Couple Disinvites Groom’s Dad and Stepmom to Wedding After They Insist on Mother-Son Dance: 'Their Own Fault'

The groom said in a recent Reddit post that he did not view his stepmother as a parental figure and did not want to have a mother-son dance

A groom did not appreciate his pushy father and stepmother – so he rescinded their wedding invitation.

In a post on Reddit’s popular "Am I The A------" forum, a user explained that he and his fiancée mutually uninvited his father and stepmother to their wedding after they insisted on having a mother-son dance despite the marrying couple’s disinterest.

The groom, 26, said they opted out of a few traditions, including the father of the bride walking the bride down the aisle as well as any father-daughter or mother-son dances during the reception.

Instead, they plan on walking down the aisle as a couple and only doing their first dance.

The problem came when the groom’s stepmother, who married his father when he was six and became his primary caregiver a few years later when his mother died, asked for an exception be made, regardless of the couple's preferences.

The groom told his stepmother that even if the dance happened, he wouldn’t view it as a traditional mother-son dance, as he’d see it as a stepmother–stepson dance. She expressed her hurt at the comment and continued to bring up the topic, which made him upset.

The groom’s father eventually got involved and tried to encourage the groom to make an exception.

The groom told his father and stepmother to stop bringing up the topic, but they continued to do so. As a result, he and the bride, 25, agreed that they would rescind their invitation if the topic was brought up again.

Later, when they brought up the dance again, the groom told them they were no longer invited to the wedding because they had pushed their boundaries too far. The groom added that the pair were not funding the wedding, and had no authority over what occurs and what doesn't.

The disgruntled father and stepmother told the groom that he was "making a big mistake and was turning into someone they didn't like before their very eyes."

"My stepmother asked me if I'd really prefer for them not to be there over a simple dance for the two of us where she can have one moment of feeling like she gets the recognition as more than just being my stepmother," the poster wrote. "I told her I would prefer that and it was their own fault for refusing to stop asking."

Several people in the comments have weighed in and assured the groom that he was not in the wrong for wanting his father and stepmother to respect their wishes. "They pushed the boundary and are dealing [with] the consequences. They should have accepted the first no and let it go. They have no one to blame except themselves," wrote one person.

Another added: "What a sad situation. I understand it’s your wedding and ultimately your choice. They obviously were pushing you to do something you didn’t want and you got sick of it. I do feel sorry for your step mum, your dad, your siblings and you though."

A different commenter weighed in and noted that they shared a dance with their stepfather at their own wedding and felt uncomfortable. "I danced with my stepdad who basically raised me since I was 3. We had our ups and downs but I felt guilty not dancing with him [because] my husband danced with his mom. It was awkward and I hated every minute of it," they shared.

A third person insisted that the bride and groom should always have the final say in what happens at their wedding, writing, "You don’t have to explain why you don’t want it, it’s your wedding and you get to have it the way you choose. They were being incredibly rude and inconsiderate, and I don’t need to know anything else about your stepmother to know what kind of person she is."

Travel Contest Entry by Jan Eide

From my Bucketlist trip to photograph Italy. I had the opportunity to travel in february, to escape the masses. I don`t think this long exposure photo from the Accademia bridge would be possible to shoot in summer. This bridge, and Venice is then totally packed with tourists. Even in february there was very crowded in the narrow streets. I can`t imagine how it must be to live there in the summer season when you have to fight your way through hard packed crowds to get to the groceries.. Anyway this was shot with Sony A7r, 28mm and 20 seconds to erase the traffick in the canal. I have photos with the traffick too, and some may like that better than this more calm long exposure photo.

MAKING BUCKET LIST TRAVEL DREAMS A REALITY

Sydney Opera House in Sydney Australia

How to Enter and Win Travel Contests

I’ve “won” six travel contests/sweepstakes. One allowed my husband and I to fly to Australia for 10 days, all on someone else’s dime. (Thank you yet again Australian Tourism , Delta Airlines , and most of all, Virgin Australia .) Two were the “lottery” for regular priced tickets at big sporting events (Final Four and Masters). One was a reduced price vacation to an all-inclusive in Cancun. One was frequent flyer points. The other was a runner-up t-shirt. Actually two t-shirts, in different sizes, presumably so that one would fit.

Six wins in hundreds may not sound worth it, but you can’t win if you don’t play. And a few tips will help you enter the right contests and increase your odds to win travel contests! So I’ll tell you what I’ve learned about avoiding scams, finding and picking the right contests for you, and maximizing your time with a cleaner inbox.

Reef Sleep for snorkeling and overnight on the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland Australia

Top Travel Contest Tip- Avoiding the Scams

If you read all the way through this and remember nothing else from this blog, remember these two things: A LEGITIMATE CONTEST WILL NOT ASK FOR TOO MUCH INFORMATION AND IT WILL HAVE OFFICIAL RULES. Standard travel contests will need, at minimum, your email address. Most will ask you for your name, your country of origin (if open to more than one country) and postal code. Later they will use this to verify who you are and that you in turn aren’t hustling them. The vast majority of contests will not ask you for your phone number, full mailing address, birth date, etc. Some contests may step you to a section where you might fill that out, but it’s likely for their own marketing purposes. You should be able to skip.

No legitimate contests will ask you for your payment information or social security up front .  You don’t want to enter or “win” travel contests that are pushing that from the entry. Scam! If you win, and the prize is big enough, you  will eventually have to provide your social security number. This is legitimate for tax purposes and comes with some very official looking papers. What you win will be reported by the company to the IRS and will be counted as additional income in your taxes. (It’s a special earnings category and wasn’t nearly the dent we thought it would be.)

If you win, you will get paperwork with official affidavits, contact information for the contest representative, and will have to provide copies of a legal ID and passport number if it’s an international trip. At this point if any concerns come up, you should be able to contact someone from the host company.  If these things are all true, congrats, you won a legitimate travel contest!

Quite simply, read the rules of each contest. Rules tell you if this is really a contest you want (see below). But they also show you if this is an honest contest, a scame, or a timeshare sell. A legitimate contest will describe eligibility to enter, how to enter, what the prize is, and all of the legal jargon that covers the company. Read the fine print. No surprises. (Or you can let me read the fine print for you by following Travel Your Bucket on Facebook!)

Chichen Itza how to win travel contests

Is This Really a Travel Contest You Want to Win?

I can’t believe I’m saying this but not every trip is one you want. I’m not just talking about turning down an obviously dangerous or unappealing place. Not all trips are equal, even if the destination is appealing. For instance, two trips headline “Dream Trip to Italy.” But one’s small print is a fully paid trip to Italy. The other’s is four nights in Milan with a $500 air voucher. Can you afford the extra thousand or more for air for two? Does the second trip allow you to extend your days on your own dime if you want to see more of Italy? Is the 6 day trip to Milan just right for you or do you really want to see Rome?

Another example: you really want to see Machu Picchu. But are you interested in the 8-day all-expense paid trip there with the yoga excursion that focuses on specific chakras? Or you want to go to Scotland but do you want the 10-day trip that sees the Scottish Highlands by way of hikes and whisky testing? I’m all for the shotgun approach to entering every trip but make sure you know what the prize is and what to expect.

There tend to be two types of travel contests. Most are based on pure luck and some are what I loosely call skill contests. Luck is as simple as entering your name. Luck helped us “win” the drawing for the Final Four tickets in New Orleans. Because of this we could buy directly from the NCAA without getting gouged. Same with the Master’s practice round tickets. Luck helped my husband win a trip to Cancun at a bar’s trivia night. All you had to do was show up! These are the easiest to enter and thus most people flock to win these travel contests.

Skill contests call out to all of us 80s/90s kids that loved Where in the World is Carmen San Diego? They tend to be trivia type contests that involve some geographic knowledge (or the ability to operate a search engine.)

That’s how I won the trip Down Under, guessing each of the locations in Australia from the hints and pinning a map. It’s also how I got that t-shirt from Expedia as one of the 25 runner-ups. (Grand prize got 1 million Expedia points) But hey, that’s ok, I won that t-shirt 7 years ago and still sleep in it. So it’s pretty much the same as a free trip to Paris! Right? Sigh. Regardless, these contests are a bit harder or take a bit more time so the odds are more in your favor.

Maximizing Your Travel Contest Time- Better Odds, Cleaner Inbox

Last piece, addressing how to enter these without it taking over your life. First, I strongly recommend that you set up an additional email that you use when you enter trips. I am not saying make a whole bunch of extra email addresses and enter them all! As I mentioned, if you win, you have to prove who you are. If you tried to hustle the system, they will disqualify you sooner or later. What I am saying is consider making an extra email address that you use solely for entering contests and only enter contests from that one address.

A designated contest email funnels all of the extra things that you will get signed up for into this space and you can keep this separate from your regular life. You scan for the “you won” titles and delete or read the rest at your leisure. Not only does it keep your main inbox cleaner, it makes you less likely to accidently delete an important email. I almost deleted that winning email for Australia. This close.  They wouldn’t have sent it twice and I had 72 hours to respond before they moved on. (Note: 72 hours to respond is standard. Then you’re out.)  I was about ready to junk it when I was on a cleaning spree in my regular inbox. I’ve kept things separate since.

Once you enter travel contests, you will find that similar sites that offer contests will now be in your inbox. They build upon themselves, thus more contest emails. You will start to get an idea for the companies that give out really fantastic trips and the ones that are able to sponsor portions of some great destinations. I’ll also post some of the best sites on my page as well.

Finally, most contests are a one time only submission. Enter and wait. A few, however, allow daily or weekly entries. I star those ones and return to them regularly to re-enter. I’m not a math wiz but even I know 30 entries give me better odds than 1. You must decide if it’s worth it to you. Additionally, many sites will offer extra entries if you share the contest on social media. I ‘m still learning social media, but I do post on Facebook and follow on Instagram to help my friends and get my entries. Just remember people may get sick of the spam.

So keep your eyes open for legitimate trips that fit your interests and jump right in. You may win nothing. You may get some t-shirts on your doorstep after playing a fun, online scavenger hunt. Or you may find yourself in seat 26B, between your spouse and the ecstatic, ultimately Bali wedding-bound Robert, getting ready to leave LAX and fly 13 hours to the other side of the planet. It’s a great big world out there, and almost anything can happen. Enter those travel contests and prepare to win! If you’re not prepared to wait for the win, there are always ways to hussle flight points , hussle hotel points , and other travel hacks to make those dream trips come true.

May the road rise to meet you, travelers, and may Lady Luck be by your side.

Hey there ,I won a trip and a passport tk travel anywhere I want but I haven’t received anything

This article is fantastic! I love how you broke down the tips for entering travel contests. It’s so helpful to know about setting up a separate email account and tracking entry deadlines. Definitely going to implement these strategies!

What a really interesting perspective. I’m glad someone wins these things! The only online contest I won was for a child-safe vegetable peeler – no joke.

I had to read this as I once won a pure luck contest for flights to Fiji from LA. Had a great trip but the flight to LA, the taxes, and the actual accommodations and activities add up! That being said, it did save me and a friend ~$800 each. Nice post!

I loke the tips you have given and I agree to all of them. Being a giveaway enthusiast myself, I have had luck or two in such a contest. However, I had to give up the Thailand trip as they were not paying me domestic air fair and their sport of entry was fixed. It was costing me a lot. But so cool you could go to Australia.

I legitimately held my breath when I read that you almost deleted the “winning” email for your Australia trip! Great tips here, I think I’m going to start entering a few travel comps now!

I will definitely give these tips a try and try and win a trip or two. Thanks for the great advice.

I didn’t have a clue 😆 Good to know thanks for posting!

The biggest thing I’ve won in life was concert tickets to see Luther Vandross. I also won tickets to attend a travel conference but had to pay for my flights and accomm. Here is to hoping to win an all expenses paid! Great tips Gotta be in it to win it!

Great ideas! Never hurts to try and 6 wins is pretty great 🙂

I can not believe you have won six times?! That’s crazy. I have never thought about even entering. Now I am going to have to 🙂 Thanks for these tips!

Win me a trip back to Ireland in 2019! 🙂

I’ll see what I can do, but just to be safe, maybe set aside a bit now…. 🙂

CrossFit Games suspended after competitor drowns during the swimming contest, CEO confirms

  • An athlete drowned during a swimming event at the 2024 CrossFit Games in Texas.
  • The county's medical examiner's office identified the athlete as 28-year-old Lazar Đukić, WFAA reported .
  • CrossFit CEO Don Faul announced the events were canceled for the rest of the day.

Insider Today

An athlete drowned while competing in a swimming event in Texas that was part of the 2024 CrossFit Games on Thursday.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Lazar Đukić, a 28-year-old athlete from Serbia, WFAA reported .

The incident happened during the first event of the games, called " Lake Day, " which included a 3.5-mile run followed by an 800-meter, or half-mile, swim.

Đukić went missing around 8 a.m. during the event's swimming portion. He appeared to be struggling, according to witness reports.

Cole Learn, a competitor from Ontario, Canada, told WFAA that he saw the athlete doing small turns in the water, trying to stay afloat before going under.

"It was at that time we started screaming to the lifeguard he needed help and in a few seconds he was under, he never came back up," he said.

The Fort Worth Fire Department and Fort Worth Police Department were called to the Marine Creek Reservoir around 8 a.m. local time, CBS News reported .

A dive team and drones helped officials locate the body about an hour later, according to the fire department's spokesperson, Craig Trojacek.

The remaining events of the day have been canceled. "We'll continue to be focused on our community and the family through this tragic set of circumstances," CrossFit CEO Don Faul said during a press briefing.

A GoFundMe for Đukić's family, organized by some of the athlete's sponsors, has raised over $187,000, so far.

An investigation is underway

Fire department personnel weren't at the lake initially, but Faul said other safety personnel were present during the event, according to ABC News .

Law enforcement is investigating the event's plans and the circumstances surrounding the drowning, Faul told WFAA News .

"I'm not too sure where the CrossFit Games is going to go from here, but they're going to have to make some drastic measurements to make sure that this never happens again," Learn said.

The competition's rules state that athletes must sign a waiver. These race waivers are common and help protect race directors and sponsors, not competitors. Basically, if a competitor is injured, dies, or has something stolen, the waiver protects the directors and sponsors from being sued.

Other athletes have struggled during similar CrossFit competitions.

CrossFit athlete Mat Fraser had a close call in 2017, endurance coach Chris Hinshaw said in 2021 on the podcast Mark Bell's Power Project .

"Fraser almost drowned one year in the Games," he said. Another athlete, Brent Fikowski, helped save him, according to Men's Health .

That same year, Will Powell had difficulty during a 500-meter swim in Wisconsin. Two other athletes, Robert Caslin and Gus VanDerVoort, kept him from slipping under the water, WFAA reported .

The Tarrant Regional Water District website describes Marine Creek Lake as calm, "ideal for swimming, kayaking," and other water sports.

Who Are the Far-Right Groups Behind the U.K. Riots?

After a deadly stabbing at a children’s event in northwestern England, an array of online influencers, anti-Muslim extremists and fascist groups have stoked unrest, experts say.

  • Share full article

Fires burn in a street with a vehicle also alight in front of ambulances and police officers.

By Esther Bintliff and Eve Sampson

Esther Bintliff reported from London, and Eve Sampson from New York.

Violent unrest has erupted in several towns and cities in Britain in recent days, and further disorder broke out on Saturday as far-right agitators gathered in demonstrations around the country.

The violence has been driven by online disinformation and extremist right-wing groups intent on creating disorder after a deadly knife attack on a children’s event in northwestern England, experts said.

A range of far-right factions and individuals, including neo-Nazis, violent soccer fans and anti-Muslim campaigners, have promoted and taken part in the unrest, which has also been stoked by online influencers .

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has vowed to deploy additional police officers to crack down on the disorder. “This is not a protest that has got out of hand,” he said on Thursday. “It is a group of individuals who are absolutely bent on violence.”

Here is what we know about the unrest and some of those involved.

Where have riots taken place?

The first riot took place on Tuesday evening in Southport, a town in northwestern England, after a deadly stabbing attack the previous day at a children’s dance and yoga class. Three girls died of their injuries, and eight other children and two adults were wounded.

The suspect, Axel Rudakubana , was born in Britain, but in the hours after the attack, disinformation about his identity — including the false claim that he was an undocumented migrant — spread rapidly online . Far-right activists used messaging apps including Telegram and X to urge people to take to the streets.

Over 200 people descended on Southport on Tuesday night, many traveling by train from elsewhere in Britain, the police said. Rioters attacked a mosque, wounded more than 50 police officers and set vehicles alight.

On Wednesday night, another far-right demonstration brought clashes with the police in central London, leading to over 100 arrests. Smaller pockets of disorder broke out in Hartlepool, in northeastern England; in the city of Manchester; and in Aldershot, a town southeast of London.

On Friday night, Northumbria Police said its officers had been “ subjected to serious violence ” as far-right demonstrators set fires and attacked officers in Sunderland, a city in the northeast.

Saturday brought violent protests to cities including Hull, Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham and Stoke-on-Trent, as well as Belfast, Northern Ireland. In Liverpool, the police said more than 300 people had been involved in “violent disorder” on Saturday night, with businesses looted and two officers hospitalized.

The chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, Gavin Stephens, told BBC Radio on Friday that extra officers would be on Britain’s streets and that the police would use lessons learned from the 2011 London riots .

“We will have surge capacity in our intelligence, in our briefing and in the resources that are out in local communities,” he said. The organization has said that nearly 4,000 additional officers have been deployed to deter the violence.

Which groups are behind the unrest?

Several far-right groups have been at the riots or promoted them on social media. David Miles, a prominent member of Patriotic Alternative, a fascist group, shared photographs of himself in Southport, according to Hope Not Hate , a Britain-based advocacy group that researches extremist organizations.

Other far-right agitators spread information about the protest on social media, including British Movement , a neo-Nazi group. Images of the protests examined by Hope not Hate showed some people with Nazi tattoos .

After the disorder in Southport, the police said that supporters of the English Defence League had been involved. The riots have also attracted people linked to soccer violence, or hooliganism, which has long overlapped with nationalist movements in Britain.

Officials noted that not everyone at the demonstrations had far-right views. David Hanson, a cabinet minister, told LBC Radio on Friday: “Some might be caught up in the summer madness. Some might be people who’ve got genuine concerns.”

But, he warned, “If you are organizing this now, we will be watching you.”

What is the English Defence League?

Created in 2009, the English Defence League was a far-right street movement notorious for violent protests and an anti-Islam, anti-immigration stance.

The group emerged in Luton, England, where community tensions had risen after a handful of Islamic extremists chanted abuse at British soldiers returning home from Iraq. Luton was already associated with Islamist extremism, because it was home to a small number of adherents to Al Muhajiroun, an extremist group implicated in the 2005 London bombings.

Among the English Defence League founders was Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, who goes by the name Tommy Robinson . Born in Luton, he was at one time a member of the far-right British National Party. He also had connections to soccer violence and was convicted of leading soccer fans in a brawl in Luton in 2010.

In the group’s early years, regional divisions carried out local demonstrations, including protests over planned mosques, and engaged in actions like placing pig heads around Muslim sites.

According to Matthew Feldman, a specialist on right-wing extremism, the group represented a new stage in far-right British politics, because unlike the National Front or the British National Party, it did not contest elections.

“This is direct-action politics, disseminated and coordinated via the new media — ranging from Facebook to mobile phones, and digital film to YouTube,” Professor Feldman wrote in a 2011 academic study of the English Defence League.

In 2013, Mr. Yaxley-Lennon said he had broken ties with the league. And after leadership disputes and internal divisions, the group no longer formally exists. But experts say that many of its supporters remain active through other nationalist groups with similar aims and tactics.

In the later 2010s, Mr. Yaxley-Lennon rose to prominence in international circles that shared his anti-Muslim stance, including in Europe and the United States . In the past week, he has used social media, including a previously banned X profile that was reinstated under Elon Musk , to promote falsehoods about the identity of the Southport attacker.

Nowadays, experts say the English Defence League has evolved into a diffuse idea spread mainly online. Its Islamophobic and xenophobic stance has become an “ideal that people self-radicalize themselves into,” said Sunder Katwala, the director of British Future, a nonprofit that researches public attitudes on immigration and identity.

Why is the disorder so hard to quash?

Many far-right groups in Britain have deliberately moved away from formal hierarchies and leadership structures, experts say.

Joe Mulhall, Hope Not Hate’s director of research, called the movement “post organizational” in a 2018 analysis . Social media and other technologies, he wrote, offer “new ways for it to engage in activism outside the confines of traditional, organizational structures.”

Violent street rallies, a core part of the English Defence League’s rise, often serve as a recruiting tool for extremist groups, according to Paul Jackson, a University of Northampton professor who specializes in the history of radicalism and extremism.

“Social movements thrive on such demonstrations,” he wrote in a 2011 paper . “They are ‘performances’ that can reinforce the perceived senses of injustice and being ignored by mainstream voices to followers.”

The police may also struggle to respond to mobs that can be conjured within hours through private messaging apps. According to Professor Feldman, “police are still oftentimes thinking in 20th-century terms — that something like this might take a few days to set up; that they might ask for a permit for a march.”

The Southport riot, he said, “was very nearly a flash demo.”

China tied the U.S. on Olympic golds — here's how

PARIS — Everywhere you looked at the 2024 Paris Games , Americans dominated . Team USA sent by far the most athletes. Hordes of stars-and-stripes-clad tourists made the trip across the Atlantic. And celebrities like Snoop Dogg and Lady Gaga became the Games’ cultural icons.

There is one crucial metric in which the U.S. did not smash the competition, however: gold medals.

With all the events completed, China tied Team USA in the medal table , with 40 golds. (While the American news media typically goes on total medals, most of the rest of the world, including Paris 2024’s official count, bases its table on golds won.)

Whereas Team USA has focused on athletics and swimming, China majors in diving , table tennis, weightlifting, shooting and badminton. In fact, around a fifth of China’s 302 golds since 1984 have come in diving. This year was no different, with China winning every diving gold available.

“I’m very proud of China and all the gold medals it has won,” said Fang Zheng, 30, a Chinese student studying in France who was lining up to watch breaking Friday. “When an athlete wins gold, it’s an honor for themselves and their families, but also the country.”

China's Chen Yiwen competes in the women's 3m springboard diving final on Aug. 9, 2024.

This year, China also made breakthroughs in disciplines typically dominated by the U.S., specifically swimming. Its two golds here included the 4x100-meter medley, the first time in Olympic history that anyone had beaten the U.S.

The star of the show was Pan Zhanle, who jetted away from American Hunter Armstrong in the anchor leg, having already set a world record in the 100-meter freestyle five days before. The losing U.S. team included 10-time Olympic medalist Caeleb Dressel, who had to settle for silver.

Meanwhile, Zheng Qinwen became the first Asian tennis player to win women’s gold, and China’s winning artistic swimming score blew the U.S. and Spain out of the water. The Chinese routine, “Light of Life,” wowed the judges by creating a physical representation of the “mountain” the team had to overcome to win gold. Though Russia, long a dominant force in the sport, was excluded from these Games, China still achieved a score that far outstripped those of any competitors.

“Their execution is just out of this world,” Team USA’s Jacklyn Luu said.

China has also been quick to embrace some of the newer Olympic sports, including sport climbing, skateboarding, surfing and breaking. Deng Yawen won gold in women’s BMX freestyle in her Olympic debut. And China also has the youngest athlete at these Games, 11-year-old skater Zheng Haohao.

China’s newfound prowess in the pool has not come without significant scrutiny , however, after it emerged that 23 swimmers — including 11 who went to Paris — tested positive for banned heart medication in 2021 but were still allowed to compete.

China’s doping agency said they had eaten contaminated food, an explanation accepted by the World Anti-Doping Agency, WADA, which did not make the incident public until it was revealed by a New York Times investigation this year.

China vehemently denies allegations of doping, with a foreign ministry spokesperson telling NBC News last month that “Chinese swimmers are clean and have never feared testing.”

Men's team table tennis medal podium

It also accused the U.S. anti-doping agency, USADA, of double standards after it was revealed that the Americans had allowed athletes who tested positive from 2011 to 2014 to continue competing if they went undercover to catch other dopers.

China has also zeroed in on American sprinter Erriyon Knighton, who tested positive for the performance enhancer trenbolone in March but, like the Chinese athletes, was cleared after his country’s agency said he had eaten contaminated meat.

The current American-Chinese Olympic rivalry is part of a geopolitical sporting duopoly that has existed since around 2004. Though the U.S. tends to win, when Beijing hosted the Games in 2008, it swept the field with 51 golds to Team USA’s 36.

How it does that is no secret and in many ways is similar to what the U.S. and other countries do.

It has pumped ever more funding into the Games while focusing on specific sports that it knows will return a healthy number of honors. Having 1.4 billion people does not hurt, of course, although as India will attest (no golds, one silver and five bronzes in Paris this year), having a colossal potential talent pool does not guarantee success.

The last time an opaque, one-party state accused of running a doping program rivaled the USA in the medal table, it was the Soviet Union.

Back in those Cold War days, China’s Olympic program was still in its infancy.

China's Sun Mengya and Xu Shixiao react to winning gold in the women's canoe double 500-meter finals

After the 1949 communist revolution, Chinese leader Mao Zedong promoted exercise not only as an athletic imperative — building a strong, healthy working class and to defend the nation — but also as a cultural and political necessity. It would “serve the political purpose of building a class of citizens who were well-disciplined in both mind and body,” according to the Michigan-based nonprofit Association for Asian Studies in its journal Education About Asia .

And at the Helsinki Games in 1952, China saw just how potent a geopolitical weapon the Olympics could be. The Soviet Union achieved huge success, running the U.S. close in the medal table and showing “how a socialist country could defeat Western democratic countries on the international stage,” the essay in Education About Asia said.

China would not win its first medals for 30 more years, however, after it withdrew from the International Olympic Committee in protest over the participation of Taiwan, which it sees as a rogue province that rightfully belongs to Beijing.

The international sporting freeze began to thaw in the 1970s, first with the historic “pingpong diplomacy” of 1971, when the U.S. table tennis team became the first international sporting delegation to tour China in decades, paving the way for a visit by President Richard Nixon a year later. That direction of travel was further expedited in the late 1970s with the “reform and opening up” policies Deng Xiaoping enacted after Mao’s death.

China finally returned to the Games at Los Angeles in 1984 following an IOC agreement that said Taiwan would compete under the name “Chinese Taipei.” Beijing soon became a medal machine, climaxing at Beijing in 2008. That landmark event in the country’s modern history coincided with its meteoric economic rise as the West ailed under the financial crisis the same year.

China's Li Fabin competes in the men's 61kg weightlifting event

Amid heavy criticism, the IOC said those Games would help revolutionize politics and human rights in what was then the world’s most populous country. That never came.

Under President Xi Jinping, who came to power four years later, China has become more authoritarian , according to Western governments and watchdogs, an assessment Beijing rejects.

Today, all countries see success in the Games as a way to project power internationally. But China takes that to a whole new level, where not only are gold seen as a totem of nationalistic pride, but silvers are often lambasted on social media.

Meanwhile, its State Council has vowed to make China “a modern leading sports socialist country by 2050” and declared that its “global influence in sports should be ranked near the top globally.”

And in this new era of Sino-Western rivalry, more nationalistic elements of the Chinese media use the Olympics to portray China in a positive light against the perfidious Americans and Europeans. The doping argument at these Games has only intensified that dynamic.

“The U.S. using its hegemonic influence and power to contain China and other competitors in sports is truly a disgrace and unsportsmanlike,” sports commentator Li Xiang told the hawkish Global Times newspaper Friday. China, on the other hand, “has demonstrated charm and sportsmanship in Paris, as Chinese young athletes win friendship and respect from their rivals and foreign audiences.”

If you are visiting Taiwan from May 1st to June 30th 2025, you are in luck and you can win NT$5,000 (approximately SGD$210) of travel incentives! This amazing campaign is called “Taiwan – the Lucky Land 遊台灣金福氣” and it is generously organised by Taiwan Tourism Administration.

I am so excited about visiting Taiwan again in 2023 so in true #auntiewendy spirit, I have looked through Taiwan – The Lucky Land website and Taiwan Tourism Administration Singapore’s announcements and put together this quick guide to the Taiwan The Lucky Land giveaway. Hope you will win Taiwan freebies while enjoying Taiwan!

What is Taiwan – The Lucky Land campaign?

Taiwan – The Lucky Land is a travel incentive campaign for foreign international travellers who are visiting Taiwan from May 1st to June 30th 2025. As part of the campaign to welcome travellers to Taiwan, Taiwan is giving out travel prizes (NT$5,000) to 500,000 lucky travellers.

Who is eligible?

You are eligible to take part in the giveaway if:

  • You are a foreign independent traveler who does not a Taiwan (Republic of China ROC) passport.
  • You are staying in Taiwan between 3 to 90 days.
  • You are an independent traveler and you are not part of any tour groups and you are not applying for any group-related Taiwan travel incentives.

What are the prizes?

You can win one of the three types of prizes worth NT$5,000!  The NT$5,000 prizes are provided either in the form of a pre-paid (E-ticket) card or a set of accommodation vouchers. These prizes are valid for up to 90 days after issuance.

Important notes about using the free value cards

  • You can use the card to make payment for transportation (like train and buses) and at stores and attractions that accept the card.
  • Each payment (or each time you tap the card) is capped at NT$1,500.
  • The total spending usage per day cannot exceed NT $3,000.
  • The validity period for the e-ticket card is 90 days. The first batch of limited-edition e-ticket cards can be used until Dec 31, 2023.

EasyCard (悠遊卡), iPASS card (一卡通), and iCash 2.0 card (旅游卡) are contactless smart cards (also called integrated circuit IC card). They have similar functions and the main difference is that they are issued by different companies. You can use them for transportation and shopping. Many shops like convenience stores, bubble tea stores, shopping malls, restaurants, and also many tourist attractions accept both cards. I have both cards and they are super convenient! Tap and go!

2. Accommodation Vouchers

If you win this, you will receive 5 vouchers of NT$1,000 each. The vouchers can be used at the participating hotels or bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) listed on Taiwan – The Lucky Land website .

I looked through the comprehensive list of hotels and B&Bs and there are over 400 accommodation options! You can choose from luxurious hotels in Taipei like Regent Taipei and Silks Place Yilan , affordable hotels like Holiday Inn Express, and a wide range of B&Bs and hostels.

Important notes about using accommodation vouchers

  • 5 vouchers of NT$1,000 each are issued to the winner and can only be used by the winner.
  • Each voucher can be used once and no change or resale is allowed.
  • The voucher is applicable to partner tourist hotels and B&Bs in Taiwan that have obtained a tourist hotel license or a registration certificate in accordance with these regulations.
  • 90 days starting from the day the travel prize is claimed and collected.
  • Make sure you register with your personal information correctly! When registering for the lucky draw, the traveler is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and authenticity of the information that they supply. If a traveler is unable to participate in the event or collect a prize due to any errors, this shall be the responsibility of the traveler and not the event organizer.

There are two ways to redeem the vouchers:

  • You can use the vouchers for hotels and B&Bs that accept reservations either through a) in-house channels or b) a third party, such as Agoda or a travel agency.
  • If a reservation is made via a hotel’s official in-house channel (such as its website or by email/telephone/Line), you can pay the agreed-upon amount upon arrival using the accommodation vouchers.
  • Take note! If a reservation is made via a third-party service, any discounts involved shall not be accepted by the hotel, and you must pay the “full price” as charged by the hotel. Payment must be made upon arrival using the accommodation vouchers. (Thus, the room fee may be higher than that indicated when the reservation was made.) Full payment of any outstanding amount must be made upon arrival using the accommodation vouchers

  Category 2

  • You can use the vouchers for hotels and B&Bs that only accept reservations through official in-house channels, such as via the hotel’s website.
  • For these hotels and B&Bs, vouchers will not be accepted for booking made via a third party, such as Agoda.
  • When a reservation is made through a hotel’s official in-house channel, you pay the agreed-upon rate upon arrival and can use the accommodation vouchers to make all or part of this payment.

Boston will raise its championship banner and begin its NBA title defense on Tuesday, Oct. 22 against the New York Knicks at TD Garden, according to a report Monday from The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

It’s a fitting opponent for the occasion. The Knicks finished second in the Eastern Conference standings last season and project as one of the Celtics’ top challengers after bolstering their roster with an offseason trade for Mikal Bridges.

The Celtics won the East by 14 games and then blitzed through the playoffs, losing just three times across four series en route to the franchise’s 18th NBA crown.

Boston won’t face its NBA Finals opponent, the Dallas Mavericks, until the new year. This season’s two C’s-Mavs games are set for Jan. 25 in Dallas and Feb. 6 at TD Garden, Charania reported.

Unsurprisingly, the Celtics reportedly will be part of the NBA’s annual Christmas Day showcase, hosting the Philadelphia 76ers on Dec. 25. The Sixers, who added Paul George to join stars Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, are another team looking to dethrone the Celtics in the East.

The NBA had yet to release its full regular-season schedule as of Monday afternoon, but that should happen in the coming days. In each of the last two years, the schedule was announced on Aug. 17.

The Celtics have made their five-game preseason schedule public. They’ll open with a pair of exhibitions against the Denver Nuggets in Dubai on Oct. 4 and 6, then face Philadelphia once (home, Oct. 12) and the Toronto Raptors twice (home, Oct. 13; away, Oct. 15).

Boston returns its entire championship-winning core from last season, re-signing reserves Sam Hauser, Luke Kornet, Neemias Queta and Xavier Tillman and extending starters Jayson Tatum and Derrick White. The Celtics will be shorthanded to begin the upcoming campaign, however, as starting center Kristaps Porzingis is expected to miss at least the first month following offseason leg surgery.
