Alappuzha (or Alleppey) is a city on the shore of the Laccadive Sea in the state of Kerala. The name of the city falls from the 19th-century Alappuzha  Lighthouse which acted as modern GPS for the ships arriving at its shore. It is a beautiful city with many temples, beaches and parks that making it a thriving tourist spot.

Munnar is a city on a hill in the state of Kerala which previously acted as the summer hill resort for the British Raj elite. However, with its numerous waterfalls, peaks and other natural sites it has gained popularity among tourists.

Alleppey and Munnar are like the two different poles yet they are so close to each other a perfect weekend getaway trip at Kerala means a visit to both the places to enjoy both the beauties of nature.

How to reach?

By Air – The Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport from Alleppey which is located at a distance of 75 kilometers and 110 kilometers  from Munnar. The airport has regular connecting flights from all over the country as well as abroad making it an easy in and easy go for tourists. Tourists can hire a cab from the airport to reach their desired destination.

By Train – The Alleppey Railway Station  is the nearest railway station to Alleppey which as regular trains that connected the city to its various parts as well as it has trains to Cochin and Trivandrum. The closes railway station to Munnar is at Aluva, which is located at a distance of 110 kilometers and connects the hill station with rest of the state.

Religious places, 1) ambalappuzha sri krishna temple –.

It is an ancient Hindu temple which is dedicated to lord Krishna. The temple complex houses ancient wall paintings which are well preserved. The temple complex is huge which is to accommodate the many elephants that the temple has. 2) C.S.I Christ Church –

It is a stone church built in 1910 which has colonial style architecture. The doors and windows are speculated to have been gifted by Belgium during its establishment.

4) Chettikulangara Devi Temple –

This is temple is dedicated to Lord Sree Bhadrakali and is one of the most popular and most important religious temple in the whole of Kerala. According to the city tour guide the temple is said to be a staggering 1200 years old and the architecture of the temple is as grand as it can be. This makes it more popular among tourist and thus is a busy location.

5) Mullakkal Temple –

The Mullakkal temple at Alleppey is very popular among tourists and is visited my tons of tourist from around the country. Though the temple is dedicated to one main deity the temple complex also houses many other God’s like Hanuman, Ganapathi, Subramanya, Nagaraja, Navagraha, Sree Krishna and Ayyappa. The temple complex is huge with nice wall decorations and a clean surrounding. Every year during Christmas and New Years the street in front becomes a lively market place with many souvenir shops and food joints. Best Alleppey and Munnar trips have to have a visit to this temple.

6) Kanichukulangara Devi temple –

This is a Hindu temple which is dedicated to goddess Bhagawathi. This is one of the most popular temples in the region which makes the temple crowded all throughout the year.

7) Kidangamparambu Temple –

The temple is dedicated to Sree Bhuvaneswari Devi and Sree Badrakali. The temple compound is big enough and thus has many other deities inside the temple compound as well. Sree Ganapathy, Sree Sastha, Sree Murugan, Sree Krishna are some of the other deities that devotees might find here. The temple is known for its spiritual power and is popular among the locals as well as tourists.

8) Mararikulam Mahadeva Temple –

The temple is a majestic Shiva temple which is built in the Travancore style architecture. It is a huge temple compound, so a thing to do here would be a simple stroll around the temple complex to imbibe in the spiritual atmosphere.

I had written an ode to Kerala's backwaters in one of my earlier posts. Here I will share with you a detailed Alleppey itinerary for 2 days with best places to visit, tours and experiences to make the most of your short time.

Often touted as Venice of the East, Alleppey is known for the complex network of lagoons, lakes, and canals formed by the backwaters of Arabian Sea. Since time immemorial these waterways served as the economic backbone of the region, connecting Alleppey to other parts of Kerala and beyond.

In my Kerala itinerary I advised to drive to Alleppey from Kochi and spend one night there, before heading to Munnar . But you could also sail to Alleppey , stay for one night and return the next day.

Alappuzha – A Brief Background

Alappuzha, often anglicized as Alleppey, is more than just a coastal town in southern Kerala. Located in its namesake district, it's a melting pot of cultures, religions, and natural beauty. Nearly half of its population is Hindu, followed by Christians(26%) and Muslims(~24%), making it a glowing example of unity in diversity.

What sets Alapuzha apart are its brackish lagoons and lakes that lie almost parallel to the western coast of Kerala. Alleppey and Kumarakom, located on opposite sides of Vembanad Lake , are the two tourist hotspots of Kerala. While you'd love to spend days experiencing the blissful life of Alleppey, a one-night stay is sufficient for highlights.

23 Amazing Things to Do in Alleppey in One Day

Think you can't fit over 20 things to do in just one day in Alleppey ? Well, you might not be able to do them all, but you can see a lot while sailing in the backwaters of Vembanad Lake. Let's assume you reach Alleppey by noon and go through the list one by one.

1. Stay in a Houseboat

Check-in to your hotel, which in this case is also your vehicle for sightseeing. Yes, it is the famous Alleppey Houseboat.

One of the most iconic experiences you can have in Alleppey is staying in a houseboat. These floating hotels offer a unique blend of luxury and tradition, making for an unforgettable stay.

Where to Get Them

You can book a houseboat in several ways. Many tourists opt to go through their resort or hotel, which often have partnerships with reputable houseboat operators.

Alternatively, you can book directly through various online platforms or even walk up to the Alleppey jetty where you'll find numerous operators ready to show you their boats.

The cost of a houseboat stay can vary widely depending on the level of luxury you're looking for.

A basic one-bedroom boat can start at around ₹7,000 per night, while a high-end, luxury boat can cost upwards of ₹20,000. Most prices include meals, and some even offer additional activities like fishing or village tours.

Facts You Should Know

• Booking in Advance : Especially during peak season, houseboats get booked quickly. It's wise to book at least a month in advance.
• Inclusions : Make sure to check what's included in the price. Some operators include all meals and activities, while others might charge extra.
• Safety : Ensure the boat you're booking has proper safety measures in place, including life jackets and fire extinguishers.
• Timings : Most houseboats start their journey in the afternoon and return the next morning, covering various points in between.

Alternatives to Houseboats

Alternatively you could stay in a lake-view cottage or homestay. But why would you do that when you have a floating house full of luxury? I'll give you two reasons.

Anyway, you are not going to sail in the houseboat for all night. By law, they should be anchored by 5:30 pm. Stay in a lakeview cottage with all the luxurious amenities, infinity pools, gardens right at the banks of the lake or canals. Your one-night's tariff is slashed by almost 30%.

While a homestay may not give you the pool and jacuzzi, it gives you rich cultural experience and home-cooked food.

The second reason is the ease of exploring the backwaters. Houseboats are large and it is difficult to maneuver through the labyrinth of canals paving their way through picturesque villages. So hire a shikara instead of houseboat for your backwater tour.

2. A 5-Hour Tour of the Backwaters

How will you cover so many places in one day? A 5-hour backwater tour is the short answer to it. If you are short on time, you can take a 3-hour boat tour as well and after that go on a short drive.

You have many options for this tour.

First, you can arrange a private tour through the resort where you're staying . This is an excellent choice for those looking for a more intimate experience. The tariff for a private tour generally starts at ₹3,000 for a couple and can go up depending on the amenities offered.

Your second option is to hop on one of the larger boats that carry 10-15 people. This is a more budget-friendly choice, with prices ranging from ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 per person. These bigger boats offer a communal experience that's great for meeting other travelers.

As for the routes, most tours start from the Alleppey jetty and can take you through a variety of scenic spots.

Popular routes include sailing through Kuttanad, known as the “Rice Bowl of Kerala,” and making a stop at Pathiramanal Island, a haven for birdwatchers.

Here's everything else you can do besides relaxing and experiencing the sheet joy of being in the cradle of nature.

3. Photography at Vembanad Lake

Vembanad Lake is the longest brackish water lake in India . The largest one is Chilika Lake in Odisha – the largest lagoon in the planet.

From kingfishers and egrets to cormorants and kites, the avian life here is rich and diverse.

Many houseboats and shikara operators offer binoculars and even have local guides who can help you identify the different species.

4. Fresh Seafood Lunch at a Village on the Backwaters

One of the highlights of any backwaters tour in Alleppey is the lunch stop, usually at a quaint village along the route.

Most tours will dock at a village in Kuttanad .

Imagine feasting on dishes like Karimeen Pollichathu (pearl spot fish marinated in spices and grilled in banana leaves) or Alleppey Fish Curry, all while taking in the scenic beauty around you.

Some operators even offer the option to dine at a local's home, giving you a taste of authentic Keralan hospitality.

5. Explore Paddy Fields Below Sea-Level at Kuttanad

Kuttanad, often referred to as the “Rice Bowl of Kerala,” is a must-visit spot on your Alleppey backwaters tour. What makes this region truly unique is its paddy fields, which are situated below sea level.

It's one of the few places in the world where farming is done up to 2 meters below sea level. The only other place where such farms exist is Netherlands , to the best of my knowledge.

As your boat glides through the backwaters, you'll notice vast stretches of green paddy fields separated by narrow strips of land or waterways.

The intricate network of canals and waterways in Kuttanad is used for both irrigation and transportation, making it a fascinating example of how humans have adapted to their environment.

During your lunch stop or at designated points on your tour, you'll have the opportunity to step off the boat and walk through these fields.

6. Triveni Floating Market in Kuttanad

Heard of the floating market of Bangkok? Well, the one in Kerala is no less bustling.

While on the boat, request your sailor to take you to the to Triveni floating market in Kutanad. This state-owned market operates entirely on the boats and is a vital supply chain for the remote areas of the islands.

It's an experience that adds a layer of authenticity to your Alleppey trip, allowing you to engage with the local culture. You might also get products at cheaper rate here because of they are state-owned.

Most tourist boats don't have this market on their standard itinerary. However, if you're hiring a private tour, you can certainly request a stop at the Triveni Floating Market.

Details to Note

The market operates from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, giving you ample time to explore and shop.

7. Visit Pathiramanal Island

Next stop that's included in all popular boat tours is the Pathiramanal Island.

Pathiramanal, which means “sands of the night,” is an uninhabited island that's a lively sojourn of migratory birds all over the world.

Once you're on the island, you can take a leisurely walk through the woods, try to identify the bird-species, or simply sit by the lake and enjoy the natural beauty around you.

Don't forget to bring your camera ; the island is a photographer's paradise.

The island is open to visitors from sunrise to sunset. It's advisable to visit during the early morning or late afternoon for the best bird-watching experience.

8. Visit Chavara Bhavan

Chavara Bhavan is another must-visit spot on your Alappuzha itinerary. This ancestral home of saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara is now a spiritual shrine for the people of Kerala.

Besides being a Syro-Malabar Catholic priest, he was a great social reformer who spearheaded numerous initiatives to make education universally accessible.

Located on the banks of the Pamba River, you can reach this place only by boat. The house is preserved as a museum where you can see ancient artifacts and scriptures.

The highlight is the 250-year-old “Beemapally Chandanakudam” , a lamp that has been burning continuously since its first lighting.

The place is open to visitors from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. There's no entry fee, but donations are accepted. It's a peaceful and enriching experience that adds a spiritual dimension to your Alleppey tour.

9. Punnamada Lake

One of the most scenic spots you'll encounter on your 5-hour boat trip is Punnamada Lake. This expansive water body is famous for hosting the annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race, one of the most celebrated events in Kerala.

As you sail through, you'll be captivated by the panoramic views of lush greenery and traditional Kerala houseboats. It's also a great spot for photography, so make sure your camera is ready.

Most boat tours start or/and end from this point.

While the lake is open for exploration throughout the day, the best time to experience its beauty is during the early morning or late afternoon. There's no additional fee for visiting the lake as it's usually included in your boat tour package.

10. Alleppey Lighthouse Museum

You private boat tour will probably end at your resort where you are staying. If not you can ask them to drop you at the Nehru Trophy finishing point. Most group tours have a drop-point here.

From this point, hire a tuktuk and head straight to the Alleppey Lighthouse which is just 10 minutes away.

The museum isn't just about the lighthouse; it's a tribute to the maritime history of the region. You can explore various exhibits that delve into the life and times of sailors, the evolution of lighthouses, and much more.

It offers a spectacular panoramic view from the top, so paying Rs. 20 extra for carrying the camera inside is worth it.

The museum is open every day from 9:00 am to 11:45 pm and then again from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm. So, you might be pressed for time here after the afternoon boat tour.

The entry fee is Rs. 10 for Indians and Rs. 25 for foreigners. Camera charges are extra.

11. Vijaya Beach Park & Alleppey Beach

After this you can walk to the Vijaya Beach Park and Alleppey Beach. Vijaya beach park is a beautified children's park near the Alleppey Beach, making it a perfect family-spot.

The park features a wide range of amenities like boating, a toy train, and even a Japanese garden. It's a great place for families, especially if you're traveling with kids. The children can enjoy the play area while the adults can take a leisurely boat ride.

Watch the sunset, enjoy the activities and walk along the clean and lively Alleppey beach to end your day.

12. Authentic Kerala Cuisine For Dinner

We end this wholesome day of our Alleppey 2-day itinerary with a sumptuous authentic Malayali cuisine for dinner.

As the day draws to a close, retire for a good night's sleep. We still have the time to soak in the best of Alleppey on the day of our departure.

13. Watch Sunrise at the Vembanad Lake

On my first trip to Alleppey, we were so tired after driving all the way from Bangalore that we slept at 9pm! And I woke up before sunrise to catch the early morning views. It was mesmerizing!

14. Mulakkal Rajarajeshwari Temple

Situated just a few kilometers from the main town of Alleppey in Mulakkal, the Mulakkal Rajarajeshwari Temple is a revered sanctuary dedicated to Goddess Rajarajeshwari. The origin of this 500-year-old temple is wrapped in many legends.

The temple is particularly famous for the festival ”  Mullakkal Chirappu ” which happens between November to January. During this time, the temple becomes a hub of cultural activities, including classical dance performances and ritualistic ceremonies.

The month-long festival ends with a grand parade of caparisoned elephants in the last two days. Thousands of devotees and tourists come to witness this spectacle from all over Kerala and beyond.

This is typical of many temple-festivals of Kerala and a sight to witness.

15. Visit Mararikulam Mahadeva Temple

I didn't know about it until I came across this lofty statue of Shiva on my way to the Marari beach. It's a narrow road to drive to the beach, so finding a parking spot can be difficult. So park your car and walk to the beach after a trip to this temple.

Mararikulam Mahadeva Temple is a hidden gem located in Alappuzha district, Kerala. Built around 700 years ago by Villimangalam Swami, the temple is a sanctuary for two deities of Shiva—Vadakkanappan and Thekkanappan.

The biggest festival in this temple is “ Thiru Utsavam ” held in February every year. Like in Mulakkal, this 10-day festival is also celebrated with traditional music, dance, carnival and elephant parade.

16. Enjoy a coconut at Marari Beach

One of my favorite beaches in India, Marari Beach is named after Mararikulam, a local fishing village, and it retains much of its original character.

This picturesque beach is also a nesting ground for Olive Ridley turtles ! You could spend hours in this setting, but it's time for departure, so sip on some coconut water while enjoying soaking some vitamin sea.

17. St. Andrew's Basilica – A Pit Stop on Your Way to Kochi

If you're driving back to Kochi , St. Andrew's Basilica in Arthunkal is one last place to stop by. This basilica is not just a place of worship but a historical marvel.

Raised by the Portuguese missionaries in early16th century, the church was rebuilt in 1584 under the guidance of Jacomo Fenicio, an Italian Jesuit. It is renowned for its grand annual feast of St. Sebastian in January, attracting pilgrims all over the country.

The architecture of the basilica is a blend of Portuguese style and local elements. It was elevated to the status of a basilica on July 9, 2010, making it the first basilica in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Alleppey.

The church faces west, offering a serene view of the long white-sand beach on the shores of the Arabian Sea.

Other Places to Visit in Alleppey if You Have One More Night

If you have just one more night at Alleppey, there's so much more to see. For the day of departure, I've included a few spots that are conveniently on the same route at a short distance from each other.

18. St Mary's Forane Church at Valiyapalli

Dating back to the 16th century, St Mary's Forane Church at Valiyapalli is one of the oldest churches in India. A pristine white monument by the lake, this is one of the most beautiful religious sites in Alleppey.

The church is renowned for its beautiful murals and sculptures, as well as its altar made of a single piece of wood. It's not just a place of worship but also a work of art.

The church is open to visitors from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

19. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Drive to the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary on the second day. Kumarakom is rapidly gaining popularity as an offbeat alternative to Alleppey on the other side of Vembanad Lake.

Developed initially as a rubber plantation by Englishman George Alfred Baker, the sanctuary was formerly known as Baker's Estate.

Now managed by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation, the sanctuary spans 14 acres on the southern bank of the Meenachil River.

20. Kayaking In Backwaters

Kayaking tours can be booked at multiple locations in Alleppey, including popular resorts and specialized tour operators near the backwaters. Some of the well-known spots are near Punnamada Lake and the starting points of houseboat cruises. You can also find options online or through travel agencies.

No prior kayaking experience is required for most tours. Beginners are usually given a brief training session before heading out on the water. However, if you're looking for something more challenging, there are advanced routes available for experienced kayakers.

Safety is a priority on these tours. All participants are provided with life jackets, and guides often carry first-aid kits. The kayaks used are generally stable and designed for both beginners and experienced paddlers. Some tours even have a support boat that follows the kayakers to ensure safety.

More in the Kerala Backwaters

Alleppey is a place to relax and go back to simpler times. While you can see a lot in one backwater tour in one day, it's also one of the best places for slow travel.

If you have a longer time in this region, you can save money by adopting the fascinating local lifestyle. Use the public boats, rent a bike to travel around, go for grocery shopping and cook your own meals. Tempting, isn't it?

Here are my top picks for things to do in Alleppey on a longer trip.

21. Take a Public Ferry to Kollam

If you're looking for a budget-friendly way to explore the backwaters, consider taking a public ferry from Alleppey to Kollam.

The journey takes around 8 hours and offers a different perspective of the backwaters. It's a local experience, complete with stops at small villages along the way.

The ferry usually departs from the Alleppey Boat Jetty and tickets can be purchased on-site.

22. Village Tour of Champakulam

Champakulam is a quaint village situated on the banks of the Pamba River.

It's famous for its annual snake boat race and the St. Mary's Forane Church, one of the oldest Christian churches in India.

The village is accessible by boat and road, and a tour here offers a glimpse into the traditional crafts of boat building and idol making.

23. Trek to Pandavan Rock

For those looking to add a bit of adventure to their trip, a trek to Pandavan Rock is a great option.

Located near Urukunnu, this rock is believed to have been a hiding place for the Pandavas during their exile.

The trek is moderate and takes about an hour to reach the top, where you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Best time to visit Alleppey

I recommend visiting Alleppey in the period between November and February. In fact, Alleppey is one of the best places to visit in India in winter .

The temperature of this typically Hot and Humid (with a capital “H”) area is slightly cooler during the time making it ideal for exploring. Also, this is the peak time for bird-watching in the Vembanad Lake. Migratory birds from around the world throng into coastal India for a little warmth. The lake also features seasonal blossoms that add an extra layer of beauty.

However, if you're keen on experiencing the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, an annual cultural event that turns the peaceful backwaters into a competitive racetrack, you'll want to plan your visit for August.

How To Reach Alleppey?

Getting to Alleppey is relatively straightforward, with multiple options available. I drove from Bangalore, and the journey was a breeze, taking around 9 hours via the NH 44 and NH 66. This is one of the best routes for scenic road trips from Bangalore.

However, if you're coming from Kochi, be prepared for some traffic delays, especially during peak hours. Kochi is a bustling cosmopolitan city, and the traffic situation can be challenging.

Kochi is the nearest city to Alleppey and serves as a major gateway for travelers. It's well-connected by air, with the Cochin International Airport offering flights from various domestic and international locations. The city is also accessible by train, with the Ernakulam Junction being the closest major railway station.

If you're coming from nearby cities like Trivandrum, Madurai, or Coimbatore, there are daily buses that run to Kochi. From Kochi, Alleppey is just a short drive away, approximately 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic.

Alleppey looks like an amazomg area. I love the look of those sunsets, the lakes, the temple and well, everything! I’d really like to try Karimeen Fry now! That looks so, sooo tasty!

Ultimate Alleppey Backwaters of Kerala Guide – Boats, Toddy, Temples & More!

Cruising down the Alleppey Backwaters of Kerala is a must-do for any traveller visiting India! 

There is nothing more iconic than floating down the canal ways with palm trees swaying either side. Watching the locals and waving to the other boats as you cruise down the river in the sunshine. 

But, if you’re unfamiliar with Kerala in general, it can be hard to know where the backwaters are and how to explore them while you’re here. 

So, in this detailed guide to the backwaters of Kerala, I’ll take you through what they are, where best to access them, what boat to choose with prices and things to do on the backwaters of Kerala too!

What and where are the backwaters of Kerala? 

The backwaters of Kerala are HUGE. There are over 900 kilometres of canals and it’s a natural phenomenon. 

They are a network of lagoons, lakes, canals, rivers, and inlets that run through Kerala and feed from the Arabian Sea or Malabar Coast. It’s almost a labyrinth of waterways in amongst the jungle.

The easiest, cheapest, and best way to access the backwaters of Kerala is from Alleppey or Alappuzha (the current name). But, you can also access them from different areas in Kerala too.

Kuttanad backwaters are the most popular and this is where I would suggest you explore to see the best of it. As you’ll have a great range of Toddy shacks, temples, churches, and some amazing views too while you sail around. 

What is the best time to visit Kerala and the Alleppey backwaters?

The best time to visit Kerala would be in the peak season from October – March. At this time the weather is a lot cooler but you will get most of the crowds too! 

Kerala is one of the most popular destinations in India, so you’re looking at hiked-up prices during this period. 

April – June is the summer months which are extremely hot and temperatures can be in the mid-late 40s. Plus much of the backwaters would be quite dry.

Another time to consider visiting would be from July – September during Monsoon. Although you will experience heavy rainfall most days, the backwaters will be lush and green! 

Even when I was here post most monsoon in early October, it was very humid, with some light showers as the heavy monsoon had just passed. But, the greenery was stunning!

How long do I need in Alleppey? 

Honestly? I would say you only really need one to one and a half days in Alleppey. Any more and it will feel like you’re seeing the same thing over and over again!

There are some beaches that you can stand on with the locals (Kerala isn’t a place for sunbathing all day) and you can take a boat ride out on the backwaters. But, after that, I think you’ll be struggling to find more things to do.

What boat do I choose to explore the Alleppey backwaters of Kerala?

What boat you choose entirely depends on your budget and what you want to see. You can go all the way from incredibly expensive houseboats with all the trimmings, to rowing yourself in a traditional wooden canoe. 

A big houseboat is great as it has facilities like a toilet and a kitchen to prepare lunch but it’s also restricted to the crowded main waterways. Whereas, a Shikara or canoe boat can squeeze through some of the offbeat canals and has seats and sunbeds too. 

As I was on my own and didn’t plan on staying the night in a houseboat, my homestay booked me a Shikara boat for my adventures in the Alleppey backwaters.

If you’re on the fence, I’d choose this as it’s less expensive and you can cover more ground! 

You don’t have to book your houseboat in advance, it is possible to do this while you’re here. But, I’ve included some links in case you’re the A-Type who likes to have things booked.

This is what most tourists opt for when they visit the Alleppey backwaters. They are essentially a floating hotel. This will be the most expensive option to travel along the backwaters. 

You can choose to take a day trip on the backwaters of Kerala in a houseboat or stay overnight in one too.

But, you should know now that not all houseboats are created equal!

Some are budget with very limited facilities and go all the way up to a luxury houseboat with bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, and a sundeck lounge area.

Prices range from 4,000 rupees (£42/$55) for a 6/7 hour day tour to 20,000 rupees (£220/$250) for a stay overnight depending on your package and the boat. Always check terms and conditions to see what is included like meals etc.

Shikara Boats 

This is what I went for and I LOVED it! It’s a lot cheaper than a houseboat and as you’re in a smaller vessel you can cruise through the smaller more offbeat canals. 

A Shikara is a wooden boat that actually originates from Jammu and Kashmir and can most commonly be found in Srinagar on Dal Lake. It has seats, a big bed to lie on, a cover to keep you shaded and dry and an engine to cruise. 

Another great reason to hire a Shikara is that you can hire them by the hour. So, it makes it a lot cheaper. 

I’d recommend sailing for at least 2-3 hours minimum so you can cover some ground. Any less and you won’t see very much. 

Shikara boat prices in Alleppey start from around 600-2000 INR per hour depending on the boat. A smaller boat means a lesser price.

So, if you have some friends you could split the cost between you and cruise for however long you like. You can definitely negotiate the price with the boatman if you plan to sail for the day.

Canoes 

Canoes, or the traditional country boats in Kerala, are how people have been getting around here for centuries! 

Many people live in the middle of the backwaters and some have no choice but to travel in these daily. 

I travelled over to my homestay in a traditional country boat and it is a little bit of a balancing act! But, it’s also really fun and more of a local way to travel which is always an experience.

You can go on canoe tours where you row yourself, or you can hire one with a rider who has an engine so you can explore more places. It’s entirely up to you. 

This is a great option if there is only one or two of you and if you’re rowing, you’re protecting the environment too!

Public Ferries

If you’re backpacking on a shoestring budget and you can’t justify the cost of a private charter, then the public ferries will be your best way to go.

This is how the locals get around the backwaters and it still gives you a chance to take in the views and explore the area too. As a bonus, travelling with others is also more environmentally friendly!

There are ferry stops all along the main Alappuzha canal that stop at temples, churches, toddy shacks, and access the mainland too. You’ll see the stops as they are black and white striped. 

They’re written in Malayalam but they stop at each one regardless of anyone calling out. So, if you like the look of what you see, hop-off. There will be public ferries that go in different directions outside of Alleppey too. 

This option will need a lot more time to explore, so make sure you start out early if you want to cover a few places.

If you’re more of the active type, you could opt to choose a kayaking tour of the backwaters! 

This was something I considered at first but, to me, Alleppey meant to rest, Ayurveda, and relaxation to end my trip – but, I know that isn’t for everyone!

You can simply rent Kayaks here without a guide for around 1000-1500 rupees for four hours. 

Or, can do a guided sunrise tour, sunset tour, or spend the whole day in your Kayak on the backwaters which include lunch. Or, spend 2-3 days kayaking with hotels, the choice is yours.

Things to do on the Alleppey Backwaters of Kerala

So, once you’ve chosen your boat. Now, all that’s left to do is cruise the backwaters and go sightseeing!

Some of my best memories of Alleppey were from my boat ride on the backwaters so I know that you’ll have an awesome time. 

Everything from the views, to meeting the locals, enjoying the food, and stopping for Toddy will make a great day out. 

Take in the amazing views

The views here are what most people come for on the Alleppey backwaters and I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed. 

The Kuttanad Backwaters are the main area where you can see the life that goes on in this part of the world. 

You’ll pass churches, temples, locals collecting water, fishing boats, toddy shacks (more on that later), and lots and lots of palm trees. I couldn’t get enough of the amazing views around here and seeing others on their houseboats. 

The reason why I loved my Shikara ride was that we got to head into the smaller canals to see the smaller villages, houses, and float into the dense jungle. We got to go deeper into the maze and float by lakes and lagoons too.

Go temple hopping 

South India has a plethora of different religions due to the colourful colonial history of the area. Kerala is no exception to that!

On your way through the backwaters of Kerala, you’ll see lots of Catholic churches, Hindu temples, and Islamic Mosques. 

You can stop off to explore some of these temples or you can float by and admire them from the water. 

It’s good to note that some Hindu temples here do not allow foreigners inside. 

I loved stopping off at St Joseph’s church and some of the Hindu temples that had been here for centuries. It’s hard to believe sometimes that these buildings have been used for worship for hundreds of years and still stand today. 

Pop into a Toddy shop!

Toddy is something you must try here in Kerala! It’s a type of palm wine that is sourced directly from palm trees. 

If you’re lucky enough, you may be able to see some of the local’s toddy tapping. They climb the tree and make a hole in the flower of the tree. Then they tie a pot to the top and collect the sap.

This sap naturally ferments with the yeast in the air and within a few hours, they will have a liquid that is sweet to taste with a 4-6% alcohol content!

If you want to try Toddy for yourself ask your boatman to stop at a Toddy shop. These aren’t fancy but will have a lot of locals enjoying palm wine after a long day’s work.

I will warn you not to consume too much if you’re not used to it. It can irritate your stomach and they sometimes use local water.

Stop for a delectable lunch

At some point, you’re going to get hungry, so I would definitely recommend that you stop off for some lunch on your way around.

South Indian food is mouthwateringly good and in Kerala they often serve curry on a banana leaf. It’s like your typical Thali that comes with a pile of rice and a variety of curries and chutneys to enjoy with it!

There are plenty of restaurants on the backwaters and if you’re on a tour that includes lunch you’ll be taken to the one that they partner with or recommend. 

But, if you want some recommendations, popular restaurants include ‘A Tasty Land’, ‘A Taste of India’, and ‘Aatumukham Restaurant & Toddy Shop’.

Where to stay in Alleppey Backwaters of Kerala 

If you’re planning on staying the night in Alleppey, then why not stay over in the backwaters themselves? 

It’s far less crowded and touristy than the hotels in Alappuzha and gives you a chance to unwind in peace.

Emerald Isle Heritage Villa is a 150-year-old farmhouse that is still owned by the original owner’s great-great-grandson. It has been converted into a boutique homestay with a few unique rooms. It’s the ideal place for travellers looking to escape for a few days. 

As well as a tasty restaurant that prepares local meals, they also have an Ayurvedic spa and 9 acres of farmland to explore. So, you can chill in a hammock, take a swim in the backwaters and see their spice farm too!

Other things to do in Alleppey other than the backwaters

If you’re done exploring the Alleppey backwaters of Kerala and wanted to do something on the mainland, there is a lot more to explore! 

As I was on limited time, I actually explored the main strip of Alappuzha beach on my road trip back down from Munnar and then headed straight over the river into the backwaters to my hotel.

Alleppey city & beach is where you’ll find the most guesthouses and hostels if you’re looking for budget accommodation. 

The Zostel in Alleppey is recommended. Although I don’t personally stay in hostels very much anymore, I have stayed in a Zostel in the past and they are great options for meeting other travellers (and that way you can share boat fees too!). 

Alleppey Beach

Alappuzha or Alleppey beach is one of the cleaner beaches I’ve visited by Indian standards and that’s saying a lot. But, there is still signs of rubbish and, as there are cows and dogs on the beach, they leave their crap which doesn’t get cleaned up.

Although in the West, we visit the beach to sunbathe around 10 foot apart from another party and lie down in a bikini. In India, you don’t really do that a lot.

Most of the locals on Alappuzha beach will be stood at the shoreline in massive crowds, paddling in the waves. There will be hardly anyone actually lying on the beach. 

So, if you want to see the ocean, I’d join the crowds. It will be noisy with a lifeguard whistling but it’s lovely to watch the sunset and cool your feet down. 

Alappuzha Lighthouse 

Another awesome stop in the area is Alappuzha lighthouse. 

It was originally built in 1862 as a navigational aid to help traders pulling into the harbour. But, today it’s a popular attraction as a viewpoint where you can get birds-eye views of the whole area. 

As it’s 30 metres high, you can climb up their old teak staircase and get views of the beach and jungle – plus an amazing breeze!

Entry is 50 rupees for foreigners and there is also a small lighthouse museum included in your ticket.

This isn’t the most accessible attraction and can be a little bit of a sweaty scrum so make sure you read my guide on what to expect before you climb!

Where else are you headed in Kerala?

Of course, Alleppey is the most popular spot in Kerala but did you know that there is so much more to Kerala than the backwaters?! 

There is the historic Fort Kochi, and the hill station of Munnar which gives a great mix of history, culture, viewpoints, and relaxation.

Fort Kochi 

Fort Kochi is a cultural hub here in Kerala and has such a diverse range of historical and cultural attractions to enjoy. 

You can see some of the ‘real’ Kerala by visiting the locals at Dhobi Khana laundry house or climb aboard the Chinese Fishing nets to help the fishermen to reel in the catch of the day. 

Or, you can hop around Portuguese churches, Dutch palaces, Paradesi Synagogues, and Indo-Catholic Cathedrals!

It’s also a great place to watch a traditional Kathakali performance too.

Pondicherry

Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport to both of these cities.

There is no direct flight from Munnar to Alleppey as they are very close

The only way to get from the airport to Alleppey is by cab, private charter bus, or a public KSRTC bus.

Aluva Railway Station and Madurai Railway Station are the nearest train stations to Munnar.

You can catch a train from either of these stations to reach Alappuzha Rail Junction in Alleppey.

It takes about 2-3 hours to get from Munnar to Alleppey by train depending on the number of stops.

Cabs are readily available from the train station to take you to Munnar and other places. You can also board a private Volvo or a KSRTC government bus from the Alappuzha Bus Terminal next to the railway station.

Your time in Kerala is going to split between exploring the beautiful surrounding nature, complete with elephants, eating great food, perhaps a cooking class, and relaxing.

The following is an overview of various activities you could undertake and ways to get around Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey and Kochi. The list is not comprehensive and we highly recommend using a guide book and tips from your hotel/homestay in addition to this outline.

The highlight of Munnar is the gorgeous views of the surrounding valleys filled with trees and tea plantations. Munnar is more of a see and relax town, than having active things to do.

In terms of activities, you could still do a forest trek or ride/bath elephants. You would want to take advice of your homestay or hotel while planning these activities.

Getting around Munnar

You will need a vehicle to get around Munnar. Most of the points of interest are a generous distance apart and cannot easily be reached on foot. If we have rented a car for your entire time in Kerala, you can use this at no additional cost. Else your hotel/homestay can arrange for a car at approx INR 1,200-1,500 for a day. You could also get around Munnar by hiring a bike/scooter.

Things to do in Munnar

• You could spend time visiting the Eravikulam National Park in Munnar. The Nilgiri Thar (mountain goat) can be spotted fairly easily here. It is a pretty spot where you’d spend a little over an hour. The bird sightings are good but don’t expect to spot any spectacular wildlife such as tigers or leopards.
• Visit the scenic Mettuppey Dam and the Sandal Wood forests. There are also many waterfalls in and around Munnar such as Lakkam and Attukal waterfalls.
• You certainly want to visit a tea plantation and the Tata Tea Museum. Your hosts in Munnar, as predominantly you are in a homestay, are the best source of information for interesting activities to do.

Pretty in its own right and by the edge of the Periyar National Park, Thekkady in Kerala offers a lot more active things to do. For adventure enthusiasts the Periyar National Park provides a number of adventure activities like light treks, heavy forest treks or day rafting.

Getting around Thekkady

It is difficult to reach all the spots in Thekkady on foot. Again, if you have rented a car you can use that, else you should use a Tuk-Tuk – a much cheaper option than hiring a car for a day and can reach all spots. It will be roughly INR 400-700 for a day and can be arranged through your hotel.

Things to do in Thekkady

Here is a list of things to do with an overview compiled by the owners of Indhrivanam.

• One can ride and bathe elephants at Elephant Junction. Or you can take a spice plantation tour, which is pretty educational, and see the traditional dance and martial arts show.
• Over and above Thekkady too is a very relaxing place to take it slow and enjoy the views. One can particularly enjoy the traditional Indian dance and martial arts show at the cultural centre. Both last for about an hour – do not miss it!

The highlight experience of Alleppey in Kerala is its backwaters. Take an overnight houseboat or a day cruise or for a few hours riding along the backwaters and viewing normal day life along the banks.

Getting around Alleppey

Take an autorickshaw or a bus from the town centre to where you would like to go. The journey from Alleppey railway station to downtown is only 10-15 minutes and will cost about INR 50-60. Buses also run and are a cheap mode of travel, but Alleppey is quite small and going around on foot is far more enjoyable. Or you could consider hiring a bike/scooter from a reliable source.

Things to do in Alleppey

• Accommodation options are spread along the backwaters in Alleppey. It does not offer any principle attractions, apart from the backwaters itself. You would have to speak to your hotel/homestay for additional activities.
• Virtually all of them can arrange for a backwaters cruise if you are not spending a night on a houseboat. They can also arrange for cycles to roam around the countryside or guided farm walks to explore the fields.
• Alleppey is also extremely close to the coast so ask your host to direct you towards the beach if you wish to spend time there.

Kochi in Kerala is a quaint town, oozing with old world charm by the sea. The experience is just exploring the place on foot.

Getting Around Kochi

Kochi is just off the mainland and ferries are the fastest mode of transport. They run from Ernakalum and will take you to the main ferry port in Kochi. There are also tuk-tuks that will take you from Ernakalum station to catch the ferry.

Things to do in Kochi

• There is an array of sightseeing in Kochi. You can visit the Synagogues, see the Chinese fishing nets and buy dinner at the fish markets. Stop by one of the lovely cafes and enjoy South Indian cuisine, or ask your hosts to direct you to find a cooking class.
• Explore the old Portuguese and Dutch colonial buildings and churches such as St Francis Church, David Hall and Mattancherry Palace.
• Kochi also has a cultural centre where you can catch the traditional Indian dance you should not miss!

So you think that travel to Alleppey is JUST about the backwaters?!

Okay, that might be a big part.

But, should it be in and out of Alleppey in one day?!

Because what else is there to do in Alleppey besides the backwaters, right?!

Okay, so it CAN be just one day in Alleppey…

And it can also be longer!

It depends on what you’re looking for!

If you have just a short one week in Kerala , then you may not want to spend any more time in Alleppey than just your Kerala backwaters activity of choice.

It’s true, much of it does revolve around the backwaters.

But, you are in Alleppey, the major travel destination of the Kerala backwaters , so you need to soak in all the backwaters that you can get, right?!

But there are a few more things to do in Alleppey beyond the backwaters so you can take in the Kerala atmosphere, if you’re looking for more!

That means that if you’ve been backpacking around India for a month or longer, and you’re looking for a place to kind of rest up for a few days, Alleppey can also be a perfect place to do so.

And in the case you really only want to spend ONE day in Alleppey, here are ideas on how to make the most of it!

What to do when in Alleppey and the Kerala backwaters?!

It’s all about…

How to fit this into a one day Alleppey itinerary?!

So to get the most out of one day in Alleppey, it will be best to stay in Alleppey for 2 nights.

Maybe you’ll arrive from Fort Cochin , from Munnar , from Thekkady , or from Varkala .

See some tips on how to get to Alleppey by public transportation .

You can take it easy in the evening, and then the next day, be ready for a full day of activities!

Then, the day after that, off you go to your next destination in Kerala !

The first part of this itinerary can be EASY because…

Alleppey backwaters village tour!

The easiest way to fit a bunch of the best things to do in the Kerala backwaters is by going for a village canoe tour.

The going rate for these kinds of Alleppey canoe tours is around 1,000 rupees (US$15).

And if the above activities sound good to you, this can be worth it so you can get a bunch of different experiences in the Alleppey backwaters in a limited amount of time.

And then for the second part of the itinerary…

After your backwaters day tour

First you’ll want to make sure you stay at a guesthouse with a kitchen where you can prepare your own food!

Then after you get back from your canoe tour, you can buy the stuff you need for the rest of your evening (food and drinks) when you’re in town.

The Alleppey ferry station is in town, so instead of heading straight back to your guesthouse, you can make a few stops along the way.

So a canoe backwaters tour typically starts around 8am, and it’ll take you through around 3-4pm.

Once you get back to the Alleppey ferry station, there are a couple of grocery stores in town that you can do your shopping at, and you can also find some places along the street that sell seafood (and other food).

It could be good to ask your guesthouse staff the best place to buy seafood before you leave for your backwaters tour in the morning, or the evening before.

And then for your Kerala rum (or beer if you prefer), you can also buy in town at the government beverage shop .

Going to buy the rum can be an experience on its own if you end up there at a time with long lines. Consider it to be a very local experience. 😉

For near guarantees of shorter waiting time, you can head to  Harbour Bar near Alleppey Beach . The prices here will be higher though. (You can carry the alcohol out with you, but make sure to bring a backpack or bag to carry it out in.)

For the coconut so that you can complete your rum and coconut water drink, this could also be a good thing to ask your guesthouse so you can buy it from near where you’re staying.

If you don’t want to have to break open the coconut on your own when you’re back at your guesthouse (it’s quite a task and you’ll need to make sure the tools are available), then you’ll want to ask the coconut shop staff to crack it and open up a hole for you.  But you’ll have to carry the coconut back carefully!

Alternatively, you could always buy packaged coconut water from the grocery store… but of course fresh coconut water is better. 😉

If you want to be DONE after the backwaters tour?!

If preparing your own food and drinks sounds like too much work when you’re traveling 😉 you can head to some of the best restaurants in Alleppey .

Leaving Alleppey in the evening for the rest of your Kerala backpacking trip

Or if you want to leave Alleppey right away because you’re short on time with only a few days in Kerala , it could make sense to leave to go to Cochin or Varkala.

• Alleppey to Cochin

There are plenty of buses that run from Alleppey to Cochin, so you’ll have no problem just showing up at the Alleppey bus station and getting on the next bus to Cochin.

Alleppey to Varkala

To Varkala , you might find a few evening trains that you can catch.

If you don’t mind traveling in a general class train, you can simply show up at the train station, buy your ticket, and then board the next train to Varkala .

But if Varkala is your next destination, you should totally consider waiting until the next day so you can take the Kollam tourist ferry part of the way to get there!

Because the journey is so much better when it includes the Kerala backwaters. 😉

Alleppey to Munnar and to Thekkady

You can go by bus to the Kerala hills starting in the afternoon too.

But it might not be the most ideal bus situation, as there might not be a direct bus. (You can generally find direct buses to Munnar and to Thekkady earlier in the day.)

And because of the late start, along with the necessary bus transfers, you’ll likely be arriving to your next destination late.

If you decide to wait until the next day to head to the Kerala hills, be sure to check out the option of getting there in part by the Kottayam ferry !

About this 1-week Kerala Itinerary

This 1-week Kerala Itinerary will take you to some of the most beautiful and famous spots in Kerala to ensure that you uncover the best of what this state has to offer in this short amount of time. 

It will also ensure that you have enough time to relax as well as to account for travel time between each destination. 

Your Itinerary will look like this: 

• Days 1-3 Varkala 
• Days 4-5 Alleppey 

Days 6-7 Fort Kochi 

Arrival – How To Get To Kerala 

This itinerary starts in Varkala, which is found in southern Kerala,  so you have 2 options when deciding how to get there. 

Option 1 

You can fly to Cochin International Airport and then catch a train from central Kochi down to Varkala. 

The train departs from Ernakulam Junction Station and takes approximately 5 hours. 

To get to the station from the airport, you will need to catch a taxi/Uber. This journey is about 30 minutes and should cost you $15-$20.

You can check out the IRCTC website and 12go Asia to book your train from Ernakulam Junction to Varkala.

Option 2 

You can fly to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport which is much closer to Varkala. 

From the airport, you can order a taxi which will take 45 minutes and cost approximately $30. 

Alternatively, you can catch a train from Thiruvananthapuram Central Station. The journey from the airport to the station is approximately 10 minutes and you can either catch a public bus or a taxi. 

The train journey from Thiruvananthapuram Central to Varkala takes just over an hour.

Days 1-3 – Varkala Cliff 

Varkala is Kerala’s most popular coastal town located on the shores of the Arabian Sea. 

Varkala is split into 2 sides, North Varkala and South Varkala. 

The North side tends to be more touristy, whilst the South side offers a more cultural “village” style experience. 

It’s the perfect place to enjoy yoga, surfing, delicious food and of course lots of relaxation. 

Where to stay in Varkala 

There are lots of nice hotels in Varkala that are all very reasonably priced some of my favourite hotels in Varakala include: 

• Indian ArtVilla – This is a cheap, cheerful and colourful hotel located close to all the bars and restaurants. The rooms here are huge so it’s excellent value for the money you pay. 
• Boho’s Hotel – This is a beautifully decorated mid-range boutique hotel with a central location. I was desperate to stay here during my time in Varkala but it was always fully booked, so I think that says a lot. 
• Point Break Varkala – This hotel is slightly more on the expensive side in comparison to what else you can get in Varkala, but in my opinion, it’s worth it. It’s a small boutique hotel with incredible ocean views, close to the beach and restaurants and breakfast included.

Things to do in Varkala 

Enjoy the beach .

The best thing to do in Varkala is to soak up all the beach time you can because this part of your 1-week Kerala itinerary is all about chilling out. 

There are multiple beaches you can visit in Varkala, most of which are within easy walking distance from each other. 

Some of the best beaches in Varkala include:

• Varkala Beach (North & South Cliff)
• Odayam Beach 
• Edava Beach 
• Kappil Beach

My Personal favourite was Odayam Beach, it’s much quieter and far less touristy than some of the other spots in Varkala. 

The one downside to the beaches in Varkala is just how much litter there is everywhere, it somewhat takes away from just how beautiful this place is. 

Try out surfing 

Varkala is a very popular surfing spot in India and it’s one of the top places in the country to learn.

There are lots of surf schools in Varkala and some of the best ones include: 

• Soul and Surf
• Moana Surf School 
• Ruasta Surf School 

Do some yoga 

Another relaxing activity you can take part in whilst you’re in Varkala is Yoga 

There are a whole host of Yoga schools in Varkala and some of the top ones include:

• Nidra Yoga School 
• Chandra School of Yoga 

You’ll also notice that when you’re walking through town you’ll see many adverts for yoga classes, sound healing and meditation so I would also recommend dropping into these places and see if they take your fancy. 

Enjoy a cooking class 

If you’re looking for an alternative activity during your time in Varkala then this cooking class at the Aryavilla heritage hotel is a great option.

You’ll get the chance to cook 4 different South Indian dishes with a local chef who will teach you all about Indian spices and flavour profiles.

Tailormade clothing 

One of the best things I did during my time in Varkala was to get tailor-made clothes. I think they make the perfect souvenir for your travels. 

I visited the ACTO Tex & Tailoring shop in North Cliff and got 5 pieces of tailor-made clothing for less than $130, which is such good value for money and I am in love with all my pieces. 

Also, I noticed that there were many tailors outside the beach/cliff area. You could probably get cheaper tailor-made clothing if you were happy to explore these options further out of town.

I loved the foodie scene in Varkala, there are so many cafes and restaurants to choose from so you certainly won’t believe Varkala hungry.

Days 4-5 – Alleppey 

Alleppey, in Kerala (also referred to as Alappuzha), is known for its serene backwaters, houseboat cruises, and lush green landscapes. It’s such a peaceful destination that offers beautiful views, traditional villages, and a chance to immerse yourself in nature. 

Alleppey was my favourite place in Kerala so do not skip this off your 1-week Kerala itinerary.

How to get from Varkala to Alleppey 

The journey from Varkala to Alleppey is extremely straightforward. 

You can jump on a direct train from Varkala station to Alappuzha station. The journey is approximately 2 hours. 

You can check out the IRCTC website and 12go Asia to book your train.

Where to stay in Alleppey 

Alleppey is full of small boutique guesthouses and homestays at great prices. 

Some of the best places to stay in Alleppey include: 

• Mom&Pop Thyparambil Heritage – This is a super affordable hotel located in Central Alleppey. The family here are so lovely and the free breakfast is to die for. 
• Malayalam Lake Resort – This hotel offers unparalleled backwater views at extremely affordable prices. You can sit on the terrace and watch the boats pass by all day.
• The Mayflower Heritage Villa – This is another affordable homestay option with large rooms, super-friendly owners and great food!

One of the most popular things to do in Alleppey is to stay on a houseboat. Whilst this is an incredible experience, it can be extremely expensive, the houseboats are also unable to travel through the smaller (and more beautiful) waterways due to their size.

Things to do in Alleppey 

Backwaters cruise .

There really is only one thing you need to do in Alleppey on this 1-week itinerary and it’s a cruise of the Alleppey backwaters. 

This is one of the most magical experiences I have had in my whole life and a day that I will never forget. 

I booked my backwaters cruise through my accommodation Mom&Pop Thyparambil Heritage , but you’ll find that most hotels in Alleppey can book a tour for you.

If you have some spare time whilst in Alleppey then make sure to take a visit to Alappuzha Light House and Alappuzha and Marari beaches. 

Where to eat in Alleppey 

To be completely honest I found the food scene in Alleppey a little lacklustre in comparison to everywhere else I’d been in India but there are a few nice spots which include:

• Halais Restaurant 
• Rice Boat 

Fort Kochi is a historic town in Kerala it is best known for its Dutch and Portuguese colonial architecture and a vibrant art scene. 

How to get from Alleppey to Fort Kochi 

The journey from Alleppey to Fort Kochi is really simple, you can either catch a public bus (2 hours), a train (1 hour) or book a taxi/Uber (50 minutes). 

You can book your transport through the IRCTC website , 12go Asia and/or the RedBus website .

I personally chose to catch an Uber from Alleppey to Fort Kochi and it was the best decision. Not only was my journey just $15 but my Uber driver took me through the scenic route.

We passed through some quiet villages and even stopped at Arthunkkal Beach, a stunning empty palm tree-studded beach. If you choose this mode of transport ask your driver to do the same.

• Bunk House – This is a great cheap and cheerful option in the heart of Fort Kochi. Perfect if you’re a solo traveller in India . 
• The Fort Bungalow – This is a beautiful property if you’re looking to stay somewhere with a traditional colonial style. 
• Fort Bridge View – If you’re looking for luxurious and decadent rooms at an affordable price then this is a great option to choose.

Things to do in Fort Kochi 

Watch a cultural show .

One of the best things you can do in Fort Kochi is head down to the Kathakali Centre and watch a traditional Kathakali performance. 

Before the main show starts you can observe the actors prepare as they get into character, applying their make-up and traditional dress. 

This will then be followed by a voiceless but very musical performance that is both intriguing and comedic all at the same time. 

Visit the Chinese Fishing Nets

Chinese fishing nets (first introduced by Chinese traders) are large, fixed fishing nets used in Fort Kochi. 

They have become somewhat of an iconic attraction to visit whilst in Fort Kochi 

Visitng Santa Cruz Basilica

Santa Cruz Basilica is one of India’s oldest and most beautiful churches that was built in 1505 by the Portuguese.

It’s one of the most beautiful spots in the Fort, with stunning Gothic architecture and stained glass windows. 

Even if, like me, you’re not a huge fan of architecture I believe it’s still worth the visit as it’s quite an interesting building. 

Explore the Paradesi Synagogue

The Paradesi Synagogue built in 1568 is said to be the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth.

It’s called “Paradesi,” meaning “foreigners” in Malayalam (the local Keralan language) as it was used by Jews from Europe and the Middle East.

Other Places To Visit In Kerala 

If you have more time or are happy to speed up this itinerary a little then I would also recommend visiting the area of Munnar. 

Munnar is a picturesque hill station known for its tea plantations, misty mountains, and serene landscapes. Here you’ll get the chance to see hidden waterfalls and wild elephants. 

There are also some INCREDIBLE hotels in Munnar so it’s well worth the trip if you can fit it in. 

You can easily get to Munnar by bus or taxi from Alleppey or Fort Kochi the journey to Munnar is approximately 4-5 hours from either of these places.

Alternative Route Options 

You can also do this itinerary back to front if you so wish. 

You can start in Fort Kochi and end in Varakala and catch a bus or fly out of Thiruvananthapuram Airport. 

Make sure you adjust this itinerary accordingly to suit the rest of your India travel plans.
