Live In Japan

Outside of his time in The Beatles , George Harrison didn’t tour an enormous amount. But when he did, he made it count. At the end of 1969, for instance, George embarked on a short tour as a member of Delaney & Bonnie & Friends. For the Delaney & Bonnie tour, Harrison played with his friends Eric Clapton and Dave Mason, as well as Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle, and Jim Gordon, who would, with Eric, become Derek & The Dominos in the summer of 1970, while also helping George with his solo album All Things Must Pass .

The following year George played his Concert For Bangladesh , and in 1974 George toured North America on what was billed The Dark Horse Tour, which heralded the launch of his record label and album of the same name.

It would be another 17 years until George staged another tour. When he did, it was with a series of dates in Japan, during December 1991, with Eric Clapton and his band. This tour produced the album Live In Japan. Released on July 13, 1992, it’s truly an uplifting and joyous celebration of George’s career as a Beatle and his two decades as a solo artist. The concerts began with George’s third song from Revolver , “I Want To Tell You,” and the performance captured for the live album epitomizes what makes the record so good. The vocal harmonies, while echoing The Beatles, have a freshness about them and the musical interplay between George and Eric is as close as their friendship was.

The rest of the band is super-tight as well, with the rhythm section of Nathan East on bass and former Average White Band drummer, Steve Ferrone, superbly underpinning everything. For their part, keyboardists Greg Phillinganes and Chuck Leavell do much to create the multi-layered soundscapes that are so essential to George’s “signature sound” – to particularly beautiful effect on “Isn’t It A Pity.”

George Harrison - Cheer Down (Live)

Tackling The Beatles’ classics – even when they were his own songs – was no small task, and by the time the opening chords of “Something” come around, there is magic in the air. George’s vocal is heartfelt and the band’s take on what is, for some, the pinnacle of George’s songwriting, is exemplary.

Other highlights include a delicate version of “Here Comes The Sun” from Abbey Road , which is followed on by “My Sweet Lord”: a faithful recreation of George’s “gospel incantation with a Vedic chant.” Backing singers Tessa Niles and Katie Kissoon are to the fore here, and the song builds to its climax with George’s signature slide guitar, all of which brings an ecstatic reaction from the Japanese audience.

“While My Guitar Gently Weeps” is ranked among Rolling Stone magazine’s best 150 songs of all time, and the version on Live In Japan only serves to enhance the reputation of George’s opus. Originally written and recorded for The Beatles’ White Album , this version, like the original, includes one of Eric Clapton’s greatest ever solos. Then, like so many bands before and since, George and Eric close the show with their take on a Chuck Berry classic, “Roll Over Beethoven.” It, like the rest of the album, features former Amen Corner frontman Andy Fairweather Low on third guitar.

George Harrison - Devil's Radio (Live)

Upon the album’s release, Billboard described it as “a skin-tinglin’ romp, delicious and indispensable,” while another reviewer contended that this was “a remarkable live set, featuring Harrison… playing a repertoire that blends the best of his Beatles writing with his solo material.”

To which we would agree. For most of us, it was impossible to be there, but Live In Japan is a wonderfully uplifting document that combines the best of a greatest hits album with the immediacy and freshness of a live performance. Put it on now and marvel at two guitar heroes who both love what they do and take pleasure in sharing their music.

harrison japan tour

In December 1991, George Harrison and Eric Clapton played twelve concerts together in Japan. Incredibly this run of shows would make up Harrison’s last official tour (only giving a handful of live appearances following it) before his death in 2001.

As a member of The Beatles he toured extensively right up until 1966, however as a solo artist, despite releasing twelve studio albums over his career, he only toured on two occasions; a major tour of the U.S in 1974 and the aforementioned ’91 Japan tour.

In the clip below see his performance of “Cheer Down” from that tour, featuring an all-star band that includes; Eric Clapton and Andy Fairweather Low on guitars, plus Nathan East and Steve Ferrone providing bass and drums.

Live In Japan

Live In Japan was a double live album released in 1992, credited to George Harrison with Eric Clapton and Band.

It was Harrison’s second live collection, following 1971’s The Concert For Bangladesh , and the final new release during his lifetime.

The album was recorded in Osaka and Tokyo during Harrison’s December 1991 tour of Japan, backed by a band which included Eric Clapton. It contains a mix of Beatles and solo songs from throughout Harrison’s recording career.

The tour was Harrison’s first for 17 years, and his first dates in Japan since The Beatles’ final tour in 1966. He was persuaded to take part by Eric Clapton, who also sang a number of songs on the tour.

I don’t think he’s ever had the experience of playing for an audience with a great band. The Beatles played to 10-year-old kids who screamed their heads off. He’s stopped smoking, he’s got himself into fighting-fit shape, he’s got my lighting, my sound, my band. It’s a crack team.

Tickets for the tour dates, which were billed as “Rock Legends: George Harrison live with Eric Clapton and his band”, went on sale on Sunday 20 October 1991, with a handful of extra dates added to meet demand.

Rehearsals took place from 4-22 November at Bray Film Studios in Berkshire, England. On 12 November a film crew from Japan’s NHK TV visited the set to record a preview, which was shown on 24 November during the Subarasiji Nakamatati (Beautiful Comradeship) show.

It’ll be special for me, because it’ll be the tour which will decide whether I wanna do anymore touring or not, you see. This could be my first and last tour or it could just be something that begins a new period for me.

More interviews were recorded at Bray during November, which were included on a Sony Music TV Special, which was broadcast in Japan shortly before the tour began. Final rehearsals took place on 30 November at the Yokohama Arena.

The Story of George Harrison’s Last Tour

George Harrison wasn’t fond of touring, and he had good reasons.

He'd become weary of hordes of shrieking fans in the ’60s as a member of the Beatles . When he hit the road as a solo artist in 1974, Harrison’s U.S. tour was plagued by vocal issues, drug problems and a rock press that seemed more interested in his past as a Beatle than his present solo work.

So, whenever Harrison’s thoughts turned to doing another tour after 1974, he would quickly beg off any plans, foreseeing more frustration than joy in the practice. That is, until 1991, when longtime buddy Eric Clapton made it a little tougher for Harrison to say no. Clapton offered to tour with Harrison, while backed by Clapton’s live band, for a handful of dates in Japan.

“Eric suggested to me it … would be a good time if I wanted to do a concert tour because he was not working and him and his band were available to become my band,” Harrison said in a press conference . “And that was one reason why I thought about working was because Eric asked me.”

Watch George Harrison Perform 'Give Me Love' Live in Japan

Of course, it wasn’t the only reason. After some bad business dealings, Harrison could use the money from a tour. As a relatively compact nation, Japan offered significant profits with not a lot of travel between cities – certainly in comparison to a full-scale U.S. or European tour. It’s also been rumored that Harrison agreed to play with Clapton as a way of keeping his old friend occupied, given that the musician was still reeling from the death of his young son Conor, who had died after a tragic accident earlier in the year.

Although they shared the stage for these 12 Japan shows, the spotlight was squarely on Harrison, with Clapton taking a backseat as the tour’s musical director. Clapton had a heavy hand in the set list , choosing songs from Harrison’s Beatles years along with plenty of solo tunes – some of them quite recent. Harrison said that “I Want to Tell You” was selected (and opened each concert) because he had performed it with the Fab Four in Tokyo in 1965, and it provided a link to the past.

Wanting to avoid another 1974-style vocal blowout, and to make sure he we was ready for his first tour in 17 years, Harrison quit smoking in advance of the trek. As a result, he told the Chicago Tribune : “I feel better than I have in 20 years. I’m very straight. I don’t even drink.”

Harrison, Clapton and Clapton's band (featuring future Heartbreaker Steve Ferrone on drums and long-running Rolling Stones sideman Chuck Leavell on keyboards) played a warm-up gig for VIP guests in Tokyo before starting the tour on Dec. 1, 1991, in Yokohama.

“The first real show I had some nerves, but it was just the right balance of nerves and adrenaline,” Harrison said in 1992, “and it proved to be one of the best performances.”

Listen to George Harrison Perform 'I Want to Tell You' Live in Japan

They played a 25-song set on opening night, ranging from “Taxman,” “Something” and “Piggies” to “My Sweet Lord,” “Give Me Love” and “Got My Mind Set on You.” Clapton stepped to the mic for a short, mid-set run of his songs, including Cream ’s “Badge” (which originally featured Harrison). The pair relived another of their other famous collaborations with an encore of the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”

After the first couple of shows, the set got trimmed a bit (“Fish on the Sand” and “Love Comes to Everyone” were dispatched) but remained otherwise intact as Harrison, Clapton and the band played in Osaka, Nagoya, Hiroshima and Fukuoka, before finishing off the tour with three shows at the Tokyo Dome. Fan reaction was ecstatic for the concerts, as were most of the write-ups in the rock press.

“After three or four nights of doing the concerts, my ego was satisfied,” Harrison reflected. “I’m the kind of person who would love to play whenever I felt like, with a band, and it might as well be the Holiday Inn in Nebraska – somewhere where no one knows you and you’re in a band situation just playing music. The adulation or the superstardom is something I could leave out quite happily.”

Following the Japanese excursion, Harrison talked about embarking on a bigger U.S. tour, following in the footsteps of Paul McCartney ’s recent Beatles-centric mega-tours. He also talked about his reluctance to stay on the road for months at a time, however, and the plans never came to pass.

Fans around the world had to make do with a 1992 double-disc set of concert recordings from these dates, which preserved the full set while omitting the four Clapton-led songs. Harrison performed live on occasion in the ’90s, but he never toured again.

Live in Japan also ended up as the last new release in Harrison’s lifetime.

George Harrison returned to the stage for the first time in years in 1991; that Japanese tour is documented on the fine double-disc set Live in Japan. Backed by a stellar supporting band led by Eric Clapton, Harrison turns in surprisingly strong versions of his best solo material; it easily surpasses Paul McCartney's double-disc Tripping the Live Fantastic or Paul Is Live. Not bad for a guy who doesn't like to give concerts. © Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

Seventeen Schedule ‘Right Here’ World Tour for October 2024

By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

Seventeen are getting ready for their return to the road. The K-pop group has announced plans to launch the Right Here world tour in October 2024, making stops throughout Asia, including Japan and Korea, as well as the U.S.

The 13-member group previewed the tour in a teaser trailer, which concludes with the note: “Coming in October.” The complete tour schedule hasn’t been released yet, but the run will mark their first tour in North America since their Be the Sun tour in 2022.

While details about the tour are sparse at the moment, its name suggests that the band has a night full of hits in store. Earlier this year, Seventeen released 17 Is Right Here , a 21-track greatest hits record featuring highlights from throughout their discography and new material. The double-sided album includes popular releases “Maestro,” “Super,” “HOT,” “Rock With You,” and more.

“As for things we wish we could have done — North America, Europe, [seeing] the Carats there. We weren’t able to see even more Carats out there, but I’m looking forward to the opportunity in the future,” Seungkwan told Rolling Stone earlier this year.

“I don’t think I’ve looked back to evaluate how much I’ve grown with each tour, but as we do our performances while on stage, we end up noticing how much each member has improved,” Wonwoo shared. “As for special memories, we had a lot of time to eat good food all together. We got together in different countries, had good meals and spent quality time with each other. So that made it really enjoyable.”

SEVENTEEN singer/producer WOOZI recently responded to a British new feature’s claim that the K-pop group is using AI when recording its music. The singer who also co-writes many of the group’s songs, clarified that “all of SEVENTEEN’s music is written and composed by human creators,” though he said he has experimented with writing and composing lyrics with AI.

Continuity in Asia: Harris' policies likely to assuage concerns in Japan

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris speaks aboard the USS Howard destroyer at the Yokosuka Naval Base, in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, in September 2022.

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris will bring continuity to American foreign policy in Asia — including on support for the alliance with Japan and countering China — if the front-runner to replace President Joe Biden as the Democratic Party's nominee wins November’s presidential election.

She brings to the table nearly four years as a U.S. senator and more than three as vice president, during which she built ties with allied leaders in Asia and gained valuable experience on issues such as Beijing’s moves in the disputed South China Sea and Washington’s push for a united front with Tokyo and Seoul in response to North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs.

While the prospect of a return to the White House by her Republican rival Donald Trump has unnerved some in Asia after his at-times-chaotic stint in office, Harris’ last three years in the spotlight are expected to help assuage any concerns in Tokyo and other allied capitals after Biden’s sudden announcement.

“Observers in Japan rarely have this much information about the next president,” said Jennifer Lind, a professor at Dartmouth College and an expert on East Asian politics. “The U.S. will either elect Kamala Harris, who can be expected to continue in Biden’s foreign policy, or Donald Trump, who has already been president. Japan is already quite familiar with their different approaches.”

Japan, which employed a successful strategy to offset Trump’s worst diplomatic impulses during his presidency, has less to worry about if the former president is reelected. It has already boosted defense spending and made dramatic security policy shifts long urged by Washington, issues that could help placate Trump.

Harris, meanwhile, would represent a clear continuation of Biden’s policies in Asia — an approach that has taken the U.S.-Japan alliance, in particular, to what observers say is its highest point ever.

“Harris has stepped in for Biden and toured the region in the past and reiterated consistent messaging on Japan, China, the Korean Peninsula and Southeast Asia,” Chris Hughes, a professor of international politics and Japanese studies at the University of Warwick said, adding that she would likely prioritize good ties with allies and partners while also seeking to avoid overly antagonizing China.

“Tokyo will be less concerned about Harris’ policy positions, as these promise continuity with Biden, and more about her relatively limited experience ... in diplomatic affairs,” he said.

Harris attends the state funeral of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo in September 2022.

Beyond policy, Harris has also ingratiated herself with Japanese political heavyweights, representing the U.S. government at the funeral of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was assassinated in 2022. The move was seen as helping to build up her own personal ties to the country.

Harris has also touted the importance of alliances, a stark contrast with Trump, who is known to view them as tools for achieving his goals.

Japan had traditionally been seen as favoring Republican candidates, seeing them as tougher on security and defense issues, but Hughes said that Trump’s presidency challenged that view, creating an environment that welcomed Biden’s focus on alliances as partnerships rather than taking a transactional approach.

“If she were to win the White House and prove to be a strong leader, then Tokyo’s policymakers would probably breathe a sigh of relief,” he said.

But even if voters were to reelect Trump, Japan would still find itself in a position far more amenable to other U.S. allies.

“Japan knows that its leaders handled Trump very effectively last time,” Lind said, calling Tokyo the United States’ “most important ally” in its security competition with China.

As for continuity with Biden on his tough China policies — which expanded on the hard-line approach of Trump — Ian Chong, an associate professor and expert on international relations in the Indo-Pacific region at the National University of Singapore, said, "there is little indication that (a Harris) administration will diverge much from the Biden administration’s current direction of travel."

Harris is given a tour near the demarcation line at the Demilitarized Zone separating the two Koreas in Panmunjom, South Korea, in September 2022.

The vice president has largely repeated the Biden mantra on China policy, stressing the need to “maintain open lines of communication to responsibly manage the competition” between Washington and Beijing.

This policy “is about ensuring that we are protecting American interests, and that we are a leader in terms of the rules of the road, as opposed to following others' rules,” Harris said in an interview with CBS last September, days after her third visit to Asia as vice president for meetings with regional leaders.

But Harris has also demonstrated that she is able to confront what may be the most intractable issue between the two superpowers — Taiwan — with a deft touch that has often seemed to elude Biden.

Speaking from the deck of a U.S. Navy destroyer stationed in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, during a visit to Japan in 2022, she outlined the administration’s stance that China is "undermining key elements of the international rules-based order,” while noting that the U.S. would “continue to support Taiwan’s self-defense, consistent with our longstanding policy” of maintaining “unofficial” ties.

Biden has repeatedly said the U.S. would defend Taiwan if it were invaded by China, which claims the democratic island as a renegade province — remarks that appeared to buck decades of American policy and were later walked back by the White House.

In terms of building ties in the region, Chong noted that Harris has already met various Asian leaders, including Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, when he was vice president in 2022. Lai — who Beijing views as a dangerous separatist — was elected president in January and took office in May.

Harris would also be expected to surround herself with officials well-versed on Taiwan policy and lean heavily on their recommendations, according to Tsuneo Watanabe, a senior fellow at the Sasakawa Peace Foundation.

Harris shares a toast with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at a State Department luncheon in Washington in April.

Trump, on the other hand, has a reputation for ignoring key advisers, he added. During his time in office, the former president repeatedly sought “deals” with rival nations that often would appear to have benefited the U.S. at the expense of its allies and partners.

“Japanese security experts are concerned about the possibility of the United States and China growing too close (under a second Trump administration),” Watanabe said, noting what he said were unfounded fears that Trump could attempt to cut a deal with Chinese leader Xi Jinping over the fate of Taiwan.

A Harris administration would also inherit a Korean Peninsula policy that has boosted ties with Seoul and helped warm the once-frozen relationship between Japan and South Korea , while effectively leaving communication with nuclear-armed North Korea in limbo.

The vice president visited the Demilitarized Zone that separates the two Koreas in September 2022, reiterating the United States’ “ironclad” commitment to defending allied South Korea while working toward ”the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”

Harris would also diverge from Trump in that she would almost certainly not use the threat of withdrawing some of the 28,500 U.S. troops in South Korea as a bargaining chip to get Seoul to cough up more cash for its defense.

Harris meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as Trump did three times, would also be hard to imagine.

Instead, she would likely follow Biden’s trajectory, despite North Korea’s repeated missile launches. Though the issue of Moscow’s closer military relations with Pyongyang over Russia’s war in Ukraine — not to mention the possibility of a seventh North Korean nuclear test — could prompt an even harder-line U.S. policy toward the North. Harris has said Pyongyang has made a “huge mistake” by allegedly supplying Moscow with arms.

Ultimately, experts say U.S. allies and partners should worry less about “what ifs” and more about broader trends that could impact their relationships with Washington.

These trends include a shift in the global balance of power, from a world in which the U.S. dominates as the sole great power, to a bipolar world in which the United States must compete with another superpower, China.

“This creates a more dangerous world, and one in which the U.S. must rely more on its allies,” Dartmouth College's Lind said. “This is magnified by another trend: unsustainable levels of U.S. debt. This will make it increasingly untenable for a U.S. president — whoever it is — to continue subsidizing the defense spending of wealthy allies around the world.

“These trends will likely lead to a transformation of U.S. foreign policy in coming years — regardless of who is president.”
