Jelly Roll Shares Beautifully Broken Tour Setlist — But Something Is Missing

Jelly Roll is gearing up for this Beautifully Broken Tour , which will launch on Aug. 27 in Salt Lake City, Utah. To get fans amped up for the shows, the country singer has shared the setlist — in playlist form — on Apple Music .

Along with smash hits "Save Me" featuring Lainey Wilson and "Need a Favor," Jelly Roll will belt out some newer songs such as "Liar" and "I Am Not Okay." Fans will notice however, one No. 1 hit is missing.

"Son of a Sinner" is not among the 13 songs listed.

Not only is "Son of a Sinner" among Jelly Roll's ever-growing list of chart-toppers, it's the song he made his country music debut with. Surely, it must hold a special place in his heart.

It's possible that the "Halfway to Hell" singer could add more songs to his setlist. Jelly Roll hinted that a new project will be here soon during a visit to Jimmy Kimmel Live! in June.

"Oh, I'm not supposed to say, but I will," he reveals. "This is the hint I will give: Jelly Roll's music favors the fall."

Although he didn't give any more details, it's possible he could share an unreleased track or two while on tour.

Jelly Roll's 2024 Beautifully Broken Tour Setlist:

"The Lost"

"Halfway to Hell"

"Same A-----e"

"Son of the Dirty South"

"Wild Ones" with Jessie Murph

"Liar"

"I Am Not Okay"

"Smoking Section"

"Creature" featuring Tech N9ne & Krizz Kaliko

"Bottle and Mary Jane"

"She"

"Need a Favor"

"Save Me" featuring Lainey Wilson

Jelly Roll's Beautifully Broken Tour runs Aug. 27 through Oct. 27. Warren Zeiders and Alexandra Kay are listed as openers for the arena tour.

Jess hosts the syndicated radio show, Taste of Country Weekend , which can be heard on country stations nationwide. Tune in for all of the best new country music, spotlights on new tracks and emerging artists, plus Double-Downs on all of your favorites. The weekend is always better with a little Taste of Country in it.

Vikings' J.J. McCarthy to miss 2024 season after knee surgery

Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell speaks to the media about J.J. McCarthy's season-ending torn meniscus and his next steps following the injury. (0:41)

r missing tour

J.J. McCarthy 's 2024 season is over before it officially began.

The Minnesota Vikings ' rookie quarterback will be sidelined until 2025 after undergoing surgery Wednesday to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, coach Kevin O'Connell said.

The news ruptured the increasing optimism around McCarthy's on-field progress and left the team with veteran Sam Darnold , who signed a one-year contract worth $10 million in March, as its likely 2024 starter. The other quarterbacks on the Vikings' roster are 2023 holdovers Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall .

Speaking Wednesday from the Cleveland Browns ' practice facility in Berea, Ohio, where the Vikings will practice this week, O'Connell did his best to put an optimistic spin on the tough news.

"He's confirmed everything that I hoped to see early in training camp through his performance last Saturday," O'Connell said, "but our fan base and everyone should just be excited about the fact that we've got our young franchise quarterback, I believe, in the building. And now it's about the unique aspect of continuing a very critical development process for him, where maybe the physical reps aren't going to be there in the short term, but this is going to be a small bump in the road."

McCarthy was injured at some point during Saturday's preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders . The rookie reported ongoing soreness to team medical officials Monday.

McCarthy, the No. 10 overall pick of the April draft, will be the fourth first-round quarterback in this century who did not play in a regular-season game as a rookie, joining Green Bay 's Jordan Love (2020), Washington 's Jason Campbell (2005) and Cincinnati 's Carson Palmer (2003).

"Other quarterbacks in our league have gone through similar things early on in their journey and came back better and stronger than ever, and that is not only my expectation, but I know that is going to happen for J.J," O'Connell said. "We'll have a great plan for him not only in the quarterback room with those other guys, but a process so that him and I can continue to build our rapport and make sure there is a day-to-day football process."

The Vikings drafted McCarthy as the long-term replacement for Kirk Cousins , who departed in free agency and signed with the Atlanta Falcons . But to help avoid playing McCarthy before he was ready, they signed Darnold and kept Mullens on the roster. There was every indication that Darnold was on track to start Week 1 against the New York Giants even if McCarthy were healthy.

McCarthy made steady progress, however, since an erratic showing in OTAs and minicamp this spring. Darnold received all but two of the Vikings' first-team snaps during 11-on-11 drills in training camp, but McCarthy's two-touchdown performance in Saturday's 24-23 preseason victory over the Raiders likely would have led to more work with the offensive starters.

The injury has halted that momentum. There was some hope that the meniscus damage could be rectified by a "trim" procedure that would have allowed McCarthy to return by midseason, but a medical team led by Vikings orthopedic surgeon Dr. Chris Larson determined that a full repair was needed.

On Wednesday, O'Connell lauded McCarthy's "transformation" and said: "He had started to really look like an NFL quarterback."

"I really believe that J.J. has kind of confirmed to me and a lot of our coaches and players that we got the right guy in the building for the future," O'Connell said. "And he did it in a short amount of time. That's what makes this news hard. Because you know just how exciting it would have been as a daily, minute-to-minute process moving forward. But I think that optimism should be felt by anybody in our building and hopefully our fans."

Rickie Fowler, wife Allison welcome second daughter Nellie

Change Text Size

Rickie Fowler had a good reason for missing the Wyndham Championship, as Fowler and wife Allison welcomed their second child this week.

Fowler announced the news Saturday morning on Instagram, as Nellie joins her older sister Maya in what is now a family of four. Fowler, 35, shared a family photo with Maya holding one hand of each of her parents, with a likely sleepy Nellie in her mother’s arm.

“My Family!! Right where I’m supposed to be,” Fowler wrote on Instagram. “Welcome to the crew Nellie.”

A post shared by PGA TOUR (@pgatour)

Fowler elected not to compete at the Wyndham Championship, the FedExCup Regular Season finale, despite ranking outside the top 70 in the season-long FedExCup standings. He will hence not qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs. The six-time PGA TOUR winner finished No. 16 in last year’s FedExCup, his 2023 season highlighted by a win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, but he has failed to show the same form in 2024. Prior to the Wyndham, he ranked No. 102 on the FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List.

Some things are more important than results, though, and Fowler’s beaming smile in Saturday’s family-of-four photo indicated just that.

Is Your Manufacturing Company Missing Out on R&D Tax Credits?

header-image-manufacturing-rd_v01

Key Takeaways:

  • R&D tax credits reduce tax liability and provide a financial boost for manufacturing companies investing in innovation.
  • Qualifying for R&D tax credits involves creating new or improved products or processes and requires thorough documentation.
  • Misconceptions about R&D tax credits limit potential benefits. Both large and small companies can qualify for incremental improvements.

In the ever-evolving landscape of manufacturing, innovation is still the cornerstone of success. Yet, amidst the constant drive for advancement, many manufacturing companies overlook a valuable opportunity to enhance their financial health: research and development (R&D) tax credits.

These incentives are designed to reward your company for research and development efforts, providing a significant financial boost. Understanding and using these credits can make a substantial difference to your company's bottom line.

Understanding R&D Tax Credits

R&D tax credits are federal incentives aimed at encouraging companies to invest in innovation. These credits are available to businesses that engage in activities related to developing new products, processes, or technologies. The scope of qualifying activities is broad — encompassing everything from developing new software systems to refining manufacturing processes.

For manufacturing companies, this means a wide range of projects could potentially qualify for these credits. Whether you are creating a new product line, improving existing products, developing more efficient production methods, or designing, there is a good chance your efforts could be eligible for R&D tax.

The Financial Impact

The financial benefits of R&D tax credits are considerable. These credits directly reduce your tax liability on a dollar-for-dollar basis. Essentially, for every dollar invested in qualifying R&D activities, a part of this cost can be recouped through these credits.

This reduction in tax liability can significantly enhance your company's financial statements — freeing up capital for reinvestment in further innovation and growth. Additionally, for certain taxpayers under qualifying criteria, R&D tax credits also can be used to offset payroll tax liabilities.

R&D tax credits are not limited to federal taxes either. Many states offer other incentives, creating an even greater opportunity for financial savings. By taking advantage of both federal and state R&D tax credits, your manufacturing company can maximize its benefits.

Qualifying for R&D Tax Credits

To qualify for R&D tax credits, your company must engage in activities that align with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) definition of research and development. The IRS uses a four-part test to decide eligibility:

  • Permitted purpose : The activity must aim to create a new or improved product or manufacturing process. This could involve designing a new part, developing a more efficient assembly line, or creating a product with enhanced functionality.
  • Elimination of uncertainty : The activity must look to analyze and eliminate technical uncertainty about the development or improvement. For example, this might involve deciding the best materials to use in a new product or figuring out how to streamline a production process to reduce waste.
  • Process of experimentation : The activity must involve a process of experimentation, such as systematic trial and error. In a manufacturing context, this could mean testing different prototypes, experimenting with various production techniques, or conducting pilot runs to evaluate the feasibility of new methods.
  • Technological in nature : The activity must be based on principles from physical or biological sciences, engineering, or computer science. For manufacturers, this often includes using advanced engineering principles, integrating new software systems into production lines, or applying scientific research to improve product quality.

Documentation is critical in this process . Detailed records of your R&D activities — including project descriptions, expenses, and outcomes — will support your claim and confirm compliance with IRS requirements. From the first hypothesis to final testing, keep thorough documentation of every step to substantiate your eligibility for R&D tax credits.

Common Misconceptions

Many manufacturing companies believe R&D tax credits are only for large corporations with dedicated research labs. This is far from the truth. Businesses of all sizes can qualify for R&D credits, and the types of activities that qualify are often broader than many realize.

Other common misconceptions:

  • R&D tax credits only apply to groundbreaking innovations.
  • The process to identify and capture these credits is too cumbersome.

In reality, both these beliefs are unfounded. It’s not just groundbreaking innovations — incremental improvements to products or processes can also qualify. If your company is making strides in efficiency, quality, or performance, these efforts may be eligible for R&D tax credits. And capturing these credits doesn’t have to be cumbersome. Engaging the services of a trusted professional will help you efficiently and effectively work through the process.

Maximizing Your R&D Tax Credits

R&D tax credits are not just a way to reduce your current tax liability; they are also a significant tax-planning tool. These credits can reduce estimated tax payments and income taxes, thereby increasing cash flow and influencing future financial planning as your company grows.

To maximize the benefits of R&D tax credits, you need to implement a strategic approach. Consider these key steps:

  • Find qualifying activities : Conduct a thorough review of your operations to find all potential R&D activities. Look beyond obvious projects to uncover less clear qualifying activities.
  • Maintain detailed documentation : Keep comprehensive records of your R&D projects — including goals, methodologies, and expenses. Proper documentation is essential for substantiating your claims.
  • Consult with tax professionals : Work with tax advisors who specialize in R&D tax credits. They can help you navigate the complexities of the application process and improve your claim.
  • Review and update annually : Regularly review your R&D activities and expenses to confirm you are capturing all eligible credits. As your company evolves, so will your R&D activities.

Unlock Your Potential with R&D Tax Credits

R&D tax credits are a powerful tool for manufacturing companies striving for innovation and growth. By understanding the eligibility criteria and keeping diligent documentation, your company can unlock significant financial benefits.

Do not let misconceptions prevent you from exploring this valuable opportunity. Engage with knowledgeable tax professionals to navigate the process and maximize your benefits.

Real Gone

R. MISSING – Placeholder For The Night EP

The title track opens with an electronic melody that sounds like an overture for an old 1930’s horror film as heard through the ears of Tangerine Dream, before the body of the track sets up a steady rhythm and some fantastic deep electronica grooves. Increasing the beats midway, it’s easy to suspect that R. Missing have a further interest in later Euro electronica, as traces of Air and Royksopp inform the growing arrangement. Linking the various pieces of this gradually blossoming melody, a heavily treated voice lends so much of an other worldy quality; the vocal melody is easily likeable, even if the core of the lyrics are so drenched in a dreampop echo, the song almost becomes like an unexpected alternate reality. Sliding into the fade – which feels as if it comes far too early – R. Missing’s blend of pop and electronica always seems keen to leave the listener wondering what might come next. It could be anything.

‘Alms’ offers something that, if possible, seems even more minimalist. An ominous quiet punctuated by beats and claps appears to introduce something of a modern twist on Ultravox’s ‘Vienna’ – never a bad thing – before disjointed bleeps join a cold and detached voice. The slow beats change tack, sounding more distinctive once several ticking sounds suggest something of an emotive timebomb. ‘I had to kill your parents’, sings a voice that almost seems devoid of emotion, taking R. Missing’s already bleak viewpoint to new depths. There’s a lot in this minimalist set up that’ll keep you listening; it’s almost as if the unsettling nature comes from its constantly holding back, and even when reaching a climax with multi-tracked verses, it’s almost sketch-like approach becomes everything. It possibly isn’t going to be a favourite for first time listeners, but this marriage between sparse electronica and a dream pop voice used to disarm is quite striking, to say the least.

Having warmed up, relatively speaking, the EP brings its best sounds during closing number ‘Darkness, I’ll Always Be Your Girl’, where extra distortion and beats beef up the R. Missing sound to delve into a world of dark, almost shoegaze moods. Although the haunting and echoing vocal always suggests something far more modern, it’s almost as if we’ve been given access to old Lush tapes remixed by Lustmord. The way a cool voice weaves in and out of feedback squalls and a pulsing drone suggests an instant classic in dreampop/shoegaze terms. The arrangement has such a brilliantly retro feel that, on first listen, you don’t even notice that there isn’t really a song here – just a repetitious two line mantra which, again, seems like the perfect compliment to the performers’ overall sound. Despite it feeling as if there’s only the skeleton of an idea here, though, fans of such electronica should be in their element.

This is devastatingly short, but it’s great. It has an inherent coldness, yet its blankets of synthetic sound seem so full and dreamlike. So much of that is due to a light, filtered voice, drawing its core from classic 90s dreampop, but the whole package just…works. If you have even the most fleeting interest in light electronica, dreampop or alternative pop noise, you owe it to yourself to take a listen.

Chaka Khan, Hollywood Bowl headliner, on missing Prince, rehab in your 60s, and dumb men in music

Chaka Khan in a black dress with ostrich feathers.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

It’s never a bad time to be influenced by Chaka Khan, but this feels like an exceptionally great moment to call back to her. Records like Beyoncé’s disco/house masterpiece “Renaissance” and Sabrina Carpenter’s zippy “Espresso” all have DNA from the 71-year-old Khan, whose career includes leading the ‘70s funk group Rufus and a generation-spanning solo career in rock, R&B, soul and jazz. Her recent Tiny Desk show was a jubilant hit.

Khan has two shows in L.A. in the near future: Friday’s headline set at the Hollywood Bowl with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, and a high slot at the classic soul and R&B fest Fool In Love on Aug. 31. We talk about ridiculous men in the music industry, her friendships with the late Prince and Whitney Houston, and what it takes for Black women in music to ask for help and get it.

People really loved that Tiny Desk performance. It must be meaningful to see new generations discovering this music and holding it close.

They pretty much woke me up to come and sing! We had a good time, and it’s a beautiful thing. A lot of young people were born and raised on me. I’m already a staple.

You were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year — belated congratulations. Jann Wenner from Rolling Stone and the Rock Hall had some pretty ridiculous things to say about how women in rock were not “articulate enough on this intellectual level.” Did you hear about that at the time?

I did not. Did he really say that? Wow.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ousts Jann Wenner from board after controversial interview

The move comes after comments Wenner made about Black and female artists in a New York Times interview promoting his new book, ‘The Masters.’

Sept. 16, 2023

Did you encounter that sentiment from men throughout your career?

I’ve never heard anybody say that women were not geniuses at music. I think women excel in the arts, period. I don’t read a lot of that crap that people say. I found it’s so much easier to just do what you do, do it the best you can and help and give to those who are interested and who want to be something great.

“I’m Every Woman” has been so deeply embedded in pop culture for so long. Are there times when the culture turns misogynist and that song resonates differently?

The song says “I’m Every Woman,” but you know, on any given audience on any given night, everybody’s singing it. So it’s an empowerment song. That’s what’s important. When I got the song, I thought “this is really powerful,” but for a while, I felt uneasy and out of place, because I took it personally. Like “I, Chaka Khan, am every woman?” But we are collectively every woman. We’re all human beings, we all have some male and we all have some female in us.

So many pop artists are indebted to you. There’s obviously influence in Beyoncé’s “Renaissance,” and Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” was recently a hit and calls back to your late ’70s, early ’80s funk. Why is that era still so compelling today?

I think the ’90s music was pretty hot, too [laughs]. The thing is that good music never dies. Anything that’s beautiful, honest and true never dies. That is what is happening here. It has very little to do with the type of music that was being put out at any given time. As long as the music is quality, I’m glad to have made an impression.

You’ve never stopped making records, and you just did a really fun song with Sia and you’re in studio now with her now. What’s your musical relationship like?

Sia is like my goddaughter. We are so like minded and like in spirit, I wonder where she’s been all my life. I wish I could have known her sooner. Everything she writes, it’s very intuitive and she understands me. When I asked her “How do you know that about me?” she said to me, “Well, I grew up on you.”

When you write songs today, has your perspective or singing evolved with age in ways that you find interesting?

Oh yeah, because it’s changed. People have changed, stuff has changed. And so where we are as singers and musicians, songwriters and poets, art speaks to what is going on presently in this world. We are profoundly affected for the most part. Now, my music’s more introspective. Some of the songs are about making things happen and having self-esteem and enough pride and gumption to go for it.

Michael McDonald and Paul Reiser on the importance of forgiveness and the problem with gossip

After meeting at a party, singer Michael McDonald and actor Paul Reiser teamed up to write McDonald’s memoir, “What a Fool Believes.”

You have a Hollywood Bowl show coming up. Do you have any fond memories of playing there?

I love it! It’s a great venue, great sound and it’s so beautiful. There’s nature all around you, and when you get a full moon out there on the night you play the Hollywood Bowl, there’s nothing more beautiful.

Later this year, you’re playing the Fool in Love fest with some absolute legends, is it meaningful to you that promoters are still building new festivals around those sounds and eras?

I grew up on a lot of that stuff, too. I have a wide variety of music that’s a part of my journey. That’s the music that I heard when the family got together, that I had to listen because I had no choice. But once I started buying my own records, I bought a lot of rock and roll, jazz and progressive stuff. Stevie Wonder and Sly Stone were was so special to me.

I wish Sly could be there on that bill; “Frisky” is one of my all-time favorite albums. We’re not in touch as often as I’d like to be with him, he’s never stayed in one place for too long. But we are connected in a very deep place. There are a lot of people that should have been on that gig, but didn’t make it.

Chaka Khan performs.

Yeah, a lot of people you were close to or influenced, like Prince and Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse, didn’t live to see this stage of their career. Is that a hard part of having such a long career, that you end up missing a lot of people?

My grandmother once told me that one day, there’s gonna be a day when the phone rings. And you’re going to know pretty much who it is. It will be one of probably two or three people. It gets tough if you live a long and rich life like she did. She says it gets lonelier and lonelier. My grandmother had a lot of family, but she had her moments when she really missed her friends. I really miss my friends. I really, really do. Whitney [Houston], I miss deeply. I miss Prince deeply. I miss Miles Davis.

You wrote in your memoir that during your early years in Rufus and your solo career, there was some pretty hard partying.

Everyone did back then!

It was the ’70s and ’80s, of course. You also went to rehab in 2016. Was it hard to make those changes at that stage of life?

That’s what it boils down to — you making those changes. Not the rehab. I give very little credit to the rehabilitation society who charge an arm and a leg and a heart. It really boils down to you at the end of the day. If it works for you, I’ve found, it has very little to do with sober living like the one I went to and spent so much money at.

White male rock stars go to rehab all the time, and it’s a badge of honor. Is it harder for Black women in music to seek support like that?

It’s hard for Black people in most industries to get their propers. I’m not just saying that, we all know that. You can see it every day. Yeah, it’s tough. But I don’t focus on that. It’s never stopped me from working and trying to attain and achieve. It does not put a dent in that at all.

Are there any deep cuts in your live shows today that you’re surprised young people know?

I’m not surprised at anything with young people. These kids really are on it. They know it a lot more than we give them credit for. I remember having to really search and do some legwork to find the music that I wanted to hear, but today everything is at your fingertips.

Before you go, I found your old episode of Celebrity Ghost Stories , it sounds like you had a very scary experience with the paranormal! Have you had anything like that happen again?

No, no, no. I learned how to deal with it and what to do. I stayed in so many hotel rooms, and you never know what happens in hotel rooms. People go to hotels to do the things they would not do at home. So I’ve learned how to cleanse my rooms when I go in. I’m never without my crucifix and my holy water, and my palo santo. I’m on it. I don’t have any problems anymore.

The Big Picture

  • Collider's Steve Weintraub talks with John Cena about his upcoming Prime Video action-comedy Jackpot! .
  • Cena talks about working with co-stars on set, the improvisation with Paul Feig, and reveals a new dance number in Peacemaker Season 2.
  • He also discusses his future plans for his WWE farewell tour in 2025.

It's been a banner year for John Cena . The wrestler-turned-actor has landed roles with some pretty big projects in 2024, including the Emmy-winning series The Bear and Matthew Vaughn 's star-studded comedy, Argylle . That's on top of filming for DC's spin-off series Peacemaker and his WWE career. Up next, Cena is starring opposite comedian Awkwafina in Paul Feig 's dystopian comedy Jackpot! , and gets to showcase his comedic chops in addition to the action we know he can crush.

During an interview ahead of Jackpot! 's Prime Video release, Collider's Steve Weintraub talks with Cena about the status of Max's Peacemaker Season 2 , and while DC has him in a "death grip," Cena does confirm one exciting change for fans to look out for. He also talks about working alongside Jackpot! co-stars Awkwafina, Simu Liu , Seann William Scott, and his WWE farewell tour he'll be devoting himself to in 2025.

You can watch the full conversation in the video above or read the transcript below.

Jackpot! (2024)

In the near future, a 'Grand Lottery' has been newly established in California - the catch: kill the winner before sundown to legally claim their multi-billion dollar jackpot.

John Cena Confirms 'Peacemaker' Is Getting a New Dance Number

He also confirms dc has a death grip on him..

COLLIDER: You know I'm a huge fan of Peacemaker . I know you're filming. Where are you in the filming process?

JOHN CENA: We have started.

[Laughs] I knew that part, I was wondering where you were at.

CENA: This is another way for me to dodge the question. That background is sick .

We're not getting into my background. Here's my other thing, Alan Tudyk told me that his wife is the one who crafts the opening dance number. Anyway, I've heard through the grapevine, you guys are doing a new dance number, and I'm just curious, have you been practicing? What can you tease?

CENA: I can confirm that there is a dance number and that's it.

I'll leave you be and say that I really hope the shoot is going well.

CENA: I can confirm that it is going exceptionally well. We're very proud of what we have so far.

Jumping into why I actually get to talk to you…

CENA: By the way, you see how much of a death grip DC has on me? “I can confirm that. I cannot confirm that.” That's it.

What's interesting about it is, I usually ask questions that don't get people into trouble, like, “how far are you in filming?”

CENA: Dude, when it comes to DC, no one gets anything. They may hear it, but they won't hear it from me.

Listen, I respect it, and we will talk more about that later.

'Jackpot!' Comes from the "Brilliant and Warped" Humor of Paul Feig

One thing about Paul is that he puts in his movies people who can improvise. I'm just curious for you: Was there something you came up with spur of the moment, and it's actually in the movie?

CENA: The blooper reel is part of the movie, so you gotta stay for the credits. Most of my stuff is in the blooper reel, which is great. It's the way it should be because Paul has a brilliant mind as a comedian, so the stuff that he comes up with should make the cut because that's the best stuff and those are the best jokes. But I was very happy to see some stuff in the blooper reel.

How many takes did you ruin from actually laughing because of Awkwafina and the other comedians in the film?

CENA: There wasn't a day where we didn't crack each other up. And it wasn't like, “Okay, my challenge today is to break someone.” Paul's jokes just come from out of left field. I love getting inside the minds of people with kind of a warped sense of humor, and Paul is just that. So when he runs in with his page alts, and he does it so secretly because he doesn't want to stooge the joke off to the other person, he shows you the page, and then he’s like, “You got it? You got it? Okay.” Just to say the jokes out loud are crazy, and then to see the other person's reaction—that's when you get the other person, is when they're not expecting a Paul Feig joke, and it just hits you in the face.

One of the things about Paul is that he is impeccably dressed. One of the things about you is you are impeccably dressed. But did you ever feel a challenge with Paul because he brings it every day?

CENA: So Paul is always impeccably dressed. I'll show up to set in workout gear for convenience and efficiency; Paul will show up to set with, like, full pocket square, lapel pin, hat, boots, coat. I'm pretty sure he sleeps in a three-piece suit. This is just—I've dolled myself up for you, my friend. I have this look, and I have the workout look, and they're 50/50. Paul is always done up. He's always to the nines.

I've interviewed him for many, many, many years, and I have never seen him in anything other than, “Oh, he is together.”

CENA: He always looks smart, as the Brits would say. He looks very smart.

John Cena Couldn't Wait to See Paul Feig's Dystopia

So, you've done so much action in your career and the thing about this film is that you guys were making it in a limited time frame, but there's still a ton of action. Talk a little bit about your history with action and what that enabled you to do when you have a day or less to film a sequence that might normally take two or three days.

CENA: The key is everyone working in the machine. It's not one person being gifted, or what they bring to the table. Our stunt team worked extremely well with the constraints that they had. They come highly decorated, they have a lot of fluency, and they put together feasible action that we could all do. I was lucky enough to take part in a lot of the action, too, which was great. But yeah, it was done in a short amount of time; that also takes everybody learning the choreography beforehand, so when you get on set, you shoot it. You're not learning it as you go.

Sure. When you saw the shooting schedule, what day did you circle in terms of “I cannot wait to film this?”

CENA: We did a prosthetic broken nose that was fun that made it into the trailer. I thought that that was fun just because Awkwafina got to break my nose, which was fun. I wanted to see the very end of the movie. I thought that was pretty interesting. I wanted to see how they would do it because after all the action and all the comedy, it really cuts to the heart of the movie. It's one of those where if you're at the edge of your seat laughing, maybe one of those comedic tears is actually for the heart of the characters. I thought that was pretty cool. And I just wanted to see Paul's view of what dystopia looked like . So when we started seeing the world, I thought that that was pretty cool, too.

You've done streaming and you've done theatrical for your releases. Is there a sense of, “Yeah, it kind of sucks that it's not in theaters, but I also don't have to worry about opening weekend grosses?”

CENA: No, I just think it's two different things. As entertainment continues to evolve, I think it just becomes two different paths. You may not be as stressed out about opening weekend numbers with a streamer, but if no one watches it, you're just not going to get another opportunity, so you still have to do good work. I don't think it acts as a safety net; I think there's equal pressure to both. I just think it's a reinforcement that you should always try to focus to do the best you can.

John Cena Hits the Road for a WWE Farewell Tour

"i can probably confirm the peacemaker will take us to the end of 2024.".

At some point, you're gonna wrap on Peacemaker . Whenever that is, what are you thinking about for the future in terms of projects that you're looking at, or I don't know what you've committed to?

CENA: This is one thing I can give you—I can probably confirm the Peacemaker will take us to the end of 2024, and I can say that with the utmost conviction because I have given the calendar year 2025 to WWE. I am retiring in 2025, and I start that farewell tour in January and I'll end it in December. It's gonna be right around 36 dates around the world to pay thanks and gratitude to the WWE audiences around the world. So, that's what I'm doing in 2025.

I gotta go, but I just have to say that I am so impressed that you're gonna do that tour because I've learned so much about wrestling in the last number of years and it's so physically taxing in a way that I don't think the average person realizes.

CENA: Well, it's also very rewarding, and I'm grateful. The audiences have been there for me for almost close to 25 years now, so I just wanna say thank you.

Introducing R. MISSING

r missing tour

New York City-based darklings R. MISSING are fronted by Sharon Shy, a vocalist with an elegant Jane Birkin-like presence while the studious Toppy Frost does the music.

Shy has been quoted as saying “While most people seem to bond over things they both like, I think it was a very long shared list of dislikes that kept our initial conversations going”.

Previously going under the moniker of THE ROPES with gloomy indie fare such as ‘Love Is A Chain Store’, R. MISSING are much more electronic if no less enigmatic, exploring more shadowy forms akin to other North American acts such as CHROMATICS , TR/ST and NATION OF LANGUAGE .

Their debut six track mini-album ‘Unsummering’ came out in 2017 on the French label Talitres with the doom disco of ‘Kelly Was a Philistine’ being particularly intriguing, although the pair’s post-punk tendencies were still very much looming the brooding title track. The 2020 singles ‘Suzywhereabout’ and ‘Placeholder For The Night’ signalled airier developments in their increasingly synthier sound.

But on signing to Sugarcane Recordings who have been a North American home to artists such as SIN COS TAN, GUSGUS, PROCESSORY, GAZELLE TWIN, FRAGILE SELF and THE KVB, the wonderful new single ‘Crimeless’ is R. MISSING’s most electronic pop noir statement yet, like CHROMATICS carefully reconfigured for the dancefloor with Sharon Shy presenting a whispery singing style that could easily be mistaken for Ruth Radelet.

Accompanied by a video made by Nadia Hironaka and Matthew Suib, it is a variation on their 2019 installation ‘Vanitas MMXVlll’. Using still life like half-eaten fruit, broken glass, snapped candles, wilting flowers and skulls falling upwards in slo-mo, its original concept was “to reflect our current cultural moment, where formerly stable institutions that once embodied shared values are undermined while pride and avarice have been elevated to virtues”.

As if to reinforce R. MISSING’s fully focussed electronic direction, Icelandic label mates GUSGUS provide two tight dance remixes for ‘Crimeless’ although THE KVB contribute something with more of a psychedelic shoegaze demeanour that also acts a reflection of Shy and Frost’s roots. It could all get very interesting…

REVIEW: R.Missing presents Verónica Pass

Actualizado: 29 abr 2022

r missing tour

An ethereal and poetic voice that moves through minimalist and cinematographic sounds that oscillate between synth-wave and dark wave, definitely New Yorkers R. Missing in an electronic band that manages to represent the chaos and loneliness of the contemporary world, using the sadness as a form of catharsis, which translates love, loss, passion and life itself, in his music. Her latest album, Verónica Pass, is the consolidation of her career, conquering a sound as complex, timeless and subtle as it is deep and magnetic, which covers all possible limits. In addition, the Sally Shapiro remix gives the album a twist, managing to move us to another dimension very easily.

R.Missing creates music that works in all arenas and transcends genres. Its opening of him to a wide range of sounds is what has made him a much-loved band, but also someone who operates in his own parallel musical world. The result is a work that is as experimental as it is intense and addictive, which takes hold of oneself like a sweet poison, while transporting us progressively, as few producers with any ease are willing to do.

Verónica Pass leaves nothing behind and confirms the mission that electronic music has always had: to play with the present and move towards the unknown, beyond entertainment. The result is a work that is as experimental as it is intense and addictive, which takes hold of oneself like a sweet poison, while transporting us progressively, as few producers with any degree of fluency are willing to do. We don't know what the future holds, but we do know that this album is testimony to a turbulent and uncertain present, which will remain in our memories forever. Because of records like this, we can keep fighting for a better future.

Taylor Swift fans are devastated by canceled Eras Tour shows in Austria over apparent attack plot

Taylor Swift fans are devastated by the cancellations of three sold-out Eras Tour shows in Austria after authorities foiled an apparent plot for an attack in Vienna

VIENNA — Pricey tickets for sold-out Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna. Hundreds of euros, if not more, dropped on flights and hotels. Tens of thousands of Swifties, bedecked in homemade friendship bracelets, devastated by the cancellations of three Eras Tour shows in Austria after authorities foiled an apparent attack plot.

Austrian security officials said two young men wanted to commit an attack outside the stadium, killing as many people as possible using knives or self-made explosives.

Concert organizers said they they expected up to 65,000 fans inside Ernst Happel Stadium at each concert and as many as 30,000 onlookers outside, where authorities said the suspects planned to strike.

The venue sat empty Thursday morning aside from media filming outside. But later in the day on Corneliusgasse — a small street just 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the stadium — fans flocked to trade friendship bracelets and commiserate about the cancellations. The beaded bracelets, typically bearing Swift’s song titles or popular phrases, are usually swapped at concerts with strangers.

The fans gathered on Corneliusgasse specifically because the street name echoes “Cornelia Street,” the name of a contemplative synth-pop track from Swift’s 2019 album, “Lover.”

The title refers to a street in New York City’s Greenwich Village, where Swift rented a luxury apartment in 2016 and fans now visit to take selfies. “And I hope I never lose you, hope it never ends,” she sings in the song’s chorus. “I’d never walk Cornelia Street again.”

Swift has not spoken publicly about the plot or canceled shows. “Taylor Nation,” a verified Instagram page widely believed to be run by her team, re-posted the announcement from concert organizer Barracuda Music in a “story,” which is only visible for 24 hours. Her main account has not posted anything.

Both suspects appeared to be inspired by the Islamic State group and al-Qaida, authorities said. The main suspect, aged 19, had also posted an oath of allegiance online to the current leader of the Islamic State group, authorities said. The suspects’ names were not released in line with Austrian privacy rules.

The news rattled the superstar’s fans, many of whom took to social media to express their devastation at missing out.

Others, however, begged online for tickets to Swift's next shows. She is expected to perform at London’s Wembley stadium in five concerts between Aug. 15 and 20 to close the European leg of her record-setting Eras Tour.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said officials have learned lessons from a 2017 attack during an Ariana Grande concert at northwest England’s Manchester Arena in which a suicide bomber killed 22 people. Khan said Thursday that this month’s Swift shows will go on.

Karoline Pedersen of Norway planned to go to a London concert — she already saw Swift in May at a Sweden show — but now has second thoughts even though police there say the Austrian plot has no link to the U.K.

“It is not pleasant to have to look over one’s shoulder. It angers me that a concert like this, where millions of girls have said they actually feel safe, should be turned into a place of fear,” Pedersen told NRK.

Some North American fans have traveled abroad in “tour tourism ,” a pattern that emerged during Beyoncé’s Renaissance world tour . The phenomenon occurred when fans noticed that tighter restrictions on ticket fees and resales in Europe made it no more costly — and potentially cheaper — to see Swift perform abroad rather than closer to home .

Andrew Strauss and his mother, Alison Strauss, heard about the plot Wednesday while sipping wine at a New Jersey airport bar. Suddenly, the 34-year-old’s cellphone “started blowing up.’’

“I was like, ‘wait, why are all these people texting me broken heart emojis?’’’ he told The Associated Press from Vienna on Thursday. “And then I went on Twitter and I looked at my mom and I was like, ‘I think the concert is canceled.’ “

The pair were on a direct flight to Austria and “you could see it, like, ripple through people finding out,” he said.

While he has already seen Swift in concert, his mother has not. The show was the start of a European vacation with other family members so they decided to stay in Vienna anyway.

“I actually want to write to her and tell her: ‘This was a great mother-son event. Can you get me tickets in the U.S. for one of the concerts?’” Alison Strauss, 62, said.

The pair said they still support Swift and believe the concert organizers made the correct decision.

“It’s not in her nature to put anybody in danger,″ Alison Strauss said. “And to play three sold-out concerts is probably way too much to risk.”

Dazio reported from Berlin and Kirka reported from London. Associated Press writers Geir Moulson and Kirsten Grieshaber in Berlin; Jan M. Olsen in Copenhagen, Denmark; and Maria Sherman in New York contributed to this report.

Stock prices down, recession worry looms. What to know as you make your next move

The stock market has hit a rough patch amid sudden signs a recession might be near. for investors sitting on hefty gains, it might be time to lighten up. but ask yourself five key questions first..

Portrait of Russ Wiles

The stock market is suddenly looking a bit woozy after hitting a rough patch that pushed broad market indicators down about 6% in just three days, wiping out a few trillion dollars amid sudden worries that the economy might be heading for a recession.

The spike in volatility and sharp swoon caught most investors by surprise, as is usually the case. Predicting stock prices in the short term is difficult to do, even for the experts, and nobody knows for sure how this will play out.

Short bursts of pronounced selling aren't all that unusual, even if many people had been lulled into thinking the recent trend of slow but steady gains would continue. The summer and early autumn months often are a time of seasonal weakness anyway, with most of the stock market's historic gains coming in winter and spring.

If you have been sitting on large paper gains, it might be time to sell or at least to trim your exposure to the stock market. But it also might be time to do nothing. Consider these five questions before you make any moves:

Where will you put your proceeds?

If you're worried about seeing your portfolio holdings shrink, selling might be a sound decision. Investing can be highly profitable, but you don't want to lose sleep over it.

But still, where will you put your sale proceeds? The normal first step is to transfer the proceeds into a money-market fund, and that's fine for a quick exit. But money funds, even with some currently yielding about 5%, aren't a great long-term parking place. Before you sell, you should have a better idea of where to divert the proceeds, especially since money-fund yields will drop when the Federal Reserve starts cutting interest rates, which appears imminent.

And if your sell decision is driven by emotions, consider whether you might be overreacting. Even professionals, the so-called market experts, can fall prey to this.

The recent tumble "had the feel of the ‘sell now, ask questions later’ kind of day" where everyone was getting out for almost any reason, observed Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist for LPL Financial.

Philip Straehl, chief investment officer at Morningstar Wealth, advises patience and discipline. "First and foremost, investors should not overreact to market volatility and sell in a panic," he advised.

Does your portfolio reflect the carnage?

You might feel pressured by headlines to make a change in your holdings, to take some action, but maybe your actual paper losses aren't bad enough to warrant any moves.

Most people don't hold all of their investible assets in the stock market, which likely means your personal losses over the past few days have been much lower, on a percentage basis, than the broad indicators like the Standard & Poor's 500 or Nasdaq show.

Even if you own a lot of stock funds, they might be dropping less than the market, and especially compared to the big tech stocks that have led the recent rally.

You might consider calculating your personal "beta," which is a fancy way of figuring out how much your portfolio would fluctuate depending on changes in the overall market.

The S&P 500 slumped about 6% over the three trading days from July 31 through Aug. 5. If your personal holdings fell by 3%, your beta would be 0.5 (3% dividend by 6%). That implies that you should expect to lose about 50 cents for every $1 of market drop. While that's not great, it's better than the headlines might suggest.

Are you really worried about a recession?

If you truly fear the nation suddenly is slipping into an economic downturn, then you probably should focus on other financial concerns such as securing your job the best you can, paying down credit card balances and building up a six- to 12-month cash reserve to meet contingencies.

Selling your stock-market holdings might not be a priority at all, especially if you're investing for the long haul.

As for that recession, it's far from a certainty.

The nation's unemployment rate has been inching higher, but from very low levels. Jobs are still available, and people are still spending money. In fact, it was just a couple of weeks ago that the government reported surprising strength in both consumer spending and gross domestic product. The U.S. economy is massive and, like an aircraft carrier, usually doesn't turn around on a dime.

But recessions are part of the natural economic cycle and happen about once every six years or so, with the swift but steep drop in early 2020 the most recent occurrence.

Are you willing to risk missing a possible rebound?

So, you decide to sell some of your stock market holdings, and that helps you feel more comfortable. Fine: You're halfway there.

To make any such trade profitable, you need to buy back later at a lower price than you sold, and that's difficult to do consistently. Don't be surprised if you sit on your cash holdings longer than you intended — or wind up buying back into the stock market at a later date, when prices are higher.

If you invested $1,000 in the Standard & Poor's 500 stocks and left the money alone for the past 25 years through July 6, it would have grown to $3,918 (ignoring expenses), according to Morningstar. But miss the single best day over that stretch, and your return would have tumbled to $3,511.

And who knows when the best day will happen? Keep in mind that worries over sudden economic weakness likely will trigger a series of interest-rate cuts by the Federal Reserve, and they tend to provide a tailwind for stocks.

"History suggests that timing the market is extremely difficult and that volatile down days tend to be followed by recovery rallies that are hard to time," said Straehl. "Investors should stay the course and follow a disciplined investment process.”

Could you trigger unwanted taxes?

Selling stocks or mutual funds might mean that you lock in a tax bill. If you're moving proceeds within a tax-sheltered account like a workplace 401(k) plan, you don't need to worry about taxes, but taxes would be a consideration if you're pulling money from an unsheltered brokerage account.

Assuming your profit is long-term (meaning you're selling something that you owned for more than one year), then you can qualify for a capital-gains rate that, for most people, is 15%. But if a short-term gain applies, then you would be paying taxes at your ordinary income rate, which likely would be higher.

The point here: Don't forget about the tax ramifications when making what could be an emotional sell decision. Uncle Sam doesn't care if you sold in a panic. He still will want a slice of your profits.

Hip-hop, R&B star says low ticket sales caused last-minute tour cancelation

Grammy-winning singer and rapper Lauryn Hill is coming forward after the North American leg of her tour with The Fugees was canceled three days before it was supposed to begin.

In a statement shared to her social media accounts on Wednesday, Hill, 49, confirmed rumors that low ticket sales caused the cancelations.

“Last year, I faced an injury that necessitated the rescheduling of some of my shows. Regrettably, some media outlet’s penchant for sensationalism and clickbait headlines have seemingly created a narrative that has affected ticket sales for the North American portion of the tour,” she said in the statement. “The trust and faith I have in my intentions and my commitment to my art seem to have been overshadowed by this unfortunate portrayal.”

“Performing for my fans, is a profound exchange of energy and emotion that excites me every time. Every show is a piece of my expression and testament to our connection and shared love for music,” she continued. “I can assure you that no one is more disappointed about not being able to perform than I am.”

Hill did say that the UK and European legs of the tour are still taking place.

“Know that I am not only grateful for those who appreciate and support my art, but that I FIGHT and push through all kinds of resistance to put together experiences that mean something for all of us,” she wrote. “I love being able to bring these performances to you!”

Hill’s “Miseducation Anniversary Tour” features not just herself, but also her fellow Fugees members Pras and Wyclef Jean. It was scheduled to stop in Pa. on Aug. 21 at TD Pavilion at The Mann in Philadelphia.

“I appreciate your understanding. We’re looking forward to performing at the shows in the UK and Europe in October — and for our fans in North America, when these unforeseen circumstances are resolved, we’ll be back in full force,” Hill concluded.
