American Express Platinum Reserve Credit Card Review

Look at the travel-related benefits that this card offers. You might find a resemblance between the Platinum Travel card and this one, with the former offering similar benefits at half the annual membership fee. The reward rate for both cards is also similar. So, if travel benefits are all you need from your credit card, you might consider the Platinum Travel card instead.

If you’re looking for a premium credit card packed with all kinds of benefits, including some exclusive travel privileges , this card is worth looking at. If we leave behind the extra travel benefits that this card offers, it is in direct competition with HDFC’s Infinia and ICICI’s Emerald credit cards. If you’re one of those people for whom the AmEx logo increases the worth of their wallet, you can pick this one without a second thought. It’s not a bad deal, at least as far as premium cards are concerned specifically with the additional dining benefits and complimentary memberships. Let us know in the comments what you think of American Express’s premium offering and what benefits you seek in a high-end credit card.

The Platinum Card® from American Express is one of the top premium travel cards available. It comes with travel credits, hotel elite status, access to an impressive lounge collection, travel protections and other luxury perks. Terms apply.

Here are some things you should understand before applying for The Platinum Card® from American Express .

What to know before getting The Platinum Card® from American Express

1. amex has a "once per lifetime" welcome offer rule.

The Platinum Card® from American Express

Current and former holders of The Platinum Card® from American Express are ineligible for the welcome offer. This is commonly referred to as AmEx's "once per lifetime" rule .

Not sure if you’ve had some version of this card before? AmEx will check your welcome offer eligibility when you apply for a card — even before checking your credit. If you aren’t eligible for the welcome offer, AmEx will inform you of this through a small pop-up window. After notification, you have the option to continue with the application or to cancel it.

2. The The Platinum Card® from American Express welcome offer spending requirements

The Platinum Card® from American Express currently is offering a good welcome bonus: Earn 80,000 Membership Rewards® Points after you spend $8,000 on eligible purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months of Card Membership. Terms Apply. A $6,000 spending requirement won’t be easy for everyone to meet, so consider when you'll have a lot of expenses before you open the new card.

Also, mull over what expenses you can charge to the potential card in the next few months. If you come up short of the spending requirement, consider postponing your application to a time when you have more considerable expenses on the horizon — perhaps around the holidays, when you’re finally getting around to that bathroom remodel or before booking your next trip.

3. The Platinum Card® from American Express annual fee of $695 is higher than average

The Platinum Card® from American Express is an excellent choice for people looking for a premium travel card . But it may not be the right card for you. Before committing to a $695 annual fee, look at the card's benefits and note which perks you value the most. Then compare your list with other cards — which may be more affordable — to see if they might be a better fit. Terms apply.

For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® has a lower $550 annual fee and an easy-to-use $300 annual travel credit. Plus, Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers a Priority Pass Select membership and TSA PreCheck, NEXUS or Global Entry credit. However, if you're also going to pay for a Clear membership, it may be worth paying more for The Platinum Card® from American Express , which will reimburse you $199 each year for Clear, though not that you now have the option to get both PreCheck and Clear for less by bundling the two . Terms apply.

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , meanwhile, has an even lower annual fee at $395 and also offers TSA PreCheck or Global Entry credit. This card also offers complementary lounge access to the Capital One Lounges, more than 100 Plaza Premium lounges (including select Virgin Atlantic Clubhouses) and more than 1,300 Priority Pass lounges around the globe.

If you only travel a few times a year, the American Express® Gold Card could be a better fit. This card charges a much lower $325 annual fee, yet it offers an annual up to $120 in Uber credits for U.S. rides and food orders ($10 each month) and an annual up to $120 dining credit. Enrollment required.

You must add the American Express® Gold Card to your Uber app to receive the Uber Cash benefit. Plus, you'll earn 4 points per dollar at restaurants and on groceries, and 3 points per dollar on flights. Enrollment required. Terms apply.

This quiz can tell you if The Platinum Card® from American Express is worth the annual fee :

4. Your credit score needs to be strong

Even if this card seems like it would compliment your travels well, you may not be an ideal fit for this card. American Express generally requires a good to excellent credit score to qualify for The Platinum Card® from American Express . Terms apply.

You’ll want to have at least a 690 credit score before applying for the card. So, you may need to work on building your credit score before applying for the card.

And even still, excellent credit is not always a guarantee of approval. Many factors go into a bank's decision to approve you.

5. You could potentially earn $1,400 a year in statement credits — if you use them

The Platinum Card® from American Express offers over $1,400 in statement credits each year. You'll want to maximize these credits to justify paying the $695 annual fee. Terms apply.

Many of the card’s statement credits are based on monthly amounts:

Digital entertainment credit: up to $20 per month.

Premium Uber credit: up to $15 per month for U.S. rides or Uber Eats orders, with an additional $20 bonus in December.

Walmart+ monthly membership credit: $12.95 per month plus taxes.

Terms apply.

Other credits are only valid per calendar year:

Clear credit: up to $199 per year.

Airline fee credit: up to $200 per year. (Enrollment required.)

Hotel credit: up to $200 per year.

SoulCycle At-Home Bike Credit: up to $300 per year.

Equinox credit: up to $300 per calendar year.

Cardholders also get a Shop With Saks credit, which is applied semi-annually. You’ll get up to $50 in statement credits for purchases between January and June and up to $50 in statement credits for July through December. Enrollment required. Terms apply.

If you open your card account near the end of the year, make sure that you leave yourself enough time to maximize the annual credits and the Shop With Saks credit before the close of the year.

But while $1,400 in credits sounds good, understand whether they're realistic to use based on your spending. If you don't take an Uber that month, it's a lose it credit. Meanwhile, are you really going to buy (and use) a SoulCycle bike at home? And would you shop at Saks, when you'd be fine with the same type of stuff that's a fraction of the price sold from, say, Target instead?

6. You can add different types of authorized users

When you apply for this card, you’ll have the option to add authorized users. You get two choices for adding authorized user cards: An additional Platinum card or an additional Gold card.

AmEx charges $195 per card to add up to three additional Platinum cards. That may sound steep — especially on top of the card's $695 annual fee. However, this can be an excellent deal, depending on how the authorized user plans to use their benefits. Terms apply.

Additional Platinum cardmembers get complimentary access to the American Express Global Lounge Collection — including AmEx’s own excellent Centurion Lounges . Plus, additional Platinum card users get Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status (enrollment required), Hilton Honors Gold status (enrollment required) and access to the Fine Hotels & Resorts program. Terms apply.

Alternatively, you can add a companion Platinum user for free. Companion card users don’t get the same lounge access and elite status benefits as authorized Platinum cardholders. However, they can get their own TSA PreCheck or Global Entry credit and can help you earn Membership Rewards. Terms apply.

  • Includes lost or stolen passports or travel documents as an eligible reason for trip delay insurance.
  • Has a higher cap on high-value items for lost, damaged or stolen baggage.
  • Some readers have found the claim process to be more straightforward and simple.

OFFICIAL APPLICATION LINK: The Platinum Card from American Express

Bottom line

Some travelers who have both cards put their flights on the Amex Platinum to earn 5 points per dollar and put other travel expenses on the Chase Sapphire Reserve to earn 3 points per dollar and activate their trip cancellation and interruption protections.

You might want to keep the Amex Platinum primarily for Centurion Lounge access , hotel elite status and access to Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts , as well as nearly $1,500 in annual credits available to cardmembers.

However, you might want to avoid booking flights with the Amex Platinum because of the round-trip requirement and the lack of baggage delay protection . Instead, you'd prefer to use the Chase Sapphire Reserve for common carrier fares and other travel expenses .

The best credit cards for digital nomads and long-term travelers

T he right travel credit card is important for any trip as it can earn points or miles and provide valuable travel protections . But what if you travel for months at a time as a digital nomad?

My husband and I have been living on the road as digital nomads for more than six years. We work remotely online while traveling with no permanent home base. So, I'm writing this piece from a prolonged, personal experience.

Although every traveler values credit card benefits differently, this guide considers some of the cards that I believe are the best fit if you're living the extended travel or digital nomad life.

The best cards for digital nomads and long-term travelers

First, the quick hit list of the best cards for digital nomads and long-term travelers. I'll get into the details below.

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® : The best overall card for travel
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express : The best card for premium travel benefits
  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card : The best fixed-rate travel rewards card
  • Citi Strata Premier℠ Card (see rates and fees ): The best sub-$100-annual-fee card for travel and extended warranty protection
  • American Express® Green Card : The best card for modern travelers

The information for the American Express Green Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Comparison of the best cards for digital nomads and long-term travelers

*After the first $300 is spent on travel purchases annually

Now, let's dive deeper into what each of these cards has to offer. All of the welcome bonus valuations below are based on TPG's August 2024 valuations .

Chase Sapphire Reserve

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is one of TPG's favorite premium cards, thanks to its benefits and earning rates.

Welcome bonus : Earn 60,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 in the first three months from account opening.

Welcome bonus value: $1,230

  • 10 points per dollar on hotels and car rentals booked through Chase Travel
  • 10 points per dollar on Chase Dining purchases through Ultimate Rewards on prepaid restaurant reservations
  • 10 points per dollar on Lyft rides (through March 2025)
  • 5 points per dollar on flights booked through Chase Travel
  • 3 points per dollar on all other dining and travel purchases
  • 1 point per dollar on all other purchases

(Note that the elevated earn rates for travel purchases come into effect after the first $300 in travel purchases made on the card in a calendar year.)

Standout benefits :

  • Annual travel credit of up to $300
  • Priority Pass Select lounge access
  • Points redemption directly through the Ultimate Rewards travel portal at a rate of 1.5 cents apiece or points transfers to 11 airline and three hotel partners
  • Global Entry/TSA PreCheck application fee credit every four years
  • Special car rental privileges from National Car Rental , Avis and Silvercar
  • Access to The Edit℠ hotel and resort collection
  • Complimentary Lyft Pink All Access membership for two years (when activated by Dec. 31)
  • At least 12 months of complimentary DashPass (when activated by December 31, 2027)
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Travel protections, including a primary auto rental collision damage waiver , baggage delay insurance , emergency evacuation and transportation insurance , emergency medical/dental coverage, lost luggage reimbursement , roadside assistance, trip delay reimbursement and trip cancellation/interruption insurance
  • Shopping protections, including extended warranty protection , purchase protection and return protection

Annual fee : $550

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is an excellent card for long-term travelers because it earns 3 points per dollar on many travel purchases (after the first $300 spent on travel in a calendar year) and dining purchases.

It's travel protections are another reason why it's a great choice for digital nomads. These protections include everything from reimbursements for expenses related to travel delays and delayed baggage to emergency medical and dental benefits.

Although the annual fee is $550, the up-to-$300 annual travel credit, strong earnings on travel and dining purchases and travel protections can provide significant value when you're on the road all the time.

Plus, Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to hotel and airline partners or redeem them for 1.5 cents apiece through Chase Travel.

The Platinum Card from American Express

If you can maximize the statement credits and benefits that the Amex Platinum offers, it's a fantastic card for the long-term traveler.

However, be sure to check the CardMatch Tool to see if you're targeted for a higher welcome offer — although this offer is subject to change at any time. Not everyone will be targeted for the same offer.

Annual fee : $695

The Amex Platinum comes with numerous annual statement credits and the most comprehensive lounge benefits of any credit card on the market.

It's worth noting that you likely won't be able to maximize every credit. And admittedly, those of us who spend a lot of time outside the U.S. may have trouble using the Uber perk, since it's a monthly credit that's only good in the United States.

However, lounge access — especially to Centurion Lounges — and hotel elite status at Marriott and Hilton can be especially valuable to those living on the road.

The primary reason I believe the Amex Platinum is worth it for long-term travelers and digital nomads: the travel protections. However, note that enrollment is required for select benefits, and terms apply.

To learn more, read our full review of the Amex Platinum .

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

  • 10 miles per dollar on hotels & rental cars booked through Capital One Travel
  • 5 miles per dollar on flights and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel
  • 2 miles per dollar on all other purchases
  • $300 annual credit for bookings through Capital One Travel
  • 10,000 miles anniversary bonus
  • Unlimited Capital One lounge access and unlimited access to Priority Pass lounges
  • Hertz President's Circle status**
  • Global Entry/TSA PreCheck application fee credit
  • Auto rental collision damage waiver*
  • Extended warranty protection*

*For Capital One products listed on this page, some of the above benefits are provided by Visa® or Mastercard® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply.

**Upon enrollment, accessible through the Capital One website or mobile app, eligible cardholders will remain at upgraded status level through December 31, 2024. Please note, enrolling through the normal Hertz Gold Plus Rewards enrollment process (e.g., at Hertz.com) will not automatically detect a cardholder as being eligible for the program, and cardholders will not be automatically upgraded to the applicable status tier. Additional terms apply.

Annual fee : $395 (see rates and fees )

The Capital One Venture X is great for bookings made through Capital One Travel and flat-rate, hassle-free rewards on all other purchases. The card also offers the ability to transfer your miles to 15-plus airline and hotel partners .

The card's $300 annual Capital One travel credit and 10,000-anniversary miles make for great benefits on a yearly basis. The Venture X stands out with the ability to add a number of authorized users at no cost who also receive access to Capital One and Priority Pass lounges with the ability to bring up to two guests each (see rates and fees ).

To learn more, read our full review of the Capital One Venture X .

Citi Strata Premier Card

The Citi Strata Premier often falls under the radar compared to other higher-end travel cards , but any long-term traveler should look into it.

Welcome bonus : Earn 70,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 in the first three months. A higher offer may be available through Citi.com.

Welcome bonus value: $1,260

  • 10 ThankYou points per dollar spent on hotels, car rentals and attractions (excluding air travel) when booking through CitiTravel.com
  • 3 points per dollar on air travel, hotels, gas stations, EV charging stations, restaurants and supermarkets
  • Extended warranty protection and purchase protection
  • Redeem points directly for airfare through CitiTravel.com or transfer points to 20 airline and hotel partners
  • Annual $100 statement credit per calendar year for a single hotel stay of $500 or more (excluding taxes and fees) booked through CitiTravel.com or by calling Citi
  • Add an authorized user to your account at no additional cost

Annual fee : $95

The Citi Strata Premier features a 24-month extended warranty benefit that can be especially useful when living on the road, as nomadic life can take a toll on electronics and other gear. Plus, it carries a fantastic earning rate for a nice blend of everyday and travel-related purchases.

It's also much cheaper than many of the other cards on this list, so if you're traveling on a budget it may be the right card for you.

To learn more, read our full review of the Citi Strata Premier .

Apply here: Citi Strata Premier

American Express Green Card

Although it's often overshadowed by other American Express cards, the Amex Green is a well-rounded card to consider if you're a digital nomad.

Welcome bonus : Earn 40,000 bonus points after spending $3,000 in purchases in the first six months of account opening.

Welcome bonus value: $800

  • 3 points per dollar on restaurants worldwide and travel, including transit
  • 1 point per dollar spent on everything else.
  • Up to $199 per calendar year in statement credits when you pay for your Clear Plus membership with your card*
  • Up to $100 in statement credits per calendar year when you use your card to purchase lounge access through LoungeBuddy *
  • Transfer points to airline and hotel partners
  • Travel protections, including trip delay insurance** when you purchase an eligible round-trip ticket with your card and secondary car rental loss and damage insurance***
  • Shopping protections, including purchase protection** and extended warranty**

*Enrollment required for select benefits.

**Eligibility and Benefit level varies by Card. Terms, Conditions and Limitations Apply. Please visit americanexpress.com/benefitsguide for more details. Underwritten by New Hampshire Insurance Company, an AIG Company.

***Eligibility and benefit level varies by card. Not all vehicle types or rentals are covered, and geographic restrictions apply. Terms, conditions and limitations apply. Visit americanexpress.com/benefitsguide for details. Policies are underwritten by AMEX Assurance Company. Coverage is offered through American Express Travel Related Services Company, Inc.

Annual fee : $150

The Amex Green earns 3 points per dollar on travel, including transit, which can provide great value to frequent travelers. The Amex Green's annual fee is slightly higher than the Citi Strata Premier , but the Amex Green has annual statement credits that can more than offset the $150 annual fee if you're able to get significant value from a Clear Plus membership and LoungeBuddy.

Airline and hotel credit cards

If you frequently fly a particular airline or stay at a particular hotel brand, it may make sense to carry a cobranded credit card from the airline or hotel.

These cards provide many benefits, which can range from free checked bags to extra award availability to bonus-earning to elite status.

Take a look at TPG's guide to airline credit cards to see if the benefits provided by any cobranded airline credit cards make sense for your travel. Many of the cards provide a free checked bag, which can save you big time when you fly frequently — especially if you tend to purchase basic economy fares .

Even if you only check a bag a few times each year, cards such as the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card , Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® and United℠ Explorer Card can pay off.

Check out TPG's guide to hotel credit cards to see if signing up for a hotel cobranded credit card makes sense for your travel style.

For example, I've gotten excellent value from the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card . Since I often stay at IHG hotels, the benefits that come with this card easily make up for the $99 annual fee.

Notable benefits include up to 26 points per dollar earned at IHG properties, an anniversary night at an eligible IHG property worth up to 40,000 points after each account anniversary, automatic Platinum Elite status and a fourth-night reward when redeeming IHG points for stays of three nights or longer.

I also love the benefits that come with Hilton Diamond Elite status from the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card , but the card's $550 annual fee may be difficult to justify if you don't stay at Hilton properties frequently.

The information for the Hilton Aspire Amex card and Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Business credit cards

Many long-term travelers and digital nomads have businesses that they're running from the road. These travelers may find it useful to have one or more business cards as well.

One business card that's particularly well-suited to long-term travelers and digital nomads is the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card .

How To Get Late Checkout at a Hotel (And Cards To Get It With)

Table of Contents

What is late checkout, how can you get late checkout, final thoughts.

We may be compensated when you click on product links, such as credit cards, from one or more of our advertising partners. Terms apply to the offers below. See our  Advertising Policy for more about our partners, how we make money, and our rating methodology. Opinions and recommendations are ours alone.

We’ve all had those moments where an 11 a.m. hotel checkout feels impossible.

Maybe it’s the day after a destination wedding where you overindulged and got in late. Or maybe you’re on vacation and simply want a little extra time to lounge around and get your suitcase together.

Either way, there are certain things you can do to almost guarantee or at least increase your chances of getting a late checkout. From scoring elite status to paying extra or simply asking politely, we’ll detail the best ways to get a late checkout at a hotel.

Late checkout is when you’re able to check out later than the specified checkout time .

Most standard checkout times for hotels are from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m . This means you have to vacate your room and leave your room key by this time; otherwise, you risk additional charges. Hotels will usually phone your room if you haven’t checked out by the required time to remind you. Most hotels have a grace period of 30 to 60 minutes after the official checkout time if you’re running late.

Hotel Keys

You can get late checkout in a variety of different ways. Let’s run through some of those options.

Get Late Checkout by Asking for It

One of the easiest ways to get late checkout (for free) is simply to ask for it. Obviously, the answer depends on a number of factors, including the hotel’s policy, how friendly your front desk agent is, the right housekeeping staff, and whether the hotel has enough free rooms to allow for it. Here are tips on asking for late checkout — and getting it:

The nicer you ask, the more likely you are to get late checkout. Being friendly is an easy way to get your checkout extended.

Make Your Request Reasonable

Asking for a short extra period of time may increase your chances of late checkout. For example, if checkout time is usually noon, and you ask for a checkout time of 12:30 p.m. or 1 p.m., it probably isn’t a big deal for you to get it, assuming the hotel isn’t at completely full capacity or short on housekeeping staff. However, asking to stay in the room until 7 p.m. is probably pushing your luck. Reasonable requests are more likely to be granted.

Explain Why

I was once staying at a hotel in Valencia, Spain, with several members of my family, and my elderly aunt came down with a fever. Our train home wasn’t until the evening, and because she was ill (and I’d spoken with a particularly understanding staff member), the hotel allowed her to remain in the room until later that afternoon.

When my son was an infant, a kind hotel staff member at a boutique property in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, allowed us to remain in the room later than planned so he could nap in his crib before we embarked on a long international journey home.

If you have a good reason (and the staff is accommodating and occupancy rates allow for it), you may just get it.

Don’t Ask Too Early

Asking during the check-in process or a few days in advance may not help your case, though you can always do so. In most cases, staff don’t know if you can remain in the room until the day you’re checking out. At the earliest, they may find out the night before you’re scheduled to check out. When it comes to late checkout, last-minute, day-of requests may be more likely to be granted (assuming you don’t hold elite status, which I’ll dig into further below).

If there’s space to do so when you’re booking online, you may want to add a late checkout request there, too, so the hotel can see it on your reservation. You can also mention it upon checking in, but staff may ask you to ask again the morning of checkout.

Ask in Person

If you’re hurriedly tossing items into your suitcase and need an extra 20 minutes, a phone call to the front desk probably isn’t a big deal. But if you’re looking to spend longer in your room, it’s worth a chat at reception live and in person . A staff member is more likely to grant you a late checkout during a face-to-face conversation, especially if it’s a big ask, like remaining in the room for several additional hours. (Again, remember to be nice.)

Checking out late is an enjoyable perk, but so is early check-in. Here’s how to check-in early for your next hotel stay.

Get Late Checkout by Paying for It

AluaSoul Costa Malaga elevator late checkout cost

If you wish to remain in your hotel room significantly longer than the usual checkout time, you may have to pay for it.

Some hotels have policies that have specific pricing for late checkout (often based on hours), while some may charge day or half-day rates . If you’re really desperate for a late checkout but the hotel says it’s not possible, ask how much it costs to stay in the room longer. They may change their tune if you’re willing to pay.

Get Late Checkout by Holding Elite Status

This is probably the best and easiest way to get late checkout because, in some cases, you’re entitled to it as an elite status perk. Late checkout is often a perk awarded to brand loyalists , so if you’re after consistent late checkout with a particular brand, obtaining elite status might be worth it.

Just know that in most cases (even with top elite status holders), there are no guarantees, and this benefit is subject to availability unless explicitly guaranteed.

Below are some of the hotel loyalty programs that offer elite checkout for elite loyalty members. Do note that, unlike staying at hotels that don’t have loyalty programs (or for travelers who don’t hold elite status), elite status holders may have to request late checkout when they reserve the hotel or when they check-in. In most cases, checkout time is based on the elite membership tier or level.

Check out our guide to the best credit cards for complimentary hotel elite status !

Marriott Bonvoy

  • Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite: Late checkout is based on availability. Call the front desk the morning of checkout to ask.
  • Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite: Status holders get a 2 p.m. late checkout. Call the front desk the morning of checkout to request.
  • Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite and above: These elite members have until 4 p.m. Request this when making a reservation through central reservations, at check-in, via the mobile app (where available), or at any time during a stay.
  • Not all Marriott locations offer late checkout for elite members. This benefit isn’t available at Marriott Vacation Club; Marriott Grand Residence Club; Sheraton Vacation Club; Westin Vacation Club; The Phoenician Residences, a Luxury Collection Residence Club, Scottsdale; Ritz-Carlton Reserve; or MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy.

Certain credit cards offer Marriott Bonvoy elite status . Get Silver Elite status with the Marriott Bonvoy Bold ®  Credit Card . Obtain Gold Elite status with the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express ®  Card , the Marriott Bonvoy Business ®  American Express ®  Card , the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful™ Credit Card , and The Platinum Card ®  from American Express . Get top-tier Platinum Elite status with the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant ®  American Express ®  Card .

IHG One Rewards

All IHG One Rewards loyalty program members, including Club Members, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond, can request a 2 p.m. late checkout, though it is subject to availability. Certain IHG co-branded credit cards offer complimentary elite status, such as the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card , which offers Platinum Elite status. However, it only takes being a general Club Member to access the possibility of a 2 p.m. checkout. So when it comes to picking an IHG credit card, complimentary elite status awards you with many other perks but won’t help you further with late checkout.

Hilton Honors

Hilton doesn’t guarantee late checkout requests of any kind . The company website says that Hilton Honors members can request late checkout but that it’s subject to availability . It’s always worth asking at whatever Hilton hotel you’re staying at, as some individual Hilton properties may have their own structures for late checkout for holders of elite status.

World of Hyatt

World of Hyatt elite members have late checkout, subject to availability (and it may not be available at all Hyatt hotel and resort locations). Discoverists and Explorists may request a 2 p.m. checkout, and Globalists may request 4 p.m.

The World of Hyatt Credit Card offers cardholders complimentary World of Hyatt Discoverist status for as long as their account is open. Other benefits include elite night credits and a Category 1-4 free night certificate . As noted above, you get late checkout (subject to availability) with Hyatt Discoverist status.

Radisson Rewards

Radisson’s website states that “hotel policies regarding early check-in (generally before 2 p.m.) or late checkout (generally after 12 p.m.) vary by location and by hotel.” If you want to request a late checkout, the company advises that you call the hotel directly prior to your arrival to make any necessary arrangements. Direct hotel phone numbers can be found on your confirmation email or on the hotel information page.

If you hold either Premium or VIP Radisson Rewards elite status (the second and third out of 3 elite status tiers), you can request late checkout, which is subject to availability .

ALL – Accor Live Limitless

ALL has 5 elite status tiers: Classic (as soon as you join), Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond members have access to late checkout.

Choice Privileges

Choice’s FAQ section explains the brand’s stance on late checkout:

“ Late checkout requests are at the hotel’s discretion and based on availability. They also are subject to a surcharge . Special consideration may be made for Elite Choice Privileges members requesting a late checkout time, but it isn’t guaranteed.”

Wyndham Rewards

Wyndham offers late checkout as a perk for its Gold, Platinum, and Diamond tier status members . It’s provided upon request and subject to availability. It’s best to ask for it at check-in.

Get Late Checkout by Having the Right Credit Cards

I already mentioned some credit cards that can indirectly lead to late checkout. Using a credit card to earn hotel elite status means you can benefit from programs that offer late checkout as a status perk. However, certain credit cards also offer access to hotel booking programs and platforms that allow you to book properties that offer late checkout as a benefit.

Amex: American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts

The following credit cards allow you to book hotels part of Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) via AmexTravel.com :

  • Amex Platinum card
  • The Business Platinum Card ®  from American Express
  • Centurion ®  Card from American Express

Hotels that are part of Amex FHR offer cardholders the following benefits:

  • Room upgrade upon arrival (subject to availability)
  • Daily breakfast for 2 people
  • Noon check-in (subject to availability)
  • Guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • A unique property amenity valued at $100 (spa or food and beverage credit)

As you can see, this program is one of the few that allows guaranteed 4 p.m. checkout, meaning if you really want a guarantee you’ll be able to stay in your hotel room for longer, getting one of these cards to access FHR hotel bookings is a surefire way to get late checkout.

Chase: The Edit by Chase Travel

This freshly rebranded program offers the following cardholders benefits at hundreds of participating hotels:

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve ®
  • Chase United cardholders (these credit card members must book here)
  • J.P. Morgan Reserve Card

These are the benefits cardholders can obtain when booking hotels through The Edit:

  • Daily breakfast for 2
  • $100 property credit (includes dining, spa, or other activities at the property)
  • Room upgrade at check-in, if available
  • Early check-in, late checkout, if available

While this program does offer late checkout, it’s subject to availability and doesn’t specify a time, so booking through this program may not be the best choice if you’re looking for a guaranteed late checkout or a specific time.

Capital One: Capital One Premier Collection

Cardholders of the following 2 cards can book Premier Collection hotels and vacation rentals on   Capital One Travel :

  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card
  • Capital One Venture X Business Card

Here are the benefits these Capital One Venture X cardholders get when booking a Premier Collection hotel:

  • 10X  Capital One miles  per $1 spent on Premier Collection bookings
  • $100 experience credit (varies by hotel)
  • Complimentary breakfast for 2
  • Room upgrade (when available)
  • Early check-in and late checkout (when available)

When booking a Premier Collection vacation rental, Capital One Venture X cardholders get the following:

  • $100 experience credit for amenities, like in-home chef meals, prearrival groceries, mid-stay cleans, and more

Although late checkout is subject to availability, the fact that cardholders can obtain the benefit through both specific hotels and vacation rentals is great.

How Late Can You Really Check Out?

The latest posted available checkout time we’ve seen from hotel brands is usually 4 p.m. However, if you are paying an additional day rate, have an extenuating circumstance or good reason, or happen to chat with really amenable reception staff, we have heard reports of travelers vacating the room even later.

For example, Juan Ruiz , compliance editor and content contributor for Upgraded Points, was able to check out as late as 7 p.m. on a visit to the Park Hyatt Dubai , thanks to his Hyatt Globalist status.

Chris Hassan , social media and brand manager for Upgraded Points, is also a Hyatt Globalist. He was proactively offered a 7 p.m. checkout at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa because he had a late flight.

And the most generous late checkout we’ve heard of so far is from Upgraded Points contributor and Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite Ryan Smith . He was told, “Stay as long as you want” at the Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, because he had an 11 p.m. flight. (He also got to use his $100 on-property credit for booking through Amex FHR to charge his taxi rides to his room.)

However, in most cases, scoring a checkout time this late is rare, so if you’re planning to rely on late checkout, know that you may only have until 2 p.m. or 4 p.m. Or, you can always aim for Hyatt Globalist status and hope for the best!

Of course, late checkouts can go wrong, too. Upgraded Points contributor Dan Miller was at a London hotel that proactively offered him a 2 p.m. late checkout, only for housekeeping to walk in on him in the room and his key cards to stop working. Know that sometimes when you get a late checkout, you will need to stop at reception for a new key.

What To Do if You Can’t Get Late Checkout

Hotel Lobby

Almost all hotels offer a safe space for you to store your luggage and go about your day. Many also will allow you to enjoy the hotel’s facilities — things like the pool, lounge, lobby, gym, or other common areas.

You could also consider booking a hotel room for day use only, though you will have to pay for this. Some hotels also have courtesy rooms where you can book a time to return to the hotel and access a room for an allotted period of time where you can have a quick shower or refresh before picking up your bags or heading to the airport.

Late checkout is almost never fully guaranteed and is usually subject to availability. If you’re hoping to get a late checkout, you might want to consider applying for some of the credit cards mentioned, obtaining hotel elite status, or even asking nicely so that you’ll be able to stay in your room just a little bit longer.

However, it’s always a good idea to have a Plan B in case you can’t get a late checkout, as you can never fully predict hotel occupancy or other factors that may come into play.
