Shared with You

“Shared with You” automatically shows up all the links shared in the Apple Messages app. Additionally, it also stores the shared links that you pin. Hence, if you ever want to check the web links shared via the stock message app on Apple devices, you no longer have to dig into conversation threads.

Apple releases Safari 15.1 beta for macOS Big Sur and Catalina users

Avatar for Filipe Espósito

Following the release of the new Safari 15 for users running macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina last month, Apple this week released the first Safari 15.1 beta for macOS versions prior to Monterey.

Apple first introduced Safari 15 as part of macOS Monterey at WWDC 2021. The update introduced a new browsing experience that unifies the address bar with the tab bar. However, as macOS Monterey will not be released to the public until later this year, the company has decided to make Safari 15 available to macOS Big Sur and Catalina users .

It’s unclear what exactly is new in the Safari 15.1 beta, as the release notes are basically the same as Safari 15.0. Most likely, Apple is working on bug fixes and other improvements that have already been added to Safari in the latest macOS Monterey beta .

It’s worth noting that some Safari 15 features like the built-in translator still require macOS Monterey, so you won’t be able to use them with macOS Big Sur or macOS Catalina.

The Safari 15.1 beta can be downloaded through the Apple Developer website , and Apple has also been inviting some users to try out the new version through the AppleSeed program. Keep in mind that installing Safari 15.1 beta will replace the main version of Safari on your Mac, so this may not be a good idea if you use Safari as your primary web browser.

What you need to know

  • Apple has released Safari 15.1 for users of macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina..
  • The update brings back the old Safari tab design.
  • Mac users on macOS Monterey 12.0.1 already have the latest version of the browser.

Apple has officially released Safari 15.1 to Mac users running macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina.

The latest update, which brings some usual bug fixes and performance improvements to the browser, also brings back a much-requested feature that was missing with Safari 15: old-school browser tabs!

When Apple originally released Safari 15 to macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina users, everyone was both cautious and optimistic about its new tab redesign. Over the course of the developer and public beta periods, the company listened to a lot of customer feedback and implemented some notable changes to make the experience better.

While the general consensus agreed that the new Compact design could be beneficial to some users, many users complained that the old tab design was more user-friendly. Users were not happy that Apple took the option away to use a more traditional version of tabs in the latest version of Safari.

Thankfully, with Safari 15.1, Apple has brought back its traditional tab design for those who want to use it. Now, users can change between the Compact design and the Separate tab design when using tabs in the latest version of Safari.

If you've been wanting the old tab design as an option but are still running Safari 15 on macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina, now is the time to update! Users running macOS Monterey 12.0.1 already have the Separate tab design as an option.

Troubleshooting, safari 15.6.1 for macos big sur and macos catalina released.

Safari for Mac

Apple has released Safari 15.6.1 with an important security fix for Macs running macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina.

The Safari update includes the same security fixes that are available in macOS Monterey 12.5.1 update for Mac users running Monterey, and iOS 15.6.1 and iPadOS 15.6.1 for iPhone and iPad. The latest macOS Ventura beta also apparently includes the same security fix.

The security update is recommended for all Mac users running macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina.

How to Get Safari 15.6.1 on MacOS Big Sur & Catalina

  • Quit out of Safari
  • From the  Apple menu go to “System Preferences”
  • Choose “Software Update”
  • Choose to download and install Safari 15.6.1

Safari 15.6.1 is only available for MacOS Big Sur and MacOS Catalina. Mac users running MacOS Monterey will find macOS 12.5.1 available to download instead.

Mac users running earlier versions of MacOS system software won’t have a Safari update available, but can instead find protection by using a different web browser entirely, whether it’s Chrome, or Brave.

A description of the flaw on the Apple website is as follows https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213414:

Safari 15.6.1 Released August 18, 2022 WebKit Available for: macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina Impact: Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited. Description: An out-of-bounds write issue was addressed with improved bounds checking. WebKit Bugzilla: 243557 CVE-2022-32893: an anonymous researcher

macOS Safari Full Installer Database. Download Directly from Apple!

Download macOS Safari Full Installers

This database will contain download links for macOS Safari full Installer pkg files (Safari16.0MontereyAuto.pkg example). This file is the same full installer that you would download directly from software update for Intel and Apple Silicon M1 Mac Computers. The “SafarixxxxAuto.pkg” is stored on Apple’s servers and is a standalone installer package. Once downloaded, all you need to do is install the pkg and Safari will be updated. You can use this pkg to reinstall Safari if you are having issues. Make sure that you download the correct version of Safari for your OS. For macOS Ventura, Safari is included in all updates.

NOTE #1 : I strongly recommend using the Software Update pane or softwareupdate binary to update Safari. Use the stand alone pkg as a last resort before reinstalling macOS.

NOTE #2: You can not use a previous Safari stand alone package to downgrade to a previous version of Safari.

NOTE#3: Apple usually only keeps 2 versions of Safari in the software update catalog. The current version and one behind. When a new version is released, the 3rd download link is removed.

Safari with Apple's Private Browsing

download safari for mac big sur

Timed to join the update to macOS Sonoma , the introduction of Safari 17 updates Apple's macOS web browser adds some much-needed features to the surfing tool.

The release notes mention support for Profiles , allowing browsing to be separated for topics and tasks like "Work" and "Personal." Profiles have their own history, cookies, extensions, Tab Groups, and favorites lists.

A new enhanced Private Browsing locks the windows when they're not used, stops known trackers from loading, and can remove identifying tracking elements from URLs.

Search has also been streamlined to make it faster, offer more relevant results, and to make it easier to read.

Multiple tab selections allow users to select multiple tabs at once, so they can be moved around the tab bar or created into a Tab Group.

The update is available through System Settings in macOS Ventura or System Preferences in macOS Monterey , under General then Software Update. The download weighs in at 165.7MB.

macOS Big Sur

macOS Big Sur elevates the most advanced desktop operating system in the world to a new level of power and beauty. Experience Mac to the fullest with a refined new design. Enjoy the biggest Safari update ever. Discover new features for Maps and Messages. And get even more transparency around your privacy.

Update now See a preview of what’s coming in macOS Monterey

Bold new experience. Same Mac magic.

Unparalleled power. Legendary ease of use. Limitless creativity. macOS Big Sur brings a refined new design that gives you even more of the things you love about Mac.

Watch the film

Streamlined apps

From full-height sidebars to refreshed toolbars, a clean new app design makes sure your content is always front and center.

Refreshed Dock

A sleek design update makes getting to your favorite apps even easier. And a new uniform shape for app icons adds consistency while letting the personality of Mac shine through.

Control Center for Mac

Instantly access the controls you use most — like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth — and new controls to play music and enable Dark Mode for your display. Designed just for Mac, the new Control Center lets you add controls and drag favorites to the menu bar to customize it just for you.

Notification Center

A new design combines notifications and widgets in a single view for more information at a glance. Notifications are now grouped by app, and many are interactive — letting you do things like play new podcast episodes or learn more about Calendar invitations. And redesigned widgets come in three different sizes, so you can create the best view for you.

The all-new Safari. It’s love at first site.

Whether you’re streaming, searching, or just browsing, Safari is the best way to surf the web on all your Apple devices. And its biggest update ever brings intuitive customization options, improves on industry-leading performance and battery life, and introduces powerful new features designed to protect your privacy.

Customizable start page

Set a custom background image to start every browsing session with a view that’s all your own. And decide what appears on your start page — such as your Reading List, Favorites, iCloud Tabs, Siri Suggestions, and even a new Privacy Report

Safari extensions in the App Store

A new dedicated category in the App Store makes it easy to discover extensions from your favorite developers. New support for the WebExtensions API and migration tools allows developers to bring extensions from other browsers to Safari. And unlike other browsers, Safari asks you which websites each extension can access — keeping your browsing habits even more private.

Improved tab design

Tab lovers rejoice: An elegant new look means more tabs are visible at once. You can hover over any tab to bring up an instant page preview. And when you have several tabs open, Safari makes it easy to find the one you’re looking for with a new space-efficient design.

Beta Translation

Translate entire web pages between seven languages with a single click. 1

Password monitoring

Safari lets you know of any saved passwords that have been compromised in a data breach — and helps you upgrade them.

Safari automatically keeps an eye out for any saved passwords that may have been involved in a data breach. Using advanced cryptographic techniques, Safari periodically checks a derivation of your passwords against an updated list of compromised credentials. If a breach is discovered, Safari helps you upgrade your existing passwords. All this is done without revealing your password information to anyone — including Apple.

Privacy Report

Safari uses Intelligent Tracking Prevention to identify trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Click the Privacy Report button in your Safari toolbar for an instant snapshot of the cross-site trackers Safari is actively preventing from profiling you on that web page. And a new weekly Privacy Report on your start page shows how Safari protects your browsing across all the websites you visit.

The Privacy Report makes it easy to understand how the websites you visit treat your privacy. See the total number of trackers that have tried to profile you, the percentage of websites containing trackers, and the most common tracker. There’s even a list of top trackers, and another list of the websites that use them.

Increased performance

We made the fastest desktop browser on the planet even faster.

Improved power efficiency

Safari lets you do more online on a single charge than any other browser.

Up to 1.5 hours more streaming videos compared with Chrome and Firefox 3

Up to 1 hour more browsing compared with Chrome and Firefox 3

Messages on Mac. The ultimate conversation starter.

Keep track of groups. Express yourself instantly. Drill down into the details. The updated Messages app for Mac gives you all the tools you need to stay in control of the conversation.

Pin conversations

Pin any conversation to keep it at the top of your conversation list. Tapbacks, typing indicators, and recent messages animate above pins. And for quick access to your important conversations, your pins sync across your iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Inline replies

Reply directly to specific messages in any conversation. Messages automatically starts a new thread under the original reply, so if someone asks a question in a group conversation, it’s easy to keep track of all the replies.

Group photos

Every group is different. Make yours stand out at a glance by setting an image with a photo, Memoji, or emoji.

Type a name to direct a message to someone. When you are mentioned, your name is highlighted. You can even customize an active group so you only receive notifications when you are mentioned.

Discover trending images and GIFs — and instantly add them to any message.

Go ahead — express yourselves. Now you can create and edit Memoji right on your Mac, and instantly share them in messages with Memoji stickers.

Message effects

Because sometimes, words just aren’t enough.

Message effects come to Mac. Choose from effects that take up the entire screen — like balloons, confetti, or lasers — or effects that change how individual message bubbles animate. You can even send a message with invisible ink that stays blurred until you swipe over it with your cursor.

Find it, whatever it is, faster. Search now organizes your results into links and photos and highlights matching terms.

Redesigned Maps. Better ways to find your way.

Updated to make the most of your big display, Maps on Mac makes trip planning fast and easy. Powerful new features let you easily research destinations in advance. And new ways to navigate take the guesswork out of getting there.

Discover new places to eat, shop, and explore with curated Guides from brands you love. Create Guides for your own favorite places and share them with friends and family. 4

Privacy information on the App Store. More transparency in every download.

New privacy information on the App Store lets you see a summary of the privacy practices of each app before you decide to download it — just like nutrition labels help you understand what’s in food before you buy it. Developers self-report how they use your data, including what data they collect and whether that data is used to track you across other apps and websites.

And even more.

Editing in photos.

Create standout photos with expanded editing capabilities, including an improved Retouch tool powered by machine learning. 5

AirPods automatic device switching

AirPods automatically switch between your active devices paired to the same iCloud account — making it even easier to use them with your Apple devices. 6

HomeKit Secure Video notifications

Cameras that support HomeKit Secure Video can now take advantage of Face Recognition and Activity Zones, allowing you to tailor notifications to specific people or specific areas in your camera’s view. 7

Listen Now is the new home for Apple Music, 8 featuring new releases, artist interviews, and playlists personalized for you — all in one place.

Faster updates

Once macOS Big Sur is installed, software updates begin in the background and finish faster than before — so it’s easier than ever to keep your Mac up to date and secure.

I hope Apple makes Safari usable in macOS 15

A pple's Safari is no longer my primary browser after macOS Sonoma had such a negative impact on its performance, but I hope macOS 15 brings me back. To be honest, the issues started almost four years ago with the macOS Big Sur beta .

At the time, people complained about Safari's redesign, which I loved. Still, the issue was the app would continually display  duplicated tabs  even after a stable version was available. Once I clicked on a tab, the duplicated one would become a blank page.

While this problem was eventually fixed, it took Apple far too long to address the Safari issue on macOS Big Sur. In addition, it was with this operating system update that the  pop-up warnings  that a page was draining my MacBook's battery became more frequent.

This could have been solved if Apple was blocking all those ads and trackers it promised to. Not only was that not happening, but the pop-ups made pages load more slowly as well.

Around the time that macOS Ventura rolled out, I switched from a 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro to the 2021 M1 Pro MacBook Pro, but even Apple's silicon optimization wasn't enough. A few Safari tabs opened, and everything slowed down. With that, I decided to switch to Microsoft Edge .

In macOS Sonoma, I tried using Safari a few times to editing articles or browse the web, but I'd constantly get a pop-up saying that a page was consuming too much memory.

At the end of the day, I was utterly convinced that even a 2023 Mac Studio with an M2 Max and 32GB of RAM couldn't handle Safari.

I don't care about AI, but I hope macOS 15 makes Safari better

macOS 15 is expected to feature some AI improvements, but I really want a better Safari, and memory consumption isn't the only issue. Another common complaint is that Safari can't save passwords properly, especially when Apple suggests a strong password for a new credential. Even saving your credit card with Safari on macOS is a pain.

Meanwhile, I have never had any issues with Microsoft Edge. Everything works smoothly; it saves and remembers all my passwords. Still, since I'm reluctant to use Edge on iOS and iPadOS, I don't have the seamless experience I once had.

If Apple can't fix Safari, I think I might fully switch to Edge in iOS 18 and macOS 15. I can't wait for WWDC 2024 to see if Apple has heard our concerns.

Transfer from PC to Mac with Migration Assistant

Migration Assistant transfers (copies) your contacts, calendars, email accounts, and more from your Windows PC to the appropriate places on your Mac.

Set up your Mac and PC

Use migration assistant to connect your computers, use migration assistant to transfer your information, what is transferred, and where, if the transfer isn't successful.

On both computers:

Install the latest operating system updates: On your Mac install the latest macOS updates , and on your PC install the latest Windows updates.

If you installed antivirus software, firewall software, or VPN software, turn off that software until you've finished transferring your information.

Make sure that Wi-Fi is turned on.

If your Mac is using macOS Sonoma or later, this should be enough to allow Migration Assistant to connect and transfer information. If not, use Wi-Fi or Ethernet to connect your Mac and PC to the same network. Or connect them directly to each other using an Ethernet cable.

If your older PC doesn't support Bluetooth Low Energy, Migration Assistant might say that a Bluetooth Low Energy adapter is required to continue. Bluetooth adapters that connect to your PC's USB port are widely available.

Find out which macOS your Mac is using , then follow the appropriate steps.

If your Mac is using macOS Sonoma 14.4 or later

On your PC, download and install Windows Migration Assistant 3 . To use this version, your Mac must be using macOS Sonoma 14.4 or later. If it isn't, follow the steps for macOS Sonoma 14.3.1 or earlier , which requires an earlier version of Windows Migration Assistant.

On your Mac, open Migration Assistant from the Utilities folder of your Applications folder. To open the Utilities folder directly, you can choose Go > Utilities from the menu bar in the Finder. Or use Spotlight to search for Migration Assistant.

Follow the onscreen instructions until you're asked how you want to transfer your information. Select "From a Windows PC," then click Continue:

Migration Assistant on Mac: Transfer "From a Windows PC"

When your Mac shows a code and asks you to enter that code on your PC, open Windows Migration Assistant on your PC.

On your PC, follow the onscreen instructions until you're asked to enter the code displayed on your Mac. Enter that code and click Continue:

Migration Assistant on PC: Enter Code

Migration Assistant then begins trying to connect to your Mac:

Migration Assistant on PC: Looking for Mac...

After Migration Assistant makes the connection, follow the steps below to transfer your information .

If your Mac is using macOS Sonoma 14.3.1 or earlier

On your PC, download and install the appropriate Windows Migration Assistant:

Windows Migration Assistant 2.4.5.0 if your Mac is using a version of macOS Sonoma no later than 14.3.1, or is using macOS Ventura or macOS Monterey

Windows Migration Assistant 2.3.1.0 if your Mac is using macOS Big Sur

Windows Migration Assistant 2.2.0.1 if your Mac is using macOS Catalina or macOS Mojave

Windows Migration Assistant 2.1.2.0 if your Mac is using macOS High Sierra or macOS Sierra

Windows Migration Assistant 1.0.5.7 if your Mac is using OS X El Capitan or earlier

On your PC, open Windows Migration Assistant, then follow the onscreen instructions until Migration Assistant begins trying to connect to your Mac:

Migration Assistant on PC: Looking for Mac...

Select the icon representing your PC, then click Continue:

Migration Assistant on Mac: Select a Windows PC

Make sure that your PC and Mac show the same passcode, then click Continue on your PC:

Migration Assistant on PC: Verify Passcode

After connecting your computers , Migration Assistant catalogs the information on your PC and calculates how much storage space is used by each category of files. This can take a few minutes. When ready, select the information to transfer. You might need to scroll down to see the complete list.

Migration Assistant on Mac: Select information to transfer

Click Continue to begin the transfer. Large transfers might need hours to complete, and might seem to pause occasionally. You might want to start in the evening and allow migration to complete overnight.

When the transfer is complete, quit Migration Assistant on both computers, then log in to the migrated account on your Mac to see its files. The account uses the same name as the account on your PC.

Authorize your Mac for Apple ID purchases . It’s important to do this before you sync or play content downloaded from Apple.

If you need to transfer information from another Windows user account, log in to that account on your PC, then repeat the steps in this article.

Transferred to the Mail app: Email and email settings from Outlook and Windows Mail.

Transferred to the Contacts app: Contacts from People (Windows 10 or later), Outlook, and the Contacts folder in your home directory.

Transferred to the Calendar app: Appointments from Calendar (Windows 10 or later) and Outlook.

Transferred to the Reminders app: Tasks from Outlook. Requires migrating to a Mac with macOS Ventura or later.

Transferred to the Music app, Podcasts app, Books app, and TV app, respectively: Music, podcasts, audiobooks, and movies/TV shows.

Transferred to Safari: Homepage and bookmarks from Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari.

Transferred to System Settings or System Preferences: Custom desktop pictures, language settings, and location settings. If the Mac is using macOS Ventura or later, known Wi-Fi networks are also moved.

Transferred to your home folder : Documents and other files from your home directory. And photos, which you can add to the Photos app manually, or let Photos search your Mac for photos to import.

Transferred to the Shared folder of your home folder: Non-system files and documents from the system disk (typically the C drive) and other available disks. Requires using Migration Assistant while logged in to your PC as an administrator.

Make sure that you've installed the latest macOS updates on your Mac and the latest Windows updates on your PC. Then make sure that you're using the correct version of Windows Migration Assistant on your PC.

If you installed antivirus software, firewall software, or VPN software on either computer, turn off that software before using Migration Assistant.

Use the check disk (chkdsk) utility on your PC to check for issues that might prevent successful transfer of your information:

Right-click the Start button, then click Run.

Type cmd and press Enter. Command Prompt opens.

At the prompt, type chkdsk and press Enter.

If the utility finds problems, type chkdsk drive: /F , where drive is the letter representing your Windows startup disk, such as C.

Press Enter.

At the prompt, type Y , then restart your PC.

Repeat this process until the check disk utility reports no issues. If the utility can't fix every issue that it found, you might need to have your PC serviced.

If you can't resolve the issue, use an external storage device or file sharing to copy important files from your PC to your Mac.

You can also transfer information from another Mac , from a Time Machine backup of a Mac, or from an iPhone .
