Thoroughbred horse racing has long been a sport for the world’s elite. The horses are worth millions, the owners are worth billions, and getting an inside glimpse at this high flying world was reserved only for a select few—until now.

This year, the top horse racing families in Lexington, Kentucky decided to officially open their doors to the public, allowing visitors to walk their grounds, get close to champions like American Pharoah, and even visit a veterinary hospital for the animals.

“In the past, it’s been difficult to access these exclusive locations ,” Anne Sabatino Hardy, executive director of nonprofit Horse Country Inc., tells Condé Nast Traveler. “You used to have to try on your own by calling the farms directly to see if they would let you stop by. This is the first time the farm owners decided to come together to open their farms and create a structure to help visitors tour them.”

Horse Country offered their first tour in 2014, but will kick off the grand opening at the end of September, celebrating the official launch of their central booking website and the addition of 21 farms to the roster. Famous spots like Gainseway, the home to two-time champion sire Tapit, Darley at Jonabell, owned by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and Coolmore , where American Pharoah resides, will all be open to tourists.

"We need to do this to benefit the industry,” adds Hardy. “There was a generation skipped when it comes to thoroughbred racing and the fans are much older than compared to other sports. We and the farm owners are hoping that by offering an exclusive, interactive experience with the horses will inspire a new generation to get involved in the sport.”

To book, go on the website and choose from a variety of tours on different dates. Tickets for the 60 to 90-minute tours are $11 for children under 12, and $20 for adults. (No bundling discount is currently available.) As the program develops, the organizers hope to offer additional tiers of experiences, like having the owners themselves give tours of the grounds. Did we mention many of them are billionaires?

Welcoming American Pharoah To His Permanent Kentucky Home

Welcoming American Pharoah To His Permanent Kentucky Home

(Note: The following post was originally published in Jan. 2016 and updated in Oct. 2017)

Earlier this month, just as the New Year was starting, American Pharoah blissfully celebrated his fourth birthday. American Pharoah wasn’t alone in celebrating since every Thoroughbred horse in the Northern Hemisphere shares the same birthday regardless on when they were actually born: January 1 st . But while all thoroughbreds age on the same day, absolutely none of them came close to having the year that American Pharoah did in 2015.

American Pharoah’s Career

Halloween Day of 2015 is one that most Kentuckians are likely going to remember for a very, very long time. It was just after 6:00 PM during the final event of the 13 separate races that make up the legendary Breeders’ Cup , when 50,155 spectators watched American Pharoah soar across the finish line. As jockey Victor Espinoza turned to give the finish line camera a knowing smile, history had been written in horse racing. American Pharoah became the very first stallion ever in history to…well, you know the rest. But the most interesting part of American Pharoah’s story is what the next chapter of his life has in store for the first Triple Crown winner since 1978.

Life at Ashford Stud Farm

In early November, Bob Baffert, who has earned his place on the Mt. Rushmore of horse trainers, walked American Pharoah one last time. Baffert slowly led the horse to the barn at the Ashford Stud Horse Farm with promises of frequent trips to visit this once in a life time thoroughbred. And, ever the amiable horse, Pharoah was eager to pose for photos next to his new home. After all, these are some nice digs and a fantastic set up! His days of traveling across the country, endless rigorous training, and more are now all behind him. Instead, he’s currently enjoying acres and acres of fenced in Bluegrass beauty. For the last two months, American Pharoah has been settling into his new, permanent Kentucky home.

The Ashford Stud farm, like many in the region, has extensive ties to both politics and bourbon. The farm, which has grown exponentially in size over the years, was first established as a cattle farm by Colonel Edmund Taylor. Taylor was the grandnephew of 12 th President Zachary Taylor and mayor of nearby Frankfort, Kentucky for 16 years. But Taylor is probably most well-known for opening the nearby Old Taylor Distillery in the 1880’s and his likeness adorns a brand of bourbon today . Over the last 40 years, some of the finest stallions in the world have called Ashford Stud home. Pharoah certainly won’t be lonely in his comfortable surroundings.

Nearby Horse Farm Tours

There are over 400 horse farms throughout the state and nearly 150 in nearby Fayette County. And if American Pharoah wants to take a day trip to visit his sire, 2009 Kentucky Derby runner-up Pioneerof the Nile, dear old dad lives just less than 15 minutes away. At his new home, he’ll join 12 other legendary and beautiful stallions that are currently studding. American Pharoah can trade glory stories about the first Saturday in May as he chews the hay with fellow Kentucky Derby Winners Fusaichi Pegasus (2000) and Thunder Gulch (1995).

The farm is a relatively easy destination to reach. Situated just a few miles south of I-64 and located smack dab between the towns of Versailles and Frankfort makes it in an ideal location for tourists. In fact, the backside of the farm is just a stone’s throw from the iconic Labrot and Graham Distillery, which has been home to Woodford Reserve bourbon since the mid 1990’s.

Visit American Pharoah

So, how do admirers from coast to coast go about getting up close and personal with the first grand slam champion? Opportunity to visit is limited and time is short before American Pharoah scheduled set to begin his breeding season in mid-February. Mint Julep Tours has partnered with our friends at The Kentucky Derby Museum for “American Pharoah – A Champions Tour.”

The day-long guided tour includes a trip to Churchill Downs where guests experience “The Greatest Race,” enjoy a Historic Walking Tour of the Churchill Downs racetrack, and a stop in The Finish Line Gift Shop featuring American Pharoah merchandise. Then it’s off to Coolmore’s Ashford Stud Farm for a day with horse racing legends past and present, including American Pharoah. No tours are currently available as of Oct. 2017. Call today to find out how you can schedule a private tour.

If you chose to embark on a tour out to Woodford County, there are a few things to keep in mind when touring Ashford Stud or any working horse farm. First, you should know that very few of the horse farms have opened their front gates to visitors in the same way that the Bourbon Distilleries have in recent years. A handful of farms offer regularly scheduled, public tours, but most tours are private and need to be set up well in advance. When visiting, photos are almost always welcome, but keep those hands to yourself.

Tips for Horse Farm Visits

A horse’s temperament can vary wildly from stallion to stallion. Nothing ruins a nice day in horse country liked being kicked or bitten. And don’t expect to saddle up, hop on and go for a ride; remember that it’s a working farm not the county fair. Another good rule of thumb is to dress for a day at the farm. Opt for comfy clothes and sturdy shoes; leave fashionable Derby day outfits behind. Finally, while the view is often worth the visit alone, many farms don’t exactly have state-of-the-art restrooms or much less a gift shop.

2016 marks the beginning of the next chapter of American Pharoah’s life. It is absolutely thrilling that this amazing horse is going to be right in our own Kentucky back yard welcoming visitors for years to come. American Pharoah has earned the mantle of an once-in-a-lifetime horse on the track and Mint Julep Tours is delighted for the opportunity to bring guests from around the country to show up and say, “Thanks for everything.”

Note that Ashford Stud does their best to let fans see American Pharoah and other champions, however, no guarantees can be made for any particular tour- shows are pending the health and welfare of the animals.

Went to see American Pharoah

We wanted to see a triple crown winner so we booked a good bit in advance to see American Pharaoh Tour adds a couple of stops. One is very good. Magdalena Farm. Several horse there including foals so it was neat to see Also stopped at Hill N Dale. We are only allowed in parking lot. That seemed like a waste of time The Pharoah stop at Ashford was fantastic. They do tour all of their stallions and facility which is beautiful. They do a nice job even though they are not used to taking visitors yet. No Pharoah merchandise there yet which they acknowledged they are discussing but still worth every penny to see him and take the afternoon to take the tour

We appreciate your review and glad you had a good time on the tour. Did you miss seeing Seattle Slew's grave and statue at Hill'N'Dale? That is the reason to stop at Hill'N'Dale for people to see his grave since he is a triple crown winner. Most people really enjoy that stop. The tours will be getting better when Ashford Stud is more prepared for the tours. This is all new to them and it takes awhile. They will be getting a gift shop later on. Tell your friends about the tour and tell them to call Horse Farm Tours for a tour.

Our first trip to Lexington, and we had to see the horse farms. Our tour guide, Leslie Bruner was Fantastic! She was quite knowledgeable about the farms and the horses. But what was amazing is she was a walking history book, which made the tour even better. She could name dates and facts about who settled the farms, why they were granted the land, who married and why. It was great. I would highly recommend Leslie B. To be your guide if you plan to visit the farms. Thanks again Leslie Brunel

Leslie is very good with her horse farm tour. She studies up on the horse industry and enjoys showing the farms and horses to the tourist. We are so glad you enjoyed the tour. Please tell your friends and tell them to call Horse Farm Tours, Inc. for a tour.

Awesome tour. David was very knowledgeable and friendly. My favorite part of the tour was visiting McPeek farms. We got to get up close and personal with the horses. Seeing Keeneland Racetrack up close and personal was also really neat. It was also really interesting getting the inside scoop on the thoroughbred business.

We had a group tour last week prior to going to Keeneland. Our guide Leslie was great, very knowledgeable, and understanding of what we wanted to experience. From a one day old colt, to the grave of Seattle Slew, we saw horse country up close. The ability to talk to grooms, jockeys, and stable crew was also a highlight. Don't pass up this opportunity if you are in Lexington!

Our goal is for you to see the horse country up close and personal. That is what it is all about, getting to talk to the grooms, jockeys, and stable crew. We're just back home from Lexington, and one of the abiding memories was of our tour of the horse farms led by Ernie Flynn. As a long-time veteran of the industry, Ernie's commentary was rich in knowledge and lore, and there wasn't a question asked that he was unable to answer. And all this from a gentleman who exuded traditional southern charm. The next day we would attend the Bluegrass Stakes, and the information provided by Ernie gave us valuable insight that added greatly to our enjoyment of our time at Keeneland. Please pass on to Ernie our deep appreciation. - George Hutchison, London Ontario

A special farm tour is getting lots of attention as American Pharoah's fans want to see the champion in his next chapter of life, at stud.

The tour is s a chance to get up close and personal to Derby history and the world's first Triple Crown winner in 37 years.

"It's been great! It's been wonderful! We have people coming from across the United States to see the Coolmore Farm to do the farm tour and also see American Pharoah," Anne Hardy said.

The expansive, serene, stretch of Greenland is the new home for an American Pharoah.

"When they come to visit, they really have a high quality experience and great interaction with the horse and farm, the agriculture, the story and the history," Hardy said.

Coolmore is one of the largest industries for breeding, offering top stallions for stud.

Right now American Pharoah's stud fee sits at $200,000 for every foal born.

"All of American Pharoah's fans have posted pictures and selfies. (I) kind of loving seeing what he's been up to as he's making the transition into his second career," Hardy said.

Fans who take the Coolmoore America tour in Versailles, Kentucky, will also have the opportunity to see other derby greats, like Fusaichi Pegasus and Thunder Gulch.

"We have a stallion roster of 14 stallions which include American Pharoah. So as part of our tour, it's focused on the stallion area," Scott Calder said.

Coolmore Carm has been named the home of champions. And owners can't deny that American Pharoah has sparked a new interest and excitement to their tours and the industry.

"He is certainly a special ambassador for the sport and a tremendous athlete. So people are always fascinated with that dominance and not to mention his very special personality," Hardy said.

WLKY’s Fred Cowgill describes his personality as that of an "old soul," one that loves to be around people. It's perfect for spectators.

"What he's done is hugely significant in all circles. It's gone over and above and the general public is very aware of what he achieved. It's not normal. He's a once-in-a-lifetime horse and that brings a whole new level of excitement I think," Calder said.

Tickets for adults are $20 and kids under 12 are $11.

But tours from late November  through Jan. 8 are already sold out.

Tour Itinerary:

Red square:.

Russia and Moscow are synonymous with Red Square and the Kremlin and that's hardly surprising as you'll find these places absolutely stunning!

  • - Walk-through the Resurrection Gate and don’t forget to flip a coin so you’ll be sure to come back one day!
  • - Visit the world's famous Kazan Cathedral .
  • - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!
  • - Admire the lovely St. Basil's Cathedral! The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
  • - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
  • - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.

Kitai-gorod:

Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.

  • - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
  • - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
  • - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
  • - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef).

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it.

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it.

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash.

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb.

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think?

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade.

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2.

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....

Ashford Stud, owned by John Magnier and located in the heart of Kentucky’s famous Bluegrass, is Coolmore’s home in America. While now much larger in size, the initial tract of land that Ashford consisted of was 465 acres. That land was originally part of an important cattle farm owned by Col. Edmund H. Taylor Jr. who founded the Old Taylor Distilleries in nearby Frankfort. Known as Hereford Farm, the property was developed around 1912 and operated as a cattle farm up until the late 1970s. At that time, Dr. Bill Lockridge began to transform the farm into a state of the art stud, fit for the finest stallions in the world.

After three years of careful planning and construction, Ashford opened its doors for the 1982 breeding season. The stallion roster was headlined by Storm Bird, a horse that was the highest rated two-year-old in Europe while trained by the legendary Vincent O’Brien. Among the resident mares at Ashford in 1982 was Terlingua. Her mating to Storm Bird that year would have a lasting impact on thoroughbred breeding worldwide through the exploits of their prolific son Storm Cat.

When Ashford became part of John Magnier’s Coolmore operation in the mid-1980s, Storm Bird, along with the likes of El Gran Senor and Woodman, helped to establish Coolmore’s reputation on an international level through the late 80s and early 90s.

1996 marked the retirement of Kentucky Derby winner Thunder Gulch, who is out of a daughter of Storm Bird, to Ashford. Thunder Gulch would soon gain the distinction of being the first champion sire to stand at Ashford when he topped the general sire’s list in 2001. Not to be outdone, Ashford sires Hennessy (2001), Tale of the Cat (2003), Giant’s Causeway (2005 & 2014), Uncle Mo (2015) and Scat Daddy (2017) all earned champion juvenile sire honors to add to those won by Woodman in 1990 and 1994. Giant’s Causeway also earned the distinction of becoming the first horse since Danzig to top the General Sires List on three occasions (2009, 2010 & 2012).

Just like our farm in Ireland is usually referred to as the Home of Champions, Ashford is home to some of the best young sires in America. The stallion roster is led by record breaking young sire Uncle Mo and Triple Crown winners American Pharoah and Justify. With a selection of the best proven sires and young sire prospects America has to offer standing alongside this illustrious pair, it’s safe to say Ashford’s iconic stallion barns will continue to house influential breed shapers for years to come.
