Entrusted Zach with my most precious resource, my granddaughters and they had a marvelous and safe trip. Couldn’t stop talking about the trip all through dinner!

TripAdvisor

Zach is not just a great host and guide, but he’s also an extraordinary captain. You can tell he’s got a ton of experience, both as a dyed-in-the-wool local and also as a professional boatsman. Read full testimonial .

Cameron French

If your traveling up to Alaska, it would be well worth your time to book a trip with Zack and muddy water adventures!! He was fun and very knowledgeable about the glaciers. His boat was great! You could either be out on the deck in the back or inside where you could look out big windows!

Kevin Hutchinson

We went on two tours with Captain Zach; the Stikine River and the Anan Wildlife Observatory tours. Both days were spectacularly guided and enhanced by years of local experience. Zach knows how to make you feel welcomed and attends to every one of your questions. We’d go again if we have the opportunity.

We went on the Stikine River trip as well as the Anan Creek Bear Observatory. Both were amazing. Even on a cloudy, rainy day, the majesty of the Stikine River and the Shakes Glacier did not disappoint. The observatory was busy with bear action; we saw about a dozen black bears and a mama brown bear and her two cubs. There was plenty of time to get all the photographs and videos we want. Read full testimonial .

Took several excursions in Wrangell with different companies but Muddy Waters was the best. Zach Taylor’s boat was more comfortable. I truly felt that every seat had a good view. Zach himself was very engaging, answering my questions about our destination, Anan Bear Observatory, as well as insights on growing up and choosing to remain in Wrangell. Read full testimonial .

We had two wonderful trips with Captain Zach Taylor, Stikine River and Anan Creek. Zach grew up on the waters in and around Wrangell and he loves to share his knowledge and stories. He is a competent boat captain, wonderful storyteller, excellent host, and knowledgeable guide. I look forward to bringing friends and family to Wrangell so they can experience Zach’s tours.

Robin Ashcraft

We had so much fun with them! Best guides and great boat. You won’t regret it!

Spent the entire morning with Brooke and Alaska Waters. It was right up our alley … Wrangell is in a beautiful part of this earth, and we were enthralled by both the place and the first class treatment by Alaska Waters. A great day!

I can see why the guides are so upbeat — just being around AnAn is uplifting. The owner LOVES bears — he relates to them from great childhood experiences. I feel so privileged to be able to spend the day there.

We did both the AnAn creek bear tour and the glacier tour with this team and they did a great job on both trips. Very professional and safety conscious. The staff are well trained. Highly recommended to all ages.

a close up of a ball

The boat ride is an hour each way. The scenery is beautiful. Saw a lot of bears. The staff was very friendly. Would recommend.

The guides are all business when it counts, otherwise nice, friendly, engaging and intent on us having a good time. Worth the money, since just the hour boat excursion would cost that much. And we saw bears for two + hours to boot!

Very professional, knowledgeable and helpful. We had a 1 Hr boat ride to Anan Wilderness preserve and plenty of time with the bears. There’s a water’s edge photo blind with timed 15 minute sessions, and lots of good viewing from the upper deck.

About Breakaway Adventures

We started Breakaway Adventures by offering fishing charters back in 1989. We started offering guided Anan Bear tours in the early 1990s and soon followed that with jet boat tours on the Stikine River. Soon we were offering tours to LeConte Glacier and by the mid-late 1990s included as an option going into Petersburg, Alaska, for an additional fee and time. We also offer many water taxi options ranging from trips between Wrangell and Petersburg, USFS Recreation Cabins or Skiff / Canoe / Kayak rentals with drop-offs. As you can see, we have had a long and great history of offering tours in Wrangell. Our wish is for you to have the best experience available and we are the company for you!

We had a great day out with Eric. Fantastic scenery, different stops to stretch our legs, great photo stops and a genial tour guide for the day. High recommend it to anyone wanting to visit the Stikine River. As a bonus we even made it to the hot tubs, which I guess is dependent on the height of the river on a given day.

We used their service to take us up river to a forest service cabin. They rented us a canoe, folding chairs, cooking gear, fishing gear. It made the stay at the cabin really memorable

Our guide James was very knowledgeable about the area. He provided us with a lot of information on the wildlife, glaciers and fishing on the river. He took the boat ashore in several places so we could check out the scenery and look for birds and wildlife prints. It was an excellent tour and well worth the money. The river was still frozen in areas, and I suggest dressing in layers for the excursion.

We went with this company to anan creek. It was me, my husband and our 17 month old. The owner took us out and he was super nice and very accommodating. He spoke very nicely to our kiddo and he seemed happy to have him around. It was a very small your so felt very special. We got to spend extra time out at anan and never felt rushed. The boat that he has is not the newest or fanciest but the personable experience is what we really liked! Thank you for one of our favorite things we did in our summer in Alaska.

My husband and I did both the Bears of Anan Experience and the LeConte Glacier tour last week; both exceeded our expectations. Spencer, who recently bought the company from the previous owner, piloted the boat on both tours. He was knowledgeable, friendly, and we felt we were in good hands. James was our guide at Anan (and came along with us to LeConte); he took great care in getting us from the boat landing to the viewing platform and, once we got there, was always available to answer questions, point things out to us, etc. If we ever visit Wrangell again, we will most definitely book another tour with Breakaway Adventures.

Eric and his crew couldn't have been better to work with. They provided water taxi service for us on a recent kayak trip and the trip couldn't have gone better from start to finish. They were excellent with pre-trip communication, responding to e-mails and phone calls within hours. They helped to get all the logistics of our trip sorted out before we arrived which allowed us to immediately depart on landing. Our shuttle driver even got us fresh king crab right off the boat to take to our cabin! All in all I couldn't recommend Breakaway highly enough for all your adventure needs in Wrangell.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

stikine river tours

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
