Globus

  • Excellent - 74,902 reviews for UK and Great Britain tours
I could not say enough goid things about Janette. She was well organized, kept us all awsre of what we could expect, extremely knowledgeable, and well informed of yhe history of thevplaces that we went to. The only complsint was one of the side events that we went to was very hard for my wife to climb and we were not made aware of that ahead of time when it was too late to do anything about it. Also the schedule was a bit hectic on older people and several of us were complaining to each other about being worn out about the fifth day. The bus driver was very good at driving but not very friendly at all.
The Edinburgh to London tour was great! It was an amazing experience. The Globus representatives in Edinburgh and London were very helpful and nice.

Costsaver

We’ll planned and we’ll informed once on the trip
Gino was an excellent tour director his knowledge about each place we visited was amazing he also went that extra mile for us. We had a small group of 25 who all got on so well will definitely be recommending this tour.

We really enjoyed our time on this trip!
Amazing. The hosts were polite and knowledgeable. But firm when they needed to be as some travellers were not showing up on time.

Best tour guide ever! We have been on many tours and Luke really went above and beyond. He is passionate, knowledgeable, funny, organized, and energetic. He gave us tons of history which really enriched the tour. He was always positive and made sure everyone was having a great time. If you have an opportunity to take a tour with Luke, definitely do it!
Everything was great

Trafalgar

  • Excellent - 1,925 reviews for UK and Great Britain tours
A well organised tour with excellent tour director and very safe driver.
Was an excellent trip. Rose, our tour guide was awesome! She was very personable, funny, knowledgeable about all things UK and had great suggestions for free time. Jason our coach driver, was an excellent driver, extremely helpful and all around nice. Even our one day driver Daniel was great. Jason was required to take a day off. I would recommed this trip to anyone looking to go to the UK. Also, I would recommend Trafaglar to anyone looking to take a tour of another country.

Cosmos

  • Excellent - 19,675 reviews for UK and Great Britain tours
Fiona was our wonderful tour guide and her knowledge and stories along the way were very interesting. Juergen, our driver was great and very personable. We toured lovely Ireland and gorgeous Scotland, and saw just enough to satisfy our curiosity about both countries. The accommodations were good and I would highly recommend this tour.
Really great tour, it was well planned and the sights and places we saw were fantastic. The tour guide was really knowledgeable, and he passed on so much information to us, he was incredible. The bus driver too was very good and drove safely.

Insight Vacations

Insight Vacations

  • Excellent - 645 reviews for UK and Great Britain tours
Greg Colgin was our travel director and made the trip memorable. He is knowledgeable, caring, extremely organized, and concerned about our wellbeing. He made the trip fun with his little extras. The itinerary was good. We saw a lot in the amount of time we had.
Greg was positive, knowledgeable, fun, and very organized. He provided creativity, kept our time as very fun and informative. Wanted to make sure he was available to answer questions and to meet everybody’s needs.

Haggis Adventures

Haggis Adventures

  • Excellent - 1,972 reviews for UK and Great Britain tours
Lovely 5 days packed full of history and beautiful scenery with tour guide Ryan keeping us entertained with stories.
This trip was absolutely amazing. Thanks to our amazing tour guides Dusty, Chris and Torva. You'll hear the most amazing myths and legends and learn alot about Scotland's history along the way. We saw the most amazing scenery and breathtaking views. I definitely recommend this tour from Haggis Adventures!

Ik had Marc, en hij was echt geweldig! Ik had het zo’n naar m’n zin, Marc wist zoveel te vertellen en had geweldige verhalen. Zeker een aanrader.
Had a great time on this tour. The guide was really informative and funny and just a genuinely good dude. Skye is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. Such an amazing place with a powerful history.

Contiki

  • Excellent - 5,600 reviews for UK and Great Britain tours
Embarking on my first solo Contiki tour was both thrilling and nerve-wracking, but our guide made the entire experience unforgettable from the very start. Her vibrant personality and welcoming nature immediately put everyone at ease, transforming our group into a close-knit community. Her talent for uniting people was unparalleled. With her infectious energy and clever puns, she had a way of making every day feel special and fun. She knew exactly how to balance moments of laughter with informative insights, ensuring we all felt engaged and excited. No challenge was too big for her. Whether it was addressing individual concerns or managing group dynamics, she handled everything with grace and efficiency. Her commitment to our enjoyment was evident, always making time for us and prioritizing our experience. Her extensive knowledge about each destination added incredible depth to our journey. She shared captivating stories and took us to hidden gems that we would have never discovered on our own. Her passion for the places we visited was truly inspiring. Saying goodbye was tough, as we had all formed such strong bonds and unforgettable memories. Even after the trip, she kept in touch, showing genuine care for everyone in the group. I can't wait for the chance to travel with her again.
Everything was beautiful. Some of the sights we saw were incredible, driving through so many countries in such a short amount of time. The people we met were amazing and I’m very keen to keep in touch with our group. I seriously did make lifelong friends in 9 days. Our CONNTIKKIII guide Emily was amazing, so organised and so fun and friendly. My partner and I were lucky enough to sit up the front of the bus next to her for the whole trip which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Intertrips

  • Excellent - 30 reviews for UK and Great Britain tours
While the travel and hotels was well organized, I was disappointed that I was not told before hand that it was a bilingual tour. There was very little English commentary throughout. Would only suggest this tour if you want to go around places and are happy to do self reading.
Jose the tourist guide was excellent, the hotels except for the last one were very good, the landscape and scenery was amazing, very recommended

Loved Derment and he tried very hard to help people . Great personality . Good driver - organised our Group chat which bonded us well - a few accoms I think below the standard - please can we ask host to supply a top sheet not just quilt as it was too hot and little air in most rooms . Anne was so brilliant on our day with her and David a delight .David great driver too. Lovely meeting you Mick and appreciate your interest in our response -
On time fabulous driver and guide. Very good accommodation. We were very well informed and looked after.

Highland Experience Tours

Highland Experience Tours

  • Excellent - 223 reviews for UK and Great Britain tours
Rose was an amazing guide. She went beyond all expectations to ensure her group were looked after. I thoroughly recommend this tour
The tour guide, Neal, was excellent. Stops were just that...very short and not time enough to actually peruse the sites. The lodging was absolutely the most horrible experience ever! The Coos B & B was extremely impersonal. I did not get breakfast because my email and wifi didn't work. I got the order in at 7:03 pm and misspelled the email address we were to send the order to. I forwarded the original email to Andrea but he said I didn't follow proper procedure for ordering. He said I could get what's left of the continental breakfast at 8:30 but we had to leave at 8:40. The room was stuffy and uncomfortable.

The 10 day tour was great! Ireland is absolutely beautiful and this tour allowed me to see the things I wanted. I made life long friends with my tour group. It was an amazing experience
This tour was incredible. The driver/guide, Noel made it extra special. He was very knowledgable and charismatic. The hiking, biking and kayaking activities kept us moving while exploring this beautiful country.

Irish Experience Tours

Excellent itinerary despite no group time in Dublin.
The tour was wonderful. Enjoyed all of the places that we visited. Only exception was the day that Antony treated the whole bus as if we were children, and told us that he would not tolerate a situation that came up.

A new survey of more than 8,000 UK travellers has ranked the best and worst package holiday providers in the UK.

Topping the list by from consumer champions Which ? Travel were budget breaks specialist Jet2 Holidays and global tour operator Kuoni.

Operators at the bottom of the pack included Best At Travel and flight and hotel provider eDreams, both criticised by respondents for poor service.

The survey of 8,361 UK adults was conducted in September 2022, with respondents asked about holidays taken since September 2019. Which? analysts then contrasted each operator’s ratings with their average price per day, based on both short haul and long haul holidays.

Along with Jet2 Holidays and Kuoni, long-established tour operator Trailfinders, ski and Lapland specialist Inghams and the UK’s largest independent travel agent, Hays Travel, also made the top five.

Jet2 and Kuoni received a customer satisfaction score of 84 per cent, while Trailfinders scored 82 per cent, Ingham’s 81 and Hays Travel 80 per cent.

Virgin Holidays was sixth on the list, also scoring 80 per cent, while British Airways Holidays was 13th, scoring 75 per cent. EasyJet holidays was ranked 19th of the 25 operators reviewed, scoring 73 per cent.

Online provider eDreams came bottom of the 25 operators ranked, receiving just two stars for how their holidays matched up with what was advertised. Despite being the cheapest in the survey, said Which? , the online agent scored just three out of five stars for value for money.

Best At Travel fell short on customer service and product description matching reality according to those surveyed, although it achieved an overall satisfaction score of 64 per cent.

Tui, despite having a similar offering to Jet2, was ranked 17th on the list by Which? , with the same satisfaction score (74 per cent) as online travel agents Expedia and On the Beach.

Which? said respondents had rated the holiday companies on criteria including the standard of customer service they received, how well descriptions of the holiday matched the reality, how well their trip was organised and value for money.

Praise for Jet2holidays included passengers saying, “you don’t feel like you’re just one of a herd”.

Several respondents said they were repeat customers of the firm owing to its reliability and consistently high levels of service, with one traveller remarking they “always” use Jet2 and they’ve “never been let down”.

Kuoni attracted similarly glowing comments, with one traveller saying the firm was “prepared to work with us to get exactly the holiday we wanted”, and another adding: “nothing was too much trouble - they went the extra mile.”

An eDreams spokesperson said it offers “dynamic packages” selected by the user rather than curated by the provider, so it was “not accurate” to compare it to “other companies that specialise in a more traditional package holiday offering”.

Meanwhile, a Tui spokesperson said: “This tiny survey isn’t at all reflective of the feedback we receive from our customers who enjoy holidaying with us every year”.

The UK’s best and worst holiday providers, according to Which?:

  • Jet2 Holidays / Kuoni (84 per cent satisfaction)
  • Trailfinders (82 per cent)
  • Inghams (81 per cent)
  • Hays Travel (80 per cent)
  • Virgin Holidays (80 per cent)
  • Barrhead Travel (79 per cent)
  • Secret Escapes (79 per cent)
  • Club Med (78 per cent)
  • Saga (78 per cent)
  • Mercury Holidays (77 per cent)
  • Travel Republic (77 per cent)
  • First Choice (76 per cent)
  • British Airways Holidays (75 per cent)
  • Co-Op Travel (75 per cent)

14 sustainable travel companies you can feel good about booking with

Do some good while seeing the world when you book with these ethical and sustainable travel companies

Karen Edwards

While we don’t want to labour on the negatives, you don’t need to be an expert or activist to understand that we are in a climate pinch. It seems a little contradictory to fear for the future while excitedly encouraging international travel, but we humans are an innovative bunch. Exploring the globe doesn’t need to be devastating, and being a responsible traveller doesn’t mean lectures and negativity. Whether you call it eco-travel, sustainable, ethical, regenerative or eco-travel, there is plenty to get excited about.

An increasing number of sustainable travel companies are creating itineraries that allow curious minds to see the world while keeping the impact down. The experiences are awe-inspiring, from hiking remote mountaintops to embracing the world’s most impressive national parks, allowing visitors to engage with destinations in a way that extends far beyond the superficial. If you’re looking for an ethical and environmentally driven travel company for your next adventure, look no further.

Sustainable travel companies

1.  byway travel.

Byway Travel

In an ambitious mission statement, UK travel platform Byway declares that its goal is to make flight-free holidays a mainstream holiday choice. Their way of doing so? By helping people discover the beauty of slow, overland travel across the British Isles and Europe . Founder and CEO Cat Jones launched the now B Corporation-certified company during the first Covid lockdown, determined to find a way to reduce flight emissions. Her explanation was simple: If we continue on the current trajectory, emissions from flying are due to triple by 2050.

2.  Gondwana Ecotours

Named after the ancient supercontinent that gradually split to become the land masses we recognize today, Gondwana Ecotours says its mission is to bring people from different continents closer together, one trip at a time. The New Orleans -based company specializes in small group and private tours that take on exhilarating experiences around the globe, such as gorilla trekking in Rwanda and eco-adventures in Patagonia and Mendoza.

A key component of Gondwana is its network of guides who live in the communities visited, adding personal knowledge, depth and authenticity to the experience while providing tourism-generated income. The company is also committed to limiting its carbon footprint through sustainable travel practices and is recognized for offsetting more than 580 tons of carbon emissions. Since 2021, its tours have been 100-percent carbon-neutral, as certified by the Cooler emissions tracking organization.

3.  Intrepid Travel

Intrepid Travel

Australian-owned Intrepid has always been forthright in declaring its commitment to ethical and responsible practices. In 2018, it became one of the first global travel operators to be B Corporation-certified. Since 2010, it has been operating as the world’s largest carbon-neutral company, carefully measuring and offsetting all unavoidable carbon emissions for 13 years.

Their trips are just as impressive. From 15-day expeditions traversing the extraordinary gorges and remote villages of northern Pakistan’s Hunza Valley to nine-day itineraries centred around baby gorilla naming ceremonies in Rwanda’s spectacular Volcanoes National Park, Intrepid offer true bucket list travel adventures suited to guests of all interests and abilities. In 2020, as a part of the Tourism Declares A Climate Emergency initiative, the company published a seven-point climate commitment plan – revealing its intention to transition to 100% renewable energy use in offices by 2025 and on all trips by 2030.

4.  Experience Travel Group

Experience Travel Group

Operating on the belief that ‘travel should be about reciprocation’, Asia travel specialist Experience Travel Group holds responsible travel at its core, enabling guests to interact with the community and experience real cultural immersion on every trip. Another B Corporation-certified company, the team is dedicated to creating experiences that divert away from trendy hubs and big hotels. Instead, they build personalised itineraries with initiatives to give back to the community included in the package.

On adventures in Indonesia , Laos, Cambodia , Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam , for example, guests can enjoy delicious local dishes at ‘social enterprise’ restaurants that support vulnerable young people through job training and employment. In Cambodia, a trip to the Phare Circus in Siem Reap sends funds directly to a performing arts school for underprivileged children in nearby Battambang. A three-day hike along sections of Sri Lanka ’s Pekoe Trail follows the old horse and cart routes that carried tea to the ports, bringing vital income to little-visited communities.

5.  Seacology

Seacology

In 1990, American ethnobotanist Dr Paul Cox was conducting forest research in Samoa when village leaders told him 30,000 acres of pristine rainforest were about to be logged due to a government decree to fund a school. Cox was horrified and quickly devised a proposal to raise the needed money to conserve the forest in perpetuity. His plan worked and has come to define the Seacology model: Provide material benefits to villages that pledge to protect their natural resources.

Today, Seacology offers unique ecotourism adventures throughout the world’s islands, where travelers visit active projects, interact with local people and are part of the formula that helps conserve both habitats and communities. Seacology guests also explore intriguing island environments, from the coral reefs of  Fiji to the rainforests of Borneo, while staying at well-appointed resorts and visiting important cultural sites. With all this tropical splendour, expect plenty of opportunities to scuba dive, snorkel, hike and kayak.

6.  Discover Corps

Discover Corps is the leader in the rapidly growing field of 'volunteer vacations' focusing on children, schools, animals and wildlife conservation. Yes, 'voluntourism' has often become a buzzword to cash in on thinly veiled claims, earning criticism and scrutiny over the years. However, Discover Corps operates with complete transparency and has become something of a gold standard for the model.

Trip itineraries are designed to connect travellers to local communities and provide a deeper understanding of the culture, issues, and ways of life in locations around the world. Many projects are in Africa , Asia , and Latin America and can range from caring for elephants in Thailand to helping to protect the animals in South Africa's Greater Kruger National Park region.

7.  ROW Adventures

ROW Adventures

From its beginnings as a whitewater rafting company in the US's Pacific Northwest, ROW Adventures has evolved into an adventure travel company that advocates the transformative nature of human-powered experiences. According to ROW, connecting people with nature results in positive impacts, and the company adheres to conducting business in an inclusive and sustainable way while promoting social equity, environmental stewardship and accountability. Human-powered activities allow participants to fully observe the surroundings, whether white water rafting in Idaho's Salmon River, sea kayaking the orcas in Canada, or trekking across Machu Picchu.

ROW also recognizes that travel is a large contributor to the world’s carbon footprint and subsequently mitigates the impact by offsetting carbon-producing activities whenever possible. At the same time, trips also educate guests to be advocates for locations visited, with special recognition given to the awareness of Indigenous communities and honouring their legacies, lives and connections to the land.

8.  Natural Habitat Adventures

Natural Habitat Adventures

Conservation through exploration is the credo of Natural Habitat Adventures , the official travel partner of the World Wildlife Fund. Nat Hab, as it’s called, is committed to environmentally friendly nature travel, stressing that its travellers become a force for change in addressing the planet's most pressing conservation challenges. Polar bear tours in the Canadian Arctic , African safaris and South American nature tours are examples of the company’s itineraries where tourism dollars become an influential incentive for communities to protect their natural resources.

Nat Hab also acknowledges that its 8,000 annual travellers on all seven continents expend plenty of CO2. To mitigate travel’s carbon output, the company leans into offsetting measures. From 2007 to 2019, Nat Hab offset 49,418 tons of carbon dioxide and has become the world's first 100-percent carbon-neutral travel company. They’ve also provided more than $4.5 million to support WWF’s global conservation efforts and continue to give one-percent of gross sales plus $150,000 annually in support of WWF’s global mission.

9.  Cheeseman's Ecological Safaris

Ecology safaris catering to wildlife enthusiasts looking for an in-depth nature experience is what husband-and-wife founders Doug and Gail Cheeseman envisioned when they started their namesake company in 1980. Doug, a college zoology and ecology professor, and Gail, a naturalist, turned their passion for nature into a travel company focusing on comprehensive wildlife tours all over the globe. Working with local guides and wildlife researchers, tours are designed for hardcore animal lovers who are obsessed with travel and enjoy learning about the animals they encounter.

10.  Quark Expeditions

Quark Expeditions

Quark Expeditions co-founders Lars Wikander and Mike McDowell took the first group of commercial travellers to the North Pole in 1991, completing the first-ever tourism transit of the Northeast Passage. That inaugural expedition proved a game-changer and positioned the company at the forefront of polar explorations. In the three decades since, its polar travellers have visited remote parts of the Arctic and Antarctic.

With the Earth’s polar regions threatened by climate change, Quark is committed to raising awareness of these delicate ecosystems through environmentally responsible tourism. A facet of that commitment is the company’s Polar Promise to reduce its footprint and work with other industry leaders, as well as guests, to address the complex and challenging issues facing the regions. Coordinating with a global network of scientists, community leaders and sustainability innovators, the company plans to contribute a minimum of $500,000 each year in support of key environmental initiatives and sustainable development projects.

Major disruption as travel company cancels all holidays to July 26

Holidaymakers in the UK could see their plans thrown into chaos and their UK travel agent will be in touch if they need to make changes

  • 07:49, 27 JUN 2024

UK holidaymakers could have plans disrupted as a major holiday provider which supplies travel agents cancelled all bookings for July

A leading travel firm, Youtravel, has announced that all bookings up to and including 26 July will be cancelled. The company described the decision to extend cancellations beyond 5 July as 'difficult', as discussions to secure its future are ongoing.

Youtravel is a subsidiary of the German company FTI Group, whose tour operator brand, FTI Touristik, declared insolvency earlier this month. This could potentially disrupt the travel plans of thousands of UK holidaymakers who use products provided by the group.

The company confirmed that all active bookings for arrivals up to and including 26 July would be cancelled without charge by Monday 1 July. This leaves UK travel agents with just a few days to make alternative arrangements for travellers who have booked accommodation via Youtravel.

Any issues will be communicated to travellers by their respective booking agents in the coming days.

FTI Touristik, one of Europe's largest travel firms, filed for insolvency at the beginning of the month. Youtravel acknowledged that the impact on its business and operations had been "significant", reports the Express .

In a statement, Youtravel expressed its gratitude to all its partners for their unwavering support and patience since the announcement on 3rd June 2024.

"The insolvency of FTI Touristik GmbH has had a significant impact on Youtravel.com. Over the past three weeks, our management has been actively engaging with the appointed administrator of the FTI group and undergoing the MandA [mergers and acquisition] process to secure our future."

"Whilst we are hopeful for a positive conclusion to these talks soon, we have made the difficult decision to cancel all bookings until and including the 26th July 2024."

"We understand the inconvenience this may cause and sincerely apologise for any disruption. Any active bookings in the Youtravel system for arrivals up to and including 26 July will be automatically cancelled without any charges by Monday 1 July."

Bookings from 27 July remain active and will be subject to the usual cancellation charges.

"Our teams are fully operational, and our dedicated task force is here to provide support to our partners during this challenging period," added Youtravel. It added: "Our teams are fully operational, and our dedicated taskforce is here to provide support to our partners during this challenging period. Alternatively, you can contact your account manager for any queries or concerns."

"We will continue to keep you updated as soon as we have any further news regarding the future of Youtravel.com. We want to express our gratitude to all our partners for their unwavering support and patience since the [FTI] announcement on the 3 June."

The Data Appeal Company: Insights into Mediterranean tourism beyond summer 2024

Lalaria Beach, Skiathos, Greece

The Data Appeal Company’s report on post-summer 2024 tourism trends in France, Greece, Italy, and Spain reveals varied national responses to off-peak travel, highlighting shifts in visitor demographics and accommodation prices.

FLORENCE – The Data Appeal Company , part of the Almawave Group , has released a new comprehensive report detailing the post-summer 2024 tourism trends and forecasts for France, Greece, Italy, and Spain. The analysis, conducted with the destination marketing & management platform D / AI Destinations, highlights significant patterns and market dynamics as the high summer season winds down, offering valuable insights for the travel and hospitality industry. This report explores tourism trends, OTA rates, and Global Distribution System (GDS) flights in September and October, comparing them to the bustling summer months. Some of the key findings from the new study include:

  • Italy and Spain: Both countries show similar trends where the primary market in August is domestic, which declines by 9-10% in September and October. Italy stands out as the only country where GDS bookings in September exceed those in August.
  • Greece: Unlike the other countries analyzed, Greece sees the vast majority of its visitors coming from international markets during both high and low seasons.
  • France: The Olympics have a significant impact throughout the summer, with OTA rates surging from late July to early August and remaining stable until early October.
  • Americans and Germans: These two nationalities are the leading markets for GDS flight bookings to all analyzed destinations throughout September and October.

chart

“Our analysis confirms consistent post-summer season trends across all examined destinations with specific noted differences. The extension of the summer tourism season beyond expectations, as indicated by data following the peak in August, could have positive sustainability impacts by reducing the risk of summer overtourism” , explains  Damiano Meola , Director of Marketing at The Data Appeal Company. Meola emphasizes, “The decrease in accommodation prices across all analyzed countries in September and October presents an opportunity for budget-conscious travelers and a potential strategy to extend the tourism season”. He concludes that “the increase in visitors from diverse markets, particularly from the United States and Germany, during the off-peak season highlights a growing trend among travelers to avoid the congestion of August, opting for less crowded and potentially more economical periods”.

The Data Appeal Company specializes in collecting and analyzing online feedback, geographic, and contextual data. The company’s mission is to simplify data use and understanding, helping businesses and tourist destinations make informed decisions.

Highlights per country

If we delve into the study’s conclusions for each analyzed country, we encounter the case of  France , where the 2024 Olympics have significantly influenced tourism patterns, with a surge in OTA rates from late July to early August that remains stable until early October. This stability is notable as the domestic market sees only a slight decline (-3%) in September and October compared to August. French travelers tend to reduce international travel post-summer, while German and British tourists increase. Additionally, there is a noticeable rise in visitors from the USA and emerging Asian markets like South Korea and Japan. This trend indicates that France remains a strong attraction for international tourists beyond the summer peak, supported by the prolonged impact of the Olympics.

In the case of  Greece , this country stands out with a predominantly international tourist base, both in high and low seasons. Domestic visitors account for only 16% in August, dropping to 10% in September and October. This period coincides with a decline in Italian and French visitors who prefer August travel. Conversely, Americans and Germans see a rise in GDS flight bookings during these months. Hospitality rates in Greece continuously decrease from late August to October, reaching a 25% drop by late October. This pronounced seasonal fluctuation presents an opportunity for budget-conscious travelers to explore Greece in the less crowded off-season.

chart

Moving on to  Italy , it experiences a shift in tourist demographics post-August, with domestic tourism dropping by nearly 10% in September and October. The USA and Germany become the primary markets during these months, replacing the domestic dominance of August. Accommodation rates decrease by 15%, and the average length of stay shortens from 12.7 to 8.8 nights, indicating shorter visits by off-season travelers. Notably, Italy is the only country where GDS bookings in September surpass those in August, highlighting a steady demand from international tourists even as the summer ends. This trend suggests that Italy remains a favored destination for American and German tourists during the off-peak season.

Lastly, analyzing the case of  Spain , this country mirrors Italy in its post-summer tourism trends, with domestic travel decreasing by 9% in September and October. This drop is accompanied by a significant rise in tourists from Germany, Sweden, and Norway, whose numbers double compared to August. Accommodation rates in Spain fall by 16% during these months, with consistent weekend rate surges indicating a demand for short getaways. The data shows a shift from Southern European travelers in August to Northern Europeans in the following months. This trend underscores Spain’s appeal as a destination for weekend travelers and those looking to avoid the summer crowds while still enjoying favorable weather and reduced prices.

Americans and Germans as top foreign markets

In September and October, Americans emerge as the leading market for flight bookings to Italy (22%), Greece (21%), and France (14%), while also ranking as the third largest market in Spain (9%). This significant presence underscores the ongoing interest and travel flexibility of American tourists. Meanwhile, Germans closely follow, being the second largest market in Italy (11%), Spain (10.5%), and Greece (13%).

chart

The substantial influx of both American and German tourists during these months indicates a strategic shift towards off-peak travel, favoring less crowded destinations and more economical travel periods.

It can be hard to balance the demands of eating well without spending a lot.

In this series, we try to find the healthiest options in the supermarket for the best value - and have enlisted the help of  Sunna Van Kampen , founder of Tonic Health, who went viral on social media for reviewing food in the search of healthier choices. We also speak to dieticians each week.

It's important to note from the outset that in this series, we don't try to find the outright healthiest option, but help you get better nutritional value for as little money as possible.

With the weather finally getting warmer, this week we're looking at ice cream.

"With so many options out there, how do you fancy a 63% reduction in your sugar consumption and some savings for your wallet too?" says Sunna.

What's in our ice creams?

"Technically speaking, ice cream is just frozen milk and cream with a bit of added sweetness," Sunna says.

But as time has gone on, we've progressed to less and less cream and more and more sugar.

"To give you an example, Mars Bar Ice Cream is only 31% milk and cream, while the traditional Mackie's ice cream is 81% milk and cream," Sunna says.

"When you remove the cream, quite clearly you lose a lot of the creaminess and smooth texture, so manufacturers have turned to gums (like guar gum, locust bean gum, tara gum) to give the creaminess while lowering cost," he adds.

"The problem is some of these gums have demonstrated to be gut disruptive and hard to digest."

How much sugar can we eat?

The NHS recommends adults have 30g of sugar a day, with that decreasing to 24g for seven to 10-year-olds and 19g a day for four to six-year-olds.

"A cut in sugar is not just good news for our waistlines, but also for our overall health, contributing to a balanced diet without the same spikes in blood sugar levels," Sunna says.

Those spikes can cause sudden drops in energy, spates of hunger and potentially lead to type two diabetes.

How much sugar is in ice cream?

Let's look at some popular examples to compare the sugar content and the impact on your wallet...

  • Cadbury Flake 99: £4.25 for 4x125ml and 22.9g sugar per ice cream (5.5 teaspoons)
  • Magnum: £3.25 for 3x100ml - 20g of sugar per ice cream (five teaspoons)
  • Solero Exotic: £2.75 for 3x90ml - 12g of sugar per ice cream (three teaspoons)
  • Mars Ice Cream Bars: £2.75 for 4 x 49.5ml - 12g of sugar per ice cream (three teaspoons)
  • Cornetto Classic: £3.50 for 6x90ml - 10g of sugar per ice cream (2.5 teaspoons)
  • Milk Choc Ices: £1.60 for 6x70ml - 7.3g of sugar per ice cream (under two teaspoons)

"Assuming you have one ice cream a day across, hopefully, 30 days of sunny weather this summer, and you'll find yourself saving over 105 teaspoons of sugar from your diet this summer if you choose a Choc Ice over a Cadbury Flake 99," Sunna says.

That's a decent saving for your health - but what about your wallet?

"Choc Ice is firmly in the category of win-win, as it's 65% cheaper than a standard Magnum," he adds.

That's a considerable £24.30 saving over 30 ice creams.

The nutritionist's view - from Nichola Ludlam-Raine, dietitian at  nicsnutrition.com ...

"Shop-bought ice cream isn't a product that I recommend having daily, and luckily for the UK population this isn't something that is too hard to stick to, given the distinct lack of sunny, warm weather.

"I recently had a Mars ice cream and although I really enjoyed it. I needed two to feel satisfied, as they were so small - which doubled my sugar intake (to 24g).

"The good news, though, is not all the sugar quoted on the label is free or added sugar (and under 30g a day of this is acceptable within the context of a healthy balanced diet), as some sugar will be naturally occurring in the milk.

"Choosing ice creams where milk is the first ingredient is always preferable - or plant-based/fruit-based alternatives if you have a milk intolerance or allergy.

"The evidence regarding thickeners and emulsifiers on gut health is still in its infancy, and most of the studies are small and have been done on rodents, with relatively large amounts of the additives being used.

"Some emulsifiers may also confer benefits due to their prebiotic effects - but with gut health, the key is to add in more fibre, natural colour and plants."

Every week we take an overview of the mortgage market with industry experts, while the guys at Moneyfactscompare  round up the best rates...

We start this week with the exclusive interview Sky News' Ian King conducted with the chief executive of Lloyds Banking Group - the UK's biggest lender.

Charlie Nunn warned homeowners not to expect a return to the ultra-low interest rates seen for most of the last 16 years.

"We've just come off a decade where mortgages have been in the 1.5-2.5% range," he told King.

"The expectations the market have is that interest rates probably won't get below 3.5%. And that means mortgages, or the new normal for mortgages, will be in that 3.5-4.5% range, not 1.5-2.5%."

Mr Nunn's comments earned applause from brokers and mortgage experts, with the industry news service Newspage speaking to a range of voices...

"I agree with Charlie Nunn: ultra-low interest rates are history. The public is adjusting to the new normal of 3.5% to 4.5% mortgage rates. Nunn's comments highlight market reality and urge borrowers to adapt now." Ranald Mitchell, from Charwin Private Clients
"If you're a first-time buyer, you may not see ultra-low interest rates in your mortgage lifetime. But that doesn't mean a return to good interest rates isn't possible. We should see rates beginning with a 3 or even a 2 in the not-too-distant future, especially for those with good deposits or equity." Ben Perks, from Orchard Financial Advisers

For now, the focus of many mortgage holders has been on when the Bank of England will start easing rates from the current 16-year high of 5.25%.

June had been touted but this month's meeting came and went without a change - and the delay means more people coming off mortgages secured in the ultra-low era are facing significant hikes.

About three million UK households are still set to witness hikes in their mortgage repayments over the next two years, the Bank has said this week.

Its Financial Policy Committee (FPC) added there were likely to be "very large increases" of more than 50% for the mortgages of around 400,000 households.

At the moment, around 35% of households with mortgages, or more than three million, are paying below 3% for a range of reasons - like existing deals which pre-dated the recent crisis - and are expected to see an increase between now and the end of 2026.

A typical household rolling off a fixed-rate mortgage before the end of 2026 is due to face a jump of around £180 a month, the committee said.

There has been some good news for borrowers this week though, with a handful of major lenders cutting rates in response to falling swap rates (these dictate how much it costs lenders to lend).

"Fixed rate mortgage reductions from prominent lenders such as Barclays and HSBC dominated coverage this week, as last week’s inflation announcement continued to prompt speculation of an imminent cut to base rate," says Caitlyn Eastell from Moneyfacts.

Turning to the best deals currently on the market, Ms Eastell says the lowest two-year fix for first time buyers with a 5% deposit comes from Halifax.

Priced at 5.63%, this deal has a £999 arrangement fee and offers a £250 Green Home cashback incentive to those purchasing eligible properties.

Moneyfacts also rounds up the best overall deals - looking beyond just the headline rate.

Ms Eastell adds: "As a first time buyer, every penny counts and you may have already exhausted your savings building up a 5% deposit, as well as covering legal fees and removal costs.

"It's important to consider the true cost of any deal you commit to, so if you are looking to save on the upfront cost of your mortgage, then a Best Buy mortgage may be a more cost-effective choice.

"This week, Hanley Economic BS takes one of the top spots of our Best Buy tables for a two-year mortgage. Priced at 5.69%, it offers a free valuation and £250 cashback incentive."

There could be good news on the horizon for borrowers, as an economist says the Bank of England is likely to cut interest rates in August.

Michael Saunders, a former member of the Monetary Police Committee (MPC), said the Bank has "clearly signalled" it wants to cut rates soon "if data are okay".

He told the Reuters Global Markets Forum that inflation and wage figures would need to align with the MPC's forecasts back in May.

"If so, I would expect the rest of the internal [members of the MPC] to move as a bloc to vote for a cut," he said, saying that markets had been given enough warning.

The BoE  held interest rates  at 5.25% for the seventh time in a row last week despite inflation falling to its target of 2%.

Mr Saunders predicted that the Bank would slash rates seven times in increments of 25 points by the end of next year, bringing the headline rate "close" to what he calls a neutral rate of 3.5%.

"I expect two to three cuts this year, the rest next year - again, depends a bit on the monthly data," he said.

The government has accredited three new forms of ID for purchasing restricted goods and services.

Lloyds Bank Smart ID, Post Office EasyID and Yoti ID can now be used to watch age-restricted films in cinemas, enter gambling premises, or pay for tattoos and tanning salons.

They cannot be used to buy alcoholic drinks in pubs and shops, but are recognised when buying alcohol online, along with tobacco, vapes, lottery tickets and fireworks.

"More UK businesses can now accept our Digital IDs to reduce the risk of fake IDs, increase compliance and improve the customer experience," said Robin Tombs, CEO of Yoti.

He said more than four million people have already downloaded a Digital ID app.

"This is a strong sign that people are ready to embrace reusable Digital IDs and want a more secure, private and convenient way to prove who they are."

Each of the Digital ID apps includes the approved PASS hologram.

Most of us know the feeling of rushing back to your car when you realise your ticket is about to run out.

The good news is, new rules mean you won't have to race back quite as breathlessly in future.

Drivers are to get a 10-minute grace period when their time runs out at private car parks.

The changes are coming in after industry bodies the British Parking Association (BPA) and the International Parking Community (IPC) published a new code of conduct.

However, the AA said it still leaves room for drivers to be ripped off because it misses out "desperately needed" measures such as a cap on charges.

The electric carmaker Tesla is recalling more than 11,000 of its new Cybertruck vehicles after safety regulators found a potentially dangerous fault with its giant windscreen wiper.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also said a trim in the boot may be improperly attached.

"Excessive electrical current can cause the front windshield wiper motor controller to fail," the safety administration said in a recall acknowledgement letter.

Tesla said it would replace the wiper motor at no cost to owners.

It comes after nearly 4,000 Cybertrucks were recalled in April to fix an accelerator pedal pad that could come loose.

Mass production of the vehicle, which starts at a price of $79,990 (£63,130), is expected to start next year.

It's not yet known how many trucks have gone to consumers, but the Blade Runner-inspired car has been plagued by problems.

Is your area crying out for a new supermarket to broaden your options and push prices down with a bit of competition?

Last month, the UK’s fourth largest supermarket - Aldi - asked shoppers to get in touch with their views on where it should open new stores.

The discount chain says it received thousands of replies, which it has used to hone its search for new store sites.

At the moment, Aldi has more than 1,020 stores. It says it wants more than 1,500 stores across the UK in the long run.

The 27 areas of priority to Aldi are:

  • Woodford, London
  • Surbiton, London
  • South Croydon, London
  • Notting Hill, London
  • Walthamstow, London
  • Beckenham, London
  • Bromley, London
  • Barnet, London
  • Redhill, Surrey
  • Aldershot, Hampshire
  • Haywards Heath, West Sussex
  • Burgess Hill, West Sussex
  • Chatham, Kent
  • Cheadle, Greater Manchester
  • Chorlton, Manchester
  • Formby, Liverpool
  • Newark, Nottinghamshire
  • Chesterfield, Derbyshire
  • Wellingborough, Northamptonshire
  • Rayleigh, Essex
  • Brentwood, Essex
  • Dorchester, Dorset
  • Clarkston, Scotland
  • Cathcart, Scotland
  • Penzance, Cornwall
  • Warwick, Warwickshire
  • Bath, Somerset

Jonathan Neale, managing director of national real estate at Aldi UK, said: "We want to make high quality food accessible to all, but we can’t do that while there are still some towns and areas that either don’t have an Aldi or have capacity for additional stores.

"We recognise there is huge demand in certain regions for more stores, which is why we decided to get the public’s input on our latest list of priority locations."

Which?, the consumer website and magazine, has ranked Aldi as the cheapest supermarket in the UK consistently this year.

Using a typical list of popular items, Which? ranked Aldi as the cheapest place to shop from January to May - with rivals Lidl coming in second.

However, for a longer list of items and a bigger shop, Asda and Morrisons have typically been the top two for Which? this year.

Customers of both Tesco and OVO Energy are entitled to 2,500 free Clubcard points, the supermarket has announced.

The points can be redeemed as a £25 voucher or at double their value with Clubcard reward partners.

Customers can unlock the points by linking their accounts with both companies.

"The cost of living remains a key challenge for households and our partnership with Tesco is one of the many ways in which we are giving back to our customers with rewards that they can spend how they choose," said Mat Moakes, chief commercial officer at OVO.

New customers can link their Tesco Clubcard account when they sign up as an OVO customer, while existing OVO customers can log into their account, go to their profile, click "our partners", and select the Tesco Clubcard logo.

Want to see a show in London this summer without breaking the bank?

You're in luck - as new data has revealed the most affordable musicals to see in the capital right now.

The data, collated by theatre ticket site SeatPlan , shows the most affordable musical to see in London right now is Two Strangers (Carry A Cake Across New York), with the average cheapest ticket price at £17.90.

The rom-com musical follows a British boy (Dougal), who lands in New York for his dad's second wedding.

At the airport, he meets the bride's sister, and a quirky, offbeat love story ensues.

Also in the top 10 are Marie Curie The Musical (£20), Guys And Dolls (£23.90) and Sister Act (£26.40).

Shows are ranked by the average price of the cheapest ticket, with the top ranked show having the lowest price.

On the flip side, the data also revealed the most expensive tickets, by analysing internal pricing data for musicals from SeatPlan.com.

Musicals including Cabaret (£85.10), Mean Girls (£64.60) and Starlight Express (£43.70) make up this list...

If you've been reassured by positive recent news on inflation and a widely anticipated cut in interest rates later this year, unfortunately the Bank of England has a worrying update for mortgage payers.

About three million UK households are still set to witness hikes in their mortgage repayments over the next two years, the Bank has said.

Its Financial Policy Committee (FPC) added there are likely to be "very large increases" of more than 50% for the mortgages of around 400,000 households.

But the central bank stressed that UK lenders are still in a strong position to support households and businesses, even if the economic backdrop worsens.

The concerning update is in the Bank's latest Financial Stability Report.

It also showed that most households have already had an increase in their mortgage rates since borrowing costs began rising substantially in 2022.

Why is the outlook so bad if interest rates are expected to fall?

Interest rates are at a 16-year-high of 5.25%, with the central bank voting to maintain the figure for a seventh consecutive meeting earlier this month.

But many economists have predicted the base rate could be reduced at the Bank's next vote in August.

However, at the moment, around 35% of households with mortgages, or more than three million, are paying below 3% for a range of reasons - like existing deals which pre-dated the recent crisis - and are expected to see an increase between now and the end of 2026.

A typical household rolling off a fixed-rate mortgage before the end of 2026 is due to face a jump of around £180 a month, the report said.

It highlighted that an "increasing proportion" of households have been choosing to borrow over a longer period of time, reducing monthly repayments but leaving them with more debt to service over time.

Higher mortgage rates have resulted in many households and renters reducing their savings, the Bank also found.
