We are in the UK and looking at a Cunard Alaska cruise in 2025 departing Seattle. We would be interested in other cruisers experience of arranging flights through Cunard. Do they offer better value than arranging yourself? It would be business class flights. Any advice would be great - thank you!

We decide on our flights eg airline/class of travel/ itinerary and have our TA package them in with the cruise onto one booking. Usually more expensive than booking them as separate items but gives us peace of mind if one part of the holiday throws up an issue.

We are going in a few days early, so we booked our own airfare. We booked a black Friday deal for significant savings. I

Not sure if Cunard Complete Air is the same in the UK but in the US the one way fares often can be a much better rate than booking the airline direct .Not sure about r/t?

I looked at flights from Newark to Vancouver for my Alaska cruise and for business, it was slightly less expensive to book for myself. I haven't booked yet--that's on my to-do list for this week. I'll call Cunard again, but it fheir rates are still higher than "rack rate," I'll do my own booking.

I have found that the best deals through Cunard are for one-way air to go with a one-way transatlantic.

Thanks

For our June 2024 Alaska voyage I booked via my credit card travel. Reasons: Used credit card points to help pay for flight and upgrade to UnitedFirst, wanted to fly direct from Newark to Vancouver, and generally I’m a control nerd with my itinerary. I’m not sure how much control I’ll have with Cunard air. We are also arriving/leaving Vancouver two days before and after to spend more time there and not worry and any transport delays.  Maybe someone can elaborate how much control one has by booking CunardAir. We’ve booked CunardAir before but frankly don’t remember the details.

We are like you from the UK, we originally booked the flights with Cunard via our very good independent TA, this was booked before the flights had been released by the airline.

When details of the Cunard flights were released our agent gave us the details and we were able to book direct with BA quite a lot cheaper, we even managed to get PE seats for less than the Cunard economy price, and the agent was able to cancel the Cunard flight.

We are sailing out of Vancouver for Alaska though, therefore our flights are London Gatwick to Vancouver.

We always book through Cunard and don't bother then checking the costs in isolation. Alike Victoria2 we want the peace of mind.

As  Kensington-cruiser is UK based, one assumes his/her question concerns UK bookings and as US v UK travel T&Cs and pricing can be so wildly different, US info is, as always,  interesting but not very pertinent here.

For UK info, if booking a one way flight, FF miles is the best option and also utilisation of the miles. Second best is probably a Cunard one way flight.

If booking a return, we were told many years ago, Cunard apparently can very occasionally give great deals on Business and First if they 'get a deal with an airline' but in our experience hen's teeth with pigs flying overhead spring to mind.

When booking, whilst there's no difference in choice of airline, routing, date and timing of flight if you book through Cunard [as you can dictate everything and have it all on the same booking as the cruise], there's no denying, it's usually more expensive than if you book it yourself.

You can self book yourselves a flight a few days before the cruise [very sensible] but you can do that with the Cunard booked flight if you want. What booking your own flight won't do is give peace of mind in this ever changing world, where conflict, strikes and weather can ground flights and re route ships,  if travel plans are screwed.

Like Craigrlewis , the peace of mind given that it's not our problem to solve outweighs any discounts we might find if we book flights ourselves.

@Kensington-cruiser  we too are looking at Alaska 2025 as its our ruby anniversary and my 60th if god spares me lol  😁  my DH hates flying long haul so i want direct flights only to Seattle, i noticed for our particular dates Cunard are offering air fares at £1500 per passenger. I looked up Virgin direct flights from heathrow and economy come out (based on this years dates as 2025 not available) came out at around £1900 return for both of us, i could use the extra money Cunard are charging to upgrade to premium economy. We also want to spend a couple days pre cruise so i think we'll be booking our own flights at this point. Can you add cunard air at a later date?

The flights are looking expensive at present. I'm looking at Tokyo to Seattle May 2025 and Cunard are £2,000. A quick check via my t/a retells me currently if I bought today for tte same time May 2024, ie relatively soon, the cost today is around £1600. I'm waiting.

That is a standard school of thought and it offers a higher degree of security should there be any delay in the airline flight and for short delays one can be sure the ship will wait. There was a well documented example on one of my facebook groups involving Cunard just before Christmas 2023:  and that was what one would accept as a simple flight London to New York.

There does seem to be a misconception however regarding Cunard and Travel Agent booked flights. The passenger is well protected when their cruise and flight are part of a 'Cunard fly/cruise package' arranged: whether sold by either Cunard or sold through a travel agent.

Not so when one uses a TA to arrange one's flight choice of a different airline flight, maybe a different flight dates,  and when one wishes to purchase a seat other than 'economy'.  The same rules will apply (as did in my earlier example),  and Cunard (or any other cruise line) will have no responsibility should there be a flight delay.

Of course its a good little earner for Cunard (or whatever cruise line) as they can block book return flights from port cities where both the cruise departs and returns to the same destination and similarly where the departure and arrival ports are different aka cruise turnover ports.

I can believe that. When we sailed with Cunard in 2019, Queen Victoria, Singapore to Cape Town I booked our flights independently and had four nights pre cruise in Singapore and the same post cruise in Cape Town.

The savings made over both the Cunard Fly Cruise price and a TA's, whom I tasked individually to find a package, paid for our 8 nights hotel accommodation at both ports while we had the bonus of choosing Singapore Airlines outbound and Emirates homebound.

Maybe someone can elaborate how much control one has by booking CunardAir. We’ve booked CunardAir before but frankly don’t remember the details.

Cunard Complete Air does state Late Arrival Protection and one Point of Contact.

No deposit required to book along with cruise reservation , no payment until 45 days prior to flight.

Once booked , seats may be assigned by calling the airline  or online @ the Airline site.

Unless you specifically want to spend time in Seattle, take a look at flights from London to Vancouver. The flight is about the same amount of time as London to Seattle.

We have booked to arrive in Vancouver a few days before our cruise departs, and with a little bit of smart booking we got an extra night post cruise, by traveling home a day later we were able to book a night in the Pan pacific hotel and still save money compared to the Cunard fare, therefore we shouldn't have any issues with flight delays affecting our cruise.

Well fingers crossed!!!!!

You sound like me. I want control and I do fly a few days early. It extends the vacation and gives me peace of mind (as does travel insurance). One of the things I like about doing my own booking is seat selection right away. IIRC, Cunard Air doesn't let you choose until final payment for the cruise. I think some airlines allow you to pay the airfare early in order to choose seats, but I don't know if they all do.

I have a lot of miles stored up. When DH died, it was worth the cost to move his miles to my account. Between proximity to Newark Airport and all those miles, United is my default airline.

Cunard Air doesn't let you choose until final payment for the cruise. I think some airlines allow you to pay the airfare early in order to choose seats, but I don't know if they all do.

I have used Cunard Choice Air several times and have always been able to choose my seats as soon as I booked the cruise and well before Final Payment.

I would feel better doing everything via Cunard but can’t use stores credit card points to shave off some of the cost. Unless I’m wrong about that?

I’m in the U.S. also, and I have been treating credit card points travel as a lucrative hobby for years. We fly eastbound transatlantic in business class on points whenever possible, spend a week or so either in the UK or in France with our son and his family, and then take the QM2 back to the U.S.  (Iberia cards have great signup bonuses and their off-season TA flights are very cheap for business.)

If you don’t have that much interest in playing the game, then you might consider booking via Cunard (if that’s your preference) on a Capital One Venture card, which would allow you to acquire 2 points per dollar and then erase that amount in travel expenses on the card.

Quite a bit of control, in my experience.  I've booked a flight, through Cunard, from Newark to Paris for several days before ship departure, and then came back to London via Eurostar.  And I never had any problems specifying Virgin Atlantic from EWR to LHR, back in the days when they flew that route.

WorkforBeerGuy

Two years ago, we took our first Cunard cruise, for a pair of milestone birthdays.  I had our TA book a westbound crossing in QG.  When flights were finally available, I asked our TA to book specific BA flight and seats from BOS to LHR, as well as AA flight from LGA to BOS at the end of the cruise.  I was monitoring BA's website and could see the desired seats being committed in real time.

In researching flights I could see that in many cases a one-way flight could be almost the same as a round trip ticket.  One advantage with Cunard Air is that one can mix and match airlines and could get reasonable one-way fares.  (For our next TA, I will seriously consider Amtrak Acela from NYC to PVD.)  And we didn't have to pay until T-4 months.

But we had one major issue.  A few weeks later, AA dropped the NYC/BOS shuttle.  AA rebooked us from LGA to Ronny RayGun DC airport, and then after a number of hours, finally from DCA to BOS.  Cunard Air dutifully sent us the new air booking.  They also did this every time BA modified their flight schedule.

The problem was that Delta also operated the NYC/BOS shuttle.  So I wanted Cunard Air to change the AA flights to a non-stop Delta flight.  The only way for Cunard Air to do this was to delete all flights and start over.  But when we originally booked the BA flight, we got a fantastic FC deal that was only about 20% over their idiotic Club World Business seating.

So there are good things and bad things about Cunard Air.

I always book our air separately and directly from the airline. I do check the cruise line's fares, but it's never been worth the additional risk and restrictions that come with getting a third party involved.

We've booked for Alaska 2025 with my parents (going to be a 40th birthday, a 60th birthday, a 65th birthday and a 10th wedding anniversary all within 2 months of our sailing so lots to celebrate!) and have also found the flights very expensive - £1.5k pp from London to Seattle including for our toddler who wouldn't have to pay full fare if we booked separately.

On advice from our TA we're holding tight until the flights are available and having another look then. They have said we can get Cunard to add the flight to the booking at that stage. We will fly out a few days in advance just in case of any delays and so we can explore Seattle before the cruise.

Cunard Line

cunard cruises with flights

At a glance

A storied line with roots that go back to the 1800s, this brand is perhaps best known for its 2,695-passenger flagship, Queen Mary 2. QM2 lives up to its billing as a true ocean liner with frequent transatlantic service between Southampton, England, and New York. Cunard fans love the line’s

relatively formal vibe (including nightly dress codes) and other nods to ocean-liner tradition, including afternoon tea and evenings with ballroom dancing.

The newest member of Cunard’s royal fleet, Queen Anne® , will set sail on her maiden voyage in May 2024, making her the fourth Cunard ship alongside Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria®, and Queen Elizabeth®. Queen Anne’s namesake reigned during a time of prosperity for England, and when she embarks on her inaugural four-month world voyage, guests will be treated to a suitably lavish experience.

Bookings must be made using an eligible Card and must be paid using that Card, or another American Express ®  Card, in the eligible Card Member's name, and that Card Member must be traveling on the itinerary booked. The average total value of the program benefits is based on prior-year bookings for stays of two nights; the actual value varies. Noon check-in and room upgrade are subject to availability and are provided at check-in; certain room categories are not eligible for upgrade. The type of experience credit or additional amenity (if applicable) varies by property; the experience credit will be applied to eligible charges up to the amount of the experience credit. Advance reservations are recommended for certain experience credits. The type and value of the daily breakfast (for two) varies by property; breakfast will be valued at a minimum of US$60 per room per day. If the cost of Wi-Fi is included in a mandatory property fee, a daily credit of that amount will be applied at check-out. Benefits are applied per room, per stay (with a three-room limit per stay). Back-to-back stays booked by a single Card Member, Card Members staying in the same room or Card Members traveling in the same party within a 24-hour period at the same property are considered one stay and are ineligible for additional FHR benefits (“Prohibited Action”). American Express and the Property reserve the right to modify or revoke FHR benefits at any time without notice if we or they determine, in our or their sole discretion, that you may have engaged in a Prohibited Action, or have engaged in abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with your FHR benefits. Benefit restrictions vary by property. Benefits cannot be redeemed for cash and are not combinable with other offers unless indicated. Benefits must be used during the stay booked. Any credits applicable are applied at check-out in USD or the local currency equivalent. Benefits, participating properties, and availability and amenities at those properties are subject to change. To be eligible for FHR program benefits, your eligible Card Account must not be cancelled. For additional information, call the number on the back of your Card.

The Hotel Collection Program:  The Hotel Collection (THC) benefits are available for new bookings of two consecutive nights or more made through American Express Travel with participating properties and are valid only for eligible U.S. Consumer and Business Gold Card, Platinum Card ®  Members, and Centurion ®  Members. Additional Card Members on Consumer and Business Platinum Card Accounts, and Additional Card Members on Consumer and Business Centurion Accounts are also eligible for THC program benefits. Delta SkyMiles ®  Gold and Platinum Card Members are not eligible. Bookings must be made using an eligible Card and must be paid using that Card, or another American Express ®  Card, in the eligible Card Member's name, and that Card Member must be traveling on the itinerary booked. Room upgrade is subject to availability and is provided at check-in; certain room categories are not eligible for upgrade. The type of experience credit or additional amenity (if applicable) varies by property; the experience credit will be applied to eligible charges up to $100. Advance reservations are recommended for certain experience credits. Benefit restrictions vary by property. Benefits are applied per room, per stay (with a three-room limit per stay). Back-to-back stays booked by a single Card Member, Card Members staying in the same room or Card Members traveling in the same party within a 24-hour period at the same property are considered one stay and are ineligible for additional THC benefits (“Prohibited Action”). American Express and the Property reserve the right to modify or revoke the THC benefits at any time without notice if we or they determine, in our or their sole discretion, that you have engaged in a Prohibited Action, or have engaged in abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with your THC benefits. To be eligible for THC program benefits, your eligible Card Account must not be cancelled. For additional information, call the number on the back of your Card.

$200 Hotel Credit: Basic Card Members on U.S. Consumer Platinum Card Account are eligible to receive up to $200 in statement credits per calendar year when they or Additional Platinum Card Members use their Cards to pay for eligible prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts® and The Hotel Collection bookings made through American Express Travel (meaning through amextravel.com, the Amex® App, or by calling the phone number on the back of your eligible Card) or when Companion Platinum Card Members on such Platinum Card Accounts pay for eligible prepaid bookings for The Hotel Collection made through American Express Travel (meaning through amextravel.com, the Amex® App, or by calling the phone number on the back of your eligible Card). Please note, access to the benefit may take up to 24 hours to take effect on your Card after Account opening. Purchases by both the Basic Card Member and any Additional Card Members on the Card Account are eligible for statement credits. However, the total amount of statement credits for eligible purchases will not exceed $200 per calendar year, per Card Account. Fine Hotels + Resorts® program bookings may be made only by eligible U.S. Consumer Basic Platinum and Additional Platinum Card Members. The Hotel Collection bookings may be made by eligible U.S. Consumer Basic and Additional Platinum Card Members and Companion Platinum Card Members on the Platinum Card Account. Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Card Members are not eligible for the benefit. To receive the statement credits, an eligible Card Member must make a new booking using their eligible Card through American Express Travel on or after July 1st, 2021, that is prepaid (referred to as "Pay Now" on amextravel.com and the Amex App), for a qualifying stay at an available, participating Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection property. Bookings of The Hotel Collection require a minimum stay of two consecutive nights. Eligible bookings must be processed before December 31st, 11:59PM Central Time, each calendar year to be eligible for statement credits within that year. Eligible bookings do not include interest charges, cancellation fees, property fees or other similar fees, or any charges by a property to you (whether for your booking, your stay or otherwise).

Statement credits are typically received within a few days, however it may take 90 days after an eligible prepaid hotel booking is charged to the Card Account. American Express relies on the merchant’s processing of transactions to determine the transaction date. The transaction date may differ from the date you made the purchase if, for example, there is a delay in the merchant submitting the transaction to us or if the merchant uses another date as the transaction date. This means that in some cases your purchase may not earn the statement credit benefit for the benefit period in which you made the purchase. For example, if an eligible purchase is made on December 31st but the merchant processes the transaction such that it is identified to us as occurring on January 1st, then the statement credit available in the next calendar year will be applied. Statement credits may not be received or may be reversed if the booking is cancelled or modified. If the Card Account is canceled or past due, it may not qualify to receive a statement credit. If American Express does not receive information that identifies your transaction as eligible, you will not receive the statement credits. For example, your transaction will not be eligible if it is a booking: (i) made with a property not included in the Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection programs, (ii) not made through American Express Travel, or (iii) not made with an eligible Card. Participating properties and their availability are subject to change. If American Express, in its sole discretion, determines that you have engaged in or intend to engage in any manner of abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with this benefit, American Express will not have an obligation to provide and may reverse any statement credits provided to you. If a charge for an eligible purchase is included in a Pay Over Time balance on your Card Account, the statement credit associated with that charge may not be applied to that Pay Over Time balance. Instead, the statement credit may be applied to your Pay In Full balance. Please refer to AmericanExpress.com/FHR and AmericanExpress.com/HC for more information about Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection, respectively.

5X Membership Rewards ®  Points Platinum Card:  Basic Card Members will get 1 Membership Rewards ®  point for each dollar charged for eligible purchases on their Platinum Card ®  or an Additional Card on their Account and 4 additional points (for a total of 5 points) for each dollar charged for eligible travel purchases on any Card on the Account (“Additional Points”), minus cancellations and credits. Eligible travel purchases are limited to: (i) purchases of air tickets on scheduled flights, of up to $500,000 in charges per calendar year, booked directly with passenger airlines or through American Express Travel (by calling 1-800-525-3355 or through AmexTravel.com); (ii) purchases of prepaid hotel reservations booked through American Express Travel; and (iii) purchases of prepaid flight+hotel packages booked through AmexTravel.com. Eligible travel purchases do not include: charter flights, private jet flights, flights that are part of tours, cruises, or travel packages (other than prepaid flight+hotel packages booked through AmexTravel.com), ticketing or similar service fees, ticket cancellation or change fees, property fees or similar fees, hotel group reservations or events, interest charges, or purchases of cash equivalents. Eligible prepaid hotel bookings or prepaid flight+hotel bookings that are modified directly with the hotel will not be eligible for Additional Points.

Bonuses that may be received with your Card on other purchase categories or in connection with promotions or offers from American Express cannot be combined with this benefit. Any portion of a charge that the Basic Card Member elects to cover through redemption of Membership Rewards points is not eligible to receive points. Additional terms and restrictions apply.

Merchants are assigned codes based on what they primarily sell. We group certain merchant codes into categories that are eligible for Additional Points. A purchase with a merchant will not earn Additional Points if the merchant’s code is not included in an Additional Points category. Basic Card Members may not receive Additional Points if we receive inaccurate information or are otherwise unable to identify your purchase as eligible for an Additional Points category. For example, you may not receive Additional Points when: a merchant uses a third-party to sell their products or services, a merchant uses a third-party to process or submit your transaction to us (e.g., using mobile or wireless card readers), or you choose to make a purchase using a third-party payment account or make a purchase using a mobile or digital wallet.

To be eligible for this benefit, the Card Account must not be cancelled. If American Express, in its sole discretion, determines that you have engaged in or intend to engage in any manner of abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with this benefit in any way American Express may remove access to this benefit from the Account. For additional information, call the number on the back of your Card or visit americanexpress.com/rewards-info for more information about rewards.

5X Membership Rewards Points for Business Platinum Card:  You will get one point for each dollar charged for an eligible purchase on your Business Platinum Card ®  from American Express. You will get 4 additional points (for a total of 5 points) for each dollar spent on eligible travel purchases. Eligible travel purchases include scheduled flights and prepaid flight+hotel packages made online at AmexTravel.com, minus returns and other credits. Additionally, eligible travel purchases include prepaid hotel purchases made through American Express Travel, over the phone with our Travel Consultants or made online at AmexTravel.com, minus returns and other credits. Eligible travel purchases do NOT include non-prepaid hotel bookings, scheduled flights and prepaid flight+hotel packages over the phone, vacation packages, car rentals, cruise, hotel group reservations or events, ticketing service, cancellation or other fees, interest charges, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, or purchases of other cash equivalents. To be eligible for the 5x Membership Rewards ®  points, you must both reserve and charge the travel purchase with the same eligible Business Platinum Card ® . To modify a reservation you must cancel and rebook your reservation. You can cancel and rebook your reservation on AmexTravel.com or by calling a representative of AmexTravel.com at 1-800-297-2977. Cancellations are subject to hotel cancellation penalty policies. If hotel reservations are made or modified directly with the hotel provider, the reservation will not be eligible for this 5X Membership Rewards ®  point benefit. To be eligible to receive extra points, Card account(s) must not be cancelled or past due at the time of extra points fulfillment. If booking is cancelled, the extra points will be deducted from the Membership Rewards account. Extra points will be credited to the Membership Rewards account approximately 6-10 weeks after eligible purchases appear on the billing statement. Bonuses you may receive with your Card on other purchase categories or in connection with promotions or offers from American Express may not be combined with this benefit. The benefits associated with the Additional Card(s) you choose may be different than the benefits associated with your basic Card. To learn about the benefits associated with Additional Card(s) you choose, please call the number on the back of your Card.

Merchants are assigned codes based on what they primarily sell. We group certain merchant codes into categories that are eligible for additional points. A purchase with a merchant will not earn additional points if the merchant’s code is not included in an additional points category. You may not receive additional points if we receive inaccurate information or are otherwise unable to identify your purchase as eligible for an additional points category. For example, you may not receive additional points when: a merchant uses a third-party to sell their products or services; or a merchant uses a third-party to process or submit your transaction to us (e.g., using mobile or wireless card readers); or you choose to make a purchase using a third-party payment account or make a purchase using a mobile or digital wallet.

Please visit  americanexpress.com/rewards-info  for more information about rewards.

Pay with Points:  To use Pay with Points, you must charge your eligible purchase through American Express Travel to a Membership Rewards ®  program-enrolled American Express ®  Card. Eligible purchases through American Express Travel exclude non-prepaid car rentals and non-prepaid hotels. Points will be debited from your Membership Rewards account, and credit for corresponding dollar amount will be issued to the American Express Card account used. If points redeemed do not cover entire amount, the balance of purchase price will remain on the American Express Card account. Minimum redemption 5,000 points.

See  membershiprewards.com/terms  for the Membership Rewards program terms and conditions.

If a charge for a purchase is included in a Pay Over Time balance on your Linked Account the statement credit associated with that charge may not be applied to that Pay Over Time balance. Instead the statement credit may be applied to your Pay in Full balance. If you believe this has occurred, please contact us by calling the number on the back of your Card. Corporate Card Members are not eligible for Pay Over Time.

Cunard flights -

Cool Cruiser

We have a cruise only booking with Cunard via a TA in the UK. We usually book the flights ourselves but decided to ask if Cunard could add flights and hotels. I think it's fair to say that it didn't go smoothly.

Initially, we were quoted 120pp to add on flights one way from the far east to Scotland via London - which seemed v low. Then Cunard phoned the TA and said it was the 120pp plus 450pp for a regional add on for London to Scotland. OK, anyone can make a mistake.

So we asked for Premium Economy flights and these were quoted via Paris but when the TA called to book them, theu said it was the price plus the regional deviation from London - even though this flight never goes to London.

They also quoted 500 to add hotels on and then when the TA called to book them said it was 1300!

It didn't help that the TA I was dealing with was unfamiliar with Cunard even though the company does a lot with them.

Do Cunard usually charge 460pp for adding on a flight as well as the flight cost? I think we'll go probably go ahead and do our own flights as we usually do.

Hi, it sounds like the cost of the flight was £460 and the regional add on was £120, not the other way around.

Host Hattie

This recent post reported problems with flights as well so it sounds as if Cunard are having a few problems in that department.

https://boards.cruisecritic.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2669588

I agree with ClanMclean, it sounds as if the price from London would be £460 with the regional add on as £120.

What would it cost if you booked it yourself ?

bluemarble

For what it's worth, when I start a booking on the Cunard UK site for the OP's voyage (M903A, Southampton to Singapore), I'm quoted airfare of £460.00 per person to London and £540.00 per person to either Edinburgh or Glasgow. So the £460.00 fare to London matches, but the add-on fare for Scotland is showing as only £80.00 at the moment when selecting flights and transfers at the time of booking. Not sure what accounts for that difference.
The OP says she's flying from the "far east of Scotland" so my guess would be they are connecting from Aberdeen, which would account for the extra cost.

OK, that makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.

The original post was "far east to Scotland" !

Right, and the OP is on the roll call for voyage M903A Southampton to Singapore, so that's how I concluded that's the voyage under discussion here. I suppose the point could still be well taken though that the OP might be talking about arranging a return flight to an airport in Scotland other than Edinburgh or Glasgow to incur an additional £40.00 add-on cost.

😂 lol ooops

In that case maybe the extra cost is due to using a carrier other than the BA network.

I’m curious as to which agent didn’t think to question the original quote of £120 from London to Asia!?! I’m wondering if this was confusion from the agent rather than Cunard.

Update: Got a call today from the TA saying that Cunard had listened to the phone calls and apologized for their agent had wrongly quoted the flights and the hotels.

To their credit, Cunard said that if I booked with them, they'd give us $200 OBC for the inconvenience. Given that the prices were a bit all over the place, I probably will book flights myself, but it was a nice gesture.

I am on the 10 Jan 2019 QM2 Southampton to Singapore trip so the flights I look for are pretty much anything that brings me back to a Scottish airport as I live within 3 hours of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

Thanks for the update, have a great trip

Elephant1151

We are on the Southampton to Hong Kong sector. Initially quoted £320 pp for the flights when we booked the cruise onboard. Two months later the flights had increased to £370 so booked them. This price includes the transfer and is with Etihad to Heathrow.

Wellard

I spoke with Cunard recently asking if I can book a OW- LHR to NYC, for my sail back to Southampton... if they had a flight booking system ( like Celebrity’s “Choice Air”)

I was told: NO! As I booked via an agent, they would have to book flights...

so I booked flights myself at a very good rate & without the hassle of deal with an agent.

Cunard Alaska: An Overview Of Our Journey

Posted on July 10, 2023 July 17, 2023 Author Chris Owen

We recently completed a wonderful Alaska cruise with Cunard Line , our first since May of 2006. Throughout the voyage, we shared the experience on all our socials every step of the way as we went from place to place. Today, let us dig a bit deeper with a number of posts here, beginning with an overview of our journey.

cunard cruises with flights

Travel Day From Orlando To Vancouver

This has been a tough summer for airlines. Still struggling to rebuild post-covid staffing in every department from flight attendants to captains, delays and cancellations made headlines.  For many, what might have been international travel turned into a road trip.  Nothing against road trips.  But if a visit to an iconic landmark somewhere around the globe was the plan, a road trip does not satisfy that itch. Helpful in this situation: I always fly business class no matter what, whenever possible. In addition to a more comfortable seat and onboard amenities, it also gives us a bit of an advantage over travelers in other classes when it comes to rebooking, flight delays, and/or cancellations.

cunard cruises with flights

It all started with a 2 AM check of my flight plan on the day of travel.  I just happened to wake up and thought “ With all this talk of problems in the air, check to see if anything has changed ”.   Glad I looked.  My entire flight schedule from Orlando to Vancouver had been canceled by the airline.

Immediately, I called United directly. This was a travel day.  Any flight disruptions that might occur are going to get settled between me and the airline. There is very little our travel agents can do for us in this situation. My flights were canceled and while United said they were working on rebooking me, this was the start of a really long 4th of July weekend.  Planes were already sold out. There were very few options for rebooking.

Here is where Air Canada swooped in as the solution. It would make for a longer, less direct flight plan…but it looked more likely to actually fly. Via text messaging, it was me working directly with the airline and the new plan was in place in minutes.

cunard cruises with flights

In “ Travel With Only Carry-On Luggage: Here’s How ”, we talk about being prepared for travel.  This situation is one reason why.  Getting from Orlando to Vancouver is best described as a fistfight.  I’ve never been in an actual fistfight. I more often choose to barter my way out of what might turn into a fistfight.  Still, now routed through Toronto on Air Canada, flights were stacked up to land.

At the end of a long travel day, I arrived in Vancouver and was in a lovely room at the Fairmont Hotel by midnight.

Within view of my room; the C anada Place Cruise Ship Terminal cruise port we would sail away from in a few hours.

Sailing Away From Vancouver – Day At Sea

It’s been a minute since we have sailed on a ship of this size that carries this many crew and travelers.  It was 2006 when our one and only other Cunard sailing but the takeaways have endured time.  Or so I thought.   Some elements of the experience have indeed evolved as I noticed rather quickly on Queen Elizabeth .

cunard cruises with flights

Like so many of us, I’ve spent a lifetime evolving into whatever it is I am today. So too has Cunard line, embracing its storied history while charting a clear path toward the future.  Common elements of the experience germane to travel by ship remain.  Today we sailed away from Vancouver and will spend two days on the ship before our first Alaskan port of call in Sitka.

It was hard not to think of sailing with sister line Princess Cruises on the first-ever Alaska Follow Me At Sea Twitter trip.  That unique sailing ushered in the era of social media as it relates to travel.

cunard cruises with flights

As we sailed away, our attention was refocused on this big ship and all it has to offer.  On this day, there were 57 line-item events on the schedule from which to choose.  It would be impossible to do them all.  So the ability to customize the voyage for individual interests is still very much alive and well if not more than in the past.

cunard cruises with flights

Backing up until just before sailing away, Cunard’s evolved safety protocols were playing on my stateroom TV when I walked on the ship. The plan: visit my Assembly Station where my Voyage card would be scanned, proving I had enough between my ears to figure out where to go on my own.  Later in the afternoon,  the Captain’s Emergency Broadcast tied it all together as guest services stopped for this important event.  Easy.  Evolved.

cunard cruises with flights

Also evolved was the ship’s dress code.  My takeaway from our only other Cunard sailing was that for all practical purposes, every night is a formal night.  While Cunard does indeed encourage and support those who choose to dress to the nines, they’re not throwing people out of the dining room in less formal attire.  Quite the contrary, passengers are reminded daily of alternative dining options that are less formal. In other words, I could have left the formal wear at home and satisfied evening dress requirements with a collared shirt and nice slacks.

cunard cruises with flights

Today was another day at sea, bringing bonus time to explore the magnificent Queen Elizabeth from top to bottom.  Tonight would cap off a relaxing day with the first of two truly formal nights, this one themed an Ice White Gala Evening .

cunard cruises with flights

Interestingly, while other cruise lines are promoting their experience as less formal all the time, Cunard goes a different direction.  Passengers are encouraged to choose white, silver, or blue gala evening attire.  While they’re at it, maybe add some diamonds or silver jewelry from a ship’s store for some bonus bling action.  The entire day was spent in preparation for Ice White Gala Evening with some passengers dressed up before lunch.

cunard cruises with flights

Now if you’re reading this and thinking “Formal nights?? No thanks!” , hear me out. Again, it is not required for anyone to dress up for the evening and alternative dining and live entertainment options of a more casual nature are plentiful as well.

cunard cruises with flights

Other noteworthy highlights promote the day’s theme and included:

  • Ice White Featured Films On Stateroom TV
  • A Port Presentation for Sitka, Juneau, and Ketchikan
  • Line Dancing
  • Watercolour* Class
  • Team Trivia
  • Cunard Insights Lectures on Stateroom TV
  • Bridge Lessons
  • Ballroom Dance Class that I should have attended says my performance on the dance floor
  • Croquet Tournament and yes they do have Paddleball
  • A Photo Scavenger
  • A Showing of the film Top Gun Maverick
  • A Noon Navigational Announcement by the Captain that would happen every day

cunard cruises with flights

All of the above and a number of less notable events were scheduled before lunch. So yes, there was plenty to do.

Tracy Arm Fjord

On the fourth day of our Alaska cruise, we were again at sea but this time scenic cruising through Tracy Arm Fjord .

cunard cruises with flights

Tracy Arm Fjord is a 30-mile-long fjord located in the Tongass National Forest of southeastern Alaska, about 45 miles south of Juneau. The fjord is named after Benjamin Franklin Tracy , the U.S. Secretary of the Navy from 1889 to 1893.

cunard cruises with flights

Tracy Arm Fjord is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Alaska. It is known for its stunning beauty, remote wilderness setting, and abundance of wildlife. The fjord is home to two glaciers, Sawyer Glacier and South Sawyer Glacier , which calve icebergs into the emerald-green waters of the fjord.

cunard cruises with flights

Wildlife in Tracy Arm Fjord is abundant. Visitors may see whales (no), bears (no), seals (no), eagles (yes), and other animals. Also popular: kayaking, hiking, and fishing.

cunard cruises with flights

Cruises through the fjord typically last for 5-6 hours and allow travelers to see the glaciers, wildlife, and other natural wonders of the fjord.

Interesting facts about Tracy Arm Fjord:

  • The fjord is home to the largest tidewater glacier in the United States, Sawyer Glacier.
  • The fjord is part of the Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness, which is a federally protected wilderness area.
  • The fjord is a popular destination for whale watching. Humpback whales, orcas, and other species of whales can be seen in the fjord during the summer months.
  • The fjord is also a popular destination for bird watching. Bald eagles, puffins, and other species of birds can be seen in the fjord year-round.
  • The fjord is a challenging but rewarding place to kayak. Kayakers can paddle through the narrow channels of the fjord and get up close to the glaciers.
  • The fjord is a beautiful place to hike. Hikers can enjoy stunning views of the glaciers, mountains, and waterfalls.
  • The fjord is a great place to fish. Salmon, halibut, and other fish can be caught in the fjord.

On the fifth day of our luxury Cunard Alaska cruise , we visited Sitka where I got off the ship for a tour focused on finding wildlife in their natural habitat. Also on tap, was a variety of informative talks on board Queen Elizabeth as we cruise toward the end of our sailing.

cunard cruises with flights

In 1867 the United States purchased Alaska from the Russians. The transfer of ownership ceremony from that event was held in Sitka. That made Sitka Alaska’s first capital city. At the time, Sitka was accessible only by air or sea.  Now, cruise ships visit Sitka as one of the most popular stops on Alaska itineraries. Appealing features include magnificent scenery, fishing, hiking, and abundant wildlife…which we saw on our first tour of the trip, a wildlife hunt and crab feast.

cunard cruises with flights

Our tour happened on the water around Sitka where we saw a number of bald eagles and whale parts .  Frankly, if you’re thinking you’ll capture a whale leaping from the water, that probably won’t happen.

cunard cruises with flights

Sighting magnificent American bald eagles in their natural habitat is truly breathtaking and very doable.  I’ve done Alaska several times and seen them on each. Whales are another matter.

cunard cruises with flights

Hold a starfish? Yes, you can.

The images we see of giant whales leaping from the water and then apparently posing for photos are rather difficult to capture. Partial whale sightings will happen on most tours and do indeed give you an idea of just how large they are.

Juneau is the capital city of Alaska and is located in the southeastern part of the state. The city is situated on a narrow isthmus between the Gastineau Channel and the Lynn Canal and is surrounded by mountains. Juneau is the most populous city in the Alexander Archipelago and the sixth-largest city in Alaska.

cunard cruises with flights

Juneau is known for its stunning natural beauty, with mountains, glaciers, and rainforests. The city is also home to a number of historical and cultural attractions, including the Alaska State Museum , the Juneau-Douglas City Museum , and the Alaska State Capitol .

cunard cruises with flights

Juneau is a popular destination for outdoor recreation, with opportunities for hiking, kayaking, fishing, and whale watching. The city is also a popular cruise ship destination, and they all offer excursions to nearby attractions, such as Mendenhall Glacier and Tracy Arm Fjord.

Here are some other interesting things to do in Juneau:

  • Take a walk or bike ride on the Mendenhall Valley Trail, which offers stunning views of the Mendenhall Glacier.
  • Visit the Alaska State Museum, which houses exhibits on the history and culture of Alaska.
  • Highly Recommended: Take a flightseeing tour of the Juneau area, which offers stunning views of the city, mountains, and glaciers.
  • Go whale watching in the Gastineau Channel, where you can see humpback whales, orcas, and other marine mammals.
  • Hike to the top of Mount Roberts for stunning views of the city and the surrounding area.
  • Visit the Juneau-Douglas City Museum, which houses exhibits on the history of Juneau.
  • Take a boat tour of Tracy Arm Fjord, a potential UNESCO World Heritage Site. (There are currently no UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the state of Alaska. However, there are several natural and cultural sites under consideration: Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, and the historic mining town of Kennecott.)

Ketchikan

Ketchikan is known for its rainforests, totem poles, and fishing. It is the fourth-largest city in Alaska and the largest city in the Ketchikan Gateway Borough . Ketchikan is located on Revillagigedo Island, at the head of the Ketchikan Narrows , which connect the Inside Passage and the Pacific Ocean. At our Noon briefing, Cunard Captain Tomislav Bozic explained that we would be passing through the narrows at night, a sight worthy of getting up to see.

cunard cruises with flights

Ketchikan is the rainiest city in North America, with an average annual rainfall of 153 inches. However, the rain doesn’t dampen the city’s beauty or charm. Ketchikan is home to a lush rainforest, with towering trees and abundant wildlife. Interestingly, it was the only day on our sailing that featured abundant sunshine. The city is also home to a number of totem poles, which are carved wooden pillars that are used by the Tlingit and Haida people to tell stories and record history.

cunard cruises with flights

Ketchikan is also a major fishing port, known for its salmon fishing. The city is also a popular destination for halibut and crab fishing. In addition to fishing, Ketchikan is also a popular destination for hiking, kayaking, and whale watching. The city is surrounded by mountains, forests, and waterways, which offer plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation.

cunard cruises with flights

Here are some other interesting things to do in Ketchikan:

  • Take a walk on Creek Street, a historic boardwalk that was once home to the city’s red light district.
  • Visit the Ketchikan Raptor Center, a non-profit organization that rehabilitates injured birds of prey.
  • Take a boat tour of the Misty Fiords National Monument, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Go whale watching in the Inside Passage.
  • Hike to the top of Deer Mountain for stunning views of the city and the surrounding area.
  • Visit the Totem Heritage Center, which houses a collection of totem poles and other artifacts from the Tlingit and Haida people.
  • Take a flightseeing tour of the area which, to me, is a must-do at some point in your Alaska cruise. There is only so much we can see from ground level.

Ketchikan was also the place where the most enjoyable shore excursion of the trip happened. A Wildlife Cruise & King Crab Snack would end up defining the voyage in many ways, demanding a separate post just about that tour. Still, a few images from that marvelous experience:

Day Eight- At Sea

Our final day on Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth would be spent at sea which I think made for a nearly perfect itinerary. Being at sea allowed me to explore areas of the ship I had still not seen, pack, say goodbye to friends made onboard, and wrap up the cruise quite nicely.

Now back home in Orlando, I’m looking back at our Cunard Alaska sailing from a number of angles. In the coming days, I’ll share those thoughts along with must-have information about Alaska in general and getting the most out of your Cunard cruise, sure to be the trip of a lifetime.

When cruises are cheaper than trains and planes

P lanes, trains and automobiles may be the obvious and often most cost-effective ways to get from A to B but, surprisingly, cruise ships can be, too.

Repositioning sailings are the unsung bargains of the cruise world, where canny travellers can often pick up voyages at vastly reduced rates – and give more orthodox forms of transport a run for their money.

The key to finding such a deal comes from studying cruise schedules for sailings – some of which may be just one or two nights – that go directly from one place to another.

While low-cost flights are generally accepted as the cheapest way to travel internationally, global airfares are on the rise – and by the time you pile on charges for luggage, food and drink and the cost of travelling from the airport to the city centre – where cruise ships invariably dock – taking the sea-going route can emerge as the unlikely winner (and you’ll arrive in considerably more style).

It can even work for travelling to different parts of the UK, though options tend to be restricted to Fred Olsen Cruise Lines when it repositions ships on overnight voyages between the likes of Southampton and Newcastle, Rosyth or other ports further north.

Italy to Spain from £54

For city-hopping stays in and around Europe, MSC Cruises is the one to watch, as it enables customers to book many of its Mediterranean cruises on a port-to-port basis, rather than taking the entire voyage.

For instance, travellers can book one-nighters between Genoa and Barcelona or Genoa and Marseilles for as little as £54pp, while an overnight sailing between Valencia and Marseilles is £72pp, with these prices obviously including meals. The £54 figure is based on an October 11 departure. For a flight from Genoa to Barcelona on the same date, Skyscanner (skyscanner.net) quotes a service with ITA Airways for £111.99pp, including luggage.

Tony Andrews, the managing director of travel agency cruise.co.uk, says: “MSC doesn’t talk about this enough, as these one-nighters are a great way for people to have a city-break-style experience with a cruise as part of it. It’s a really interesting way to do it.”

The leisurely way to cross the pond

Transatlantic crossings are another potential area to pick up a sea-going bargain, but it’s a question of waiting until the price is right, as rates continually fluctuate.

Many lines offer transatlantic repositionings in spring and autumn, while Cunard runs the only regular crossings between Southampton and New York on its liner Queen Mary 2.

On one occasion some years ago, when prices dropped to just a few hundred pounds, I was sailing from Southampton on the QM2 and met a passenger who had opted to do the same purely because the rates were so much cheaper than flying and he wasn’t in a rush (the crossing takes a week).

Cunard’s prices have since risen overall, but there are still reduced rates on some departures that make this tactic worth pursuing if you fancy a more leisurely way to cross the pond.

Alison Earnshaw, the managing director of online agencies Cruise 118 and Six Star Cruises, says that when rates drop to £600 or £700, taking the ocean route becomes more cost-effective as transatlantic flights have become so expensive.

Another plus is the lack of luggage restrictions, because on cruises you can famously take as much as will fit in your cabin.

“We’ve had people booking to sail to see family in the States with lots of luggage that they’re taking out for them, and then flying back lighter,” she explains. “Alternatively, we’ve had customers who’ve flown to New York for the shopping and sail back as they can bring as much as they want.”

Swap Blighty for Barbados – for £1,129

The Caribbean is another region that comes up trumps for value, with P&O Cruises offering a two-week repositioning voyage from Southampton to Barbados (with stops in Antigua, St Kitts and St Lucia) from £1,129. This price is for an October 18 departure, and includes the flight back to Britain.

A return fare to Barbados with British Airways (including luggage) during the same period is £733pp. Inter-island flights with Caribbean Airlines (caribbean-airlines.com) between Barbados and other islands in this itinerary amount to approximately £714pp. Add in hotel stays and it’s clear just how much you can save by taking to the water.

Going global

Miles Morgan, the founder of Miles Morgan Travel, cited world cruises as another option for good-value deals, when cruise companies carve itineraries into segments if they haven’t been selling well, enabling customers to buy legs such as Sydney to Singapore.

“You need to look at sailings a few months in advance, as this is when they tend to be carved up,” he says. “So look now for autumn sailings and at Christmas for the spring. There might be nothing going or you might do well.”

I soon found a 17-night sector of a world cruise on Cunard’s Queen Victoria, departing Singapore on March 26 and arriving in Cape Town on April 12. It calls at Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Port Elizabeth in South Africa. From £1,099pp, not including flights, it works out at £64pp a night – about the same as a Travelodge.

Flights for the same routing between Singapore and Cape Town for the same time period via Skyscanner amount to approximately £1,150pp, including luggage. Another win for the cruise.
