The Cozumel cruise port is Mexico's busiest and one of the most popular cruise ports in the Caribbean, welcoming more than 3 million cruise passengers every year. The cruise port on Cozumel can be a little confusing, as it has three terminals on the island: Punta Langosta, Puerta Maya and the International Cruise Terminal. Punta Langosta is in downtown San Miguel, and Puerta Maya and the International Cruise Terminal are on the southwestern part of the island, about 5 miles south of San Miguel. It's about an 11-minute walk from Punta Langosta to San Miguel and about a 10-minute taxi ride from the other two terminals.

Language : Spanish is the official language, but most tourist services use English.

Currency : Mexico uses the Mexican peso; 17 pesos are roughly equal to $1. However, many restaurants, shops and bars will accept dollars, likely at a more expensive exchange rate. Most facilities will accept credit cards. It is best to travel with pesos, though, to get the best deal.

Paradise Beach

Playa El Cielo

The best way to visit Playa El Cielo on a cruise is to book a snorkeling shore excursion. Trust us, it will be worth it. At the southern tip of Cozumel, this dreamy swath of sugary sand is known for its crystal-clear water and the thousands of starfish that rest on the bleached white sand beneath the waves. You can't access El Cielo by car, so excursions shuttle travelers over by boat.

Passion Island

If it's possible to elevate a Cozumel beach experience, Passion Island does just that. This small, pristine wedge of paradise is just off the north coast. Thick with palm trees and nothing but turquoise water as far as the eye can see, the protected island is just a five-minute crossing over from Cozumel. The best way to reach it is from the Punta Langosta cruise terminal, where guides can arrange transportation, lunch and activities.

How to get around Cozumel on your own

• On foot : San Miguel is an extremely walkable town, with a grid of crisscrossing streets that are flanked by restaurants, bars and souvenir shops.
• Taxi : Taxis are abundant on Cozumel, particularly at the cruise terminals. It's about a four-minute taxi ride from Punta Langosta into San Miguel and about a 10-minute taxi ride from both Puerta Maya and the International Cruise Terminal. Always confirm the price before getting into a taxi. Prices are fixed, but it isn't uncommon for some taxi drivers to overcharge tourists.
• Bike or scooter : Getting around Cozumel on two wheels is popular transportation for tourists, and there are many bike and scooter rental shops in San Miguel. Keep in mind that scooters are still motorized vehicles, so you should not drive one if you don't have experience. It's also extremely important to wear a helmet.
• Car : All three cruise terminals have rental cars available near their taxi departure areas.

Cozumel restaurants near the cruise port

Mexican fare reigns supreme in Cozumel. However, as an international tourist destination, it also provides a broad selection of cuisines for visitors to sample.

Plenty of restaurants are steps from the cruise port, but keep in mind that you will be paying a pretty peso at many of the more popular tourist restaurants. San Miguel is where you will find the majority of the restaurants on the island. Most places here are walkable, and you'll find the widest variety of restaurants to choose from.

Restaurants are also scattered along the coastline — mainly in the form of beach clubs, which is a big thing in Cozumel. A few specialty restaurants can be found on the beaches, too. For example, Buccanos has a reputation for the best seafood in town. ​​It's pricey, but higher prices are something to expect in Cozumel in general. This is one of the most popular restaurants for catching the sunset, so be sure to make those dinner reservations far in advance.

Another coastal must is The Money Bar Beach Club, beloved by both locals and longtime visitors. A two-for-one happy hour makes this a popular spot at sunset. Plus, live music sets the scene for a lovely sundowner moment.

On the east side of the island, things go a little off-grid, in a good way. Cozumel's wild and windswept eastern side means only a handful of beach bars and restaurants are available. Mezcalito's Restaurant & Beach Bar is a must. It's one of the island's oldest bars, and this Cozumel institution serves up signature laid-back beach vibes and views out to sea.

Cozumel dishes to try

Mexican food may be an overarching term, but you'll find that its definition changes everywhere in Mexico that you visit. Cozumel is no exception. Cozumelian cuisine combines Mayan recipes, Spanish flavors and Caribbean twists. When visiting Cozumel, a few dishes must be on your foodie bucket list.

Cochinita pibil is a Yucatan essential. This slow-roasted pork dish is prevalent throughout the Yucatan peninsula; the pork is heaped into tacos or stuffed between bread for plump tortas, all topped with pickled onions. Taqueria Maya is the best spot in town for this must-try dish.

Another Yucatecan specialty, panuchos are made from fried tortillas stuffed with refried black beans and topped with cabbage, pulled chicken, red onions and avocado. You can find these at the stalls within Cozumel's Mercado Municipal, which opens at 7 a.m.

Don't miss the simple, rustic, delicious pescado frito (fried fish). Most people are frying up grouper or red snapper on the island. It's quick, easy, delicious and cheap.

As with most coastal destinations in Mexico, ceviche is a staple in Cozumel. The fresh fish salad has lime juice, pico de gallo, cilantro and sometimes tropical fruits. The best part? You can find it practically everywhere on Cozumel.

Cozumel cruise port shopping

Puerta Maya and the International Cruise Terminal both have tons of shopping right in the terminal area. Puerta Maya even has a two-story shopping mall with more than 50 different outlets. Also, several local merchants sell handmade crafts and souvenirs from carts.

Across the road from the International Cruise Terminal is the Royal Village Shopping Center, which has lots of options for shopping and dining. You'll also find the Mayan Plaza with even more shops.

Punta Langosta is within walking distance of San Miguel, where an overwhelming number of boutiques and souvenir shops await. Los Cinco Soles, known for its wide selection of handicrafts and silver, is one of the best in town.

Speaking of silver, Mexican silver is always a nice treat to take home with you. Sergio's Silver from Taxco has arguably the best selection of jewelry in town and is within walking distance of the Punta Maya terminal.

Free things to do in Cozumel cruise port

The best part about Mexico's beaches is that they are all usually free to access. If you want to just hang out at the beach without going to a beach club, most of the beaches in Cozumel are free to use. Playa Palancar, Playa Chen Rio and Playa Mezcalitos are just a few favorites.

Also, it's always free to wander around the main plaza in San Miguel to people-watch and window-shop.

There are so many things to do that it’s tough to decide the best things to do in Cozumel, especially when you only have one day in port.

Almost all short cruises from South Florida or the Gulf states plus Western Caribbean itineraries include a visit to Cozumel. This year, Cozumel expects nearly 4 million cruise passengers. I t’s no wonder why.

It’s hard to believe that this diverse, laid-back island in the Yucatan Peninsula is just 12 miles off the east coast of mainland Mexico. It’s also a jumping off point for a ferry to Playa del Carmen on the mainland and excursions to the Mayan Ruins.

I love a day in Cozumel.  From gorgeous uncrowded secluded beaches or famous beach clubs to world-class snorkeling or discovering authentic Mexican cuisine, there’s so much to do in Cozumel on a cruise day. I’ve narrowed down the list to places I’ve seen, dined, shopped, and shore tours I’ve taken.

Since your cruise ship is stopping in Cozumel for only one day, you better make the most your time! So let’s get started. Here are my picks for some of the  best things to do in Cozumel and what makes this tiny island so unique. 

A Little History of Cozumel May Help You Decide

Though nearly a 3,000 year-old civilization, Cozumel was a commercial and ceremonial center during the classic Mayan period about 250 to 900 A.D. During this time the Mayans created many of its sacred archeological sites dotted across the island. 

Mayans would travel to and from the mainland by canoe and considered this land to have religious significance.

Cozumel was also once a refuge for pirates and trading ships, giving them a place to replenish and feel protected by the dangerous coral reef. Eventually, in 1518, with the first Spanish expedition, the Spaniards occupy the land, finally making it the most prominent island inhabited by Mexico. 

Now, Cozumel is a  thriving tourist location for its beautiful sandy beaches, excellent snorkeling and diving, cuisine and much more. 

Where Your Ship Might Dock in Cozumel

Your cruise ship will dock at one of three Cozumel cruise ports, all located on the island’s western side. These include Punta Langosta, International pier, and Puerta Maya. Where you dock could depend on what cruise line you are sailing. 

Think of Punta Langosta as the downtown pier. The International Pier is three miles south, and then Puerta Maya is the furthest outside of town, nearly five miles away. From Puerta Maya, it’s too far to walk into town, but you’re closer to the beach clubs.

Punta Langosta

Punta Langosta is Cozumel’s local downtown pier. If your ship docks at this port, you will be in the center of it all and only a few minutes walk to downtown San Miguel, the largest city on the island. 

Leaving the ship, kiosks and vendors will filter you through the Punta Langosta Mall full of shops and restaurants. And souvenir stands. Almost all Norwegian Cruise Line ships will dock here, assuming there’s space. Plus, Disney and MSC also use this port. 

Punta Langosta Mall has all the usual Caribbean shops; Cariloha, Del Sol, Diamonds International, Colombian Emeralds. Take time to venture into the smaller shops. Be prepared to haggle for the price; it’s what they do. But don’t try to bargain too low – everyone has to earn a living. 

If you need any drugstore items, there is at least one pharmacy in the mall. There’s no haggling over prices at any of the pharmacies. 

International Pier

The International Pier is the middle-island cruise ship port. You’ll probably dock here if you’re cruising with Royal Caribbean or Celebrity.

You can still walk to Punta Langosta and San Miguel from this port, but it’s usually too hot to walk into town and back to your ship. For a few dollars, it’s easier to hop into a taxi for the ride downtown or back to your ship.

The shopping mall across the street, Royal Village Shopping Mall, gets mixed reviews from customers. All the usual Caribbean shops are here, too.

If you decide to walk into town, the pedestrian sidewalk is reasonably wide on the sea side. Along the way, you’ll see waterfront restaurants and bars on the other side of the street but be extra careful when you cross the busy road.

The International Pier is also home to colorful architectural sites and a giant shopping center and places to eat and drink. This is the only drawback to cruising with Royal Caribbean and brands.

Punta Langosta and Puerta Maya have a nicer infrastructure complex. Maybe that will change.

Puerta Maya

The farthest port from downtown San Miguel is Puerta Maya , about five miles south. This is where Carnival ships dock and most of their brands dock here, too.

After you leave your ship, you’ll find a lush garden full of flowers and plants and the most extensive shopping mall out of all three ports. There are at least 50 shops plus pop-up kiosk-type vendor stands. And of course, a pharmacy. 

Puerta Maya is home to popular restaurants like The Three Amigos bar and a newer Pancho’s Backyard plus lots of colorful photo ops. 

If you want to head out on your own, there’s a car rental agency located near the taxi stand.

Best Places for Lunch in San Miguel, Cozumel

If you love food, you’ll be happy to learn that Cozumel has some fabulous places to eat. If you’re like me, when I travel, I want to make sure to sample the best authentic food I can find. Cozumel has several restaurants that won’t disappoint. 

When you only have one day to spare, it’s helpful to know exactly where to eat in Cozumel. Here are some fantastic suggestions! And yes, I’ve been to all of them. 

Pancho’s Backyard

Pancho’s Backyard, in the heart of downtown San Miguel, is adjacent to Los Cinco Solas shopping arcade. The decor is traditional Mexican style with woven leather seats and bright colors. Just keeping walking north along the waterfront and you’ll find Pancho’s Backyard.

Local musicians play the sounds of Mexico for a fantastic ambiance. Not to worry, it’s not a noisy mariachi band. Instead, there are usually three people quietly playing guitar and accompanying instruments.

There’s also the newer Pancho’s Backyard down by Carnival’s pier, Puerto Maya. But I prefer the Pancho’s to the north at Los Cinco Solas small shopping mall. 

If you’re looking for dessert, it’s a short taxi ride to the nearby Kakao Chocolate Factory.

Pescaderia is considered a hidden gem a bit outside of Centro San Miguel. This restaurant features fresh seafood dishes, including their famous ceviche, which is a must-try! Or try the local catch, prepared whole and served family-style.

Pescaderia also plays live music and is known for its accommodating and amiable owners and staff. This family-run restaurant has gluten-free options and reasonable prices for its high-quality food.

Panaderia la Cozumelena

Since 1962, Panaderia la Cozumelena has been serving delicious coffee and breakfast to its patrons. The menu has something for everyone, including light fruit and smoothies to substantial breakfasts.

Order a cafe de olla, coffee with cinnamon, and you’ll also receive pan dulce, a sweet and traditional Mexican bread. This place is the perfect place to break your fast when docking early for a day in Cozumel.

Cozumel Beach Clubs 

What’s the number one thing you should do when visiting Cozumel? Go to the beach! If you’re looking to enjoy a full beach/pool day, there are many Cozumel beach clubs to choose from.

Here are a few suggestions! Keep in mind that the most popular and sandy beaches are all on the island’s west side. 

That’s where you’ll find the lively beach clubs, major hotels, and some of the best dive and snorkeling sites in the world. 

Mr. Sanchos Beach Club

Mr. Sanchos  Beach Club, located about 20 minutes from downtown San Miguel, offers an all-inclusive day pass to travelers looking to get the most out of the relaxing beach life in Cozumel.

All the cruise ships sell Mr. Sanchos beach shore excursions, so don’t be surprised at the number of cruise passengers homesteading their beach chairs.

A day pass includes all of your food and drink as well as access to their two pools, beach palapas, and activities such as kayaking, water sports, and more. You can even add on horseback riding, parasailing, and the use of a wave runner.

Paradise Beach Club

Paradise Beach Club is another option when looking for an all-inclusive excursion with unlimited drinks and food. Enjoy their enormous heated pool and cute boutique shopping stores to pick up your souvenirs. 

This particular club also features a Fun Day pass which includes access to their ocean water park with inflatable trampolines, slides, and more.

This pass also gives you access to kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and snorkeling gear. 

Cabana Beach Club

If you’re looking for a more private experience, Cabana Beach might be the best place for you. At this beach club, you’ll enjoy your private VIP cabana that can hold up to six guests.

You’ll also have access to concierge service for food, drinks, and activities. There are also many events held at this particular club, including live music and dance parties. If you’re looking for a private and premiere experience, the Cabana Beach Club is it!

Also included with your entrance fee is access for snorkeling in the nearby Chankanaab Eco Park. 

Isla Pasión (Passion Island)

The private island of Isla Pasión is located at the north end of Cozumel, reachable by boat. Tours to this secluded beach are offered by all the cruise lines.

Included with the tour package are lounge chairs, hammocks, a water park, plus lunch and beverages. If you really want to get away from the crowds and stay on the west (calmer seas) side of Cozumel, this is a great choice.

Best Snorkeling Locations

While snorkeling isn’t my go-to sport, snorkeling is one of the best activities you can do in these warm Caribbean waters. Cozumel is known for its incredible and plentiful coral reefs, and following are a few of the best snorkeling locations in Cozumel and possibly the world.

Dzul Ha at The Money Bar

This location, near the Puerta Maya and International piers, could be the best location for snorkeling in all of Cozumel.

There’s plenty of sea life with large schools of tropical fish and an excellent chance to view turtles and manta rays! It’s also a very uncrowded beach club with great food and lounge chairs. 

Playa Corona

Playa Corona is an excellent spot for snorkeling in shallow waters. Without the need for a boat ride to get to some great snorkeling, it’s a fan favorite!

Spot schools of fish and enjoy the local restaurant when you’ve become waterlogged and need a break!

Chankanaab Eco Park

At this popular spot, you’ll be sure to see lobster, colorful coral, manta rays, and much more. The mild currents in this area make for an abundance of tropical fish.

You won’t have to dive too deep to see all that you’d want to see on a snorkeling excursion. 

Best Uncrowded Beaches on the “Other” Side

Most people gravitate towards the west side of Cozumel because of San Miguel, the many beach clubs, and all the three cruise ports along the coast.

However, the  other side of Cozumel  is beautiful, more rugged looking, and much more private if you’re looking to get away from the crowds.

On the east side of the island, tourists come for the bars and restaurants, narrow beaches, and gorgeous views of the rugged eastern coastline. 

If you’re looking for a quieter place to relax and enjoy a good book without interruption, try visiting one of these options on the “other” side of the island. 

Punta Sur Ecological Beach Park

At the southern tip of Cozumel Island, this eco-reserve is a protected lagoon teeming with wild birds and crocodiles. Climb to the top of the lighthouse for beautiful views of the island.

Here on the east side of Cozumel and the Caribbean Sea, you’ll feel like you’re on your private beach. You can rent 4x4s and head out on your own.

Some rentals also include a stop for lunch and a beverage and time to relax on the beach. 

This could be one of the best things to do in Cozumel on a cruise. Especially if you want to get away from the hub-bub of downtown and usually thousands of cruise passengers. 

Playa Punta Morena

Talk about private! This beach is tucked away on the less popular east side of the island. Here, you can rent a hammock or lounger or use your belongings for sitting privately and spending time alone in paradise.

Playa Chen Rio and Chen Rio Restaurant

Playa Chen Rio beach is a great escape and one of the only really nice soft, sandy beaches on this side of the island.

Have lunch at Chen Rio’s as you overlook the waves crashing against the magnificent rocks along the shore. The palapa-inspired decor gives you an authentic tropical island experience. There’s an extensive menu to peruse and a sandy path down to the sea for exploring after lunch. 

For a break from the action, located between Chen Rio and Punta Morena, ascend the stone stairs up to one of my favorite bars in Cozumel.

With stunning views of the Caribbean Sea and excellent drinks and snacks, this is a great way to end your day in Cozumel.

There’s also a sandy walking path down to the rocky, limestone beach. Not for swimming. 

Best Shopping in Cozumel

Something about traveling makes you want to shop! Of course, you’ll want to pick up some great souvenirs for your loved ones at home and also something for yourself to remember the trip.

Head to one of these shopping locations to find your favorite souvenirs.

Los Cinco Solas

Known in English as the Five Sons, this shopping center is a souvenir hunter’s dream.

Considered one of the best shopping destinations in all of Cozumel, this area is where you’ll find the best selection of beautifully hand-crafted gifts and pottery on the entire island.

While some of the items may be a bit expensive, it’s worth it for the quality and uniqueness.

Remember, if you have lunch at Pancho’s Backyard at the north end of town, you’ll be right there at Los Cinco Solas.

In need of sunscreen or other last-minute items that you forgot to pack? Are you looking for some unique spices? Look no further than MegaMart.

With tons of fresh fruit, vegetables, and to-go snacks, you’ll find it hard not to walk away with something delicious. It’s like a Walmart but more fun!

But remember, only unopened packs of food, coffee, spices, etc., are allowed back on the ship.

El Mercado is a colorful, open-air area full of little eateries and small shops. This local market is the perfect place to try all different types of local flavors, especially on a budget.

Spend a couple of hours walking around for some fresh ready-to-eat meals! But you can’t bring the fruit back to your ship.

Punta Langosta Mall 

Located right next to the Punta Langosta cruise port, you’ll find all of the souvenirs you need.

Visit as soon as you dock or while you’re waiting to board after your day ashore. This area is full of big-name shops but also local Mexican vendors as well as a pharmacy.

Similar to Puerto Maya, it’s a tourist’s shopping haven. 

Getting Around Cozumel Island

If you want to enjoy the most of Cozumel on your cruise, you’ll need a proper way to get around. Consider renting a taxi when you get off your cruise ship to take you downtown for a fair price.

If you want to go to the east side of the island, it might be better to rent a car instead of paying for the higher cab fare.

Or, walk up to a cab driver and ask how much he’d charge for a 1/2 day of touring. 

A couple of years ago, for $50 USD, our driver took three of us all around the island, with stops at Chen Rio, Coconuts, and a couple of other places. 

If you’re feeling more adventurous, consider renting an ATV to explore the island!

Cozumel Conclusion 

To try and do many of the best things to do in Cozumel on a cruise, you really need to maximize your time. Cozumel is an incredible island with tons of unique and interesting activities and places to explore.

Be sure to leave some time to taste the local flavors from some of the best restaurants in the area, sip a cold margarita while you relax on some of the Caribbean’s best beaches.

Hi Liz, Thank you so much for your kind words! Happy to share my info. Yes, I’ve spent a day at Nachi Cocum more than once. In fact, I think it was the first beach club I ever went to in Cozumel years ago and returned to several times. The pool is very nice, the food is plentiful and more typically touristic than a restaurant in town but still good. It always seems to get good reviews too and limiting the amount of guests is a great idea. Mr. Sanchos, on the other hand, is (in my opinion) somewhat chaotic. Nice but very crowded. I think you will enjoy your day at Nachi Cocum. I would suggest eating lunch earlier rather than later, when everything is fresh from the kitchen. Just my suggestion based on experience. Basically, get there earlier in the day, relax, eat and do your shopping later.

If you’re going a Caribbean cruise and visiting Cozumel, you’re in luck! Cozumel is a popular cruise port in the Caribbean, known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and rich cultural experiences.

There are so many fun and interesting things to do in Cozumel, much of it in near the cruise port. From snorkeling along the famous Palancar Reef, visiting ancient Mayan ruins, or relaxing at one of the island’s popular beach resorts, there is something for everyone.

Cruise ships dock at one of Cozumel’s 3 large piers and it’s not uncommon to have 6 or more ships in port for the day. It’s a good idea to plan activities in advance, either through the cruise line or local tour operators, to ensure availability.

About Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel is located in the Yucatan Peninsula, about 45 miles north of Cancun. Contrary to bustling Cancun, Cozumel is a quieter area to visit. It’s also a ferry trip away from popular Playa Del Carmen.

Cozumel has some of the most beautiful coral reefs, clear water, tropical fish and marine life that rivals many Caribbean islands. Cozumel also has several natural parks that offer a range of outdoor activities and experiences.

When it comes to shopping and dining, prices are reasonable at local restaurants, bars, and souvenir shops. Bargaining is common in local markets, so don’t hesitate to negotiate prices on jewelry and handicrafts.

Where Do Cruise Ships Dock in Cozumel?

Cruise ships dock at one of 3 Cozumel piers. It’s a good idea to take note of your cruise terminal when you depart from your cruise ship so that when you return at the end of the day, there is no confusion.

Punta Langosta (downtown)

Punta Langosta is the cruise terminal closest to Downtown Cozumel, within a short walking distance. This is a great place if you simply want to walk around Cozumel, shop, eat in a local restaurant or do a bit of shopping. There are some free museums that you can visit nearby the cruise ship.

International Pier

International Pier is in the middle between Punta Langosta and Puerto Maya. You can certainly walk from this pier to the downtown area, however our experience has often been that it’s really hot, and taxis are plentiful and cheap.

Royal Caribbean Celebrity and Norwegian Cruise Line often dock at this cruise terminal.

Pro tip: After an excursion, consider heading into the Royal Village Shopping Mall, right across the street from the pier. It’s a good place for souvenirs, handicrafts and t-shirts. However the best part is that it is air conditioned!

Puerto Maya

Puerto Maya is the cruise terminal farthest from Downtown, but closest some of Cozumel’s most popular beaches. This cruise terminal has several restaurants and popular bars, and opportunities to shop for silver jewelry, pottery, t-shirts and vanilla to take back home.

Cozumel – What Cruise Passengers Need to Know

The currency used in Cozumel is the Mexican Peso (MXN), however US dollars are readily and happily accepted.

Major credit cards are also accepted, however you’ll want to keep some smaller bills 1$, 5$, 10$ handy for cab rides and for shopping at the local shops and markets.

Spanish is the official language in Cozumel, but many locals working in tourist areas speak English. Learning a few basic Spanish phrases can enhance your experience.

Cozumel, a tropical island in the Caribbean, experiences warm temperatures ranging from 75°F to 88°F throughout the year. The hottest months are typically June through September, with higher humidity levels.

The dry season spans from November to April, with lower chances of rain. The rainy season typically occurs from June to October, with a higher chance of tropical showers or storms.

Cozumel is in the Eastern Standard Time (EST) zone.

Getting Around Cozumel

Cozumel is an easy great cruise port to visit with a shore excursion, or on your own. Taxis are readily available at the cruise port and if you are docked closest to the Downtown, you can explore on foot.

Scooter or Car Rental

Renting a scooter or car is also an option if you want to explore the island independently. However, it’s best to exercise caution and this is generally not recommended by the cruise line.

A ferry is available as well. Be careful if taking a ferry on your own, and make sure to check the schedule carefully so that you don’t risk not making it back to the ship before boarding time.

The easiest and safest way to visit the attractions in Cozumel is to take a taxi. In fact, many of the best beaches in Cozumel are only about 15 minute cab ride away. 

When you exit the cruise port terminal building, you’ll find the taxi area with the taxi fares displayed. Fares to most beaches on the west side are about 6$ a person/per way. If you have more people in your party, the cost may be lower.

Free Things to Do in Cozumel

Overall, Cozumel is not an expensive island to visit. In fact, there are many inexpensive and even, free things to do In Cozumel for the day in port.

1. San Miguel

San Miguel is in the downtown area of Cozumel. It’s closest to the Punta Langosta pier, so its actually an easy walk. If you’re at one of the piers further west, you can either take a longer walk, or take a 10 minute cab ride. Since Cozumel tends to be very hot, a cab ride may be your best bet!

In San Miguel, you’ll find many local shops selling souvenirs, local crafts, silver jewelry, beautiful white cotton casual and beach wear. You can also stop in at a local restaurant where you can find authentic Mexican cuisine.

If you enjoy just getting out and walking, the waterfront view is gorgeous, and of course, window shopping is free. You can also walk and stop in at Benito Juarez Park and visit the charming (and old) San Miguel Church.

 2. Playa Corona Beach

While you won’t get all the bells and whistles that comes with some of the all-inclusive resort style beach resorts, this free beach has amazing snorkeling! Plus, its only a 15 minute cab ride away from the pier.

You can enter this beach for free and bring your own snorkel gear. They do also rent equipment if you need it.

There is also a family owned bar and restaurant on site if you decide to sit and grab a bite.

Pro tip: While other activities mentioned below are not free things to do in Cozumel, there are a few that are inexpensive. Cozumel is a port where you can enjoy and keep to a budget.

Family Friendly Activities in Cozumel

Cozumel has some of the best activities for families. Whether you’re looking for a beach day or a family adventure, you’ll find it here. The beach clubs in Cozumel are a popular day trip option for both adults and kids.

3. Paradise Beach Club

Located about 5 miles from International Pier, Paradise beach is a 10 to 15 minute cab away. Paradise Beach in Cozumel has been a fan favorite for years, and it just keeps getting better!

You’ll find a beautiful heated resort style pool, a stunning beach front, and clean facilities at this resort beach club. You can reserve an all inclusive option in advance on their website, great for a worry free day in Cozumel cruise port.

Additionally, you can purchase a fun pass for a large inflatable water park which is quite popular! Something fun to know is that if you do use the water park, you also get access to the kayaks, which is a nice additional activity.

My family has been coming here for years, and we genuinely love it!

4. Playa Mia Grand Beach Park

If you’re on a cruise, you’ve likely heard of Playa Mia. This is an excursion often offered by the cruise ship, however you can also book this on your own and even get transportation included.

This family friendly resort truly has a lot to offer.

Some of the main attractions with are included with your Beach Access Pass include a large pool, water-slides, young children’s splash park, floating water park, paddle boats, underwater Mayan village for snorkeling and more!

The “included” attractions are some of the best available at any beach resort day pass, however there are other experiences available at an additional cost.

If you would like food and drinks included, you can opt for a package which includes this.

5. Mr. Sanchos Beach Club

Mr. Sanchos is a very popular beach club for both families and couples alike. If you like to pay one price for all the food you can eat and frozen margaritas you can drink, checl out Mr. Sanchos for the day in Cozumel.

The beach is gorgeous, the food and drinks are good, and it is a 15 minute cab ride from the cruise port. Along with this, you can also kayak and enjoy a pool with a swim up bar.

Please note that although a lot is included, there is an additional charge for wave runners, para-sailing and the use of an inflatable water park.

6. Chakanaab Beach and Snorkel Park – Dolphin Discovery

Chakanaab Beach and Snorkel Park is unique in a world of beach resorts with pools and water-slides.

It’s actually a natural park located in the Marine National Park of Cozumel. If you are looking for a more authentic beauty in the marine life and botanicals, Chakanaab is a must!

At Chakanaab you can snorkel as well as swim and interact with dolphins and manatees.

This marine park is located about 15 minutes by cab from the cruise port.

Pro tip: Make sure to pack reef friendly sunscreen as Chakanaab Beach Adventure Park only permits reef safe sunscreen (all other sunscreens are banned)

7. Xcaret Park

While not located directly in Cozumel, Xcaret Park is a popular cruise excursion for both adults and kids. accessible via a ferry ride from the island. The park offers a mix of fun activities, natural wonders, cultural exhibits, and activities such as snorkeling in underground rivers and swimming with dolphins.

Something to note is that although this is a full day shore excursion, the park is approximately 1 and a half hours away from the cruise terminal.

8. Amazing Cozumel Race

Could this be any more fun for a family? Pretty close to the actual TV show, this is an off the beaten path family friendly scavenger hunt that cruise passengers rave about!

This is an active excursion which involves a lot of walking and even a boat ride, so just make sure the whole family is up for an enjoyable, but active day.

9. Cozumel Butterfly & Botanical Gardens

Located closeby to the cruise ship terminals, the Cozumel Butterfly & Botanical Gardens is a great activity for the whole family. The butterfly sanctuary has a netted tropical garden area with butterflies as well as beautiful botanical gardens and trees. In addition to seeing the colorful butterflies, there’s a pool, beach and snorkel area that you can enjoy. 

10. Mayan Bee Sanctuary

The Mayan Bee Sanctuary is interesting for people of all ages to discover the stingless bee and the Melipona honey. Learn about the bees and the Mayan culture, as well as have an oppotunity to enjoy delicious honey and artisan chocolate.

11. Cozumel Pearl Farm

A hidden gem in Cozumel is the Cozumel Pearl Farm. Take a guided tour of a pearl farm and learn about the fascinating process of pearl cultivation. Kids can discover how pearls are formed and even purchase their own unique souvenir.

Cozumel Pearl Farm is a unique family-owned pearl farm situated on the pristine north shore of Cozumel Island, accessible only by boat due to its location within a protected natural area. There are a lot of very beautiful beaches and resort areas. However, Nachi Cocum offers a more exclusive beach day experience than what you’ll find at some of the more family friendly beach resorts.

At Nachi Cocum you’ll get an all-inclusive beach break excursion. It offers a beautiful beach, pool and jacuzzi and more. However, what sets it apart is that is limits the number of guests to only 130. Cozumel beaches can get very crowded, so having a more secluded beach feel is extra special.

17. Mayan Ruins of Tulum

Visiting Mayan Ruins is a bucket list item for many! One of the most well known and well preserved ruins are the Mayan Ruins in Tulum.

It’s known not only as an incredible archaeological site, and for it’s preserved temples and hieroglyphs, but also for it’s truly spectacular views overlooking the Caribbean Sea. This is definitely a place for Insta-worthy photos!

It’s about an hour away from Cozumel to Playa Del Carmen by ferry and is considered a full day excursion. While you can book this on your own, depending on what time your ship is due to leave the port, you may want to book this with the ship.

18. San Gervasio Ruins

If you would like to visit Mayan Ruins which are closer to the ship than Tulum, opt for an excursion to San Gervasio. These ruins are considered to be significant to the Mayan culture and an interesting archaeological site, which is only about 30 minutes away from the Cozumel cruise port.

Located in the San Miguel area of Cozumel, this small museum offers great information about Cozumel’s history including it’s Mayan past, it’s geography and it’s ecological side. You’ll also see ancient artifacts all for 4$ a person. There’s a nice restaurant on site with a beautiful view should you decide to stay for lunch.

For something completely different and unique, consider visiting Amazing Secret River. This is an underground river within stunning crystal caves where stalagmites surround you. This is a guided tour where you will get wet, as you’ll be swimming or wading through the waters.

This is located in Playa Del Carmen rather than on the mainland, so you will have to take a boat-ride there. My recommendation is to book with the cruise line or ensure you book with a reputable tour operator.

22. Take a Jeep or ATV Tour to Jade Cavern

The ultimate fun excursion is an off-road trip over to Jade Caverns by Jeep or ATV. You’ll see wildlife and vegetation along the way. Once you arrive at Jade Caverns, you’ll enjoy swimming in the breathtaking natural pool. If you’ve been to a Cozumel beach in the past, this is be a fun way to see a different part of the island.

I have not been to Cozumel yet. Cruise is leaving in 10 days. One thing to note, a lot of tours do not operate on Sundays. It was a bit frustrating trying to find excursions that operate on Sundays.

I recommend Money Bar for snorkeling. Its right on a reef so the snorkeling is great – saw a spotted eagle ray in March. Its a cheap and easy taxi ride and pay as you go. Overall a great day in Cozumel!

Many of the excursions here would be enjoyable. A food tour perhaps with shopping time? I wouldn’t say that Cozumel is as good a place to buy jewelry as St. Thomas or St. Martin, but ask on the cruise ship for reputable recommendations. Enjoy!

When it comes to Caribbean ports, there’s Cozumel … and then everywhere else. The Mexican island is booming and is the most busy cruise port in the word outside of departure ports in Florida. Each year, about four million people make a stop in Cozumel and every major cruise line that sails the Caribbean makes a call there.

Of course, that means there are millions of people looking for the best thing to do in the short time they are in Cozumel. The good news? There are plenty of options for you to choose from. Below, we’ve rounded up a definitive list of all the things you can do in Cozumel during a cruise visit.

We’ve tried to include helpful links for booking activities where appropriate. In many cases the items listed below can be booked via an excursion through your cruise ship.

1. Head to Mr. Sanchos Beach Club

Mr. Sanchos is one of many all-inclusive beach clubs on Cozumel. For about $70 per person, you get full access to the club, which includes a nice beach with beautiful water, pools, chairs, all you can eat/drink, showers, lockers, and more. It’s an easy way to enjoy the island’s beaches and get your fill of food and drink, all for one price. ( See our full list of Cozumel resorts with day passes here. )

2. Lounge on the Beach at the Pier (Puerta Maya)

If you dock at the main cruise pier for Carnival (Puerta Maya), then you can lounge on a manmade beach with great views of the ship. As you leave the pier and step onto land, hang a left past Fat Tuesday. Walk down a bit and on your left you’ll see a small beach with a number of loungers that are usually empty. This is a spot where passengers can visit, but many may not realize it.

The sand is white and soft, but just know there isn’t water access. Still, it’s free and convenient if you’re wanting to get off the ship and not go far.

3. Go Swimming at the Pier (International Pier)

There’s a manmade beach at the pier where Carnival ships dock, but nowhere to swim. It’s the opposite at the Royal Caribbean pier (International Pier) nearby. There, you’ll find a spot where there isn’t a beach, but there is a spot where you can climb a ladder down into the water and go for a dip. The water is crystal clear, and you’ll find lots of others swimming… and taking selfies as they swim with the ships right in the background.

4. Get a Family Photo in Front of the Ship

The free beach at the pier also offers a perfect view of the broadside of the cruise ships in port. Make your way there and get a photo of you standing with the ships in the background as a cheap souvenir to remember your trip. One hint is to take the picture earlier in the day as the angle of the ship will catch the morning sun and make the color really pop.

5. Pick Up Any Supplies You Might Have Forgotten

When you’re on a cruise ship, it’s not too easy just to run to the corner store and pick up anything you might have forgotten. But in port, you’ll find there are several small shops in the pier area that offer up nearly anything you can imagine. Hit the pharmacy or bodega shops to pick up items you might need like Ibuprofen, sunscreen, deodorant, or anything else. Yes, these may be available on the ship, but they are cheaper in port.

6. Drink Cheap at Three Amigos (or Other Bars)

The cruise ships will offer a lot of excursions and things to do in Cozumel, but they won’t mention that you can drink cheap, often just a stone’s throw away from the ship. Head into the pier area and you’ll see Three Amigos and several other bars and restaurants. These places are typically much cheaper than drinking on the ship, despite being only a short walk away.

7. Head to the Punta Sur Eco Park

Punta Sur — South Point if you don’t speak Spanish — is an ecological park on the south end of Cozumel. For a moderate admission fee ($19 per adult), you can hang out on the beach, snorkel, see wildlife in its natural habitat (including crocs and sea turtles), and get a scenic view from the historic lighthouse. 8. Visit Chankanaab Park

Located about 10 minutes south of the main cruise port, Chankanaab is a massive park with tons of things to do. The main draw of the park is a large beach that sits right on a rocky shore. The water is crystal clear and offers great snorkeling. In addition there is a pool, restaurants, a dolphin center, sea lion show, nature walk, and more. It costs about $25 per person (kids 12 and under are cheaper), with additional prices for swimming with dolphins, ziplining, and other attractions.

9. Go Tequila Tasting

What would Mexico be without tequila? If you are an aficionado… or simply like tequila, then there are plenty of excursions that offer the chance to eat authentic Mexican food and taste test different tequilas. Check them out through your cruise line excursion desk. They usually also include lunch.

10. Go Ziplining Through the Jungle

In the touristy spots of the Yucatan, ziplines are everywhere. You’ll find ziplines at the theme parks in the area, including Chankanaab just a few miles from the cruise pier. Suit up, strap in, and glide over the jungle canopy. Not sure how to make your way to the zipline? Your ship will offer an excursion you can book.

11. Eat Tasty Mexican Food at Pancho’s Backyard

Want some guacamole or a quesadilla? Try Pancho’s Backyard in the area right around the Carnival cruise port. The place is famous for its margaritas and offers affordable dining with a gorgeous view of the cruise ships.

12. Souvenir Shop at the Pier

From t-shirts to glassware to hammocks to Mexican art, the area around the cruise piers has something for everyone. You can take time to stroll through the shopping areas and find anything you can think of with “Cozumel” written on it. When it comes to souvenirs, you won’t be without options.

13. Explore Underwater and Take a Snorkel Tour

Cozumel is as well known for what’s under the water as what is above it. With an electric blue sea and gentle waves, the island is a snorkeler’s paradise. The waters surrounding the island are also abundant with colorful tropical fish. Through your cruise line you will find plenty of excursions offering snorkeling trips. You can also rent gear at nearly any beach club you visit.

14. Hit the Closest Beaches at Park Royal & El Cid

Want to get on the beach as quick as possible… and without going far from the ship? While there is a free “beach” in the port area where Carnival docks, it’s manmade without access to the water. And in the area where Royal Caribbean docks there is access to the water, but no beach. 

If you want both, head just a little north of the main cruise pier to the Park Royal resort . or El Cid La Ceiba Beach . There you can get a day pass to lounge on their beaches and use their facilities. It’s just a short walk from the ship.

15. See Ancient Ruins at Tulum

Whether you realize it or not, you’ve seen Tulum. Located on the mainland, the ancient Mayan city is one of the most photographed destinations in the world. The buildings go right up to the cliffsides overlooking the water and stand dramatically over the scenery. Book an excursion and you can go visit the ruins for a few hours, usually followed by beach time, with swimming next to the ruins.

16. Walk Cozumel’s Malecón

In the downtown area of San Miguel (Cozumel’s main city), you can walk the wide malecon with the beach on one side and shops and restaurants on the other. It’s free, a great way to work on the tan, and you can also pop in and out of any place that seems interesting. Just be prepared for taxis to give you a beep as they pass, seeing if you want a ride!

17. Make a Visit to the Cozumel Island Museum

Want a little culture on your cruise? Head to the Museo de la Isla de Cozumel  located in San Miguel. The museum covers the history of Cozumel, including some interesting exhibits showcasing items from both the Mayans and the Spanish. It’s only a few bucks to see, and best of all it’s a good way to get in some air conditioning on a hot day.

18. Party Down at Fat Tuesday

The first spot you’ll see as you exit the ship (if docked at the Puerta Maya, the most southern cruise pier) and make your way off the pier is a Fat Tuesday . This Mardi Gras-themed place has tons of drink specials and is right near the pier. In other words, it’s a party atmosphere. If you want to get a drink and party while in port, it’s the place to be… and a short walk back to the ship should you have one too many.

19. Visit Your Own “Private” Beach for Free (Playa Stingray)

Perhaps the ultimate in status symbols is a private beach. Well, Playa Stingray is public, but most people don’t know about it, so chances are you will be all by yourself if you decide to visit. Walk up the road toward town from the cruise piers and you’ll come to Playa Stingray after about 15 minutes. Walk down the easily missed stairway and there you are. 

The shore is a bit rocky, so water shoes are a good idea. And while the beach isn’t white-sand, it’s also likely to be all yours… and you can’t beat that.

20. Visit the Discover Mexico Park for Gardens, Margs, and Models

The variety offered as the Discover Mexico Park makes the place a little hard to explain. It’s a cultural park where you will find botanical gardens, models of famous Mexican buildings, and a Mexican art museum alongside tequila tastings, margarita bars, and showcases on traditional chocolate making. If you want to spend a day off the beach, it’s a good option.

21. Hit the Beach at Paradise Beach Cozumel

What’s not to like for beach lovers? Located just a few minutes south of the cruise ships, Paradise Beach is a beach club offering up a huge freshwater pool, white sand beaches, and crystal blue water. Sit on a lounger under the palm trees while the kids conquer the in-water obstacle course. Restaurants and bars are on-site meaning you can spend an entire day here, no problem. You should be a smart shopper, however, and know what’s a fair price before you shop. Don’t just assume you’re getting a good deal.

23. Eat, Drink, and Snorkel at the Money Bar Beach Club

How many restaurants have you been to where you can eat with your feet in the sand and then go snorkeling? The Money Bar Beach Club , located just a few minutes south of the cruise pier, offers just that. Head over and get your fill of food and drink before hanging out on the beach and taking in some of the gorgeous snorkeling right in front of the restaurant. Just keep in mind that the spot has a rocky shore (like most of the west side of Cozumel). So there is a beach, a rocky wall, and then water.

24. Lounge and Snorkel at Playa Palancar

Located on the strip of beach clubs south of the cruise piers and on the western side of the island, Playa Palancar is technically a free beach . Entrance is free, however, you are expected to purchase food and drinks and there are also rentals like chairs and umbrellas. Facilities are also available. For people searching for a cheaper alternative to the beach clubs (which can cost $60+ per person), it’s a great deal.

25. Take an Unspoiled Trip to the Cozumel Pearl Farm

You likely won’t find the Cozumel Pearl Farm on excursions lists from the cruise ships, but it’s the highest rated attraction in the area. In fact, it’s one of the more undiscovered things to do on the island. The trip is a little rustic and not a ton of people go on it. That’s actually a big draw. Located on the northern part of the island — via a boat ride and away from the crowds — the tour offers education into an actual pearl farm, plus snorkeling and beach time.

26. Visit the Mayan Ruins of San Gervasio

The Yucatan was a hotbed for the Mayan civilization, and Cozumel is no different. Today you can take a cab and explore these ruins located in the middle of the island . The site isn’t as large as major cities like Tulum or Chichen Itza, but still worthy of your time. Plus, it’s a convenient way to see Mayan ruins without having to take an all-day trek to the mainland.

27. Head Out to Go Scuba Diving

Of course Cozumel is a world-famous dive spot. Hook up with a local dive company (if you’re certified) and have them take you to the best spots. There are also lots of classes for beginners. The area is ripe with reefs, offering divers a ton to explore. Meanwhile, the waters surrounding the island are relatively shallow, making it ideal for beginners.

Sailing to Cozumel on Royal Caribbean? Many of their ships have dive centers on board that can get you ready to go before you reach the island.

28. Get a Birdseye View With Parasailing

Strap in and get ready to see the best views of Cozumel if you go parasailing. Several companies offer trips for about $60 per person for roughly 15 minutes. Head toward downtown on the main street to find places offering to take you up. Or you can book online — or through you cruise line — at a few places before you set sail.

29. Explore XCaret

Pronounced “ex-cah-ray” the theme park is a fun mixture of culture, water, food, and fun . Learn about the history and culture of the region before snorkeling and swimming in crystal-clear lagoons and underground rivers. There are also wildlife exhibits, or you can just hang out, have a drink and lounge by the water. The park is located on the mainland, so be sure to include extra time for transportation.

30. Go on an Adventure at Xplor

If you’re seeking adventure during your time in Mexico, check out Xplor . The theme park is carved out of the jungle, offering high-octane rides like ziplines and amphibious vehicle excursions, and ziplines. The big draw is the underground river that runs through a series of caves for you to explore. This is a great for kids as well as adults.

31. Explore the Waters at Xel-Ha Theme Park

From the same people who brought tourists XCaret, Xel-Ha (pronounced “shell-ha”) is another theme park that takes advantage of the ocean inlets and small rivers of clear water. Here you can snorkel, swim, waterslide, rope swing, and even cliff jump. There are also ziplines, bike rides and jungle trails if you want to have fun away from the water.

32. Take a Boat Ride to Passion Island

On the northern side of the Cozumel is a small spit of land that’s dubbed Isla Pasion (Passion Island). To get there involves a scenic boat ride up the coast before you make your stop at the beautiful white sand beach. Book an excursion through the cruise lines and it normally comes with open bar and lunch served as you lounge on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. 

33. Compete in The Amazing Race: Cozumel

If you love The Amazing Race on television, this is your chance to compete in a real-life version of it . You’ll hunt for clues and complete tasks around Cozumel and San Miguel, competing against other teams. It’s a chance to have some fun, but also get a unique tour. It’s great for families with older kids, but wear walking shoes and expect to sweat!

34. Walk on the Bottom of the Sea

Sure you can go snorkeling. But that sticks you on the surface. Instead, with the Sea Trek helmet, you can actually walk on the bottom of the seafloor . The helmet fits over your head and shoulders, with an air hose attached. With this you can dive under the surface and explore just like you would if scuba diving, all without the heavy tanks or awkward fins.

35. Get a Look Underwater on a Submarine

If you want to get a look underwater without getting wet, there is an excursion you can take that allows you to ride in an actual submarine and slip below the waves. There you can check out the coral and abundant wildlife in the waters off Cozumel . It’s ideal for those who want a look under the sea, but may not be up to snorkeling in open water.

36. Get Your Thrills on a Jet Boat Ride

Jet boats are essentially full boat-sized jet skis. They can carry about a dozen people and knife through the water, with the ability to accelerate quickly and make quick 360-degree turns. In other words, it’s like a roller coaster on the water. In Cozumel you can hop a ride to get your adrenaline pumping. Just check your cruise line’s excursion lineup to find it. If you book the excursion, it’s usually accompanied with some beach time and lunch.

37. Hire a Taxi for an Island Tour

What better way to see the island then with a local driving you around? Taxis on the island are happy to take you on a full tour so you can explore the sights at your own pace. Best of all, you’ll have a personal driver who will go wherever you want whenever you want to get there. So you can hit the beach, the town, the Mayan ruins on the island, and make it back to the ship without breaking a sweat.

38. Head Across the Island for a Less Crowded Beach

While most cruise passengers hang out on the western side of the island, the beaches on the eastern side are typically offer nicer sand and much less crowded. Be careful, this side of the island is usually windier and the water can be a bit rougher. Still, if the weather is good it’s a great way to head to a beach without the big crowds. Just be sure that you have a way to get back. With fewer tourists, there are fewer transportation options this way.

39. Try Your Hand at Snuba Diving

You’ve heard of snorkeling. You’ve heard of scuba diving. But what about snuba? It’s a mixture of the two. Like snorkeling you don’t have to worry about air tanks, and like scuba diving you can go below the water. The key is that you have a long air hose to breathe through, giving you full mobility to go deep below the surface. Tours are available around the island or through the cruise ship excursions.

40. Make a Stop at the Casino

Yes, there will be a casino on the ship, but if you can’t get enough of trying your luck, what about a little play in a Mexican casino? At the very least, it will be an interesting story to share back home. 

If you walk out of the port area, right as you exit you’ll see the Royal Village Shopping Center. Within this center is the casino (next to the Hard Rock Café), with a huge sign that you can’t miss. Now, don’t expect a huge Vegas-style resort. Instead, it’s a relatively small spot, but a nice way to kill some time in the air conditioning if you have time to spare before heading back to the ship.

41. Take a 4×4 Tour Into the Jungle

Want to get a little wild? Cruise lines offer 4×4 excursions — either on a four-wheeler or on an ATV buggy — through the jungle. You’ll likely get a little dirty, but that’s the point. After the trek, you usually then have a few hours to hang on the beach and have lunch provided. It’s not a bad way to spend the day for people that want some adventure.

42. Head Out Deep Sea Fishing

For decades before tourism, Cozumel was all about fishing. These days you can charter a boat to head out for a few hours and fish the rich waters off the coast. It’s ideal if there are several people going along so that you can split the cost of a charter. Just one thing to know is that you can’t bring fish back with you on the cruise ship due to customs issues.

43. Explore the Neighborhoods of San Miguel

Most tourists see only the main promenade that runs right by the water or the touristy shops and restaurants. But take a turn into town and you can find some cute houses and sights in the neighborhoods of San Miguel. It’s a cool way to get a feel for authentic Mexico. One thing that sticks out is the lush foliage that seems to be everywhere.

44. Visit “La Farmacia” for Prescriptions You Might Need

Do you have expensive prescriptions back home? Or maybe there’s medicine — like those little blue pills — that requires a prescription in the United States, but doesn’t in Mexico. In the port area you’ll find pharmacies where you can go shopping and get a deal, or pick up something you wouldn’t be able to get back home. Just be aware of any laws about bringing pharmaceuticals back home.

45. Have a Margarita at… Margaritaville

If you don’t want to go far and have a lot of fun, there is a Margaritaville right near the main cruise pier where Royal Caribbean ships dock. Head down and sip a margarita (or any other libation) while the tunes play and you munch on your bar favorites like burgers and nachos. Best of all if you have a little too much to eat… or drink… it’s a very short walk back to the ship. (Note: This is at the port area for the Royal Caribbean pier)

46. Eat the Highest-Rated Burrito in Town

Want a cheap and easy lunch? Crazy King Burrito is among the highest-rated place to eat in town according to TripAdvisor, coming in with a perfect 5.0 rating after more than 1,300 reviews. The specialty is burritos (obviously), which are rather large and perfect if you had a little too much to drink the night before. Pair it with a cold Mexican beer or a glass bottle of Coca-Cola, and you have the perfect lunch.

47. Grab a Treat at Chocolateria Isla Bella

One of the top-rated place to eat on the island isn’t even a restaurant. TripAdvisor rates Chocolateria Isla Bella as a top restaurant. In actuality it’s a small chocolate shop with tons of tasty dessert treats. Stop in and pick up a dozen of the chocolate bites to take back to your cabin.

48. Eat Some Great Italian at Rolandis

Rolandis has several locations in the Yucatan, including nearby Cancun and Isla Mujeres. There’s a good reason for its popularity — great Italian food in beautiful surroundings. Pizza and breads are wood-fired, and you have a wide choice of seafood and pastas. The view is killer, and the restaurant is also a great option for vegetarians.

49. Take a Water Taxi to Playa del Carmen

If you haven’t had enough boat rides in taking a cruise, try one of the fast-moving ferries that goes the 12 miles from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen on the mainland. The trip is fun — the ferries offer great views, as well as indoor and outdoor seating. Once in Playa del Carmen, you can hit the beach, grab some lunch, or go shopping. Just be sure to get back in time to get back on the ship.

50. Explore and Swim in a Cenote

Cenotes (pronounced say-NO-tays) are large caverns where underground water has made its way to the surface. Because of the rock this water has gone through, it’s highly filtered freshwater that’s crystal clear… and cold. The mainland area around Cozumel is rich with cenotes and they make amazing swimming spots to explore. Several excursions will take you to these spots where you can swim and enjoy the natural beauty that the Yucatan has to offer.

51. Drive Your Own Speed Boat

Cozumel is known for having a lot of adventurous things to do, and it’s a good spot to try some things you simply wouldn’t be able to do back home. One favorite we’ve personally done is an excursion through the cruise line that featured snorkeling combined with speed boats. Every couple gets their own personal speed boat to drive to the snorkeling spot. That’s fun on its own, but then you get to hop out and take a guided snorkel trip seeing all sorts of creatures, including turtles and rays.

52. Take a Tour of Chichen Itza

Often cited as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, Chichen Itza is the most famous of the Mayan cities in the Yucatan. It’s a few hours from Cozumel, but several tours will take you there and get you back before your cruise departs. Be aware, a trip to Chichen Itza will take all day. It’s not ideal if you’re traveling with small kids. Your cruise line will have excursions offered to the wonder.

53. Head out on a Catamaran Tour

There is no shortage of way to get on the water in Cozumel. Case in point are the catamaran tours that offer the chance to sail in the crystal waters off the island, snorkel, and eat lunch . Most cruise lines will have this as an option on their excursions. Expect prices to run between $70-100 per person.

54. Go Horseback Riding Along the Beach

Horseback riding is a unique way to see Cozumel. Trips are offered around the island (including Mr. Sanchos) and can take you around the jungle, on the beach, or both. Note that weight and mobility limits may apply. You don’t need prior experience in order to ride.

55. Hop on a Bike Tour of the Island

Want to get your exercise while also doing some sightseeing? Check out a bike tour of the island . It’s a cheap way to get around and see the sights without having to keep to anyone else’s schedule. They also offer electric bikes so you don’t have to do all the pedaling in the heat. If you do go, pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and a good hat.

56. Have a Spa Day on the Ship

Ok, technically it’s not something to do in Cozumel, but when in port, it’s a great time to hit the spa on the ship. On port days most people leave the ship meaning the spa has a lot more openings for its services. Hang out on the ship, get a massage and do it on your schedule! In fact, sometimes you can get discounted prices if you head to the spa on a day that the ship is in port.

57. See the Stars at the Planetarium

One of the little-known gems of the island is its planetarium . The Cha’an Ka’an facility is open Tuesday through Saturday and offers a 3-D projection dome, astronomy shows, and even an observatory. It’s a cheap way to spend the day in the air conditioning while seeing some cool things. 

58. Have a Drink and Party at Senor Frogs

Sure it’s a little bit touristy, but there’s a reason that places like Senor Frogs are popular — they are a lot of fun. There’s one right by the cruise ships and you can hang out right next to the most beautiful water in the world, having a blast with other cruise passengers. If you want to be more low-key, snag a table around the edge of the restaurant instead of by the bar.

59. Check Your Email With Free Wi-Fi

If you don’t pay for wi-fi on the ship, you can find it in the port area. Pancho’s Backyard (listed above) has free wi-fi for their customers and you’ll find other networks around the port. Spend a few minutes checking in back home, writing an email, or making video calls to tell everyone how much you’re enjoying your trip.

60. Pick Up Some Mexican Vanilla

Mexican vanilla is famous the world over for its flavor. And while it’s not as popular an export as tequila, many people still stock up while they are in port. Take home a big bottle that will last you for years. They are for sale in several shops around the port.

61. Take Your Photo in Front of the Cozumel Sign

One of the best spots to have your picture taken is in front of the Cozumel sign. In the background you’ll have the ships docked, and you’ll never forget where you were. The sign is located at the pier where Margaritaville is located and where Royal Caribbean normally docks. You might not be able to access it if your ship docks at the other piers.

There is also another Cozumel sign (pictured at the start of this article) if you walk north from the port area for about five minutes, which sits right in front of the beach.

62. People Watch at the “Grand Canyon” of Cozumel

No, Cozumel doesn’t have any real canyons. But when the big cruise ships dock, they tower over the pier, creating the feeling of being at the bottom of a canyon. Best of all, it’s usually shady (because the ships block the sun) and breezy. There are benches where you can sit and enjoy the cool breeze while watching passengers go back and forth. It’s a nice way to relax before you head back on the ship.

63. Do Nothing!

For some people, it’s the most boring thing imaginable. For others, it’s the best way to relax. It’s your vacation. If you want to just stay on the ship and enjoy some peace and quiet while everyone else on the ship heads into port. Sit by the empty pool, have a drink in hand, and enjoy yourself without ever stepping on shore.

Is it safe to take a taxi?

Absolutely. The tourist areas of Cozumel (especially when ships are in) are safe. Running afoul of cruise passengers would hurt the taxi cabs greatly.

Just do a search for “Cozumel wedding spots” or “Cozumel vow renewal” and you’ll find a lot of options. We personally don’t know of a specific spot.

Cruises to Cozumel, 5 Things To Do While In Port

If you are heading to Cozumel on a cruise and are looking for something to do while in port, here are a few options that you don’t want to overlook.  Contrary to what you may hear, there are a lot of great things to do in Cozumel, Mexico.

Ruins in Tulum

The reason that Cruise Fever recommends that you book through the cruise line is because you will have to take a ferry over to mainland Mexico, and then a bus to Tulum.  On my last cruise to Cozumel, the ferry carrying the passengers that went to Tulum arrived a little less than 30 minutes before the cruise left port.

The Mayan ruins in Tulum are set on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean, making for picturesque views.  The ruins are unlike any other that you can visit in the Caribbean and something that should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Paradise Beach

Paradise Beach is one of the nicest beaches in Cozumel and only a 10 minute cab ride from the port.  There are a variety of activities and something for everyone.

The beach is lined with palm trees and beach chairs.  It is a great place to relax in the shade of the palm trees or work on your tan in the sun.  The loungers do cost $3 with a $10 minimum food purchase.  This also gives you access to the pool.

The pool is one of the largest swimming pools in Cozumel.  It is a beautiful tropical area that has a bar, changing area, and a few shops.

On the beach, you can get a massage, rent a waverunner, and even para sail.  Paradise Beach really has everything.  Even though there are a ton of activities, I had no problem finding a quiet place to sit and relax.

Search Cruises to Cozumel

There are a number of places that rent cars and jeeps in Cozumel.  I saw two car rental agencies, Alamo and Target.  I rented a car from Target for $45 (plus taxes/fees/insurance) for the day. When I got home and looked at my credit card bill, it said Alamo so they are really the same company just running with two different names and storefronts.

Car rentals start at $40 for a stick shift and $45 for an automatic.  The advantage of renting a car is that you can drive the loop around the island exploring the different beaches, shops and local restaurants along the way.  The drive is really beautiful and there are some great spots to snorkel. One recommendation is to always rent a car/jeep from a reputable company.

Yes, the locals can be a little aggressive trying to sell you things when you walk around Cozumel.  However, the port area can be a fun place to walk around and shop as you take in a little Mexican culture.  I saw 3 older men dressed in traditional Mexican outfits playing guitars and singing to a young couple.  It really set the mood for my day in port.

There are all of the traditional stores (Diamonds International, Cariloha etc.)  that you find in most cruise ports.  There are also a number of great Mexican restaurants located right on the water.

If you want to party in Cozumel, Fat Tuesdays, Margaritaville, and Senor Frogs are always lively and a good time.

Discover Mexico Park

If you want to immerse yourself in the country’s vibrant culture and traditions, Discover Mexico Park is the place to visit.  The islands oldest ruins are located here.

You can often see macaws, iguanas, and turtles in the tropical gardens. There is an abundance of tropical plant life including coconuts, papayas, and bananas.  Since it is not a large area, it will only take about an hour to visit the park.

Discover Mexico Park is rated the 5th (out of 89) most popular attraction in Cozumel.

Cozumel Port Map

A map of Cozumel might help you familiarize yourself with this unique island.  This is the map I used when I first went to Cozumel on a cruise and I found it very helpful.  The yellow line on the map is the road you can follow if you rent a scooter or car and easily explore the island and all it’s beaches along the way.

Using this map and some common sense makes it almost impossible to get lost.  One of my favorite Cozumel activities is to stop at 3 or 4 of these beaches (marked by the umbrella) and spend 30 minutes or more just walking around or soaking in some sun.  You can also see where the Mayan ruins are located and some other popular attractions.

You can drive the yellow marked loop in just a few hours even if you make a few stops along the way.

Other options worth considering: Mr. Sanchos, Chankanaab National Park, ATV adventure, America’s Cup, and Cozumel Cave Tour.

Don’t over look Chankanaab.  It is one of our favorite places to visit on the island.   There is a cost to get in but it includes a very interesting sea lion show, an alligator park, incredibly beautiful and maintained beaches, and even a little self-guided tour of some Mayan history.

Check out the video tour of Chankanaab at Cozumel in the video below.  Sorry it’s a bit shaky, but it will give you a basic idea of all the things offered at this park.

If you’ve never been to Cozumel before I highly recommend checking out Chankanaab.  From the cruise port just drive south and you will see the signs for it.

Any chocolate lovers out there?

Most cruisers don’t even know this one exists.  I had a really fun and intuitive tour at the Kaokao Chocolate Factory on Cozumel on one occasion.  You get to see how the locals make chocolate, and then you get to make it yourself and try a few samples along the way.  It’s a short taxi ride to get there, but it’s something different to try.

Cozumel Cruise Ports Walking Distance Guide for 2024

Walking is my favorite way to get to know a new place, and Cozumel’s walkability is a huge selling point to living here for so long. I’ve poked around almost every block in San Miguel, and can assure you that if you opt for a nice simple port day in Cozumel on foot, it can really pay off.

Walking around Cozumel is really safe and secure, too.

If you’re cruising to Cozumel and want to avoid tours and lines and overpriced cruise excursions, what could be easier than stepping off your cruise ship pier and simply walking to some great nearby activities?

No need for a complicated itinerary, an additional ferry ride, or confusion over directions or taxis (though Cozumel taxis are really safe and easy too – read more here ).

And no worries about getting back to your ship on time.

Just an easy stroll along the island’s warm sunny streets and sandy shores – with some great stops for food & drink , shopping, and fun things to do along the way.

For instance, if your ship docks at Punta Langosta, you’ll find yourself in the heart of downtown San Miguel de Cozumel. Here, you can easily explore the town’s colorful streets on foot or venture further afield by renting a scooter or catching a taxi near the terminal.

The International Pier and Puerta Maya, on the other hand, are located slightly further south of downtown San Miguel.

• Casa Denis is the oldest restaurant in Cozumel, located in the southeast quadrant of the central Plaza Benito Juarez. Once you find the landmark orange clock tower, just ask – you’ll be steps away from Casa Denis.
• La Chef is a wonderful little cafe on the waterfront stretch of Melgar Avenue, just north of the museum. La Chef is famous for its lobster sandwich, and I have to agree it’s a must try!

Cozumel Beaches within Walking Distance to Cruse Pier

There are no large beach clubs in the downtown area, but that doesn’t mean cruise passengers can’t find a nice place to take a quick dip near Punta Langosta.  And you don’t need a snorkeling excursion to experience some of Cozumel’s best-known water activities.

These three spots are the most accessible places to get in a bit of swimming or snorkeling, right in downtown San Miguel de Cozumel :

• Hemingway is another great waterfront restaurant just north of La Monina (see above), and has a small nice beach area where people swim, snorkel, and even do some Cozumel shore diving . Rent or buy some snorkel gear, and see what the fuss is all about. 
• La Malecón is another name for a waterfront promenade road in Spanish, and in Cozumel, Rafael Melgar Avenue is The Malecón. Walk along “Melgar” anywhere downtown and you’ll be steps from the clear blue Caribbean. You’ll see a few places that make it easy to jump in in the water and cool off, plus there are lots of snorkel boats at the Cozumel passenger ferry pier in case you decide to take a snorkel tour out on the reefs . 
• La Playa Caletita is one of the main public sandy beaches in Cozumel located about .75 miles (1 kilometer) south of Punta Langosta cruise pier. This beach is small, but it’s free and very nice! Located right next to a large white lighthouse that serves the car ferry pier and is also flanked by a few fun waterfront places to eat and get your drink on. You’re very likely to rub elbows with some locals at this spot, and it’s a nice safe walk, there and back . 

Shopping within Walking Distance of Punta Langosta Cruise Pier in Cozumel

Punta Langosta Mall is the obvious first choice, since you’ll disembark and be funneled right through the terminal mall, itself.

Punta Langosta Mall has souvenir shops, clothing boutiques, a Starbucks, and several great places to eat. It can get a little congested with fellow passengers, lots of taxis, and general foot traffic, but it’s well maintained and a great place to pit stop on your way off or back onto you cruise.

Rafael Melgar Avenue is Cozumel’s main drag. This avenue stretches right along the waterfront, and from Punta Langosta, you’ll walk a couple blocks south to find a few great stores and waterfront eateries, or north to hit up all the fancy jewelry stores and duty-free shops on your way to the center of down and the Parque Benito Juarez plaza (see below).

Cultural Opportunities within Walking Distance

Benito Juarez Plaza is Cozumel’s town zócalo , or central town square.

Full of shopping and restaurants, Parque Benito Juarez could take up a day alone, especially if you just want to find some great food, poke around shops full of colorful and handmade goodies , or belly-up to a fun bar and trade tall tales with other travelers. 

The Museum of Cozumel is a great place to to duck out of the sun for a bit, and learn about the island’s natural history, as well as its rich history of Mayan traditions, its role during the era of European exploration, and a load of interesting stories about Cozumel in the 20th and 21st Cs. 

Huichol Art Gallery is a small gallery right on Melgar Avenue that features impressive examples of traditional Huichol artwork, and intricate beading work, specifically. 

Seawalls public murals are sprinkled throughout town, thanks to two international public events that draw attention to the importance of conserving our oceans through the amazing large-scale work of mural artists from around the world who came together to help remind us to “Protect What You Love.” See how many you spot as you walk around town.

The International Cruise Terminal in Cozumel

Check your cruise itinerary and see if your cruise ship docks instead at The International Pier in Cozumel. If you’re on a Royal Caribbean or a Celebrity Cruise ship, most likely you’ll be here.

Cozumel’s International Cruise Terminal is located 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) south of Punta Langosta, but there are some great places to eat and shop – along with a safe, easy, flat, and beautiful walk along the bright blue Caribbean – in between.  

The International Cruise Pier in Cozumel

Cozumel’s International Cruise terminal is close to some popular destinations like the Cozumel Park Royal Resort, the Atlantis Submarine ride, and several highly regarded dive shops . 

There’s plenty of souvenir shopping right around the International Pier complex, as well as some quality stores for the cruise traveler who might need non-touristy things , like a new bathing suit, 

Restaurants and Bars within Walking Distance of Cozumel International Pier

Ernestos Fajitas Factory is on the waterfront, about 500 yards (.5 km) north of the International terminal exit. Ernestos is an old-school popular place in Cozumel, featuring delicious fajitas and a second-floor balcony with stunning views. 

Coco Cafe is a stylish new coffee shop another block or two north of Ernestos. Part of a successful restaurant group in Cozumel, Coco Cafe is the perfect place to start the day with a cup of good Mexican coffee and a selection of light pastries and sandwiches.

Coco is in a small strip of stores, including a new pharmacy and an Oxxo convenience store, so overall this is a handy pit stop within easy walking distance of either southern cruise pier and perfect no matter what you plan for the rest of your day. 

This strip is also home to Beach Bum Bikes , which is my favorite place to rent electric bikes and do one of the most fun and stress-free eco-friendly activities on the island.  Get more deets right here . 

Paprika Restaurant is tucked into the greenery just before you get to Coco Cafe. Paprika is a nice sit-down cafe that specializes in breakfast and lunch, as well as fresh juices and smoothies. 

Tikila Beach Bar is right across the street from Paprika, and right on the water. In fact, in the last few years, Tikila has really grown its scuba diving offerings and is one of the best places to go for a shore dive in Cozumel .  But at its heart, it’s a great little bar and grill with a cool balcony area to have a cold beer and watch the boats go by for a while. 

Hard Rock Cafe Cozume l has a large location in the Royal Village Shopping Mall, directly across from the International Cruise Terminal. Not exactly an authentic local experience, but hey, their T-shirt game is still pretty strong. 

Beaches within Walking Distance of Cozumel’s International Pier

Del mar latino beach club cozumel – nice short walk.

Del Mar Latino Beach Club is a new fun choice for a beach day, and it’s one of the closest beaches at just a few hundred yards (less than 1km) north of the pier, so it’s easily within walking distance of the International cruise terminal and Puerta Maya.

Built on the long reputation of Casa del Mar Dive Hotel , the Del Mar Latino Beach Club is a relatively small beach club situated very close to the southern cruise ships. It’s got a huge bar, a full menu, music, great lounge chairs, water and snorkeling access, and a nice pool and hot tub. Their prices are really reasonable, too.  

Del Mar Latino Beach Club is right next door to the Cozumel Marine World Dive shop , so if you want to rent some snorkel gear and check out their house reef, or maybe try your hand at a Discover Scuba Class, they’re a great place to start.

• Pool, Hot tub, and beach entry
• Full menu and bar

Cozumel Park Royal Resort ‘s all-inclusive day pass is another option in that same locale, but with a higher price tag, given Park Royal’s larger facilities, multiple pools, and more bar options. 

Sunset Beach & Bar in Cozumel is a cool waterfront spot that’s another .5-mile walk north on Melgar. It only takes another 10 minutes or so to walk to Sunset Beach, but it’s worth it for the fresh juice mojitos, alone!

Sunset Beach has strong, free wifi , a fun bar setting, and a full menu. Plus, it’s right on the shore of the Caribbean. They have snorkeling gear, too!

Shopping within Walking Distance

Royal Village Shopping Mall is located directly across the street from the International Cruise Terminal and just about 500 yards (.5 km) north of Puerta Maya. 

The well-appointed outdoor strip mall has a large sporting goods store called Martí (similar to a Foot Locker store), a day spa, a convenience store, various gift shops, and a few restaurants including the Hard Rock Cozumel, Carl’s Jr., and more.  (Read more about the shopping opportunities near the cruise ports right here .) 

Street Carts with vendors selling things are also out on the street as you walk around this area, so keep your eye out for hand-painted straw hats, beaded jewelry, and small pottery items. 

The Mayan Plaza is probably the most fun shopping to do near both southern cruise terminals, International and Puerta Maya.

While it’s undoubtedly meant for high tourist activity, there are fun shops full of legit leatherwork and Mexican crafts and souvenirs, some photo ops like a (very) small recreation of the famous Chichen Itza Mayan ruin site, and a multicolored COZUMEL sign to take pictures with.

Puerta Maya also has a number of bars and restaurants, including one oddball you should try: an absolutely delicious and authentic Chinese place, on the north side of the Mayan Plaza.  Primarily aimed at cruise ship crew members, this place is a real score for those of us who live here, and – apologies! – occasionally crave more international fare. 

The Mayan Plaza also features daily performances by a group of amazing Voladores, or “the flyers” – a beautiful and thrilling cultural tradition from preclassical times. This is a free activity that is ideal for kids and families .

Troupes of Voladores (or “flyers) in colorful garb climb a large central pole to death-defying heights, and perform an amazing aerial acrobatic routine to the sound of a haunting traditional flute.

Yes, it is somewhat “touristy” but in the best way. These artists are incredible to watch, and if you’ve never seen a Mexican Voladores performance before, let Cozumel be your first. 

Atlantis Submarine excursion is another special treat that’s easily walkable from the International Pier or the Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal. 

This is especially great for people who would love to see what goes on on the coral reefs but aren’t quite willing to try SCUBA diving – though as you can see from our review of Cozumel’s best ship wreck dive the C-53 , you might see active divers if you ride in the submarine.

The Atlantis Submarine Cozumel experience is another of the many activities on the island that’s great for families .  Located right next to the Del Mar Latino Beach Club (highlighted, above), so a very easy walk from either cruise facility. 

Unique and fun experience. See the sea in a new way. Great for kids and families!

Puerta Maya Cruise Pier in Cozumel

The Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal in Cozumel is the most recently built facility and primarily serves cruise ship passengers arriving on Carnival Cruise Line ships in Cozumel.

A.k.a. The Carnival Cozumel Port

The three cruise piers in Cozumel sometimes welcome cruise lines that aren’t their typical tenants, and help each other when necessary.

That said, the Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal is Cozumel is familiarly known as the Carnival Cozumel port , as it’s almost exclusively for Carnival ships.

Amenities Within Walking Distance of Cozumel’s Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal and Piers

Situated just a couple of blocks south of the International Pier, Puerta Maya is the closest to the Mayan Plaza open-air shopping plaza (see above) , as well as several pharmacies, convenience stores, and some independent (and delicious) southeast Asian restaurants that are popular with cruise ship crew members.

As you disembark at Puerta Maya Cruise Pier Terminal, head north (left) on the main road and soon you’ll encounter the International Pier, the Royal Village shopping mall (see more above), and all the other amenities recommended in the previous section.

These two southern cruise terminals in Cozumel are basically next-door neighbors, so the tips above will cover those of you on the Carnival cruise ships to Cozumel, also.

In other words, Puerta Maya is also very close and within easy walking distance of the Del Mar Latino Beach Club in Cozumel, the Park Royal Resort, Sunset Bar on the waterfront, and all the others listed above.

Why You Might Still Want To Take A Taxi In Cozumel

As tempting as it may be to explore the vibrant streets of Cozumel on foot, there are some good reasons to consider taking a Cozumel taxi instead .

The island offers a whole lot of other natural and cultural gems, popular beaches, and breathtaking sights that are located a bit too far away from the cruise piers to be considered “walking distance.”

Beautiful remote beaches stretch far beyond the vicinity of downtown and the Cozumel Cruise Pier Terminals.

So if you are up for some more exploring, why limit yourself to just a small slice of paradise when there’s so much more to discover?

Learn how the resurrected city named Merida was christened in 1542 and a unique culture has evolved from Mayan roots. See the culture reflected everywhere, from the character of its architecture to the cuisine and people. View Montejo’s Boulevard, inspired by France’s Champs D’elyse. See the Cathedral, built in 1560 from stones that once belonged to the pyramid of Xbacluum- Chaan.
