Lolo at Trendell and Turner travel associates is amazing! We have used her for many years for various trips over the years and cannot recommend her enough. The accomodation that she booked for our trip was expertly planned with it being close to public transport, restaurants and activities.

It’s something most travellers have experienced – being in a foreign country and desperately needing help with travel plans.

More often than not, the first thing people will do is search the words “airline contact details” following issues with a bookings or change of holiday plans — but a travel expert has warned they’re the three words you should never Google.

Mark Trim, founder and managing director of travel agency, RoundAbout Travel, revealed to news.com.au that Google scams around airline contact details is the latest scam Aussie travellers are falling victim to as many embark on their European holidays.

“Third parties are now bidding on these keywords to appear at the top of search results and appearing to be airline contact centre staff,” he said.

“They are in fact masking that they work for the airline, accessing the booking details and overcharging for changes by thousands.”

He said in the last two weeks alone they’ve had three people conned into thinking their confirmed reservations were on a “waitlist” and need to pay to get uploaded when their booking was absolutely fine.

“These scammers can update Google maps listings or make up fake websites/businesses like ‘flightreservationscentre.com’,” he explained.

In an email provided to news.com.au, an Australian couple got scammed $US3585 — $A5320, before their bank intervened, reversing the charge.

The scammer, allegedly pretending to be from Lufthansa airline support, charged the customer for “new tickets”.

The scammer went as far as to say they received a dispute notification from their financial institution.

“If you filed this dispute in error, please contact your financial institution to cancel the dispute and send us a copy of the reversal letter. Alternatively, you can also contact me through my information below and I will help you resolve this dispute mutually (sic),” the email read.

He said most cases relate to a client at the airport having an issue at check-in and Googling the ‘airline’ to try and get assistance, which is where it ‘all goes wrong’. Picture: iStock

Mr Trim said the incident unfolded when the client got to the airport and had an issue at check-in with their infant’s surname different to its mothers surname (born since their original booking).

“They Googled the airline support number and got through to a scam service that was pretending to be the airline,” he said.

“The scammer was clever enough to take advantage of their stressful situation and glean key booking details from them and then let them know they would have to issue new tickets to get the whole booking corrected.”

According to Mr Trim, the scammer took the client’s credit card details and payment but they never got new tickets.

“[The email] shows the response from the scam company after the client disputed the charge on their credit card. You can see it had cost them $US3,585, but thankfully their bank intervened.”

Mr Trim said scammers use ‘flightdeskbook.com’ which is not a true URL.

“But per the disputed email shows they are masking emails from that website as if they are legit.”

“They rotate around different but similar domains (for sending emails) so they can’t get caught, as often there is no front end website active. They use a fake phone number and pretend to be an airline and then mask their emails to look legitimate to trap travellers.”

He said most examples relate to a client at the airport having an issue at check-in (late for check-in, no visa, passport expiry date issue) so they Google and call the ‘airline’ to try and get assistance.

“This is where it all goes wrong as they are not actually calling the airline but a scam number that looks right,” he warned.

“The scammer is then able to glean information from the client and use it back to them to say there are issues with their ticket or on a waitlist and they’ll need to pay extra to fix that.”

He said this generally happens through the masking of the airlines support phone number on Google.

Mr Trim recommends to instead go straight to a service counter at the airport, if your flights are delayed or cancelled.

However, if travellers have no option but to call the airline, “they should either get the number from the airport check in staff or go to the airlines website directly to find the support number (not Google to find a number)”.

“We have had three clients in the past couple of weeks being impacted by the same scam, but there have been more in the past few months which is a steady increase over the first few months of the year,” Mr Trim said.

It’s not something Aussies tend to think about when booking an overseas trip, but it’s costing them roughly $2000.

A common misunderstanding that can have huge consequences is putting Australian travellers at risk while overseas.

He was left semi-unconscious with severe injuries just hours after arriving in the major city.

M illions of visitors from North America, Europe, Asia, and other parts of the world flock to the land down under in search of their own adventures–whether its for the food, the amazing wildlife, the incredible views, or just the sheer size of the place, Australia is full of surprises! 

Whatever your reason for taking a trip to Australia, let’s talk about some of the things that will help you navigate your Australian experience as smoothly as possible.

Taking a Trip to Australia? What to Know

The seasons.

You might know this already, but since Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, its seasons are reversed from the Northern Hemisphere. However, it’s not quite as simple as that. There’s a difference from the country’s south versus the north.

The best time to travel to southern Australia (Sydney, for example) is November to April, but that’s different when you’re visiting the north (like the Top End or the Great Barrier Reef) where this time of year is humid and soggy season. 

The bottom line is check out the weather for exactly where you’ll be staying on your trip to Australia and know what weather conditions to expect.

The feeling of being in the middle of nowhere

The gaps between major cities are incredibly far in Australia. Not only are they farther in the United States or Europe, there are also typically far fewer towns between them.

Once you’re out of any major city, you’ll feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere. Rather than an hour or two between cities or towns, it could be several, so plan accordingly, and keep a full tank of gas and any emergency supplies you’ll need in case your car breaks down.

The amazing natural areas

Australia is known for it’s natural beauty and for plant and animal species that are found nowhere else in the world.

As these plants and animals have become threatened by extreme weather events and humans encroaching into their habitats, Australia has made the decision to set aside at least 30% of its land mass for conservation in a bid to protect them.

There are literally thousands of national parks and conservation reserves in the country, so no matter where you are in Australia, exploring the country’s incredible landscapes should be easy.

Electric outlets are not like ours

It might seem like a small thing, but as you’re packing for a trip to Australia, it’s something you’ll need to keep in mind. The country uses differently-shaped electric outlets. They’re not like the British ones, nor are they American or European either.

Australia has their own special electric plug sockets, so, if you’re taking any small appliances, like curling irons, etc., just remember to buy electric outlet converters before your vacation.

Kangaroos, koalas, and other animals unique to Australia

Australia is home to animals found nowhere else on earth, including the koala, kangaroo, wombat, platypus, echidna, and others.

You may spot them in the wild, but it’s more likely that you’ll need to venture out to a reserve or nature park away from the city to see them.

Of course, there’s always a chance to spot a kangaroo or koala in any area outside the city.

Tipping isn’t a common practice

Hospitality workers in Australia are paid a whole lot better than in the US and many other parts of the world, so workers don’t necessarily expect tips and don’t rely on them to make a decent living.

That said, tipping is, of course, appreciated. If your budget allows, you can tip up to 10% of the bill , especially when in a group setting where more items are ordered and extra service is required.

Beer connoisseur? Go local

If you’re heading out to a bar in Australia, it’s best to go local when it comes to your choice of beer. Australia has a ton of great local brands as well as micro-breweries that are definitely worth trying.

Mind the sun

You may know this already, but the sun is REALLY STRONG in Australia, so stock up on sunscreen, and respect the fact that you’ll probably get sunburned a lot quicker than you would back home. In fact, a sunburn can occur in as little as 15 minutes in the hot Aussie sun.

A high-SPF sunscreen, sun hat, and clothing and beach wear that protects your skin is your best bet if you plan to hit the beach—or spend any time outdoors. Don’t let a painful sunburn ruin your trip when it’s relatively easy to prevent.

The distances between every location

Many people make the mistake of trying to explore the entirety of Australia in a couple of weeks, not realizing that it’s a vast continent as well as a country.

Instead, it’s a better idea to choose two or three areas to travel extensively, and check them off your travel list. If you don’t, much of your visit will be spent traveling, not enjoying everything the country has to offer.  For example, did you know that it takes nine hours to drive from Sydney to Melbourne?

Driving in Australia 

Speaking of driving, Australians drive on the left side of the road, so if you’re coming from the United States, this is something you’ll have to get used to quickly.

Here are some other things to know about driving down under :

  • Australia uses the metric system of distances and speeds.
  • Australian cars are right-hand drive vehicles.
  • In Australia, you can drive with a foreign (English language) license for up to three months. 
  • Seat belts are required for all of a vehicle’s occupants, and these laws are strictly enforced. Children and babies must be restrained in an approved safety or booster seat, in some states up to seven years old.
  • The blood alcohol limit is .05% throughout Australia, with zero limits for learners and drivers with provisional licenses in some states.
  • In case of an accident involving injury or death, the police must be contacted, and the driver is legally required to render assistance. The penalties for leaving an accident scene can be severe. 
  • Speed limits are clearly posted. A default 50km/hour speed limit applies in urban areas with street lights in the rare event that there is no other signposted limit.
  • Speed cameras are used in all states and territories of Australia, with some states using hidden cameras. Point-to-point speed checks (over a certain distance) or aerial speed checks are also used in some places. There is no defined margin of tolerance for speeding. 
  • Rental vehicle companies may ask you to take a short road rules test focused towards tourist requirements.
  • Permits can be necessary to travel through aboriginal  communities and towns in certain remote areas. 
  • As mentioned, drivers need to be prepared and self-sufficient before travelling through remote areas. Even on major regional roads, service stations may not be open overnight, so plan ahead when it comes to getting fuel.
  • Many accidents occur at night due to the presence of native animals which become more active in the evenings, for this reason some car rental companies impose a curfew on driving after sunset in Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

Thailand expands visa-free travel for 93 countries, including Australia

Thailand has expanded its visa-free travel for Australians from 30 days to 60 days as part of a new tourism scheme.  

The visa can be extended up to 30 days more through the Thai immigration bureau. 

Ninety-three countries and territories are eligible for the new scheme, up from 57 previously. 

On Monday, Thailand also announced relaxed rules for several other visa categories.

The validity of "digital nomad" visas for self-employed, remote workers will increase to five years from 60 days, with each stay limited to 180 days.

The country will also allow visiting students, who earn a bachelor's degree or higher in Thailand, to stay for one year after graduation to find a job or travel.

The changes, which came into effect on Monday, are part of the South-East Asian nation's latest efforts to boost travel and tourism.

Tourism is a key driver of Thailand's economy and a big source of employment, but it has struggled since the pandemic. 

Thailand recorded 17.5 million foreign tourists in the first six months of 2024, the tourism ministry said, up 35 per cent from the same period a year earlier.

Foreign arrivals generated revenue of 825 billion baht ($34 billion), data showed.

In pre-pandemic 2019, Thailand welcomed a record 39.9 million arrivals, generating 1.91 trillion baht ($79 billion).

Kingsley Hopkins is. He's headed to Portugal and Iceland with his girlfriend, and he wants to make sure he's covered for things like medical emergencies or trip disruptions, "or if a volcano erupts," he said.

But getting the right travel insurance can be complicated. There's no one-size-fits-all policy, and Hopkins, an assistant editor at a book publishing company in New York, has been spending a lot of time thinking about how to protect his summer vacation.

Most surveys suggest this will be a record summer for travel. How much of a record? Demand is so high that some airlines are afraid they will run out of planes. Now that's busy.

At the same time, danger and uncertainty are lurking everywhere – wars in Europe and the Middle East, the usual slate of natural disasters like hurricanes and maybe a volcano or two. It's no wonder people are giving some serious thought to insurance. 

Older travelers are particularly worried. And they should be, said PK Rao, CEO of INF Visitor Care . Claims by travelers over age 50 spike during the summer months.

Warning: American tourists are being profiled. Don't be one of them.

"According to our claim data, medical emergencies tend to uptick during the summer, especially for those going on trips that involve outdoor activities," he said.

But there are so many choices out there, including credit card coverage, medical evacuation membership programs and stand-alone travel insurance. What should you get?

You need peace of mind 

But don't just reflexively start shopping for a travel insurance policy this summer. Instead, look for peace of mind – knowing that if something goes wrong, you'll be taken care of.

"Knowing you're protected from unforeseen travel mishaps – like delays, lost baggage and even medical emergencies – can make the trip that much more enjoyable,” said Daniel Durazo, a spokesman for Allianz Partners USA .

As it turns out, there are several ways to get the peace of mind you need. And there are times when you can safely skip travel insurance.

This is when you don't need insurance

Here's when you can skip travel insurance, according to experts:

◾ If you already have coverage. "You may already have travel coverage through your benefits at work, your credit card, or through group benefits with an organization," said Jiten Puri, CEO of PolicyAdvisor.com. If you do, there's no need to buy more coverage. You're all set.

◾ If you're not traveling far. If you're taking a driving vacation and staying in a place where lodging is free, like a relative's sofa, then there's not much to insure. "If you already have health insurance, it may cover you for a domestic trip, so you don't need to think about health insurance coverage," said Joe Cronin, CEO of International Citizens Insurance .

◾ If your trip isn't insurable. Traditional travel insurance covers conventional trips with prepaid, nonrefundable components like airline tickets and hotel stays. You might find that you either already have coverage through your medical insurance, or the trip is essentially uninsurable.

So think twice before saying "yes" to optional travel insurance that your online travel agency may offer you when you're booking a trip. You might not need it.

Here's when you need travel insurance

But most travelers should consider some kind of travel insurance coverage this summer. Here's when you need the extra coverage:

◾ If you have travel expenses that insurance would cover. "If you have many prepaid, nonrefundable expenses, it's best to take out travel insurance," said Lauren Gumport, a spokeswoman for Faye Travel Insurance ."This includes things like flights, hotel rooms, tickets and activities." The more conventional your vacation, the likelier travel insurance is to cover almost every aspect of your summer vacation.

◾ If you're leaving the country. "Your regular medical insurance might not extend coverage beyond your home borders," said John Rose, chief risk and security officer at ALTOUR . Also, many countries require travel insurance for entrance. They include Bermuda, Qatar, Sri Lanka, and some European countries.

◾ If you can't afford to lose your trip. "When considering travel insurance for your summer trip, evaluate whether you can afford to lose your vacation investment due to unforeseen circumstances like illness, weather disruptions, or emergencies," explained Robert Gallagher, president of the US Travel Insurance Association (USTIA). "Can you afford the financial risk if you miss your cruise departure because of covered flight delays? What if you have to cut your trip short because of illness?"  

One of the most common mistakes travelers make is assuming their credit card will cover them. For example, I found that my credit card only covered my rental car as secondary insurance, which made it completely useless when I rented a car in Tampa recently. I had to buy a standalone policy from Allianz to cover the vehicle.

How one traveler insured his summer vacation

So, how did Hopkins handle his travel insurance needs? Well, as I mentioned – it's complicated.

Hopkins said he always buys some travel insurance before he takes a trip, "but how much, and what I cover, varies," he explained.

He decided that his path to peace of mind in this case was to spend a few extra dollars: He made fully refundable flight and hotel reservations, just in case something went wrong. That would eliminate a lengthy claim with his travel insurance company or credit card.

But he still needed at least $50,000 in medical coverage with emergency evacuation because of his active schedule.

"We’re going to be doing a lot of hiking in Iceland," he said. "And you just never know." 

At the beginning of the year, he decided to buy an annual Medjet Horizon plan, a membership that would get him from a hospital in Portugal or Iceland to a hospital at home, in case something happened. 

For insurance, Hopkins checked TravelInsurance.com to find an affordable travel insurance policy. He found coverage through Trawick International that pays up to $50,000 in medical expenses and up to $200,000 for an evacuation.

"I’ve heard good things about them," he said. "Hopefully, we won’t need any of it."

How do I insure my trips?

I'm on the road about 360 days a year, so I'm always thinking about peace of mind. I currently use a Wells Fargo credit card with lots of travel benefits, and I have long-term policies through Faye and Cigna, which have worked fairly well. I also am a long-time Medjet Horizon member. If I rent a car, I turn to Allianz for my primary coverage.

I know – that's a lot of peace of mind. 

But I've also run into trouble and had to use many of those benefits. Medjet got me back home during the pandemic. Cigna covered me after a serious ski accident in Switzerland. My old Allianz policy took care of my medical expenses when I had to see a doctor in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a few years ago.

Like I always say, when it comes to having enough insurance, better safe than sorry.
