Live reviews

One of the world's most prolific songwriters, Sia Furler's songs are cropping up in charts worldwide on the regular. Having worked with Britney Spears, Rihanna and Beyoncé (to name but a few) to acclaim and success, Sia also strikes out on her own. Delivering devastating pop paeans that discuss loss, depression, death, addiction, sex, drugs and, on occasion, happy things, Sia's not a bespandexed pop mannequin; she's a bona fide artist, reeling off the most incisive pop you'll ever hear.

Chances are, if you knew of Sia's solo efforts prior to this year, you'll be familiar with “Breathe Me”, a tender earthquake of a song, replete with her trademark vocal crackles, clips and croaks. However, bursting forth proper, in 2014 we've seen an abundance of top-notch belters; the overwhelming hysteria of “Chandelier”, “Eye Of The Needle” and “Big Girls Cry” is enough to make anyone combust.

Her strategy in recent months, in terms of performing live, has been unusual – reticent, even. For example, on the Ellen Show, she merely faced the back of the set as the dancer from the “Chandelier” video, Maddie Ziegler, pranced as a centrepiece. When she does allow the spotlight to be shone on her, the standout element is her voice. Her singular talent is extraordinary, oozing the kind of heartstring-yanking emotion you get when watching Titanic, reading The Fault In Our Stars... it's a combination of blazing stomach-butterflies, the silent, catastrophic crumble of our universe. Her voice escapes words, frequently. Her pitch is of course flawless; and as a spectacle before your eyes, she's majestic. Make sure to bring tissues. Sia's performances will change your life.

Absolutely amazing! I was skeptical, for some reason, after reading a couple of mediocre reviews from the Nostalgia tour, but my skepticism eased as soon as the curtains opened and I heard Sia sing live! What an amazing voice! Actually, just watching her stand on stage was enough for me! Although she's not a "performer", she definitely put on a show. Her stage presence is entrancing! I could literally watch her stand in a corner, tap her heel to the beat while grasping the mic and belting that amazing voice all day. Her dancers, of course, were phenomenal! I mean, really! The show moved fast - from song to song - almost like acts in a play, but it was quite enjoyable. She opened with Alive, which was great for getting the energy throughout the packed arena! Big Girls Cry, Bird Set Free, Cheap Thrills and Breathe Me were my performances! She sang every song I wanted to hear so I didn't leave disappointed!

There was no interaction between the artist and the crowd during the show - which I expected from the reviews I read. But after the final bows and as everyone was leaving, Sia spoke! She told everyone to stay seated while she thanked the crowd. Made us laugh and performed an encore! It was THE BEST THING EVER! So much fun! Great energy. Everyone was there for a great time. This was literally the best concert I've attended! So glad to have caught Sia on tour!

Btw: Miguel was an opening act. He was awful! He's not a performer. Reminded me a lot of a high school boy band wannabe! He tried to engage the crowd but I don't think too many people cared to see him. His band was good though!

Sia is by no means a performer known for her strict adherence to convention, but even by her own standards, she’s been acting strangely lately, in the run-up to the release of her sixth studio album, 1000 Forms of Fear. Firstly, she told The Sunday Times that she didn’t want to be famous, apparently not realising that giving interviews to British national newspapers probably isn’t an ideal part of that strategy. More sensibly, she stayed out of the limelight during a performance on primetime U.S. television recently, although she did let Lena Dunham perform an interpretive dance to her track instead - a bizarre move by anybody’s standards. Quite what will be in store for audiences when she does hit the road in support of 1000 Forms of Fear remains to be seen, especially if she’s set on keeping her face hidden - a Kanye West-style mask, perhaps? We can probably expect an array of eye-catching costumes, and if past form is anything to go by, the setlist will lean heavily on her latest record - she’s not one to do things by the book on that front, either. She did away with the piano on her last tour, and given her current direction, that’s likely to be the case this time, too; beyond that, though, it probably isn’t sensible to jump to too many conclusions about one of the world’s most unpredictable pop acts.

Firstly, I love Sia as the most amazing singer/songwriter and being able to attend her live concert was something I was greatly looking forward to.

I wasn't expecting to see her face and I was prepared for that. What I wasn't prepared for was her standing off to the side of the stage in darkness and the audience watching dancers for the entire concert whilst Sia sang to her own music track.

Throughout the concert I wasn't even certain that it actually was Sia there on stage and was she singing live at all or were we just listening to her CD playing while someone was miming.

The lighting was low and didn't focus on her and she remained in the dark for the whole concert. The tv's placed around the stadium did not sinc to what Sia was singing.

To sum it up, I still adore her and will buy her music. She just should not tour if she cannot give what some concert goers want when they pay big bucks to see an artist.

I have loved Sia's voice and her music for several years now. The venue, Phillips Arena, was phenomenal for the concert. That's why we paid $205 to see the her (and Miguel). That said, I found it disrespectful of her to stand up in a corner and sing (honestly, it looked like lip-synching sometimes). Who knows, it might have been be someone else performing on her behalf. I get it on TV presentations... and certainly was hoping that wasn't the case in the concert but sadly it was.

Miguel... not giving any credit to the band behind the screen... rude!

I will not see Sia or Miguel live again... very disappointed.

Thanks for asking.

I should have just stayed home and watch the video. It was difficult to tell if she was even singing. She sounded exactly like her recordings. Even Shazam could recognize the songs. The performers on stage were trying to sequence and dance with the simultaneously played video, shown on the screens. Many times they were out of sync Sia was trying to sing at the same sequence as the video, but many times was out of sync. The audience doesn't know whether to look at the screen or look at the stage it's like two different shows, but the screen was far more entertaining. Like I said I should have stayed home and watch the video.

Electrifying show. Sia's vocal abilities are amazing, She sings her soul out. The dancers were outstanding too, and the choreography was wild and creative. loved it. The Idea of making the video clips of her songs live on stage is nice, but very much limited. We all saw those clips over and over, and we came to see something else. I missed seeing her, Sia, her face when she sings, She was at the back of the stage for the whole show, with her face covered. Wanted her to make some connection with the crowd, and it didn't happen. With all that we had an amazing time.

First, I'd like to preface my review by saying that Sia is my absolute favourite artist! That would be the short and simple review, but that wouldn’t even begin to describe the experience that you get at one of her shows. Apart from the vocal performance of Sia being amazing, there is much more to her show. It was very unique concert! With a lot of Sia magic and mystery. Amazing dancers. Great Stephanie Mincone performance. Amazing vocal performance!! Thank you Sia!!

Mariyushka’s profile image

Truly one of the best performances I've seen. Sia's voice was on top shape and, even though she was on the back of the stage and covered, she was a powerful presence.

The performances by the dancers on every song were expertly choreographed and in perfect sync with the videos projected, so the illusion of having Paul Dano, Kristen Wiig, and Tig Notaro on stage with her was very good.

Megadeth’s upcoming tour lineup is an odd yet interesting mix.

DERBY, ENGLAND - AUGUST 13: Dave Mustaine of Megadeth performs at Bloodstock Open Air Festival 2023 ... [+] at Catton Hall on August 13, 2023 in Derby, England. (Photo by Katja Ogrin/Redferns)

It wasn’t long ago when Megadeth had one of the hottest metal tours on the block which was fittingly coined ‘The Metal Tour Of The Year.’ The 2021 and 2022 co-headlining tour consisted of Megadeth and modern heavyweights Lamb of God with opening acts Trivium, Hatebreed, and later In Flames. Nearly every band on the bill offered something unique yet sonically similar enough to make it an air tight package. Not to mention, the tour sold exceptionally well with averaging 7,000 tickets sold across 24 dates from its first leg. To say it was a smashing success for Megadeth would be an understatement, and with their recent Grammy nomination for their well received 2022 LP The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead , the band was experiencing quite a moment to say the least.

However, despite the recent wins for Megadeth guitarist Kiko Loureiro exiting the band was a pretty big blow to the fans, as he’s made significant contributions to Megadeth since joining in 2015. In fact, in the past Megadeth founder Dave Mustaine had been fairly open about his admiration for Loureiro and he’s gone as far as saying , “Megadeth has had guys like Jeff [Young] and Marty [Friedman], but Kiko is the best we’ve ever had.”

Now with the band’s new guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari, who was recommended by Loureiro prior to exiting the band, Megadeth aren’t quite in the same position they were in a couple years ago, though at no fault of Mäntysaari who is in fact filling the shoes of lead guitarist incredibly well, according to Mustaine.

With all that being said, the band’s recent headlining tour announcement comes as a surprise to many fans, particularly with the supporting lineup Megadeth has in place. Nu metal giants Mudvayne and metalcore pioneers All That Remains are slated to support Megadeth on their upcoming late summer North American, which is titled the Destroy All Enemies tour. Maybe the tour’s title is an attempt at the band poking fun at themselves because it doesn’t appear they’ll be making any new friends with a tour lineup that’s such a stark contrast from their recent North American tours.

After one look at the comments section on Megadeth’s instagram post for the tour announcement, it’s clear that the most upvoted comments are from fans being harshly critical or puzzled by Megadeth’s decision to have Mudvayne and All That Remains as support, and that’s putting it lightly. No disrespect to either Mudvayne or All The Remains as both bands have made significant contributions to early 2000s metal and are great on their own merits, but the three bands together just seems at odds with Megadeth status as a legacy band. If they’d added another opener that was more sonically like minded and a newer act like Havok, Enforced, or even Power Trip the bill would possibly seem a little less jarring to fans. Better yet, a co-headlining tour with Pantera, whom are currently headlining arenas across the states, would do wonders for both bands especially given the demand for the recent Pantera reunion.

Google Issues Critical Chrome Update For All Windows Users

New ios 18 ai security move changes the game for all iphone users, world war i tactics make a comeback as a ukrainian gunner in the back of a propeller plane shoots down a russian drone.

Regardless, both Mudvayne and All That Remains can draw on their own, but it’ll be interesting to see if Megadeth fans are the primary ticket buyers for this tour or if there’s a healthy mix from each of the acts’ core fanbases. Or better yet, maybe there’s a more shared appreciation for all acts than the comments suggest. It’s entirely possible, but tickets sales and the crowd response at the shows will no doubt be the deciding factors.

Jointly with the Grand Rapids Historical Society, the SIA hosts a public speaker event with historic preservationists Rebecca Smith-Hoffman and Jennifer Metz of Past Perfect, Inc. on the history and impact of preservation in Grand Rapids. Both have over 40 years of experience in the struggle to document and preserve industrial and domestic sites in the area. This event is free and open to the public at the Ryerson Auditorium at the historic Main Branch of the Grand Rapids Public Library.

Thursday, June 8

(6:00 – 6:30 PM) New Members Opening Reception.

(6:30 – 9:00 PM) The opening reception at the conference hotel will include hors d’oeuvres, cash bar, and an orientation on the history of Grand Rapids and West Michigan.

Friday, June 9 Tours

F1 – Traditional Furniture, Water, and Sky (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM) Though much of Grand Rapids’ furniture industry is tied to specialized and office furnishings, Kindel Furniture continues to produce pieces that combine traditional designs and methods with modern techniques. Among the oldest companies, Kindel moved to the city in 1912 and while no longer in its initial structure, has continued to expand its product offerings. The site offers a window into a range of traditional practices in carving, veneering, and design that is unlike any other company. The tour then moves to the Grand Rapids Water Resources facility that manages a regional system extending from Lake Michigan inland. The system pioneered the use of fluoridated water in 1945 and with other efforts altered the city’s relationship to the Grand River and the lake in the ensuing decades. The plant is a window into the changes in clean water processes. Next is a trip to Saugatuck on the Lake Michigan coast to view a unique part of Cold War history, the Saugatuck Gap Filler Radar Annex. Put into operation on the top of Mt. Baldhead dune in 1958 the system warned against aircraft coming over the Arctic it would operate until 1968. Recently added to the National Register of Historic Places, the site is a window into the era’s technology and give spectacular views of the harbors of Saugatuck and Douglas, important nineteenth century lumber towns. The group ends at the Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven where a host of watercraft from sailing ships to U.S. Lifesaving Service and Coast Guard rescue craft are maintained. It is a window into the efforts to maintain harbors and manage the complex Great Lakes maritime system. Please note that the climb up Mt. Baldhead is on 300 wooden steps to the top. There is a new display on the site at the base of the dune in the 1904 built Pump House.

F2 – Belts, Dams, and Boats (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM) Belt drive machinery remained critical to the furniture industry’s operation and suppliers set up shop in Grand Rapids. Clipper Belt Lacer Company would emerge in 1910 as a leading supplier of belt lacing equipment and is now part of the Flexco company in Walker. Flexco continues to produce items on vintage equipment at its new facility along with belting and conveyor systems used in Amazon and other warehousing operations. Along with its testing and design operations, it is an impressive combination of old and new. The tour then takes a ride north to Consumers Energy’s flagship hydroelectric facility, Hardy Dam on the Muskegon River near Newaygo. Put into operation in 1931, the earth embankment dam produces 30,000 kilowatts from its large reservoir. The complex was updated in 2009 and operates as a key part of the company’s move to non-fossil fuel production sites. An opportunity to also view the older Croton Dam from 1907 is a part of the tour at this point. Next the tour moves on to Muskegon, a former lumber port that evolved into an industrial center by the twentieth century. The historic center of the city that escaped urban renewal and the active waterfront demonstrates the scale of the Muskegon River’s exit point on Lake Michigan. Finally, the tour ends at the Milwaukee Clipper a 1904 built passenger vessel modernized in 1940 into an Art Deco masterpiece. Featuring a quadruple-expansion steam engine, the ship is a blend of old and new with specially built features still intact along with its original equipment. The site also includes the remains of the Grand Trunk Western Railroad’s car ferry slip with remaining headworks to facilitate transfer of railcars. This tour entails two extended travel times of 55 minutes each .

F3 – Preservation, Restoration, and Demonstration (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM) Kalamazoo’s Air Zoo is not only a museum for aircraft but also a Smithsonian affiliated museum that works extensively in historic aircraft restoration. Currently, two World War II aircraft recovered from the bottom of Lake Michigan are undergoing this process. The tour will interact with the Restoration Team and see their efforts up close as this painstaking work takes place.

Next, the group visits the Calhoun County Historic Bridge Park, a unique resource that preserves six of Michigan’s historic bridges in a county park located on the Kalamazoo River near Battle Creek. In addition to a stone railroad bridge original to the site, the park showcases five restored metal truss bridges of different designs from various counties in the state. The tour of the bridges will include discussion of the restoration processes by Vern Mesler, whose crew was responsible for carrying out the repair, restoration, and erection of the bridges. Next, hot riveting was a key restoration process for the work done to preserve Michigan’s historic truss bridges for the Calhoun County Historic Bridge Park, where efforts were made to use historically accurate techniques as much as possible. The restoration work at the Park has led to ongoing training in riveting at Lansing Community College and to the specification of riveting by MDOT for rehabilitation of some of Michigan’s highway bridges currently in use. Some 300 musicians, from Diplo to Nile Rodgers, lobby Congress for ticketing reform

From left, Nile Rodgers, Chappell Roan and Diplo are among the more than 280 musicians who signed a letter to senators in support of concert ticketing reforms.

What do Billie Eilish, Dave Matthews and Diplo have in common?

As of Thursday, they are among the more than 280 popular musicians who have signed a letter urging lawmakers to help reform the concert ticketing system.

Other prominent signatories include Becky G, Duran Duran, Fall Out Boy, Finneas, Graham Nash, Green Day, Nile Rodgers, ODESZA, Chappell Roan, Cyndi Lauper, Indigo Girls, Jason Mraz, Sia, Sylvan Esso and Lorde.

"We are joining together to say that the current system is broken: predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate ticket prices and deprive fans of the chance to see their favorite artists at a fair price," the letter reads.

Live Nation and Ticketmaster tell Biden they're going to show fees upfront

Live Nation and Ticketmaster tell Biden they're going to show fees upfront

It goes on to say that the use of illegal bots, speculative ticket listings and deceitful advertising causes "real harm," including severing the relationship between artists and fans — "which forms the backbone of the entire music industry" — and allowing resellers to profit more than the artists themselves.

The artists are asking the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation to help fix those problems by supporting the Fans First Act , which was introduced by a bipartisan group of senators last December. It was referred to and remains before the committee, which would need to approve it to bring it to a floor vote.

"We, as artists, as music lovers, and as concert attendees ourselves, urge you to support the Fans First Act to combat predatory resellers' deceptive ticketing practices and the secondary platforms, which also profit from these practices," the letter continues. "Predatory resellers should not be more profitable than the people dedicating their lives to their art."

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., who along with Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, is a co-sponsor of the bill, said in a statement Thursday that she will "keep working to pass this legislation."

"Buying a ticket to see your favorite artist in concert is like going through a gauntlet for too many Americans," Klobuchar said. "This is hurting music fans and it's hurting artists. That's why our bipartisan legislation to improve the ticketing experience has growing support, including hundreds of major musicians."

The Fans First Act focuses on three priorities : ticket sales transparency, consumer protection and stopping bad actors.

Senators are calling on the Justice Department to look into Ticketmaster's practices

It would require live event ticket sellers and resellers to disclose more information about ticket costs and seat location, refund customers the full ticket price when events are canceled and create a reporting website for fans to file complaints.

"Even better, it backs all these regulations up with clear penalties and enforcement," the letter says.

The letter was organized by Fix the Tix , a coalition of over two dozen live event industry organizations led by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA).

Since its formation in the fall of 2023, it has called on Congress to enact legislation that would protect fans from price gouging, ban fake tickets and ticket-buying bots, end fraudulent resale practices and ensure price transparency, among other reforms.

So how did this letter come together, and why now?

NIVA Executive Director Stephen Parker told NPR over email that industry groups representing artists — such as the Recording Academy and Music Managers Forum - U.S. — are a "critical part" of Fix the Tix's efforts.

"Artists engaged in those organizations heard about our efforts and volunteered to lend their voice to getting comprehensive ticketing reform passed," he said. "The letter is being sent now because time is running out in this Congress for the Senate and House to meaningfully address the predatory resale platforms and ticket brokers that plague fans and artists."

Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation Entertainment, have come under increased scrutiny from artists and fans in recent years who accuse the companies of maintaining a monopoly over the industry ever since their controversial 2010 merger. Live Nation has repeatedly denied the allegations.

The Senate's Ticketmaster hearing featured plenty of Taylor Swift puns and protesters

The Senate's Ticketmaster hearing featured plenty of Taylor Swift puns and protesters

In particular, Ticketmaster's chaotic sale of Taylor Swift Eras Tour tickets in November 2022 left scores of fans empty-handed and outraged. Several state attorneys general launched investigations, a group of Swifties sued the companies for fraud and the Senate grilled Live Nation executives at a January 2023 hearing.

Lawmakers have since introduced several aptly-named bills to reform various aspects of the industry, like the TICKET Act and the BOSS and SWIFT Act .

For its part, Live Nation expressed support for the Fans First Act when it was first introduced in the Senate in December.

"We believe it's critical Congress acts to protect fans and artists from predatory resale practices, and have long supported a federal all-in pricing mandate, banning speculative ticketing and deceptive websites, as well as other measures," it said in a statement shared with NPR.

The Justice Department is said to be ramping up its antitrust probe into Live Nation, with unnamed sources telling the Wall Street Journal and Axios in recent weeks that the agency could file a lawsuit as soon as May.

‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour' Writes Her Name As No. 7 In Deadline's 2023 Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament

Deadline's Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there's nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie's longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline's Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament   is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour AMC Entertainment

After Covid shut down AMC and the rest of the globe’s multiplexes and the actors strike ratcheted down the box office, you could say that the No. 1 exhibitor was taking its fate into its own hands with Taylor Swift: The Era’s Tour . However, it has Scott Swift, Taylor Swift’s father, to thank. He reportedly made the call to AMC CEO Adam Aron to sidestep studios and gain more cash in taking his daughter’s movie from her $1 billion-plus-selling, sold-out concert tour directly to AMC. Why have a studio walk away with a ton of cash and spend tens of millions in marketing when Swift with a then-near-400 million social media followers is the best form of advertisement? She tweeted a few times to promote the movie, and showed up at her boyfriend Travis Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs games to drum up her $15M Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film as a must-see. The movie also received a SAG-AFTRA waiver, which allowed the pop star to show up at her own Los Angeles world premiere and do publicity. The result: $100M in global advance ticket sales. AMC, to avoid antitrust issues, hired Gotham-based distributor Variance Films to book cinemas across the nation, and Trafalgar to handle the overseas release. Much to the chagrin of the studios, who had their thing to say about Aron’s entry into the distribution business, they all started moving their movies away (i.e., Universal’s The Exorcist reboot, Lionsgate’s Ordinary Angels ) from Eras Tour and its arrival on the calendar October 13. Swift cleverly tailored her marketing to fans, releasing the movie on a date that reps her lucky number, with tickets priced at $13.13 for children and seniors. Initially she wasn’t going to preview the movie, looking to open hard on 10/13. At the last minute, during the week of release, Swift changed her mind and opted for last-minute Thursday previews (they only yielded $2.8M).

THE BOX SCORE

The bottom line.

Projections were wild for Eras Tour as most Swifties don’t necessarily go to the movies. But at $123M worldwide and $93.2M, the pic repped the biggest opening ever for a concert film, and at the domestic box office it was the second-biggest opening for the month of October after The Joker ($96.2M). AMC certainly reaped the spoils as most moviegoers thought the only place to see Eras Tour was in an AMC theater; the circuit commanded 41% of the gross during the Sam Wrench-directed title’s opening weekend (typically the chain averages 22%-25% of a tentpole’s opening weekend on average). Still, between Eras Tour and Five Nights at Freddy’s, there was a lot of box office cash during a dry period with the ongoing actors strike. Terms of AMC’s deals were reportedly 43% of the gross staying with movie theaters, and 57% shared between the Swifts and AMC as distributor with Variance and Trafalgar receiving a distribution fee. Global marketing is figured at $55M. The Swifts sold the movie to Disney+ for a reported $75M, tossing aside offers from Netflix and Universal, as shown above; the concert pic was the most-viewed ever on the service for the genre with 4.6M views (the digital release hit on Swift’s birthday, December 13). In each home window, Swift offered more and more to fans with the digital release, via Universal, including three bonus songs not seen in the theatrical cut (“Wildest Dreams,” “The Archer” and “Long Live”), while the Disney+ version counted five new songs. The success of the concert movies led AMC to land Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, that songstress’ concert movie; it gave it a release the first weekend in December, and it grossed just $45M worldwide. No bother, but Beyoncé was never expected to have the same impact as Swift. Wall Street sources snarked that AMC wasn’t only making 4% of the box office from its concert films, though Aron has balked at that number. He told Deadline at CinemaCon: “We look at the concert films as the sum of our distribution and exhibition profits combined; they were extremely profitable.” It’s definitely a new side business for AMC, with the world’s No. 1 theater chain tapping Fandango vet Stephanie Terifay  as VP Distribution recently to engage the music industry. Aron also told us, “We’re talking to other world-class [performing] artists about having more concert films.”
