These Wineries Are Rethinking the Napa Valley Tasting Experience
From underground sanctuaries to horseback-led tours, these experiences offer more than the conventional tasting..

The winery tasting experience is so universal that you often know what to expect before you arrive: a row of glasses; a few pours; perhaps some cheese; a comment or two about aromas or tannins. But it doesn’t have to always be that way.
Several wineries in the Napa Valley are reimagining the experience. They’re offering tastings in unusual environments or matching them with ATV adventures, horseback rides, or unconventional food pairings. Here are some places that are rethinking the whole thing.
Jarvis Estate Winery (Napa)
- Go for: an atmospheric subterranean tasting room
- Make reservations
The hills covered with native grasses and trees on Atlas Peak northeast of Napa are so beautiful that Jarvis Estate Winery owners Leticia and William Jarvis built underground to preserve the landscape.
For visitors, each step deeper into the dusty tunnels with parabolic curves and moody lighting, past curved bronze doorways, oversize casks, and metal tanks, builds intrigue. The sound of rushing water creates anticipation for the moment you arrive at an underground waterfall not far from the tasting room. Here, estate-grown Burgundian chardonnays, silky cabernet francs, and merlot blends are precise and full of personality.
RD Winery (Napa)
RD’s wine and small bite pairings make use of Asian-inspired flavors.
Jessie Beck
- Go for: inspiring food pairings
During most tastings, there’s a moment when the host says something like this sauvignon blanc is delicious with sushi— but you’re nibbling on a breadstick. “Unless you experience it, it’s hard to imagine how those pairings would work,” says Mailynh Phan, CEO of RD Winery , Napa’s only Vietnamese-owned wine brand.
The winery’s pan-Asian Fifth Moon pairing menu matches varietals like grüner veltliner with green curry–dusted popcorn and rosé with spicy chilled melon soup. Pork bao complements both the tart red fruit in the RD zinfandel and the alluring Hundred Knot grenache. Whether you’re on the patio, or in the serene blue tasting room, you’ll come away with a new wine pairing inspiration.
Inglenook (Rutherford)
- Go for: A cinematic experience
The journey up Inglenook’s long tree-lined front drive feels like a scene from a movie, which is not surprising given proprietor Francis Ford Coppola’s flair for dramatic scenes.
The winery, which produced its first vintage in 1882, is filled with his favorite things, including a collection of vintage movie viewers and the car from the film Tucker . A highlight is the Athenaeum—a library with Gothic vaulted ceilings that’s filled with books, music, art, and games.
Get cozy with some estate cabernet sauvignon to the sounds of vintage jazz recordings by Miles Davis or Louis Armstrong, or perhaps a 1964 João Gilberto and Stan Getz album. Don’t miss original paintings by Robert DeNiro Sr. and director Akira Kurosawa.
The Terraces (Rutherford)
- Go for: a huge rural escape ripe for exploration
A pink and green cow visible from the Silverado Trail is the only clue to the immersive wine, art, and nature experience that awaits at the Terraces , an estate winery tucked into the Rutherford hills. Co-owner Sharon Crull says an ATV is the best way to explore the 120-acre property, which includes cider orchards, art installations, and a historic stone building.
After a stop for a balsamic vinegar tasting that includes seeing the tiny wood casks where it’s aged, head back to the winery for husband Timm Crull’s estate hard apple cider made like champagne, plus wines that include a lush chenin blanc sourced from the prestigious Clarksburg region, a tropical tasting falanghina, and a violet-scented cabernet franc.
Shadybrook Estate Winery (Napa)

- Go for: an equestrian experience with your wine
When the founders of Shadybrook Estate Winery purchased the Rapp Ranch’s Bordeaux vineyard in 2016, they learned the property once bred award-winning racing and rodeo horses. That equestrian heritage continues today in a stable of 12 horses that take guests on trail rides past vineyards and old oaks.
After your dismount, the Ultimate Ranch Experience continues with aromatic Carneros pinot noir, a bright cabernet sauvignon with more acidity that reflects the Coombsville style, and a charcuterie board generous enough for a large group. You’re just 10 minutes from downtown Napa, but gazing out at the mountains you’ll feel a world away.
Hourglass (Calistoga)
- Go for: A musical selection as refined as the wines
After the 2020 Glass Fire destroyed their minimalist digs, Hourglass Winery owners Jeff Smith and wife Carolyn Duryea created an alfresco tasting salon amid sculptural burned-out trees called the Boneyard.
A stripped-down green Airstream is ringed by trees, a garden, and a grand dining table topped in malachite print tile. Smith, a rocker turned vintner, installed a modern turntable and vintage Klipsch speakers to play a diverse vinyl collection.
A textured wine like its Blueline Estate 36 vibes with the Clash’s London Calling , while the silkier Hourglass Estate cab might evoke the Marias’ Cinema . “The mystery of sound is much like the approach we take with our wines—an old-school/new-school effort to create dimension, richness, vibrancy,” says Smith.

Quirky Travel: Top 15 Unusual Wine Tastings And Experiences Around The World
Do you love wine but are tired of traditional wine tastings? Bored of dry crackers, stiff stools at wine bars and snobbish sommeliers? Spice up the way you experience wine with the world’s top unusual experiences centered around fermented grapes. Chose from unusual pairing classes, fun-filled festivals, active sport-themed wine experiences and hands-on opportunities to be a winemaker for a day — even getting to harvest and blend your own wines. After a picnic in the vines, you’ll get a signed certificate listing the wine you helped produce. These half-day tours run September through November; for more information, click here .

3) Drink Wine At An Ice Bar In The Frozen Tundra Of The Midwest (Kewaunee, Wisconsin)
If you prefer wine festivals at sub-zero temperatures, try touring the snow-covered Parallel 44 Vineyard & Winery. The winery shares the same latitude as the vineyards of Bordeaux and Tuscany, but the vines must withstand freezing temperatures. The husband and wife team have learned to create hardy grapes and you can visit the vineyard to taste their award-winning wines all year round. If you want to relate better to the frozen grapes, come to their annual winter wine fest, where you drink wine at an ice bar, listen to live music and sample vinos and gourmet foods in a heated tent. It’s the only festival of its kind in the Midwest. For more information, click here .

Visitors can sample 1 oz, 3 oz and 5 oz pours and can bring home their favorites, as all bottles are available for purchase. You’ll try three red and three white wines with six different flavors of chili (red, green, chipotle, habanero, crushed red pepper and jalapeno) served as sauces and salsas on baguette slices. These classes are often hosted at the local La Postra restaurant (www.laposta-de-mesilla.com) in a historic village; however, private tastings are also available. The Las Cruces location is the perfect place for such an experience because it houses the Chile Pepper Institute, the world’s only international organization dedicated to researching chili peppers. Come during Labor Day weekend to celebrate the green chili harvest at the Hatch Chile Festival , just 40 minutes away. For more information click here .
6) Art And Wine Pairing (Las Vegas, Nevada)
Add a visual dimension to the joy of tasting wine with the Bellagio’s “Art & Wine: A Perfect Pairing.” Bellagio’s top wine and art experts team up the second Wednesday of every month for an entertaining and sophisticated evening of art and wine. After simultaneously experiencing the Bellagio’s incredible selection of wine and art, you will leave with a new perspective on both. For more information, click here .
7) Grape Stomping Or Candy-Wine Pairing (Roselle, Illinois)
When most people think of Oktoberfest, beer is the beverage that comes to mind; however, Lynfred aims to change that. This two-day celebration at an Illinois vineyard, just outside of Chicago, began over two decades ago and continues to be unforgettable. The Annual Oktoberfest & Pig Roast celebration will be held October 4 & 5, 2014. You’ll spend two days joining German sing-a-longs and competing in grape spitting, grape stomping and cork tossing contests. After you work up an appetite savor roasted pig served with warm German potato salad, grilled bratwurst, chili and roasted sweet corn. For dessert, try a taffy apple, apple strudel or German chocolate cake, all paired beautifully with Lynfred wine. If you’re in town earlier in October, take advantage of the vineyard’s candy pairing class. Halloween will never be the same until you’ve tasted Snickers with a Vin de City Red, Twix with Syrah, Candy Corn and Ice Wine, and Strawberry and Grape Nerds and Framboise Port. Find more information about the festival and all upcoming events and tastings here .

Bring your business meeting (or bachelor party, or any small group for that matter) to Estancia La Jolla Resort in San Diego , California for a bonding experience you will never forget. Instead of a coffee break with stale scones or an ice cream social awkward enough to make you cringe at middle school memories, Estancia La Jolla can arrange a private class to loosen everyone up during break time. You could start with the informative Wine 101 or increase your employees’ perceptiveness with a Blind Tasting class. Another class will allow you to sample different foods and lit up different tastebuds on your tongue then challenge you to identify which activations happen with different wines. If you are willing to move beyond wine, get your employees’ creative juices flowing with a Mixology or Make Your Own Cocktail class. With activities like this, everyone will be counting the days until the next retreat. Click for more information about the hotel and wine bar. Guests can call 858.964.6516 to reserve a private class, tailored to your needs.

Unique Wine Tasting Experiences in the U.S. and Canada
Unique Wine Tasting Experiences in the United States and Canada
When hospitality and wine meet, magic can happen.
When making a pilgrimage to visit a winery, it isn’t always just about the wine.
The winemaking process, the educational component and the actual wine tasting is paramount, but it’s the uniqueness of the experience that makes a true memory, one that is often created by showcasing the vineyard’s individual definition of hospitality.
North America is home to many wine regions—everywhere from California to Oregon to Eastern Long Island to Ontario Wine Country and beyond—and each has their own identity. Many boutique, family-owned and operated wineries are learning to highlight what makes them special and thinking beyond a pedestrian wine tasting experience for their guests.
Macari Winery
Hoopes vineyard, cave springs.
It rings true, especially for private, small group experiences where wineries can use their own creativity and personal touch. When hospitality and wine meet, magic can happen. For those seeking unique, memorable, private tasting experiences, see below a list of distinctive experiences found throughout North America.

(631) 298-0100
Nestled in the North Fork of Long Island is the Bergen Road Bungalow experience at Macari Vineyard. This luxe hospitality experience takes place in the vineyard’s collection of private heated luxury tents for a party of six people or fewer. The tents were created in conjunction with local North Fork artisans including TENTRR , White Duck Outdoors , Terra Glamping , Jesse Elliott Design and White Flower Farmhouse .
RELATED: The Best Wineries to Visit This Year in Long Island
The goal was to design and stage tents that include special touches like vintage furnishings and a vinyl record player that also hooks up to a Bluetooth speaker, should guests wish to DJ their own gathering. The tent experience can be reserved for an entire afternoon that includes a wine tasting and lunch from local Chef Lauren Lombardi . The winery is also poised to roll out additional experiences within the tented spaces, including guest chef dinners and other culinary partnerships.
Bricoleur Vineyards
7394 Starr Rd, Windsor, CA 95492
(707) 857-5700
Nature lovers will be compelled to visit Bricoleur Vineyards located in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley – just south of Healdsburg, California. This 40-acre picturesque gathering- place with 21 acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards – is arguably best known for its popular Sip & Savor tasting – which includes six wines expertly paired with small, hearty dishes crafted by the estate chefs. But for those who crave a nature-focused experience, private groups are invited to fish for bass and bluegill in the larger of Bricoleur’s two ponds. All they need to do is reserve a tasting for their party and pack their own gear to enjoy an afternoon of fishing and wine tasting.

The lounge setting with vineyard views is accompanied with a complete culinary experience created by estate chef Alex Lovick. The menu is paired with a cheese and charcuterie platter and a selection of Inglenook’s Sauvignon Blanc, Blancaneaux, Edizione Pennino Zinfandel, Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, and Rubicon. (707) 395-7300
The female-led team comprised of three sisters Sharon Cohn, Rebecca Faust, and Cynthia Faust are at the helm of Breathless Winery in Healdsburg, CA. The winery’s mantra is about celebration, which is why they believe in the breathless moments of life.
While they have a variety of tasting and small group event options, the most unique offering is the sabrage experience for groups up to 10 people. Guests are brought together to learn the fine, historic art of sabering that has a connection to Napoleon and the French Revolution.
As the story goes, during Napoleon’s victorious battles, soldiers would ride on horseback through villages and towns with bottles of champagne to mark their victory. Without the ability to use their hands, they would strike the bottle with their sabers to pop the cork. Groups can learn the history of the experience along with the “how-to” led by a private instructor. After the instruction, they are left to enjoy the bottle along with optional charcuterie and cheese plate options and additional pairings.

Most recently, the winery hosted a lobster cooking demonstration led by a local chef who walked guests through the step-by-step process of properly cooking a lobster, along with industry trade tips. The meal was paired by Cave Spring’s traditional Method Blanc de Blanc Sparkling and a Chardonnay. Next up is a Celebration of Spring menu hosted by winemaker Gabe Demarco and chefs Jody and Kirstie of The Culinary Studio. The chefs will walk through the preparation and pairing of the spice roasted fish taco and a pork loin chop.
Frequently Asked Questions about Unique Wine Tasting Experiences in the United States and Canada
What makes a wine tasting experience unique.
What makes a wine tasting experience truly unique extends beyond simply the wine itself. While the quality and character of the wine are unquestionably significant, it’s the totality of the experience that leaves an indelible mark. The ambiance of the location, the knowledge and passion of the host, and the story behind the wines all contribute to the uniqueness of the experience. Imagine being nestled in a scenic vineyard, surrounded by rows of grapevines gently swaying in the breeze, with a majestic view of the landscape extending before you. The ambiance created by such an environment immediately heightens the experience, making the wine tasting extraordinary. Next, consider the host – their passion for winemaking, their wealth of knowledge about the nuances of their wines, the anecdotes they share about the vineyard’s history, and the intriguing details of the winemaking process. Their ability to connect with the guests and transform the tasting into a rich, informative, and engaging experience is a crucial element of what makes the occasion unique. The story behind each wine – the specificities of the terroir, the variety of grapes, the cultivation and harvesting process, and the meticulous crafting of the wine – all add layers of interest and depth to the tasting. The ability to appreciate the labor, tradition, and artistry that go into each bottle makes the experience singularly remarkable. A unique wine tasting experience often involves the discovery of new flavors and the chance to expand one’s palate. The opportunity to try different varietals or blends, learning to discern the subtle notes and complexities, and gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation of the wine all contribute to the uniqueness of the experience.
Do I need to have previous knowledge or experience with wine to enjoy a unique wine tasting?
Absolutely not! A unique wine tasting experience is designed to be enjoyed by everyone, whether you’re a seasoned oenophile or a complete novice. In fact, going into a wine tasting with an open mind and a readiness to learn can often make the experience even more enjoyable. Wine tasting is an opportunity to expand your knowledge and develop your palate. Tasting hosts are typically very knowledgeable and passionate about their wines, and they’re there to guide you through the process. They’ll often explain the characteristics of the wines you’re tasting, the history of the vineyard, the specifics of the terroir, and the details of the winemaking process. They’ll also guide you on how to properly taste wine and help you understand how to identify different notes and flavors. Part of what makes a wine tasting unique and enjoyable is the chance to try new wines that you might not have chosen yourself. You’ll often get the chance to sample a variety of wines, which can help you discover new favorites and broaden your understanding of different wine styles and varietals. So, regardless of your previous knowledge or experience with wine, a wine tasting can be a fun, informative, and unique experience. All that’s truly necessary is a willingness to try new things and an appreciation for good wine.
What are some popular locations or wine regions for unique wine tasting experiences?
Wine tasting experiences can be found in numerous locales worldwide, each offering unique insights into the culture, tradition, and flavor profiles native to their region. Some regions have gained popularity due to their distinct offerings and historical significance in winemaking. In Europe, the French regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy are renowned for their exquisite wines and picturesque vineyards. The Chianti region in Tuscany , Italy, known for its rolling hills and renowned Sangiovese grapes, offers memorable tastings of its iconic wines. Spain’s Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions bring you robust and nuanced red wines steeped in history. Outside of Europe, Napa Valley and Sonoma County in California, USA, are beloved for their world-class wineries and diverse range of varietals. The Finger Lakes region in New York State with its stunning wineries and views is also worth a visit. Also consider Okanagan Valley wineries in Canada . The Barossa Valley in South Australia is renowned for its bold Shiraz, while Marlborough on New Zealand’s South Island is recognized globally for its vibrant and zesty Sauvignon Blancs. In South America, Argentina’s Mendoza region and Chile’s Aconcagua Valley offer breathtaking landscapes coupled with flavorful tastings of Malbec and Carménère respectively. And let’s not forget South Africa’s Western Cape , with its stunning vistas and unique Pinotage wines.

Niagara is one of Canada and the USA’s most iconic regions. Of course, it’s best known as the home of North America’s largest waterfall – the mighty Niagara Falls . But that’s not all, as it’s also famous for being Canada’s top wine-producing region!
When I first moved to Canada, I didn’t realize how much of a wine-loving country it was. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that, not only do Canadians love drinking wine, they also produce some fantastic wine. And, the country’s biggest wine region is actually Niagara, which is right next door to where I live in Toronto!
As I live nearby, I’ve had lots of time to explore the region, get to know the local wineries and taste many of Niagara’s wines. So, by now, I know what to look for in a good Niagara wine tour. And, to help you choose the right tour, I’ve put together my top 7 Niagara wine tours to take when visiting the region.
In the list I’ve included a mix of group and private tours to suit different interests and budgets, as well as tours on both the Canadian and American side of Niagara (as excellent wine is produced on both sides).
So, read on for everything you need to know about Niagara’s best winery tours!

Niagara Winery FAQs
How many wineries are in niagara.
There are more than 50 wineries in Canada’s Niagara wine region. Around half of them are located in and around Niagara-on-the-Lake, on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. And there are also more than 20 wineries on the US side of the falls in Niagara County.
What time of year is best for Niagara wine tours?
The best time for Niagara wine tours is typically during the spring, summer, and early fall. The weather is most pleasant during these times, with long sunny days and warm temperatures. So this is the ideal time to explore the vineyards and the surrounding countryside.
However, later in the fall, from October to November, is also great time to visit Niagara, as the landscape lights up with some of the region’s most vibrant fall colours.
What type of wine is Niagara known for?
Niagara is best known for its production of Ice wine, a sweet dessert wine made from grapes harvested while frozen on the vine. The region also produces excellent cool-climate wine varieties such as Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc.
How does a wine tasting tour work?
During a Niagara wine tasting tour you will typically visit multiple wineries, where you’ll be guided through tastings of various wines by local wine consultants. They’ll teach you about the winemaking process, grape varietals, and flavour profiles while you sample a selection of wines.
Sometimes food, such as charcuterie or cheese pairings, will be included. And, certain tours may give you the option to stop at a local restaurant for lunch.
On Niagara wine tours, a local guide and transportation between wineries is also usually provided. And there will be an opportunity to purchase bottles of wine to take home.
How much time do you spend at each winery?
On most wine tours which include multiple stops, you’ll have around 45 minutes at each winery. However, this can sometimes be longer, if the stop is for a more comprehensive tasting, tour of the facilities, or even for lunch. And private tours can be customized to allow for longer or shorter stops, depending on your preferences.
What is ice wine?
Ice wine is a type of sweet dessert wine made from grapes that have been left to freeze naturally on the vine. This freezing process concentrates the sugars and flavours in the grapes, resulting in a rich, intensely sweet wine with a balanced acidity. It’s typically served chilled and is paired well with desserts.
Do you tip on wine tours?
Tipping on a wine tour is up to you, but is not usually expected. As most Niagara wine tours are booked and paid for in advance , you won’t actually have to pay anything on the day, unless you purchase bottles of wine or food during the tour.
For bottle purchases a tip is not expected. But for restaurant food eaten onsite, such as lunch, it’s customary to add a tip between 15% to 20% in Canada.
It can also be a nice gesture to provide a tip to your tour guide and driver. However, this is very much at your own discretion.
What do you wear to a wine tour in Niagara?
Most wineries in Niagara don’t have a specific dress code. I would recommend wearing comfortable clothes and shoes, as you will likely do a lot of standing throughout the day. And, if you’re going to be doing a bike wine tour , make sure you wear something you can easily cycle in.
What is the difference between Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake?
Niagara Falls is the small city and bustling tourist destination which is home to Niagara’s famous waterfall. Whereas Niagara-on-the-Lake is a small lakeside heritage community, often deemed the prettiest town in Ontario, known for its historic architecture, wineries, and theatres.
Niagara-on-the-Lake is only around 25-kilometres from Niagara Falls, and can be reached along the scenic Niagara Parkway. If you’ll be spending some time in the Niagara region, it’s absolutely worth visiting both Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake.
How old do you have to be to go on a Niagara wine tour?
You must be of legal drinking age to participate in a Niagara wine tour, which is 19 years old in Ontario.

DECANTER MAGAZINE 100/100 FOR CONTI COSTANTI BRUNELLO 2019
Tasted by: Michaela Morris
Drinking Window: 2027 - 2043
"I remember tasting Costanti’s 2019 Rosso di Montalcino in 2021 and thinking how Brunello-esque it was: the sturdy structure was almost uncharacteristic, yet it certainly boded well for the Brunello. Simply gloriously sculpted, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is indeed statuesque and stately. While it doesn’t give everything up all at once, it is gracious in its presentation. From chestnut forest and sweet earth, to anise and orange extract, the aromas are visceral, and boundless depths of wild red berries suffuse the palate. It vibrates with scintillating acidity and long, tactile tannins which stretch out leisurely. I bet that Rosso has hit its stride now – if you have some, it’s what you'll want to drink while waiting for this captivatingly beautiful Brunello. I can't help but imagine what next year’s Riserva release has in store."

Moscow Metro
Introduction of moscow subway system (metro).
Nowadays the Moscow Metro has 12 lines, light subway and monorail. All stations are unique and beautiful in their own way. Unfortunately, in order to visit them all, you need to spend many days. I invite guests to visit the ones that have the greatest cultural and historical interest from my point of view. Among them are the Revolution Square, Arbatskaya, Kievskaya (Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line № 3); Kievskaya, Belarusskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Komsomolskaya (the Ring line number 5). Let us dwell a bit on each.
Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line
Subway station "revolution square".
Most recently - in the year 2008-2010 – the Eastern lobby was renovated. Because of the terrorist attacks in the Moscow subway that took place several hours before the planned opening of the East lobby after renovation, the solemn part of the event was canceled.
Subway station Arbatskaya
Subway Arbatskaya is located on the same subway line as the station "Revolution Square." It was founded in 1953. It received the name in honor of the Arbat Street. It has one ground lobby (Western). Initially, the lobby was in a separate building, but the new building of the General Staff of the Ministry of Defense started, the lobby appeared to be in its atrium. The old exits were bricked up; a new entrance was built into the building of General Staff of the street Vozdvizhenka. There is a huge frame with a missing portrait in the ground lobby - until mid-1950 there was a portrait of Stalin. According to some reports, it survived, but closed with plaster.
The lobby was restored and partially reconstructed in 2007-2008.
The depth of the station is 41 meters.
Pylons are finished with red marble at the bottom, decorated with bouquets of flowers made from ceramics. The floor is laid out with gray granite. The walls lined with glazed ceramic tiles, white top and black bottom. The station hall is illuminated by massive bronze chandeliers in the form of rings.
Subway station Kievskaya
There are several subway stations "Kievskaya" in Moscow, located on different branches. This name is quite popular. It comes from the capital of Ukraine - one of Russia's nearest neighbors - the city of Kiev. The name is fully consistent with the idea of the subway station. The interior the station devoted to Soviet Ukraine and the reunification of Ukraine and Russia. The station is decorated with a large number of paintings .Twenty four murals depicting workers of Soviet Ukraine are placed on the arch above the pylons. The wall from the side of platform also contains frescos, mainly with images of fantastic plants. Pylons are decorated with light marble and additionally decorated with colorful ceramic cornice. The butt of the station has a large mosaic, depicting festivities to celebrate the 300 anniversary of the reunification of Ukraine and Russia.
Opened in 1953, this subway station for a long time was the final (1953-2003).
The station has one lobby, combined with the station ring line and located in the building of the Kievskaya railway station. The diameter of the central hall station is 9.5 m, the diameter of side one is 8.5 m. The depth of the station is 38 meters.
= Ring Line Subway =
It opened in 1954. The station received its name after the Kiev station, and locked the Ring line. During the construction of the station many projects were proposed, but the victory in the competition won the Kiev architects who made the construction of the station. It is the only station of the Ring Line which is not located in the Central Administrative District of Moscow.
The station has a pylon structure. Eighteen pylons are decorated with mosaic panels of glazes, decorated on the theme of Ukrainian history and friendship between the Ukrainian and Russian peoples, which started in the mid-17 century.
On the front wall of the central hall of the station a large panel with molding in the form of flags and a mosaic portrait of Lenin in the center are located. There are lines of the Soviet national anthem around the portrait, and under the portrait - the words of Lenin. One of the ways out of the station was designed by French architects modeled on the Paris Subway in 2006.
At one of the mosaics – “The Struggle for Soviet power in Ukraine "- modern passengers observe a mobile phone and PDA in the hand of one of the guerrillas, and on his knees - a laptop. In fact, he uses a field telephone, which was really a heavy thing (guerrillas holds it in two hands), and thing that people see a laptop is the lid of a box with a telephone. However, these phones have begun to produce only in the second half of the 20-ies of XX century. We must assume that the mosaic depicts a foreign field telephone transmitter.
Subway station Belorusskaya
The founded of the station was in 1952. It received the name after the Belarusian railway station nearby. The station has two ground-based lobbies. The Western one goes to Tverskaya Zastava. It is decorated with beautiful carvings. The Eastern one leads to Butyrskiy shaft and Forest Street. The Eastern lobby is known for its majolica panels.
The station Belorusskaya is located at a depth of 42.5 m below ground. The diameter of the central hall is 9.5 meters.
Pylons are faced with light marble. The walls lined with white ceramic tiles, the floor is covered with ceramic tiles, gray, white and red colors. Lamps placed on pylons, in the form of vases made of glass and marble. The theme of decoration is economy and culture of Belarus. Decorative pattern on the floor repeats the theme of traditional Belarusian embroidery. Decorations of the ceiling consist of stucco decorations and 12 mosaic panels depicting the life of the Belarusian people.
Subway station Novoslobodskaya
Built in 1952, Subway station Novoslobodskaya got its name from the eponymous street: the station is located at the very beginning of it.
Novoslobodskaya is pylon station of deep foundation (its depth is 40 m) with three arches.
Exit to the street is through the ground lobby with column portico, located on Novoslobodskaya Street lined with gray marble. Pylons of the underground station are faced with marble from the Urals. Thirty two spectacularly illuminated stained-glasses, placed inside the pylon and bordered by steel and gilt brass are splendid decoration of the station. A remarkable mosaic "World Peace" is located at the end of the central hall. The picture depicts a happy mother with a baby in her arms; it was the face of Stalin at the picture: the child gave a hand to him. But in times of Khrushchev the face of the former leader of USSR was removed from the panel. The walls are lined with bright marble; floor is covered with white and black granite slabs, placed in a checkerboard pattern.
Subway station Komsomolskaya
The station was built in 1952 and named in honor of the Komsomolskaya Square, which is situated nearby.
This subway station is the station of the deep bedding. Its depth is 37 meters. The station has column and three- arched design. Cast iron decoration is used in the construction, monolithic slab used as a tray for a collapsible finishing. The length of the boarding hall is 190 meters; width of it is 10 meters. There are 68 octagonal columns at station.
The main theme of the interior of the station is the fighting of the Russian people for their independence. The ceiling is decorated with eight station mosaic mural made from glazes and precious stones. Six of them represent the Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky, Alexander Suvorov and Mikhail Kutuzov, the Soviet soldiers and officers at the walls of the Reichstag.
Two other panels, depicting Stalin ("Victory Parade" and "Presentation of the Guards Banner"), were replaced after the dethronement of Stalin's personality cult in 1963. New panels depict Lenin's speech in front of the Red Guards and the Motherland on the background of the Kremlin's Spasskaya Tower.
The yellow ceiling is decorated with mosaic and moldings. The hall is illuminated by massive chandeliers hanging between the panels; platforms are illuminated with smaller chandeliers. The columns are decorated with marble capitals and trimmed with light marble, as well as the wall station. The floor is laid with pink granite. There is a bust of Lenin at the end of the hall. At the opposite end of the escalator is a large Florentine mosaic of the Order of Victory with red banners on the background. The ground lobby of the station is decorated with bas-reliefs.
In conclusion...
Each of the stations of the Moscow subway is attractive and interesting in its own way. Each has its own long and fascinating history and is beautifully decorated. The Moscow subway is a whole world, which can be talking about for hours. I suggest you short - no more than one hour and a half - and a fascinating journey through the world of the Moscow subway. The pleasure is guaranteed!

Looking for unique and quality wines on the North Fork, check out NF Craft Wines & Spirits. Opened this year in a totally renovated store in Greenport down the street from First and South restaurant. It's a small shop but well organized by region and types of wine. They have a nice selection of Italian, Sicilian and organic wines that you won't find in other wine shops. Also a selection of better wines from the North Fork. Make sure you get on the email list for special events. I went to the rose tasting and Italian tasting and enjoyed each event and the selection of wines. Prices are fair for the quality of wines selected. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Another bonus the owner hosts wine tours in Europe.
Italian wine tasting
Excellent Sicilian red
North Fork Craft is located across the street from the town's IGA. Easy parking with a lot or on the street. Summer is a bit tight but I've always been able to find a spot in front of the place. The store was once a hardcore liquor shop... the kind the clerk might be armed with a baseball bat. Recently a new owner came in and did a simple renovation. It is set up for the pleasure of the customer. Bottles are not jammed onto shelves without rhyme or reason. It's easy to shop. The wines are all interesting and top notch. They had a nice Greek red for a while but it sold out. The workers are knowledgable and very agreeable to any question. For a small town, Greenport has a lot of liquor stores...I guess that tells you the kind of town it is. Boating and boozing. I usually do not enter the town unless I need coffee from Aldo or wine from NFCW & S.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:
From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.
At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.
According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.
The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
Coffee Ring
The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.
Zodiac Metro
According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.
Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.
Paleontological finds
Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.
Know More about this tour
We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.
