Theodore Horowitz, better known by his stage name ‘Popa Chubby’, cuts an imposing figure as he walks on stage, guitar in hand, and a simple vest and trousers. This sets the audience up for a night of back to basics, no frills attached, Blues and Rock ’N’ Roll. Mixing his set between his own originals from is nearly 3 decades long career, as well as some choice covers, his set is a guaranteed crowd pleaser. Showing off his fantastic guitar capabilities at every opportunity, on his own tracks as well as old blues standards, his set is an electrifying watch. Where he adds depth to his performance is in showing off his equally impressive vocal chops, a particular highlight being a fiery cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy For The Devil”, as well as a smooth segue from a Hendrix style jam into a strangely beautiful rendition of “Over the Rainbow” the film “Wizard Of Oz”, showing Chubby is capable of more than just loud blues rock. The rest of his band are tight and on fine form, playing well but never upstaging Chubby who is the unquestionable focal point of the evening. If you’re a fan of the blues, Popa Chubby is definitely one to check out.

First time seeing Poppa Chubby though I've been listening to his music for several years. The setting couldn't have been better at Mexicali Live. Tables for dinner across the floor gave a feeling of relaxed intimacy. Popa was there with keyboard player, bassist and drummer. No warm up band necessary. Every song he played benefited from his live show improvisation (69 dollars which is 4 minutes on the album grooved on for 16 minutes with leads from all band members). He plays with so much feeling and you can tell he's totally enjoying himself. The band was tight when they needed to be and loose (as in relaxed) throughout. After the show, Popa hung out on stage while he packed up some of his equipment. He chatted with fans, signed autographs, and really just made himself available. So glad I went and to think this show was only $20 and parking was free...sweet!

Terrific set from Poppa Chubby and his three piece band. The tight rhythms laid down by the bass and drums allowed Poppa's guitar to soar way, way above. Upbeat and cheerful as the man is the quitar did the real talking. Mostly he performed his own compositions with dues paid to a range of blues greats. He also performed a superb version of Hendrix's (or should I say Billy Roberts) 'Hey Joe' - often covered but seldom as well as this - and the Stones 'Sympathy for the Devil'

Popa Chubby never disappoints. Popa tore the roof off of Daryl’s House last night. With Popa and his talented band you always feel the music he plays....he plays from the heart. Early Times, the DJ from Bluesville on SiriusXM radio was Popa’s special guest and together they were amazing. I highly recommend going to see this amazingly talented musician...you will not be disappointed

My first but certainly not last concert i hope. It was a blast. I have been to lots of diff concert, this one i will remember the most. Sound, light band and most of all Popa was just Great! Never seen the artists walking around and feeling good among the fans. Thank you so much Popa!

No artifice, only rock and blues, must to see

Great show phenomenal blues guitarist. Last time I saw him was 2007 in Patchogue long island at the great south bay music festival. I drove an hour and 10 minutes to see him yesterday. Ted Horowitz

It's amazing what he can do with a guitar. I can only decipher that he did not take the deal as to why he's not a superstar.

Twelve new tracks featuring The Chubbfatha on many instruments and doing all the mixing and record – ing duties. “This record definitely reflects happier times and good solid dose of classic blues!”, says Popa from his studio full of guitars in the Hudson Valley. “I specifically included covers like Hoochie Coochie Man and Dust My Broom to show respect for the Fathers. Willie Dixon has always been my idol, you know.”

But the real gems here come in Popa’s original compo – sitions. “Equal Opportunity” is a light hearted sing along that celebrates the feminine at a time when it is serious – ly needed. And songs like “Fly Away” and both versions French and English of “Why You Wanna Make War?” Are big standouts! There is more than an ample amount of pure guitar bliss on this record and slide guitar on tracks like “Tonight I’m Gonna Be the Man” add flavor to a savory mix!

Popa Chubby, mit bürgerlichem Namen Ted Horowitz, ist ein waschechter Sohn des Big Apple. Er wurde 1960 in der Bronx geboren und wuchs in einer Gegend auf, die durch Robert De Niro’s berühmten Film `A Bronx Tale` bekannt wurde. In seiner Kindheit hörte er die frühen Sechziger Soul- und R&B-Hits auf der Juke Box, welche einen tiefen Eindruck bei ihm hinterließen. Bis zum heutigen Tag spiegeln sich die musikalischen Einflüsse von Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin und Marvin Gaye in Popa’s Musik wider.

Im Alter von 16 Jahren nahm er seine erste Gitarre in die Hand und legte sie nicht wieder ab. Er spielte sich die Finger blutig beim Versuch die Blues-Licks nachzuahmen, die er aus zweiter Hand von den Rockern kannte, die sie zum Besten gaben. In den späten Siebzigern wurde Popa von der Punk-Rock-Legende Richard Hell für eine Welttournee engagiert. Während der Achtziger Jahre befasste sich Popa mit verschiedenen Musikstilen, was ihm die Grundlage bot als Berufsmusiker zu überleben. Chubby wurde für eine weitere Welttournee engagiert und gebeten seinen blueslastigen Gitarrensound für Pierce Turner’s Album The Sky and The Ground einfließen zu lassen. Popa arbeitete mit Pierce Ende der 80er Jahre zusammen.

1990 wurde die Popa Chubby Band gegründet. Der Name ergab sich bei einer improvisierten Jam-Session mit Bernie Worell, einem der Gründungsmitglieder der Psychedelic-Rock- und R&B-Gruppe Parliament-Funkadelic.

Popa Chubby’s Musik wurde durch die Einflüsse von New York City geformt. Sein innovativer Stil verbindet den Blues mit Rock, Rap und Soul. Mit seiner rasiermesserscharfen, beißenden Gitarre und seiner phänomenalen Fähigkeiten als Songwriter verbindet Popa Chubby künstlerisch die Wurzeln des Blues mit den modernen urbanen Elementen der heute angesagten Musik.

Ted Horowitz rockt seit über 25 Jahren den Blues als Popa Chubby und sein stürmisches, inbrünstiges Gitarrenspiel ist so kraftvoll wie eh und je. Am 27. Oktober erscheint mit „Two Dogs“ sein brandneues Studioalbum als CD Digipak, limitierte 12“ Vinyl sowie digital bei earMUSIC. „Two Dogs” ist ab sofort vorbestellbar und als ersten Vorgeschmack veröffentlicht Popa Chubby heute den Track „Dirty Old Blues“, der als digitaler Download und Stream erhältlich ist.

Popa Chubby ist ein Überlebenskünstler. Ein Kind der Straßen New Yorks, geprägt durch den kantigen urbanen Sound des Big Apple. Er definiert Independent und trotzt jeglicher Einordnung in Genres. Er ist Sänger, Songwriter und Gitarren-Virtuose. Seinen innovativen musikalischen Stil beschreibt er selbst als eine Mischung aus „the Stooges meets Buddy Guy, Motörhead meets Muddy Waters, and Jimi Hendrix meets Robert Johnson“.

Als gebürtiger New Yorker fanden Popa Chubby’s erste Gigs als Gitarrist in der New Yorker Punkszene statt. Der japanische Performance-/Special Effects-Künstler Mad George engagierte ihn für einen Gig im New Yorker Kult-Punk-Club „CBGB“. Dort traf er auf Richard Hell, der zu der Zeit an einer Neubesetzung seiner Band The Voidoids arbeitete, und kurz darauf Popa Chubby mit auf Welt-Tournee nahm.

Der Blues war und ist bis heute allerdings die Basis für seinen musikalischen Stil: „Since I’d grown up on Hendrix, Cream and Led Zeppelin, when I started playing blues in New York clubs I understood that the blues should be dangerous, too. It wasn’t just from playing in punk bands. Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters were dangerous men. They’d cut or shoot you if they thought it was necessary, and Little Walter packed a gun and wouldn’t hesitate to use it. That danger is a real part of the Blues and I keep it alive in my music.”

Im Laufe seiner Karriere ging es ihm immer darum weiter zu kommen, seinen Platz im Musik-Business zu finden, Möglichkeiten zu ergreifen, die seine kreative Kraft wachsen und gedeihen lassen. Seine Live-Shows sind von jeher ganz besondere Events und eine stetig wachsende und engagierte Fan-Base gibt ihm recht.

Sein neues Album “Two Dogs” ist vielleicht sein persönlichstes: “People ask me why 2 dogs? It’s an old fable – 2 dogs, 2 wolves”, sagt Popa Chubby. “We have become polarized as a race. There is a battle inside each of us. Each day we rise and must choose our path calling upon each other and our own spirits for strength and courage. The dog we feed is the one that rules the dog we starve dies of neglect. It is up to each of us to use our spirit to feed the dog that will enable all of us to thrive. I believe in the triumph of the human spirit, I believe that a grain of hope is more powerful than a mountain of fear. And I believe I love. We are here to love. Love each other, love the gift that is this life, and love music. So my dear friends, I make this offering to you with love, hope and the awareness that the dog I feed is the one that will help me to bring all the love in my soul to you.”

Vom Funk/Blues-Rock-inspirierten „Going Downtown“ bis zum Resonatorgitarren-getönten klassischen Blues „C’mon In My Kitchen“ mäandert das Album mit den Strömungen der musikalischen Meisterhaftigkeit des Königs der Flüsse, dem Catfish (Wels). The good, the bad and the chubby cd.

New York spuckt ja so manchen Freak aus und Popa Chubby alias Ted Horowitz ist bestimmt so einer. Anstatt sich mit halbautomatischen Waffen und Frauen zu beschäftigen, spielte er lieber mit seiner Gitarre. "Der Blues hätte ihn gerettet!", zitiert ihn dann auch brav das Info. Nun, ob das wirklich nötig gewesen wäre lass ich den jetzt mal so im Raum stehen. Gott freut sich doch über jede gerettete Seele... Wirklich inspirierend und innovativ ist seine Art von Blues-ROCK nicht. Ein paar abgegriffene Akkorde vom grossen Vorbild Hendrix und Carlos Santana's Culture-Clash schaut auch mal um die Ecke. Trotz einer wirklich phatten Produktion macht sich nach 'ner Viertelstunde die gepflegte Langeweile auf hohem Niveau breit.

Peace, love & respect CD

Ich möchte nicht dabei sein, wenn diese Dampfwalze losrollt. Ted Horowitz aka POPA CHUBY kommt aus der Bronx und ist auch nicht gerade das, was man als ein Fliegengewicht bezeichnen würde - und er ist böse .Nein, er ist mächtig böse, und das zu Recht, denn, was sich die amerikanische Regierung zur Zeit so erlaubt, ist alles andere als akzeptabel. Allen Kriegstreibern und -gewinnlern tritt er kräftig in den Arsch. Straighter, elektrifizierter Blues ist dabei seine Waffe und die dazugehörige Munition sind seine zynischen und verächtlichen Texte. Mit dieser Wut im Bauch rockt er wie noch nie und die ganzen Punkers können sich locker dahinter verstecken. Ich will verdammt dafür sein, dass ich ihn bisher eher belächelt habe .Für diese klare Ansage gibt es mehr als nur 'ne hohe Punktzahl: Respekt! (60:15) (08/10)

Ich hab mich jetzt durch das Live-Konzert gezapt und auch durch das Bonusmaterial war ich schneller als gedacht. Die Clips sind echt billig, das gnadenlos ehrlich und direkt vorweg. Es ist mir überhaupt aufgefallen, dass ich mir auch bei Filmen immer häufiger diese Art von "Resteverwertung" erspare. Versteht mich bitte nicht falsch, wenn man Fan von jemanden ist, ist das alles sicher sehr interessant, aber ich habe mich schon in der Videozeit gefragt: Warum schaut sich jemand zu Hause ein komplettes Livekonzert an? Live-Platten sind ja noch okay, dazu kann man seine Gedanken schweifen lassen, die magische Atmosphäre "erfühlen" und mitrocken, aber bei Bildern, wird man doch nur zum inaktiven Zuschauer, zum blöden Konsumenten... Außerhalb jeder Diskussion steht hier die spielerische und musikalische Qualität von Popa Chubby, dem äußerst gewichtigen Blues-Giganten. Roots und Rock perfekt vereint und mit einer Durchschlagskraft und Energie präsentiert die ihres Gleichen sucht. Sehr unnütz auch sein Monolog, was für Verstärker er wann und wie benutzt, aber bestimmt ganz wichtig für die Gitarrenfreaks und aufmerksamen Leser einschlägiger Fachzeitschriften. Wenn ich verwackelte Bilder sehen will, dann schaue ich mir unsere Urlaubsfilme an und garantiert kein "Making of..." oder Backstage-Berichte. Aber heutzutage braucht wohl jeder eine DVD und dafür ist diese hier sehr gut und professionell auf das Zielpublikum zugeschnitten.

Stealing The Devil's Guitar CD

Dass dieser Mann Gitarre spielen kann, steht wohl außer Frage, und auch seine Aussage, dass Gitarren zum Spielen da sind und nicht in Sammlungen verstauben sollen, unterschreibe ich. Sehr schön in diesen Zusammenhang auch die Auflistung aller benutzten Gitarren auf diesem Album und wenn man sieht, wie er seine Gitarren behandelt, ist das ein richtig fies grinsender Volltreffer in den Unterleib zarter Sammlerseelen. Von 1904? Lass mal hören ... Aber, wo wir schon mal beim Cover sind, diese Fülle von Menschen mit schlechten Tattoos ist absolut nicht fotogen und gehört einfach nicht so in Pose gesetzt und vervielfältigt. Auch das Design ist, wenn man jetzt nicht zu sehr ausfallend werden will, noch beschissener als sonst. Ein fetter Digipak voller Verschwendung. Okay, genug genörgelt. Die Musik ist einsame Elite! Ein Moloch aus Blues, straightem Rock mit viel Roll, Streetcore-Rap (Jawoll!), Country-Spuren und auch noch fetterem Funk, der sofort zündet und den perfekt pulsierenen Großstadtgroove hat. Der Mann weiß, wo er steht und warum er dabei so schwitzt. Alle Pappnasen da draußen, die angeblich hart rockende Retro-Punkbands abkulten, sollten sich lieber mal auf sowas authentisches einlassen. Das ist der aktuell beste, purste und absolut unverschnittenste Stoff im Block. Damit die Clowns in ihrer warmen Etagenwohnung auch wirklich mitbekommen, wo es lang geht und was hier an Klartext gesprochen wird, überlassen wir dem Meister selber das Schlusswort: "Yeah, wichser in Germany, that's what they say!" Dass Popa Chubby ein absolut brillantes, gitarrenschwingendes Schwergewicht ist, werde ich auch weiterhin behaupten, aber diesmal hat sich der N.Y.-City-Blues-Rocker eindeutig übernommen. Es gibt einfach Musik, die kann man auch mit aller Liebe, mit allem musikalischen Können und manischer Besessenheit nicht covern und dazu zählt eindeutig: Jimi Hendrix. Dieser Mann war einfach zu brillant und einzigartig, dass jeder Versuch, seine Musik zu interpretieren, bisher fehlschlug. Es fehlt einfach bei allen Versionen, die ich bisher gehört habe, immer diese unbeschreibliche Magie und der absolute Kontrollverlust, dem sich Hendrix bedingungslos hingab. Technisch gab und gibt es bestimmt viele Leute, die so ein Unterfangen mit Leichtigkeit meistern können, aber darum geht es bei Musik ja überhaupt nicht! Versteht mich jetzt bitte nicht falsch, die Songs sind alle sehr gut ausgearbeitet und fangen auf zwei Live-CDs und einer Studio-CD die musikalischen Fähigkeiten und leidenschaftliche Hingabe von Popa Chubby hervorragend ein. Da gibt es absolut nichts zu meckern! Die Fans können sich also weiter entspannen, gemütlich zurücklehnen und einfach nur die Musik genießen. (8)

We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
