Study abroad: Eligibility and how to apply

Study abroad is a program for students where there is no reciprocal exchange agreement. You enrol and pay fees directly to the University of Sydney, but are not enrolled in a full degree here.

Why study abroad instead of exchange?

A foreign student would typically choose to complete study abroad over student exchange for the following reasons:

  • your home institution has no reciprocal exchange partner agreement with the University of Sydney
  • your home institution only has a limited number of places available for student exchange, and you have not managed to secure one
  • depending on what country you live in, it may be cheaper for you to come to the University of Sydney on study abroad over student exchange.

Eligibility

  • have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale, or an average grade of ‘C’ or better on the European ECTS grading scale (or equivalent).
  • meet the  English entry requirements .

Gap year or first year students

If you're just finishing secondary school or in your first year of university, this program is an excellent way to earn credit at the University of Sydney. With over 170 semester-long units of study with no prerequisites or assumed knowledge, you’re spoilt for choice.

  • be assessed on your secondary qualification
  • need to meet the  English entry requirements .

  • a one-page research proposal
  • written confirmation of support from a supervisor both at the University of Sydney and your home university. Find a research opportunity or a potential supervisor .

Step 2: Receive and accept your offer letter

You will receive your offer letter via email. It will include instructions on how to log in to your  Sydney Student  account and respond to your offer. You will need to pay your tuition, deposit and/or Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) before you can apply for your visa.

Step 3: Apply for your student visa

Once you've completed Step 2, you will receive your Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE). You need your eCoE for your visa application. You can check visa application details through the  Department of Home Affairs .

Application timelines

In 2024, the fees are:

  • Tuition fee for one semester (24 credit points): $12,600
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for 6 months: $356*
  • Textbooks: $200-300

Student exchange programs: Eligibility and how to apply

Student exchange programs are available to students who are enrolled in one of our 250 overseas partner universities. When you come as an exchange student, your tuition fees are paid to your home university.

  • be enrolled at one of our partner universities
  • be nominated by your home university, so you must apply through their exchange program
  • meet our  English entry requirements

Apply through your home university's exchange program. They'll then guide you through the process.

You will pay your usual tuition fees and study costs to your home institution. You are best to check with your home institution to make sure everything is covered — they will advise you if there are any extra costs associated with coming here.

Choose your subjects

Browse our  course finder  to choose your units of study (subjects).

For one semester, you’ll typically enrol in four units of study (each valued at 6 credit points) to make up a workload of 24 credit points. For a one-year program, you will enrol in 48 credit points across two semesters.

For  short-term programs (pdf, 2.8MB) , you can choose one or two intensive units of study, each valued at 6 credit points.

You need to:

  • check that you meet any requirements, including prerequisites
  • make sure you can get credit toward your degree for the subjects you choose. You will need to confirm this with your home institution.

Our advisors will give you advice on your preferred units of study, and guide you through the enrolment process.

Internships

Our Study Abroad Internship program lets you develop familiarity with Australian workplace culture and apply your study to workplace situations.  ARTS2600  is a unit of study that is open only to study abroad students and offers:

  • 120 hours of industry placement

At this College, we recommend the Multiplan policy. Travel insurance requirements As this course includes a total of three months’ travel outside Australia, travel insurance is compulsory. If you are sick or have an accident in Australia, your medical bills will be fully covered – however, you cannot assume that everything will be covered overseas, so please read the following requirements carefully. 1. Medical      Australia has reciprocal medical arrangements with the governments of the eight nations you will be visiting. This arrangement will cover all emergency hospital treatment. However, students will have to take out insurance such as Multiplan to cover the costs of all visits to doctors, and other non-emergency medical situations. If you have a serious accident or illness, Multiplan insurance will cover the cost of your flight back to Australia, if required. Depending on the circumstances, this may also pay for either medical personnel or a family member to accompany you home. Multiplan insurance may not cover all pre-existing medical conditions – so before you leave be sure to check with them about any long-term illnesses or disabilities that you have. If you do require medical treatment overseas, and you want to make a claim on your insurance, the claim will not be accepted unless you produce both your student card and your travel insurance card. 2. Belongings      The Multiplan policy covers most student requirements. In particular, it provides students with luggage insurance. This covers any loss or theft of your everyday belongings. For example, this insurance covers: •  the present value of items that are stolen, provided that you  have purchase receipts for every item; if no receipts, no payment can be made •  replacement value of your briefcase or backpack and study books •  portable computers and CD players, if you specifically list them as items in the policy 3. Cancellation      This insurance covers any non-refundable deposit and other costs you have paid if you have to cancel due to ‘unforeseen or unforeseeable circumstances outside your control’. It does not provide cover if you change your study or travel plans for other reasons.

Questions 7–14

Classify the following events as being …

A.  covered by government arrangements    B.  covered by the Multiplan policy    C.  not covered by the Multiplan policy    D.  covered in some situations

Write the correct letter,  A, B, C  or  D  in boxes  7-14  on your answer sheet. 7.   A student travelling overseas suddenly needs hospital treatment. 8.  A student consults a doctor regarding a minor problem while abroad. 9.  A parent goes overseas to bring an injured or sick student to Australia. 10.  A student is treated overseas for an illness he/she had before leaving Australia. 11.  A student who requires medical treatment has lost his/her travel insurance card. 12.  A student’s study books are lost. 13.  A student’s laptop is stolen. 14.  A student changes his/her mind about plans to study and decides not to take the booked flight.

Sydney visiting Puerto Varas, Chile

Chile, Argentina, Uruguay & USA Specialist

I started my career in travel when I moved to Thailand in 2018, after a year of teaching English Development I transitioned into the luxury travel sector.

In 2019, I joined Audley’s Boston office, specializing in travel throughout Southeast Asia before transitioning over to South America. Through annual trips to Chile, Argentina and most recently Uruguay, over the past years I’ve gained a significant insight into the cultural highlights within the region. With countless positive experiences one of my most memorable is traveling through Patagonia with my parents. They love the outdoors and being able to share such a unique trip with them hiking through the most iconic region in the world is unforgettable.

I currently live in Montana, where I enjoy weekend backpacking trips throughout the state and flyfishing on the Yellowstone River. I enjoy exploring the national parks and catching glimpse of some of the animals that call this state home as well.

Q&A with Sydney

Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone National Park

Your best piece of travel advice?

The best piece of travel advice I’ve carried with me and pass along is actually from my father. He travelled all over the world for work and was constantly moving around. He always said that the best way to enjoy yourself and have the best possible experience is to be flexible and expect complications. By being mentally prepared you’re already in the mindset that there might be a few hiccups and then nothing is a surprise. Things tend to work themselves out but by having a good attitude puts you in the best position to enjoy your trip.

Sydney in Torres Del Paine, Chile

What’s your most vivid travel moment?

I currently live in Montana and a big part of my day to day is exploring the local mountain ranges. I’ve had Patagonia on my bucket list for years, most specifically Torres Del Paine in Chile which is the ultimate hiker’s playground. In 2023, Audley was able to check off that box for me. I spent a week in Torres Del Paine completing some of the most amazing hikes. One of my favorite moments was after trekking for 21 km (13 miles) in the Patagonia climate of rain, snow, wind, and hail. When we finally made it to the top it was cloudy and hard to tell if the towers were actually there. A few minutes later the clouds parted and the sun came out exposing the three towers and the glacier blue lake below them. It was incredible and worth the hard work getting there.

Magellanic penguins - Bahia Bustamante

Where would you love to travel next?

In South America, there are so many hidden gems especially in Chile and Argentina. One place I keep hearing incredible stories about is Bahia Bustamante. The New York Times wrote an article about the types of animals that gather here and how exceptional it is. There’s one lodge that is off the grid allowing the natural beauty to be its main highlight. I would love to explore Bahia Bustamante on my next trip to Argentina.

UCLA will travel 89% of Earth's distance in miles amid college football realignment

James parks | jul 10, 2024.

UCLA has the longest travel schedule of any Power Four college football team after this year's conference realignment.

  • UCLA Bruins

Slogging through a long commute is a fact of life in Los Angeles, but UCLA will face a travel schedule unlike any team in college football this season after the school joined the Big Ten as part of this year's historic conference realignment .

Looking ahead to the travel map in 2024, UCLA will end up covering a distance that almost rivals that of the Earth itself in miles.

In fact, no other Power conference school will travel as much as the Bruins this fall, with the team expected to cover 22,134 miles to and from their six road games this football season.

That number falls just 2,767 miles short of the circumference of the planet, meaning UCLA will end up covering an estimated 89 percent of the way around the world in pure mileage terms.

Hawaii: 5,126 round-trip miles LSU: 3,198 miles Penn State: 4,498 miles Rutgers: 4,856 miles Nebraska: 2,538 miles Washington: 1,918 miles

That total mileage number is inflated partly by two early road games on UCLA's schedule, including the long voyage off the continent to play at Hawaii in the opener, and the trip east to visit LSU, two of the team's first four games this season.

That's part of a brutal early slate that includes a home date against Oregon after that, followed by the cross-country trip to Penn State, and a flight to New Jersey to play Rutgers two weeks later.

And then after a bye week following that game, another trip, to visit Nebraska in Lincoln.

UCLA isn't alone in facing a far longer commute after conference realignment. Other West Coast teams are in for the same slog, like Cal, which will cover 83 percent of the Earth's surface in miles as it joins the ACC and faces road games at Auburn, Florida State, Wake Forest, and Pittsburgh.

Big Ten newcomers Washington and Oregon will travel almost 17,000 miles and more than 12,000 miles, respectively, in their road games this year.

USC, which also makes its Big Ten debut this fall, will travel an estimated 13,356 miles going to its road games, nearly 54 percent of the Earth's circumference in miles.

Luckily for the Trojans, one of their home games is against UCLA, a mere 15 miles in distance from its campus to the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena.

Hawaii, as always, still holds the yearly record in college football among all level programs when it comes to travel: the Rainbow Warriors will cover an estimated 29,752 miles this season, a full 5,000 miles more than the distance around the Earth at the equator.

Tropical Depression Beryl tracker: See projected path, spaghetti models, latest details

travel college in sydney

Update: The National Hurricane Center is now watching a disturbance in the southeastern U.S. coast. Here's the latest storm tracker .

Tropical Depression Beryl is forecast to move northeastward, bringing heavy rain and flooding to central Arkansas and the Lower Ohio Valley Tuesday night and into the Lower Great Lakes and New England on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

"Widespread heavy rains and thunderstorms are likely along and to the northeast of the path of Beryl over the next two days," the NWS said, with rainfall totals of 2-5 inches expected from central Arkansas all the way up to parts of Vermont and New Hampshire.

Beryl unleashed a barrage of severe weather to southeast Texas on Monday, killing at least four people, flooding highways,  closing oil ports , canceling more than 1,300 flights, and knocking out power to more than 2.7 million homes and businesses.

According to the  National Hurricane Center , Beryl, the season's earliest Category 5 hurricane on record, weakened from a hurricane after pounding the coastal Texas town of Matagorda, a coastal community between Corpus Christi and Galveston. It had sustained winds of more than 80 mph as it made landfall at 4 a.m. CT.

Last week,  Beryl carved a path of destruction across the Caribbean  — leaving at least 11 people dead and destroying or severely damaging infrastructure on several islands. Beryl, which at one point strengthened into the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record, last made landfall on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula Friday morning.

Beryl is now a post-tropical cyclone: See path and spaghetti models for post-tropical cyclone, hurricane remnants

This forecast track shows the most likely path of the center of the storm. It does not illustrate the full width of the storm or its impacts, and the center of the storm is likely to travel outside the cone up to 33% of the time.

Research suggests zinc supplementation prior to transport can benefit cattle welfare, performance

Cattle-handling facility where researchers collect blood samples and weigh cattle. Black steer in chute has painted number on its back.

AMES, IA – Beef cattle are likely to be transported at least once during their lives and are often moved several times at different stages of production. During each transition, they may travel for hours, standing in moving, vibrating trailers. Upon arrival, their new situations and pen mates are unfamiliar. Not surprisingly, during the hours and days post-transit, fatigued, stressed animals tend to eat and drink less and are more susceptible to disease.

Research underway at Iowa State University is investigating the potential of boosting zinc levels before transport as a low-cost, easy way to ease animals’ muscle fatigue during transit, improve their health and increase their long-term growth. The new study, led by Stephanie Hansen, professor of animal science, builds on her earlier work reported in the  Journal of Animal Science , which found that increasing zinc supplementation after transport can improve the performance of growing feedlot steers.

Zinc is a natural mineral with low toxicity known to assist muscle growth and recovery after exercise. Cattle fed on forage and hay naturally consume zinc at higher levels, but it is generally lower in the corn-based diets given to feedlot animals.

After learning that higher levels of zinc in cattle diets post-transport could improve cattle health and productivity, Hansen wondered if increasing zinc levels before transport would have similar benefits.

She has completed the first year of a three-year project to find out. The study looks at cattle trucked for either eight or 18 hours. Prior to being moved, their diets were supplemented with two levels of zinc. A control set of animals did not receive any additional zinc. After the cattle reached their destination, each one was followed to identify post-transit performance (such as standing behavior and feeding activity), feed intake and growth. Biochemical characteristics related to blood and muscle metabolism were also analyzed.

Preliminary results show animals fed extra zinc before transit had significant improvements in performance and indicators of health. After a 42-day “preconditioning” period prior to trucking, cattle fed 100 ppm of Zn from zinc sulfate were 13 pounds heavier. That would mean more pounds of animal to sell.

In their prior study, Hansen found zinc decreased lactate, a marker of muscle fatigue. While zinc has not been found to impact lactate in the present study, the zinc-fed cattle did recover their feed intake more quickly than non-zinc-fed animals after arriving at their new location, replicating earlier findings that zinc status seems to drive feed intake. This is essential for cattle to replenish energy stores lost during trucking.

“The results of the study so far are compelling. They strongly support the value of boosting zinc supplementation pre-transit as an inexpensive and practical way to improve animal health, performance and welfare,” Hansen said.

Graduate students in work clothes pose in front of with cattle trailer.

If the project continues to show these benefits, she is interested in working with ranchers on a preconditioning nutritional program for beef cattle that could qualify animals for a price premium.

Animal science graduate students in Hansen’s lab assisting with the project include Allison Baumhover and Brock Ortner. They will give presentations on their work at the American Society of Animal Science Meeting in Calgary, Alberta, in late July.

This grant, supported by USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, builds on Hansen’s prior study, funded by industry.

“Our earlier project was important to develop data that I could use to apply for this USDA grant, which has more of a mechanism-of-action focus, with stronger implications for animal welfare,” Hansen said. “I really appreciate it when we can provide service to the industry while collecting information that also advances science.”
