have album-release tours booked, so it's definitely gonna be out this year."

Earlier in the month, Lambesis told the Today's Boondoggle podcast about the musical direction of the new AS I LAY DYING material: "No disrespect to some of these other bands, but some bands, when they get to as far along in their careers as we are, they start lightening up or putting out records that are, I think, less exciting than their previous material. And I think for us, it's really cool. I feel like a second with AS I LAY DYING to where it's, like, this record has a lot of really cool intense parts, a lot of really great intricate melodies and cool guitar work and stuff. And so just showing people that we're just as passionate and energetic about where we're at as we've ever been, that, to me, is what's important."

Last June, Tim told Graspop Metal Meeting about AS I LAY DYING 's upcoming LP: "We partly self-produced [it], and then we also worked with another producer. So we spent about a year working on the album by ourselves before we gave it to the producer, who's mixing the album now."

Regarding how the addition of new members Pierce , Neff and Susi has affected AS I LAY DYING 's sound, Tim said: "Well, [ Nick , Ryan and Ken are] new for us, but, obviously, the guys have been around playing music for 20 years themselves. We're familiar, just having spent so much time with UNEARTH , and then MISS MAY I having a pretty similar sound.

"The songwriting within AS I LAY DYING has historically been mostly Phil and I," he continued. " Josh [ Gilbert ], our previous bass player, helped. But the core of the songwriting is the same. So this additional layer that we get from these new guys is almost like breathing fresh new air… a breath of fresh air."

In September 2022, Lambesis addressed AS I LAY DYING 's recent lineup changes in an interview with Metalshop TV . He said: "I think for our fans, they think that the changes happened all in a very short period of time, but they actually happened over the last two years. The first change was on guitar we invited Ken Susi to fill in for us. And that was [around 2020] that we invited him. But then, of course, the pandemic happened and so we had a lot of breaks until we had a tour again. So Ken 's been rehearsing with us, or talking about rehearsing with us, for the last couple of years. And on drums we have Nick Pierce , who joined us. Nick Pierce was previously in UNEARTH ; Ken is from UNEARTH as well. And Nick stopped playing with UNEARTH and coincidentally at the same time we needed a drummer, because our previous drummer hadn't been communicating with us; he went very isolated once the pandemic hit. And so there wasn't an argument or anything like that; it was just a situation where when the pandemic hit, he decided to take a new direction in life and kind of cut himself off from the rest of us. And we decided we wanted to keep going forward. Phil and I had been the ones writing the songs all these years, so when Nick Pierce left UNEARTH , we thought it was the perfect opportunity to have him perform with us. And then Ryan came from MISS MAY I . He was the last guy to come in. And he didn't come in until a couple of months ago. Our bass player, Josh , previously left, and he's with SPIRITBOX now. And when he decided to go perform with SPIRITBOX , we called up Ryan , who was with MISS MAY I . And Ryan Neff was on tour at the time. And then we asked him, 'Can you start touring with us as soon as this tour is over?' And he said, 'Well, I'm only gonna have three days off to rehearse in between tours.' He said, 'If you guys want me to do it, I'll make sure I come prepared.' And he had a lot to learn in three days, but he pulled it together. He's a very, very hard-working guy."

AS I LAY DYING 's new album will be the follow-up to "Shaped By Fire" , which came out in September 2019 via Nuclear Blast .

In June 2022, longtime AS I LAY DYING drummer Jordan Mancino announced that he would sit out the band's tour due to "a number of ongoing internal issues" that "have not yet been resolved."

Mancino 's announcement came less than a month after AS I LAY DYING 's longtime bassist/vocalist Josh Gilbert revealed that he was leaving the band. In a statement, the remaining members of AS I LAY DYING said that Gilbert "decided to exit" the group "to pursue other musical opportunities."

Josh was the second AS I LAY DYING member to leave the band in less than a year. In August 2021, guitarist Nick Hipa confirmed his exit from AS I LAY DYING , explaining that he could no longer justify being part of "a superficial pursuit" of the "story and meaning" that the band's 2018 reunion was built upon.

Lambesis was famously convicted in 2014 for his role in a murder-for-hire plot against his estranged wife.

In May 2014, Lambesis was sentenced to six years in jail after pleading guilty to paying a San Diego police officer posing as a hitman $1,000 to kill his wife. Approximately two and a half years later — on December 17, 2016 — he was discharged from a California detention facility and was transferred to the Division of Adult Parole Operations.

In June 2018, AS I LAY DYING played its first show with Lambesis in five years and released a new single. Lambesis also owned up to his crimes in a long apology on the band's Facebook page after his release.

The return of AS I LAY DYING raised some questions, particularly since Hipa categorically denounced the band's disgraced frontman as a "sociopathic narcissist in definite need of rehabilitation" in a social-media post back in 2014.

In September 2021, AS I LAY DYING released a new song called "Roots Below" which was originally a B-side leftover from when the sessions for "Shaped By Fire" .

By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

Drake and J. Cole are keeping their collaborative hot streak going into the new year. Beginning in January, the two rappers will split the bill on the 2024 It’s All a Blur – Big as the What? tour. Drake is currently scheduled for 32 shows together, including several two-night stands in many cities, with J. Cole performing at most of them.

The tour will begin on Jan. 18 with back-to-back nights at Denver’s Ball Arena. Drake and J. Cole will make additional stops in San Antonio, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Tampa, Nashville, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Cleveland, Buffalo, Lexington, and more. J. Cole will not perform at the final four shows of the tour, scheduled in New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Alabama.

The newly announced dates mark an extension of the 50-date It’s All a Blur tour Drake completed this summer with 21 Savage. During the Montreal stop in July, J. Cole joined Drake on stage in place of 21 Savage. And before the run of shows kicked off earlier this year, Drake served as a special guest at the 2023 iteration of J. Cole’s Dreamville Festival in April.

With the TOUR’s return to a calendar-year schedule, 2024 will kick off with the “Opening Drive” at The Sentry and Sony Open in Hawaii. The Sentry also is the first of eight Signature Events for 2024, which in addition to the majors, THE PLAYERS and the FedExCup Playoffs, will provide a consistent cadence of tournaments that fans can circle on their calendars, knowing the best players in the world will be participating.

“We are excited about the roll-out of the PGA TOUR’s reimagined schedule,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan, “and what the season will offer to our fans: a January start with stars competing head-to-head more often, alongside the weekly drama of life-altering moments and the emergence of new stars.”

To get you ready for 2024, here are five things you need to know about next year’s schedule:

1. SIGNATURE EVENTS

Eight Signature Events are featured on the new schedule. These events, referred to as Designated Events in 2023, will showcase the TOUR’s top players at tournaments and venues that fans are intimately familiar with. These events will offer increased purses and FedExCup points, with winners earning 700 points (compared to 500 for Full-Field Events).

The eight Signature Events for 2024 are:

* The Sentry (Jan. 1-7) * AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (Jan. 29-Feb. 4) * The Genesis Invitational (Feb. 12-18) * Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard (March 4-10) * RBC Heritage (April 15-21) * Wells Fargo Championship (May 6-12) * the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday (June 3-9) * Travelers Championship (June 17-23)

The three player-hosted invitationals (Tiger Woods’ Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard and Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament presented by Workday) will feature a 36-hole cut to the top 50 players and ties, as well as any players within 10 strokes of the lead. The remaining five Signature Events will not have a cut.

Signature Events are expected to have field sizes between 70-80 players. They will be comprised of the top 50 from the previous year’s FedExCup, top performers (10) in the current-year FedExCup standings, top performers (five) through the most recent swing of Full-Field Events and Additional Events, PGA TOUR winners and PGA TOUR members in the top 30 of the Official World Golf Ranking. (See below for criteria.)

The Sentry will feature the top 50 from the 2023 FedExCup standings along with all PGA TOUR winners from the 2023 calendar year.

as tour 2024

The Signature Events are among 15 tournaments in 2024 that offer 700 or more FedExCup points to their winners. THE PLAYERS and majors will offer 750 points (up from 600) and the first two FedExCup Playoffs events award 2,000.

2. THE CADENCE

Thanks to multiple opportunities throughout the season for players to qualify for the Signature Events, the 2024 schedule carries a cadence and interplay between the Signature and Full-Field Events.

Earning spots in Signature Events adds another storyline to the pursuit of TOUR titles and FedExCup points, and the placement of Signature Events alongside THE PLAYERS and majors creates several multi-week stretches of premier golf.

The Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard and THE PLAYERS Championship will be held in back-to-back weeks in March. The Masters will be played four weeks later and will immediately be followed by the RBC Heritage. The Wells Fargo Championship and the PGA Championship will be played in consecutive weeks in May and the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday will begin a three-week stretch of golf that includes the U.S. Open and the Travelers Championship.

The Full-Field Events will offer opportunities for stars to compete against players seeking to climb golf’s meritocracy. In addition to the Signature Events, top players will continue to visit their favorite stops and compete in the Full-Field Events. Competition between these big names and the TOUR’s up-and-comers, the players trying to unseat those atop golf’s meritocracy, creates compelling drama.

The Swing 10 and The Next 5 allow in-form players to earn spots in those Signature Events. The top 10 players in the current-season FedExCup standings who are not already exempt will earn a spot in Signature Event fields, as will the top performers in Full-Field events preceding the Signature Events.

This chart shows the cutoff dates and events that will determine those spots in Signature Events.

3. ON THE MOVE

Several events have moved places in the schedule. The most noticeable is the Texas Children’s Houston Open going from the fall to two weeks prior to the Masters. Along with the following week’s Valero Texas Open, the TOUR will spend two weeks in the Lone Star State before the Masters.

The Mexico Open at Vidanta moves from April to the final week of February. The tournament, held on Mexico’s West Coast, now follows The Genesis Invitational in Pacific Palisades, California, and precedes the TOUR’s move to the East Coast.

The AT&T Byron Nelson, traditionally held the week after the Wells Fargo Championship, will be played the week prior (April 29-May 5). The Wells Fargo Championship (May 6-12) will now lead directly into the PGA Championship.

The RBC Canadian Open and the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday swapped dates. The RBC Canadian Open will now be the week before the Memorial Tournament. The Memorial will precede the 2024 U.S. Open at North Carolina’s Pinehurst Resort.

There will also be a one-week break between the 3M Open and the Wyndham Championship to accommodate the Olympic Men's Golf Competition on Aug. 1-4 at Le Golf National in Paris, France.

4. NEW PLACES

The PGA TOUR heads to three new venues in 2024.

The BMW Championship will be played at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado, about 25 miles south of Denver. The Jack Nicklaus-designed course will look familiar to longtime TOUR fans. It hosted The International from 1986 to 2006, a modified Stableford event on TOUR. Past champions at Castle Pines include Davis Love III, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh and Lee Janzen. It will host the second FedExCup Playoffs event in 2024.

The TOUR also is debuting a new event in the renowned golf destination of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and returning to Utah for the first time in decades.

The Myrtle Beach Classic on May 6-12 is a 300-FedExCup point event that will be played the same week as the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina. It debuts at Dunes Golf & Beach Club, a Robert Trent Jones-designed course that hosted PGA TOUR Champions’ Charles Schwab Cup Championship from 1994 to 1999 and was the site of the PGA TOUR Q-School Finals in 1973, where three-time defending NCAA champion Ben Crenshaw took medalist honors.

Utah’s Black Desert Resort will host a new tournament, the Black Desert Championship, during the FedExCup Fall. Tournament dates will be announced at a later date along with the remainder of the schedule for the FedExCup Fall, the portion of the season where eligibility will be finalized for 2025. It will be the first PGA TOUR event contested in Utah in more than 60 years.

The majors are re-visiting familiar venues in 2024. Both the U.S. Open (Pinehurst No. 2) and PGA Championship (Valhalla Golf Club) are being held at courses that they last used in 2014. Valhalla is the site of Rory McIlroy’s most recent major victory. The Open returns to Royal Troon for the first time since 2016.

The Presidents Cup will be held next year at The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec, Canada. The club hosted the 2014 RBC Canadian Open and the 2007 Presidents Cup.

5. CALENDAR-YEAR SCHEDULE

For the first time since 2012, the PGA TOUR will operate on a calendar-year schedule.

The first of 36 Regular Season tournaments will be played in Maui, Hawaii, in the first week of January, followed by three FedExCup Playoffs events. The FedExCup champion will be crowned Sept. 1 at the TOUR Championship in Atlanta.

The 2024 FedExCup Fall, which will finalize eligibility for the 2025 season, will start in September after the conclusion of the TOUR Championship. Finishers Nos. 71-125 at the conclusion of the FedExCup Fall – in addition to all who qualified for the FedExCup Playoffs -- will be exempt into all Full-Field Events in 2025. Winners in the FedExCup Fall receive a two-year exemption, an exemption into THE PLAYERS Championship as well as other majors and invitationals.

Additionally, Nos. 51-60 at the conclusion of the FedExCup Fall will qualify for the two Signature Events following The Sentry (AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational).

Liverpool add extra date to 2024 preseason US Tour

Jürgen klopp will have gone but the show goes on and liverpool’s summer starts to take shape..

Jürgen Klopp will have gone but the show goes on and Liverpool’s summer starts to take shape.

Liverpool have another date circled in their preseason. The club announced a friendly against LaLiga side Betis as part of a mini-tour of the United States this summer. The Reds return to the US for the first time in five years, with the aim of preparing the squad for the new season - one which they will head into with a new manager at the helm.

The Reds kickstart their US tour against Betis at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh on Friday 26 July with kick-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EDT / 4:30 p.m. PDT.

Betis CEO Ramón Alarcón , said, “There’ no doubt this is a particularly exciting game for us for several reasons . Firstly, because it will give us the chance to gauge our level against one of the top teams in the world but also because playing Liverpool brings back so many memories of our debut in the Champions League and the great atmosphere we encountered both at the Benito Villamarín and Anfield. We are clubs with similar values and both boast a large fanbase - supporters who feel passionately about their teams . It’s wonderful that we will be meeting again in Pittsburgh”.

1982: Mission in Marbella

This will be Liverpool’s fourth encounter with the Seville-based outfit. The two teams first came face to face in the semi-final of the IV Trofeo Ciudad de Marbella on 14 August 1982. Wearing their iconic Crown Paints kit, Liverpool beat the Verdiblancos 0-2 at Estadio Municipal de Marbella with goals from Kenny Dalglish and David Hodgson . Málaga would later deny Paisley’s team the trophy, winning the shootout 4-2 after the final ended 1-1 (Fer Rodríguez ‘7 and Alan Kennedy ‘67).

Liverpool and Betis were drawn together in the 2005/6 Champions League group stage with the Spanish club handed a baptism of fire by meeting the champions in matchday 1 in the tournament debut. Pongolle lobbed Antonio Doblas to put the visitors ahead on two minutes and Luis García added another 10 minutes later. Arzu pulled one back for the hosts after the break as it ended 1-2. The return fixture at Anfield on matchday 5 failed to produce any goals with Crouch and Morientes fluffing a handful of chances.

Artists Who Are Going On Tour In 2024: The Rolling Stones, Drake, Olivia Rodrigo & More

The year is just getting started, but 2024 is already stacked with exciting tours. Open up your calendar and start planning with this sprawling list of announced 2024 tours.

Just a couple of years ago, live music still looked uncertain — would variant X, Y or Z derail the train for the umpteenth time? But in that regard, 2023 felt almost totally in the clear — and that's why it feels like the rubber band is stretched back for 2024, and it's ready to launch.

Sure, compiling every musical act who's touring in 2024 might be impossible. But GRAMMY.com's stylistic purview is far and wide: country, hardcore, soul, R&B, rap, indie rock, you name it. As such, we're giving it our best shot — and will continue to update the list as more tours are announced.

Without further ado, here's a major cross section of the 2024 touring landscape as currently announced — from Alvvays to Adam Ant , from Def Leppard to Danny Brown.

Meet The Artists Bringing Back UK Jungle: Nia Archives, SHERELLE & More

First developed in the 1990s, a new generation of UK musicians — particularly queer individuals and women of color — are reviving jungle music. From Tim Reaper to PinkPantheress, envelop yourself in the experimental sounds of the genre.

In the early 1990s, a bombastic new type of music was emerging in the underground Black British scene of London. Jungle was a frantic mixture of breakbeats and reggae featuring fast beats that splintered into myriad directions, interspersed with vocal samples.

Thanks to pirate radio stations, jungle saturated the streets of London’s predominantly Black, working-class neighborhoods. Jungle was a sound of escapism, celebration, community, crafted by the children of immigrants of post-war Britain.

Junglist historian Julia Toppin notes in her essay "Tech, Language and Riddim: From Jungle to UK Drill" that jungle "snatched bites from young Black Britain’s sonic palette of genres: reggae, hip-hop, pop, house, soul, RnB, groove, punk, jazz, folk, and classical," with artists like Goldie, Shy FX, A Guy Called Gerald, General Levy leading the scene. By the latter part of the decade, jungle offshoots like drum and bass gained prominence, causing the jungle scene to gradually fade into the background.

Today, a new generation of UK musicians are waking up the scene — a revival spearheaded by queer individuals and women of color. As contemporary junglist Nia Archives told GRAMMY.com , jungle is "anything over a breakbeat" — it simply refuses to conform: "The breaks have so much room to go in whatever direction you want. You can go really heavy , or you can go really light and atmospheric," she said.

It’s a flexibility that she takes full advantage of across her releases. Nia Archives layers  beats with everything from pensive, thoughtful lyrics and RnB melodies ("Cards on the Table", "So Tell Me"), to rave abandon (" Baianá ", "Forbidden Feelingz ", " Unfinished Business ")

Nia Archives is taking her debut album, Silence is Loud on the road, stopping at summer festivals including Chicago’s Lollapalooza before touring the U.S. in the fall. She is one of many contemporary jungle artists boldly experimenting with unrestrained beats, earth-shaking basslines and intricate percussive patterns to breathe new life into the pulsating rave scene.

Here are seven other artists who are bringing jungle back.

Former Mixmag photographer SHERELLE gained widespread attention after a 2019 Boiler Room viral set , followed by the release of "JUNGLE TEKNAH" in 2021, which layers piano house chords onto jungle beats. Her latest single, "Henry’s Revenge," features ethereal synths over dramatic bass drops.

Fresh from a completely sold-out international tour, SHERELLE will play a New York Boiler Room set on July 14, alongside Afrobeats star Amaarae and UK rapper Giggs.

One of the slickest in the game, Sully is a pioneer of today’s revival and has been on the scene since 2005. His beats are methodical, with tight percussion flawlessly mixed into hours of ecstatic jungle harmony. On 2024 single "Nights", he teams up with jazz singer Sâlo to create a dreamy and contemplative dancefloor meditation.

He continues to inject energy into the club, with massive sets featuring the likes of grime MC Flowdan and B2B’s with fellow junglist Tim Reaper, and is playing several UK festival slots over summer.

GROVE harnesses jungle’s unmatched energy to voice political despair. "The stinking rich families, you know how they anger me," they spat on last year’s single " Stinkin Rich," where trippy beats erupt into a heavily distorted chorus.

Their 2022 breakout hit, "Feed My Desire," is sensual, with hushed whispers and soft verses underscored by blaring basslines, demonstrating GROVE's mastery of mood — ranging from rage to seduction.

PinkPantheress

PinkPantheress didn’t come up through a club or rave scene, by anonymously uploading songs to TikTok, which she made in her bedroom during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her sped-up vocals and luscious hooks nodded to the heyday of 2000s UK Garage (UKG) (a jungle offshoot), quickly drumming up a viral following online.

Last year, the 23-year-old broke into the U.S. thanks to the massive UKG track "Boys A Liar pt 2" featuring Ice Spice , which now has over 200 million views on YouTube. A lover of throwback genres and a fan of jungle veterans like Shy FX, PinkPanthress combines breakbeats with pop melodies and emo guitar riffs, a delicious mix that’s made her one of Gen-Z’s fastest-rising pop stars.

Tim Reaper is a London native who has pushed the jungle revival for over a decade. His music includes reggae-influenced ragga samples (one of jungle's key influences), chill synths, and can go both hard and soft.

In 2020, Tim Reaper launched club night Future Retro to showcase London’s budding scene. However, the pandemic lockdown led the event to morph into a new-skool jungle record label that highlights some of the genre's hottest artists, including Sully, Mantra , and Decibella .

London-based DJ Shy One has been making music since she was a teenager, coming up through the ranks as a selector on legendary Hackney-based online radio NTS Radio.

Her music is shaped by grime, soul, house and jungle, and she’s taking her versatile sets to a handful of European festivals this summer. Her latest single, " Gyallis Spiral," combines rubbery bass lines and scattered synths, giving it a uniquely hyper-futuristic, spacey feel.

LCY is an artist and owner of the experimental label S7NS7N whose music is, by design,  indescribable . Their tracks are leftfield and surreal; the mere act of listening is an out-of-body experience.

Their 2023 EP He Hymns is a celestial exploration of club music hinged on breakbeats, heavy bass, disorientating drops and haunting vocals. You’re not sure what’s going on, but jungle is one of the many genres that form a kaleidoscope of their mind-bending sounds.

Crashing Into The Present: How Kehlani Learned To Trust Their Instincts And Exist Loudly

"I want this next batch of music to feel like the most fiery parts of me," Kehlani says of her new album, 'Crash.' The singer/songwriter speaks with GRAMMY.com about embracing the moment and making an album she can headbang to.

After finishing the first mixes of their new album, Kehlani knew exactly what she needed to do: head to Las Vegas.

The L.A.-based, Oakland-born singer/songwriter had always identified with Sin City: "I’m full of juxtapositions," she tells GRAMMY.com. "Vegas is this crazy bright light city in the middle of a vacant desert that has weddings and also strippers." Fittingly, Kehlani harbored a very Vegas-like image in their head while creating Crash , a record built on blaring neon, glowing smoke, and the highest highs.

Crash drops June 21, and is Kehlani's fourth solo album. She burst onto the scene in 2009 as a member of teen sextet PopLyfe, but their 2014 debut solo mixtape Cloud 19 announced a far more complex character. Their debut full-length, SweetSexySavage , was released three years later to critical acclaim, with two more albums and a handful of platinum-certified singles following. As if that weren’t enough, Kehlani added acting, appearing in "The L Word: Generation Q" and a cameo in Creed III .

And while Crash embodies the evolution and growth through all those experiences, the record builds a hyper-real language all their own. Beyond any sense of R&B or pop, soul or hip-hop, Crash finds Kehlani chasing passions that refuse to fit in any box, shifting multiple times within a track — refusing to focus on anything but the moment.

"A crash isn't anything from the past. It isn't the anxiety of what's about to happen," she says. "It's the height of the moment. It's right now."

Nearing the release of Crash , Kehlani spoke with GRAMMY.com about finding inspiration from international music, getting their five-year-old to sing on the album, and their need to stage dive.

What’s it like living in Los Angeles after growing up in the Bay Area?

I moved to L.A. when I was about 17. I had already left the house. I left the house at 14, and by the time I was almost 18 it was the appropriate time for me to situate in a new place. L.A. and the Bay are like cousins. Do we have differences? Absolutely, things that are fundamental to us, but when you leave California, you can really see that we're just like a big family.

Had you been dreaming of L.A. as a place where you could pursue art? Were you already set on that goal?

It was the closest place that a young, very broke person could go and work in music. I'm sure there were other places with musical homes, musical cities, but if all I had to do was get on a $15 bus and go find someone to stay with in L.A., I was gonna do it for sure.

That’s the same ambition that I feel drives this new record, which is just so dense and full of surprises. That includes the lovely retro radio intro to "GrooveTheory," where you move from this ‘60s pop feel to the present. That’s such a smart way to foreground your evolution.

I think the second that we made that song and then turned it into ["GrooveTheory"], I was like, This feels like it encompasses where I'm headed, this whole new sound .

Once that radio dials in and it comes in with R&B elements, it's producing where I'm headed, but also remembering that my core hasn't changed. Especially the energy of what I'm saying in the song, like, "I'm kind of crazy," it's introducing this energy difference on this album. I feel like that's the biggest change, and that's what's so prevalent in this whole rollout. Energetically, I'm on a whole different type of time.

You can sense it. 'Crash' feels really rooted in self-expression and personal growth, and when you listen to it as a whole, it really does seem like an evolution story. Beyond just the genre and style, how do you feel the way that you've expressed your true self has shifted over the years?

Thank you! That's been the feedback I've gotten from pretty much everyone who's listened, and I don't know what I expected, but it wasn't this. I have realized the public's understanding of me and the general consensus for so long, and I also realized how multi-faceted I am to people.

People get really confused when I express all the sides of my personality. They’re either, like, "Okay, she makes really sweet love songs," or "We've seen you be political, we've seen you come out, we've seen you be a family member." And then there's a lot of people who are, like, "I feel like she's f—ing crazy. I've seen her in multiple relationships. I've seen her be angry. I've seen her get online and cuss people out."

I want this next batch of music to feel like the most fiery parts of me. I want it to feel like the most present and energetic parts of me. I don't want anything to feel somber. I don't want anything to feel reminiscent. I think a lot of my albums in the past have been me looking back, and sitting in that feeling and detailing it. I just wanted [this album] to feel right here, right now, which is why the title came about. A crash isn't anything from the past. It isn't the anxiety of what's about to happen. It's the height of the moment. It's right now.

That’s unfortunately a story you hear too often about artists of color — that essentialization, where you can only be seen as one thing. R&B often gets hit with those same issues. Throughout your career you’ve stood up to those expectations, and "Better Not" on this album is such a good example of that. It’s a left turn, a stylistic contrast and an open conversation with the listener. You cleverly fuse that intentionality with a voice that’s stronger than ever.

In the past, I have had moments where I would make the song and [start recording], and there would be so many versions of each song on different microphones, recorded in different places.

"Let me try vocal production. Let me try to go back and work with this version again." I went back and did vocal production with Oak Felder , who did all the vocal production on SweetSexySavage . When I come back to some of my favorite vocal production moments, it was moments like "Distraction" or "Advice" or "Escape" — songs on my very first album — and I wanted to get that feeling again. Where it's lush where it needs to be, but also that I really mean what I'm saying.

That started with the approach in the songwriting. Once I had the songs and I had to go back and deliver them, I had enough time to listen and listen, to learn the songs and identify with them. We would make music all day and then go out, and we would be in this sprinter van on the way to going out, and, like, bang, the songs we just made, the energy was just different. It allowed me to be present in a different way where my voice is able to show up like that.

Which again ties perfectly to crashing into the present. As someone from South Africa, I love that the other guests that you included represent different cultural viewpoints. You worked with Young Miko from Puerto Rico, Omah Lay from Nigeria. Having that musical dialogue is so powerful.

We had so many conversations about how America's in the backseat often when it comes to music. We have our moments, and it's fantastic, like Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter . There's a culture that is super American, that is Black, that historically needs to be dived into. It needs to be shown that we do have something here.

So many people that don't speak Spanish bang Bad Bunny all day. Amapiano’s taking over; Tyla ’s going up. It's really not here . So that wasn't a conscious choice. It's just what we've all been listening to, what we've been loving.

Speaking of guests, I wanted to ask about your daughter, whose voice is on "Deep." Was she just in the studio and you got her singing?

So those vocals on that, that’s actually my little sister and my goddaughter. And [my daughter] was in the room and she started singing along. She has perfect pitch; she's always freestyling or singing or making something up.

I was like, "You want to just go sing on it?" What's on there is her first take. Literally. She did it the first time, all the way through, perfectly. I was like, "Well, that's it, guys. I can retire."

That track is so lush. It feels so alive. Were you working with a full band?

[Producer] Jack Rochon, who I did a lot of the music with, he just is a freaking genius music whiz. Honestly, he's one of the most humble people that I know, and deserves credit for how amazing a lot of this album is.

Talking about touchstones, there's a Prince energy to the title track. Did you have any new inspirations or influences for this record?

Thank you! My main focus for this album came from going on tour for my last one and making such a pretty, sweet, intimate album, and then playing some of the biggest venues of my career. At some point I had to rearrange the setlist to add in a lot of the album before that one, because it was just more energy on the stage. By week two of tour, the setlist had completely changed. I knew that I was playing venues on this next tour that I've dreamt about, places that I can't fathom that I'm playing, like Barclays Center.

I do a lot of things for, like, my inner child, and this is such a move for my inner child. Like, You're about to go play Barclays. Do you want to look back and say, ‘I rocked out and played Barclays’? I'm a person who headbangs on stage. I stage dive. I wanted to create an album that would ring through a venue like that. I want people to be engaged again. I'm not looking for the lighters and the somber, holding each other — which will occur regardless, because it's a me show.

But I really wanted people to be in their bodies, and their heart’s exploding and the ground’s shaking. So that's what we accomplished. I wanted to have fun. This album is so fun to me. It’s a place of fire in my heart.

It took me a second to get the word play on "Eight." I loved the track, and then suddenly I was like, 'Oh… I knew there was something raunchy going on here.'

[*Laughs.*] "Eight" was super fun, and shoutout to the boys that I did it with, because they made it everything for me.

I didn't come up with the wordplay. My boys did. Like, "This is how you talk!" I was like, "It is! This is perfect." Once I got in to fix things, add things, add my own spin, and finish writing, my favorite part was that it sounds like a Brandy song. She's my favorite.

I also wanted to ask about the Nina Sky sample on "After Hours."

That was mine. I was like, "What can we flip that when it comes on, my generation loses their mind?" And for me, every single time that Nina Sky comes on in the club, everybody's like "Woo!" And then you see how many songs were made from that same sample, and they're all songs that make us lose our minds.

I went into the room with the producers, and I was like, "So, I want to flip this, but I want you to make it to where it doesn't become one of those where the whole thing is just a sample."

Similarly, "Lose My Wife" balances breeziness with high emotional stakes. Is finding a balance like that just natural for someone so capable of juxtaposition?

The second that we established that [the record] felt like Vegas, I knew what components were missing from the energy of how I feel the second my car crosses the line into the city of Las Vegas. I knew I was missing that feeling of the next morning when you realize you went on this high and you come down. I wanted to create these scenarios that weren't necessarily applicable to me, but captured that emotion. I've been there before, and I want people to be like, Damn, I've been there before. I know this feeling .

I recorded that song at 4 in the morning with a sinus infection. The second that we finished it, everybody was like, "You can never re-sing that. Don't try to make another version, you're not gonna be able to sound like that again." All the chatter in the background of that song is really everybody who was in the studio that stayed up to just hang out. We had the tequila out, it was perfect. That was probably one of my favorite moments of making the album.

It takes a while as an artist to reach a place where you can capture those moments. You said before that people try to figure you out, and I mean this in the best possible way, but it feels like now you don’t care if they can’t figure you out.

I don't give a f—anymore, yeah. And that was a very important thing for me to learn. I used to care so much, and I would spend so much time explaining myself online, in music, in interviews, on stage. I realized that you're damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I've been so forward-facing with my heart my entire career that I've left a lot of room for people to consistently pedestal me and then critique me, for people to want to tear me down. I realized I'm just being present, here, existing loudly in front of a billion people, and whichever way that goes is how the cookies gonna crumble. Me giving a f—? I'm the only one it's affecting at this point, for sure.

Metro Boomin's Essential Songs: 10 Must-Know Tracks, From "Creepin" To "Like That"

The 2024 GRAMMY nominee for Producer Of The Year is one of hip-hop's most in-demand minds. Between his collab albums with Future and some highly debated beefs with rap's biggest stars, it's the perfect time to revisit the Metro-verse.

Metro Boomin has spent more than a decade redefining rap music. The gloomy, 808-induced trap beats that flood radio airwaves and blare from nightclub speakers are a symbol of his influence. But now, the Atlanta-based superproducer is on one of his biggest musical runs to date.

In April, Metro released the second of two joint albums with Future , hinted at a third release this year, sold out a concert at the Kundalini Grand Pyramids in Egypt, and clinched the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 with " Like That " featuring Kendrick Lamar. He also delivered a first-of-its-kind instrumental diss aimed at Drake called " BBL Drizzy, " accusing the Toronto rapper of going under the knife.

The diss was in response to Drake’s " Push Ups " and subsequent disses toward Kendrick Lamar. " Metro shut your hoe ass up and make some drums " he rapped. The verbal blow inspired Metro to release the hilarious instrumental, which he encouraged fans to rap on for a chance to win a free beat.

Months before the feud, Metro celebrated two nominations for Best Rap Album and Producer of the Year, Non-Classical at the 66th GRAMMY Awards . While he didn’t take home a coveted golden gramophone, the momentum has elevated his career to new heights.

Before the St. Louis-bred producer kicks off the We Trust You tour with Future on July 30, revisit 10 of Metro Boomin's biggest releases.

"Karate Chop" (2013)

A 19-year-old Metro crafted his first charting single right before making a life-changing move to Atlanta. With piercing synths and bubbly arpeggios, the song was the lead single for Future’s highly anticipated sophomore album, Honest .

But Metro, a freshman at Morehouse College at the time, wasn’t sold on its success. " I never really like it, " Metro told XXL . " Then every time people would come into the studio, he would always play the record and I was like, ‘Why are you so stuck on this s—? We have way harder records.’ "

But after cranking out a new mix on the original track, " Karate Chop " went on to become his first placement on a major label album. The remix with Lil Wayne further elevated the record and, by virtue, Metro’s profile as a musical craftsman.

" Jumpman " (2015)

Metro mastered the late-summer anthem in 2015 with " Jumpman . " The song was the most notable hit from Drake and Future’s collaborative mixtape, What a Time to Be Alive, and went on to shut down bustling nightclubs and obscure strip joints. And while the record didn’t perform as well as other songs on this list, it secured Future his first Top 20 hit.

The song — which features Metro’s signature bass and a screeching raven sound effect — also saw a streaming boost after an Apple Music commercial featuring Taylor Swift rapping to the song. According to Adweek , the campaign helped generate a 431 percent increase in global sales

What makes " Jumpman " even more special is that a collab between Future, Metro, and Drake may never happen again. Reportedly, the duo is at odds with Drake because the OVO artist decided to link with 21 Savage on Her Loss instead of doing a follow-up project with Future.

"Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1" (2016)

" Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1 " is the song that set Kanye West ’s album, Life of Pablo, ablaze. Opening with a clip of gospel musician and singer T.L. Barrett’s Father I Stretch My Hands,” Metro’s signature producer tag kicks the record into full gear. The pulsating synthesizers and bouncy percussion match West’s raunchy and sexually explicit lyrics.

Metro’s production received significant praise, with several publications pointing to his contributions on end-of-year listings. And in the eight years since its release, " Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1 " has been certified six times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America , making it one of Ye’s most-sold records of all time.

"Congratulations" (2016)

After the success of "White Iverson," a young Post Malone was on the hunt for the hottest producers in the rap game. He managed to land Metro, who worked with fellow producers Frank Dukes and the prolific Louis Bell on the triumphant trap record "Congratulations."

On a 2022 episode of the podcast " Full Send ," Metro revealed that the celebratory song was made after watching the world’s greatest athletes eclipse historic feats of their own. "I remember the Olympics was on TV, and just how the music was sounding, it sounded like some champion s—," he said.

"Congratulations" marked Post Malone’s second Top 20 hit following his debut, "White Iverson." The song was certified diamond after totaling more than 11 million combined sales. Today, it remains one of Metro’s biggest achievements.

"Bad and Boujee " (2017)

Fueled by virality and a shoutout from Donald Glover at the 2017 Golden Globes , the Migos and Lil Uzi Vert ’s "Bad and Boujee " landed Metro Boomin his first No. 1 Billboard hit as a producer.

The song has every element Metro fans have grown to love: moody keys, hard-hitting bass, and plenty of room for the artists’ adlibs to pierce through the track.

Two months before its eventual ascension, the song had a steep hill to climb atop the Billboard charts. But Metro’s production and the chemistry between Quavo , Offset , and Uzi helped the record shoot up to its rightful place. It continues to garner praise In the years since its 2016 release, too. It was ranked No. 451 on Rolling Stone ’s "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list

"Mask Off" (2017)

When "Mask Off" dropped in 2017, it scorched the Billboard charts. Hip-hop was flirting with flutes (as heard on songs like Drake’s "Portland" and Kodak Black’s "Tunnel Vision" — another Metro-produced beat) — but "Mask Off" stands out as the biggest song of the short-lived era.

Metro infused jazz-like undertones to perfectly meld the flute lick into the dark and mystic beat. The record led to the remix with Kendrick Lamar, with his verse breathing new life into the already-seismic hit. It’s now certified nine times platinum.

Years after the song’s release, Future said "Mask Off" initially put radio programmers in disarray. In his East Atlanta rapper’s Apple Music documentary The WIZRD, he revealed that the song dropped before Carlton WIlliams’ "Prison Song" sample was officially cleared. "Out of all the songs, ‘Mask Off’ wasn’t even legit," he said. "The s— was on the radio, they’re thinking it’s not a sample, but it got so big they were like, ‘It’s a sample.’"

"Heartless" (2019)

The Weeknd 's "Heartless" is a pop and electro-clash classic that fires on all cylinders. The visuals are atmospheric, the lyrics are ultra-stimulating, and the production — partly handled by Metro — makes for a lasting club banger.

The leading single for The Weeknd’s fourth studio album, After Hours, topped the Billboard charts. It marked the Toronto-born crooner’s fourth No. 1 hit and unveiled the depths of Metro’s musical arsenal.

Metro produced four tracks on After Hours : "Faith," "Escape from L.A.," "Until I Bleed Out" and "Heartless." On the latter and in his other collaborations with The Weeknd , James Blake , and Solange , Metro’s creative sorcery was tested. He proved, once again, that he could generate a hit outside the confines of trap music.

" Creepin ’ " ( 2022)

After a solid outing on his first album Not All Heroes Wear Capes , Metro returned with another series of hard-hitting records. His second solo venture, Heroes & Villains , featured John Legend , Don Tolliver , Travis Scott , and other premiere artists. But the biggest song to come out of the star-studded lineup was " Creepin ’" featuring 21 Savage and The Weeknd .

The only single to Metro’s second solo album struck sonic gold. The Weeknd’s flowy vocals overlay the silky and harmonic record, which transitions to a more trap-induced beat once 21 Savage’s verse kicks in. The remake of Mario Winans’ "I Don’t Wanna Know" was a notable departure from Metro’s past singles, which heavily lean on his trap roots. But it still managed to connect with his audience – and even beyond it. " Creepin " peaked at No. 3 on Billboard, which was Metro’s highest-charting solo record up until that point.

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (2023)

Following the success of " Creepin ’" and his other smash singles, Metro extended his creative powers to the film world. He was given the green light to executive produce the soundtrack for Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse .

Metro Boomin told Indie Wire that he crafted songs from rough animations and selected scenes "just to get in the world and the story of Miles [Morales] and what he’s going through," He even exchanged phone calls and texts with the film’s composer Daniel Pemberton to ensure the soundtrack and score were on the same accord.

From the classical serenade "Am I Dreaming" to the Latin swing of "Silk & Cologne" and the Timbaland -stomping "Nas Morales," the result was an equally transformative musical experience. Each record ranged in musicality and tone while beautifully complementing the vibrant animated superhero flick.

"Like That" (2024)

"Like That" is easily one of the best beats in Metro’s catalog, and may end up being one of the most memorable. Samples from Rodney O & Joe Cooley’s "Everlasting Bass" and Eazy-E’s 1989 classic "Eazy-Duz-It" shaped the bouncy trap beat, sinister synths, and spine-chilling baseline. But Kendrick Lamar’s verse turned it into a heat-seeking missile.

With the song’s thunderous bass and rapid hi-hats in the background, Kendrick dissed J. Cole and Drake for their recent claims of rap supremacy, particularly on 2023’s "First Person Shooter." The lyrical nuke sparked the Civil War-style rap feud, which led to a seven-song exchange between Kendrick and Drake.

The initial musical blow made the genre stand still. It also led to the massive success of the record, which notched Future and Metro another No. 1 hit song. It also helped the pair’s album, We Don’t Trust You, claim the top spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

These are the 22 must-see concert tours for 2024

With every new year comes artists that release new music. To help support the music, they typically announce tours that coincide with it, allowing fans to catch their favorite artists in different cities to perform the new tunes and the classics.

While some artists are using the stage as a farewell, others are bringing fans into a new era. Here is a list of tours that are sure to be the hottest tickets in town.

Justin Timberlake

After a six-year hiatus since his previous album Man of the Woods, Justin Timberlake is back with his sixth studio album Everything I Thought I Was.  In support of his new album, Timberlake is hitting the road across North America with his "The Forget Tomorrow World Tour." The singer will start his trek on April 29th in Vancouver and end on July 9th in Kentucky.

Megan Thee Stallion

Just two years since her previous album Traumazine , the world's resident hottie Megan Thee Stallion is heating up the charts with her latest single "Hiss." Upon the heels of her latest release, Megan interviewed with Good Morning America and revealed that her new album is on the way and she'll be embarking on the "Hot Girl Summer Tour."

2024 might be the year of Usher. After being crowned the king of Las Vegas due to his three-year sold-out residency at Caesar’s Palace and MGM Dolby Live, in late 2023 the NFL announced Usher as the halftime show performer for Super Bowl LVIII. Shortly after the halftime news, Usher announced he would be releasing his ninth album Coming Home, and embarking on his worldwide "Past, Present, Future" tour set to kick off in August. For fans still eager to secure tickets, the R&B legend has partnered with Rémy Martin on a nationwide sweepstakes, giving fans the opportunity to win tickets to select tour dates. By the way, Usher's halftime performance at SB LVIII was a rousing success .

Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are keeping their fans fed with live shows. "The Unlimited Love Tour" started back in 2022 and continued through 2023, and the band has continued to extend it this year with an additional 16 shows. This time around, they're bringing a few special guests along, including Kid Cudi, Ice Cube, Ken Carson, and more. The Red Hot Chili Peppers will wrap the tour up on July 30th in St. Louis.

Bad Bunny started his North America trek on February 21st, which will run through May 26th. When he made an Instagram post promoting the tour, he made it clear saying, “If you’re not a real fan, don’t come.”

Janet Jackson

In 2023, Janet Jackson embarked on her sold-out "Together Again" tour with special guest Ludacris. Well, she’s bringing the tour back again, and this time she’s bringing Nelly along for the ride. Jackson and Nelly will trek across 35 cities including Chicago, New Orleans, Toronto, and Los Angeles.

Although tickets on Ticketmaster for her shows are currently sold out, fans can still snag tickets on secondary platforms like Vivid Seats and StubHub. The "Weekends with Adele" residency will have its final show on June 15th.

Drake and J. Cole

Thanks to the success of their 2023 collaboration “First Person Shooter,” Drake and J. Cole are hitting the road for their "It's All A Blur Tour—Big as the What?" tour. While Drake recently wrapped up his joint tour with 21 Savage, this time around, he and Cole are touring cities in smaller markets. The tour will begin on February 2nd in Tampa, Fla., and end on April 16th in Denver, Co.

"The Everything or Nothing at All Tour" will kick off on July 17th in New York City and close out on August 18th in Seattle.

While 2024 marks the end of Billy Joel’s long-running Madison Square Garden residency, he’s still taking his show on the road across several stadiums. For a few of the select shows, Joel will be joined by legendary acts Sting and Stevie Nicks.

Nicki Minaj

After a five-year hiatus since her previous album Queen, Nicki Minaj returned in 2023 with her long-awaited album  Pink Friday 2. To help celebrate the new album, Minaj’s fan base (the Barbz) is in for a treat as she embarks on "The Pink Friday 2 World Tour" starting in March. Minaj is also slated to make appearances at festivals like Rolling Loud California and Dreamville.

The Rolling Stones

Even after six decades since their first U.S. tour, The Rolling Stones are still in high demand for live shows. The rock band is set to hit the road on a 16-city tour to support their latest album Hackney Diamonds. The tour will run from April 28th through July 17th.

The time has come to say farewell to Sum 41. Back in May 2023, the band announced they would be calling it quits as a group. After the release of their album Heaven :x: Hell, they announced their final shows as "Tour of the Setting Sun." Joined by special guest The Interrupters, the tour is set to take place across Asia, Europe, and North America.

In December 2023, Dreamville artist Bas released his long-awaited fourth album We Only Talk About Real S—t   When We’re F—d   Up which featured several collaborations alongside J. Cole, Amaarae, Adekunle Gold, and more. To help support the album, Bas is taking his music on the road with a 23-city North America tour. Bas will begin the tour on March 3rd in Dallas and wrap up on April 9th in New York.

Olivia Rodrigo

Just two years after her first headlining tour, rising star Olivia Rodrigo is embarking on her "GUTS World Tour." In celebration of her sophomore album Guts, she will take on 77 shows, joined by openers The Breeders, Chappell Roan, PinkPantheress, and Remi Wolf. Rodrigo began the tour on February 23rd in Thousand Palms and will wrap it up on August 17th in Inglewood.

In support of his latest album Standing Room Only, country legend Tim McGraw is bringing his talent to the stage. The three-time Grammy winner’s tour will begin on March 14th in Jacksonville and end on June 27th in Phoenix.

Tamia and Joe

For the R&B lovers, get ready to hear love ballads and smooth jams from two of the genre’s finest, Tamia and Joe. The tour kicked off on February 9th in Washington D.C. and will end on May 4th in St. Louis.

Pop singer Tate McRae has been on a hot streak in 2023. From her hit song “Greedy,” to releasing her sophomore album Think Later, to an epic  Saturday Night Live performance, it seems like McRae is ready to take her career to another level. This year, she's set to embark on the "Think Later" 2024 tour, which kicks off April 17th in Dublin, Ireland. Joining McRae as her opening acts will be charlieonnafriday and Presley Regier.

Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band postponed their 2023 tour after the singer had to treat a health matter, but the band is ready to take their show on the road this year. The tour is set to kick off on March 19th in Phoenix, Arizona, and other cities on the trek will include San Diego, Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., and more.

Green Day is headed out for a stadium tour and they’re bringing a few friends with them. The pop-punk trio will embark on the "Saviors Tour" that will include acts Rancid and The Linda Lindas, as well as The Smashing Pumpkins. In support of the band’s newest album Saviors, the North American leg of the tour will kick off on July 29th in Washington, D.C.

Jewel and Melissa Etheridge

Country music fans, get ready to unite as Jewel and Melissa Etheridge co-headline a tour for the summer. The North America tour is set to kick off on July 11th in Montana and will end on October 5th in Arkansas.

Kamala Harris, Hoping to Build Momentum, Plans Battleground State Tour Next Week

After accepting the nomination, Ms. Harris was flying back to Washington on Friday for a weekend respite before returning to the campaign trail next week.

By Reid J. Epstein and Katie Rogers

Reid J. Epstein and Katie Rogers cover the Kamala Harris presidential campaign. They reported from Chicago.

Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign for president is entering a new phase, shifting from a 33-day sprint to the convention to something more familiar: Preparing for a debate and pivoting to getting out the vote.

On Friday afternoon, Ms. Harris plans to fly back from Chicago to Washington, where she will spend the weekend decompressing from the mind-spinning turn of events that led to her accepting the Democratic nomination for president on Thursday night.

She will begin preparing for what will be her first national interview — which she has said will take place by the end of August — and for the Sept. 10 debate with Donald J. Trump, according to campaign officials briefed on her plans who were not authorized to reveal them before they are formally announced.

The officials said Ms. Harris will return to the campaign trail next week with events in multiple battleground states, where she will aim to extend the enthusiasm generated at this week’s convention in Chicago.

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, her running mate who was plucked from relative political obscurity 17 days ago, will return to his state before heading back on the campaign trail next week.

Presidential candidates typically come out of their conventions trying to build momentum with bus tours or rallies. Ms. Harris’s choice to delay the traditional barnstorming reflects the supercharged pace of the last few weeks and the changed nature of modern campaigns, where social media posts can be as important as speeches. It also is evidence of a shift from a sprint to more of a middle-distance effort that requires endurance and speed in equal measures.

“Campaigns often do barnstorm, but this has been such a compressed schedule for her and she has a debate in 17 days,” said David Axelrod, the veteran Democratic strategist who worked on Barack Obama’s campaigns. “A little downtime and maybe even prep would make sense. As we just saw they have a plethora of first-rate surrogates who can and should be deployed when she is not.”

While Mr. Obama in 2012 left his re-election convention in Charlotte, N.C., for a swing through battleground states including Iowa and Florida — where he was memorably lifted into the air by a pizza proprietor — campaigns today rely less on the local media coverage generated by stumping across the country.

Campaigns now seek to reach voters as much on social media apps as in person, a reality that was evident in how the Democratic National Convention gave status to influencers willing to cheer for Ms. Harris and spread the campaign’s message that was equal to or better than what it gave the traditional press corps at the United Center.

Ms. Harris’s self-imposed deadline for a national interview, next Saturday, presents the next hurdle for Ms. Harris. It will be a break from the rhythm of stadium rallies she has hosted since she named Mr. Walz her running mate.

Mr. Trump does not have a robust campaign schedule in the coming days either.

The Republican nominee sought to divert attention to himself during the Democratic National Convention, holding an event each day in a different battleground state. Mr. Trump plans on Friday to cap the week’s events in Las Vegas and in Arizona, where his campaign has teased a special guest that many expect to be Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who suspended his independent campaign for president on Friday and endorsed Mr. Trump.

Mr. Trump is then expected to spend the weekend at his golf club in Sterling, Va., according to two people familiar with his plans. But he does not have any public events scheduled until Monday, when he will address the National Guard Association of the United States in Detroit.

“President Trump will be working nonstop like he always does and doing an interview this weekend, which is one more interview than Kamala has done in 33 days,” said Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for the Trump campaign.

Mr. Trump did not remain quiet after his convention. Two days after it ended in Milwaukee, he traveled to Michigan for his first joint rally with his newly crowned running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio.

Queens of the Stone Age has canceled the remainder of its 2024 shows due to lead singer Josh Homme’s ongoing medical issues.

“QOTSA regret to announce the cancellation and/or postponement of all remaining 2024 shows,” the band said in an update posted Friday on social media. “Josh has been given no choice but to prioritize his health and to receive essential medical care through the year.”

Shows in Boston, Cincinnati and Madison, Wisc., have been postponed to next year. The band’s festival appearances — including fall sets at Soundside Music Festival, Mempho Music Festival and Corona Capital Festival in Mexico City — have been canceled altogether. Ticket holders for QOTSA shows will be contacted by point of purchase with further information about new dates, and festival ticket holders were advised to visit the specific event sites for updated information.

A representative for the band declined to comment further Friday.

Homme, 51, who grew up in Palm Desert and started his music career there , was diagnosed with cancer in 2022 but said he had recovered after undergoing surgery.

The band paused its European tour in early July so that the singer could immediately return to the U.S. for emergency surgery. It’s unclear if the surgery was related to his cancer diagnosis, because no specifics about the procedure were given.

“Every effort was made to push through and play for you, but it is no longer an option to continue,” the alt-rock band said at the time in a post on social media, confirming the cancellation of eight shows over the summer.

The band — whose other members are guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen, bassist Michael Shuman, keyboardist Dean Fertita and drummer Jon Theodore — canceled its festival appearances in France and Slovakia because of the singer-guitarist’s departure. The group’s shows in Germany, Austria, Romania, Croatia and Greece were also canceled.

About a week before that announcement, the “No One Knows” and “The Way You Used to Do” band canceled its appearance at Italy’s AMA Festival “due to illness,” although it did not indicate in that announcement who had fallen ill.

But on Friday, in its newest statement, the band said, “Josh and the QOTSA family are so thankful for your support and the time we were able to spend together over the last year. Hope to see you all again in 2025.”

Taylor Swift opens up about Vienna concert attack threat: ‘New sense of fear’

Authorities accused two people of planning attacks on Swift’s Vienna shows, prompting their cancellation. Swift said she waited until the end of her Eras Tour European leg to speak out.

as tour 2024

Taylor Swift issued her first statement on the cancellation of three of her shows in Vienna after authorities foiled a suspected planned attack on the venue , speaking of newfound fears as she continues her worldwide Eras Tour and explaining her muted public reaction until now.

“Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating,” the singer-songwriter wrote on Instagram . “The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows.”

Swift also expressed her gratitude to authorities: “Thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives.”

Swift was expected to draw more than 150,000 people for three consecutive nights of her show at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium this month. Austrian authorities arrested two people — a 19-year-old and a 17-year-old — and accused them of planning attacks on large-scale gatherings, including Swift’s shows, in Austria’s capital.

Authorities said that the 19-year-old, whom they consider the main suspect, pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and that they found explosive devices during a search of his house.

Swift said she waited until the European leg of her tour concluded before speaking about the Vienna cancellations.

“I decided that all of my energy had to go toward helping to protect the nearly half a million people I had coming to see the shows in London,” she wrote, referring to her shows at Wembley Stadium, which were scheduled to follow the Vienna concerts.

“Let me be very clear: I am not going to speak about something publicly if I think doing so might provoke those who would want to harm the fans who come to my shows,” she added. “In cases like this one, ‘silence’ is actually showing restraint, and waiting to express yourself at a time when it’s right to.”

The Style section

The suspects’ plan was to attack people listening to the concert outside the stadium, an Austrian security official told The Washington Post this month, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

In interviews with law enforcement, the suspect said “he wanted to carry out the attack using explosives and cutting and stabbing weapons,” said Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, the head of Austria’s Directorate for Security and Intelligence, adding that his aim was “to kill himself and a large crowd at the concert.”

Matt Gaetz's primary is the last stop on Kevin McCarthy's revenge tour

Rep. Matt Gaetz’s primary in Florida on Tuesday presents the last opportunity for former Speaker Kevin McCarthy to exact revenge on the Republicans who ousted him last year.

Gaetz, however, is the heavy favorite as he faces Navy veteran Aaron Dimmock in Tuesday’s primary, when voters head to the polls in Florida, Wyoming and Alaska.

McCarthy, R-Calif., has backed Dimmock, and Florida Patriots PAC, a group tied to McCarthy's allies, has spent $3.5 million on ads against Gaetz, according to the ad-tracking firm AdImpact. The group has run ads referring to an ongoing Ethics Committee investigation into Gaetz over alleged drug use and sexual misconduct. Gaetz has criticized the investigation as “frivolous.”

But Florida Patriots PAC stopped spending in the race three weeks ago, a sign that Gaetz is in an advantageous position.

Kevin McCarthy and Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz.

Gaetz is the final member of the GOP cohort that voted to remove McCarthy as speaker to face a primary this year. While most members of that group who ran for re-election have won renomination, House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good, of Virginia, lost a close primary this summer.

Unlike Good, Gaetz has a crucial endorsement in his race: former President Donald Trump. Gaetz has touted Trump’s support on the airwaves, with one TV ad featuring audio of Trump saying Gaetz is “a very good person and he’s a very capable man. You ever watch this guy on television? Like a machine. He’s great. He loves Florida and he loves the country.”

McCarthy has acknowledged that Gaetz could be tough to beat in his conservative 1st District this year. But he suggested to reporters at last month's Republican National Convention that he may also be trying to damage Gaetz's standing ahead of a potential statewide bid in 2026.

“I don’t think he’ll ever be able to run for governor like he wants to,” McCarthy said, according to The Independent.

Trump, who cast his Florida primary ballot last week, has backed every other member of the state's GOP delegation up for re-election, including Sen. Rick Scott. That race will be set Tuesday, with Scott expected to face former Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, who's leading in the polls in the Democratic primary.

Trump’s endorsement is also on the line in the primary in Florida’s 8th District to replace retiring GOP Rep. Bill Posey. The former president has backed former state Sen. Mike Haridopolos, who has been the top GOP fundraiser in the race and who has gotten a boost on the airwaves from two aligned outside groups.

Florida’s primaries will also officially set the matchups in four competitive House races, with GOP Reps. Anna Paulina Luna and Maria Elvira Salazar and Democratic Reps. Darren Soto and Jared Moskowitz defending their seats in November.

But the most expensive primary in the state, at least when it comes to ad spending, is a state Senate contest that has drawn more than $10 million on the airwaves.

Trump is involved here, too, endorsing former St. Johns County Sheriff David Shoar. But he is running against some heavy hitters in the GOP primary. State Rep. Tom Leek, the former head of the Appropriations Committee, is backed by a slew of major Republicans in the state, like Scott, Gov. Ron DeSantis and Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez. And Gerry James is backed by former GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and other conservative groups.

Alaska opportunity

Tuesday’s primaries will also tee up the general election contest in Alaska’s at-large congressional district. Rep. Mary Peltola is a top GOP target as one of five Democrats representing a district Trump carried in 2020. Trump won Alaska by 10 points four years ago.

In Alaska, the top four vote-getters in the primary, regardless of party affiliation, advance to the November election, which is then decided by ranked-choice voting. That dynamic helped Peltola win a special election in 2022 and a full term that November.

The top two GOP candidates in the race are Nick Begich, who comes from a well-known political family in the state, and Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom. Trump and other GOP leaders, including Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., have endorsed Dahlstrom.

Begich is back for another run after losing in 2022, and he has support from the political arm of the hard-right House Freedom Caucus.

While Begich has pledged to drop out if he finishes behind Dahlstrom in the primary, Dahlstrom has not committed to doing the same.

Meanwhile, in Wyoming, Sen. John Barrasso and Rep. Harriet Hageman aren't facing serious primary threats in the heavily conservative state.
