Jonas Vingegaard seals overall victory at Tour de Pologne

J onas Vingegaard sealed overall victory at the Tour de Pologne after he finished safely in the peloton stage 7 to Krakow, which was won by his Visma-Lease a Bike teammate Olav Kooij in a bunch sprint.

Kooij delivered a well-judged effort in the finishing straight to claim the stage honours ahead of Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) and Gerben Thijssen (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert). In an unruly bunch finish, Kooij bided his time before coming off Thijssen’s wheel within sight of the line and holding off the fast-finishing Merlier.

It was Kooij’s second sprint win of the week and his seventh victory of a season that included a triumph in Naples on his Grand Tour debut at the Giro d’Italia.

Sunday’s flat final stage from Wieliczka to Krakow was always liable to yield a bunch sprint but that didn’t deter an enterprising group of four riders from spending the bulk of the day off the front.

Archie Ryan (EF Education-EasyPost) has caught the eye every time the road climbed this week in Poland and the Irishman opted to go on the offensive once again on Sunday despite terrain that was hardly suited to his gifts.

Ryan was joined in the break by Jack Rootkin-Gray, Rémi Cavagna (Movistar) and Marcin Budziński (Poland), and the quartet struck a decent working relationship to stay clear onto the three laps of the 5km finishing circuit around Krakow.

By then, a bunch sprint was inevitable, but Ryan and Budziński battled gamely to stay clear until midway through the final lap. From there, the sprinters’ teams took up the reins, even if no single team could control affairs.

DSM-Firmenich-PostNL had numbers in support of Casper van Uden, but he had to settle for fourth as his fellow Dutchman Kooij scorched to a clear victory.

Vingegaard had an untroubled final afternoon of racing, and the Dane was happy to play his part in helping Visma-Lease a Bike tee up a bunch finish for Kooij.

In the final overall standings, Vingegaard finished 13 seconds clear of Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) and 20 ahead of his Visma teammate Wilco Kelderman.

The Tour de Pologne is Vingegaard’s third stage race victory of the season following his triumphs at O Gran Camiño and Tirreno-Adriatico earlier in the year.

Vingegaard’s season was interrupted by the serious injuries he sustained in a mass crash at Itzulia Basque Country in April, but he returned in time to win a stage and finish on the podium of the Tour de France last month.

2023 Tour de Pologne Stage 1 Preview

Poznan > Poznan 184km

tour de pologne preview

The opening stage of the race is one for the sprinters, but GC riders will also be looking at the early bonus sprint and thinking about sprinting for some time. Just 13km into the stage should mean a team tries to control the start and then let the break go after.

Weather

There’s a 40% chance of rain in the afternoon.

Finale

The stage ends with just over 1 full lap of this circuit on a racetrack. Hopefully it’s safer than the racetrack used in the Tour de France.

Olav Kooij  – he’s enjoyed another fine season, winning a stage in Paris-Nice was a huge moment in his career. He’s now signed a new contract with Jumbo-Visma, after a lot of talk about him potentially moving teams. With all that sorted out, he can now focus on the second half of the season, starting here. He arrives with a good sprint train, I expect to see Van Embed do a lot of work, before releasing Van Der Sande and Van Dijke. This train worked well together in 4 Days of Dunkirk, Kooij won two stages in that race, and he’ll start this one as the favourite.

Tim Merlier  – started the season very well, but he would have been frustrated at how recent races went. He doesn’t have as many riders in the sprint train compared to usual, Černy will have to do a lot of the early work, leaving Van Lerberghe to guide in the closing stages. Merlier normally starts stage races with a win, but not in his last two races.

Sam Bennett  – he’ll be riding with a point to prove after missing out on Tour de France selection. He arrives here with Archbold and Mullen, but no Danny van Poppel will be a miss. Sam looked good taking two wins in the Sibiu Tour, he should be fighting for the win.

Arvid De Kleijn  – three wins already this year is beyond what most had expected from the Dutch sprinter this season. Tudor have done a great job supporting him, in particular, Maikel Zijlaard has been brilliant as a final man. De Kleijn has never won a world tour race, that should be his target this week.

Gerben Thijssen  – another sprinter who’s impressed this season with three wins. Last year, it was in this race where he took his first world tour win, he’d love to take another one this week. He’s here with his trusted sprint train, it also seems that the team have brought a couple of extra riders to help in the closing stages.

Pascal Ackermann  – as usual, he’s here without support, UAE seem to have given up on him, despite his recent win at the Giro. This is a race he’s done well in before, hopefully he can surf the wheels and get a good position for the sprint.

Prediction Time

I’ll go with  Olav Kooij , I like the look of his sprint train and he’s bloody fast.

Tour de Pologne: second stage route preview

May 20, at 8.30 pm, the entire route of the 78th edition of the Tour de Pologne will be announced. Of the seven stages planned, the second promises to be rather selective and particularly testing.

The stage will start from Zamość and reach Przemyśl after 201 km, characterized by a predominantly undulating first part followed by the final 50 km featuring all the stage’s pitfalls. The riders will be engaged in a circuit that takes in three climbs – Wółka Hucińska (3rd cat.), Kalwaria Paklawska (2nd cat.) and Gruszowa (2nd cat.) – which will make the riders tackle an 1800m total elevation gain without respite.

Past the third ascent of the circuit, Gruszowa, the final 15-20 km lead into Przemyśl. A slight incline might facilitate some surprise attacks, but the race result will be settled in the last 1500m, where the field will roll on a wide downhill road on tarmac that progressively narrows and runs on setts, whereas the climb includes sections with 13 to 15% gradients.

– We expect it to be a really beautiful stage surrounded by enchanting landscapes throughout the 200km-long course. At the finish, a wonderful view of the mountains can be enjoyed. The technical difficulties of the territory allowed us to design a rather selective stage – explains Czeslaw Lang, General Manager of the Tour de Pologne. – I wouldn’t be surprised if, in the finale, a small group of athletes or some riders expert in explosive stage finishes would fight to claim the victory – he concludes.

Przemyśl is not really new to the Polish stage race. It hosted a stage finish in 1960 for the first time and welcomed the international cycling peloton again in 1967 and 1980.

The city, in the south-eastern part of Poland, just 15 km from the border with Ukraine, has hosted many ethnic groups, cultures and religions since the Renaissance, and has been an important strategic, economic and commercial center between Krakow and Lviv. The old town boasts many monuments, churches, an ancient town hall, a castle and a fortress, the third largest in Europe.

Lying at the foot of the Carpathians, Przemyśl enjoys an exclusive view and offers numerous cycling and hiking trails. Its proximity to the mountains has provided all the necessary ingredients for the Lang Team to organize an absolutely interesting stage that will be important to sketch out the overall classification.

PREVIEW | Tour de Pologne 2023 stage 6 - Final time-trial to decide overall classification, battle between Mohoric, Almeida and Kwiatkowski

Preview . Stage 6 of the Tour de Pologne is the queen stage. The hilly days saw little gaps, and the overall classification will be decided in a 16.8-kilometer time-trial.

The most likely decisive stage in this year's race could be the time-trial. Katowice hosts a different type of stage this year, a 16.8-kilometer challenge against the clock but one that promises differences and also an opportunity for the specialists- specially as it comes with one week to the time-trial World Championships.

Start Times & Order - Tour de Pologne 2023 stage 6 time-trial

PREVIEW | Tour de Pologne 2023 stage 6 - Final time-trial to decide overall classification, battle between Mohoric, Almeida and Kwiatkowski

The route is quite different than what you'd expect from a time-trial. It is mostly flat however technical. Early in the route there are good sections to put down the power, but then the last two third include quite a few sections with breaking and accelerations involved. Quite a few, definitely not a constant effort, it can mix things up on the day.

2023 Tour de Pologne Prize Money Distribution - €40.980 in total

PREVIEW | Tour de Pologne 2023 stage 6 - Final time-trial to decide overall classification, battle between Mohoric, Almeida and Kwiatkowski

The Weather

PREVIEW | Tour de Pologne 2023 stage 6 - Final time-trial to decide overall classification, battle between Mohoric, Almeida and Kwiatkowski

As it has been throughout the whole week, the riders will find strong southwestern wind. Here however it won't likely much of a difference, there are plenty direction changes and it's a technical time-trial, without much of a long distance.

Profiles & Route Tour de Pologne 2023

The Favourites

Tobias Foss - The World Champion, however not the main favourite. In no way actually, Foss has done some decent time-trials this year but nothing like his Wollongong performance. If he got that on the day he can win, even if not he has good chances of being at the top however, he hasn't battled for the GC.

Stefan Bissegger - Bissegger is on paper the rider who came here with the highest ambitions on the time-trial. The route suits him well and with the world championships right at the door he has the need to show his very best legs. He only performed at the Tour de Suisse this year, with a modest field he has the chances to win here.

TV Guide - Where and when to watch Tour de Pologne 2023

We've got a few more riders who have not gone all out in the GC fight, may have the chance to fight for a result here. It's a flat time-trial so it's hard to surprise but there is no man to beat. Geraint Thomas , Thymen Arensman and Lennard Kämna will hope to show good form, whilst the likes of Matteo Sobrero, Josef Cerny and Michael Hepburn may have that extra edge to go for the win tomorrow.

GC battle - The time-trial is the decisive day, the hilly stages only created a selection between those who are able to fight for the win. Matej Mohoric starts the day ahead, 12 seconds of João Almeida , 16 on Rafal Majka , 18 on Michal Kwiatkowski and 26 on the following chasers. The Slovenian has the physique and engine to be a premium time-trialist but it's not a specialty. In 2023 he hasn't done a single competitive time-trial too... In 2022 however he did a few performances where he could defend himself, and he does have a little lead.

The time-trial is technical and this can save him. It's almost pan-flat and so João Almeida won't be able to really profit from the terrain. He will be the main favourite however, Michal Kwiatkowski, the country's TT national champion, also has chances of winning the race. Samuele Battistella , 26 seconds away, a podium contender, whilst Ilan van Wilder may not have good legs after today's crash whilst the rest of the riders will try to save their positions as best as possible. Brandon McNulty starts in 14th spot and may move into the Top5, Mattia Cattaneo also eyeing a climb in the GC.

"This victory is special" - Marijn van den Berg over the moon with stage win at Tour de Pologne

Prediction Tour de Pologne 2023 stage 6:

*** Stefan Bissegger, João Almeida ** Michal Kwiatkowski, Tobias Foss, Geraint Thomas * Matteo Sobrero, Lennard Kämna, Brandon McNulty, Josef Cerny, Samuele Battistella,

Pick : Stefan Bissegger
