About Karkloof Canopy Tour

Warm summers and temperate to cool winters make Howick and its mother province of KwaZulu-Natal ideal for visitors all year round. The gorgeous Natal Midlands landscapes are very special, infusing their spectators with a sense of peace and awe. Appreciating this pretty countryside is recommended, but doing it from the elevated ziplining tours of the Karkloof make it an absolute must.

Situated in the Karkloof Nature Reserve , this is a one-of-a-kind eco-experience that is all about fun and adventure. It takes visitors gliding from tree to tree in the safety of a harness, through the second-largest indigenous forest in the country. Platforms have been put around the trees (using a tension system that does not damage the beautiful trunk), and steel cables dangle between these, allowing visitors to slide between towering trees at canopy level, while drinking in the views of the emerald-green valley below.

After some exhilarating aerial rides, stop at the impressive waterfall, which boasts a height of some 15 metres, for a refreshing splash.

The Karkloof Nature Reserve has plenty of wildlife to speak of. Samango monkeys, emerald cuckoos, the Karkloof blue butterfly, duikers, and narina trogons are all part of the local fauna. You may even spot some endangered Cape parrots and the spectacular Knysna loerie.

The Karkloof Canopy Tour comprises 12 platforms and 10 slides, the highest of which is about 40 metres above the ground. It takes around two hours to complete and is suitable for everyone between the ages of five and 80 years of age. After the tour, the group can enjoy refreshments and a light meal as they compare tales of hairy heights and magnificent sights.

CANOPY TOUR – KARKLOOF

The Karkloof Canopy Tour® has been built in a spectacular valley of the mist belt podocarpus Karkloof Forest Reserve.

The Karkloof Canopy Tour® has been built in a spectacular valley of the mistbelt podacarpus Karkloof Forest Reserve. The Karkloof Canopy Tour consists of 12 platforms and 10 zip-line slides, the longest of which is 200m! A tour lasts approximately two hours, this is a safe, fun adventure for people between the ages of 6 and 80+ and includes refreshments during the tour.

The Karkloof Canopy Tour begins with a detailed safety briefing followed by a ‘Kitting up’ session where full body harness, pulleys, and climbing equipment are put on and checked for safety. A short scenic 4×4 drive to the top of the Karkloof valley and it is time to monkey around! From the start on the launch platform, a new world unfolds as one gently glides on a steel cable to the first platform. All groups are escorted through the forest canopy by a lead guide and a safety guide to ensure your safety as you slide from tree to tree. The platforms are built high up in the forest canopy and all offer different views of the surrounding forest, a magnificent 20m waterfall, clear sparkling forest stream and across the expansive Karkloof valley far below.

Spend a couple of minutes relaxing on the platforms while your guides enthusiastically explain the ecology of the forest – pointing out different trees and the magnificent giant ferns way below. The bird life is incredible. This includes the opportunity of spotting Emerald Cuckoos, Knysna Turaco, a wide variety of raptors and if you are lucky, the elusive Narina Trogon or endangered Cape Parrots. The forest is also home to a variety of mammals, but it is the loud calls and fearsome tree swinging of the Samango monkeys that you will remember best.

How often do you get the opportunity to zip at breakneck speeds through a beautiful forest? And to make it even more enticing, this forest just happens to be one of the larger mist belt forests in South Africa, boasting a huge number of endemic species of fauna and flora! Words & pics by Rowan Buhrmann

This magnificent forest is located within the Karkloof Nature Reserve  just outside Howick in KwaZulu-Natal . And thanks to the team at Canopy Tour SA, we are able to experience what most of us would have left up to the resident Samango monkeys. Thankfully, the Karkloof Canopy Tour has proudly been introducing us land-lovers to the ways of the forest dwelling, branch-swinging Samango monkeys since 2003.

This wasn’t my first experience of the Karkloof Canopy Tour , as I had previously done this tour with my family five years ago. Being a young, adventure seeking teen, my first visit was all about speeding through the trees and having my breath taken away by the sheer height above the canopy. However, having grown up (slightly), this second trip into the treetops meant so much more.

We started our safety briefing at about 11:30ish on what was a gloriously sunny day in Howick. I remember sitting down in the wood cabin wondering if we would be back before lunch because I was already starting to feel hungry. But that was pretty much the last time my stomach featured! After the safety briefing, we immediately made our way down to a waiting 4×4 which took us on a scenic trip up into the forest above.

The trip up into the forest gave us time to chat with our guides, with Robs (one of our guides) informing us that this was his first time and he was still in training… This prompted a couple of nervous laughs as we were trying to determine if he was being serious or not. Thankfully not though! He had actually been involved in the canopy tours since its inception way back, making us all feel that much more at ease. This is the strategy in all the Canopy Tour operations – they employ local guides and train them in all things from ecology to safety.

Upon arrival in the forest, we leapt off the 4×4 and with much (nervous) anticipation, began the short walk deeper into the Karkloof forest. Amazingly the first platform, aptly named the ‘Rabbit hole’, wasn’t even visible from the path below. This trend has been meticulously followed through on all platforms, with the forest trees taking first priority (after our safety of course!). The guides gave us a great demonstration about how to handle the slides and how we wouldn’t go tumbling down into the canopy below thanks to the strong safety line!

The rabbit hole was a great introductory slide for those of us who were a bit nervous, as it wasn’t too fast or too long. The next slide, called ‘Last Chance’, was a different story! Before setting off along this slide, our guides asked if any of us were chickening out, because from here on out, there was no turning back… Thankfully no one decided to take the walk back, as Last Chance was a blast! At 150m long, it took us across a valley in the forest which seemed to drop a 100m’s below. With views across the valley in the direction of Howick to our right, and the dense forest below and to our left, we were now well and truly ‘swallowed up’ by this dark green living mass called the Karkloof forest.

There was something magical the second time around. Knowing what to expect with each slide, I had more time to actually take in everything around us. It was at the third platform that I was really taken aback by everything… Perched on the edge of a cliff, with the platform seemingly just hanging off the rock face, I felt like I was part of the forest, like one of the many ferns making these rocks their home. What a privilege it is being able to get this close to some of the wonders of the Karkloof forest.

The guides were super clued up too – informing us about the amazing (and OLD) yellowwood and stinkwood trees that the canopy tour was built around. We even had the opportunity to get up close and personal with one of them! At about the halfway point, we enjoyed a snack break high up at the start of the somewhat ironically named slide, ‘shorty’. But I will leave you with this, and say no more about the slides, as you really do need to try this out.

‘ This the strategy in all the Canopy Tour operations – they employ local guides and train them in all things from ecology to safety ’

At the end of the tour we had a chilled walk back through the forest, listening to the chirping of birds, the gentle rustling of leaves and the peaceful trickle of the stream – a great ‘wind down’ after our adrenalin pumping adventure! Getting back to the base, we were invited to a light lunch on the veranda… we hardly noticed the forest nearby or the kids having fun playing on the lawn – we were too engrossed in excited chatter, reliving our epic adventure.

And what an adventure this day was. We met some awesome people and had an absolute ball of a time. This is what memories are made of!

The Karkloof Canopy Tour is a unique eco-experience that takes people on a 3-hr adventure through the magnificent Karkloof indigenous forest. The canopy tour involves traversing from one platform to another along a steel cable suspended up to 30m above the forest floor. The tour comprises seven platforms and eight slides that zig-zag down a pristine forested valley. The scenery and birdlife is spectacular and professional guides provide interesting facts about the forest ecology during the tour.

Construction of the Karkloof Canopy Tour has been done in accordance with strict civil engineering standards. The system was designed and constructed by Tree Top Tours, creators of the internationally acclaimed Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour on the Garden Route . A full environment impact study was undertaken to ensure that the forest ecology would not be harmed in any way. The subsequent environmental management plan was submitted to and then approved by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism before construction began.

The tour begins with a detailed safety briefing followed by a 'kitting up' session where full body harness, pulleys and climbing equipment is put on and safety-checked. A short scenic drive to the top of the Karkloof valley and it is time to monkey around!

From the start on the launch platform a new world unfolds as one gently glides on a steel cable to the first platform. All groups are escorted through the forest canopy by a lead guide and a follow guide to ensure your safety as you slide from tree to tree. The platforms are built high up in the forest canopy and all offer different views of the surrounding forest, a magnificent 20m waterfall, clear sparkling forest stream and across the expansive Karkloof valley far below.

You can join us for an abseil down a 54-metre waterfall deep in the Karkloof Nature Reserve . Anyone can abseil and you need no previous experience. Our expert team looks after you while you look at the spectacular view of the Karkloof valley.

Our sturdy 4x4 takes everyone up the mountain to the abseil site. After a short walk through natural grassland, you can look down the Nyumbakazi waterfall and rockpool glistening deep in tree-enclosed ravine. Careful preparation readies you to sail down the cliff like a regular rock lizard! Adrenalin levels subside during the walk back to base. This is an ideal opportunity to spy the Longcrested Eagle or a Samango monkey laughing at you shyly from the trees.

Karkloof Canopy Tour

Karkloof Canopy Tour

There is something deeply special about indigenous forests. The lush luminosity of life played out in near-perpetual shade, the warm dank scent of sweaty growth and languorous decay. Open on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, the second largest indigenous forest in South Africa situated at Karkloof 18 kms inland from Howick comes alive with people of all ages and sizes experiencing a true Tarzan and Jane Adventure, on slides of up to 200m long which take them amongst the birds, monkeys, trees and plants of this magnificent forest.

The system has been designed and constructed by a civil engineer. During the tour two or more trained guides ensure the safety of each group while describing interesting facts about the ecology and life in the forest.

The experience starts with a briefing session at the Karkloof Canopy Tour base camp. You will also be kitted out with your harness, safety helmet and sliding glove where opportunity would be given to ask your guides questions. Should you wish, the option to go tandem with one of your qualified guides is an option open to all, he then becomes your ABS brakes and all you do is enjoy the ride. After briefing you will be taken up the mountain in a 4×4 with a short 60m walk to the first platform.

Can I do this? Of course the answer is a resounding YES! This is for everyone with a sense of adventure and a love of beauty should come and experience our Tarzan & Jane Adventure. Ideal for team building, childrens parties, anniversaries and wooing of friend and foe!

We Love what we do

It goes without saying that we believe that we have the best job in the world. Our office is an AERIAL PLAYGROUND of giant trees, mountains and waterfalls. It’s where we find PEACE AND EXCITEMENT in equal measure. And every day we get to share and experience it with NEW PEOPLE FROM ALL CORNERS of the world. Let us show you why we love it.

History of the Canopy Tour®

Canopy tours originated in the lush rainforests of Costa Rica where adventurous biologists, desperate to study the diversity of animal life that habituates the upper canopy level of forests, devised a system of cables and platforms that would allow them to explore this previously inaccessible ecosystem.

It wasn’t long before this developed into a breathtaking eco-tourism activity

that not only allowed people to enter and experience the upper realm of a rainforest, but raised awareness of the plight and beauty of the world’s endangered indigenous forests.

platform with guides and adventure enthusiasts on top

Construction of Canopy Tours® South Africa has been done in accordance with strict civil engineering standards.

Each system has been designed and built by a Canopy Tours® engineer, starting with the canopy tour in the cloud forests of Costa Rica.

This led to the search for South Africa’s largest trees and the opening in 2001 of the internationally acclaimed Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour® on the Garden Route near Storms River.

There are now seven official Canopy Tours ® across South Africa. The latest to be created was the Cape Canopy Tour in Elgin, which Lonely Planet guide declared to be second on their list of the ‘hottest new activities around the world’.

Environmental impact studies are undertaken prior to construction to ensure that the canopy tours do not harm the surrounding forest ecology in any way.

Strict environmental management plans have been adhered to and the construction of South Africa’s Canopy Tours® has been carried out with the approval of the Department of Water Affairs & Forestry as well as the Department of Environmental Affairs & Tourism.

At Canopy Tours® South Africa we are proud to work closely with the communities within which we operate.

Each Canopy Tour® site is located in rural areas where we have helped to uplift local communities by training locals to become guides; thereby providing a vital source of income and employment.

What to Expect

The Canopy Tour starts with a safety briefing at the canopy office. Here your guides will first demonstrate how to slide on the cables and the safety procedures to be followed on the tour, before kitting you up with full body harness, pulley, climbing equipment and safety helmet.

canopy tour guide driving a group of clients

Your group will then be transported in an open vehicle to the start of the canopy tour.

From the moment you launch off the first platform, a new world unfolds as you slide on a steel cable across to the next viewpoint. Once you arrive at the platform we encourage you to stop for a while and enjoy the view while your guide points out interesting features or facts about the surrounding ecology.

two canopy tour group escorts

All groups are escorted by a lead guide and safety guide at all times.

Your safety is paramount and we have strict procedures in place to ensure that you are constantly connected to either the cable or the platform. Each tour lasts between 2 – 4 hours, depending which particular Canopy Tour it is and how many people there are in your group.

PS. There is some amazing stuff to see, don’t forget to bring your camera!

Frequently Asked Questions

We welcome any questions you might have before you book a Canopy Tour and will happily address any of your concerns. Here are the answers to some of the common questions that we receive.

Q. Is it scary?

Many people are nervous about the prospect of their first Canopy Tour® and some are just plain scared of heights. For those who don’t think they can do it on their own, we offer a tandem tour which allows you to take in the whole experience while safely attached to a guide who controls your speed and ensures your safety. Canopy Tours are certainly not a high adrenaline activity like bungy jumping and we find that most people, even those who are slightly nervous at the start, quickly adapt to the concept and have no problem at all on the slides.

Q. Who should go on a Canopy Tour?

Canopy Tours are ideal for the nature lovers, individual thrill seeker, family getaways, group or student excursions and corporate team building events.

Q. How many people in a group?

Maximum of 9 people per group. Bookings for 10 or more people will simply be split into smaller groups that follow one behind the other along the canopy tour. Larger group bookings of up to 150 people per day for corporate and team building events are available on request.

Q. When is it open?

In general Canopy Tours depart between 8am and 3pm, but these hours are often extended upon demand at summertime. Tours can depart every 30 minutes and are conducted in most weather conditions. Please book in advance to secure your place!

Q. How long does it take?

Each tour lasts between 2 – 4 hours, depending which particular Canopy Tour it is and how many people there are in your group. Have a look at the About page on the website to understand exactly what happens on a canopy tour.

Q. What do we need to wear or bring?

You should wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe footwear. Open sandals are not suitable as they will simply fall off. Shorts or long pants are fine but mini-skirts are not. Running shoes, takkies, and veldskoene are perfect and strap-on sandals will do. Don’t forget to bring your camera as there are many excellent photo opportunities along the way. And if it looks rainy we recommend you bring a raincoat and/or change of dry clothing.

Q. How safe is it?

All the Canopy Tours® have been designed and built by a qualified civil engineer. Each group is escorted by two guides with a lead guide and safety guide monitoring your progress at all times. Your safety is paramount and we have strict procedures in place to ensure that you are constantly connected to either the cable or the platform. We use full body harnesses and all our pulleys, carabineers and other equipment carry standard safety certification ratings. All that’s left for you to worry about is having a good time!

Q. How old or fit do I need to be?

Our brochures say that anyone between 7 and 70 is welcome on the canopy tour. However the current youngest and oldest client records stand with a 4 year old and an 85 year old! The Canopy Tour® is not very physically demanding and as long as you are able to walk out of the forest over uneven ground we will probably be able to provide you with the Canopy Tour® experience. Those who do not have the ability to regulate their speed on the slides will be able to go in tandem along each cable with one of our trained guides. If you have a medical condition or disability please enquire with our office staff before booking a tour.

Q. What if I’m scared of heights?

It is quite normal to be afraid of heights. Many of our clients arrive at the canopy tour a little nervous and are often quite anxious on the first slide. The experience may even be a bit scary. But for most of you by the end of the tour these fears will have disappeared and been replaced with an immensely rewarding sense of achievement. You can even take home your own Canopy Tour completion certificate if you need to prove it to your friends!

Q. What if I weigh 150kgs?

Then your nervous guide will probably suggest you take a short stroll around the forest instead. Our recommended weight limit is in fact 120kg.

Q. What if I’m pregnant?

Congratulations! But in the best interests of you and your baby we would prefer to err on the side of caution, and recommend you return to do a Canopy Tour once you have welcomed the new arrival. Until then, take it easy and try get as much sleep and rest as possible!

Customer Reviews

This trail is STEEP. It's well-maintained and lots of fun with a beautiful waterfall at the top but don't underestimate it. You need to use the ropes provided to get up and down. - Claire

We enjoyed our visit to the forest, the experience of walking under the trees and listening to the birds was absolutely wonderful. We did the Woodcutters route which was quite challenging in parts. I would like to mention that parts of the steeper parts were quite sandy and difficult to walk through. Some logs across the paths would stop the sand slipping down the slopes. At the crossing of the river it was quite dangerous as the rocks were slippery , the bigger rocks difficult to climb onto and a small insecure piece of wood misplaced. For older and the younger guests thus part was scary!! However we have recommended the forest walks to other people and we will definitely return to do other walks through the green door. - Millicent

Thank you for the most fantastic day out! We so appreciated the comprehensive briefing regarding the trails on offer prior to our departure through the door which helped us choose our route. Our 'group' of 2 adults, an energetic 4 year old and an inquisitive 9 year old absolutely loved looking for fairies and pixies in amongst the quirky 'decorations', quotes and perfectly placed benches along the way, and having the stream gurgling along was a brilliant accompaniment to the children's excited chatter! The effort and energy that has clearly gone into maintaining the trails was humbling - we had an amazing time just 'being'... Hearing the whoops of joy of the canopy tourists was an added extra and certainly contributed to our experience. We will most certainly be back! Thank you, once again, and congratulations! - Peter

We did all the trails on the Sunday - Phew! Would definitely cut the off-cambers level on the new trails as they are really slippery and especially on the red trail (which we did en route back) and literally had to go on hands and knees to scale the trail - or perhaps add ropes here. The ropes really added a more challenging aspect and a thrill over the slippery sections. The purple route atop could be a bit better marked - we just walked until the trail petered out. The green route was beautiful and we loved all the unusual and fun elements added into the forest for that Alice in Wonderland feel. The green door is a fabulous concept!! All in all, is was a tough but very satisfying day. - Kerry

The most amazing experience, calm, winter chill in the air. Sun peaking through the trees gave an amazing light show. - Simon
