LGBTQ+ Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

So you’ve heard about Mykonos and the wild parties , you’ve dreamt about strolling through Santorini side-streets holding hands , and imagined sitting on a beach under the stars cocktail in hand listening to the sound of the waves… together in Greece.

Mykonos may have won over the gay crowds in the ’70s onwards, but LGBTQ+ travelers to Greece now have a wide range of gay-friendly destinations to choose from.

LGBTQ+ Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

Whether you’re the intellectual type, the art lover or the beach bum, Greece is among the  most welcoming gay-friendly countries in Europe,  and is slowly but steadily evolving into a community of openness and inclusion .

There’s no doubt about it, tourism has played a major role over the decades in changing attitudes and fostering acceptance . Civil unions with some (not all) rights and protections were legalized for same-sex couples in 2015; two years later, transgender people were granted the right to change their legal gender without having to undergo surgical alteration; and in 2018, a law allowed same-sex couples the right to foster care children. Earlier this year, Greece became the first Orthodox Christian country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage, the 16th in the EU, and the 37th nation globally to do so enabling same-sex couples to legally adopt children. So yes. we’ve come a long way.

So yes, many Greek same-sex couples live openly and publicly and happily among family, friends and colleagues in a society that is taking step – albeit baby steps  – towards gay liberation .

►  5 + 1 Reasons to Visit Greece ASAP

🌈 On February 15, 2024, Greece legalized same-sex marriage and the adoption of children by same-sex couples. The Greek LGBTQ+ community welcomed the landmark decision , which marks a historic moment for the country’s human rights . Greece is the 16 th  country in the European Union to legalize same-sex unions and the first Orthodox nation to do so.

Q&A: LGBTQ+ Travel to Greece

LGBTQ+ Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

1. Is Greece a Good Choice for Gay Travelers?

Absolutely. Though some people still appear to be surprised when snuggling or kissing in public is involved, for the most part Greeks won’t really care what you do in your bed and your life, as long as you spare them the details.

The determining factor that makes Greece a great place to visit with your partner or spouse is its age-old hospitality.

Yes, here too the  powerful tradition of Greek hospitality  or “ philoxenia ” – ingrained in the majority of Greeks – will conquer and surpass any latent narrow-mindedness, which was probably more common among older folks or in isolated areas.

2. Is Greece safe for LGBTQ+ travelers?

Greece is among the safest countries in Europe , and among the most popular destinations for LGBTQ+ travelers. This said, I should add however, that as is the case when traveling anywhere else in the world,  much of our experience depends on our own responsibility.  Which means that we should always practice common sense . And this rule applies to all travelers. As for Greek islands and villages, due to tourism, the majority of Greek destinations are open and welcoming.

3. Can I walk around holding hands with my partner?

LGBTQ+ Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

Of course you can. Especially in the popular tourist areas or on the islands. But be prepared to come across   some people, mostly older generations, who – still uncomfortable with public displays of same-sex affection – will stare. Staring in general is also common practice particularly in remote villages so don’t let that put you off. It’s just part of the routine in small communities when someone “ new” comes to town . It happens to all of us, Greek or non-Greek. So ignore. Once you people get to know you, they will only smile.

► This is Why You Should Visit Mykonos After All?

4. what are the best places to visit as an lgbtq+ traveler in greece.

LGBTQ+ Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

It goes without saying that there is no one ‘best’ place in Greece to visit as LGBTQ+ visitors are as welcome as any other of the country’s 32 million annual guests.

LGBTQ+ travelers to Greece will be  spoiled for choice.  Not so much for the crazy gay life and partying (re: Mykonos) but now more so for the feeling of  connection and community . This is why I recommend leaving Mykonos and Santorini for later and opting to visit  smaller, lesser-known islands  and mainland seaside destinations where you can live like a local and  experience first-hand  Greek life at its best.

Yes, Mykonos and Paros are ideal to see and be seen, check out the cool guy or sexy gal, but the latest fad places to be are less popular and off the beaten track and at the same time, you’ll have the beaches, the culture, the food, and of course, the people.

7  Must-visit Gay-friendly Vacation Spots in Greece

LGBTQ+ Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

► Milos –  This once inconspicuous Cyclades island is evolving into the ultimate Greek LGBTQ+ destination thanks to its fantastic beaches, traditional villages and great food.

► Lesvos –  For the girls (and boys), this island is the birthplace of the great Greek poet  Sappho . Among the largest Greek islands with dozens of traditional villages, magnificent beaches and also home to the most famous  ouzo . Besides hosting the  International Eressos Women’s Festival  – held annually on Lesvos’ largest, sandiest beach – it hosts global meditation and wellness camps too.

► Pelion –  A magical mountain and its villages, Mt Pelion could easily be described as  heaven on earth.  A must for all travelers and a favorite for gay holidaymakers, particularly the secluded coves along the Mt Pelion’s coastline. You wake up in a romantic village nestled in the woods and minutes later, you’re swimming in soul-soothing waters with lush green forests as a backdrop.

► Folegandros –  Tiny and far away, Folegandros has been winning over the gay crowds in the last couple of years with its isolated beaches and hiking trails. Add to that a “Hora” (capital of the island) that is post-card perfect as if taken out of a theater set and you have the perfect destination for relaxation and immersion.

►  5 Quiet Greek Islands to Visit if You Want to Relax

► Galaxidi –  Another mainland destination, Galaxidi is a charming little coastal town brimming with perfectly preserved neoclassical homes and captain’s mansions (“kapetanospita”). A stroll along it’s picturesque port, a dive in the crystal clear (and cold) waters, bicycle riding and exploring the ancient sanctuary of Delphi nearby are just some of the things you can do there.

► Astypalaia –  Also small and obscure, this Greek island attracts lots of busybodies seeking to get away from it all or artsy types looking for inspiration. The island’s spectacular Hora and its castle stands atop a hill overlooking the deep blue like a cherry on a cake. With its special aura, pebbly beaches and orange sunsets, Astypalaia will win you over. And some trivia: believe it or not, a few years back excavations on Astypalaia brought to light what is believed to be the world’s oldest graffiti depicting  gay sex.

► Monemvasia –  On the mainland again, Monemvasia is a  fairytale experience  – a Medieval fortress built on a tiny island linked by a moat to the mainland. Situated in Laconia, near  Sparta  in the Peloponnese. You can stay inside the fort in a renovated tower. A stay in Monemvasia gives you a chance to discover beautiful beaches, the nearby island of Elafonissos, hike Mt Parnon, visit Kastania Cave, and of course, explore Mani,

Commit or tie the knot.

LGBTQ+ Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

As of late, Greece has become a top destination to tie the knot or to commit. Actually,  commitment ceremonies  by the beach are all the rage with several specialized event companies in Greece planning the whole thing for you.

► 5+1 Reasons to Marry or Honeymoon in Greece

Take a gay cruise to greece or hire a sail boat.

Gay cruises love Greece. But besides booking with huge cruise line companies, you can always arrange mini-cruises on the spot, take a day cruise , or board a three-day or five-day cruise from Athens and visit more islands in one go… plus enjoy the luxury and pampering of a cruise adventure. Besides cruising you can also discover the Greek islands by sailboat. Rent a sailboat (or yacht) complete with discreet skipper (or crew) and set off for your sailing escapades in Greece. Renting a sail boat in Greece is relatively doable. It costs as much as a good hotel and if there’s a group of four or six, it’s affordable and unforgettable.

►Taking a cruise is a fantastic way to get a taste of Greece. Contact Greece’s first LGBTQ+-friendly cruise agency allCruises.gr and ask for Eleni or Michalis. Tell them Maria from The Greek Vibe sent you and make sure to use your  promo code GV23.

Go camping .

If you’re the  outdoorsy type , then camping in Greece is a must. Plus camping crowds are overall more open and more accepting (as long as you avoid August). Didn’t bring a tent? No worries, many campsites across Greece rent out tents or caravans. You can even opt for the more luxurious  glamping  (glamor + camping) experience. I use these guys to find the best sites to ‘set up camp ‘.

Participate in Gay Events

LGBTQ+ Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

The annual Gay Pride Parade in Athens and Thessaloniki and events which take place in Athens every year in June and the   International Eressos Women’s Festival   held annually on the island of Lesvos in September are a great chance to mingle while on holiday.

Go on a Road Trip

If adventure and independence is your thing, then rent a car and travel the Greek mainland (Peloponnese, Epirus, Halkidiki, Pelion, Mani – to name a few). You won’t regret it. There’s so much to see and do  and with the help of gay booking sites you can arrange accommodation. Or if you’re like me, you can plan as you go, stopping in places that strike a chord.

Maria’s tips.

LGBTQ+ Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

✔︎ If you haven’t used gay-focused booking apps or are visiting an off-the-grid destination like a remote island or village in the mountains, don’t be surprised if you book a room with a double bed and upon arrival the host scrambles to change it into two singles. It’s really more due to inexperience rather than non-acceptance. And this is probably more likely in remote, non-touristy areas.

✔︎ Believe it or not, nudist travelers are more likely to face more unrelenting stares than gay couples. I have noticed, however, that usually Greek beaches popular with naturists are also very much preferred and frequented by LGBTQ+ travelers.

✔︎ People in the villages on the mainland tend to be a bit more conservative. Think San Francisco and Jacksonville. So give them time and show understanding. Many of the smaller, distant island or mountain villages got electricity in the late ’80s.

►   10 Plus 1 Nudist Beaches in Greece

✔︎ Very much depends on the season you visit . If you want to have beaches all to yourself, enjoy milder weather, pay lower prices and bump into fewer crowds, I would suggest visiting in May and June or September and early October . You could, of course, do Greece in winter too, which is a whole new experience in itself.

✔︎ Before you decide to visit Greece I suggest thinking about what type of holiday will make you and your partner happy . Do you want to explore? Then do it alone. Do you want to be taken on special-interest tours (for example focused on art, food, wine, archaeology) without the hassle? Then contact one of the many  agencies in Greece  offering specially catered day tours. Do you just want to chill out by the beach? Then book a room at a seaside hotel in a small island town. Do you want a hotel, room, trailer, tent, cruise?

✔︎ Instances of disrespect, bullying or hateful behaviour are rare. Should this occur however make sure to report it.

► 10 Ways to Experience the Best of Greece in Athens

✔︎ Last but not least, I do recommend you stay in Athens  for two or three days. Book a room at one of the many new boutique hotels in the heart of the Greek capital and take a stroll around the historic center. The archaeological sites, the Acropolis, dining and catching a film at an open-air cinema or a concert at the ancient Irodion Theater are plenty to keep you happy. And of course, don’t miss the gay nightlife (which I promise to cover in a future post). Until then, start planning your #nextgreeceadventure !

Still don’t know where to go. Yeah, I’m on holiday to see nature but since I’m nearly the only lesbian in the Netherlands and they other can’t be found, I wanna meet some lesbians my age! I still don’t know where I’m guaranteed to meet them.

Hi, Renee. You could try visiting Lesvos in September for the Eressos Women’s Festival and the Queer Ranch Festival again on Lesvos end of May or visit Athens.

Just breathtaking knowledge you have to put all this together….I will repost it on Worldwidegreeks for you!So much fun with the gay community in Mykonou from way back 98…

Thank you for the kind words, Hash and for supporting TheGreekVibe.com. Glad you enjoyed the read and thanks for sharing!

Nice write up, but what are the best gay friendly bars and shops in Athens? Any recomendations? I know about Gazi area, but which bars and shops for sex essentials or places for cruising are the most known?

Thanks, Stef, glad you enjoyed the read. The Gazi area in central Athens is LGBTQ happening scene with lots of bars and clubs. As for cruising, Zappeio Park around and near the fountain is your safest bet. Shops for sex essentials or saunas can be found around Gazi, Keramikos, and Omonia Square mostly, but due to Covid may be closed. You can also check https://www.facebook.com/GayGreece

Gay Cruises in Greece

gay cruises to greece

Going on a cruise is one of the most fun and relaxing holidays you can ever do. On a gay cruise, the whole boat is full of LGBT guests and all crew has been properly trained to offer you with a warm and gay-friendly experience. It’s a very open-minded environment to be and one where you can have fun and relax both mentally and physically. The place is friendly with a nice atmosphere and there are great games onboard. Of course, with such a nice surroundings on board, we should mention that it is breathtaking to island hop around the spectacular Greek islands with your private yacht. There will be days that you will wake up nude, anchored at a private secluded bay and there will be no sign of civilization around. You can select one of our small ships for a more intimate feeling. An experience where you board a ship and meet new people and at the end of your gay cruise, you will be with a group of new friends that have shared together a great experience, an experience that will last forever.

Gay Cruise

Is a Gay Cruise the thing to do?

First, you will need to see whether joining a cruise, in general, is something you would like to do. Not everyone likes sailing due to the nature of the experience, being at sea most of the time, but a great number of people actually do. Second of all if taking a cruise surely is at your interest, next you’ll need to see if you want a gay cruise or a normal ordinary cruise. But what are the main differences on a gay cruise versus an ordinary one?

Here are a few bullet points to help you do so:

  • Your private ensuite cabin, on board meals and entertainment are included usually in the price ( not always the case)
  • The ship will be exclusively chartered by LGBT guests.
  • Gay cruises can be a little bit pricy than ordinary ones due to the prearranged parties and unique feeing onboard

With Sail in Greece you have the option to join which ever works best for you. Hence, there is no need to puzzle that much!

How to Book a Gay Cruise?

First of all if you are a group of gay friends and you wish to charter your own yacht you can simply email us with your travel details and our team will be able to quote you with 1 business day. Please email us here : [email protected] Here you can find our fleet : Sail in Greece gulet fleet

If you are just 2 or about people and not able to privately charter one of our whole yachts, we do work with few trusted gay cruise tour operators who charter our yachts for their cruises and specialize only on gay cruises. Their cruises are on selected departure dates on multiple different Greek destinations. You simply email us and then we will be able to check with them availability and rates and inform you for all your options. Mykonos, Greece: Why You’ll Love This LGBTQ-Friendly Paradise

gay cruises to greece

The Island of Winds will truly blow your hair back.

Spain has Gran Canaria. The States? Fire Island. And if you crave a gay island escape in Thailand you’ll head for Phuket. But when in Greece (one of the first places on Earth to embrace homosexuality – way back in the 7th century BCE), a modern Mary should set sail for Mykonos. As it happens, we’ll soon visit on our Aegean Sea Gay Cruise . Read on to find out why you’ll love this gay-friendly Cycladic island that’s become an LGBTQ+ hotspot fit for the gods.

Behold Jackie O: the patron gay saint of Mykonos

Until the mid-century, Mykonos was a quiet place where locals made a modest living fishing. Then Jacquline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis – America’s former first lady aka Jackie O – paid the island a visit, and this iconic destination was born.

gay cruises to greece

Initially, there were laid back but adventurous bohemian crowds that came for the beaches. Then once the likes of Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren, and Brigitte Bardot joined Jackie, the rich and fabulous followed. And, to our benefit, the island began to cater to the gay and gay-friendly travellers amongst them. Today, Mykonos rivals European hotspots like Saint Tropez and Ibiza. And it’s all packed into a compact 33 mi 2 / 85.6 km 2 .

Mykonos, Greece

But back to that patron saint. If you want to pay tribute to Jackie, she is memorialized by a chain of gay establishments named in her honour: JackieO’. There’s the Bar in Mykonos Town for cocktails and drag shows, the Beach Club at Super Paradise Beach where you can rent private cabanas or dine at the restaurant, and their two latest ventures: the Cantina restaurant, and the Yacht Club – which is actually a disco club – that plays host to famous DJs. Both are located next to the original bar.

Cycladic Architecture

When people picture Greek islands, they conjure up visions of whitewashed homes with thick walls, curved arches, and azure blue accents nestled into steep craggy hills. This is the quintessential style of Cyclades, a group of about 220 islands that include Mykonos. That distinct pair of colours, however, is a relatively recent establishment. It was Greek PM Ioannis Metaxas who declared in 1936 that these two colours be used to represent the white foam of the Aegean Sea against a blue sky. Prior to that, homes were neither plastered nor whitewashed, which allowed them to blend into their surroundings (and served as a form of defence from pirate raids in medieval times).

Mykonos, Greece laneway

Along with the homes, windmills were another distinct part of Cycladic architecture. They were originally built by the Venetians in the 1600s, and remained in use until the mid-1900s. But 16 of them remain on the island and we’ll get to pay them a visit.

Old School Charm

Unlike some of the other epic island destinations we’ve mentioned, what sets Mykonos apart is how it’s managed to retain its rustic charm. Mykonos Town, colloquially known as Chora (which translates to town), feels more like an old village than a modern hotspot. Cars are limited, making it a pedestrian’s paradise. It’s still full of old Greek Orthodox Christian locals, but Yia-Yia Bessy won’t bat an eye if you and your honey-bunny saunter by holding hands and/or sucking face like it’s sweet baklava. They all recognize and appreciate that gay tourists helped make their island the affluent paradise it is today.

gay cruises to greece

If you’re craving something a bit more dynamic, consider Little Venice , which emerged in the 13th century. It’s romantic but lively, with many seaside bars and decadent discos.

Mykonos Greece little Venice

What good is an island holiday without a beach? Well, Mykonos has over 30 beaches. Some are massive with DJs spinning tunes. Some are discrete and modest. Some are nude. Some are gay. And some of the most salacious ones are nude *and* gay (insert evil grin).

Mykonos Greece Paradise Beach

Elia – the longest beach on the island – and Super Paradise are the two we’d recommend for a perfectly gay old time. Full disclosure: Super Paradise has recently become more mainstream (with the exception of JackieO’s), so most LGBTQ+ folks go to Elia, which is more affordable and, well… more gay.

Mykonos Greece Elia Beach

Excursions!

If you just want to park it on a beach lounger and let the day go by, do *not* let us stop you. But if you’re a culture vulture or history ho, join our 2-hour walking tour of the town. We’ll visit Paraportiani church, the castle ruins, Little Venice, the Alefkandra area, and stroll the narrow streets of Matoyiannia.

gay cruises to greece

If you’re interested in venturing off the island, join our excursion to UNESCO-listed Delos (birthplace of Greek God Apollo). This teeny isle, like the majority of the Cyclades, is uninhabited (and a quick ferry ride away). You’ll get to see Hellenistic houses, the Sanctuary (Apollo’s temple), and the guardians of the Sacred Lake: five marble lions from the 7th century BC. Finally, we’ll visit the Theatre and the Roman quarter, where Dionysus’ ancient statues await.

Touring the ancient ruins

Peak Season Pageantry

We’ll spend two leisurely days on Mykonos in early September. The weather will be reasonable but the crowds remain lively. If you were to book a hotel on the island, you could easily drop $1000/night for a modest room. Instead, we’ll drop anchor so you can relish everything about the island before retreating to our exclusive, exquisite yacht like Stefano Gabbana – of Dolce & Gabbana – who is known to visit and slumber aboard his own luxe vessel.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: june 16, 2024, piraeus (athens), greece.

Depart Athens at 06:00 PM Athens has amazing historic sites and a vibrant scene found in its bars, clubs, restaurants, and cafes. The city has a well developed gay scene, but you need to know where to look. Gazi is one of the more popular neighborhoods and you’ll find plenty of gay and gay-friendly venues in this area.

Day 2: June 17, 2024

Enjoy a day at sea by taking advantage of all the ship has to offer. Spend the day lounging poolside and soaking up the sun with your favorite cocktail in hand or sign up for group fitness classes including yoga, meditation, cycling, HIIT classes, and more. When it's time to eat, choose from 20+ eateries featuring menus curated by Michelin star chefs. Later in the evening, enjoy shows onboard which were developed by the world’s most-talked-about producers and artists. With a festival-like lineup featuring original, first-to-sea productions, extraordinary pop-up acts, and immersive experiences, the entertainment on board is something you’ve never seen before.

Day 3: June 18, 2024

Dubrovnik, croatia.

Arrive to Dubrovnik at 09:00 AM Across the Adriatic Sea from Italy, is Dubrovnik — the (unofficial) capital of Croatia’s dazzling Dalmatian Coast. The subtropical climate has made this former village-turned-fortified city an ideal port for merchants and seafarers since the 7th-century and an ideal backdrop for our Sailors (and Hollywood location scouts) since the 21st. Learn how to cook traditional Croatian dishes with locals, see the spots where some of the most famous scenes from Game of Thrones were shot, or visit one of Ponikve's many wine cellars to savor the Peljesac peninsula's red and white wines. Depart Dubrovnik at 10:00 PM

Day 4: June 19, 2024

Split, croatia.

Arrive to Split at 09:00 AM Along the eastern shore of the glistening Adriatic Sea lies a small peninsula that’s home to Croatia’s second largest city – Split. The first thing you’ll see when approaching this breathtaking Dalmatian capital coastal city is its pristine beaches, who’s white sand seemingly glows in the sun. Discover the majestic inland of Dalmatian Hinterland on an exciting half-day ATV tour, go on a picturesque self-guided tour through Krka National Park, or take a small wooden boat into the magical Blue Cave – a glowing cobalt oasis that you have to see to believe. Departure Split at 09:00 PM

Day 5: June 20, 2024

Kotor, montenegro.

Arrive to Kotor at 09:00 AM While Kotor’s history is steeped in medieval lore, its past extends all the way back to both ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. Like the age of a vintage Hollywood starlet, an exact date to the city’s origins is impossible to pinpoint, but with the 12th-14th centuries being widely accepted as the golden age of Montenegro’s development, this is probably a good starting place to fix your mind upon entering the city’s renowned gates. Sail over to one of Kotor's greatest highlights, Our Lady of the Rocks, the tiny islet said to be built around a rock where an image of the Madonna was found in 1452. For the adventurous, there's the option to drive an ATV through Montenegro's wooded valleys and remote areas of Lovcen National Park, while the wine lovers can visit the Šipčanik Wine Cellar. Departure Kotor at 07:00 PM

Day 6: June 21, 2024

Corfu, greece.

Arrive to Corfu at 09:00 AM Corfu is simply dripping in history. Wander through the narrow cobblestone alleys and discover a world of adventure worthy of a fantasy film. Stumble upon historical landmines — like The Old Town’s stunning municipal building, which served as its first (and former) grand theater and opera house built during the Venetian empire. Departure Corfu at 09:00 PM

Day 7: June 22, 2024

Day 8: june 23, 2024.

Arrive to Piraeus (Athens) at 6:30 AM This is the departure day after 7 awesome days together. Disembark from the ship by 11am and if your flight allows, make the most of your last hours in Athens by booking a scenic drive and tour of the Acropolis before heading to the airport.

Tour Highlights

  • Group tour with gay guests
  • Adults-only cruise of 2,700 guests
  • LGBT+ friendly cruise line
  • Visit Greece, Croatia & Montegnegro
  • Plenty of free time to explore
  • Relaxing at the beach
  • Delicious specialty restaurants
  • Unique entertainment & shows

We don't like to place an age limit on the trip. But in saying that it's best suitable for ages 18+ and that guests are healthy and can get into the spirit of the trip. Our average age range is usually between mid-'30s and mid-'60s but we've also had younger and older on past trips. Our trips are also active and include many walking tours so it may not be suitable if you if you can't spend several hours on your feet, walking around the city and up and down hills.

I'm a solo traveler. Can I come alone?

Absolutely! Although we are not able to match you with a roommate, Virgin Voyages offers private, solo traveler cabins with a modest single supplement. The majority of guests on our trips are solo travelers so you won't be alone!

I have more questions. How can I contact you?

If you have more questions, simply fill out this form with your information and questions and we'll get in touch with you.

Is this trip only for gay men?

The trip is open to any member or ally of the LGBT+ community. While the vast majority of our guests tend to be gay men, we're happy to welcome anyone who is friendly, welcoming and has an open mind.

Is Virgin Voyages a gay cruise?

No, Virgin Voyages is a mainstream, adults-only cruise line open to anyone that launched in 2021. It was started by the Virgin Group, which is founded by Sir Richard Branson. Virgin Voyages is one of the most LGBT+ friendly businesses in the travel industry and the Virgin Group has been a supporter of LGBT+ rights for over 50 years. Each Virgin Voyages ship can hold up to 2,700 guests. Our ship: Vasco da Gama

VDG_Hollydwoods-Theater_02-scaled

In 2019, Vasco da Gama , formerly Pacific Eden, returned to her home in Europe, where she was commissioned as Statendam by Holland-America Line in 1993.

She combines the Portuguese explorer tradition with the demands of today’s cruise guests: a wide range of different bars and restaurants in an exclusive setting, lots of public space with a modern interior, and tasteful design elements.

On board, you’ll find a full range of equipment for spa, fitness, and your personal leisure activities. You won’t find any other comparable cruise ship of this size on the market offering such good value for money. The personal atmosphere on board due to the manageable number of guests is key to the sense of well-being.

The Highlights

  • Privacy Policy

Greece is the birthplace of democracy, the Olympic Games, Western Philosophy and Western theories of tragedy and comedy.  It is also ancient, with the capital, Athens, one of the oldest and longest continuously inhabited cities in the world.

As such it has a rich cultural heritage, boasting the largest number of archaeological museums in the world, more than any other country. Greek cuisine is also testament to its rich history with influences dating back to the Ancient Greek Empire, the Romans, Byzantine and Ottomans.

Greece has more than 2,000 islands, of which around 170 are populated. The largest is Crete and the most popular are Santorini and Mykonos, particularly with LGBTQ+ travelers in the summer months (June-August). As such, there are an abundance of white sandy Mediterranean beaches to discover.

With regards to LGBTQ+ rights, Greece has not always been very LGBTQ+ friendly. Society is predominantly Greek Orthodox, which is known for being conservative and homophobic. Families have traditionally expected men to get educated, find a good job, marry and produce many children. Women are expected to stay home and look after the house and children. However, over the past few decades, attitudes have started to change as more LGBTQ+ issues are discussed in the media and the government has passed proactive LGBTQ+ laws such as anti-discrimination in employment and allowed LGBTQ+ people to serve in the military and the right to change gender.

Greece legalized same-sex marriage in February 2024, making it the first Christian Orthodox country to do so. They also extended parental rights to allow same-sex couples to adopt. In 2022, Greece banned conversion therapy for minors.

Athens and Mykonos are Greece’s top LGTBQ+ friendly destinations along with several other cities, however when venturing into small towns and villages, some locals may be homophobic so you should be cautious with public displays of affection.

Why Visit Greece & When to Go

Travelers to Greece often come to marvel at the rich archaeological history, particularly prominent in Athens, home to the Acropolis. The islands and beaches are another popular draw, particularly during the summer months.

Greece has four clear seasons: winter (December to February), spring (March to May), summer (June to August), and fall (September to November). The busiest time is July and August when hotels are usually sold out, prices are at their highest and beaches become packed with people. The ideal time to visit Greece is around these months, especially in June, September and October when it’s less packed, temperatures are comfortable and not too hot, and prices not as high.

During the off-season in winter, Greece offers skiing opportunities in the mountainous areas, with many ski resorts.

Interesting Cities to Visit in Greece

The capital city of Greece is one of the oldest cities in the world, having been inhabited for over 7,000 years. The most popular draw of Athens is the Acropolis, an ancient citadel dating back to the 5th century BC. It sits atop a hill right in the heart of the city, making it visible from most places in Athens.

At the foot of the Acropolis is the central district of Plaka, which is like a small village within the city, with narrow cobblestone streets, small boutique shops, buskers, sidewalk cafes and family-owned tavernas. Nearby is the Gazi neighborhood where the majority of the Athenian gay hangouts can be found, like Sodade2.

OIA IN SANTORINI

Santorini is the most visited of all the Greek islands and for good reason. It has been formed by volcanic activity leaving behind a very dramatic, picturesque landscape. One particular highlight is the town of Oia at the northern tip of the island, which has many of the whitewashed buildings so visually linked to the Greek isles and culminates in a cliff with a large drop. This is also a famous spot to admire the sun setting over the Aegean. It’s so popular that every evening, crowds gather to watch the sunset, then clap as it finishes.

MYKONOS TOWN IN MYKONOS

During the touristic months of June to September, Mykonos island comes alive with crowds, particularly in July and August. Mykonos Town is the main transport hub into the island and the place most will stay. It’s a pretty place, with houses painted white to reflect the strong sun, with the characteristic blue church domes. Mykonos Town is also the beating heart of the LGBTQ+ community, with gay bars like Jackie O’, Babylon, Porta, Kastro’s and Elysium.

LGBTQ+ travelers will also want to check out the XLSIOR gay festival that takes places in Mykonos Town in late August, sometimes early September.

CHANIA IN CRETE

Chania is the second largest city on Crete, but the island’s prettiest. The central point of Chania is the Old Port, which was built by the Venetians in the 1300s. It’s a romantic place to stroll, lined with many restaurants, cafes and hotels. There is a large 21m (69ft) high octagonal Egyptian lighthouse looking over Chania, which is great to visit for the best views. It is the oldest lighthouse in the world, built by the Venetians in the 1500s to protect the island. Further inland, in the Old City of Chania based around Stivanadika Street, you can find many folk art souvenirs, herbs, olive oil, jewels and leather products.

THESSALONIKI

Greece’s second city, in the north, is Thessaloniki. It is considered as Greece’s cultural capital, renowned for festivals and events taking place throughout the year.

The city is characterized by the 34m (112ft) high Lefkos Pirgos (meaning “white building”), which used to form part of the defensive walls of Thessaloniki. The beachfront promenade runs from this building and is one of the most popular meeting spots, with many excellent cafes to hang out. The city has a small LGBTQ+ scene with hangouts like eNola and Don’t Tell Mama.

HALKIDIKI/CHALKIDIKI

Halkidiki is the most popular tourist destination of Northern Greece—three peninsulas that stretch into the North Aegean Sea. Each peninsula has long sandy beaches but the first peninsula, Kassandra, is the most developed with thriving nightlife, resorts and busy beaches during the summer months. The second peninsula, Sithonia, is much quieter and relaxed with less crowded beaches.

The third peninsula, Athos, has been completely untouched by modern development. It is in a monastic state, closed off to the world, and only open to male visitors by prior application (see more below).

MONEMVASIA IN THE PELOPONNESE

Monemvasia is almost an island linked to the mainland in the Peloponnese region of Greece by a narrow causeway. It is comprised of two towns: the lower at sea level, which has been restored, and the upper, called citadel, which is still largely in ruins.

It’s a beautiful place to wander with stunning sunsets every evening, making it a popular spot for couples. One of the best times to visit is during the spring when the grass is green and the wild flowers are in bloom.

Experiencing Greek Food

Greek Mediterranean cuisine is also testament to the country’s long history, dating back to the Ancient Greeks who had a strong focus on olive oil, wheat, wine, and fish. The Byzantine era introduced new ingredients like meats, feta cheese, caviar, nutmeg, basil and lemons. The Ottoman Empire then contributed to the Greek cuisine, introducing staples like moussaka, tzatziki (yoghurt/cucumber/oil/mint dip), yuvarlakia (meatball/rice/lemon soup), keftethes (mince meatballs) and boureki (baked filled pastries).

Today, a traditional Greek meal will be at a taverna where you can order mezethes, many small plates of different specialties starting with olives, hummus, tahini, and tzatziki, and moving on to other starters like cheeses, keftethes, and dolmathes (stuffed vine leaves), before moving on to different meats or fish depending on which type of meze you pick.

The most popular wine in Greece is retsina, a white wine that has a distinct resin flavor. Greece also produces other fine wines, like Athiri, Malagousia and Moscofilero. Another popular alcoholic beverage to look out for is raki, a clear unsweetened, often anise-flavored and very strong drink, often drunk as a shot after a heavy meal. Be careful, it’s lethal!

LGBTQ+ History of Greece

From Zeus, the King of the gods, to Herakles, the greatest of heroes, to Sappho, the greatest lyric poet, Sophocles, the greatest tragedian, Socrates, the inventor of philosophy, and Alexander the Great:  most of the greatest figures in ancient Greek culture had LGBTQ+ relationships.  And these loves were not secret or devalued:  instead, same-sex love was considered the purest love, the basis for education, and (in contrast to modern attitudes) the root of military courage.  And almost every museum or archaeological site in Greece has something related to this LGBTQ+ culture.  For instance, in Delphi, one of the highlights of the museum is a cult statue of the god Antinous—the Roman Emperor Hadrian’s Greek lover, who was made into a god when he died; in Olympia, there is a statue of Zeus with his boyfriend Ganymede—and the mythical founder of the Olympic games, Pelops, was the boyfriend of Poseidon, god of the sea.  And of course, you can go to Lesbos to soak in the Sapphic atmosphere!  In short, Greece is not only a gorgeous country with an amazing history:  it is also a paradise of LGBTQ+ history and art!

Safety Considerations for LGBTQ+ visitors to Greece

While Greece may not be as LGBTQ+ friendly as other countries in North America or north/west Europe, it has evolved considerably over the past few decades, with a strong LGBTQ+ community gaining confidence and having a strong positive impact on society. For example, in 2015, civil unions for same-sex couples were allowed. Anti-discrimination laws in employment were introduced in 2005.

LGBTQ+ travelers are unlikely to experience any problems in the big cities. However, when traveling in a small town or village, attitudes are likely to still be very conservative.

A word of caution for all LGBTQ+ travelers, Greece is still strongly affected by the economic crisis, with planned strikes taking place, which may affect ferries, traffic and airport staff. It is worth checking before booking any travel plans and ensure you have adequate travel insurance.

LGBTQ+ Travel Tips for Greece

Athens Pride has taken place every year since 2005, becoming more and more popular each year, with celebrities, politicians and other public figures attending. Over the past five years, other big cities in Greece have started to host their own pride events, including Thessaloniki, Patras and Heraklion in Crete.

Athens has the largest LGBTQ+ community in Greece, particularly in the Gazi neighborhood, which has an array of gay bar and clubs like Sodade2. It also hosts an annual gay and lesbian film festival called Outview.

Mykonos island has one of the most famous LGBTQ+ scenes in the world and becomes a gay mecca during the summer months, which culminates with the XLSIOR Festival.

Thessaloniki has a small LGBTQ+ community with a handful of LGBTQ+ hangouts. In 2020, Thessaloniki will host the 27th EuroPride.

Stefan and Sebastien are a gay couple who met in London in 2009. They have since been traveling the world extensively together, particularly Europe, Asia and the Americas. Sebastien is from France and Stefan is British/Greek Cypriot. Stefan spent a lot of his childhood with family in Thessaloniki and Halkidiki, worked in Athens as a student and traveled around Greece both alone and with Sebastien. The boys write about their travels on their  Nomadic Boys gay travel blog.

Most chilling cruise ship deaths - hot tub drowning, thrown body, and tragic overdose

Cruise ship passengers head aboard for fun, frolics and relaxation but occasionally their luxury holidays can turn into nightmares. We take a look at some of the worst tragedies on the high seas

Amy and Brad pictured on the ship

  • 16:00, 25 Aug 2024

While the chances of dying aboard a cruise ship are extremely low, with 30 million people opting for a holiday at sea each year, accidents and incidents do happen.

The average number of deaths aboard major liners each year is said to be just 31. In May, an unnamed passenger reportedly jumped from the world's largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean's Icon Of The Seas , when it was heading from Miami to Honduras.

The man was rescued by the US Coast Guard but sadly passed away. In the same month, father-of-three Shane Dixon, 50, plunged to his death from the P&C cruise ship Pacific Adventure as it approached Sydney Harbour. His family said he had lost thousands of dollars in the onboard casino the night before.

From murder and manslaughter to tragic accidents, the Mirror takes a look at some of the most notorious deaths and vanishings on the high seas...

Gay's body was thrown out of a porthole by deck steward James Camb during a voyage on the Durban Castle to Southampton in 1947. Camb initially denied even seeing the actress on the cruise ship before claiming she had died from a medical episode while the couple were in bed.

The murderer, 30, had spotted the 21-year-old on the ship after it departed from South Africa, where Gay had been working for six months, before they 'became intimate'. He claimed she had begun 'frothing at the mouth' and he committed the 'beastly' act of throwing her body out of the porthole in a panic.

The killer wasn't believed - Camb was initially sentenced to hang but avoided capital punishment as a no-hanging bill was being discussed in parliament at the time. "The House of Commons has, by its vote, saved the life of the brutal lascivious murderer who thrust the poor girl he had raped and assaulted through a porthole of the ship to the sharks," said Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

Released in 1959, Gay's killer was later convicted of further sexual offences and 20 years later, he died behind bars. The actress's body was never found.

Amy Lynn Bradley

Amy, from Virginia, was on the balcony of her family cabin aboard the Rhapsody Of The Seas in the early hours of March 24, 1998. But when her father Ron checked on his daughter at 6am, she was nowhere to be seen.

Amy's shoes were still on the balcony but her lighter and cigarettes had vanished with her. Ron searched the ship and when he couldn't find his daughter, he woke up his wife Iva and their son Brad.

The family begged the crew to make an announcement and not let anybody off the ship at the port of Curacao until Amy had been found, in case of abduction. The announcement her family had begged for was made at 7.50 am, by which point the majority of Royal Caribbean passengers had disembarked and crew searched common areas but not passenger and staff rooms.

What happens to Amy remains a mystery today - did she go overboard? Mum Iva claimed Amy had received a lot of attention from crew members on the ship and her family pointed out that she was a strong swimmer and trained lifeguard. Amy was declared dead after 12 years but many people have come forward to claim sightings of her since then.

Rebecca Coriam

The 24-year-old was working on the Disney Wonder cruise ship when she disappeared on May 22, 2011. The vessel was sailing off the coast of Mexico when the youth activity worker from Chester was spotted on surveillance video talking on one of the ship's internal phones.

Rebecca appeared very upset and was asked if she was ok by a fellow employee in the crew lounge, appearing to say yes before hanging up the phone and walking away. What happened next remains a mystery but a common theory is she was swept overboard by a rogue wave while at the crew pool.

Others alleged foul play and blamed the crew member's upset on a turbulent relationship. Rebecca's family made an out of court settlement with the entertainment giant in 2016.

Dianne Brimble

Dianne left Sydney, Australia on P&O's Pacific Sky on September 23, 2002 with her daughter Tahlia, sister Alma Wood and niece Kari Ann. Later that evening, she headed to the ship's nightclub and her daughter woke up the following morning with her mother nowhere to be seen.

Alma was later called to the ship's medical centre where she was told her sister had died. Dianne's naked body had been found on the floor of a cabin occupied by four unknown men. It transpired the group of men had put a date rape drug in the 42-year-old's drink in the club.

The mother-of-three had died from a combination of alcohol and an overdose of GHB - three times the amount a recreational user would have consumed. Alma, Kari Ann and Tahlia were forced to endure two more days on the ship before they could disembark and fly home to Australia.

The cabin belonged to a group of four men who were part of a larger group of eight and would soon become infamously known as 'The Adelaide Eight.' Three of the men would later be convicted of crimes associated with Dianne's death, which caused a public outcry for tighter security measures to be put in place on cruise ships to protect future potential victims.

Birdie Africa

Also known as Michael Moses Ward, Birdie had been the only child to survive the 1985 M.O.V.E. bombing. The tragedy, which killed 11 people including his mother, was the result of a firefight between Philadelphia Police and members of the Black liberation group.

Sadly, in 2013 Birdie, 41, perished aboard the Carnival Dream, which was sailing the Caribbean. He had been drinking heavily when he slid under the water in the ship's hot tub and drowned while a crowd looked on. A police report said: "Two passengers saw the body but didn't react initially, thinking it was a 'painting' and called their friends over to take a look.

"A doctor who refused to be identified also stated that he saw passengers and crew looking on and had to tell them to pull the body out." The same doctor alleged a nurse who obtained a defibrillator was hesitant about using it, allegedly unsure if it was safe to use on a wet body.

Karen Waltz

The newly wed was on the last day of her honeymoon cruise to Mexico in February 1988 when her husband Scott Roston claimed she had been swept overboard by a hard gust of wind. The chiropractor said they had been jogging around the ship's running track when tragedy struck close to San Diego but his story didn't add up.

There were no wind gusts at the time Karen went overboard Sundancer Cruises' Stardancer ship and an investigation found the doctor had been angry with his wife at dinner for eating sweets and not knowing which utensil to use. Roston, 36, soon changed his story to claim Israeli assassins had in fact slain his wife.

This tale was given short shrift and the callous honeymoon killer was sentenced to life in prison, later reduced to 33 years.

In August 2004, Merrian embarked on a solo holiday to Alaska with Celebrity Cruises. But just two days in to the week long holiday, her steward Domingo Monteiro noticed that her bed hadn't been slept in although all of her belongings were still in her room.

The concerned member of staff reported the investment banker missing to his boss daily but was allegedly told 'Just do your job and forget it' - this manager was later fired. When the cruise ended and crew members realised Merrian's belongings were still onboard, they packed them up and donated to charity.

Royal Caribbean officials had failed to secure the Massachusetts businesswoman's room, collect evidence, search the boat or even contact authorities or notify her family. Her father reported Merrian, 40, missing when they realised she had disappeared weeks later but she has never been found.

Paul Rossington and Kristen Schroder

Newly engaged Paul and Kristen died on the Carnival Spirit cruise ship in May 2013. They had been seen arguing at dinner and were caught on security cameras quarrelling in the ship's casino shortly before they took their argument to their cabin.

Security cameras showed estate agent Kristen, 27, climb over the fifth floor balcony railing of her cabin and cling to the outside of it before slipping. She struck level three of the ship and a lifeboat before tumbling into the ocean.

Paramedic Paul, 30, who was naked at the time was seen diving into the Tasman Sea, off the coast of New South Wales in Australia, in a desperate attempt to save his fiancée. The couple were never found.

Chloe Wiegand

Chloe, from Indiana, was just 18-months-old when she fell from her grandfather's arms and through an open window on Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas in June 2019. The vessel was docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico and she was sent plummeting 11 stories, 150 feet to the pier below.

The toddler was in a children's play area of the ship when Salvatore Anello held her up, saying he wanted her to bang on the glass as she enjoyed while watching her big brother's hockey games. He later pleaded guilty to negligent homicide and was sentenced to three years of probation.
