A Christmas special service on the Bodmin & Wenford Steam Railway, Cornwall.

Steam and sparkle: 6 of the best Christmas railway journeys in the UK

From Santa Specials for excited children to a luxury Yuletide Evening Express for the grownups, these colourful trips will get you into the festive spirit

T here’s an affinity between trains and Christmas , but what precisely is the connection? Ghostliness comes into it – the mystique of a train in the wintry night. I think of the misty, hypnotic adaptation of Dickens’s story The Signalman, in 1976, part of the BBC’s A Ghost Story for Christmas strand; or the ghost story in the Christmas number of the Railway magazine (that publication’s only excursion into whimsicality is always worth reading).

Advertising from 1905.

Prof Paul Salveson, founder of the Community Rail movement, has written some excellent railway ghost stories, but he thinks the more profound connection is that “trains bring us home to our loved ones, and they have a sense of warmth and comfort that cars don’t have”. He recalls, from the 1960s, “lots of “Christmas extras” taking hundreds of people home, to and from Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool, often through snow-swept Pennine landscapes. Salveson finds an echo of that Christmas warmth in some stations today: for example, Paddington, with its Friday night brass band.

The trains themselves are not so warm as when they were literal fire carriers, and when trains feature on Christmas cards – which they often do – they are always steam-hauled. But in recent years, our many steam-oriented heritage railways have embraced Christmas with Dickensian relish, partly because those other child-friendly earners, Thomas the Tank Engine days, have become increasingly expensive to license.

There’s no copyright on Father Christmas (at the time of writing) and most heritage lines offer a Santa Special, while others have gone for licensed events not yet as familiar as Thomas Days, and which do vary from line to line. Professional performers are usually involved in the shows, most of which start later this month.

Here are six of the best lines for families.

Bodmin & Wenford Railway, Santa by Steam

Bodmin & Wenford Railway, Santa by Steam

The B&W has been doing Christmas specials “our own way” for decades. The trains run through the Glynn valley, characterised by a spokesperson as “steeply wooded, lots of trees, glimpses of white, rushing water”. Santa’s grotto will be on the train, in the former bedroom of a saloon carriage, built by the Great Western Railway in 1881 to take Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) to various racecourses and other West Country indulgences. Speaking of which, I can personally recommend the Cornish pasties dished up by the B&W. Running every weekend in December in the lead up to Christmas , and Thursday 21 and Friday 22 Dec, from £ 15.95 , bodminrailway.co.uk

East Lancashire Railway, Santa Specials

East Lancashire Railway’s Santa Spacial train, featuring a brass band.

The East Lancs is unusual in being a heritage railway based in a large town, its main station being in Bury. It’s also known for its progressive community outreach and the scale of its Christmas festivities. The gritty, part-Victorian, part-1950s Bolton Street station will become a Winter Wonderland, with a “choir” of mechanical polar bears, a “talking Christmas tree”, “red sleigh photo opportunities”, and Father Christmas supplemented by Mrs Claus and an Ice Princess. Nine trains a day over 13 days will serve an expected 40,000 visitors. They will run along the leafy Irwell valley, with Father Christmas handing out toys. Oh, and a brass band will also be on board. Santa Specials start on 25 Nov , from £ 23 , eastlancsrailway.org.uk

Caledonian Railway (Brechin), Polar Express

A still from the film Polar Express

Polar Express events are licensed entertainments based on the 2004 children’s film, extrapolated from Chris Van Allsburg’s picture book about a nocturnal train that takes a boy to the heart of Christmas. Characters from the film are portrayed, including the dancing chefs, and participants old and young are encouraged to wear their pyjamas (at least as outer garments). Of the railways offering this, the one nearest the actual pole is the Caledonian Railway (Brechin), which runs from a town of 7,000 people (Brechin) to a village of about 20 (Bridge of Dun), through agricultural scenes that have hardly changed since the line opened in 1848. Starting 18 Nov, from £28.95 plus booking fee, caledonianrailway.com

after newsletter promotion

Epping Ongar Railway, Lights Express

Epping Ongar Lights Express

“Light trains” are another standard attraction, albeit with local variations. Trains are draped in lights that change colour, illuminating the engine’s steam; there are also interior light shows, coordinated to music. This entertainment is likely to seem particularly surreal on the EO because of its coloured steam will be observable amid the trees of Epping Forest, which adjoins the line. Starting 25 Nov, from £20, eorailway.co.uk

Nene Valley Railway, Yuletide Evening Express

This train, operating only on 9 and 16 December between Wansford and Peterborough, is for age 12 and upwards, so the emphasis is on drinks (and nibbles), and the pedigree of the “luxury European coaches” involved. These include an Italian restaurant car of 1926 with marquetry panels in rich mahogany framing and fine brass luggage racks. There is also a Belgian coach from the 1930s, which played the part of a bar car in the 2010 TV film Murder on the Orient Express. The coaches are magnificent, but trainspotterish literalism obliges me to mention that there never was a bar car on the real Orient Express. (The NVR is also running Santa Specials .) Yuletide Express 9 and 16 Dec, table for two £90 , nvr.org.uk

North York Moors Railway, Santa Specials

Santa Special Train, Moorlander, steam train on a way from Pickering to Grosmont

The NYMR’s Santa Specials start from either Pickering or Grosmont stations. The former has the matt green trimmings of the inter-war LNER; the latter is in ivory and oriental blue, the strangely exotic colour scheme of BR North Eastern Region. Apparently, a strong rivalry has sprung up between the “station teams”, as to which can best supplement these historical themes with Christmas decorations. The line’s Santa Specials will feature the usual cast of characters and gift-giving, but landscape is what makes the NYMR special: lowering winter skies and the variegated shades of the moorland heather ensure that any photograph taken from (or of) its trains is a ready-made Christmas card. Starting 25 Nov , £ 30 , nymr.co.uk

Travelling by train to Stirling, we meet at the Stirling Highland Hotel, enjoying a welcome tea or coffee. Explore the handsome city or enjoy the hotel's leisure facilities ahead of dinner.

An early start this morning, as we depart Stirling for Glasgow. Here we change onto the West Highland Line. Catching the railway during the seasonally limited daylight hours, we skirt the shores of Gareloch, Loch Long and Loch Lomond, with scenery becoming ever more dramatic, before we climb high across the heather of Rannoch Moor, whose splendid isolation can only be experienced by train or on foot (no roads lead here). One of the world's greatest railway journeys then descends into Fort William, in the shadow of brooding Ben Nevis. On arrival a coach takes us the short distance to the Nevis Gondola cable car which whisks us high up Aonach Mor for incredible views. The Ben Nevis Distillery then awaits for a tour and a warming 'wee dram' before checking into the Alexandra Hotel for two nights.

Today we rejoin the West Highland Line for the final part of the epic journey to Mallaig. Trundling first past the Caledonian Canal's locks, we head through rocky mountain landscapes, crossing Glenfinnan Viaduct, where Bonnie Prince Charlie's monument and Loch Shiel are viewed before bursting out onto the Atlantic coastline of golden white sands with distant views of Rhum and Eigg. Enjoy time in Mallaig with views across the sea to Skye before returning to Fort William.

A truly stunning coach journey heads through untouched lochs and glens, past the romantic Eilean Donan Castle en route to Kyle of Lochalsh, overlooking Skye. Here we join the original 'Great Railway Journey of the World' made famous from Michael Palin's trailblazing programme - The Kyle Line. Leaving the western seascapes behind, our train climbs past lochs and forests, stopping briefly in small hamlets, before descending to Inverness, where we stay for a night at the Mercure Hotel in the city centre.

Christmas Eve Our morning train once again allows incredible daylight views of the Grampians which we cut through on the Cairngorm Line. Passing the ski resort of Aviemore and the charming town of Pitlochry, we arrive back in Stirling for included lunch at the Stirling Highland Hotel. In the afternoon we can walk to nearby Stirling Castle (entrance tickets included) or relax in the hotel, which will show a festive movie on the big screen with popcorn. Dinner is followed by live music this evening, we are treated to mulled wine and mince pies later in the evening as Christmas Day approaches.

Christmas Day After an action packed few days, unwind in the homely surroundings of the Stirling Highland, enjoy its leisure facilities and, above all, relax. At lunchtime, a sparkling wine reception precedes a sumptuous Christmas lunch with all the trimmings. The hotel organises a treasure hunt around Stirling in the afternoon or enjoy watching a festive movie. A light buffet ends the day with entertainment.

Boxing Day Our coach excursion takes us to the Royal Yacht Britannia, voted Scotland's best visitor attraction for the past 12 years. During our visit the famous floating royal residence will be proudly decorated in all its festive finery. The Royal Yacht served the Royal Family for over 44 years and travelled over one million nautical miles on 968 state visits, hosting world leaders such as Sir Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, Ronald Reagan and Rajiv Gandhi. Following our fascinating visit we enjoy free time in Edinburgh, Scotland's proud capital. Take in the glorious architecture of the Royal Mile, enjoy the Boxing Day sales on Princes Street or explore Edinburgh's Christmas Market*. Back in Stirling, dinner is followed by lively Scottish entertainment to round off our festive Christmas holiday.

We bid you farewell and 'haste ye back'. *Important Note: Edinburgh Christmas market dates are subject to change and cancellation and have not been confirmed for 2022 at the time of tour compilation. We do reserve the right to make substitutions and changes to the tour itinerary should it be deemed necessary for whatever reason.

Holiday trains are back, including the return of the Polar Express: Holiday Events Guide 2023

Posted: November 10, 2023 | Last updated: November 10, 2023

The beloved holiday trains of Oregon and southwest Washington are back for another year of seasonal joy on the region’s scenic railroads.

This year’s schedule brings back popular rides on the Mount Hood Scenic Railroad, Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad, as well as smaller events in places like Sumpter Valley and Yacolt. It also marks the return of the Polar Express ride in Clark County, which was cancelled in 2022 due to track maintenance.

Another change this year is the ticket prices to ride the holiday trains, which continue to get more expensive. Over the last five years, tickets have nearly doubled in price at some railroads, though others have largely remained the same. A family of four can now spend upwards of $276 for a ride on the more popular lines, or as little as $66 on smaller ones.

Last year, railroads attributed their price increases to a number of factors , including inflation, gas prices and the ballooning costs of operating the historic locomotives – all factors that are still at play this year.

For riders, the experience seems to still be worth the ticket price. Holiday train rides typically include some combination of music, food, activities and fun, alongside the scenic views and the general charm of riding on a train.

Here are the holiday trains running this year:

Polar Express

Based on the popular kids’ book and movie by the same name, the Polar Express Train is run by the Chehalis-Centralia Railroad in southwest Washington. The one-hour train ride includes several elements from the story, and includes gifts, singing chefs and treats.

Nov. 11-Dec. 23; $60 per person; buy tickets online at steamtrainride.com or call 360-748-9593.

Holiday Express

Run by the Oregon Rail Heritage Center, the Holiday Express train is decked out with lights, stationed at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center in southeast Portland. Passengers on the 45-minute ride along the Willamette River can purchase hot chocolate, coffee, tea, cider and cookies. Santa will also be aboard each train for photo ops.

Nov. 24-Dec. 17; $31 for adults, $25 for kids, $28 for seniors; $99 for a family of four; buy tickets online at orhf.org or call 503-233-1156.

Candy Cane Express

You can soak up the views of the stunning Oregon coast aboard the Candy Cane Express , run by the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad. The one-hour train ride runs from Garibaldi to Rockaway Beach and back, and includes hot chocolate and cookies. The train is decorated with lights for evening rides.

Nov. 24-Dec. 17; $40 for adults, $30 for kids; buy tickets online at oregoncoastscenic.org or call 503-842-7972.

Mount Hood Christmas Train

The Mt. Hood Railroad will again be running the Mount Hood Christmas Train, a festive experience that promises music and fun, wrapping up passengers in the Christmas spirit. The 90-minute train ride departs from the Mt. Hood Railroad depot in Hood River.

Nov. 24-Dec. 27; $64-$74 for adults, $54-$64 for kids; buy tickets online at mthoodrr.com or call 541-387-4000.

Chelatchie Christmas Train

The Chelatchie Prairie Railroad in north Clark County will host its Christmas Train rides , running along the Lewis River from the station in Yacolt, Washington. This year will include another ugly sweater contest, though riders will not have the option to purchase Christmas trees on the trip.

Nov. 25-Dec. 17; $22 for adults, $16 for kids; buy tickets online at tickets.bycx.org or call 360-686-3559.

Sumpter Valley Christmas Trains

The Sumpter Valley Railroad in eastern Oregon is once again hosting its one-weekend-only Christmas Trains , roundtrip excursions that allow visitors to see Santa at the Sumpter Station and go shopping at the Sumpter Christmas Bazaar. Free cocoa, coffee and tea are provided.

Dec. 8-9; $20-$27 for adults, $13 to $18 for kids; buy tickets online at sumptervalleyrailroad.org .
