I really enjoyed the Crash Kings concert. For a 3 piece band they generate some really electrifying music. They are all great musicians and their voices harmonize very well together. Nothing like a live performance to get the total impact of their talent. They do not put on aires, or dress funky. Just the 3 guys playing there music. Everyone enjoyed the lead guitars solo riffs because you could feel the passion in his playing.

Their music has a lot of energy and you just want to get up and dance. Mountain Man and Hot Fire brought the house down. They are a fun group to watch and would make an awesome warm up act for bigger names. I think if they got more exposure they might really go somewhere. Staging was simple but with the added colored lights going off gave it a more rock atmosphere.

One of my favorite moments was when they covered Hey Bulldog by the Beatles. I had never heard anyone cover that song before and it was great. Brought back many memories of the Beatles and really added a nostalgic element to their performance. I will be watching for them to tour again somewhere close to me. Excellent evening out!!

Mystifying Crash Kings returning to Reno

Listeners of Crash Kings’ first two albums might be dumfounded the first time they see the band live and discover there is no guitar player.

The Los Angeles-based Crash Kings, which will appear at the Cargo in the Whitney Peak Hotel in Reno on Jan. 31, are a trio with drummer Tom Roslak, bassist Mike Beliveau and keyboardist Tony Beliveau. The band also played at the Cargo in June and October 2014.

Beliveau plays a Hohner Clavinet, which has 60 guitar strings attached to a whammy bar used to simultaneously increase the tension of all of the strings without raising the pitch.

“It’s pretty dorky but it gets me that rock and roll sound,” said Beliveau, who says his late-1970’s model is one of just six know to exist. It was the creation of Buddy Castle, and the whammy, also called a tremolo, was nicknamed the “Castle bar.”

The traditional Hohner Clavinet has 60 strings controlled by the keyboard.

“The clavinet came out trying to emulate sound of a harpsichord but became much more electric,” Beliveau said. “It was used by Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Stevie Wonder’s ‘Superstition.’ It’s most traditionally used in funk and reggae, not as much rock and roll but every once in a while you hear it but not necessarily know what it was. The way I am using mine is just a different way to manipulate that instrument.”

R&B artist George Duke played a Hohner Clavinet with the Castle bar.

Beliveau said he has to tune each of the 60 strings before every show, but after seven years he has streamlined what must be an arduous process. He uses the wooden, 70-pound instrument, which gets its own airplane seat, for all of the Crash King shows.

“It allows me to have a big sound onstage without having so many people,” he said.

Boston natives, the Beliveau brothers learned piano at an early age. When a neighbor decided to unload his gear, Mike Beliveau purchased and electric bass and a vintage amplifier for $60. The brothers have played with various drummers until Roslak joined the Crash Kings before a summer 2012 tour with the Stone Temple Pilots.

The brothers studied at Berklee College of Music, before starting the Crash Kings. Its self-titled debut album was a inspired by Beatles music, and the follow-up, “Dark of Daylight,” has a Led Zeppelin feel.

The Crash Kings are hard rocking band with a unique sound.

“We’re having fun doing what we do,” Tony Beliveau said. “It’s fun doing something different.”

The Crash Kings are close to releasing an EP with five new songs, “Lives Nudes,” which also will include new versions of the songs “Saving Grace” and “So Many Ways.”

KINGS OF THRASH Feat. DAVID ELLEFSON And JEFF YOUNG: February/March 2023 U.S. Tour Announced

KINGS OF THRASH , the new band featuring former MEGADETH members David Ellefson (bass) and Jeff Young (guitar), has announced the first leg of a planned 2023 world tour, commencing February 16 in Joliet, Illinois. The "Thrashin' USA" trek will cross the Midwest, East Coast, and southeastern part of the USA through March 15. As with the band's 2022 warm-up shows, the group, which also includes drummer Fred Aching as well as guitarist/vocalist Chaz Leon , along with the occasional guest appearance by another former MEGADETH member, Chris Poland (guitar), will be performing MEGADETH 's classic albums "Killing Is My Business… And Business Is Good!" and "So Far, So Good… So What!" in their entirety. Support on all shows will come from HATRIOT . VIP packages will be available on all shows.

KINGS OF THRASH has also signed a worldwide deal with Cleopatra Records and will release a live CD/DVD package called "Best Of The West…Live At The Whisky A Go Go" on March 24. The 17-song set was recorded and filmed live at the legendary Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood, CA on October 15, 2022 and also features performances with Poland . The DVD was directed by Michael Sarna for Inmotion Entertainment .

Speaking to Ralph Rasmussen of Radio Bypass about KINGS OF THRASH 's recent shows and future plans, Ellefson said: "That was a thing where… Of course everybody knew our names — me, Jeff Young and Chris Poland . We advertised we were gonna play the 'Killing Is My Business' and 'So Far, So Good… So What!' records. And as it turns out, we ended up playing, like, half of 'Peace Sells' too. That's probably the most frickin' muscular setlist I've played since probably [ MEGADETH 's] 'Rude Awakening' [live album and DVD], when we filmed that in 2001 and I was 20 years younger. So we turned up the gas; there was no screwing around on that one. And it was great. It was super cool. It was super fun. It made me just realize how cool those songs are, how the detail and intricacies… It was a very different era, too. The songs were written under much different pretenses. There was a real innovation in those records, the stuff of the '80s, back then, that we were doing."

He continued: "We picked four cities. We said, 'Let's just go out and fire this off, kind of a proof of concept, show everybody what we've got.' I think the first night, when we played in San Diego, the fans right away got it. They were, like, 'Oh my God. Holy shit. We've been asking for this and wanting this for years. And oh my God. There they really are. Those are really the guys that played on those records. This is it.' And our drummer Fred and our singer Chaz , they got it in their hear as younger guys, so they get it and were excited to be there with us doing it. So, yeah, it really was just a moment in time for that to fire off like that so well. And now as a result, look, we've got live recordings, we've got more stuff coming up here in the New Year for that. So, yeah, that was just the beginning; that was just the first firework we blew off. There's definitely gonna be more after this."

In October, Young told Ghost Cult magazine that KINGS OF THRASH 's first original song was being recorded at a North Hollywood studio previously used by legendary producer Eddie Kramer ( Jimi Hendrix ). As for the musical direction of KINGS OF THRASH 's original material, Jeff said: "It's got the vibe of MEGADETH — it's on that playing field, but it's got all of its own stuff and all of our influences and some SOUNDGARDEN / TOOL vibes in maybe the music and melodies."

Jeff was also full of praise for Aching and Leon , saying: "We really feel in a way how Ozzy [ Osbourne ] must have felt introducing Randy Rhoads to the world with these young two guys we have, both half our age and both so composed and mature musically for their age. And we've just been having a blast. And it's great that they're fans of the music and they've really studied it. Chaz , the singer/guitar player, plays in a MEGADETH tribute and fronts a SOUNDGARDEN tribute. So he has some of that Chris Cornell huskiness… So it's really cool to hear him sing these songs with a bit more huskiness and that young exuberance that he has. I think the kids are gonna love him 'cause he has that Dimebag Darrell kind of likability."

In a separate interview with Thomas S. Orwat, Jr. of the Rock Interview Series , Young was asked if he, Ellefson and Poland have gotten any reaction to the tour — either in the form of a blessing or an angry rebuke — from MEGADETH leader Dave Mustaine . Jeff responded: "We're really not concerned. I don't pay attention. I haven't really paid attention or followed MEGADETH since, I think, I heard the 'Rust In Peace' album a couple of times, and then what you might hear on the radio or in the press.

"For us, this isn't about any spite or retaliation; it's a celebration of the music that we were all a part of, that we helped create," he explained. "And it's fun for us to do this.

"People said, 'You should do this.' And we said, 'Hey, yeah, you're right. We should do this.' It's a win-win — it's a win for us, and it's a win for [ Mustaine ], because any performance royalties, anything… If we did include live tracks, he would make money off that. It's promoting albums that hopefully fans will go back and buy, which is putting money right in his pocket. Especially 'Killing Is My Business' , I think a lot of people are gonna go back and wanna rediscover that album after this tour.

"For us, it's all about positivity," Young added. "We're all in this moment — we're living in the moment, and we're not looking beyond. We're not reading any of the comments on Blabbermouth or any of the stuff. Because we know what our intent is, and intent is everything. And our intent's positive. We like playing together. We know we're crafting original music. We're not relying on this; we don't need to ride the coattails of this. This is just something that the fans wanted, and you wanna give fans what they want."

Ellefson told Yes! You CAN Play Guitar! that the intention behind KINGS OF THRASH is not to stick it to his former bandmates. "This is a celebration, not a retaliation," he explained. "This is a good moment. This is a happy moment, to celebrate these songs and these tracks and these records. So we go at it with just fun… It's, like, 'Wow. Wouldn't it be fun if we went out and played these records?' And we're doing it. So it's meant to be this celebration and bringing people together. And honestly, that was kind of always my role in MEGADETH . Dave [ Mustaine ] always called me 'The Ambassador', and I was always that guy, and I am that guy. So it's, like, let me just continue that role in our community and have one of good will."

Ellefson was fired from MEGADETH more than a year and a half ago after sexually tinged messages and explicit video footage involving the bassist were posted on Twitter .

David was in MEGADETH from the band's inception in 1983 to 2002, and again from 2010 until his latest exit.

In 2004, Ellefson filed an $18.5-million lawsuit against Dave Mustaine , alleging the MEGADETH leader shortchanged him on profits and backed out of a deal to turn Megadeth Inc. over to him when the band broke up in 2002. The lawsuit was eventually dismissed and Ellefson rejoined MEGADETH in 2010.

Young 's entire career with MEGADETH was spent recording and touring in support of the band's 1988 platinum-selling album "So Far, So Good...So What!"

Jeff made headlines in December 2009 for accusing Mustaine of, among other things, "dissing, exaggerating and just plain lying on some level about nearly every talented musician that has passed through his dysfunctional little ensemble." He also disputed Mustaine 's claim in an interview that Young 's drug problem led to MEGADETH 's 1988 Australian tour being called off and the group being "banned" from performing in the country.

Poland was a member of MEGADETH from 1984 to 1987, during which time he performed on the band's classic albums "Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good!" and "Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?" He is also a featured soloist on the group's 2004 album, "The System Has Failed" .

Back in 2004, Poland and/or his management and attorney filed a lawsuit against Mustaine regarding the use of the three "Rust In Peace" demos on the album's reissue without Chris 's permission. Chris eventually settled for $9,500 and thereby ended a professional relationship with Dave and MEGADETH .

For the past couple of decades, Poland 's main musical focus has been the fusion band OHM: , which has released several full-length studio albums to date.

AMSTERDAM (AP) — Decked in the national orange color, dancing to music, and eating orange-glazed pastries, many in the Netherlands Saturday are marking King’s Day , celebrating the birthday of their monarch who is enjoying a very slight rise in popularity as per a national poll.

As King Willem-Alexander celebrated his 57th birthday with his family in the northeastern city of Emmen, people across the country engaged in the traditional “free markets” held on that day, selling second-hand toys, books and other items. Others toured through the historic canals of the capital, Amsterdam as orange smoke from flares held aloft one boat drifted over vessels of all shapes and sizes jostling for space on a busy canal.

“Celebrating your birthday with your own family is the most beautiful thing you can experience. I’m very happy everybody is back,” Willem-Alexander told Dutch broadcaster NOS during a walkabout in Emmen, 190 kilometers (120 miles) northeast of the Dutch capital.

An annual poll published by the NOS for King’s Day showed Willem-Alexander’s popularity edging up very slightly since last year to 6.6 out of 10. His Argentine-born wife, Queen Maxima, scored 7.1 out of 10 in the poll of 1,015 people, conducted earlier this month.

The royals’ popularity took a hit during the COVID-19 pandemic after Willem-Alexander and his family went on vacation in Greece during a partial lockdown. The royals cut short their break amid national uproar and Willem-Alexander took the unusual step of issuing a video message to express his regret and contrition for the trip.

The king’s three daughters, Amalia, Alexia and Ariane have all spent time out of the country recently — Ariane has been studying in Italy while Alexia has taken a gap year to travel. The eldest and heir to the Dutch throne, Amalia, also returned ahead of the king’s birthday after being forced to leave her student accommodation in Amsterdam and move to Madrid following threats from the criminal underworld.

Amalia, 20, who is studying politics, psychology, law and economics at Amsterdam University, told NOS she was “extremely grateful to everybody who made it possible” for her to live in Spain, where she said she was able to enjoy more freedom than in the Netherlands.

But, she added: “I’m glad to be back.”

Universal Studios tram tossed “multiple” riders to the ground, accident investigators say

A tram vehicle at Universal Studios Hollywood threw “multiple” riders to the ground after it struck a guardrail near props from the “Jurassic Park” film franchise in an accident that is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.

Details of the accident that took place Saturday night — amid the 60th anniversary of the attraction — remain sketchy, but the CHP said the agency has determined that drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash that injured 15 park visitors.

3:01 p.m. April 22, 2024 An earlier version of this article said 15 riders on the Universal Studios Hollywood tram attraction were thrown to the ground. The California Highway Patrol said “multiple” riders were thrown to the ground and that a total of 15 were injured.

The tram was driving through the storied Universal Studios back lot shortly after 9 p.m. when the crash occurred, according to authorities.

The linked tram cars passed by a set of props from the “Jurassic Park” film franchise when the tram driver turned onto Avenue M and for some unknown reason the last car in the procession collided with the metal guardrail on the right side, the CHP said. This caused the tram to “tilt and eject multiple passengers from the tram,” authorities said in a news release.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department received a call for service shortly after 9 p.m. for the crash and 15 passengers were transported to a hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department also responded to the scene but the CHP is the lead agency, a Universal Studios spokesperson said.

Firefighters and paramedics were on the scene and had assessed and treated 14 people, including bus riders and other vehicle passengers.

“Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor,” Universal Studios said in a statement.

The theme park is working closely with authorities as Universal Studios continues its “review of the incident and safety remains a top priority.”

The Studio Tour tram ride, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this week, will continue to operate with a modified route and the theme park will reinforce its “operational and safety protocols.”

The status of the injured passengers was unclear as of Monday.

In many ways, the tram ride came to define the theme park.

Over the years, countless riders have enjoyed close encounters with a robotic shark depicting the blood-thirsty animal in the movie “Jaws,” a terrifying stop outside the Bates Motel from the film classic “Psycho” and a harrowing escape from the clutches of King Kong.

Newer film franchises have joined the tour, including a stroll through a suburban neighborhood wasted by aliens from the 2005 film “War of the Worlds” to a western-themed sideshow from Jordan Peele’s 2022 movie “Nope.”

The tram tour got its start in 1964 when Universal Studios executives noticed that food sales at the studio commissary shot up after local tour buses were allowed past the studio gates to let fans get a glimpse of the back lot movie sets and props.

The first iteration of the attraction were the pink-and-white Glamour Trams, which carried about 38,200 riders in the first year. Passengers paid $2.50 for a two-and-a-half hour tour that included stops to see a stunt show and a movie makeup exhibition.

The most important theme park ride ever created? It may just be the Universal Studios tram tour, which dates to the silent film era. Once primarily a behind-the-scenes tour, the trek has evolved to define the modern theme park.

Later renamed the Universal Studios Studio Tour, the trams have since endured real life fires, labor strife, a series of expansions and at least one fatal accident.

The theme park launched a renovation project in 2022 to begin converting the diesel-hydraulic powered vehicles to run on electricity to reduce emissions. It is not clear if the tram that struck the guard rail was a newer electric vehicle or an older version.

This is not the first time an accident happened at the theme park. In 1986, a park employee was run over by the tram during a special Halloween “Fright Nights” show . Paul Rebalde, 20, was stationed on a parked tram filled with mannequins dressed to look like corpses, the Sheriff’s Department said at the time.

While in costume, Rebalde was to leap from among the mannequins on the parked tram and frighten people passing on moving trams, but was trapped between the third and fourth sections of one of the four-section moving trams and was run over and dragged to his death, according to authorities. The Halloween-themed attraction was paused for several years and later rebranded “Halloween Horror Nights.”

More recently, a stunt performer was hospitalized after performing in the “Waterworld” show in January 2023 . The performer was set on fire shortly before taking a leap off a tower in the show’s finale. The “Waterworld: A Live Sea War Spectacular” show is inspired by the 1995 Kevin Costner film and opened months after the movie’s debut.

He is a 14-1 longshot to win the Wurth 400, but the model projects him just outside the top five while making a run at the title. The 30-year-old is the defending NASCAR Cup Series champion and has finished in the top 10 in the final standings in each of the last seven seasons. Despite Blaney finishing 20th or worse in back-to-back races, he's still seventh in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series standings.

Blaney is one of six drivers with four top-five finishes over the first 10 races of the season with no driver recording five top-five results yet. Blaney finished third at NASCAR at Dover last year and has finished 12th or better in three of his last four runs at Dover Motor Speedway.
