Balmoral & Royal Deeside Tour

© Grampian Escapes & Tours

Ballater, Northeast of Scotland

Experience the beauty of the Royal Deeside with it's connections to the Monarchy. Starting from Aberdeen we follow the River Dee to Balmoral*. Walk in the footsteps of generations of Royals who have called this castle home.

Departs: Tue, Wed, Thu & Fri at 09:00 (Bookings must be made in advance)

From: The Wallace Monument in front of His Majesty's Theatre on Rosemount Viaduct.

Duration: 7.5 hours

Stop 1: Balmoral Castle

Deeside is most famous for Balmoral Castle and the long history with the Royal family who have loved this area for generations. There are stunning views of the hills and mountains as well as fields of heather with the scenic river Dee flowing through it.

Balmoral Castle & Estate was the late Queen Elizabeth's private country retreat in Scotland and a beloved home since Queen Victoria & Prince Albert purchased the castle in 1853. King Charles III, has his own private home on the estate and as his predecessors, has a great affection for the castle and grounds.

When visiting the estate, we highly recommend the audio tour! With the audio tour you will hear stories from people who lived and worked at Balmoral as they guide you around the estate. The tour brings to life such characters as Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and the Tsar of Russia but also, to a lesser extent staff from the Estate and Royal Household.

The Ballroom is currently the only room that is open to visitors within the Castle as the other areas are private. The objects in the Ballroom are all brought from within the Castle for display, these are all objects that belong to the Royal Family and normally live on a wall or shelf or cupboard in one of the private rooms.

***Balmoral Castle & Estate will close at the end of 11th of August 2024. This tour stop will be changed to Crathes Castle as of the 12st of August 2024.

Stop 2: Caigngorm National Park

Scotland is iconic for its beautiful rugged mountains, hills of heather and cool clear rivers running through the countryside. On this short scenic drive we detour through the fringes of the highland moors and heath lands of the east Cairngorm National Park. Stopping briefly to take in the countryside scene at Gairnshields bridge and the river Gairn. This historic single-arched rubble-built bridge, dates from 1751, originally formed part of the network of military roads in this region. The surrounding hills which are part of the Cairngorm National Park, form the largest National Park in the UK and stretch for 4,528 square kilometers!

Stop 3: Ballater

Ballater is is a picturesque Victorian village in the heart of Royal Deeside. This planned agricultural town dates back over two hundred years and is set around a central village green and the impressive Glenmuick Kirk which held its first service in December 1800. A stroll around the town reveals an interesting range of many specialty shops and good selection of restaurants and cafes to enjoy some of the local food & drink. Notice the number of shops which display the Royal Warrants, a sure sign of quality and support of the Royal family who support them as you wander through the village.

Stop 4: Cambus O'May Bridge

The Cambus O' May bridge spans the river Dee and was paid for by the estate of Alexander Gordon, who had grown up nearby. The bridge was built in 1905 and is a suspension footbridge 50 m long and 1.2 m wide. The Deeside Way, a trail following the former Deeside Railway, passes the north-eastern end of the bridge. Footpaths from the bridge lead to Torphantrick Wood and the Muir of Dinnet nature reserve and were popular spots for city visitors to step off the train and explore the countryside. The area still is very busy with woodland walks and wild swimming in the river.

Stop 5: Tomnavarie Stone Circle

Tomnaverie is a recumbent stone circle, a kind of monument found only in north-eastern Scotland. Their characteristic feature is a large stone on its side, flanked by two upright stones, usually on the south or south-west arc of the circle. The stone circle surrounds a burial cairn dating to about 4,500 years ago. The site appears to have seen use as late as the AD 1600s. It’s situated in a landscape littered with remains of stone circles and burial cairns.

Stop 6: Migvie Kirk

Migvie Kirk is a deconsecrated church on the Tillypronie Estate. In the centre of the kirk is group of stone chairs, carved with biblical texts, Pictish symbols and Ogham scripts. On the north wall is a huge oblique cross set into the plasterwork, and there are three stained glass windows, that illustrate the integration of Christianity into the Pictish practices. The combination of Pictish symbols and Christian ones illustrates a time when the two cultural traditions were melding together.

Stop 7: Queen's View

Just outside the village of Tarland is the Queen's View. 'The Queens View' gained its name from Queen Victoria who quickly fell in love with the view of the lower valley of the Dee which includes a view of the peak of Lochnagar. The view is particularly loved by the royals who find it an unspoiled beauty which has not altered greatly for hundreds of years making it even more remarkable and memorable, and a view which epitomises Aberdeenshire.

Why Choose Us

Balmoral castle and royal deeside tour – north east 250 – itinerary.

The Balmoral Castle and Royal Deeside Tour from Inverness only visits Balmoral during its opening period; April to July. From August to October we swap in the amazing Corgarff Castle instead. This tour opens with a drive south through Ferness and Grantown. Balmoral Castle (or Corgarff Castle) is our first stop and then along Royal Deeside to the attractive town of Braemar. We can enjoy free time here, for a wander and for lunch. A visit to Crathie Kirk is next, and your last visit of the day is your choice; Royal Lochnagar Distillery or the Whisky Castle in Tomintoul. We can stop to take photos at Carrbridge during our return.

Corgarff Castle

Built in the 1500’s, Corgarff served first as a laird’s tower house, and then in the 1700’s it became a British army (or redcoat) barracks. The castle is particularly impressive as a result of its commanding position high on a hill in the Cairngorm National Park. It is particularly scenic in August because all of the heather on the surrounding hills turns purple. The open sweeping vistas here are a perfect counter to the well wooded lands of Royal Deeside ahead.

Balmoral Castle

The Royal Family use Balmoral Castle as their Scottish summer residence. The old castle proved too small so Queen Victoria and Prince Albert built the current castle in 1856. We can visit Balmoral between April and July, after which it closes, as a result of the Queen’s arrival, in August. A visit to Balmoral gives access to the gift shop and cafe; the beautiful and extensive grounds and the ballroom.

Braemar is an attractive and thriving community in upper Deeside. Our guests enjoy free time for a wander; a lunch and time for photos of the Clunie Water, cascading through the heart of the village.. There are lots of independent and boutique shops, and a good range of eating places. As a result of the Queen’s regular attendance, the Braemar Gathering (on the first Saturday in September) has become one of the most famous highland games in the world.

Crathie Kirk

Crathie has been a place of worship since the 9th century. Once Victoria and Albert bought Balmoral they worshiped here whenever in residence. So it was Victoria who laid the foundation stone of this new, larger and more beautiful church in 1893. Completed in 1895, Crathie is a triumph of Gothic revival style and is built of local granite with a Scots Pine roof.

Royal Lochnagar Distillery

Lochnagar is the name of a nearby mountain. Indeed, in a poem by Lord Byron, he calls it dark Lochnagar. the mountain gives the distillery its name. Queen Victoria visited Lochnagar distillery in 1848, and is so impressed that she gives it the Royal Warrant. As a result it is one of only two distilleries allowed to use the word “Royal” in its name. The current distillery buildings date from 1906, and offer regular tours for visitors.

Whisky Castle, Tomintoul

The Whisky Castle is a great stop on the homeward journey to Inverness. Quite apart from being a well located comfort stop it also has a well-stocked gift shop and a coffee shop. The other end of the operation is one of the best stocked whisky shops we have seen. If you are interested in discussing whisky then this is a great place because they will give you a tasting, while you do so.

Carrbridge is a lovely old village on the River Dulnain, a name which means “Storm Stream”. We can still see that this river is prone to autumn and winter floods. This used to result in frequent delays to burials at the Church of Duthil. So the locals built a bridge in 1717 to solve that problem, and the spectacular remains of that bridge still stand today. That means it is the oldest stone bridge still standing in the Highlands at this time.

Balmoral Castle

Balmoral Castle is a large highland country house that is the centrepiece of the 50,000 acre Balmoral Estate. It has been one of the private residences of the British royal family since 1852 when, without having visited the site, Prince Albert purchased a previous 14th century castle and surrounding grounds as a gift for his wife Queen Victoria.

An initial plan to modify and extend the previous castle was deemed too complicated and the current mansion was commissioned in 1855. Local architects John and William Smith were tasked with designing the new home and landscape gardener James Beattie and painter James Giles were commissioned to the project. Construction was complete in 1856 and the old castle was demolished.

Balmoral is a statement of Queen Victoria’s love for Scotland. After visiting the site in 1848 she instantly felt at peace in the Dee valley where the castle stands. She spent a lot of time at Balmoral and after the death of Prince Albert she became almost reclusive at Balmoral when she famously befriended her Gillie, John Brown.

Unlike many royal castles and palaces, Balmoral is one of a collection of private residences that are owned by the monarch and not the crown estate. When Queen Victoria died in 1901 Balmoral passed to King Edward VII, and from him to each of his successors to the current monarch. However in a break with tradition Edward VIII retained the property after he abdicated the throne to marry Wallis Simpson in 1936. After an agreement was drawn up with Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (the tax man) it was sold to then King George VI.

Queen Elizabeth visited the estate annually in July after her official visit to Scotland, known as ‘royal week’, where she conducted official business at The Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. It is expected that King Charles will continue this tradition.

The highlight of a visit to Balmoral is the Ghillies Ballroom, the largest room in the castle and the only room accessible to the public. On display are artworks by Landseer and Haag, silver statues by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm, Minton China and artefacts from within the Castle. The Ballroom is still used as the venue for two big dances during His Majesty’s summer holiday at Balmoral. The Ghillies Ball has taken place every year since Queen Victoria’s reign.

Balmoral isn’t used for official crown business, however Queen Elizabeth II was in residence at Balmoral at the time of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997. After considerable pressure from Prime Minister Tony Blair and the media, the queen held a short press conference outside the gatehouse, an event that was dramatised in the 2006 film The Queen. It has also been the for other films and TV productions about royal life including Mrs Brown (1997) however other castles including Ardverikie House have been used for filming (Netflix The Crown).

Much of the rest of the castle is off-limits to visitors however those spaces that are available to the public and the grounds of the castle are fantastic and give a real insight into the history of the estate and day to day royal life.

The death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was announced on 8th September 2022 at 6.30pm from Balmoral Castle (age 96) ending her 70-year reign.

Balmoral Castle

When mentioning famous Scottish castles, the esteemed summer residence of the Royal Family is the first to come to mind. Balmoral Castle is set in the stunning Royal Deeside amidst the verdant Cairngorms National Park , with beautiful views on the right bank of the winding River Dee. It truly is no wonder that Balmoral Castle is the reprieve of choice for the British Royal Family (think of it as a Scottish Buckingham Palace), but they’re not the only ones who enjoy the castle and its grounds.

The Balmoral Estates are a frequently visited attraction for tourists exploring Scotland. There are many unique activities that you can enjoy while soaking in the sublime architecture, castle grounds & gardens, and many excellent rooms within. We’re here to break down a quick history of Balmoral Castle and what attractions you can look forward to while you’re here.

In This Post

History of Balmoral Castle

Balmoral’s history takes us back many centuries – a common phrase when discussing castles in the Scottish Highlands – to 1390. The original castle was reportedly built in the late 14th century but only purchased by the Royal Family in 1852. Balmoral was a gift from Prince Albert to his wife, Queen Victoria, who loved Scotland and its picturesque countryside.

More specifically, Queen Victoria found Balmoral to be an excellent property from which she could escape from the world of her responsibilities, noting that the location breathed freedom and peace. And while the rest of Scotland is prone to reasonably temperamental weather, Royal Deeside offers an excellent location with less drastic storms and cold fronts.

Since this initial purchase, Balmoral Castle has grown to 50,000 acres to accommodate the growing family and several luxurious rooms and amenities ideal for a summer holiday. Balmoral has served as the site for many of the Royal Family’s most important moments, including where King Charles III (then Prince Charles) & Princess Diana had their honeymoon and where their sons, Prince Harry and Prince William, learnt of their mother’s passing. Most recently, the late Queen Mother spent her last days at Balmoral Castle before being buried at Windsor Castle.

Much of the Royal Family’s history is captured in the rooms and hallways of Balmoral Castle, which makes the fact that it is open to the public an attractive prospect to add to your holiday to-do list.

How to Get There

“Where is Balmoral Castle?” is regularly asked by adventurers exploring Aberdeenshire and the Cairngorms National. Luckily, the Scottish holiday home of the Royal family is easily accessible from many different parts of the country. The most direct route to Balmoral Castle is from Aberdee n, with the A93 taking you directly from the bustling city to the closest town near Balmoral, Ballater .

If you need help determining if you’re going in the right direction, follow the River Dee upstream – it snakes right next to this famous castle.

Attractions at Balmoral Castle

Once you’ve arrived at the estate and packed at the car parks, you’ll see the many attractions that Balmoral Castle has hidden away. Remember that the Castle is not open all year round and has a strict schedule for when it is open to the public (usually between September and the new year). Keeping up to date on the Balmoral website is the best way to avoid suddenly ending your royal visit with bad news.

General admission to Balmoral Castle tickets costs £15 per adult or £6 for a child between 5 and 16. General admission tickets will allow you to explore the castle grounds surrounding the Castle, not the interior.

If you’re planning to visit Balmoral Castle or are looking for things to do at the estate, read our complete guide for the top attractions you can enjoy.

The Balmoral Expedition

The Balmoral Expedition is the premier option for those coming to Balmoral with a keen interest in exploring the surroundings around the castle. This 2-hour-long tour takes you around the expansive grounds of Balmoral Castle in a Landrover, with attractions and details pointed out to you by an informative tour guide.

The Balmoral Expedition lets guests have a chance to see the diverse wildlife that calls the region their home, including red squirrels, red deer, snow bunting, and even salmon! The Expedition also travels up the flanks of Lochnagar, one of the most famous mountains in Scotland, and offers supreme views out to the estate and the Cairngorms National Park .

This venture is one of the best ways to enjoy Balmoral Castle, and it costs £330 – a single ticket covers the trip for a group of six people.

Balmoral Coffee Shop

Once you’ve explored the Castle grounds and the surrounding area, wind down at the Balmoral Coffee Shop. The shop offers an excellent selection of baked goods, coffee, and a select choice of sandwiches.

There’s more on offer at Balmoral Coffee Shop, however, including an excellent range of royal experiences you can enjoy:

Morning Coffee & Cake Experience

While you’re on holiday, the idea of coffee and cake for breakfast is attractive and a must. The Morning Coffee & Cake Experience at Balmoral Castle offers guests the chance to enjoy a sublime selection of coffee, hot chocolates, and cakes. Sip and eat while enjoying the stunning views of the Balmoral Castle grounds.

This experience needs to be booked in advance and is served between 10:00 – 11:30 AM.

Afternoon Tea Experience

The natural complement to Morning Coffee & Cake is the Afternoon Tea Experience at Balmoral – a quintessentially British affair. In addition to a beautiful selection of teas, coffees, and hot chocolate, guests can look forward to a spread of scones, sandwiches, and cake as the afternoon sun lazily approaches the horizon.

There’s no better way to live out your Bridgerton fantasies than the Afternoon Tea Experience at Balmoral Castle. To secure your spot, book in advance and be at Balmoral between 13:00 and 16:00.

Watch the Squirrel Camera

Look no further than the red squirrel camera for those who can’t wait to experience Balmoral and its many attractions! This camera is pointed towards one of some of the most special residents of the Balmoral Estate – the red squirrels!

The red squirrels of Balmoral are beloved not only by visitors but also by the Royal Family. King Charles was fond of the squirrels – even letting them into each room in the castle and giving them names. Charles later took an active role as the Red Squirrel Survival Trust patron.

This endangered species has recently seen a population decline, so it’s lucky to see them scurrying across the castle’s grounds. If you don’t see them during your visit, the red squirrel camera on Balmoral Castle’s website is your next best bet.

See the Beautiful Grounds & Gardens

The main attraction at Balmoral Castle is its gorgeous grounds and gardens. Walking across the bountiful lands is right out of the fairy tale fantasy, with the perfectly manicured trees and grass offering a delightful way to enjoy an evening.

When visiting Balmoral Castle, there are several routes, including Albert’s Pyramid Walk, which takes visitors on a short walk or drive past the peculiar and intricate pyramids. The Castle’s Water Garden is exceptionally splendid and a veritable watering hole for many of the fauna that visit Balmoral Castle.

Visit the Mews Gift Shop

Need a souvenir to remember your trip to Balmoral Castle? Visiting the Mews Gift Shop on the estate is ideal for exploring. You can enjoy several commemorative pieces within the physical and online Mews Gift Shop, including mugs, whiskies, gins, clothing, and even a few goods for friends and family members back home.

Balmoral Tweeds, Paddington Bear Mugs, and many more Scottish and Royal gifts are readily available for those visiting Balmoral.

Take an Audio Tour of the Castle Grounds

One of the best guided tours that will take you through Balmoral Castle and its surrounding gardens is the guided audio tour, with options for English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, and Spanish translations. The audio tour informs you of the fascinating Balmoral Castle’s history, lasting for about an hour.

It’s the perfect way to navigate the grounds and even take you into the Ballroom – the only piece of Balmoral’s interior available for the public. Request an audio guide when booking your ticket to the Castle’s grounds.

Play a Round at Balmoral’s Golf Course

Only a few visitors know you can play golf on the Balmoral Estate, but a select few can enjoy a 9-hole/ 18 tee parkland golf course with excellent views of the Castle and surrounding gardens. Unfortunately, Balmoral’s golf course is not open to the public but is available to play if a member of its golf club invites you.

The golf course spans nearly 5,000 yards, exceptionally long for a 9-hole course and boasts a par 67 challenge for budding golfers.

Explore the Ballroom at Balmoral

While Balmoral Castle’s interior is usually closed to the public, the Ballroom is the exception. The Ballroom is a beautiful space, with plenty of photos of the other rooms within the building, pictures of the late Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, and the royal couple.

The Ballroom is also a historic part of Balmoral, with Queen Elizabeth’s coffins resting here for the staff to pay their respects before being taken back to London.

Pony Stud Tours

Equestrian lovers should book one of the Pony Stud Tours available at Balmoral Castle, Scotland. You can learn plenty about the Balmoral Highland Ponies that the Stud Team at Balmoral take care of and use to work the estate’s lands.

That’s only some of you can learn about, though, as the Pony Studs Tour team is more than happy for you to interact with the young Balmoral Highland Pony foals and see these stallions in action. Those who’ve never visited Scotland will love the Balmoral Highland Pony Tours.

This Pony Stud tour costs around £480 plus an additional booking fee.

  • U3567QVsusans 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A Tour of Aberdeenshire We loved our visit to Balmoral Castle, the Royal Distillary, and Dunnottar Castle. It was an exciting experience for me to walk the grounds near River Dee where the Royal Family barbecues annually. The Royal Ballroom offered photographs and paintings of the RF to view. Ghillies dresses and Highlanders garb worn by the RF were on display and a delight to take in and remember forever. Learning about the methods of whiskey distilling and tasting the product of Lochnagar Whiskey was unique. I especially liked the whiskey tasting. My favorite was the whiskey that had been encased in sherry casks. Castle Dunnottar was breathtaking and a physical challenge for me to descend and then ascend the 260 steps in order to navigate the ruins. It was just lovely! Our tour guide Malcolm was very knowledgeable about each of the places we visited and was a great assist the whole day. 😊 Read more Written June 20, 2023

He picked us up from our hotel and took us to 3 castles that we got to choose in advance. He even showed us around Old Aberdeen and dropped us off in the city center an hour after our tour was supposed to have ended! He knows a lot about Scotland and Aberdeen’s history so it was really interesting hearing some of that. • ScottP97124 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An Extraordinary Experience Malcolm was fantastic! My husband and I both have Scottish ancestry and have talked of a trip to Scotland for a long time, so when we booked a rail tour of the country, I knew I wanted to go to Dunnottar Castle, my ancestral home. The tour operator didn't have an excursion available, so we booked a private day tour through Time Exposure Travel. The list of sights for the day was long, but Malcolm told us from the beginning that we could choose where to spend our time and we'd see everything we could. Taking us to the various locations is one thing, but Malcolm did so much more. He explained so much of the history and points of interest, and then allowed us to explore Dunnottar without rushing. A talented photographer, he sent us photos he had taken of us which were so much better than we could have taken ourselves. Malcolm encouraged us to take time to learn and experience everything we could. It was a major highlight of our trip and worth the modest cost. He then took us to other places in Aberdeenshire that we would not have seen otherwise, always adding historical information as we went. We didn't see everything on the proposed list, and that was OK. In the end, Malcolm made this day the experience of a lifetime. We are planning to return for another visit and expect to ask Malcolm to help us repeat the experience and see the rest of the sights in the area. Read more Written September 27, 2022

In addition to many other historic attractions we visited Dunnottar Castle, Drum Castle as well as Crathes Castle. His van is new and an excellent way to get around. He even took us for coffee (our treat) before we started on our adventure. We never once felt rushed, which we have experienced with other tours. Oddly enough the very next day my wife and I wandered down a dead end street on the backroads of Balmoral the day after and ran in to Malcolm, who had another couple with him. We talked a while and he explained what a Scotish "dead end" looks like and directed us to a secret Castle not far from where we were. We could not recommend him more. Thank you Malcolm for a great time! Read more Written May 31, 2022
