Mega Cruise rolls on at the airport

PENN TWP — An overcast gray sky and the threat of rain couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of car enthusiasts at 21st annual Mega Cruise at the Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport on Saturday.

The gates opened for spectators at 2 p.m., but cars, motorcycles and trucks began rolling onto airport runways early in the morning, according to Kevin Shoemaker, vice president and fundraising chairman of the Penn Township Volunteer Fire Department, which stages the annual event.

“It’s more of a community event, and we do make some money, which goes to training, equipment repair and new equipment,” Shoemaker said. “This year, I’m expecting over 1,200 vehicles, and we expect to have 2,500 to 3,000 spectators.”

Penn Twp. Mega Cruise Returns

Classic cars will be waxed and ready to roll this Saturday at the annual Penn Township Mega Cruise.

The annual fundraiser for the Penn Township Volunteer Fire Department is the latest summertime event to return this year after cancelling in 2020 during the pandemic.

And it’s going to be a big anniversary celebration according to organizer Kent Shoemaker. “We’re celebrating two things; it’s our 20th anniversary for the Mega Cruise, and the 75th anniversary for the Penn Township Volunteer Fire Department,” Shoemaker said.

Anyone with a show vehicle—which includes classic cars, tractors, and motorcycles—can show up at noon. Patrons can arrive at 2 p.m. with a $2 admission.

Fireworks are also planned for that night before the event ends around 9:45 p.m.

Classic cars will be waxed and ready to roll tomorrow for the annual Penn Township Mega Cruise.

The 22nd annual fundraiser at the Butler County Airport for the Penn Township Volunteer Fire Department is the latest summertime event to welcome those looking for family fun.

Anyone with a show vehicle can get in for free at noon. Gates open to the general public at 1 p.m. with a $2 donation. This event will also include all day music, karaoke in the hanger, food, beverages, and raffles.

Fireworks are also planned for Saturday night before the event ends around 9:45 p.m.

Car Cruises: Big Butler Drivers!

As the Birthplace of the Jeep, Butler County’s automotive history is well documented. And while cars and trucks are no longer built here, the love we have for automobiles is still in overdrive!

Want evidence? That’s simple.

Last month thousands of Jeep enthusiasts flocked from around the country to Slippery Rock’s Cooper’s Lake for the 13th Annual Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival. While that event is certainly huge, it truly is the tip of the iceberg for Butler County fanatics of four-wheel fun. Maybe you had the chance to visit Westminster Presbyterian Church on July 15th to catch some classic station wagons that participated in the car show as part of the International Station Wagon Club’s annual conference which was held here. Earlier this month, a Butler County hotel hosted hundreds of members of the Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC) and Team Shelby for its 48th National Convention during the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix’s Historics events. And while we initially view the Vintage Grand Prix as a Pittsburgh event, Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport again hosted the organization’s “Passport to Elegance” gala. The airport, of course, was the site of Penn Township Volunteer Fire Department’s “Mega Cruise,” which featured more than 1,000 vehicles. Then there’s The Rodfathers of Butler, a local organization that holds multiple events to promote the good times, music, and vehicles from the 50's and 60's eras including Cruise-a-Palooza each June. The 2023 edition had 1,600 vehicles gathered on Main Street in Butler! We would be remiss if we didn’t mention the members of the Butler Old Stone House Region of Antique Automobile Club of America . This small group of auto enthusiasts maintain some of Butler County’s most historic vehicles and, many times display them (and their personal vehicles) at shows and parades throughout the region. It seems that once spring arrives you can find a car cruise every weekend in Butler County. That’s great news. Car cruises – and related events like the Big Butler Parts-a-Rama – bring lots of visitors to the area and often raise lots of money for charities. Additionally, they help drive the local economy as participants and viewers stop at local restaurants and eateries, and often stay overnight. We thank all those who take the time to organize events like these and we greatly appreciate their effort and dedication. MEGA CRUISE

This is the 16th annual MEGA CRUISE hosted by the Penn Twp. VFD. The event is held at the Butler County Airport. All show cars, trucks, tractors, bikes, and aircraft have free admittance. Walk-ins are asked for a $2 donation. Proceeds benefit the Penn Twp. VFD. The event includes great food, music throughout the day by DJ Phil Lenz, 50/50, Chinese Auction, karaoke, and fireworks. Knives Out (2019)

One of the movies with the highest concentration of stars is Knives Out, which is considered a great mystery thriller carried out by a select group of top-tier talents. Daniel Craig, Christopher Plummer, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Toni Collette, Michael Shannon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson and Lakeith Stanfield are just some of the figures who starred in the plot.

The story follows a famous and acclaimed detective, Benoit Blanc, who is in charge of the investigation into the death of a renowned crime novelist. Initially believed to be a suicide, as his search progresses, Blanc uncovers the lies of the writer's eccentric family, turning everyone into suspects.

Mamma Mia! (2008)

If we talk about musicals, Mamma Mia! takes all the accolades. The film was released in 2008 and is based on the successful stage musical of the same name, which features songs from the Swedish group ABBA. It has not only stood out for its story but also for having an all-star cast, including Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters, Dominic Cooper, Amanda Seyfried and Christine Baranski.

The inclusion of recognized and respected actors like Streep attracted a wide range of audiences, including those who were not necessarily fans of the musical genre. They brought a high level of acting quality to the film, elevating the standard of performances and receiving praise for their character portrayals. The tremendous success of the project contributed to the resurgence of interest in cinematic musicals in the 2000s.

Short Cuts (1993)

Short Cuts is a film directed by Robert Altman, released in 1993, which adapts various short stories by author Raymond Carver. The project features an impressive cast including names like Andie MacDowell, Bruce Davison, Julianne Moore, Matthew Modine, Anne Archer, Fred Ward, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Robert Downey Jr., Tim Robbins, Lily Tomlin, Tom Waits and many more.

The story was not only praised by critics on multiple occasions, earning it an Oscar nomination during the 1994 ceremony, but it also received positive reviews for the performances of its numerous star-studded cast. The plot follows a multitude of characters on the outskirts of Los Angeles whose lives, though initially separate, intersect at some point.

Traffic (2000)

Traffic is a film directed by Steven Soderbergh, released in the year 2000, addressing issues related to drug trafficking. The story follows a conservative judge appointed by the president to lead the growing U.S. war on drugs but discovers that his teenage daughter is a crack addict. The production not only was one of the most successful of that year but has left a mark on the history of cinema.

It managed to take home 73 awards, including 4 Oscars, along with 86 other nominations. One of the factors that influenced its success was the star-studded cast, featuring A-list stars such as Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Benicio Del Toro, Jacob Vargas, Dennis Quaid, Don Cheadle, James Brolin, Salma Hayek and Viola Davis.

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Of course, the list of stars in the last mega-important Marvel installment during 2019, Avengers: Endgame, is enormous. Not only did it become one of the highest-grossing movies in history, but it also brings together all the characters for a little over three hours. This time, the plot follows the group of surviving heroes who must do everything possible to undo the atrocity caused by Thanos.

Some of the most notable names in the film, as well as their performances, include Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Brie Larson, Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Josh Brolin, Chadwick Boseman, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston, Zoe Saldana, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Samuel L. Jackson and more.

The French Dispatch (2021)

The French Dispatch had its grand cinema premiere in 2021 and quickly established itself as one of the best productions created by Wes Anderson, one of the most acclaimed filmmakers in the industry. The comedy blends romance and drama in an original way, following the story of an American journalist struggling to write with integrity from Paris in the mid-20th century.

As expected, the cast was filled with major Hollywood figures. Frances McDormand, Jeffrey Wright, Owen Wilson, Timothée Chalamet, Tilda Swinton, Willem Dafoe, Benicio del Toro, Adrien Brody, Elizabeth Moss, Jason Schwartzman, Edward Norton, Griffin Dunne, Anjelica Huston, Christoph Waltz, Liev Schreiber and Saoirse Ronan are some of them.

The Thin Red Line (1998)

The Thin Red Line is a war drama directed by Terrence Malick, released in 1998, and based on the novel of the same name by James Jones. The presence of well-known and respected actors helped lend historical credibility to the production. The audience could more easily identify with the characters and their experiences due to their familiarity with the stars.

The plot is based on James Jones's 1962 autobiographical novel, focusing on the conflict in Guadalcanal during World War II. The film's success was significant, earning seven Oscar nominations during the 1999 ceremony. The project features an impressive cast, including Sean Penn, Adrien Brody, Jim Caviezel, Ben Chaplin, George Clooney, John Cusack, Woody Harrelson, Elias Koteas, Jared Leto, Nick Nolte, Bill Pullman, John C. Reilly and John Travolta.

The Counselor (2013)

The suspense and crime film directed by Ridley Scott and written by Cormac McCarthy, The Counselor, presented a dark and complex story with philosophical dialogues and morally ambiguous themes. With a high-voltage cast that included names like Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt, the production is one of the classics of the filmmaker.

Despite the project receiving not-so-favorable reviews from critics, who criticized the plot, dialogues, and execution, the film follows the story of a respected Southwest United States attorney who decides to participate for the first time in a drug trafficking operation on the border between Mexico and the United States. His main motive is to obtain fast money and be able to marry his girlfriend.

Ocean's Eleven (2001)

Steven Soderbergh was the one responsible for bringing the iconic Ocean's Eleven to life, which was released in 2001 and featured an ensemble cast of top-tier figures. The film was extensively promoted, emphasizing its star-studded cast. The collaboration of recognized actors was a key point in the marketing strategy, generating anticipation and excitement.

The story follows Danny Ocean and his ten accomplices as they plan to simultaneously rob the Bellagio, Mirage and MGM Grand casinos in Las Vegas. Love Actually is the British romantic comedy released in 2003 and directed by Richard Curtis, featuring one of the most extensive casts of big names. The film includes Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley, Alan Rickman and Bill Nighy among its ensemble.

The plot consists of several interwoven stories, and the participation of an all-star cast helped balance and bring these multiple narratives to life. Audiences enjoyed seeing their favorite actors in different story arcs. Over the years, the film has maintained its popularity as an iconic Christmas movie. The charisma and talent of the cast have contributed to making the film a recurrent choice during the holiday season.

Mars Attacks! (1996)

Mars Attacks! made its big-screen debut in 1996 and has since become one of the gems directed by Tim Burton. The film is known for its satirical style and dark humor, boasting an all-star cast including Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Sarah Jessica Parker, Natalie Portman, Martin Short, Michael J. When we talk about iconic productions from the '90s, Pulp Fiction undoubtedly enters the list as one of Quentin Tarantino's many gems. The film has become a classic of modern cinema, and its story portrays the lives of two mobsters, a boxer, a gangster's wife, and a couple of bandits intertwined in four tales of violence and redemption.

Having won an Oscar, the film is IMDb's top-rated at number 8. One of the main factors behind its success is the extensive ensemble of mega-stars who bring the plot to life, including John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Christopher Walken, Amanda Plummer, Maria de Medeiros, Ving Rhames, Rosanna Arquette, Eric Stoltz and the filmmaker himself.

The Expendables (2010)

The fact that The Expendables' story was led by a star-studded cast was a key element for its success, connecting with action movie fans and creating a lasting impact on the franchise. Sylvester Stallone was not only one of its iconic protagonists but also took on the role of director.

Released in 2010, the film follows a CIA agent who hires a team of mercenaries to eliminate a Latin dictator and a rogue agent from the agency. The main group is comprised of Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin, Eric Roberts, Terry Crews, Charisma Carpenter, Mickey Rourke, Randy Couture, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Inception (2010)

Inception is not only one of Christopher Nolan's masterpieces, but the director chose to assemble an extensive ensemble of stars to bring the science fiction film to life, which ended up winning four Oscars. Some of the prominent figures that make up the cast include Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Elliot Page, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger, Ken Watanabe and Michael Caine.

The story follows a thief (played by DiCaprio) who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology and is tasked with implanting an idea in the mind of a high-profile business executive. Its gripping narrative is recognized for being quite complex and innovative, as the concept of exploring dreams within dreams and the manipulation of time captivated the audience.

Magnolia (1999)

Paul Thomas Anderson's work, Magnolia, is one of the most successful films of 1999, having been nominated for 3 Oscars. The drama is an epic mosaic of interrelated characters searching for love, forgiveness, and meaning in the San Fernando Valley. The project features an all-star cast, including names like William H. Macy, John C. Reilly and Jason Robards.

The talent of acclaimed actors like Tom Cruise and Julianne Moore, along with the masterful performance of Philip Seymour Hoffman, was a crucial element in the impact of the film. Over time, the title has become a classic in the dramatic genre and productions that will make you cry uncontrollably.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way.
