  • Things To Do

Thira’s the capital of the island of Santorini, and the town features a landscape of beautiful whitewashed Cycladic buildings, many iconically topped with blue domes — and all built right into the side of plunging cliffs. Such drama! Such beauty! And with views such as these, it might be hard to believe that there’s more to Santorini than its incredible photo ops. But explore deeper, because the island is packing more serious stuff, such as a winery with some of the world’s oldest vineyards, beaches decked out with spectacular black sand and even a pair of offshore islands crafted long ago by volcanic eruptions. Did we mention that back in the ’60s, archaeologists uncovered remains of a Bronze Age city that some people believe could have been Atlantis? Honestly, who knows — but really, why wouldn’t Atlanteans want to live in beautiful Santorini?

On top of the volcano walls, a white lining of houses hints at breathtaking views and quaint beauty, which in fact is the stunning Town of Fira . Only those that have been on top of the caldera's rim, and walked to the towns of Fira, Oia, and Imerovigli know that there is no other place in the World like Santorini.

Fira Town in Santorini

Obviously, exploring these towns is an absolute must as is a visit to the extraordinary archaeological site of Akrotiri , which dates back to 900 BC. Several religious sites, a handful of museums, and a taste of Santo wine should not be missed. If you like to collect beach memories, the black, red, and multicolored sand beaches of Santorini are truly unforgettable.

Where is Santorini Island?

Located between Athens and Crete, Santorini is part of a group of over 200 islands known as the Cyclades , which circularly surround the sacred island of Delos - the legendary birthplace of Apollo and Artemis . Together with Mykonos (which is located very close to Delos), Santorini is one of the most visited cruise ports in the Cyclades for its stunning landscape, archaeological sites, and unusual beaches.

Where Cruise Ships Anchor in Santorini?

Although Santorini is one of the most visited cruise ports in the Mediterranean, with as many as 5 daily visits, cruise ships do not dock in Santorini.

Tender boats, and the piers in Skala and Athinios

As cruise ships anchor at the vast bay surrounding the volcano's crater, passengers will be transported to the small port of Skala on large and comfortable tender boats operated by locals. Skala is right below the town of Fira.

Services and amenities

Cruise passengers will also find in the terminal many activities, diverse entertainment, and shopping (more about all these below). And the following services and amenities:

  • Exchange Office
  • Tourist Information
  • Car and scooter rental
  • Local tours and excursions
  • Duty-Free shops
  • Souvenirs galore
  • Cafes, restaurants, and taverns

Top things to do in Santorini on a cruise

Santorini is one of those cruise ports where there are many diverse things to do. For those that enjoy visiting archeological sites, Akrotiri is one the most important sites to visit for it takes you back to the 9th century BC.

The major towns on the rim of the Caldera are a delight and the views are spectacular, be it in Oia, Fira, Firostefani, or Imerovigli. Fira has a number of interesting highlights, countless shops, and excellent restaurants.

There is no shortage of beautiful landscapes, lovely beaches, and delicious restaurants with stunning views overlooking the caldera, making Santorini a must on anyone’s itinerary.

Photo of Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral in Fira is a major highlight for cruise passengers on a cruise to the island of Santorini in Greece.

The wineries of Santorini are famous for their fortified wine (Vino Santo) and the beaches with black sand are out of this world. Here are the top things to do on a cruise to Santorini:

  • Visit Akrotiri.
  • Walk around Fira.
  • Travel to Oia.
  • Taste Vino Santo.
  • Enjoy the multicolored beaches of Santorini.
  • Dive in the Caldera.
  • Taste local cuisine.
  • Shop for local products and luxury jewelry.

Fira is a mandatory town to visit. The cruise traveler should always keep at least a couple of hours to meander the cobblestone streets lined with restaurants and cafes with breathtaking views, unique shops, and a handful of stunning sites to visit.

Fira Highlights

There are three museums not to be missed in Fira: the Archaeological Museum, the Megaron Gyzi Museum, and the Museum of Prehistoric Thira. The Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, the Fira Catholic Cathedral, and the Dominican Convent are top religious sites to visit.

The walk to Firostefani or even farther to Imerovigli is a memorable delight for photo enthusiasts and light trekkers. If staying in Fira look out for the following attarctions:

  • Archaeological Museum
  • Megaron Gyzi Museum
  • Museum of Prehistoric Thira
  • Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral
  • Fira Catholic Cathedral
  • Dominican Convent

The charm of Oia

The town of Oia is a must-visit with its marble-paved streets, restaurants, bars, shops, a couple of museums, windmills, and the old Venetian Fort. This charming village was devastated by an earthquake in 1956 and has been completely rebuilt.

Photo of Oia in Santorini.

Oia's Windmills in Santorini

Buildings and tree trunks are painted white every year and stand out against the background of rust color layers of rock, earth, and volcanic ash. Here are the main attractions to enjoy in Oia:

Akrotiri Archaeological Site

The ancient city of Akrotiri lies at the southwestern tip of Santorini and is a fascinating and important archaeological site.

Photo of Akrotiri archeological site, a major highlight for cruise passenegers on a cruise to the island of Santorini in Greece

First settled during the 9th century BC by the Greeks known as Dorians, Ancient Thira comprises a diverse mixture of ruins with architectural elements from the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine eras.

After being covered by lava from a volcano eruption in the 15th century, it has now been partially excavated.

Wine-making and Wine Tasting

The local wine-making industry on the island of Santorini has long been thriving, with a number of large vineyards located around the villages inland.

Photo of Santo Wines in Santorini.

Santo Wines in Santorini

The following are the most famous wineries in Santorini, and all cruise lines offer wine tasting tours.

  • Boutari Winery
  • Venetsanos Winery
  • Canava Roussos
  • Santo Wines Winery

Beaches and Water-sport

Santorini volcanic beaches have produced unusual black and red sand that make for dramatically unique landscapes.

The many famous beaches are along the eastern coast, each with its own unique characteristics.

Although Santorini's beaches are not as nice as some of the others in the Greek islands, its volcanic rocks have produced unusual black and red sand that make for dramatic landscapes.

One thing to note is that this sand absorbs the sun’s rays and gets much hotter than golden sand.

On the more popular beaches, umbrellas can be rented, and tavernas and refreshment stands abound. The more secluded beaches are worth a visit, though the paths leading down to them can be tricky. Here are the most popular and famous beaches in Santorini for cruise visitors:

  • Perissa and Perivolos
  • Amoudi Beach
  • Kamari Beach
  • Monolithos beach
  • The Red Beach
  • Aspri Ammos or White Beach
  • Armeni Beach

Other beaches on Santorini worth mentioning include Baxedes , on the northern coast (and uncrowded), although the swimming is not ideal. Cape Columbo beach is a secluded spot with calm waters suitable for swimming, dark sand, tall cliffs, and fine views.

Karterados is undeveloped, Messa Pigadia is small and easy to reach by boat, Pori is picturesque and quiet, Vlihada has pleasant views and dark sand, and Vourvoulos has two adjoining beaches with plenty of privacy.

Snorkeling and diving

The volcanic eruptions created impressive underwater scenery making for plenty of diving opportunities. Diving tours offer trips to shipwrecks, volcanic caverns, and coastal reefs. Snorkeling locations also abound for those wanting to look below the waves with a bit less equipment.

At the dives sites around the edge of the caldera and below the cliffs, there are many colorful sponges, lobsters, groupers, snappers, barracuda, schools of fish, and even octopus.

Scenic Views

Santorini is well known for its breathtaking sunsets from its towering cliffs, particularly when seen from the village of Oia on the island's far northern end. However, very few cruise ships sail late and do not stay in port long enough for cruise travelers to enjoy such a spectacle. When choosing a cruise calling at Santorini, you should pay attention to the sail away times.

How to explore Santorini on a cruise?

All cruise lines visiting Santorini offer excellent tours and excursions of the island to all highlights and top attractions. These excursions (aka Shorex or Cruise Excursions) offered onboard cruise ships can be very advantageous.

For those that like to be toured by guides with excellent knowledge of sites, shore excursions are advisable to visit the archeological site of Akrotiri, an overall visit to the highlights of the Santorini or the charming village of Oia.

However, the latter is also easy to explore on your own. There are four possible ways to discover and enjoy a day at the cruise port of Santorini:

  • Book a Shore Excursion onboard your cruise ship
  • Local tours at the tender pier in the port of Skala
  • On your own to Fira by cable car or donkey (mule)
  • Transfer to Amoudi
  • Rent a car or a scooter

You can rent a car or a scooter at the pier in Skala, but you will pick up your vehicle in Fira, and to get there you will need to go on the Cable Car, on a Donky, or climb 587 steps, which are shared with the smelly equines.

If you wish to visit the archeological site of Akrotiri a shore excursion is the best way to do it as you will have a knowledgeable tour guide accompanying you.

For those that wish to do a full tour of Santorini stopping at all the major highlights, a shore excursion or a tour with local guides is also advisable.

Local tours are also ideal for excursions of the caldera, be it to bathe in the hot springs of the volcano, snorkel, or fishing.

Obviously, all cruise lines offer many diverse shore excursions in Piraeus (Athens). Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean offer as many as 19 shore excursions . Norwegian Cruise Line has available 9 shore excursions . Oceania Cruises organizes 22 shore excursions , and Princess has 27 excursions available.

There are also excursions offered by the following reputable private online services and local tour operators:

  • Shore Trips
  • Shore Excursions Group
  • Tours by Locals
  • Venture Ashore
  • Private Shore Trips

How to get to Fira, Oia, and around Santorini

Unless you choose to stay onboard your cruise ship or by the port of Skala, you will need to go up to the rim of the caldera to explore the attractions of Santorini. Regardless of whether you go on a shore excursion, or explore Santorini on your own, you will have to travel to the top of the volcano.

The traditional way to go up to Fira is the old Greek way - by donkey (mule). Although we mention this tradition in this review, it does not imply that we approve of the use of mules to climb to Fira.

Photo of Cable Car in Santorini.

Cable Car in Santorini

Since 1979, there is a cable car connecting the port of Skala and Fira. The Cable Car offers spectacular views of the island and is thrilling for some.

Less known, divulged, and rarely mentioned onboard most cruise ships, there is also the Editor's Favorite way of exploring Santorini. For around €20.00 per person, you can get from the Port of Skala to the off-track Port of Amoudi - in itself a wonderful attraction - just below the village of Oia, which is one of the Top Highlights of Santorini.

  • Donkeys (mules)
  • Boat transfer to Amoudi

There are three main ways to get around Santorini, explore the top attractions in Santorini (like the charming town of Oia), or spend some time at one of the unique beaches of Santorini:

  • Rental Car or Scooter

Discover and enjoy Santorini on Your Own

Cruise passengers that like to explore ports independently will be happy to know that most highlights of Santorini are easy to explore on your own. You will find almost all you need to discover Santorini on your own as you step out of the tender boat at the pier in the port of Skala.

But you can easily travel to any of the unique beaches of Santorini on your own or spend quality time in Oia.

To get to any of the beaches in Santorini, renting a car or a scooter is our favorite way. Although a taxi may cost less, you will be time constrained.

The fastest way to get to Oia from Fira is by taxi, and the slowest (around 30 minutes) is by public bus.

Our favorite way to travel to Oia is by boat transfer from the port in Skala to Amoudi Bay, a small and charming port just below the village of Oia.

Photo of Transfer to Amoudi Bay in Santorini.

Amoudi Bay Transfer in Skala

From the pier in Amoudi, you can take a regular bus, a donkey, or walk up 214 steps to Oia.

In Amoudi Bay, before going up to Oia, you can choose to walk along the sea (make a left turn at the pier) and go swim on a secluded beach. Next to the pier in Amoudi, there are a few restaurants with marvelous settings and excellent fresh fish.

Photo of Amoudi Bay in Santorini.

Amoudi Bay in Santorini

A couple of tour operators on the port of Skala offer this transfer to Amoudi including the bus transfer from Amoudi to Oia and from Oia to Fira.

Tourist Info

There is a Tourist Information at the pier in the port of Skala, and also up in Fira.

Greek is the official language, but English is widely spoken - Santorini is such a tourist island that English-speaking cruise passengers will easily communicate with locals everywhere.

The legal tender in Greece is the Euro (€) (EUR). US$ dollars or any other currency are NOT accepted in Greece.

Santorini, Greece

Description.

Did the catastrophic volcanic eruption that ravaged Santorini circa 1600 B.C. destroy Crete's ancient Minoan civilization - and give birth to the myth of Atlantis? In 1967, archaeologists on Santorini unearthed the remains of a Bronze Age city that may have been home to as many as 30,000 people. Whether the Lost Continent of Atlantis is rooted in myth or reality, an undisputed fact remains. The eruption created a caldera - and one of the most dramatic land and seascapes in the entire Mediterranean. On Santorini, whitewashed buildings cling to vertiginous cliffs that plunge to a turquoise sea. Part of the Cyclades Archipelago, the three-island group of Santorini, Thirasia and uninhabited Aspronisi present the traveler with unforgettable vistas. The island has had a number of names throughout history - from Strongyle or "Round" to Thera in honor of an ancient hero. Santorini is more recent and stems from the island church dedicated to St. Irene - Santa Rini to foreign sailors. Note: Santorini is an anchorage port: passengers transfer to shore via shore tender.

More about Santorini, Greece Points of Interest

At the northern tip of Santorini lies this charming Greek village, known for its picturesque architecture, cobblestone lanes, pristine whitewashed buildings and a host of welcoming cafes, shops and blue-domed churches.

Perched on the edge of a dramatic cliff, the island's capital boasts a stunning combination of Cycladic and Venetian architecture, outstanding views of the submerged volcano and an aerial cable car transportation system.

A treasure trove of history and culture, this museum contains an excellent collection of artifacts found in excavations throughout the area, including the archeological site of Akotiri, known as Santorini's "Pompeii."

These uninhabited islands, located in the center basin of Santorini, were created by a series of volcanic eruptions 3,500 years ago. Jagged black lava and therapeutic hot springs characterize their extraordinary landscape.

This region is famous for world-class wines and unique vinification methods. Visit some of the world's oldest vineyards and learn how the micro-climate and rich volcanic soil produces such a full-bodied bouquet.

This seaside village, on the southeast side of Santorini, is famous for its expansive and dramatic black sand beach. Created by volcanic activity, this area is teeming with watersports, cafes and tavernas.

A volcanic eruption around 1650 B.C. caused the center of the island to implode into the sea, forming a huge water-filled crater called the "caldera," which legend proclaims to be the lost city of Atlantis.

The island's highest point towers 2,000 feet above the sea and offers panoramic views of Santorini.

Greek Islands to charge EUR 10 per cruise ship passenger starting with Santorini

CruiseMapper logo

The Greek government has announced a new disembarkation fee of EUR 10 per cruise ship passenger (~GBP 8) for tourists visiting on ships popular island destinations such as Santorini .

This measure is part of an effort to manage the growing number of visitors to Greece’s islands, which have been experiencing significant strain due to high tourist traffic.

Santorini is set to be the first to implement the fee, with plans to extend it to other popular isles like Mykonos by the end of 2024.

Stefanos Gikas (Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy) confirmed the government's intention to support both traditional tourism and cruise ship arrivals while addressing the challenges posed by the influx of tourists.

The decision comes as Greece continues to see a rise in visitor numbers, with 33 million tourists recorded in 2023, making it the 10th most visited country globally, according to the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO).

The new fee aims to mitigate the environmental and infrastructural impact of tourism on the islands, ensuring sustainable growth for the sector.

Watch: Tourists overwhelm Greek island of Santorini. Locals want to limit visitors

Portrait of Ahjané Forbes

Tourism has risen in Greece and many locals are not quite happy with the influx of visitors.

Curious voyagers are especially making their way to Santorini, about 297 miles south of Athens, to get a glimpse of the island's beauty in its natural state.

One of the most famous islands in the world, Santorini is actually a group of islands: Thira, Thirassia, Aspronissi, Palea and Nea Kameni in the southernmost part of the Cyclades, according to Visit Greece , a government tourism website.

The website says that visitors can enjoy local dishes, a drink or a coffee while taking in the scenery of an active volcano.

Santorini locals push for an end to mass tourism

Although the picture-perfect sights have made Santorini a popular tourist destination some locals are hoping to stop the massive travel.

Crowds gather daily waiting to take selfies and pictures during the island's picturesque sunset.

"This has been my dream since high school," American tourist Maria Tavarez, 40 told Reuters .

But for many of Santorini's 20,000 permanent residents, the once idyllic island of quaint villages and pristine beaches has been ruined by mass tourism.

As protests against excessive tourism erupt in other popular holiday destinations, including  Venice  and  Barcelona , Santorini represents one of the starkest examples of how hoards of visitors can impact a place.

Authorities on the island have joined other tourism hot spots in calling for a cap on visitors. Greece is likely to hit a new record for tourism in 2024, surpassing the 33 million tourists in 2023. Inbound travelers rose 20% in the January-May period, according to the Bank of Greece , and overall tourism revenues are up 16%.

In Santorini, the growing number of foreign tourists – some 3.4 million visited the island last year, according to Mayor Nikos Zorzos – is putting pressure on the island's outdated infrastructure and are pricing islanders out of the housing market.

Zorzos says he has been pushing authorities for years not to allow a single extra bed on the island and has proposed a cap on the number of cruise ship visitors to 8,000 a day, down from around 17,000.

"It is in the best interest of our land for there to be a limit," he said.

With Wildfires Near Athens, Here's What Travelers to Greece Should Know

Dangerous wildfires near Athens, Greece forced thousands of residents to evacuate the suburbs north of the country's capital on Monday, August 12. The event was reported to be the worst blaze the Mediterranean country has seen so far this year, burning 40 square miles of land (nearly twice the size of Manhattan), killing a local factory worker, damaging 22 businesses, and leaving at least 78 homes uninhabitable, the Associated Press reports .

As of Wednesday, August 15, there are no active fires in the wider Athens region, Greece's chief fire brigade spokesperson told the BBC. However, residual flare ups still remain a risk.

The fires were first reported raging through the forests north of Athens on August 10. A weekend of consistently high temperatures and strong winds had led to a continuous escalation of the situation. It's the latest of a summer marked by extreme temperatures and earlier heatwaves in Greece . In July, wildfires also burned on the Greek islands of Kos, in the Dodecanese islands, and across Chios and Crete .

Understandably, the recent news has led travelers to wonder if they should postpone trips to Athens and elsewhere in Greece. “The air quality is not great for people with respiratory issues, but otherwise, I would see no reason to stay away from Athens right now,” Athens-based Jacoline Vinke , a Condé Nast Traveler travel specialist and trip planner at Trufflepig said Monday. "The fires are not in a touristic area; flights are not affected and there has been no personal danger for anyone. That said, it is a dramatic and frightening situation for the local people.”

Below, see answers to travelers' frequently asked questions concerning the wildfires with insight from local travel experts.

What's causing the wildfires near Athens, Greece?

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the wildfire; a faulty power cable may have started the blaze, sources told Reuters , but that has yet to be confirmed.

Gale-force winds of around 31 mph in some areas north of the Greek capital, plus several days of extreme temperatures approaching 104 degrees Fahrenheit, meant emergency services worked tirelessly to extinguish the blazes.

“The strong wind is the main problem in the affected areas,” Vinke said on Monday. “Tonight and tomorrow it will be slightly better so hopefully that will help getting the situation under control.”

The wildfire prompted evacuation orders in the suburbs north of Athens on Monday, August 12.

Is it safe to travel to Athens?

The Greek authorities have not announced a state of emergency in Athens. On August 12, the US Embassy in Greece issued a Natural Disaster Alert advising US citizens to “exercise extreme caution” in areas impacted by the wildfires.

“The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has announced Very High Fire Risk (Risk Category 4) and Extreme Fire Risk (Risk Category 5) for many areas in Greece, including areas close to Athens, which can be seen on the Daily Fire Risk Map . This high risk of fire is expected to continue in the coming days,” the alert says. “US citizens living in or traveling near any of the affected areas should follow instructions from local authorities and closely monitor the local media and emergency alerts.”

The good news for travelers is that there are currently no fires in areas that are frequented by tourists on the mainland or on the Greek Islands , Vinke told Traveler on Monday.

“Given the heat in Athens and the air quality, I would suggest to anyone visiting the capital to adjust their pace, avoid going for long walks especially in the middle of the day, and perhaps visit a museum rather than climbing up Filopappou Hill or running in the old Olympic stadium," she said. "The conditions in Athens are not ideal for a long stay, but that holds for August in general. The islands, in contrast, are lovely and breezy right now, wonderful for enjoying holidays without having to deal with the unbearable heat large parts of southern Europe suffer this time of year.”

"In short, I see no reason for anyone who has booked holidays in Greece to change plans, and indeed, coming for holidays as planned is also the best way to help [local residents and businesses]” Vinke said.

Which airlines have canceled flights to Athens?

As of Thursday August 15, airlines have not altered their flight schedule or canceled flights to or from Athens due to the wildfires. “The main concern is if the fires get any closer to Athens, flights will be affected. The airport is north of Athens and the fires are north of Athens,” Ronnie Liadis , a Condé Nast Traveler travel specialist with an expertise in Greece, said on Monday.

“Several airlines operate directly into the islands and Athens can be avoided,” she said. “Airlines such as British Airways, Lufthansa, Aegean, and SkyExpress operate direct flights from several cities in Europe such as Frankfurt, Paris, and London. This is an option for travelers who are flying to Mykonos, Crete, Santorini and Corfu. ”

As for transit around Greece, the coast guard has redirected all ferries from the Rafina port in Athens to Laviro, a port located further south, Athens-based travel blogger and Condé Nast Traveler contributor Rebecca Hall told Traveler.

This is a developing news story and will be updated with more information. A version of this article was originally published on Condé Nast Traveller UK.

Cruise ship makes dramatic rescue to save migrants on stricken boat

A British holidaymaker captured the moment a cruise ship came to the aid of an overcrowded boat taking migrants on a perilous journey across the Ionian Sea.

The stricken vessel was adrift 112 nautical miles south-west of the Greek coastal town of Pylos when the Royal Caribbean liner’s crew diverted to answer the distress call.

The captain made an emergency announcement, saying that all ships in the area had been requested to attend the sinking boat, as the liner altered course en-route to Santorini.

The luxurious Odyssey of the Seas, which is 1,138ft long and has 16 decks, launched two smaller boats to bring the drifting vessel alongside and transfer 77 people onboard.

The occupants included 36 men, seven women and 34 children.

Kevin Gibbons, 41, an ex-pat from the UK who lives in Spain, watched the rescue unfold on Monday night.

‘The crew did an amazing job, sending out two rescue boats to tow the overloaded sinking boat back to the cruise ship,’ he said.

‘Where you can see they were all transferred to the cruise ship awaiting the arrival of the coast guard and authorities to take over.

‘I understand it’s international law to rescue any sinking ship or distress call at sea, I totally accept it’s the right thing to do, but surely the whole world, including the rich states need to do more to assist and deter these deathly attempts to reach Europe.’

Twenty-seven of the rescued were transferred to a Hellenic Coast Guard patrol boat and the remaining 50 onto the Panagia Thalassini passenger-launch before being disembarked at the Greek port of Kalamata.

The liner had to reschedule a port stop in Santorini because of the diversion, with the anchoring taking place yesterday instead.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson said: ‘On August 5, 2024, the ship encountered a small vessel adrift and in need of assistance.

‘Alongside the Greek Coast Guard, the ship’s crew immediately launched a rescue operation and has returned to its sailing.’

A spokesperson for Greece’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Island Policy told Metro.co.uk: ‘Under the coordination of the Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Centre, 77 foreigners who were onboard a sailing vessel were located and rescued from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship in the sea area 112 nautical miles south-west of Pylos.

‘Then the foreigners were transferred to the port of Kalamata.’

According to the Greek Coast Guard, the ‘foreigners’ said that they had launched from an unknown point on the Turkish coast near Bodrum destined for Italy.

They are said to have stated that they paid people traffickers 8,000 euros each (£6,800) for their passage to Europe, taking them across a hazardous stretch of water.

The Greek authorities arrested two men and one woman, aged 48, 36 and 26 respectively, on immigration, people trafficking and exposure of life to danger charges.

An investigation into their activities and possible links with wider organised crime networks is being carried out by the Port Authority of Kalamata and the Directorate of Security and Protection of Maritime Borders.

The perilous nature of the journeys undertaken by migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean has previously been highlighted by Metro.co.uk

The Royal Navy recovered a dead body, plucked an underweight 12-day-old baby from an overcrowded ship and gave chase to a wooden boat packed with hundreds of people when it supported EU operations in the region in 2015, our investigation showed.

According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), the central Mediterranean route was the deadliest migration journey in the world last year as ‘desperate’ people tried to reach the safety of Europe.

Nearly 2,500 people died or went missing as they attempted to cross from Algeria, Egypt, Libya and Tunisia to Italy and Malta, the IOM said.
