Agadir to air ben haddou kasbah to ouarzazate.

Welcome to Morocco! After breakfast, we will pick you up from the resort in Agadir at 8 AM and travel through the Atlas Mountains, passing through Taroudant and Taliouine.

We stop at Ait Benhaddou Kasbah, the highlight of the day. The Kasbah is now a protected UNESCO World Heritage site and is famous for being the location of film sets like Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and many more.

You can climb through the village to the top of the hill, where you will be rewarded with breathtaking views. It is in this ancient desert village that we will eat lunch.

From there, we drive to Ouarzazate, the Hollywood of Morocco, where you can visit a film studio, have dinner, and stay overnight at the hotel.

Beautiful view of the Atlas Mountains with a lush green valley of trees a the base.

Ouarzazate to Todra Gorge To Erg Chebbi

After breakfast at the hotel, we will leave Ouarzazate for the desert, passing through the Todra Gorge. The Gorge, a magnificent canyon in the High Atlas Mountains, is the highlight of the second day.

There will be time for a walk on the canyon floor with the spectacular cliffs surrounding you on either side.

As we make our way through the palm tree groves, we stop to visit an ancient underground system of irrigation called Kheterra. It was used many years ago to provide the local farmers with fresh water. While the water has dried up long ago, it is still possible to visit the tunnel systems.

We then pass by Erfoud. The area used to be underwater many millions of years ago. Thanks to that, many fossils can be found there.

Erg Chebbi, Morocco Sand Dunes

Erg Chebbi Sand Dunes

Our next stop will be Erg Chebbi sand dunes. Here, we will start the camel trek into the beautiful Erg Chebbi dunes. As the sun begins to set on the horizon, we will ride our camels through the desert for a magical evening at the desert.

As we settle into the camp and relax under millions of stars, our guides will prepare a fresh and delicious Berber dinner.

Erg Chebbi To Fes

Better get your camera ready this morning! We will watch the full Moroccan sun rise over the dunes for some of the most spectacular colors as the sun wakes the desert.

After breakfast, try sandboarding at our camp before our camels take us back to town. We then depart for Fes.

As we set off for Fes, we will pass by Ziz Valley (one of the largest oases in Africa) and the High Atlas Mountains.

We will eat lunch in Midelt, nestled between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains, and was originally a base for the active mining in the area. However, now it has been transformed into a thriving pastoral area surrounded by orchards.

After lunch, we will continue our trip, seeing the beautiful cedar forests in the Middle Atlas as we look out for the abundant Barbary Macaques as we drive through. We'll have the opportunity to meet with them in the forest, an experience you will remember forever. They like to travel in troops of 10 to 30 and are the only macaque species outside Asia. Indeed, they are the only primates found north of the Sahara!

FES TANNERY and cityscape

Little Switzerland

We pass by Ifrane, a charming town nicknamed 'Little Switzerland.' Although unusual in Morocco, the architecture of the Middle Atlas Mountains, being in the alpine style, gives this place the charm and magnetism of a European ski resort and is undoubtedly a popular destination for skiers.

Then, we are off to explore the magnificent city of Fes!

Our adventures begin with a visit to the highly decorated and exuberant golden Royal Palace Gate, the Jewish headquarters, and the first Mellah ever built in Morocco during the 16th century.

From there, we drive to visit the tiles cooperative to see and understand the craft behind Morocco's detailed and renowned architecture and then upwards to experience a fantastic panoramic view over Medina.

We ensure your visit encompasses all the sites of cultural and historical interest, including the Tanneries, Mulay Idriss mausoleum, and the famous Al Karaouine University, the oldest in the region.

Rissani Market

After breakfast, try sandboarding at our camp before we drive to Rissani Market. From the 8th to the 14th Century, it was a separate kingdom known as Sijilmassa. A rich market was established there, thanks to the prosperous caravan routes originating in Mali's capital, Tombouctou, that led to different Moroccan cities like Marrakech and Fes.

The market survives to this day. It is interesting because it is not a tourist souk but serves the people living there. 3 times a week (Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday), it grows to double its size due to the farmers and nomads meeting to sell their animals, vegetables, dates, and other produce. The tour also includes a stop at Mouly Ali Cherif Museum.

15 Best Things to Do in Agadir (Morocco)

Where the western ridge of the High Atlas Mountains drops to the Atlantic, Agadir is a port and beach resort with year-round sun.

Even in January, temperatures peak above 20°C, bringing in Europeans in search of warmth and sunshine.

Agadir is Morocco’s favourite getaway, and its long sandy bay is fringed by an endless promenade and continuous row of hotels and restaurants.

Always in sight along the beachfront is a 300-metre mountain capped with the vestiges of Agadir’s old citadel (Oufella). The resort is constantly developing, and new attractions, like a big wheel, swish marina and modern zoo for crocodiles, have popped up in Agadir in the last few years.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Agadir:

1. Souk El Had

Souk El Had, Agadir

Agadir’s central market is on a jaw-dropping scale, covering more than 13 hectares and employing 10,000 people, which makes it one of the largest in Morocco.

It was built like a fortress following the city’s destructive earthquake in 1960, and has been updated over the last couple of decades with a roof and new flooring.

Souk El Had is open every day except Monday, and its name comes from the Arabic word for Sunday (Ahad), harking back to when this was just a one-day market.

Come prepared to haggle, which can be an arduous process, and you can hunt for fresh produce, olives, spices, honey, dates, fabrics, leather goods, furniture, items carved from cedar, clay tagines, Moroccan teapots, argan oil and more than we could ever list here.

Souk El Had would be thriving even without tourists, as you’ll find out at the eye-opening livestock section where chickens are bought and slaughtered on the spot.

2. Agadir Beach

Agadir Beach

Agadir’s wide sandy beach unrolls into the distance from Agadir’s marina and is tracked for all five kilometres by a promenade (corniche). Being on the Atlantic, the water can be chilly and waves can be tall, and there’s a handful of surf schools for newbies.

For parents with littler children and inexperienced swimmers, Agadir Beach is shallow and the waves break a long way out, so there’s less danger of anyone running into difficulty.

This beach is one of the resort’s biggest selling points so is patrolled by police and cleaned regularly, but as the north end is close to the city’s fishing and commercial ports you may prefer to walk further south to swim.

3. Agadir Oufella

Agadir Oufella

The ruins of Agadir’s citadel or kasbah, dating back to 1572, are hoisted far above the ocean, up the sharp slopes of a 300-metre hill.

On the scrubby hill-side for all to see are the words “God, Country, King”, in Arabic and lit up and night.

At the top, not much save the restored outer walls is still standing, following a violent earthquake that razed the city in 1960. Many people continue to make the trip to the top by bus or on foot, and there are plenty of hawkers, snake charmers and vendors offering camel rides at the top.

The view all the way down to the Bay of Agadir from the foot of the walls is mesmerising.

4. Museum of Amazigh Culture

Museum of Amazigh Culture

At this small but well-presented municipal museum you’ll discover the Berber traditions and crafts of the surrounding Soussa-Massa region.

The Museum of Amazigh Culture is on Passage Aït Souss, a pedestrian street connecting to the arterial Avenue Mohammed V.

On show are Berber architectural elements, examples of woodcarving, boucherouite rugs, historic manuscripts and pottery.

Most exquisite is the silverwork of the bracelets, brooches and implausibly complex necklaces and earrings in the jewellery collection.

You’ll also get to see the tools used by these craftsmen, and there are always temporary exhibitions, often showing contemporary Berber crafts.

5. Corniche La Côte

Corniche La Côte, Agadir

This spotless paved promenade traces the beach for all five kilometres down as far as the Royal Palace at the mouth of the Souss River.

There’s life all the way along the Corniche La Côte, at an unending string of hotels, spas, nightclubs, restaurants, fast food chains, cafes, ice cream parlours and surf schools.

On the beach side, the promenade has sinuous wall bending in and out, a couple of metres above the beach.

You can pause beneath a palm tree to watch the sun going down, and look north to the faint cranes of the commercial port and the indomitable bulk of the Oufella and its Arabic inscription.

Things can get a little frenetic late in the day, which is prime time for leisurely family strolls.

6. Vallée des Oiseaux

Vallée Des Oiseaux, Agadir

Just in from the Corniche, on the narrow course of a dry riverbed, is a small botanical garden and animal attraction.

Free to enter, Vallée des Oiseaux is a useful alternative to the beach for families with younger children.

The headline here is the walk-through aviary and enclosures for parrots, ibises, flamingos, peacocks and all kinds of other bird species from as far away as Asia and South America.

Vallée des Oiseaux also keeps small herds of goats and Barbary sheep.

Planted along the walkway are banana trees, magnolias, bougainvillea and oleanders, and there’s a small ornamental waterfall to temper the fierce summer heat.

7. Crocoparc

Crocoparc, Agadir

This zoo, entirely for Nile crocodiles, opened in the outskirts of Agadir in 2015. Crocoparc keeps more than 300 of this species in water-rich habitats on a closed system of three basins fed from the top by a cascade.

You can observe the crocodiles safely from raised platforms and at close quarters through a unique glass box built into the ground in one of the enclosures.

Nile crocodiles are known to grow to more than five metres long, but have disappeared from Morocco since the 1960s.

In 2016 Crocoparc opened a laboratory and nursery, where you may get the chance to watch a baby crocodile hatching.

The attraction is also embedded in a four-hectare botanical garden, growing succulents, water lilies, cactuses, two ombú trees and a 50-year-old ficus among more than 300 species.

8. La Grande Roue d’Agadir

La Grande Roue d'Agadir

Walking the Corniche you’re sure to see this 50-metre Ferris wheel, which opened shortly after Crocoparc in 2015. La Grande Roue d’Agadir is billed as the first of its kind in Africa, with 27 gondolas, holding six people each.

This ride is computer controlled, and has wind sensors to keep the gondolas stable in the face of Atlantic gusts.

Typically the wheel makes five turns, giving you privileged vistas of the Oufella, the Medina, the marina and the Atlantic.

Naturally, the best time to ride is at sunset.

9. Agadir Marina

Agadir Marina

Another shiny new development, the marina is a luxurious buffer between the fishing port and beach, at the west end of the Corniche.

You’ll find palmed-lined quays and Moorish-style whitewashed apartment blocks around a rectangular harbour, shielded to the south from the Atlantic to by a long mole.

The whole ensemble is photo-worthy looking back towards the Oufella from the east side.

Brands like Lacoste, Zara, Stadivarius and MAC Cosmetics share the quaysides with cafes, ice cream parlours and an international assortment of restaurants, from Thai to Tacos.

10. Memoire d’Agadir

Memoire d'Agadir

The rate of change in Agadir has been dizzying, so this museum at the eastern edge of the Jardin d’Olhão will offer a little context about the city.

The exhibition drives home the complete devastation caused by the earthquake of 29 February 1960 that all but destroyed Agadir.

As many as 15,000 people were killed in the disaster, that left 35,000 homeless.

This was the deadliest and most destructive earthquake in the nation’s history.

On display are newspaper cuttings, details of the rescue operation, startling photos before and after the disaster and an account of the city’s reconstruction.

Afterwards you can take a reflective walk by the palms and cactuses in Jardin d’Olhão, named for Agadir’s twin city in Portugal.

11. Paradise Valley

Paradise Valley

In the High Atlas Mountains, some 20 kilometres north-east of Agadir, the Tamraght River zigzags through a layered rocky gorge as deep as 180 metres.

Here the river fills crystalline pools a remarkable shade of light green, contained by high stone ledges.

On a hot day it’s impossible to resist the temptation to leap into the glistening river.

Close to the car park, the river sustains palms and orange trees, and there’s a cafe serving freshly squeezed orange juice next to the pool here.

This is a visit best made in spring as the pools dry out by late summer.

Golf Tazegzout

Agadir’s status as Morocco’s golf capital is underscored by the Hassan II Golf Trophy and the Lalla Meryem Cup on the European Tour and the Ladies European Tour respectively.

These tournaments both take place at the extremely private Golf du Palais Royal.

The good news is that there are four public courses within ten kilometres of Agadir.

These are Golf de l’Ocean (27 holes), Golf Club les Dunes (9,9,9), Golf Club Le Soleil (18,9,9) and Royal Golf Club Agadir (9), while the marvellous oceanfront Golf Tazegzout (18) is about 20 minutes up the coast.

With picturesque views of the city and a remarkable history of its own, Agadir Oufella – historically known as Kasbah – is one of the most beautiful places to see in town.

The fortress was initially built in 1540 and updated in 1752; thanks to the 1960 earthquake, only part of the original building remains.

As you enjoy panoramic vistas of the town below, you can also learn more about Kasbah’s distinguished past as a stronghold for the city.

It’s often one of the first stops on city tours for these exact reasons, and a visit to this beautiful monument is one of the best things to do in Agadir if you want to understand the area’s rich history in greater depth.

34 – Surf, swim, and sun at some great beaches

best beaches in Agadir

There are, however, several great day trips to take from Agadir to see different sides of Morocco. Here are some of the best.

Paradise valley.

Located around 90 kilometres from Agadir, it’s a conveniently close destination to glimpse into the Morocco of old . The city served as the capital for a short period of time during the Saadian era. There’s a small leather tannery outside of the sand-coloured fortifications, and the city is known for its souks and crafts. Completely different to the golden beaches of Agadir, Legzira Beach is known for its stunning red rocks and natural stone archway. It previously had two glorious arches but, unfortunately, one collapsed. Once a popular hippie hangout, the thriving town now attracts a fair amount of tourists. In addition to the beaches, the old kasbah and souk are worth a visit.

Blondie in Morocco

The Essential Travel Guide to Agadir, Morocco

With an airport and 360 sunny days a year, Agadir has built its reputation as a  primary destination for tour holidaymakers. However, Agadir is not a typical representation of how you imagine Morocco.

Completely rebuilt after a devastating earthquake, Agadir became a modern city. With its modern buildings, European-style cafes, avenues and boulevards, Agadir looks more like a Mediterranean resort town. Or, as my American friend noticed, like a beach resort in California. As a result, Agadir can be a perfect first-time introduction to Morocco for those travellers who don’t like to travel independently but still want to feel some Moroccan vibes.

Book your 50-minute 1:1 video consultation call, and I will answer all your questions about Morocco, review your itinerary or create one together.

side trips from agadir

What I love about Agadir is the relaxing atmosphere. After a hectic life in Marrakech, sometimes I need to escape to a place where everything is white and clean.

Agadir Morocco – History

As mentioned, Agadir was newly built after the devastating earthquake in 1960. About a third of the city’s population (around 12,000 people) were killed; almost 80 per cent of the buildings were wrecked. The current town was rebuilt 2 km further south of the earthquake epicentre.

Hot to get to/out Agadir?

The bus station in Agadir is located 5 km from the beach; the local taxi will cost around 15 DH. Inside the 3 floors of the building, you will find many different bus companies selling tickets. I use modern Supratours or CTM companies; they are slightly more expensive but always come on time, busses are comfortable. After entering the bus station, you will probably encounter some guys selling tickets for other local companies’ busses. If you need to reach some smaller town or village, you might need to buy a ticket from them as the Supratour and CTM busses don’t go everywhere in Morocco.

How to reach Agadir from Marrakech? In Marrakech, there are several bus companies: Supratours (they have a website with the timetable and prices) is located next to the Marrakech train station. The ticket cost 110 Dh, including free wifi. Another bus company, CTM, is a 5 min walk from the Supratours. Bus tickets sold out fast, especially on weekends; you better buy one in advance. The scenery on the road to Agadir is breathtaking and the 4-hour bus trip (with a stop at a restaurant) will pass fast.

What to see in Agadir?

side trips from agadir

The beach in Agadir city is clean, with showers (outside) and guards. Many hotels have their own secured zones. However, the beach often crowded, so if you prefer a more authentic experience, try to get to the beaches outside Agadir city (my favourite ones are in the nearby Taghazout village).

Agadir Marina

Agadir’s Marina is the most modern between the beach and the commercial port. This small harbour has holiday apartments, cafes, restaurants and group boat trips, and well-known clothes shops and brands. Marina is a trendy place for a walk and reminds me so much of Europe.

Bird Valley

agadir zoo morocco animals

A few min walk from the beach, you will find a little walk-through zoo called Vallee des Oiseaux (‘Bird Valley’). The zoo as well as wallabies, monkeys, turtles, deer, goats, etc. Some conditions of animals are doubtful, but it is the right place for kids to explore nature.

Market Souk El Had

Souk El Had (Sunday market) is the biggest city souk (marketplace) in Morocco, with around 6,000 stores. This Souk contains everything from skincare to clothing, leather, rugs and spices. The whole Souk visit experience is extraordinarily colourful, and I would highly recommend visiting regardless of whether you plan on buying anything. You can visit the market yourself or book a city tour that includes a visit to this market ( contact m e to book the tour).

The Medina Coco Polizzi

As you already know, Agadir was utterly ruined in a devastating earthquake in 1960. As a result, the original medina (old town) of Agadir was lost; only small ruins of the old Kasbah remain on top of the hill overlooking the city. Therefore, many people get confused searching for the “Agadir Medina” and ending up at the Medina Coco Polizzi, as well called the “New Medina”.

Coco Polizzi, agadir, medina, building,

In 1992, the Italian architect Coco Polizzi reconstructed a Berber-style  medina  on a farm about five kilometres from  Agadir . It was built using traditional building techniques and local materials. Today, visitors can stroll the alleys and shop in the many small boutiques, all while taking in the colours, aromas and bustle of the market.

It’s a great place to relax walking around and chilling at the restaurant (the best couscous in Agadir). The restaurant is compact with a beautiful area for children to play in, a family of peacocks wandering around. There is not much to see, but still, a pleasant memory of how the Medina of Agadir looked like before. The entrance fee is 40 MAD; you can get to the Medina Coco Polizzi by taxi, bargaining the price.

Agadir Oufella Ruins or Agadir Kasbah

The old ruined Kasbah, also known as  Agadir  Oufella, is located on top of the  mountain  marked “ God , Country and King” writing  on the hillside. It’s rising 236 meters above sea level. You will notice these writing even from the beach of Agadir; they are also shining in the dar.

camel morocco kasbah view

The Kasbah of Agadir was built in 1540 by the Saadian Sultan Mohammed in the 16th century. In 1752 the Kasbah was restored by the Alawite Sultan Moulay Abdallah, but it was destroyed after the earthquake in 1960; only the ramparts were partially rebuilt. The Kasbah is located on the top of a mountain rising 236 meters above sea level.

Up the Kasbah, you will enjoy the breathtaking panorama of Agadir. The Kasbah is closed, but you can walk around. Be warned that vendors here want your money for a dromedary ride or a picture with their goat. There are plenty of vendors selling all kind of goods and camel rides (I must agree, it’s an annoying part of this experience). You can get up the Kasbah walking ( fairly steep walk and takes an hour and a half), or by taxi (around 100 DH both ways), or booking a private city tour ( contact me ).

What to see around Agadir?

For almost 5 years I have been working with a reliable travel company in Agadirether we offer traveller fantastic day trips. So contact me if you want to book a day tour in/outside Agadir, hire a driver or a car.

crocoparc agadir

Crocopark is located within the community of Drarga, on the outskirts of Agadir, along National Highway 8 (the Marrakech-Agadir motorway). You can reach CrocoPark by their own arranged transfer (fixed times, check on their website), taxi (around 300 DH), or book a private transfer ( contact me to book). The entrance cost 70 Dh, more information here .

National Park of Souss Massa

The National Park of Souss Massa is a hidden gem of Agadir surroundings. Located around 60 km from Agadir, it’s a 33,800-hectare national park created in 1991. This park aims to restore the Saharan Fauna in the South of Morocco; it shelters 250 Species of Birds, 30 Mammals, 35 amphibians and reptilAlthough, the. The park is vast, you can just rent a car and explore yourself, although I would highly recommend hiring a local guide that can help you to spot the rare species.

Agadir national park animals

I would recommend visiting the fenced and supervised Rokein Game Reserve (2,000 ha) managed by the  Souss Massa National Park. The reserve was created for the acclimatization of the Saharan Antelopes (mhorr Dama Gazelle, Dorcas Gazelle, Addax and Oryx) and the African ostrich (Struthio camelus), before their reintroduction into their original habitats in the deep south of Morocco. The Rokein Game Reserve is a pleasant few hours walk watching animals. The entrance is around 45 DH; there is a local guide who shortly explains about the park (in French or Darija) and leaves to walk alone. To find this pedestrian trail, follow the coordinates here (this place don’t have any official page yet).

Paradise Valley

Paradise valley, agadir, Morocco, palm trees

The P aradise Valley  is located 58 km from  Agadir   (towards Taghazout village) and is the most popular day trip. Paradise Valley is a small oasis surrounded by the High Atlas mountains and filled with natural pools, palm trees; perfect for relaxing, sunbathing, free fish spa and lunch at the river restaurants and cliff jumping. You can reach Paradise Valley with a rented car, taxi or with a tour ( contact me ). Recently, Paradise Valley became a popular spot, so if you want to avoid crowds, don’t go there on the weekend or in the morning (tours are leaving around 1 pm).

Cascade Imouzzer (waterfall)

side trips from agadir

If you visit Paradise Valley and have time to explore further, continue up the road to the Cascade (waterfall) Imouzzer. Imouzzer is a small Berber town located around 30 min drive from Paradise Valley, passing a beautiful mountain road. Before going there,  make sure there is enough water  for the Cascade to be visible and don’t expect something like the famous Ouzoud  waterfall  that is  110 -meter high.

Imouzzer waterfall is small, and my favourite part was the clear pool down and above the hill. Indeed, don’t forget to climb up the mountain to see the waterfall from above.

Taghazout is a small fishing village 19 km north of Agadir. Taghazout and its neighbour Tamraght are popular places for surfing activities , every year attracting many surfers. Taghazout and its surroundings attract a lot of tourists looking for calm and tranquillity, an escape from the crowded Agadir.

beach, taghazout, water, village

In the last couple of years, Taghazout became a trendy destination for young travellers, a bunch of hipster vibes hostels, boutiques hotels and restaurants were opened. If you stay in Agadir, definitely visit Taghazout for great and cheap fish, calm beaches and more authentic than Agadir vibes. From Agadir, you can reach Taghazout by hired car, local bus (7DH), private or shared taxi (15 DH). Or, book a private drive trip to discover Paradise valley, Taghazout and its surroundings in one day.

Sand dunes of Taboga

A little piece of Sahara by the ocean, Taboga dunes are located around a 1-hour drive north of Agadir, taking the beautiful coastline road to Essaouira (15 km to Imsouane from Agadir’s side). It’s an impressive place where the ocean meets the rocks and the vast dunes, making a fantastic panoramic view. You will see the sign on the road, turn there and park your car for a breathtaking walk in the dunes, or surf the dunes, enjoy the sunset. You will find the GPS location  here . This place is located in Region Souss Massa protected area 900 ha, and is called “The Site of Biological and Ecological Interest of Tamri”, you will be a welcome board on the turn.

p.s. Taboga dunes are very famous for sandboarding, if you don’t have a rented car or sandboard,  contact me , and I will arrange this experience with my trustful partners from Agadir.

Of course Agadir is worth a visit, Agadir used to be the number one tourist attraction in Morocco in the 90s, but it couldn’t keep up with Marrakech and other cities in recent years. Where is Agadir Morocco?

Agadir is a modern coastal city in the southern part of Morocco. It’s located just north of the point where the Souss River flows into the ocean.

The city is 509 km south of Casablanca, 175 km from Essaouira , and 258 km from Marrakech . The majority of its inhabitants speak the Amazigh language, one of the two official languages of Morocco.

A few tips and recommendations before visiting Agadir

Before visiting Agadir, I would suggest learning a few words of French or Moroccan Arabic . Most shop owners and taxi drivers in Agadir only speak these two languages while the younger generation is starting to learn English.

Learning a few words of Moroccan Arabic will help you during your visit.

I highly recommend getting your hands on the Lonely Planet Moroccan Arabic Phrasebook .

It is packed with all the essential words and phrases you will need on your trip to Morocco and will help you in every situation — from finding a hotel room to ordering tajine or joining the local festivities this book will cover almost every situation you could imagine.

I would also recommend getting a map software on your phone that works offline. Google Maps and maps.me have helped us navigate the streets of Agadir and many other Moroccan cities.

One of the cool features of these map apps is that they can be used both online and offline. Connect to the wifi at your hostel and download a map of the part of Agadir you wish to explore.

These maps work with the GPS chip in your phone so they will continue working, even when you’re offline.

And finally, I highly recommend getting a Lifestraw Water Filter Bottle . Although the tap water in Agadir is not dangerous, it may contain many new bacteria that your body just isn’t used to.

If you drink water using this bottle, any dirt, bacteria or parasites gets trapped in its filter, while the clean water passes through.

The distance between the airport of Agadir (Agadir Al Massira Airport) to the city kilometer is just 25 km. You can get from the airport to the city center by bus, shared taxi, or a rental car .

Renting a car at Agadir airport

You’ll find a few agencies renting cars directly in the airport parking lot. The airport is about 25 km outside of Agadir city center.

There are plenty of taxis at the airport that can bring you directly to the city center. They have a fixed price of 200 MAD.

How to get from Agadir airport to Agadir by bus

You can also get from the airport to the city center by bus. Bus number 22 goes from the airport to Inezgane, a small suburb of Agadir. From there you can catch bus 20, 24 or 28 to reach the city center of Agadir.

The last bus from the airport leaves at 20:30.

Is Agadir safe?

Morocco is generally considered a safe destination and Agadir is one of the safest and most modern cities in the Kingdom.

In Agadir, you’ll notice police walking throughout the touristic areas and around the Royal Palaces. There is also a special touristic police unit wearing civilian clothes who work to keep you safe. You’ll see plenty of families and children in the streets of Agadir.

safety in Agadir - Is Agadir Morocco safe?

Petty crime is not a major concern in Agadir but it still occurs. It’s important to be aware at all times and keep your eyes on your belongings. Don’t carry around large amounts of money, and avoid wearing expensive jewelry. It’s always better to keep a low profile.

The best solution to avoid being pick-pocketed is to stay aware of your belongings and surroundings at all times. You should leave all your important items at your hotel and walk around only with what you need.

I suggest always keeping your wallet in your front pocket or carrying a money belt . Another great option is to travel with a slash-resistant and lockable anti-theft bag . I would also recommend getting good travel insurance that covers theft .

9 best things to do in Agadir Morocco

If you’re looking for a list of the best activities to do in Agadir, look no further! Here are 10 fun things to do while in Agadir:

1. Spend the day surfing in Agadir

If you’re looking for things that you should absolutely do in Agadir, surfing should be at the top of your list.

Agadir is a great destination for surfers of all levels. There are some great beaches near the city and they’re all easily accessed by public transport.

Some of my favorite surfing beaches near Agadir are Tamraght and Aourir . These towns are perfect for new surfers that want to surf smaller waves.

wearing a wet suit in Morocco

I would suggest that less experienced surfers try the waves in the area known as banana beach. It’s a long right-hand point break that curves in the shape of a banana.

You can rent a car and drive along the beautiful coastline to get there from Agadir, catch a taxi (about 800-1200 MAD from Agadir), or ride the Souk to Surf shuttle bus .

The Souk to shuttle bus runs to Tamraght from Agadir on a daily basis. It costs around 80 MAD per person.

2. Spend an afternoon in the shade of trees at Agadir Birds Valley

Another item you should add to your list of fun activities to do in Agadir is a visit to Agadir Birds Valley . This is a cute little park and zoo in the center of the city.

It’s a fun activity to do in the middle of the day if you want to escape the heat as the park is well shaded and cool even during summer.

You’ll see a stunning variety of birds in this park. You’ll be surrounded by parrots, flamingos, swans, and peacocks. There are also other animals who live there such as lambs, deers, and turtles.

It’s a great place to visit for a picnic in the early afternoon when the day is at its warmest. You can eat in the shade of trees in front of a few ponds while listening to the sound of birds and a small waterfall. The best part is that this zoo is free to visit and can easily be accessed from anywhere in the city!

3. Observe crocodiles at Agadir Crocodile park

If you want a surreal and fascinating experience while visiting Agadir, make sure you pass by Agadir Crocodile Park . This beautiful reserve is a paradise for crocodiles.

The park was originally created as part of a conservation project to protect Nile crocodiles. It has been a massive success and is now home to several generations of crocs.

The park is also a beautiful botanical park where you can admire more than 300 species and varieties of plants. Have a look at the park’s website for information on admission prices and opening hours.

4. Go for a stroll in The Souk El Had d’Agadir

There is nothing quite like walking around the public markets to immediately feel immersed in the new culture you’re discovering. Souks and open-air markets can tell you so many things about the Moroccan culture.

From the way people dress to how they talk and bargain prices, a market is often the best place to discover all of these small cultural nuances.

best places to visit in Agadir

Souk El Had in Agadir is a great market to get your dose of Moroccan culture. When I was living at the coastal city, I would always start my day with a visit to this market.

5. Go for a hike up to the old Kasbah

The old mud Kasbah overlooking the city from the top of a nearby hill offers superb views. It’s the best place to visit if you want an idea of how big the city is or if you just want a taste of the past.

This Kasbah is one of the few architectural structures that was left after an earthquake destroyed the city in the sixties. It used to house 300 people but now all that remains are the outer walls of the fortress.

This walled city was built in 1572 by the Moroccan King Moulay Abdallah el-Ghalib, to protect the people living on the coast from possible Portuguese invasions.

Panorama of Agadir Morocco - Top things to do in Agadir - Journal of Nomads

The walk from the city center to the top of the hill is quite long and strenuous. It’s better to take a taxi up for 30 MAD and then walk back towards the city.

If you do feel like walking there, this is where you’ll find the old Kasbah:

You can also visit the old Kasbah and Souk El Had on a guided city walking tour . During this Agadir Discovery Tour you’ll learn about the history of Agadir while visiting the city’s highlights.

6. Discover La Medina d’Agadir

A few miles away from the city center is where you’ll find a huge recreation of what Agadir was like before it was ravaged by an earthquake.

This medina is a wonderful hidden treasure just outside of Agadir . Walking between the replicas of old columns and walls feels like taking a trip into the past.

Things to do in Agadir Morocco - Medina in Agadir

If you go there early in the morning, you’ll find the place to be surprisingly not crowded. The entrance costs 40 MAD but includes a free drink in one of the cafes you’ll find on location.

You can negotiate with taxi drivers and get a ride there and back to Agadir for 100 MAD.

You can also go there on a guided tour during which you’ll get a lot of background information:

7. See stunning mosques and museum

The central part of Agadir has some beautiful monuments and museums.

If you want a small break from surfing and bathe in culture instead of in the sea, start your visit to the city center with a stroll around the Grand Mosque .

This mosque is really big and has a very modern design that contrasts with the architecture of other mosques around the country.

monuments and buildings to see in Agadir

If you would prefer to visit museums, I would recommend first passing by the Amazigh museum . It has some of the most interesting displays of Amazigh culture and artifacts you’ll find around the country. The exhibit showcases traditional Amazigh rugs and carpets as well as some jewelry and musical instruments.

To learn more about the earthquake that struck Agadir in the sixties and how it tragically altered the lives of its people, pass by the Agadir Memorial Museum .

This museum is a memorial and testimony to the tragic event that affected the city. It holds a fascinating collection of black and white photos that depict what Agadir looked like before the Earthquake in the 1920s.

8. Walk along Agadir’s sea-front boulevard

For a lovely walk near the beach, take a stroll on Agadir’s sea-front boulevard .

There are many quirky restaurants and cafes along the boulevard and they are the perfect place to enjoy a Moroccan tea while listening to the sound of the waves. You can also rent a long chair or lay on your towel on the beach to sunbathe.

9. Go on one of these 4 great day trips from Agadir

There are tons of fun activities to do in Agadir itself but the nature that surrounds the city is also worth exploring. If you’re wondering what are the best day trips from Agadir, here are a few places I would strongly recommend visiting:

9.1 Paradise Valley Agadir

If you spend enough time in Morocco , it won’t take long before you start hearing stories of a gorgeous mountain valley filled with palm trees, rivers, pools, and stunning waterfalls in the south of the country.

This hidden valley is often called Agadir Paradise Valley or simply Paradise Valley . It’s a section of the Tamraght River valley in the Moroccan High Atlas mountains.

Paradise valley Morocco

Paradise Valley is located just 58 km from Agadir and getting there is very easy. You can read everything about visiting Paradise Valley and how to get there independently in our Paradise Valley Travel Guide .

How to visit Paradise Valley Agadir

There are many tour operators organizing day tours to Paradise Valley from Agadir. Here are the ones we recommend:

9.2 Souss Massa National Park

Souss Massa is an impressive natural park located South of Agadir. It was created in 1991 to preserve the wetlands of the region and the fauna that inhabits them.

The park consists of 33 000 hectares of wetland, marshes, swamps, and white sand dunes. It’s one of the few places in Morocco where it’s possible to see the northern bald ibis. There are also many other exotic birds that come to breed in this park.

The only way to visit the natural reserve is with a guide. I recommend the following tour to Souss Massa National Park:

9.3 Adventure Desert Trip

Agadir is surrounded by desert landscapes, sand dunes and traditional villages. If you love the thrill of a desert adventure, then you should definitely join one of the following trips into the desert:

9.4 Taghazout

Taghazout is a cool surfing town where surfers from all over the world come to enjoy the winter waves. It’s sometimes quoted as one of the best winter surfing destinations in Morocco . The water temperature rarely drops below 16C in winter and the air temperature hovers around 18-20 C even in January.

Read our Surfing Guide to Morocco to find out about surfing in Taghazout.

Where to eat in Agadir – Best restaurants in Agadir

If you’re a fan of delicious food and want to try what Moroccan cuisine has to offer, you’ll have a blast in Agadir!

Agadir has traditional restaurants where you can sample the best Moroccan gastronomy. There is also great European cuisine, and good vegan and vegetarian options in town.

Here are some of our favorite restaurants in the city:

Restaurant Daffy

Restaurant Daffy is the first restaurant I visited in Agadir and I totally fell in love with it, even going back three times. It specializes in tagines and other traditional recipes. Here you can have one of the best fish tagines on the whole coast of Morocco!

They also serve a wonderful octopus tagine. The traditional dishes are also served with plenty of delicious steaming-hot vegetables, prunes, and lemons. The service at the restaurant Daffy is great and the staff will really make you feel at home.

Let’s Be Healing Food

Every dish served at the Let’s Be Healing Food restaurant is a work of art while being extremely delicious. The way the food is presented at the restaurant is taken to a whole new level. Just have a look at these pictures and see for yourself!

Not only are the dishes stunningly beautiful, but they also feel very healthy. That’s probably thanks to the number of fresh fruits and veggies that decorate every plate.

They have gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options. They have great pancakes, smoothies, and desserts. I recommend trying their vegetarian tacos, you won’t regret it!

The restaurant is located in Tamraght , outside of Agadir, but it’s well worth getting there by local buses.

L’Ardoise Gourmande

If you want a change from traditional Moroccan cuisine while visiting Agadir, I strongly recommend L’Ardoise Gourmande , a charming French restaurant. They have excellent shellfish dishes and some of the best beef tenderloins in Morocco.

The cuisine is inspired by many traditional French dishes but with a Moroccan twist.

How to get to Agadir from Marrakech

Marrakech , often called the ”Red City”, is one of the most visited destinations in Morocco. It’s filled with hammams, souks, museums, and palaces.

Transiting between Marrakech and Agadir is very easy and it can be done by hopping on a bus, aboard a plane or by driving there in your own car.

How to get to Agadir from Marrakech by bus

The best way to get from Marrakech to Agadir is by bus with two bus companies called CTM and Supratours.

I’ve traveled around Morocco with various bus companies and CTM and Supratours , although being slightly more expensive, are the only ones I would recommend. The buses are always newer and much more comfortable than the ones used by other companies.

The trip between the two cities will cost between 100 and 130 MAD and takes around 3 hours.

You can catch the bus at the CTM bus station in Marrakech in the city center on Abou Bakr Seddiq street (see map down below). You can buy your ticket in advance at the bus station or book it online .

Remember, if you book your ticket online, you still have to go to the CTM office to pay for your luggage on the day of departure so make sure you arrive a bit ahead of time. You can also consult the bus schedules on the CTM website .

This is where you can find the CTM bus station in Marrakech:

This is where the Supratours bus station is located in Marrakech:

You can find the Supratours ticket prices and schedules here .

In Agadir, you’ll reach the respective bus stations of these companies. They’re both located right in the city center so it’s very convenient to get from there to your accommodation.

How to drive from Marrakech to Agadir

These two cities are not too far from each other and the road between both locations is in pristine condition. Traveling from one city to the other by car is easy and convenient.

Whether you travel in your own car or in a rented one , this road goes along some gorgeous landscapes and you’ll have the freedom to stop whenever you want to take pictures.

Only 258 km separate the two cities and driving to Agadir takes on average 3 hours. The best way to get there is to follow highway A7.

How to get to Agadir from Essaouira

Essaouira attracts a crowd of surfers and backpackers throughout the year. The city has peculiar Portuguese architecture and the small streets are filled with the beautiful handicraft of local artisans.

Essaouira and Agadir are two great Moroccan surfing destinations . They’re both located on the Western coastline of the country and it’s really easy to visit the two places back to back.

How to get to Agadir from Essaouira by bus

Essaouira is not very big and it’s easy to find the two main bus stations (CTM and Supratours) located very close to the old town.

Here is where you’ll find the Supratours bus station in Essaouira:

And this is the location of the CTM bus station:

You can find the bus schedules and ticket prices on the CTM and Supratours websites. In Essaouira, it’s very convenient to just buy the tickets directly at the bus stations instead of online.

How to drive from Essaouira to Agadir

The road between Essaouira and Agadir is one of the most beautiful in the country. It follows the coastline and you’ll be driving right next to pristine beaches and through idyllic little villages.

If you have your own car or if you’re renting one , you’ll find that the highway connecting the two cities is a very pleasant one to drive on. To get there, simply follow highway N1 towards the South.

How to get around Agadir

Agadir is a very touristic destination and getting around the city itself is fairly easy. The touristy part of the town is small enough that you can reach any attraction on foot.

Agadir has good public buses. They cost between 3 and 5 MAD. Just hand the money directly to the driver and he’ll give you a bus ticket.

You can get a map of the city with the bus lines and bus stops on it at the tourist office on the Boulevard Mohammad V near the Miramar Hotel.

Getting around Agadir by taxi is also very easy. Make sure the driver starts the taximeter so you don’t get overcharged.

I hope this guide will be useful on your trip to Agadir! Have you been to Agadir before? Are you planning on visiting this city soon? Let us know in the comments below.

Thank you for the info Ian!

‘You can get from the airport to the city center by bus, train, shared taxi, or a rental car’

Last time I looked, there was no train station at Agadir airport to take you in to the city, so you might want to edit your information?

Hi Mary, thanks for mentioning it. Agadir indeed doesn’t have a train station, this must have slipped in by accident. Thanks for letting me know!

By Plane -- Due to Agadir's fly-in/fly-out beach resort status, the city's al-Massira airport (tel. 0528/839112 ), located 25km (16 miles) east of the city center, is a large, modern building offering most of the services one would expect. There is only one terminal for both arrivals and departures, where you'll find desks for rental-car services, a ONMT tourist office (though it only hands out glossy brochures) open between 6am and midnight, a téléboutique, a couple of small souvenir shops, and a cafe/news agency that sells the odd English-language magazine and Agadir city maps.

There are also an ATM and three currency exchange booths that operate between 8am and 7pm but can sometimes be closed for no apparent reason or open outside of these hours. Though you will generally find a bank or bureau de change near your hotel or can usually exchange cash (they may not accept traveler's checks) at your hotel, it's best to pick up some Moroccan dirham at the airport just in case.

Many hotels are happy to arrange an airport pickup for you, and if you're on a package holiday, this should be included. Grands taxis are located straight outside the terminal and charge a set rate of 200dh (ignore the outdated sign stating a daily fee of 150dh) for the drive into town. Apart from dirham, they will normally accept euros and sometimes U.S. dollars and British pounds, but you will receive change only in dirham. Tip: Although they can take up to six passengers, these airport taxis will usually refuse to take multiple passengers who have only just met at the airport. This is to ensure that business is spread out. If you can, try to group up with any fellow independent travelers while still in the terminal.

A modern airport shuttle bus (no. 22) departs for the city nine times a day between 6am and 8pm. Tickets are bought at a counter in the arrivals area, and cost 60dh per adult and 30dh for children up to 12.

By Bus -- Buses to Agadir arrive daily from numerous cities in Morocco, including Marrakech (5 hr.; 95dh-110dh), Casablanca (8 hr.; 200dh), El Jadida (9 hr.; 120dh-140dh), Essaouira (4 hr.; 50dh-70dh), Fes (13 hr.; 245dh-260dh), Meknes (12 hr.; 240dh-260dh), Ouarzazate (8 hr.; 120dh-140dh), Rabat (11 hr.; 200dh-220dh), Tangier (16 hr.; 260dh-290dh), Tafraoute (5 hr.; 80dh), Taroudannt (2 1/2 hr.; 50dh), and Tiznit (2 hr.; 30dh).

All long-distance bus companies, including the ONCF-aligned Supratours, arrive at the recently built gare routière on the outskirts of the city on rue Chair Alhamra Mohammed ben Brahim. The multilevel building houses a few cafe-restaurants and is at least a 30-minute trudge northwest into the city center. Alternatively, there are usually plenty of orange-color petits taxis around that will take you this short distance for around 20dh to 30dh. For onward travel from Agadir, all companies depart from the bus station, where they each have their own ticket booths on the ground floor (you must pay in cash). For an early morning departure, it's advisable to purchase your ticket the day prior to both ensure your seat and allow you time to ignore the touts and peruse the options available. Supratours and CTM buses (tel. 0522/541010 central reservations; www.ctm.ma) to Marrakech are regularly full, so it's best to prebook your seat as early as possible. Supratours (tel. 0528/224010, or 0890/203040 central reservations; www.oncf.ma) also has an office in town at 10 rue des Orangiers (tel. 0528/841207 ), at the northern end of boulevard Hassan II, which is open Monday to Saturday 9am to 7:30pm and Sunday 9am to 1pm and 3 to 7pm for ticket sales (cash only). Note: Just to confuse the issue, some long-distance buses to Agadir travel only as far as Inezgane, a bustling city some 13km (8 miles) southeast of Agadir and more conveniently located to the major access highways. If this is the case, there are plenty of grands taxis at the bus station plying the route between the two cities (20dh). Ask upon purchasing your ticket so you may avoid this inconvenience, or at least be preadvised.

By Grand Taxi -- Long-distance grands taxis are located on the southern edge of the city on the corner of rue de Fes and rue d'Essaouira. The most regular routes include Essaouira (1 1/2 hr.; 85dh), Marrakech (3 1/2 hr.; 150dh), Taroudannt (1 1/2 hr.; 50dh), and Tiznit (1 1/2 hr.; 50dh).

By Car -- Driving into Agadir is pretty straightforward thanks to the modern, well-designed network of roads leading into and within the city. The coastal road from Essaouira enters the city at the northern end of boulevard Mohammed V, while the major highways from Tiznit, Taroudannt, and Marrakech converge at the hub city of Inezgane. From here a two-lane highway heads into Agadir's city center, where three of the four major parallel streets of boulevard Hassan II, boulevard Mohammed V, and boulevard du 20 Août make navigation relatively easy. Parking within the city usually isn't a problem, and the aggressive driving in other parts of the country is not a problem here.

A two-lane highway connecting the airport and the city center is one of the most hassle-free and navigable in all Morocco, and if you're picking up or dropping off a rental car here, there's a 24-hour gas station, selling both leaded and unleaded, at the airport's entrance.

Visitor Information

The ONMT regional tourist office, on the upper level of Building Iguenouane, opposite the post office on the corner of avenue du Prince Moulay Abdellah and avenue Prince Sidi Mohammed (tel. 0528/846377 ), is open Monday to Thursday 8:30am to noon and 2:30 to 6:30pm, and on Friday from 8:30 to 11:30am and 2:30 to 6:30pm. This is the main tourist office of the region and has some useful lists of recommended accommodations and restaurants. There is also a local Syndicat d'Initiative, or tourist information bureau, on avenue Mohammed V opposite avenue du Général Kéttani (tel. 0528/840307 ), which is open daily 9am to noon and 3 to 6pm. It carries a few pamphlets on local restaurants and attractions, as well as lists of emergency medical centers.

City Layout

Agadir is very easy to navigate, and most travelers spend their time between the beach and the four parallel main roads heading away from the beach: boulevard du 20 Août, boulevard Mohammed V, boulevard Hassan II, and avenue du Prince Moulay Abdellah. Here you will find the city's restaurants, banks, and many of its moderate hotels and self-catering apartment blocks, along with a large number of fixed-price souvenir shops. A couple of blocks north of avenue du Prince Moulay Abdellah is an area known as Nouvelle Talborjt, where a number of basic hotels have replaced the old bus station. The northern end of Agadir Bay rises up past a new marina complex to the large industrial port and beyond to the beaches around Taghazout. Boulevard du 20 Août provides access to the beach and its long promenade, where more restaurants and nightlife are to be found. At press time, this promenade was being extended farther south to eventually connect with the first of the beachfront resorts. Branching off south from boulevard du 20 Août are Chemin de Oued Souss and rue des Dunes, where an ever-increasing number of resorts are lined up side by side along the southern bay.

Getting Around

Getting around Agadir is very easy. The beach-facing city center affords a degree of direction to even the most geographically challenged, and because there's no medina, streets are wide, straight, and well signposted.

By Foot -- This is how most people discover Agadir. Those based in the city center will find themselves walking everywhere, as most travelers' needs are met within a relatively small area. For those staying in one of the southern beachfront resorts, the 20-minute walk into the city center or beach promenade usually depends on the heat and the desire to leave the confines of the resort.

By Scooter -- More for heading to the beaches north of Agadir rather than to get around the city itself, hiring a scooter or motorcycle is an option for a fun day out. Plan on paying around 250dh per day for a scooter, or 300dh per day for a 125cc motorcycle. There's a string of pavement operations located along the shaded, southern stretch of boulevard du 20 Août, but I would steer clear of them. These boys are unlicensed, uninsured, and uninterested in anything other than your money. It's better to hire from a reputable agency such as Transrent (tel. 0528/843378 or 0661/385000), on the corner of boulevard du 20 Août and rue de la Jeunesse, open Monday to Saturday 9am to 7pm.

By Taxi -- Petits taxis are really only needed to get around town if you are staying in a beachside resort, and this is where you'll find many of the orange-color vehicles waiting for business. Travelers heading to/from the bus station should also consider using one. At all times, request that the driver put on the meter. Most trips within the main tourist areas of Agadir should cost no more than 15dh during the day and a bit more after 8pm, when a 50% evening surcharge kicks in. For transport to the bus station, the metered fare should only rise 10dh at the most. Petits taxis are licensed to operate only within the city environs. If you wish to head to Taghazout and the beaches north of the city, charter a grand taxi. These Mercedes sedans take a maximum of six passengers -- though four is comfortable -- and cost around 250dh for the day. You can find them on the southern edge of the city on the corner of rue de Fes and rue d'Essaouira.

By Car -- As with scooter hire, renting a car for the day is an option only if you want to explore the coastline north of Agadir, which is easy to navigate and makes for a fun day. The high number of car-rental firms based in Agadir can equate to some very good deals among the local companies; however, make sure they have acceptable logistical and mechanical assistance to match the major international companies, which also offer one-way rentals. Rates vary greatly between seasons, and sometimes discounts of 10% to 40% can be negotiated, especially with the local companies. For a general idea, plan on 550dh to 650dh per day for a small, four-door sedan with unlimited mileage and insurance.

The major international firms can be found on or near the northern ends of boulevard Hassan II and boulevard Mohammed V and include Budget, Residence Marhaba, boulevard Mohammed V (tel. 0528/848222 ); Europcar, corner of boulevard Mohammed V and rue Hubert Giraud (tel. 0528/840203 ); Hertz, Residence Marhaba, boulevard Mohammed V (tel. 0528/449984 ); and National/Alamo, Immeuble Sud Bahia, boulevard Hassan II, opposite rue des Orangiers (tel. 0528/840026 ).

Companies with desks at the airport include Avis tel. 0528/839244 or 0661/530618), Budget (tel. 0528/839101 or 0675/386175), Europcar (tel. 0528/840337), Hertz (tel. 0528/839071 or 0667/619069), National/Alamo (tel. 0528/839121 or 0667/199979), and SixT (tel. 0668/190570); all are usually open from 8am to 10pm.

Reputable local companies include Abid Rent A Car, Complexe Tivoli, at the junction of Chemin de Oued Souss and rue des Dunes (tel. 0528/827777 or 0661/574266), which offers one-way rentals to Marrakech; Transrent (tel. 0528/843378 or 0661/385000), on the corner of boulevard du 20 Août and rue de la Jeunesse; and Always Rent-A-Car, Agadir Toyota, southern end of boulevard Hassan II (tel. 0528/842543 or 0666/019385), which also has a desk at the airport (tel. 0528/846061 ).

By Train -- It's not really a train, but it sure looks like one. Petit Train d'Agadir (tel. 0661/164384 ) is a battery-operated tourist train that takes visitors on a 40-minute circuit of the city, encompassing the southern beach resorts all the way to the northern edge of the beach promenade and up to avenue Hassan II and avenue du Prince Moulay Abdellah. The main pickup/drop-off is on boulevard du 20 Août, at the bottom entrance to the Vallée des Oiseaux. The circuits commence at 9:15am and continue on the hour to 6pm, costing 18dh per adult and 12dh children 5 to 12.

Note : This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

12 BEST day trips from Essaouira

Follow Explore Essaouira on Instagram

From a short taxi ride out of town to a three hour drive, here we cover the best day trips from Essaouira.

There are so many things to do in Essaouira , but if you’re staying a week or more, or perhaps using Essaouira as a longer-term base for your Morocco travels (indeed Essaouira is a popular destination in Morocco for digital nomads ), you may be looking for some ideas for day trips from Essaouira. Although we wouldn’t blame you if you just wanted to chill around the medina sipping mint tea and taking long sunset walks along the beach; Essaouira’s chilled out vibes are very easy to slip into!

But if you do want to explore more of the beautiful Moroccan countryside and coastlines around Essaouira, or perhaps venture further afield to explore a Moroccan city, then here we’ve rounded up for you the best Essaouira day trips.

Self-driving is the easiest way to travel for a day trip from Essaouira. But if you don’t have your own wheels, we have provided other transport options for each destination suggested. Please note that any prices quoted here were correct at the time of writing and are subject to change.

Alternatively, why not join a tour with Lou’s Rides who organised day trips into the Essaouira countryside to meet local people and guide you off the beaten track.

Lou's Rides Essaouira

If you have more time, you may want to follow our 5-day Agadir to Essaouira road trip itinerary which takes in many of the suggested Essaouira daytrip suggestions below, including Diabat , Sidi Kaouki and Taghazout.

The below map shows the locations of the best day trips from Essaouira.

READ OUR GUIDE: Diabat Distance from Essaouira: 4km (10min drive)

Dar Sultan Palace

Four kilometres south of Essaouira’s medina is the dusty, sleepy village of Diabat . This is the easiest day trip from Essaouira being only a ten minute drive or beach stroll away.

Back in the early 1970s, Diabat (and Essaouira) was firmly on the hippie trail, solidified by a visit from the legendary musician, Jimi Hendrix, in 1969. He may have only visited for a couple of days (in fact, apparently he wanted to buy Diabat), but this was a good enough reason to open a Jimi Hendrix café and hotel in the village, which are still open today.

Diabat sees only a small fraction of the tourists compared to Essaouira, and the hippie communes are long gone. But if you are visiting Essaouira during the high season months of  July  and  August  and want to escape the crowds, Diabat is the place to come. Visitors only tend to come here for a  quad biking  or horse riding tour, or they may be staying at the  Sofitel Essaouira Mogador Golf & Spa  (which is actually in Diabat rather than Essaouria) and tend to stick to the confines of luxury.

But one of the top things to do in Diabat is to visit the ruins of Dar Sultan Palace , nestled amongst the sand dunes between village and the beach. It has been rumoured that Dar Sultan Palace inspired Jimmie Hendrix to write  Castles Made of Sand .

Getting to Diabat

It’s a very pleasant walk along the shoreline from Essaouira to Diabat (when the river between the two places isn’t flowing). From Diabat beach there’s a wide stone track that leads up to the village (1.5km).

Otherwise, you can flag down a petit taxi from Essaouira to take you to Diabat (read our guide to taking  petits taxis in Essaouira ). Taxis won’t take you along the track to Diabat beach though. Between Essaouira and Diabat, the fare is fixed at 30DH.

Diabat to Essaouira walk

Diabat to Essaouira walk

Escape the hustle and bustle of Essaouira’s medina with this 5km walk from Diabat to Essaouira medina via Dar Sultan Palace, the beach, and a sundowner and one of Essaouira’s beach bars.

2. Sidi Kaouki

READ OUR GUIDE: Sidi Kaouki Distance from Essaouira: 23km (25min drive)

Sidi Kaouki beach

Sidi Kaouki is a surfing beach, 30 minutes drive south of Essaouira. It’s a beautiful spot, but the secret is out on this sandy stretch and you will find a handful of basic restaurants, and locals offering camel and horse rides along the beach.

A large abandoned building stands at the northern end of the sandy beach. This is actually the shrine and pilgrimage site of Sidi Kaouki, a 19th-century marabout (a Muslim religious leader and teacher), and who this Berber village is named after. To the north of this shrine are rock pools to explore, and to the south is the long sandy swathe of beach.

The main reason tourists visit Sidi Kaouki is for the surfing. Indeed the surf here is much stronger than Essaouira beach . There’s a surf shop next to the restaurants, adjacent to the car park, if you want to hire a surfboard or boogie board, or perhaps have lessons. Or if you just wan to relax, hire sun loungers and a parasol on the beach, 50DH for a pair (although laying your towel out on the sand is free).

Getting to Sidi Kaouki

The easiest way to get to Sidi Kaouki from Essaouira is to take a Grand Taxi. You will need to get to the Grand Taxi station, which is next to the main bus station in Essaouira. Click here for the Google Map point. There is a flat fee of 15DH per person, or 90DH for the whole taxi (i.e. 6 people), to Sidi Kaouki. To get back to Sidi Kaouki, arrange a collection time with your driver.

Alternatively, you can take a public bus from just outside Bab Doukkala. Head to the blue ‘ Lima Bus, Essaouira ‘ sign on the right as you exit Bab Doukkala and take the Lima bus, Line 2   (7DH per person).

3. Had Draa market

READ OUR GUIDE: Had Draa market Distance from Essaouira: 30km (25min drive)

side trips from agadir

Had Draa is a dusty, non-descript village in the countryside around Essaouira. But on Sunday mornings it comes alive with the largest markets in the region. It’s a fascinating insight into local culture and enables you to discover authentic rural life in Morocco.

Animals and produce have been traded for centuries at Had Draa Souk, and is the place to come if you need to pick up a camel, goat, or donkey (do check your Ryanair baggage allowance though). There’s also an on-site halal abattoir and stalls selling grilled-meat kebabs.

Aside from livestock, there’s everything from baskets, to fresh fruit and vegetables, carpets, clothes, kitchenware, and much more.

Market sellers arrive from sunrise to set up and much of the cattle selling takes place in the early hours. However, the market is still bustling from 9am to 12pm, so don’t worry about missing breakfast to get there.

Getting to Had Draa market

Local buses leave from outside Bab Doukkala to Had Draa (ask around on a Sunday morning), or take a Grand Taxi from the Grand Taxi station. Either way it’s 10DH per person.

4. Ida Ougourd market

READ OUR GUIDE: Ida Ougourd market Distance from Essaouira: 20km (25min drive)

Ida Ougourd market

If your visit to Essaouira does not coincide with the Sunday market at  Had Draa , the next best option in the region is Ida Ougourd , held every Wednesday. Set on a hillside, the market is separated into distinct areas: a large open fruit and veg market spills out in front of the mosque, a Halal abattoir will be found down a little alleyway, and animals are traded in a walled square. There’s even a donkey park (as opposed to a car park).

The market starts from 5am, but is still going around 9am. Between 10am and 11am it’s starting to wind down, and by noon it’s finished.

Getting to Ida Ougourd market

Local buses leave from outside Bab Doukkala to Ida Ougourd (around 7am on Wednesday mornings), or take a Grand Taxi from the Grand Taxi station. Either way it’s 7DH per person.

5. Val d’Argan

READ OUR GUIDE: Val d’Argan winery Distance from Essaouira: 25km (25min drive)

Essaouira vineyard

People are often surprised to hear that there has been a vineyard in Essaouira since 1994. Just 25 minutes along the road from the centre of Essaouira to Marrakech is Domaine du Val d’Argan .

Baked by the desert and benefiting from the trade winds off the Atlantic, Domaine du Val d’Argan is the first and only Moroccan vineyard exclusively dedicated to grape varieties of the Rhône Valley. Over the past 20 years, the vineyard has grown from 5 to 50 hectares, with 13 different grape varieties from the Rhône Valley.

Visitors are welcome for wine tasting, or to enjoy Moroccan cooking accompanied by the wines harvested on site. There is also bed and breakfast accommodation available, with guest rooms spread around the gardens with a swimming pool.

Email in advance to reserve your wine-tasting session. The price is 200DH and includes tasting:

  • Le Val d’Argan Blanc (white wine)
  • Argania du Val d’Argan Blanc (white wine)
  • Le Val d’Argan Rosé (rosé wine)
  • Le Val d’Argan Rouge (red wine)
  • Argania du Val d’Argan Rouge (red wine)

Wine-tasting session times are:

  • 11am to 11:30am
  • 2:30pm to 3:00pm
  • 3:00pm to 3:30pm

Getting to Val d’Argan

There is no shuttle service to the Val d’Argan, so visitors need to make their own way over (a Grand Taxi or private driver). Expect to pay 300DH for the return journey.

6. Les Jardin by Villa Maroc

READ OUR GUIDE: Day pass at Les Jardins de Villa Maroc Distance from Essaouira: 24km (20min drive)

Les Jardins de Villa Maroc

If your Airbnb, riad, or hotel in Essaouira doesn’t have a swimming pool, how about treating yourself to a day pass at a swimming pool?

Les Jardins de Villa Maroc is stylish, small resort, nestled in the Swiri countryside, just off the road to Marrakech, and offers a day pass (11am to 5pm, 320DH per person) for visitors to use the heated swimming pool and dine at the restaurant. This is the sister hotel to Villa Maroc , Morocco’s oldest riad-hotel situated in the heart of the medina.

A transfer from Essaouira’s medina is included in your day pass fee. The BBQ buffet lunch spread is fantastic.

Getting to Les Jardins de Villa Maroc

A transfer from Villa Maroc in the medina is included in your day pass. This is arranged on booking.

7. Hôtel Domaine de L’Arganeraie

READ OUR REVIEW: Hôtel Domaine de L’Arganeraie Distance from Essaouira: 11km (20min drive)

Hôtel Domaine de L’Arganeraie

As an alternative option to Les Jardins de Villa Maroc , Hôtel Domaine de L’Arganeraie is an equally beautiful setting and also offers a day pass for non-guests to use their heated pool.

Hidden off a dusty road through the village of Ghazoua, Hôtel Domaine de L’Arganeraie is just a 20 minute drive from Essaouira.

The heated pool is larger, and as the day pass (11am to 6:30pm) to use the pool is slightly cheaper (from 100DH per person), it’s popular with families. The lunch menu is a good selection including pizzas, burgers, tagines, and vegetarian options.

Getting to Hôtel Domaine de L’Arganeraie

On booking, a transfer can be arranged for your from Essaouira (100DH, priced by car rather than person).

READ OUR GUIDE: Things to do in Safi Distance from Essaouira: 124km (2 hour drive)

Safi pottery

Rarely on the tourist radar, the coastal town of Safi just a two hour drive north of Essaouira , is famed for its pottery. Indeed, a visit to the Pottery Quarter is one of the top things to do in Safi , Morocco. Although with it’s Portuguese history and coastal location, we believe there is more to this sleepy town and is worthy as a full day trip from Essaouira.

Being an industrial town, Safi is admittedly not as picturesque as Essaouira, and perhaps why it’s off the beaten tourist trail in Morocco. But its Portuguese history provide pockets of interest, including Cathédrale Portugaise, Qasr A Bahr, and the Kechla. Plus a wander around the medina feels far less touristy that Essaouira, and for surfers, Safi provides another excellent surf spot along Morocco’s Atlantic coastline.

En route to Safi from Essaouira, its worth stopping at Oualidia , a sleeping fishing village (renowned for shellfish) spread across a crescent-shaped lagoon with soft sand and gentle waters.

Getting to Safi

If you don’t have your own wheels, a Grand Taxi is the next best option.

CTM also operates a regular bus service between Essaouira and Safi. At the time of writing, the first CTM bus leaves Essaouira at 10am (arriving 12pm) and the last bus leaves Safi at 5:15pm (arriving 7:15pm). The bus station in Safi is south of the town centre, so you will need to get a petit taxi when you arrive (expect to pay 10DH). Once you’re in the town centre, everything is is walkable.

9. Taghazout

Distance from Essaouira: 152km (2.5 hour drive)

Taghazout beach

Taghazout is characterful surf town just north of Agadir. With its hippy / back-packer vibe, and restaurants hugging the coastline, it’s a wonderful place to spend the day. You can also hire boogieboards for the kids to play in the surf. Hours of fun!

The wind isn’t as strong in Taghazout compared to Essaouira, but the beach is very small and compact. It’s one of those Moroccan towns where there isn’t really a lot to do, but there’s just a really lovely vibe, and for this reason alone makes it a worthwhile day trip from Essaouira.

Getting to Taghazout

Hiring a car or a driver is really the only way to get to Taghazout from Essaouira.

10. Paradise Valley

Distance from Essaouira: 186km (3.5 hour drive)

Paradise Valley, Agadir

Paradise Valley is a stunning hidden gorge with ponds to paddle and swim in. Further downstream are cafes along, and even in , the river serving the usual orange juices, tagines, and western food.

As you driver through Taghazout to get to Paradise Valley, it’s worthwhile combining the two for a day trip from Essaouira.

Head to this Google Map point for parking, it’s then a 15 minute walk down to the gorge. Plan to arrive either early in the day or evening if travelling during school holidays as it does get rather busy.

Getting to Paradise Valley

Hiring a car or a driver is really the only way to get to Paradise Valley from Essaouira. Although if you are staying in Agadir, many of the hotels offer a day tour to Paradise Valley.

Distance from Essaouira: 175km (3 hour drive)

Agadir beach

Many visitors to Morocco choose between Agadir or Essaouria for a beach holiday as they are the two obvious choices. However, these two Moroccan beach towns offer a very different vibe. Agadir is geared more towards package holiday tourist wanting a sun and pool holiday, whereas Essaouira offers a deeper cultural connection to tourists with its traffic tree medina and working fishing port.

In all honesty, Agadir is not the best representation of Morocco, and you would be forgiven for thinking you were on the Spanish Costas. An earthquake in 1960 destroyed most of the city, which has since been rebuilt into a large grid pattern with concrete being the preferred material.

So why come to Agadir? Well firstly, the long stretch of sandy beach is more sheltered that Essaouira, and Agadir enjoys a slightly warmer climate. If your visit to Essaouira has combined with very gusty winds and you would like to enjoy some calmer days sunbathing on the beach, it may be worth venturing down to Agadir.

Secondly, if you love shopping for a bargain, Agadir has one of the largest and liveliest souks in all of Morocco, Souk El Had. Set in a grid pattern and all undercover, it’s relatively easy to navigate and cool in the summer months. This timeless souk sells absolutely everything; electronics, food, clothes, hardware, toys, the list is seemingly endless. Just be prepared to haggle hard.

Thirdly, Agadir is home to Crocoparc , a superb reptile park and a must if visiting Agadir with kids . The entire park is exceptionally laid out and it is teeming with Nile crocodiles swimming and sunning themselves around a large lagoon. You will also find iguanas, tortoises, snakes, and a very cool cactus garden.

Getting to Agadir

If you don’t have your own wheels, you could arrange for a Grand Taxi to drive you (expect to pay 600DH each way).

The cheapest option is to take the CTM bus . However, at the time of writing, the earliest bus leaving Essaouira to Agadir is 14:30, which arrives at 17:30; not ideal times if you’re planning a day trip from Essaouira and not planning on staying overnight.

However, if you have more time, why not make it into a longer road trip and follow our 5-day Agadir to Essaouira road trip itinerary , which also stops off at Sidi Kaouki, Imsoune, and Taghazout enroute.

12. Marrakech

Distance from Essaouira: 185km (3 hour drive)

Marrakech Jemaa el-Fnaa

Many people visit Essaouira as a day trip from Marrakech. It therefore makes sense that you can do a day trip the other way around, from Essaouira to Marrakech! Admittedly, it will be a long day as it’s a three hour drive each way. But if you are basing yourself in Essaouira for a week or so, a day trip to Marrakech is very doable. Indeed, you really don’t need to decide between visiting Marrakech or Essaouira as it’s very easy to combine the two.

Essaouira is far more chilled and relaxed than Marrakech, so if your only experience of Morocco thus far is of Essaouira, be prepared for an assault on the senses, especially in the heart of the medina; motorbikes whizz at speed down the narrow alleyways, shops spill out on to the streets, donkeys dragging carts squeeze through the bustling thoroughfare, and this is all before you’ve reached the exotic fanfare of Jemaa el-Fnaa (the main square) with it’s snake charmers, street food, musicians, and teeth sellers (yes, teeth sellers). If you’re visiting Marrakech with kids , do take care with little ones when walking around.

Spend your morning wandering the medina, shopping and browsing, with lunch on a rooftop restaurant overlooking Jemaa el-Fnaa. Then in the afternoon, to escape the hustle and bustle of the media, dive into Jardin Majorelle, Le Jardin Secret, or Bahai Palace for some peace.

If you are visiting Essaouira with kids , a worthwhile day trip from Essaouira is the brilliant Oasiria waterpark in Marrakech. Here are a number of slides, a big wave pool, a very long lazy river, a climbing wall that runs alongside a pool, and a whole section devoted to small kids, complete with a pirate ship and more slides.

Getting to Marrakech

To  travel from Essaouira to Marrakech  you can either hire a private transfer (your accommodation host will be able to help you with this), Grand Taxi (expect to pay 600DH each way), or travel by  bus  (which is the cheapest option, especially for single or couple travellers).

The first Supratours bus to Marrakech from Essaouria leaves at 7am and arrives into Marrakech at 10am. The last bus back leaves Marrakech at 7pm and arrived to Essaouira at 10pm. It’s a long, but very doable day trip from Essaouira. Although there are early return buses if you prefer.

However, f you are visiting  Essaouira with kids , you may find that a private transfer is easier and more cost effective for a family.
