MEDIA ADVISORY

July 14, 2023

BCCI-CSA announce fixtures for India’s Tour of South Africa 2023-24

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Cricket South Africa (CSA) are delighted to confirm the schedule of India’s all-format tour of South Africa to be played in December and January.

The tour will begin with a three-match T20I series, followed by a three-match ODI series and will culminate with the Freedom Series for Gandhi-Mandela Trophy involving two Tests.  Mr Jay Shah, Honorary Secretary, BCCI said: “The Freedom Series is significant not just because it features two excellent Test teams, but also because it honours Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, two great leaders who shaped our respective nations, and the world around them. The Boxing Day Test and the New Year Test are amongst the most important fixtures on the international cricket calendar and the schedule has been planned particularly around these marquee dates. India has always received strong support in South Africa, and I am confident that fans will be treated to some enthralling contests with no shortage of intensity.”  Mr Lawson Naidoo, CSA Chairperson, said:  “I eagerly await the arrival of the Indian Cricket Team and their passionate fans on our shores. This is an important tour for both teams and I am really pleased that we will have a full tour comprising all three formats of the game. Both South Africa and India boast exceptional talent, and we can look forward to exciting cricket and thrilling matches. The tour also allows us to showcase the best of South Africa and we have spread out matches across the nation. We share an excellent rapport with BCCI, and I thank them for their support right throughout.”

So that wraps the ODI series up and now it's time to look ahead to a highly anticipated Test series that starts on the 26th. A lot of India's senior players will be returning to the field to try and conquer what is in many ways a final frontier for the Indian Cricket Team - a Test series win in South Africa. We'll be right here bringing all the action to you but until then, this is Anurag Hegde signing off on behalf of Sagar Chawla, Saurabh Shankar and Vinod Kumar . Take care and goodbye.

KL Rahul | India captain: Always love being around the boys. Nice to get back on the cricket field after a disappointing world cup. Have played with a lot of them in the IPL, nice to get out here and play with them. Usually my message is to always enjoy the game, to give your best and not worry about the rest. They’re great cricketers but few of them haven’t played internationally so it’s about giving them some time to adjust. It’s about making their roles clear and they all gave their 100% so nothing more I can ask. Sanju has been a phenomenal performer in the IPL, unfortunately hasn’t got a lot of chances at the top of the order for various reasons but nice to see him do well today.

Arshdeep Singh | Player of the Series: There was always something in the wicket throughout the day. Sometimes it was gripping and stopping. The plan was simple, it was to bowl wicket-to-wicket and get LBWs and bowleds. IPL has been a very good platform for us youngsters, there isn’t a big gap between IPL and international cricket. You understand the mindset of international cricketers and it helps. We are all loving the chances we got. We’d love to give our all in the future as well and do well.

Sanju Samson | Player of the Match: Proud of it, especially considering the result as well. Have been working hard, not just for the past couple of months so it’s nice. This format gives you some extra time to understand the wicket and the bowler’s mindset. Batting at the top of the order gives you those 10-20 extra deliveries. The whole country is very proud of how Tilak Verma has stepped up, lot more to expect from him. The seniors have set the standards of Indian cricket and the juniors are coming in and doing the job. It’s not very easy, traveling in between and playing every 2-3 days but they’re getting the job done.

Aiden Makram | South Africa captain: We were certainly up for it, always a nice feeling in a series decider, nice venue and good crowd in, unfortunately we couldn’t get it done. We were good in patches, just couldn’t stitch the momentum up in our favor for long enough. The surface didn’t change much throughout the game, thought 290 was very chaseable. We were good with the ball. Not sure the toss played a major factor today. The Test series is very exciting, two great venues for two Test matches in South Africa, doesn’t get much better than that.

20:44 Local Time, 18:44 GMT, 00:14 IST: A clinical performance from India, they win the game and thereby also win the series 2-1. Considering this isn't nearly India's full strength team, that's an excellent result. It was a great effort with bat from India as they posted 296 after being in a spot of bother. They were led by a prolific century from Sanju Samson, his first in international cricket, and although it wasn't the biggest of totals, they bowled well to make it seem like a lot more than it was. South Africa were actually going along nicely, de Zorzi was once again the pick of the batters as he made a fluent 81. They were going along nicely at 141/2 at the halfway mark but that's when the tide turned. Aiden Markram's wicket proved to be just the opening India needed as they kept chipping away at the wickets at regular intervals. None of the Protean batters were able to hold fort and build a partnership and once Miller departed in the 38th over, it was only a matter of time before India won. Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the Indian bowlers with figures of 4/30 from 9 overs.

Avesh Khan to Hendricks, out Caught by Samson!! That's all done then. Fitting in a way that Samson takes the catch. Was a fuller length delivery on off-stump, Hendricks shuffled across looking to scoop it fine but there was too much pace on it, it looped up off the face of the blade and Samson took an easy catch at short third man. Hendricks c Samson b Avesh Khan 18(26) [4s-2]

Avesh Khan to Hendricks, THATS OUT!! Caught!!

Avesh Khan to Nandre Burger, 1 run, length delivery on off-stump, Nandre Burger makes some room before easing it down to third man

Avesh Khan to Nandre Burger, no run, length delivery on off-stump, Nandre Burger backs away and gets a thick outside edge that goes to the left of slip, was along the ground

Avesh Khan to Hendricks, 1 run, full on off-stump, slogged away towards cow corner, protection out there so just one

Avesh Khan to Hendricks, no run, length delivery on middle, Hendricks looked to slog it away and got a thick inside edge on to pad

Arshdeep Singh to Nandre Burger, no run, nails the yorker on middle-stump again, Nandre Burger is up to the task though

Arshdeep Singh to Nandre Burger, no run, slower yorker on middle, Nandre Burger blocks

Arshdeep Singh to Nandre Burger, no run, short of length on off-stump, Nandre Burger hangs back and bunts it into the off-side

Arshdeep Singh to Nandre Burger, no run, goes for the dipping yorker again, Nandre Burger keeps it out

Arshdeep Singh to Nandre Burger, no run, hat-trick ball and Nandre Burger survives! Full and just outside off, hint of reverse it looked like as Nandre Burger was beaten

Nandre Burger, left handed bat, comes to the crease

Arshdeep Singh to Williams, out Lbw!! Not sure why he reviewed that! Was a full-toss that was dipping into middle-leg, Williams didn't pick it at all and it hit him flush on the front pad. He'd moved across a touch too so it was plumb in front. Hawkeye returned with all reds. Arshdeep now has an opportunity to pick up a fifer here. Williams lbw b Arshdeep Singh 2(3)

Cricket: How to watch the India tour of South Africa live

India's men will tour South Africa from 10 December 2023 to 7 January 2024 for a multi-format series made up of three T20Is followed by three ODIs before culminating in two Tests.

(2023 Getty Images)

Two of the biggest nations in men's cricket go head-to-head in a multi-format series to end 2023 and start 2024.

India travel to South Africa to compete in all three main forms of the sport: Twenty20 (T20) Games, One Day Internationals, and five day Test Matches.

The Freedom Series will kick-off in Durban on 10 December for the first of three T20 Internationals. India are ranked world number one, while the Proteas are ranked sixth in the rankings.

India will have high hopes in the shortest format of the game following their recent 4-1 series win over Australia on the subcontinent.

The T20s will be followed by three ODIs. India were the runners-up from the recent Cricket World Cup on home soil, while South Africa lost in the semi-final of that event.

The tour will culminate with two Test matches, with the traditional Boxing Day Test in Centurion before the two sides cross swords again in the longest form of the game in the New Year. The Test matches are a part of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle.

South Africa has opted to rest some of their top players – for the T20s and the One-Day Internationals – including regular captain Temba Bavuma and fast bowler Kagiso Rabada . Many of the stalwarts will, however, return to boost the Proteas' stocks for first-class cricket. Aiden Markram will wear the captain's armband in Bavuma's absence for the limited-over matches

India will follow a similar recipe with some of their mainstays such as Rohit Sharma , Virat Kohli, and Hardik Pandya taking a break from white-ball cricket. The squad will be back to full strength for the two Test matches.

More than 65% of Indian population is aged below 35. With increasing spending power, these young travelers make for a large potential traveler base.

The Skift India Newsletter is your go-to platform for all news related to travel, tourism, airlines, and hospitality in India.

Indian Gen Z and Millennials prefer to travel in the off-peak season to avoid crowds and reduce costs, according to a report by online visa application platform Atlys.

Young travelers are attending international sports events, looking at cultural hotspots, and going on solo adventures as part of their travels. During the Olympic Games this year, the platform saw a 60% increase in visa applications from India for France. This was driven in large part by younger travelers, Atlys said.

“Understanding the preferences of younger travelers is crucial as they drive major trends in the travel industry,” said Mohak Nahta, CEO of Atlys.

Gen Z and Millennials prefer destinations such as the UAE, Vietnam, and Egypt. On the other hand, solo travelers are preferring Egypt, Azerbaijan, and Oman.

Interestingly, Gen Z and Millennials from Maharashtra, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh are driving outbound travel from India, Atlys said. These states have shown a significant volume of visa applications.

The Young Indian Travelers: India is a growing source of outbound tourism, as it is developing “fast-growing pools of first-time tourists,” according to consulting firm McKinsey and Company . McKinsey has also projected that India will become the fourth-largest domestic travel market in terms of spending by 2030 – it currently ranks sixth.

Earlier this year, a report by online travel agency Skyscanner had said that over 81% of Indian Gen Zs start planning their first international trips as soon as they secure a job or receive their first paycheck.

Budget is the most important consideration for the young travelers, as more than half of the youth prefer to use their own money, including income and personal savings, for these travels. About 20% of young Indian travelers are also using schemes such as buy-now-pay-later while booking their trips.

South Africa Announces New Preferred Visa System

South Africa’s department of home affairs has announced a new preferred visa system aiming to attract Chinese and Indian travelers. The system will be implemented in January next year.

Indian and Chinese nationals do not have visa-free access to South Africa. The new system, the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme, is expected to cut down some of the red tape around South Africa’s visa process for the nationals of the two countries. Under the scheme, approved tour operators from India and China will be able to register with the department and offer fast-tracked visas to their clients.

Meanwhile, South African Tourism has partnered with Ethiopian Airlines to offer affordable air travel to the country as part of a new campaign. The campaign offers special low airfare on Ethiopian Airlines’ routes from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai to Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Thomas Cook Witnessing Growing Festival Tourism

Travel services company Thomas Cook India and its group company SOTC are witnessing a growing trend of festival tourism. Thomas Cook said that there is a shift from the traditional home-based celebrations among Indians, as they are now increasingly traveling with family for fun celebrations during festivals.

The company has launched festive tours for Durga Puja and Diwali to capitalize on the trend.

It said that Indians are now opting for longer stays during festival vacations: the stays have increased from three days earlier to 6-15 days now. “The appetite to spend has increased by 10-15% YoY,” the company said.

Apart from destinations like Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi, new destinations are also emerging in the list of preferred locations: Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Georgia.

Accor Signs Pullman in Varanasi

Accor has announced the signing of a Pullman hotel in Varanasi. The 180-room hotel is set to open in January 2029. In November last year, Accor had signed its second Pullman in India, set to come up in Amritsar in 2027.

Accor currently operates 64 properties in India, and has a developmental pipeline of 30 hotels.

In an earnings call earlier this year , Accor CEO Sébastien Bazin had said that it will benefit as the middle class expands, especially in India. “What’s most important … is the increase of the emerging middle-class population, which went up one billion in the last 10 years, half of those from India. Those are the preferred targets for Ibis, Mercure, and many of the hotels in our core,” he had said.

He further said, ““India alone… had 35 million international travelers for the last two to three years,” Bazin said. “There is no question in my mind that India will reach the 150 million mark that we’ve been enjoying with China and America.”

The Leela Partners With RedBeryl

The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts has entered into a strategic alliance with luxury lifestyle management company RedBeryl. The partnership will provide RedBeryl members access to the Leela Discovery membership.

Shweta Jain, Chief Marketing and Sales Officer of The Leela, said, “Desire for immersive travel experiences continues to rise, particularly among the young affluent. Over 60% of luxury travelers are seeking custom, stress-free experiences that align with their lifestyle.”

As part of the alliance, RedBeryl and The Leela will launch joint marketing campaigns and co-create exclusive events to highlight the features of the partnership.

Let's Talk

A Massive Step Forward to Boost Tourism from China and India

We are delighted to share a significant development that promises to enhance South Africa’s appeal as a tourism destination for visitors from China and India. The Department of Home Affairs has just announced the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS), a pivotal initiative set to reform the visa application process, making it faster and more efficient for tour operators and travellers from these key markets.

This announcement is not merely a policy change—it’s a reflection of persistent advocacy by the private sector for the removal of red tape impacting tourism from these key growth markets.

The new scheme, which reflects a 'can-do' attitude from Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber , is a direct outcome of ongoing public-private sector dialogues aimed at improving our competitiveness in these essential tourism markets.

For years, we have communicated the need for streamlined visa processes to unlock the full potential of the Chinese and Indian tourist markets. Our recent discussions, including a notable meeting with Minister Schreiber, have now borne fruit, leading to a scheme that prioritises efficiency and responsibility.

For further details on this transformative initiative, please read the full media statement from the Department of Home Affairs here .
