The Best Galápagos Island Cruises

A cruise is one of the best ways to see all that this remote Ecuadorian archipelago has to offer.

galapagos island luxury cruise

There's no better way to cover ground on your trip to the Galápagos Islands than to sail on a multiday cruise.

Galápagos National Park regulates the number and type of tourist boats that are allowed to operate in the famously biodiverse area. This helps with overcrowding, conserving the environment, and minimizing stress on the amazing wildlife of the Galápagos. Many tourist boats in the area offer five- to seven-day all-inclusive itineraries that are strictly monitored by the national park officials. There are also cruises operating illegally, so you have to take care when choosing a tour.

To help you find a cruise fit for your wildest dreams, we've rounded up 14 of the best options, whether you prefer a small ship or bigger vessel, an action-packed itinerary or a casual drift around this remote archipelago in the Pacific.

5 Things to do in Galápagos

Small galápagos cruises.

Most of the cruise ships in the Galápagos Islands carry fewer than 20 passengers. These vessels, typically motor yachts, can't provide some of the luxurious amenities available on larger ships, but they do ensure personalized service, a more intimate experience, and quicker trips on and off the boat.

Quasar Grace

The 18-passenger Grace was once owned by Grace Kelly. She and Prince Rainier spent part of their honeymoon on the motor yacht, and now you can sleep in their bedroom, the Grace Kelly Suite, which is one of nine rooms aboard. The ship sails three routes, taking eight to 15 days, and guests get plenty of snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, and panga rides along the way.

Ecoventura Letty

The Letty is one of the best full-service motor yachts in the Galápagos for value. This 20-passenger boat is a solid option with great service and comfortable accommodations. A trip on the Letty promises a 10 guest-per-guide ratio, as well as dinner with the captain. You get a choice between two seven-day itineraries, each including opportunities to snorkel, hike, and learn about the local wildlife from knowledgeable guides.

Ecoventura Origin

The 20-passenger Origin is like a floating boutique hotel. All 10 cabins are on the same deck, there’s an open-bar policy, and Wi-Fi is available on board. A unique hull design means this ship is also one of the most fuel-efficient in the Galápagos. Like the Letty , Ecoventura's Origin sails two routes around the archipelago, each lasting eight days and providing plenty of chances to get up close to nature.

Medium Galápagos Ships

If you're stuck between whether to book your cruise on a small ship or a large vessel — both have their advantages — one of these medium-sized boats accommodating 20 to 50 passengers could be the best of both worlds. You'll enjoy more space, a larger group to mingle with, and sometimes a wider variety of activities and services to accommodate more people.

Quasar Evolution

The 32-passenger Evolution was designed by Adriana Hoyos, a furniture and interior designer renowned for her work on luxury hotels across the Americas. Its cabins have a contemporary boutique-hotel aesthetic. There are indoor and outdoor lounges, a bar, and a library. Passengers can choose between three itineraries, ranging from eight to 15 days and taking different routes around the Galápagos.

Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic Islander II

All cabins on the 48-passenger National Geographic Islander II have windows, and some even have private patios. The ship offers deck hammocks, Wi-Fi, and food made with ingredients sourced from farms in the Galápagos whenever possible. Itineraries range from seven to 12 days and include cultural experiences in addition to wildlife viewing and water sports.

Large Galápagos Ships

Galápagos National Park officials have set a maximum of 100 passengers per vessel, so these are some of the largest ships in the archipelago. Travelers may opt for a larger-capacity cruise ship for more space (such as bigger hallways and staircases for easier movement around the ship) and increased services like an onboard doctor. The downside of traveling on a large ship is the time it can take to complete transfers by zodiac from the boat to the islands. Also, some areas of the Galápagos may be off limits to larger ships.

Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic Endeavour II

The 96-passenger National Geographic Endeavour II has Wi-Fi, a doctor, SUP gear, a clear-bottom zodiac, a free digital photo kiosk with iMacs, and a spa. Like the Islander II, food brought from the mainland is carefully prepared and packaged to prevent the introduction of invasive species to the Galápagos Islands.

Celebrity Flora

The 100-passenger Celebrity Flora features all of the design elements, amenities, and services of its sibling ships and then some. It has two 1,288-square-foot penthouse suites (the largest in the Galápagos), naturalist-guided stargazing sessions, and outdoor cabanas that you can reserve for a unique glamping experience.

Silversea Silver Origin

The 100-passenger Silver Origin is an all-suite ship with accommodations up to 1,722 square feet, some with in-room espresso machines and mini-bars, private verandas, and butler service. Tips are included in the price. The ship also has a fitness center, a spa, a communal fire pit, and two restaurants. There are more than 100 cruise options, some lasting as long as 18 days.

Galápagos Catamarans

These small boats have a unique hull design, like the dual parallel runners of a sled, that many believe makes catamarans more stable in the water.

Celebrity Xploration

The 16-passenger Celebrity Xploration is arguably the most luxurious catamaran in the Galápagos. Its eight suites and junior suites feature extras like binoculars, personal refrigerators, a pillow menu, and room service. The catamaran cruises two routes, a northern route and a southern route, both lasting seven nights.

Anahi Yacht Catamaran

The Anahi has eight rooms accommodating up to 16 passengers, including two spacious suites. Travelers can expect traditional yacht design details, like polished wooden floors and portrait windows. There are multiple itineraries to choose from, each stopping off at different islands and exploring different parts of the Galápagos. The cruises range in duration from four to 15 days.

Royal Galapagos Cormorant II

The Cormorant II can carry 16 passengers in nine cabins, all with private balconies. Some of the suites even come with walk-in closets and their own Jacuzzi tubs. Travelers can opt for a four- to eight-day cruise with inclusive excursions such as snorkeling, kayaking, and glass-bottom boat tours.

Live-aboard Dive Boats

If you’re a certified scuba diver, a live-aboard dive boat might be for you. These boats are built to accommodate the specific needs (and gear) of divers, and they navigate special routes and itineraries that include top dive sites. The Galápagos is home to whale sharks, hammerhead sharks, spotted eagle rays, manta rays, sunfish, and many other marine creatures.

Explorer Ventures Humboldt Explorer and Tiburon Explorer

Explorer Ventures ' two live-aboard vessels, the Humboldt Explorer and Tiburon Explorer , accommodate 16 passengers each. The Humboldt has a large dive deck, which makes it easier to get into and out of your dive gear. The eight-day excursion includes up to 19 dives and the 11-day excursion includes up to 28.

Galápagos Nortada

The 84-foot Nortada has only four cabins and can sleep eight guests. Passengers can congregate on the bridge, the galley, or in the dining room and lounge. Dive trips last either seven or 14 nights, and itineraries include up to four dives a day.

Galápagos Aggressor III

The Aggressor ships have been cruising around the Galápagos Islands since 1993. The Galápagos Aggressor III accommodates 16 passengers. Charters last a week and include four dives a day plus two land excursions.

Galapagos cruises are the best way to experience the collection of remote, mostly uninhabited islands about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. But cruises to the Galapagos Islands aren’t like cruises anywhere else. The ships here are smaller, with some carrying as few as 16 passengers. There are no water slides, elaborate Broadway shows, casinos, or wild nightclubs. And don’t expect big bus tours in port either.

Galapagos cruises are about experiencing nature and wildlife while limiting environmental impact as much as possible. Ships are built for sustainability, toting items like kayaks, paddleboards, and scuba gear. Itineraries may feature two active excursions a day, limiting downtime on board the ship. Instead of museums and historic sights, you’ll visit uninhabited islands to encounter marine iguanas, sea lions, unspoiled beaches, and the adventures of a lifetime.

Trips to the Galapagos Islands are logistically complicated, making cruises an especially good way to experience the area. Travelers to the Galapagos Islands must first fly to Quito or Guayaquil, Ecuador , for a night before flying to the Galapagos to board their ships. All travelers must also be accompanied by National Parks Guides who can help them navigate these largely undeveloped islands.

Galapagos cruise itineraries are typically a week long and cover a portion of the islands, sometimes more. Here’s everything to know about cruising in the Galapagos, from frequently asked questions to the best Galapagos cruise itineraries to book now.

Best luxury Galapagos cruise

Best galapagos cruise for adventure seekers, best galapagos cruises for solo travelers, best small ship galapagos cruise, best galapagos cruises for families, best galapagos cruise for lifelong learners, best galapagos cruise for foodies, when is the best time to cruise the galapagos islands.

With pleasant temperatures all year long, the best time to visit the Galapagos Islands is whenever you’re ready to go. Several cruise lines sail to the Galapagos Islands all year long. While you can see wildlife all year, December is hatching season for the giant tortoises, and July is mating season for blue-footed boobies and short-eared owls. Sea turtles lay their eggs early in the year and fully formed marine iguanas typically hatch in April and May.

Are Galapagos cruises expensive?

The Galapagos Islands aren’t a bargain destination. Expect to pay somewhere between $5,000 and $12,000 per traveler depending on the ship, itinerary, and length of the voyage. But one thing’s for sure: Whatever your preference, there’s a Galapagos Islands cruise for you. These are seven of the best Galapagos cruises for every type of traveler.

Ecoventura

Whatever your preference, there’s a Galapagos Islands cruise for you. For those who want to travel in style, the ships of luxury cruise line Ecoventura meet expectations—and then some.

Ecoventura offers one of the most luxurious—and family-friendly cruises—in the Galapagos. Each of its three expedition yachts—the Origin, Theory, and Evolve —can accommodate 20 guests across 10 staterooms. These seven-night all-inclusive voyages make environmental responsibility a priority, encouraging guests to join the effort to help preserve this delicate area. Children six and up are welcome on board. Some staterooms connect to create spacious family suites, and two are designed to accommodate three guests each. Kids menus, children’s activities, and a kids club are also available. For adults, there’s a fitness center, jacuzzi, cooking demonstrations, and group cooking classes. You’ll also find kayaks, standup paddleboards, snorkeling gear, and zodiacs on board. On shore, naturalists lead daily two-hour nature walks, visiting lava fields, scenic cliffs, and secluded beaches. Replenish yourself at the onboard restaurant which serves a breakfast buffet, afternoon tea, and multi-course lunch and dinner menus.

Uncruise’s Galapagos island cruise will take you to seven islands over the course of a week on board La Pinta , a 48-passenger yacht boasting floor-to-ceiling windows, a sundeck, a fitness center, and a hot tub. This isn’t the newest or most luxurious ship sailing the Galapagos, but it’s comfortable and has been recently refurbished. It also comes with everything you need to make the most of your Galapagos adventure—including kayaks, paddleboards, snorkeling gear, scuba equipment, and a glass-bottom boat. This is a Galapagos cruise where nature and wildlife take center stage: Hike Dragon Hill on Isla Santa Cruz while looking for iguanas and flamingos, paddleboard alongside sea lions at Isla Floreana, or enjoy a stroll along a secluded white-sand beach. This small cruise operator prides itself on cruises that don’t feel like cruises. If you think cruising isn’t your thing, Uncruise might change your mind.

Join a small group of future friends on the Reina Silvia Voyager , G Adventures’ newest catamaran that’s custom-built for sailing the Galapagos. This vessel began sailing in 2022, and two of its 10 cabins are designed for solo travelers . These solo cabins are no tiny hideaways. Each comes with a queen-sized bed, desk, and a large picture window to frame your Galapagos view. A 10-day itinerary starts and ends in Quito, taking guests on a journey through the Central and East Islands to look for sea lions, iguanas, and a seemingly endless variety of birds. Go kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, or paddleboarding—or kick back and relax on the spacious sundeck while enjoying some of the most unspoiled views in the world. There’s a chef on board to ensure you never go hungry, a jacuzzi to soothe sore muscles, lots of spaces for socializing when you want to, and a bar that’s perfect for sunset cocktails.

Avalon Waterways may be better known for its European river cruises , but it also sails the Galapagos Islands. The Treasure of the Galapagos is a gorgeous small ship, carrying a maximum of 16 guests. And while there’s no long list of restaurants onboard, there are creative, locally inspired menus featuring seasonal ingredients and lots of vegetarian options. You’ll also find daily natural history lectures, a team of multilingual naturalists, floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows, and a plunge pool.

If you have family members who are keen on science and nature then the a science center on board the Hurtigruten...

If you have family members who are keen on science and nature, then the a science center on board the Hurtigruten Expedition’s MS Santa Cruz II will be sure to delight.

There may be no better way to get your kid interested in science and history than a Galapagos Islands cruise on board Hurtigruten Expedition’s MS Santa Cruz II . The ship operates a Citizen Science Program, enlisting guests to help with completing research projects. There’s also a science center on board and a slate of lectures and expert-led discussions. The HX In Darwin’s Footsteps itinerary follows the famous evolutionary biologist’s journey through the Galapagos. Walk along a beach Darwin visited in 1835, see the giant tortoises, which have a lifespan of over 100 years, that may have greeted him nearby, and visit the Charles Darwin Research Station, which helps care for endangered baby tortoises. Only about 15,000 Galapagos tortoises remain in existence, and there really is no better place to learn about them or the endangerment of wildlife. While there’s no specific kids programming, children six and up are welcome onboard the MS Santa Cruz II.

If you grew up reading National Geographic magazine, you’ll want to hop on board the National Geographic Gemini . The ship sails the Galapagos as part of a partnership between Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic , two legendary names in exploration. National Geographic experts lead these journeys and they’re often joined by National Geographic photographers. Kids can join the National Geographic Global Explorers program, a hands-on experience designed to teach them about geographic exploration and scientific research. The National Geographic Gemini can accommodate up to 48 passengers in 27 guest suites. More than a dozen suites come with private balconies, one of which is large enough to accommodate a private hot tub. (Don’t fret if that suite is already booked, there’s a whirlpool hot tub on the sundeck that’s open to all guests.) You’ll also find a well-stocked library, a well-stocked bar, and meals made with locally sourced ingredients on board.

If you want to learn about Ecuadorian cuisine while sailing the Galapagos, Silversea may be the cruise line for you. Silversea is a luxury cruise line known for its next-level onboard dining programs . Learn all about the local cuisine from the ship’s executive chef while feasting on locally sourced meat and produce—you can try Ecuadorian cheese aged in lava tubes and even make ceviche during a hands-on cooking demonstration. The Silver Origin ’s onboard restaurants serve a mix of international, traditional, and modern Ecuadorian food, and vegans and vegetarians aren’t afterthoughts here. Each Silversea suite comes with the service of a butler; most have private teak verandas as well. With a capacity for 100 guests, Silversea’s Silver Origin is one of the largest ships sailing the Galapagos Islands, but these voyages regularly sell out, so be sure to book early.

What is the right length of time for a yacht safari? One of the biggest mistakes travelers make when visiting the Galapagos is simply not leaving enough time to experience the islands to the fullest. We’ve crafted a just-right 8 day/7 night and 14 day/15 night itinerary options to maximize your time for exploration, breathtaking wildlife encounters, and optimal relaxation.

8 Days / 7 Nights Itineraries Over the course of 30+ years of Galapagos experience, Quasar has crafted two 7 night/ 8 day itineraries of equal quality in terms of site visitations, expedition activities, scenery, and wildlife encounters. Join us for a week of discovery through the lens of Darwin.

15 Days / 14 Nights Itinerary For those time-privileged travelers seeking deeper Galapagos immersion, we offer a 14 day/15 night itinerary. This expedition covers the entire archipelago, ensuring no experience is left a mystery. Guests enjoy a higher chance of encountering the rare species that inspired Darwin’s brilliant works.

In 2012, Galapagos National Park began requiring all cruise organizations to wait two weeks before visiting the same landing site. This regulation was introduced to disperse boats more evenly and lighten the environmental load for the Park’s 80+ visitor sites, and resulted in 2-3 cruise itineraries for every ship in Galapagos.

One of our Galapagos experts will happily offer itinerary guidance and answer questions about the journeys we offer.

How to Get To Galapagos

International Flight Route Durations to Galapagos Islands

Travel to the enchanted islands from any part of the world by air, with a quick hop from mainland Ecuador to the Galapagos Islands. From flight coordination to tailoring your itinerary, our Expedition Designers do it all.

Is there a flight directly to Galapagos? There are no direct international flights to Galapagos. To reach the islands, you must first arrive in mainland Ecuador (either Quito or Guayaquil), then take a quick flight directly to your Galapagos cruise port.

How much does a ticket cost from Quito or Guayaquil to Galapagos? The extra roundtrip plane ticket from Ecuador’s mainland cities of Quito or Guayaquil to Galapagos averages US$ 450-500. This tier of tickets allows for changes and includes one checked bag. Domestic air tickets to Galapagos are typically not included with Quasar's Galapagos cruises, however, we are happy to help you arrange this flight in conjunction with your selected yacht safari.

How far in advance should you book your flight to the Galapagos or South America? Unlike other destinations, airlines that fly to Galapagos do not apply the typical dynamic pricing conditions. Therefore, the “golden rule” of booking flights between 40 and 50 days prior to your cruise does not always apply. Because flights to the islands are limited, the peak time to buy your ticket to Galapagos is as soon as your island accommodations are booked (cruise or hotel).

Top 10 Galapagos FAQs Asked by First-Time Travelers

1. what is the best way to see the galapagos islands cruises or hotel.

Over 97% of the Galapagos archipelago is a national park, completely off limits to human establishments. Only 3% of the islands are human-inhabited, where hotels are allowed to be built. Therefore, the only way to access the majority of the visitor sites is on a cruise throughout the entire archipelago.

If you are considering a hotel-based visit, one major problem you’ll face is how to access the Galapagos National Park. There are roughly 70 terrestrial and 70 marine visitor sites throughout the national park where travelers are permitted. Only a handful of these landing sites are accessible from the hotels by day boat, usually at additional cost.

Hotels throughout Galapagos compete for spaces on day boats that take visitors to landing sites. If you are lucky enough to get a seat, landing site rides can then be 2.5 hours each way with a high possibility of getting seasick.

When it’s finally time for your Galapagos trip, the last thing you want is for your experience to be limited and your national park access restricted. While hotel stays are a wonderful way to relax before or after your journey, cruise boats have the edge when it comes to exploring the islands. Think of a yacht safari as an exclusive floating luxury hotel, complete with off-the-beaten-path adventure activities, rare wildlife encounters, personalized itineraries, and access to the authentic, uninhabited side of the islands. Learn more here - What's the best way to see the Galapagos Islands?

2. WHICH CRUISE LINES GO TO THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS?

Starting in 2010 when restrictions on non-local ships were lifted, larger international cruise lines started to gain interest in Galapagos. Organizations like Celebrity, Silversea, Disney and Hurtigruten now offer cruises in the archipelago. All of these major cruise lines operate 100 passenger ships, which is the largest ship size permitted in the Galapagos National Park and the Galapagos Marine Reserve.

If you have cruised with a major cruise line before, 100 passengers may sound like a very small number. However, in Galapagos, these ships are the equivalent of the 1,000 passenger ships in other popular cruising destinations.

To get the top experience in the Galapagos, we highly recommend choosing Galapagos luxury yachts with 36 passengers or less. With much smaller tour groups, flexible itineraries, and dedicated naturalist guides, yacht safaris allow you to experience Galapagos away from the crowds. Learn more here - Which Cruise Lines go to the Galapagos Islands?

3. WHERE DO GALAPAGOS CRUISES LEAVE FROM?

Galapagos cruises depart from 3 places within the archipelago: Baltra Island, the port town of Puerto Ayora (on Santa Cruz Island), and the port town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (on San Cristobal Island). No Galapagos cruises leave from mainland Ecuador. Your adventure begins with an easy domestic flight from Quito or Guayaquil to the Galapagos.

Guests traveling with Quasar will not need to worry about the logistics of getting to the Galapagos and to your cruise departure port. We will make all the arrangements for you, from the moment you land in mainland Ecuador until the moment you depart from your lifetime adventure. Learn more here - Where do Galapagos Cruises leave from?

4. HOW MUCH DOES A GALAPAGOS CRUISE COST?

We often get asked what the cost of a Galapagos Islands cruise is. The answer depends on the type of accommodations and experiences you are seeking.

Use the general guidelines below to book the premier Galapagos luxury cruise to fit your budget. Keep a lookout—Galapagos cruise offers are available from time to time, especially if you have a flexible travel timeline.

Budget Cruises: In terms of accommodations, these cruises are the equivalent of 1 and 2 star hotels. Budget cruises can cost between $250-$430 dollars per person, per day. A week-long budget Galapagos cruise can cost between $1,800-$3,000 per person.

Tourist Superior Cruises: Cruises in this category are the equivalent of a 3 star hotel and can cost between $450-$600 per person, per day. A week-long tourist superior cruise can cost between $3,100-$4,200 per person.

First Class Cruises: First class cruises are the equivalent of a 4 star hotel and can cost between $610-$780 per person, per day. A week-long first class cruise can cost between $4,300-$5,500 per person.

Luxury Cruises: These cruises are the equivalent of a 5 star hotel in terms of accommodations, service, excursions, cultural immersion, and expert naturalist guides. Luxury cruises in Galapagos can cost between $800-$1,700 per person for the day, depending on the suite category you choose. A week-long Galapagos luxury cruise can cost between $6,000-$12,000 dollars per person and typically deliver the highest overall value to travelers.

Extras: It’s important to factor in additional costs like alcoholic beverages, laundry, souvenirs, and gratuities for Guides and crew. Learn more here - How much does a Galapagos cruise cost?

5. ARE GALAPAGOS CRUISES WORTH IT?

Simply put, absolutely! Galapagos is a one-of-a-kind destination that most travelers, and especially wildlife enthusiasts, have on their bucket lists. There’s no other place on earth where you can safely get up close to wild animals in their natural habitats.

There are over 40 national park landing sites throughout the islands where travelers are permitted to go ashore, enjoy adventure activities, and interact with the rare species that inspired Darwin’s revolutionary research. Over 70% of these landing sites are not accessible when staying in a hotel. A safari-style Galapagos luxury cruise guarantees an immersive adventure that follows in Darwin’s footsteps. Learn more here - Are Galapagos Cruises Worth It?

6. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET FROM ECUADOR TO GALAPAGOS?

To get to the Galapagos Islands you must take a domestic flight from the cities of Guayaquil (airport code GYE), Manta (airport code MEC) or Quito (airport code UIO) in mainland Ecuador. All three cities offer direct flights to the Galapagos, although only Quito and Guayaquil currently offer them daily.

Direct flights from the cities of Guayaquil and Manta to Galapagos take between 1 hour and 45 minutes to up to 2 hours (depending on wind and weather conditions). Direct flights from Quito to Galapagos take about 2 hours and 20 minutes. However, it is worth noting that there are normally only 1 to 2 direct flights to the Islands per day from Quito, while there are about 6 to 8 flights to the Islands with a brief stopover in Guayaquil. Flying to Galapagos via Guayaquil is the most common way to get to the Islands when flying from Quito. These flights take around 3 hours 30 min to 3 hours 50 minutes, depending on the airline you choose and the length of the stop in Guayaquil. Stopovers in Guayaquil are normally not long (40 to 50 minutes) and you are not required to disembark the plane while the airplane refuels and the passengers from Guayaquil board. To learn more - How long does it take to get from Ecuador to Galapagos

7. ARE THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS SAFE FOR TRAVEL?

Galapagos is arguably one of the safest and most magical destinations in the world. Crime is basically nonexistent in the islands, but there are some basic precautions that all Galapagos travelers must take, especially when visiting mainland Ecuador. Everyone who visits Galapagos must spend at least a day in the mainland, at one of Ecuador’s main cities. And just like any large city around the world, there are some basic precautions you must take. Please refer to our detailed article ' Is it Safe to Travel to the Galapagos Islands? ' for necessary precautions for a pleasant stay in both Ecuador and the Galapagos.

Some Galapagos luxury cruise companies, including Quasar’s Evolution yacht, are equipped with an infirmary and a doctor on board for the added safety of its guests. Our crew and Guides are trained in safety protocols. In the event of an emergency, while rare, there are swift, safe medical evacuation options.

8. WHAT IS THE BEST MONTH TO VISIT THE GALAPAGOS?

For anyone interested in visiting the Galapagos, there is really no better or worse month to visit the Islands. In part this is because the Galapagos archipelago is right on the equator; therefore air and water temperatures do not vary much throughout the year. In addition, almost all of the animal species in Galapagos do not migrate, which means you can see them any time of the year. The Waved Albatross is one of the few migratory exceptions and is best seen in spring and summer. For a detailed month by month depiction of Galapagos travel in terms of weather, water temperatures and animal encounters, please visit our page of When to Visit the Galapagos Islands .

However, there is a high season for tourism in Galapagos which tends to be from mid-December to January and from June to August. This coincides with the general holidays and vacation months of the northern hemisphere and doesn’t have anything to do with weather or animal migration patterns in Galapagos. High and Low seasons are solely based on the travel trends of the Galapagos’ main market, North America, which represents about 60% of its international travelers. So, if you want to avoid the crowds in Galapagos, and perhaps even take advantage of a nice discount, travel in ‘the secret season’ which is from September through early December.

9. HOW TO GET TO THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS?

Unless you already live in Ecuador, making your way to the Galapagos is going to be a multi-leg travel event. You’ll have to take an international flight to get to Ecuador, and then you’ll need to take a domestic flight out to the islands. There are a few important things to remember when trying to get to Galapagos:

- There are no international flights to Galapagos. - The only way to get to the Islands is by air. - Make sure you are flying to the right island in Galapagos. - Don’t book your flights before you have booked your cruise or hotel stay. - Leave some buffer time between your international and domestic flights.

For a detailed step by step guide, be sure to visit our page on How to Get to the Galapagos Islands .

10. WHAT IS THE BEST GALAPAGOS ITINERARY & LOOP?

Galapagos cruise itineraries are often referred to as 'loops' due to the circular routes the ships take around the archipelago. Therefore, whether a company calls their offerings 'itineraries' or 'loops,' they are talking about the same concept.

We are pleased to report that selecting an exceptional Galapagos itinerary is straightforward as long as you are familiar with the destination and the regulations of the Galapagos National Park. Our in-depth article, ' Galapagos Cruise Itineraries & Loops Explained: Which One is Best? ' provides a comprehensive understanding of the distribution of the Galapagos Archipelago, the workings of the Galapagos National Park regulations, and the reasons why cruise companies have various ways of dividing their 15-day cruise routes into shorter 4, 5, and 8-day options.

Three Great Reasons to Visit The Galapagos

Once in a lifetime, you can walk in the footsteps of Darwin, getting closer to the natural world than you ever have or ever will, coming home with a radically new understanding of the planet. With us, you'll encounter flora found nowhere else, come face to face with fauna that has not learned to fear humans, and hike moonscapes that barely resemble Earth.

While the animals of the Galapagos Islands get the glory, the evolution and adaptation of plant life here is equally important. Check out the beautiful lava Cactus, which only grows on barren lava fields. The Prickly Pear Cactus found only on these islands. And, the magnificent Scalesia, which grows up to sixty feet tall.

Since the animals here don’t fear humans, you can truly get up close and personal, looking into the eyes of a Galapagos marine iguana, and walking among penguins – the only penguin species north of the equator. Here, you’ll discover creatures whose very existence forms the basis for one of the most famous scientific theories in history.

The Adventure

Nature lovers flock to this exotic terrain born of fire. Once, volcanos spat and lava flowed, creating an archipelago of 19 islands with a marine reserve that serve as a living museum of evolution. Extreme isolation and the convergence of three ocean currents developed the most unusual wildlife.

Expand Your Comfort Zone

On our award-winning Galapagos adventures, you'll meet amazing wildlife, trek unearthly landscapes, and see it all through the eyes of experts. You'll relax in spacious accommodations, savor globally inspired cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients, and be treated to exquisite service. All while treading lightly and supporting local communities.

Leave the World a Better Place

We work hard to minimize our footprint, and Ecuador’s secretary of tourism has acknowledged our efforts. We support the community by sourcing fresh seafood from local fishermen and pillow treats from local chocolatiers. Guests have donated $1.5 million to the Galapagos Fund and helped plant 50,000 trees. Celebrity Flora, our newest ship here, features dynamic positioning to protect the seabed, silicone paint to glide with less fuel, solar panels to make electricity, and no single-use plastics.

Balance Exploration With Relaxation

A few million years ago, volcanos erupted, creating these moonscapes where lumbering tortoises, comical birds, and other wildlife evolved in isolation. Today, you can experience this wondrous environment on shore excursions led by naturalists—two each day—as active or leisurely as you choose. Climb the hills to find colonies of red-footed boobies, hike the coast to spot colorful Sally Lightfoot crabs, watch the sea lions go surfing, or just relax and enjoy the sandy beaches and deck-side bars.

Service: Little Things Make a Big Difference

All of our ships feature service so attentive, so intuitive, yet so unobtrusive, that the things you want tend to appear before you even realize you want them. On our new Celebrity Flora ® , for instance, your personal suite attendant—yes, every stateroom is a suite—helps you unpack when you arrive, brings the rich morning coffee just the way you like it, restocks your minibar seamlessly, and so much more. These islands may be primitive, but your time with us will be anything but.

Certified Experts Lead the Way

Sailings include two shore excursions per day, each the adventure of a lifetime. Onboard naturalists, certified by Galapagos National Park, lead small groups of no more than 12 explorers. Activities are curated by our highly trained team of experts and each night we brief you on upcoming adventures. On the top deck of Celebrity Flora, you can even join optional Galapagos Glamping—stargazing with the naturalists and waking to a private breakfast.

Savor Globally Inspired, Locally Sourced Cuisine

Our world-renowned cuisine is simply better because we use locally sourced ingredients. From the robust coffee grown on Ecuadoran plantations to the fresh local seafood, almost everything was grown, raised, or caught nearby. Then we make culinary magic in venues such as the upscale Seaside Restaurant and alfresco Ocean Grill on Celebrity Flora. In every restaurant on every ship, fine dining will be the highlight of every evening.

A Typical Day in the Galapagos

The morning.

Start the day with a leisurely breakfast, the perfect combination of coffee and fresh air. Then, get suited up with wetsuits for the day’s adventures. Get comfortably seated in your tender for your morning’s commute to your first island where you’ll find yourself surrounded by hundreds of marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and so much more. Relax at the beach, snorkel, or take in a guided hike as you get to know the incredible habitants of this island up close.

Exploring works up an appetite. Return to the ship for a freshly-prepared lunch as you recall the morning’s adventure. As you dine, your ship gently moves to your next island destination. After lunch, suit back up, hop into your tender and get ready for another afternoon of excursions. From white sand beaches to black fields of lava flows, each island presents unique discoveries.

As the evening sun begins to lower, meet at the bar to unwind and talk with fellow explorers about your experiences. Take in a briefing about what the next day holds before settling down for a gourmet dinner, full of fresh seafood and incredible local flavors. Relax, and get ready to rest up in the haven of your room for tomorrow’s adventures.

The Best Galapagos Cruises for Intrepid Travelers

Explore this far-flung corner of the globe by boat.

By Irenie Forshaw

via natura galapagos cruise

Located in the Pacific Ocean around 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands are not easily accessed – but for nature lovers, few other destinations can compare.

The birthplace of Charles Darwin’s groundbreaking theory of evolution, the South American archipelago is home to one of the world’s most diverse range of bird, plant and reptile species, many of which had developed in remarkable isolation from the neighboring islands. As Darwin himself wrote in 1835, “The natural history of this archipelago is very remarkable: it seems to be a little world within itself.”

The best way to explore the island region is by sea, with a range of Galapagos cruise operators offering intrepid travelers the chance to see the archipelago’s giant tortoises and colorful marine iguanas for themselves. From no-expenses-spared luxury catamarans to expedition vessels with expert marine scientists onboard, these are the best Galapagos cruises.

via natura galapagos cruise suite

Starting off strong with Via Natura, this family-owned cruise operator and DMC is based in Peru and Ecuador and operates two ships in the Galapagos. The Monserrat is a modern and comfortable yacht offering top-class service for an unforgettable trip, but our top pick has to be the Hermes Mega Catamaran.

The first ultra-luxury catamaran to operate specifically in the Galapagos Islands, the ship is home to 12 suites (ten doubles, two singles) – each with a private balcony and Jacuzzi overlooking the ocean. Upon leaving their suite, guests will soon discover that Via Natura has made no compromises between comfort and exclusivity. Along with the stunning scenery, guests can enjoy vast social areas, from lounges to alfresco restaurants and bars. This multi-hull yacht provides a world-class culinary experience paired with an all-inclusive wine and spirits menu curated by professional sommeliers and a famous Ecuadorian chef.

The company also goes ultra-luxury with regard to naturalist guides, adhering to a 1-to-10 guests ratio (the industry standard in the Galapagos being 1-to-16). That means guests can enjoy the natural wonders of the Galapagos in more intimate groups. The expert nature guides spend more time with each guest, opening up more wonders of the archipelago and better facilitating learning. A team of dedicated crew members and attentive butlers (the catamaran has a gold standard 1-to-1 staff-to-guest ratio) are ready to meet every need and provide bespoke experiences, from in-room dining to relaxing massages in the catamaran’s spa.

Metropolitan Touring

Kayaking Galapagos Islands

Metropolitan Touring operates a fleet of three ships – La Pinta, Santa Cruz II and Isabella II – that are kitted out with glass-bottom boats, kayaks and dinghies for exploring even the most difficult-to-get-to islets.

Expert naturalists lead small expedition groups of around 12 guests. Highlights from the jam-packed itineraries include a visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz to learn about the fascinating ongoing conservation efforts, spotting red-footed boobies in San Cristobel, and watching colonies of nesting birds on Genovesa Island.

The cruise line has taken considerable eco-friendly steps, fitting its ships with modern engine technology to minimize fuel consumption, onboard water desalination systems and offsetting its carbon footprint through forest conservation in the Choco Bioregion – a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Colombia and Northern Ecuador.

Abercrombie & Kent

Elite Galapagos Cruise deck with hot tub

Our list of the best Galapagos cruises would not be complete without mentioning Abercrombie & Kent. Our favorite trip is the 12-night Classic Ecuador & the Galapagos voyage, which begins in Ecuador’s capital city high in the foothills of the Andes before a flight to Balto Island where your Galapagos adventure starts.

Small ships make it easier to spot even the shyest wildlife – expect to glimpse everything from sea lions and orcas to yellow-crowned herons, flightless cormorants and Darwin’s finches. And you won’t have to sacrifice comfort; the suites are seriously luxurious and there’s a hot tub on the sun deck.

National Geographic

Finally, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more comprehensive, action-packed trip than National Geographic’s 10-day Galapagos Voyage onboard the purpose-built Endeavour II expedition vessel.

The state-of-the-art ship hosts 96 guests in 53 cabins and is equipped with a range of exploration equipment including kayaks, a Zodiac landing craft, a glass-bottomed Zodiac and snorkeling gear. When you’re not out exploring the archipelago, there’s a fitness center, spa, library and even a gallery to keep you entertained.

Perhaps most exciting of all are the expert photographers, naturalists and marine biologists that accompany you on the trip to share their fascinating insights into the wildlife and landscape. The itineraries are flexible so you can do as much (or as little) as you like, but you’ll have the option to take part in some incredible activities including swimming with Galapagos penguins and photographing giant tortoises in the wild.

Best Galapagos cruises for an epic wildlife adventure of a lifetime

Fran Golden

About 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador , in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the Galapagos Islands are a remarkable place to visit for wildlife sightings. You can see flightless Galapagos penguins, Galapagos sea lions, giant Galapagos tortoises, marine iguanas and hundreds of other species found nowhere else on Earth.

The islands are also one of the places in the world that are best explored by cruise ships.

To get close to Mother Nature in the mostly unpopulated islands, you need to get on the water — and land on islands in the company of a licensed Ecuadorian naturalist guide. Galapagos National Park tightly controls who comes in and where ships can explore.

All the ships are Ecuadorian flagged, Ecuadorian crewed and owned by Ecuadorian companies, sometimes in partnership with leading cruise companies. Excursions, often twice a day, are included in cruise fares. The sailings are year-round, and routes are always subject to change based on park control.

Related: My first cruise to the Galapagos: The good, the bad and the absolutely adorable

The cruise companies use various descriptors of where they go, but basically, if your ship heads north and west, you'll see more volcanic landscapes; if you go south or central, you'll explore more beaches and bays. Wildlife sightings on both routes are thrilling, both above and under the sea — where you may find yourself snorkeling with sharks and sea lions.

Bird-watchers may want to do a full 14-night trip to touch every corner and add many species to their life list. For the rest of us, a week or less can provide enough brag-worthy wildlife encounters to last a lifetime.

Choosing a ship will depend on how long you want to explore, how much you want to pay and what level of luxury you expect. It's not uncommon for travelers to combine a Galapagos cruise with land exploration in Quito, Ecuador, the Ecuadorian Amazon or Machu Picchu in Peru. Most cruise lines offer add-on land-based itineraries.

Here are our picks for the best Galapagos cruises.

Short cruises on La Pinta

galapagos island luxury cruise

Metropolitan Touring operates this intimate, 48-passenger yacht and offers popular four- and six-night itineraries. These are a good option if you are short on time.

Cabins are spacious, with floor-to-ceiling windows so you can take in the views even when getting ready for the day or relaxing in bed. Four cabins can be connected for families or friends traveling together (some sleep three). The entire ship sports a comfortably upscale ambience, and a favorite hangout is the sun deck with its hot tub and bar.

An expedition leader, along with onboard naturalists, will guide you through your trip. The ship is equipped with kayaks for guest use, and a glass-bottom boat provides views for those who aren't into snorkeling.

Cost : Four-night cruises start from $5,812 per person; six-night cruises start from $7,789 per person. Small-ship expedition specialist UnCruise Adventures also charters La Pinta. Seven-night packages that combine a pre-cruise hotel stay in Guayaquil, Ecuador, with a six-night cruise start from $10,900; they are available on select dates from April through December.

Hurtigruten expedition experience on Santa Cruz II

Also operated by Metropolitan Touring, the 90-passenger Santa Cruz II is an expedition ship with contemporary decor and comfortable single, double and triple cabins.

When you aren't in your cabin you might catch views from the ship's two hot tubs. Activity equipment includes snorkeling gear (with wet suits available to rent), a glass-bottom boat and kayaks, plus a top-deck fitness room.

The ship, which is operated on a carbon-neutral basis, is under charter to the well-regarded expedition company Hurtigruten for select dates from now through March 2025 and some dates in 2026.

Cost : Eight-night packages combining a six-night cruise with two hotel nights in Quito are available from $11,227 per person. Other options include 11-night cruises from $10,171 per person and six-night itineraries from $5,734 per person.

Yachting with Quasar Expeditions' Grace

galapagos island luxury cruise

Quasar Expeditions has the most historically prestigious ship in the Galapagos market. The 16-passenger Grace is a classic yacht from the 1920s that carried Princess Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco on their honeymoon in 1956 (in the Mediterranean).

Reflective of the golden age of travel, it's all about luxury on board — polished woodwork, gourmet meals and service from a crew of 10, plus two naturalist guides.

Cost : Seven-night cruises start from $9,950 per person.

Island exploration with Adventures by Disney on Galapagos Legend

Adventures by Disney offers sailings in the Galapagos on the 100-passenger Galapagos Legend in June, July, August and December in 2024 and March, June and July in 2025.

The minimum age is 7, and the recommended age is 8 and older. The comfortable ship has the rare-in-the-Galapagos feature of a swimming pool, plus a hot tub. When Disney is on board, its trained Adventure Guides lead special Junior Adventurers activities for kids in addition to the usual snorkeling, kayaking and glass-bottom boat rides. Select sailings invite special guest experts on board to give workshops and presentations in their area of expertise.

Cost : Fares for eight-night trips beginning with two hotel nights in Quito followed by a six-night cruise in 2024 start at $8,999 (adults) and $8,499 (children). Rates for the same itinerary in 2025 start from $8,999 (adults) and $8,099 (children). Other companies, such as Go Galapagos, offer three-night cruises on Galapagos Legend starting from $2,113 per person.

Relais & Chateaux experience on Origin, Theory and Evolve

galapagos island luxury cruise

Ecoventura's 20-passenger, all-suite yachts, Origin, Theory and Evolve, are recognized by the prestigious Relais & Chateaux gourmet restaurant and luxury hospitality association, and intimate and luxurious exploration is their calling card.

The crew of 13 includes a French-trained chef, a concierge and two naturalists.

Pampering ensues — even for young guests who are on board select family departures, during which added activities include a cultural exchange with local students. Check out the rare Galapagos publications in the library when you're not in the outdoor Jacuzzi, on the kayaks or on paddleboards.

Cost : Seven-night cruises are available from $9,950 per person. Charter the entire yacht starting at $199,000.

Superyacht sailing with Aqua Expeditions

Aqua Expeditions is well known in luxury circles for its superyachts in the Peruvian Amazon and Asia. The company bills its 16-passenger, all-suite, all-inclusive Aqua Mare as the "first true superyacht in the Galapagos Islands."

The interior decor is by Italian superyacht designer François Zuretti. Also, the Peruvian-Japanese fusion cuisine is by chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino, famed for his "rainforest to table cuisine," which features ingredients grown only in the Amazon jungle and focuses on sustainable culinary practices.

Among the spacious suites, the top Owner's Suite is 861 square feet. The Jacuzzi is big enough for six guests. The yacht is also stocked with kayaks and paddleboards for guests to use.

Cost : Seven-night cruises start from $10,500 per person. Charter the entire yacht starting at $218,500.

Galapagos with Avalon Waterways

galapagos island luxury cruise

River cruise line Avalon Waterways is known for sailings in Europe and on the Mekong. However, it's also in the Galapagos, chartering the 16-passenger small ship Treasure of Galapagos for seven-night sailings in August and December in 2024 and 2025.

All cabins on the ship, including the 430-square-foot master suite, have balconies and are done up in welcoming, contemporary decor. The ship's design is outdoor-focused, with alfresco dining and a bar near the Jacuzzi.

Indoors is a small lounge and dining area. Wine and beer are included with meals.

Cost : Seven-night cruises (beginning with two nights in Quito) start from $6,003 per person.

Expedition sailing with Lindblad's National Geographic Endeavour II

Top expedition company Lindblad Expeditions has been sailing in the Galapagos for more than 50 years, evident by the seasoned team of naturalists and the experiences they deliver, including exploring the sea thanks to innovative underwater equipment.

This 96-passenger ship is a spacious base camp. Passengers can explore with Zodiacs, kayaks, glass-bottom boats and stand-up paddleboards.

Select expeditions feature guest National Geographic biologists, authors and photographers who can help you get the perfect wildlife photos. The cruises are popular with families, and a diving program is available for advanced divers.

Cost : Fares for a 10-night cruise (including two nights in Guayaquil) start from $6,605 per person. Lindblad also has a 52-passenger, all-suite luxury yacht in the market, the National Geographic Islander II, with as many crew members as guests. Fares for its seven-night cruises start from $6,864 per person.

Ultra-luxury experience on Silver Origin

galapagos island luxury cruise

Ultra-luxury line Silversea Cruises delivers everything on a silver platter on the 100-passenger Silver Origin.

Request Champagne from your butler while you lounge in the hot tub. Guests will likely also appreciate the high-tech walls that feature touch-controlled high-definition screens, allowing you to zoom in on exclusive wildlife videos shot by drone in Galapagos National Park.

There is also the luxury of space to spread out, indoors and out, amid gorgeous contemporary furnishings. Everyone stays in a large butler-serviced suite.

Additionally, the cuisine is extraordinary — the Ecuadorian executive chef even takes time to explain the local ingredients he uses. The staff includes one naturalist guide for every 10 guests.

Tour Itinerary

Fly from Quito or Guayaquil Hermes Galapagos 7 day /6 night Monday-Sunday (itinerary C+D) Other itineraries are available, please ask us for more info Catch an early flight to San Cristóbal Island. In the afternoon, visit Tijeretas, a great viewpoint and our first wildlife encounter. Learn about the origins of the Galapagos at the Interpretation Center. Interpretation Center Visit in San Cristóbal Island (PM) Learn about the history of the Galápagos Islands from the very beginning of their volcanic origins through to today’s conservation efforts. Tour the Human History exhibit to learn about the islands’ discovery and colonization, and discover the natural history and variety of flora and fauna that make the Galápagos so fascinating. Tijeretas Hill (PM) This hill bears its name thanks to the frigate birds as “Tijeretas” is how people locally call them. Here we will enjoy from a great view of beautiful landscapes at the foot of a frigate bird nesting colony.

Enjoy the day on Española Island, one of the oldest in the archipelago. Visit the white sandy beach of Gardner Bay's and the bird colonies of Punta Suárez. Arriving at Gardner Bay's in the morning, spend the day exploring on shore and snorkelling at Gardner Island in the bay. After lunch, sail to the western side of the islands to Punta Suárez, known for its amazing bird colonies and home to the waved albatross (April and December). Gardner Bay Visit (AM) Visit Gardner Bay's magnificent white sandy beach, home to sea lions and sea birds. Be sure to explore the beautiful turquoise water and its incredible sea life. Spot young sea lions and large schools of surprisingly big tropical fish, including yellow-tailed surgeonfish, king angelfish, and bump-head parrot fish. Snorkeling Gardner Bay (AM) Head to Tortuga Rock and Gardner Bay for a spectacular snorkelling experience. Spot playful young sea lions and large schools of tropical fish, including yellow-tailed surgeonfish, king angelfish, and bump-head parrot fish. Look for white-tipped reef sharks napping on the bottom. Punta Suárez Visit (PM) Visit Punta Suárez, one of most rich wildlife landing sites in the Galápagos. Be greeted by surfing young sea lions on arrival. Head to the trail to find many species of nesting sea birds, and, if lucky, see the waved albatross. Follow the path up to a cliff for great views over the ocean, and watch sea birds gliding in the wind.

Land at Punta Cormorant on Floreana. Guided walks to observe the bird and wildlife and learn about the natural history. Snorkelling excursion at Champion Islet. Visit Post Office Bay. Punta Cormorant Visit in Floreana Island (AM) Visit Punta Cormorant, the only landing site on Floreana Island, and discover two amazingly different beaches: one with green sand, coloured by olivine crystals, and another with white sand particles known as 'Flour Beach'. Spend the afternoon observing flamingos and other shore birds feeding in the lagoon. Spot penguins and marine iguanas at the water’s edge, and explore the lava tubes with the Galápagos CEO. Snorkelling in Champion Islet(AM) Jump on in and get up close and personal with the playful sea lion colony that reside in the waters off this tiny island. Keep an eye out for sea turtles, rays and colourful fish swimming by. There can be currents in this area, this activity should be done by strong swimmers only. Post Office Bay Visit in Floreana Island (PM) Visit Post Office Bay and learn about its unique history. In the late 18th century, English whaling vessels placed a barrel here to be used as a post office. Today, the box is used mainly by tourists, who may drop off and pick up unstamped letters to be carried to far destinations. Continue the tradition – leave a letter and take one to deliver (be sure it makes it to the correct location)

Disembark in Puerto Ayora and visit the Charles Darwin Research Station to see the giant Galápagos tortoises. In the afternoon enjoy the highlands, visit a tortoise ranch and see some of the amazing volcanic formations on Santa Cruz. Charles Darwin Research Station Visit (AM) Puerto Ayora Visit Fausto Llerena Breeding Center a great place to observe many species of tortoises and land iguanas in captivity. Brought back from the brink of extinction, see the famous Galápagos tortoise up close – a corral houses adult tortoises, and a nursery cares for the young until around age three when their shells have hardened. This area also houses the Charles Darwin Research Station, a scientific organization initiated in 1964, which works to preserve the Galápagos' ecosystem through the conservation efforts of scientists, researchers, and volunteers. While the offices themselves are not open to visitors, the research station provides a study location for international scientists and environmental education for the local community. Santa Cruz Highlands Excursion (PM) (2h-3h) Visit the highlands of Santa Cruz and see the Galápagos giant tortoise in its natural surroundings. Explore the area and its incredible underground lava tunnels – some are more than 1km (.6 mi) long! Wander along the volcanic tubes and keep an eye out for the (mainly) nocturnal barn owls that sometimes roost here.

This morning we visit Dragon Hill on the west coast of Santa Cruz to see land Iguanas and a saltwater lagoon frequented by flamingos and other species of birds. In the afternoon, the boat arrives at a small uniquely shaped island off the southern tip of Santiago called Chinese Hat. Here it is often possible to see Galápagos penguins, and the marine life is fantastic for snorkelling. There is also a large sea lion colony as well as many marine iguanas that can be seen while walking amongst the volcanic scenery. Trek to see good views of the island's volcano. Dragon Hill (AM) Visit Cerro Dragón (Dragon Hill) for some prime birdwatching. Take a short walk from the beach to a hypersalinic (saltier than the ocean) lagoon frequented by pink flamingos, common stilts, pintail ducks, and other species of birds. Pass through a Scalesia tree forest; endemic to the area, there are only 400 specimens of Scalesia trees left in the world. Chinese Hat Visit (PM) Explore Chinese Hat’s beautiful landscape and spectacular white-coral sand beach followed by snorkeling with sea lions and penguins and swimming opportunities in the cove. Snorkelling in Chinese Hat (PM) Snorkel right from the white-coral sand beach and come face to face with playful sea lions and large schools of tropical fish. Keep an eye out for marine iguanas and penguins too!

Today we will be visiting the beautiful and remote Genovesa Island. This northern island, famous for its red-footed colony, is a paradise for bird lovers. It is estimated that about 200,00 Red-footed boobies live on this island. Prince Phillips’s Steps (AM) El Barranco or Prince Phillips’s Steps as otherwise known, was named after a visit by the British Monarch in 1964. El Barranco's steep 81-foot stairway leads up to a high cliff-face that opens out onto the plateau surrounding Darwin Bay. Here an amazing view can be appreciated. Once at the top of the stairway we will meet Nazca boobies, red-footed boobies, mockingbirds, and finches along the way of a palo santo trail. It will also be possible to see wedge-rumped storm petrels swarm and short-eared owls. Darwin Bay (PM) Darwin bay was formed by the collapse of the flooded caldera of Tower Island, another name used for Genovesa. After landing at a small sand and coral beach, it easy to realize why this island is a bird lover paradise. Among the bird species found here, the most common are swallow-tailed and lava gulls, mockingbirds, yellow-crowned night herons, lava herons, Galapagos doves and yellow warblers. We will continue on a short and flat trail to encounter red-footed booby and great frigatebird nests. We will visit a tidal lagoon where sea lions swim playfully ending our path on a cliff with magnificent views of this remote part of the Galapagos.

Baltra Take a morning panga ride and look for marine life in Black Turtle Cove. Disembark at Baltra and fly back to Ecuador mainland. Black Turtle Cove Excursion (AM) Explore the mangroves by panga to find rich marine wildlife between the fresh and salt waters. Keep any eye out for manta rays and sea turtles in this tranquil ecosystem. Whitetip reef sharks can also be seen gliding by. Fly back to Quito or Guayaquil *Galapagos excursions are subject to change without prior notice. Changes in plans may arise due to weather conditions, National Park regulations, or other unforeseen circumstances.

Guest Reviews

This was a tremendous trip for us. We were on the boat for 3 nights and 4 days. The wildlife and the snorkelling was amazing. Like other trips in this area, breakfast 7.30 and then off for a half day excursion . Back for lunch and then away again either snorkelling or walking on the Islands. So many photo opportunities! The guides are knowledgeable and friendly.

Baltra Island

galapagos island luxury cruise

Baltra, also referred to as South Seymour Island, is one of the smaller islands of the Galapagos, with an area of roughly 8 square miles. The island lies in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, about 600 miles west of Ecuador. The significance of Baltra rests in the fact that it is the main entry point into the Galapagos Islands. The main airport of the archipelago is located on Baltra (a second smaller one is in San Cristobal). Before Volcanic faulting occurred, Baltra was part of Santa Cruz, making it the newest of the islands. Due to its small size, there are no visitor accommodations in Baltra. Though the island is dry and the vegetation desolate, a large number of birds-frigatebirds and boobies- can be seen at the harbor. Land iguanas, marine iguanas and marine turtles can also be observed. After your arrival at Baltra, take the time to visit Bachas Beach, where you will be introduced to the wonders of the Galapagos. Also, don’t miss the chance to take a panga ride through Black Turtle Cove and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding mangroves.

Gardner Bay

galapagos island luxury cruise

Gardner Bay, located on the eastern side of Espanola(Hood) Island, has a long and beautiful white sand beach with a large sea lion colony. Rocks off the coast offer great snorkeling with reef sharks and many other tropic fish. White-tipped sharks, puffer fish, and colorful tropical fish fill the waters around Gardner Bay. It's simply beautiful.

Punta Suarez

galapagos island luxury cruise

Located on Espanola(Hood) Island, Punta Suarez has a trail leading through masked and blue-footed boobies colonies to a blow hole, where sea water is forced some 20m up into the air. Also the most colorful marine iguanas and lava lizards in the isles, sea lions, swallow-tailed gulls, Hood mockingbirds, Darwin finches and Galapagos doves and hawks can be seen. But the main attraction are the waved albatrosses, which are on the island from March to December.

Punta Cormorant

galapagos island luxury cruise

Punta Cormorant boasts of a larger lagoon with flamingos and other water birds. A trail leads to a sandy beach where turtles, rays and seabirds can be seen. Off the coast is Devil's Crown, a half submerged volcanic crater. This is a great snorkeling site with starfish, sea urchins and tropical fish in the shallow center and larger fish like sharks and rays around the outside of the rocks.

Post Office Bay

galapagos island luxury cruise

Located on Floreana Island, Post Office Bay, where 18th century whalers used a barrel as an unofficial mail drop, can be visited today. The idea behind the barrel was that British whalers or passer-bys to the island would pick up the letters and hand-deliver them in England. Letters and postcards without stamps can still be dropped in the barrel in this present day; however don’t expect a speedy delivery.

Punta Moreno

galapagos island luxury cruise

Located on the west side of Isabela Island, Punta Moreno means "dark point," taking its name from the very dark, new rocks formed by the lava flow from a fairly recent volcano eruption. Punta Moreno has very interesting new lava flows and pioneer plants, which are directly living on the raw rocks. There are small oases with green lakes, where you can sometime see flamingos, flightless cormorants, penguins, marine iguanas and pelicans.

galapagos island luxury cruise

Noteworthy because it is an area that was elevated from sea level in 1950's during the eruption of the Alcedo volcano. A part of the shoreline was raised more than 4 meters, and now the visitor can walk on what was once the sea floor, and see the dried corals and remains of a variety of mollusks and other sea organisms that were stranded by sudden uplift. Urvina Bay is located on the western coast of Isabela at the foot of Alcedo Volcano. On the trail going inland it is possible to see colorful land iguanas and even Galapagos Tortoises. Along the coast there are huge marine iguanas, pelicans and flightless cormorants and at times even penguins.

Punta Espinoza

galapagos island luxury cruise

Punta Espinosa is a narrow stretch of land where some of the most unique Galapagos species can be seen: marine iguanas conglomerate here in larger groups than in any other island. Following the trail inland, two different types of lava flows can be seen and compared.

Punta Vicente Roca

galapagos island luxury cruise

In the north of Isabela there is a small promontory known as Punta Vicente Roca, on the southwestern edge of Volcano Ecuador. The point presides over a pair of jewel-like coves. The coves lie on either side of the eroded remains of a volcanic ash cone, which make up the point. The sheltered bay is a popular anchorage for boats and visitors may have a look around in dinghies. The surrounding cliffs are actually the interior walls of a fallen volcano and there is a partly flooded cave. The area is also very good for scuba diving. Its abundant ocean life is the product of cool, nutrient-rich waters up welling off the volcano's steep submarine slopes. On the other side of the point is a secluded cove, accessible from the sea only through water-filled subterranean passages. Sea lions travel through these passageways and gather on the protected beaches of the hidden waters. Large numbers of blue-footed and masked boobies inhabit the point and the sheer cliffs, and flightless cormorants can be seen along the shoreline.

South Plaza Island

galapagos island luxury cruise

This enchanted Subtropical island is comprised of two small islets that are uplifted from the coast of Santa Cruz Island. Despite its slightly smaller size, the unique vegetation and location of Plazas island creates a setting in which the fauna and flora of the Galapagos can truly be experienced to its fullest. Some of the most intriguing species of the archipelago can be found on these amazing islets. One of the most common creatures to be seen on Plazas is the land iguana. This magnificent creature can most often be found lying in the cool shade of a cactus. The rugged cliffs of Plazas Island create a prime habitat for swallow-tailed gulls, along with many other species of tropical birds. The coast of this island is protected by a distinct rocky seashore. This protection has allowed a colony of lively sea lions to establish their home here on Plazas. The island’s main attractions are its sea lions, swallow-tailed gulls, yellow-tailed mullets, Audubon’s shearwaters, red-billed tropic birds, frigate birds, land iguanas, and brown pelicans.

Daphne Islands

galapagos island luxury cruise

One of the central islands, Daphne lays north of Santa Cruz and west of Baltra. There are actually two islands Daphne Major and Daphne Minor. Daphne Major is the younger of the two and the one that is visited. Though its location is easily in reach for most cruises, it is a select few that are able to visit this special place. The national park service restricts visitors allowed to visit Daphne. Visits are only allowed under special written permit by the National Park. Many boats do cruise by close enough to view the many birds and sea lions that live on Daphne. It is also a popular dive site for local dive operators from Santa Cruz.

Cerro Dragon

galapagos island luxury cruise

The north shore of Santa Cruz hosts Cerro Dragon (Dragon Hill). Known by its flamingo lagoon that gives a colorful touch to the scene. The trail leads to a small hill where land iguanas live and nest. This area is accessible only by sea due to the fact that it is covered in extensive mangroves.

Puerto Ayora

galapagos island luxury cruise

The largest settlement area, offering the most services in the Galapagos, Puerto Ayora is a port town situated along Academy Bay on Isla Santa Cruz. Most yachts offering cruises of the Galapagos hail from Puerto Ayora. Also home to the National Park Services and the Charles Darwin Research Station, it is the hub of tourism in the islands. Puerto Ayora is far from the bustling cities on the mainland. The bay is full of sailboats, sea birds fill the air and marine iguanas line the shore. Though a thriving center of commerce people enjoy a laid back island attitude. Most travelers to the Galapagos will include a visit to Puerto Ayora during their trip. Most cruises include a visit to the Darwin Station and arrange free time to explore the town and shop for souvenirs. This may be the only opportunity to souvenir shop in the islands. Stores carry everything from t-shirts to jewelry, post cards, books, beach ware and ceramic items. The grocery store offers the opportunity to stock up on any forgotten items, snacks, beverages, or other items you might desire on board. If you are in need of additional money, the Banco del Pacifico offers cash advances on Master Card. They also offer a Cirrus ATM machine, though it does not always work. Puerto Ayora offers options for visitors who prefer to sleep ashore or extend their stay in the islands. There are a variety of tours available allowing visitors to design their own Galapagos experience including day-trips to a number of the islands, dive trips, kayaking, highland tours, hiking, mountain biking and horseback rides.
