Those wanting to participate in this program will spend four to five days of their tour helping make a difference by volunteering in various ways to improve the lives of those living in remote and poor communities.

They also have a local employment policy, and high standards of training ensuring that employees and guides greet travelers with unparalleled enthusiasm and experience.

India’s huge landmass, long latitudinal span and range of elevations make for a wide variety of different climatic zones. Major factors moderating India’s climate are its mountain ranges, extensive coastline and the seasonally reversing prevailing winds to which the subcontinent is subjected.

India is the world’s best example of a monsoon climate, in which alternating wet/dry periods are caused by the seasonal reversal of prevailing winds. The wet/dry monsoon pattern creates three major seasons for most of India: a hot wet season from mid-June to late-September; a cool dry season from October to February; and a hot dry season from March to mid-June.

During the pre-monsoon, early monsoon and post-monsoon, India’s coastal regions are often battered with fierce tropical cyclones coming off the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea. The fairly reliable patterns of rainfall brought by the monsoon cycle play a crucial role in Indian agriculture, but poor rainfall years and improper irrigation unfortunately leads to occasional years of drought in which whole crops can fail in some regions.

The rugged spine of the Himalaya in India’s northernmost reaches acts as a giant buffer, protecting India from the extreme cold of the Central Asian plateau and trapping moisture from the monsoon within the subcontinent.

Temperatures are generally highest in May/June and September/October, just before and after the southwest monsoon brings heavy rainfall. The moderating effects of the ocean bring significantly smaller temperature ranges to the coastal regions compared to the much wider temperature ranges of the interior regions and higher elevations.

In Delhi, average daily temperatures range from a minimum of 7.8°C (46°F) to a maximum of 20.8°C (82°F) in January, to a minimum of 28.3°C (83°F) to a maximum of 39.4°C (103°F) in June.

In Mumbai, average daily temperatures range from a minimum of 16.7°C (62°F) to a maximum of 30.7°C (87°F) in January, to a minimum of 26.4°C (80°F) to a maximum of 33.3°C (92°F) in June.

Time in India

India is +5 and a half hours ahead of UTC/GMT

Hindi (41%); Bengali (8.1%); Telugu (7.2%); Marathi (7%); Tamil (5.9%); Urdu (5%); Gujarati (4.5%); Kannada (3.7%); Malayalam (3.2%); Oriya (3.2%); Punjabi (2.8%); Assamese (1.3%); Maithili (1.2%); Other (5.9%), including Kashmiri, Sindhi and Sanskrit

As befitting a nation of such ethnic diversity, India is home to huge linguistic diversity. Most Indians are multilingual and many people speak a great number of different languages

Hindi is India’s most widely spoken and official language, and the primary language of 41% of the population. Along with Hindi are another 22 different official/recognised languages, plus hundreds of other major and minor languages and regional variations/dialects

English is an “associate official language” and India’s most common lingua franca, and is widely spoken in business, law, politics, education and tourism. Hindustani is India’s second most common lingua franca, but is considered technically to be a variation/combination of Hindi/Urdu languages, rather than an official language itself

Indian Rupee

We recommend that you bring a small reserve of US dollars (in cash) as it is readily accepted over other currencies in India. For the purposes of foreign exchange most major currencies are accepted by foreign exchange bureaus and banks.

Credit cards and ATM are available in most large cities and hotels, however it is not recommended to rely on these solely. Always keep a watch when your card is being processed and please note that you will be surcharged for the use of your card.

International Dialing Code

Type C plug

Electricity in India is 230 Volts, at 50 hertz. The most common pin type is C. (2 round prong).

Visas are required to enter India and visitors from some countries (including Australia, New Zealand, United States, Canada and United Kingdom) can obtain an online visa, the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) prior to arrival. For stays of less than 30 days, travellers can apply for an ETA online (approximately US$10 -25 for most nationalities) at the official website https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/tvoa.html no less than four days and no more than 30 days before the date of arrival in India.

Note your passport must be machine readable or you will be denied entry.

Your safety is our number one concern. Our safety track record is exemplary thanks to careful management and thorough consultation with local partners. Our industry leading risk management procedures have become a skill that we continue to refine. Our leaders in the field are highly trained and have safety as their number one priority. Expert leaders, risk assessments, quality inclusions and your financial security all come standard when you travel with us.

Please refer to our Travel Advisory page for updates on recent events, travel warnings and advice.

We strongly recommend that all clients take out travel insurance at the time of booking to cover against sickness, accident, loss of baggage, unexpected alterations to travel arrangements and travel disruption, emergency evacuation, cancellations, etc. Insurance information is enclosed with your pre-departure information. Please contact us if you would like to obtain a quote for your trip duration.

We suggest that you consult your doctor, local government inoculation centre or a travel medical specialist in order to get the most current advice regarding vaccination requirements.

Money and valuables should always be stored safely when travelling. Keep your passport with you at all times and do not leave it in your main luggage. You will need it to change money and check into hotels. Where safety deposit boxes are available, we recommend that you use them. Keep jewellery and valuables to a minimum.

In 1975, we laced up our hiking boots and hit the Himalayan trails with our first group of trekkers to Nepal. Our philosophy was a simple one; to provide extraordinary adventures for small groups of travellers with a keen focus on responsible tourism and providing support to local communities. We haven’t slowed down since.  Today, our itineraries span every continent, offering a range of authentic adventures from multi-day treks and cultural journeys to cycle journeys and mountaineering expeditions. As we have evolved, so too have our Responsible Travel initiatives that remain at the heart of our global operations. Russian Far East

Russia is a huge country, covering nine time zones. In Chukotka – the north-eastern most region of Russia, they have a saying “God is a long way up there, but Moscow is even further away” that is true in so many respects. The Russian Far East is unique, the culture, the climate, the history, the wildlife; it is a world away from the Russia you might have explored. At Heritage Expeditions we have had a long association with the Russian Far East. Since 1993 when we began chartering our ship from this region, we listened to our crew’s accounts of the magnificent wildlife and wilderness so eight years ago decided to see the Far East of Russia for ourselves. The stories were true! The Russian Far East is an incredibly amazing place and we are eager to share it with like-minded adventurers. Travellers who are looking for a genuine experience, a journey not a tour, a destination which hasn’t been organised and commercialised, a wilderness where we must travel on nature's terms and not on timetables. We pioneered Expedition Cruising to the Subantarctic and Antarctica. Expedition Cruising is also the perfect style of travel for the Russian Far East, where there are virtually no roads and very little infrastructure. We have developed strong relationships with individuals and organisations that make our expeditions possible. We have made a conscious effort to ensure that the expeditions benefit the local communities. We use local services and employ local people where possible.

Here, you will find very unique expedition wilderness cruises, all exploring a different part of the Russian Far East from the Kuril Islands in the south, to  Wrangel Island in the north. It is impossible to single out one expedition as being better than the other. If you are not sure which is the most suitable expedition for you, please check our website for this past season's expedition logs for an idea of what we accomplished.

Explore the Pacific Ring of Fire on  Russia's Ring of Fire , the volcanic Kuril Islands are rich in seabirds and cetaceans. Travel north up the Kamchatka Coast on our expedition,  Siberia's Forgotten Coast . Past expeditions were wildlife packed with walrus, brown bear, beluga whales, steller's sea eagles, spoon-billed sandpiper sightings and much more. On our  Chukotka  expedition we will have the great opportunity to celebrate with the local people as they hold their 'Beringia Arctic Games', before heading north towards Wrangel Island. Our  Across the Top of the World  expedition to Polar Bear denning capital of the world Wrangel Island continues to get rave reviews from amazing Polar Bear encounters and offers the rare opportunity to stay on the island with the rangers on our 2-night Overland Traverse and 10-night Ultimate High Arctic Expedition . Our  Jewel of the Russian Far East  expedition returns and provides the perfect way to see the autumn colours as we cruise from Anadyr to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy.

Heritage Expeditions operates charter flights from Nome, Alaska for The Northern Sea Route, otherwise there are connections via Moscow and Asia. View our list of suggested flight options here .

Moldova's parliament has voted to hold a referendum on European Union membership in October.

The proposed referendum date of October 20 was backed by a total of 56 members in the 101-member assembly.

For context: Like Ukraine before it was invaded in February 2022, Moldova is a former Soviet country leaning towards the West. President Maia Sandu has long indicated that she wants to steer the country towards EU membership.

Concern has grown during the war that Moldova could be next in Russia's sights as it seeks to regain control over former Soviet states.

The breakaway region of Transnistria in eastern Moldova recently appealed for Moscow's help to protect it against what it claims are threats from Moldova's government.

The US has imposed further sanctions on two Russian individuals and three companies in Moscow for facilitating arms transfers between Russia and North Korea.

It is the latest round of sanctions imposed by the US to disrupt and expose arms transfers between the two countries, including the transfer and testing of North Korean-produced ballistic missiles to Russia.

A statement from the US treasury for terrorism and financial intelligence named individuals and firms including Trans Kapital Limited Liability Company, the Rafort Limited Liability Company and Tekhnologiya.

It said the individuals and firms targeted had attempted to evade sanctions by using front companies to move military equipment to support the war in Ukraine.

"Today's action reflects our commitment to disrupt the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea deepening military cooperation with Russia," Brian Nelson, the under-secretary of the US said in a statement.

"The United States will continue to take action to hold accountable those who seek to facilitate the shipment of weapons and other material to enable Russia's war," Mr Nelson added.

Denmark has announced it will send a new military aid package to Ukraine, worth around 5.6bn Danish crowns (approximately £699m).

Troels Lund Poulsen, Denmark's defence minister, said the packages includes primarily air defence and artillery.

He said it was Denmark's 14th package to the country.

In the Kharkiv region, where Ukrainian soldiers are fighting to hold back two Russian fronts, operators man drones from a trench.

A member of Achilles battalion, 92nd brigade, can be seen emerging, carrying a first-person view drone before lift off.

Back inside the wooden walls, another operator wears goggles allowing him to steer the weapon.

Russia has said it has expelled British defence attache Adrian Coghill in retaliation for the UK's announcement it was kicking out his Russian counterpart last week.

Mr Coghill was reportedly called to the Russian embassy, where he was told of his expulsion.

The Russian foreign ministry called Britain's actions "unfriendly"and "anti-Russian" and said retaliatory measures from Moscow will not end here.

"The initiators of the escalation will be informed about further retaliatory steps," the ministry said.

On 8 May, Britain announced that it would expel the Russian defence attache, remove diplomatic status from some properties and limit the length of Russian diplomatic visas in response to what Home Secretary James Cleverly called Moscow's "malign activity".

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said all they need is two Patriot systems and to stop Russia from occupying the Kharkiv region.

Speaking to ABC News during a visit to the embattled region, the Ukrainian president said the country "cannot afford to lose Kharkiv" and "needs help now" to save it from occupation.

"The situation is very serious," Mr Zelenskyy said.

Moscow launched a fresh incursion across the border into Kharkiv last Friday, forcing 8,000 people to flee their homes.

It comes after the announcement of a further $2bn in US aid  - on top of the $61bn already promised.

US secretary of state Antony Blinken said yesterday that Washington is "focused" on sending Patriot missile systems and other forms of critical air defence to Ukraine.

The Patriot, is a surface-to-air missile defence system and considered one of the most advanced air defence systems in the US.

Earlier this month, Germany also pledged an additional Patriot battery, while Spain said it will deliver anti-aircraft Patriot missiles.

A Russian activist living in exile in Georgia has sounded alarm over a bill dubbed "the Russian law".

Over the past month, thousands of Georgian protesters have taken to the streets to voice their opposition to a draft law on "foreign agents".

Critics call it a copycat of Russian legislation that has been wielded for more than a decade to target critics of Vladimir Putin's Kremlin.

If it passes, charities receiving at least 20% of their funding from abroad will have to register with the government as "foreign agents" and submit onerous financial reports.

Grigory Sverdlin, 43, was himself branded a "foreign agent" by the Russian government last September in connection with a non-profit he runs from Georgia advising Russian men on how to avoid military conscription.

"Georgia has just adopted the same 'foreign agents act' using the very same arguments. It is quite obvious that this act will be used to oppress dissidents," he told Reuters.

"I think a lot of people in Georgia want to move along a different path - they want to move towards European integration."

The Georgian government says the law - which cleared parliament on Tuesday and now heads to Georgia's president for review - is needed to ensure transparency in the foreign financing of non-profit organisations.

The Kremlin has denied any association with the bill.

Back in China, and Vladimir Putin is continuing his state visit, hosted by Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

He laid a wreath at the Monument to the People's Heroes at Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

Then he attended a gala event celebrating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations forged between the former Soviet Union and the Peoples Republic of China, which was established following a civil war in 1949.

By Ivor Bennett, Moscow correspondent

There's obviously a great deal of symbolism to this visit.

The banquet, the tea ceremony, the walk in the park - Xi and Putin are closer than ever, and they want the world to see it.

Their message is that it's time for a new global order, that isn't dominated by the West.

The Kremlin also wants to tell those watching back home that Russia isn't alone. That it no longer needs Europe.

But the primary aim for Putin here is more pragmatic. It's about the economy.

The war in Ukraine has left Russia isolated from Western markets, and it needs China to keep it afloat.

So far, Beijing's been more than happy to buy discounted Russian energy, which has proved a lifeline for Moscow.

A tidal wave of Chinese goods has come the other way, which has kept the shelves stocked for consumers and softened the impact of sanctions.

For now, Russia's economy is growing. It's forecast to expand more than 3% this year. But for how much longer?

There are labour shortages in key sectors, like oil and gas. The losses on the frontline have exacerbated a demographic crisis, and the brain-drain that followed the invasion has affected the quality of the workforce.

What's more, the war is fast turning into a money pit for Moscow. Defence spending is projected to reach nearly 9% of GDP this year.

That explains the recent reshuffle of Putin's top team, in which he replaced his defence minister with an economist.

He wants to ensure Russia can continue to afford the war for as long as it takes.

And that's where China comes in.

The delegation accompanying Putin speaks volumes: both new and old defence ministers, his finance minister, central bank governor, oil bosses and oligarchs, and more.

Putin will be pushing for more support for Russia's war economy. The West will be scrutinising what form that support takes.

Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping announced their new "new era" strategic partnership agreement in a statement topping 7,000 words.

Earlier, we took you through the key points regarding the Ukraine war (see our 10.52am post), but there were other important sections regarding international relations.

Following are the key points:

Ukraine war: "The Russian side positively assesses China's objective and unbiased position on the Ukrainian issue."

China "supports the efforts of the Russian side to ensure security and stability, national development and prosperity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and opposes outside interference in Russia's internal affairs."

United States: Russia and China have serious concerns at "US attempts to violate the strategic balance", including the development of high-precision non-nuclear weapons for potential "decapitation" strikes, and plans to deploy ground-based missiles in the Asia-Pacific and European regions.

North Korea:  "The parties oppose the actions of intimidation in the military sphere carried out by the United States and its allies, which provoke further confrontation with the DPRK."

Industry: Develop civil aircraft construction, shipbuilding, carmakers, machine tool industry, electronics industry, metallurgy, iron ore mining, chemical industry and forestry.

Agriculture: Expand mutual access of agricultural products, increase the volume of trade in soybeans, pig breeding, water production, grain, fat and oil, fruits and vegetables, nuts and other products.

Technology:  Develop cooperation in information and communication technologies, including artificial intelligence, software, and network and data security.

Nuclear: Deepen partnership in peaceful nuclear energy, including thermonuclear fusion, fast neutron reactors and the closed nuclear fuel cycle.

Is it safe to travel to France? The latest advice

T he French government has raised its terror alert to the highest possible level, “emergency”, following the terror attack in Moscow that left more than 135 people dead.

French prime minister Gabriel Attal said the decision was taken “in light of the Islamic State’s claiming responsibility for the [Moscow] attack and the threats weighing on our country”.

France’s terror threat system has three levels. The highest level is announced if there is a terrorist attack in France or overseas, or if an attack on French soil is considered to be imminent.

France was already on high alert for potential terrorist attacks, with the Paris Olympics and Paralympics due to take place in the capital this summer.

The updated terror alert comes just days before the UK Easter school holidays, when thousands of British holidaymakers will travel across the Channel for a getaway.

What is the Foreign Office advice for France?

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) France advice, which was last updated on February 20, reads: “There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. You should remain vigilant at all times.”

“Methods of attack have included knife attacks, shootings, bombings and vehicle attacks. Be vigilant in public places and follow the advice of local French authorities,” the FCDO adds.

The FCDO lists shopping centres, entertainment establishments, cultural events, public transport and places of worship as settings where “indiscriminate” terrorism attacks could take place.

Check the France FCDO page for the latest advice.

What happened in the Moscow terror attack?

On Friday, terrorists carried out an attack at the Crocus City Hall on the outskirts of Moscow, killing at least 137 and injuring 140.

Four men, all of whom are citizens of Tajikistan, have been formally charged with committing a group terrorist attack. The attack has been claimed by the Afghanistan-based Islamic State Khorasan Province (IS-K) group.

On March 7, the United States warned its citizens in Russia that extremists had “imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow” and specifically mentioned concert venues. It advised Americans to avoid large gatherings.

What should I do if I get caught up in a terrorist attack?

Britain’s counter-terrorism police gives advice on what to do in the event of an emergency . This includes to run to a place of safety: “This is better than trying to surrender or negotiate.” To hide: “It is better to hide than confront. Barricade yourself in, turn your phone to silent and use only when it is safe to do so.” And to tell: “Make sure you know the local emergency numbers in the country you are travelling to. For all EU countries call 112.”

Have there been recent terrorist attacks in France?

There have been a number of terrorist attacks in France over the past decade. In January 2015, eight cartoonists, two guests and two police officers were murdered at the offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo . The gunmen identified as belonging to al-Qaeda.

In November that year, in the deadliest terrorist attack in French history, 131 people were killed and 413 were injured in a series of shooting and grenade attacks at the Bataclan music venue, near the Stade de France and at several restaurants and bars across Paris. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks.

In July 2016, 86 people were killed and 434 injured in Nice after a 19-tonne cargo truck was driven into crowds during Bastille Day celebrations on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. Again Islamic State claimed responsibility.

What if I want to cancel my trip to France?

If you have booked a package holiday to France and want to cancel your trip for any reason, contact your tour operator and they might offer flexibility with alternative dates.

But bear in mind that, because the Foreign Office has not issued any advice against travel to France, there is no guarantee that you will receive a refund, nor will you be able to claim money back with your travel insurance company.

If you have booked flights and accommodation independently, and wish to cancel your holiday, contact your travel providers as soon as possible to see if you can rearrange your plans. Note, however, that given the circumstances, it is unlikely you will receive a full refund.
