MSC’s Supply Chain and Fleet Certified for Highest Standards of Food Safety

  • June 7, 2021

msc cruise ships catering and services international n.v

MSC Cruises has announced that it has become the industry’s first major line to have its entire food safety supply chain and fleet of ships certified for onboard food safety by the global International Organization for Standardization, commonly known as ISO.

The company heralded its celebratory success on the World Health Organization’s ‘World Food Safety Day 2021’ today, following the granting of the internationally acclaimed and recognized ISO22000 food safety management system certification for 17 of the Company’s ships.

“(W)e’re extremely proud to be on top of the cruise industry’s league table for WHO’s World Food Safety Day with our fleet of ships and delighted that our entire food supply chain ‘from farm to fork’ has been certified,” said Genoa-based Managing Director of MSC Cruises’ Food and Beverage Division, Paolo Raia.

“We have demonstrated at MSC Cruises that our industry-leading health and safety protocol goes above and beyond what regulatory authorities demand, and it’s no different with food safety as we always strive to go one step further than what is required,” he added.

MSC’s two new vessels for 2021 – the MSC Virtuosa and MSC Seashore – are on track to be certified in the next few months, the cruise line said.

Onboard audits are undertaken by Bureau Veritas to verify that the highest standards of food safety are undertaken by MSC Cruises for its guests and crew. This year alone, MSC said, Bureau Veritas has conducted 36 separate audit days and examined more than 5,000 food safety records onboard the cruise line’s ships.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, MSC Cruises annually served up nearly 285 million dishes and poured more than 125 million drinks for its guests, according to a press release.

Raja said that food safety is “understandably” taken for granted within day-to-day society.

“A cruise ship needs to have a systematic, well-considered and planned approach in place to guarantee the food safety for guests and crew onboard,” he said.

The Best and Worst MSC Cruise Ships: Full Ranking for 2024!

Photo of author

January 16, 2024

msc cruise ships best and worst

MSC Cruises, has a fleet of 21 impressive ships . A very high number that offers a wide range of choices for travelers. However, this variety can sometimes be confusing when trying to find the ideal cruise.

To better guide potential customers, I decided to create a ranking that orders ships from the best to the worst based on customer reviews gathered from major cruise websites. After calculating the average score, it emerged that MSC Bellissima , launched in 2019 as part of the Meraviglia class, is the most liked ship. In contrast, despite being one of the newest, the MSC Seascape ranks last according to customer reviews.

Let’s see every ship in detail!

Table of Contents

1. MSC Bellissima

Launched in 2019, Bellissima offers a sophisticated cruising experience with a focus on technology and comfort. Reviews often highlight the high quality of food at both the buffet and restaurants. However, there are mixed opinions on the adoption of overly technological solutions, such as the need to use the “MSC for me” app. Some reviews also note occasionally slow service and excessive crowding in the main venues.

From the opinions, it emerges that MSC Bellissima is the best ship in many aspects, most notably for its excellent cleanliness of the cabins and throughout the ship decks. Passengers also consider it the best ship in terms of size: not too big, not too small.

2. MSC Seaside

MSC Seaside, launched in 2017, is second in the list of the most appreciated ships. The idea of the ship is to emphasize its connection with the sea. Among its strengths is the wonderful outdoor deck that offers breathtaking and panoramic views of the sea and the ports visited. At the same time, as a downside, some customers said that the outdoor areas can’t be used in bad weather.

For this reason, cruisers consider it one of the best ships for cruises during the summer or for cruises in warm destinations.

3. MSC Sinfonia

MSC Sinfonia was lower in the ranking but climbed several positions after undergoing modernization works in 2015. The ship is loved because it has a more cozy and intimate environment, making it the preferred choice for guests who like smaller ships.

Reviews highlight the ease of moving on board and the more attentive service for the fewer passengers. However, the drawbacks include more limited entertainment options compared to larger ships.

4. MSC Seaview

Launched in 2018, Seaview offers an experience similar to Seaside, with a focus on outdoor areas. Therefore, its strengths include spacious outdoor decks, swimming pools, and numerous outdoor activities.

Some passengers found it a bit too crowded, and as with Seaside, good weather during the cruise is needed to enjoy all the best spaces.

5. MSC Meraviglia

MSC Meraviglia is a state-of-the-art ship with a spectacular LED promenade and a wide range of entertainment options. Guests have greatly enjoyed the variety of onboard activities available for all ages, from an excellent mini-club to adult entertainment. Everyone also liked the ship’s interior design, which was considered luxurious and elegant.

Like many larger ships, some negative reviews mention excessive crowding in common areas, but only during peak season.

6. MSC Divina

MSC Divina is one of those ships that is in the middle ground, neither too old nor one of the newest. Launched in 2012, it is renowned for its elegance and sophisticated design.

It has gained many points for the refined atmosphere onboard and a good selection of restaurants. In short, it is an excellent ship for those who are looking for a good ship without excesses.

7. MSC Preziosa

MSC Preziosa, launched in 2013, is the sister ship of the Divina I mentioned earlier. Being very similar ships, the customer ratings were almost identical. The only thing that changes is the interior decor in terms of colors and design. The spaces, however, remain mostly unchanged.

8. MSC Grandiosa

MSC Grandiosa was the first ship of the Meraviglia-Plus class, very similar to the Meraviglia class but with some improvements and a slightly larger gross tonnage. The ship is renowned for its imposing size and wide range of entertainment. On board, there are many restaurants and recreational activities. At the same time, the ship may seem a bit complicated, especially for inexperienced cruise passengers.

9. MSC Musica

Inaugurated in 2006, MSC Musica combines classic design with modern comforts. It is a medium-sized ship, so it has attracted positive reviews from those seeking relaxation. The atmosphere onboard is calm and relaxed, without crowds or large groups of people.

The flaws, however, are those that emerge with older ships. Being a 2006 ship, the years are showing, although it still appears well-maintained overall.

10. MSC Splendida

Splendida, the sister ship of Fantasia, offers elegance, comfort, and fun. Guests generally like the ship overall, finding it to be the right size and spacious. The entertainment on this ship has been particularly well-received, with guests reporting never feeling bored.

However, there are some criticisms regarding the food, perhaps explaining why this ship is only in the middle of the rankings.

11. MSC Virtuosa

Launched in 2021, MSC Virtuosa is one of the newest ships in the fleet. It stands out for its technological innovations and entertainment options, offering cutting-edge technology and a wide variety of fun activities.

However, like many other ships, its main drawback is overcrowding. Several customers have complained about long lines at both the buffet and reception.

12. MSC World Europa

The flagship, MSC World Europa, is at the twelfth position in the ranking of MSC Cruises’ best and worst ships. It is the newest ship, launched in 2022, and is inherently the most innovative with cutting-edge technology. The main criticism is the difficulty in moving around inside the ship, with some cruisers finding it too sprawling.

13. MSC Armonia

MSC Armonia is the oldest ship in the MSC fleet. It was launched in 2001 but renovated in 2014. Contrary to what some might think, the oldest ship is not necessarily the worst.

MSC Armonia has received good reviews for offering a more classic and intimate experience. The ship provides a welcoming and personal atmosphere that is perfect for those seeking a quieter cruise. The drawbacks are what you might expect: as the smallest ship, it has fewer restaurant and entertainment options than the larger ships.

14. MSC Seashore

MSC Seashore was the first ship of the Seaside EVO class, essentially an enhanced version of its sister ships Seaside and Seaview. Its strengths include more spacious cabins and excellent outdoor areas. However, like the other ships, the main drawbacks include overcrowded areas and sometimes a lack of good service.

15. MSC Fantasia

Launched in 2008, MSC Fantasia combines luxury and innovation. Although it was an excellent ship, several years have passed since its launch, and it’s starting to show signs of aging compared to newer ships.

However, the reviews still have a good rating and classify her as a good cruise ship.

16. MSC Magnifica

MSC Magnifica blends traditional style with modernity. Launched in 2010, it belongs to the Musica class but is slightly larger than its three sisters (Orchestra, Musica, and Poesia). Its positive points are the good mix of restaurants and entertainment activities, suitable for all ages. However, it lacks some features found in the newer fleet.

17. MSC Poesia

MSC Poesia launched just before MSC Magnifica (mentioned previously), is known for its calm environment, perfect for a stress-free cruise. The cabins are comfortable, and there’s a good variety of culinary choices onboard.

18. MSC Lirica

MSC Lirica is one of the older ships in the company’s fleet, but it was renovated in 2015. Despite the renovation, its age is pronounced, and some guests find it quite visible. It may be a good choice for travelers who are more focused on the itinerary and destinations than the ship itself.

19. MSC Orchestra

Launched in 2007, MSC Orchestra offers a good combination of relaxation and entertainment. Although not very large, it has a diverse selection of restaurants and bars and a well-structured entertainment program. However, cruisers have found the layout of the spaces sometimes confusing, and it may lack some of the attractions of newer ships.

20. MSC Opera

MSC Opera is almost at the bottom of the MSC ship rankings. Thus, cruisers consider it one of the worst ships. It’s relatively small, which might limit daytime activities or food options. It could be a good choice for experienced cruisers who know what they want and what to expect from a smaller ship.

21. MSC Seascape

Surprisingly, according to reviews, MSC Seascape, launched in 2022, is considered the worst ship of the cruise line.

Despite being a brand-new ship, passengers might have high expectations for new vessels and end up disappointed, even by minor flaws. Seascape is known for its revolutionary design; many passengers find it appealing. They also love the ship’s stunning interiors and the excellent entertainment and dining options. However, as with similar ships, criticism mainly comes from the overcrowding and the not-so-good service quality.

15 Things You Need To Know Before Cruising With MSC

MSC Cruise - Things to Know Before You Cruise

Sharing is caring!

Stepping onto my first MSC cruise, I was prepared for a different cruise experience. I found myself in a state of uncertainty, unsure if I would fall in love with the experience or be left disappointed.

Since MSC Cruises is an Italian cruise line, the onboard experience is somewhat different from that of most mainstream cruise lines. These differences lead to a lot of uncertainty around MSC, which causes many cruisers to wonder if they would enjoy the experience.

While MSC Cruises may be different, the experience is undeniably enjoyable. However, there are some key aspects that every cruiser should be aware of before embarking on their first MSC cruise.

In this post, I share everything you should know before you take your first MSC cruise. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned cruise, this will help you know what to expect on an MSC cruise.

MSC Seascape Infinity Pool

15 Things To Know Before Cruising With MSC

1. the food on msc is different from other cruise lines.

MSC Seascape main dining room dinner

If you’ve been on contemporary mainstream cruise lines like Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, or Carnival, you’ll find MSC’s dining experience different. In particular, MSC cruise ships have fewer casual dining options.

Onboard MSC, you can eat in the buffet, main dining room, or specialty restaurants. Unlike other mainstream cruise lines, there’s no pool-side grill, cafe or included casual fast food options disbursed around the cruise ship.

MSC cruise pizza

Throughout the day, the main place to eat is in the buffet. However, the buffet onboard MSC is good and plentiful, serving a variety of classical American dishes, Italian dishes, fresh fruit, and other healthy options. There’s also MSC’s famous pizza, which lives up to the hype.

Furthermore, the buffet has a kids-only section, serving children’s food options at a lower counter height.

MSC cruise kids buffet

Before we went on our MSC Seascape cruise, we heard some mixed reviews and criticisms of the food onboard. However, in our experience, the food was quite tasty, and there was always a wide variety of choices.

2. MSC Safety Drill

MSC Seascape

MSC’s safety drill is done a little differently from most other cruise lines. This is important to know as it’s one of the things you’ll need to do on embarkation day.

Nowadays, most cruise lines have a virtual or e-muster drill, which includes watching a safety video on a cell phone via the cruise line app, as well as a check in at the muster station. It’s fast and efficient.

However, this is just one thing that is different about boarding day on an MSC cruise.

On MSC cruises, you must watch the safety video on your stateroom TV, then use the in cabin phone and call #881 to confirm this is done. You’ll also need to check-in at your muster station and have your cruise card scanned.

This is definately something I wish I knew before I went on my first MSC cruise. It only takes an extra few minutes, but it’s important to be aware.

3. Elevators

MSC Cruises has a different elevator system than traditional cruise lines. Instead of pressing a button to go up or down, you press which floor you’d like to go to on a screen outside of the elevator, and then it will assign you an elevator.

Although this elevator system differs, I have seen a similar elevator system on Carnival Venezia and the brand-new Sun Princess .

The elevators are different and takes some time to get used to. While sometimes we felt like we waited longer than on other cruise ships, it is fast and efficient when the cruise ship is quiet. The best part is that an accurate waiting time is indicated.

4. Bring a White Outfit

MSC Seascape White Party

When you cruise with MSC, packing a white outfit is important. During your MSC cruise, you’ll have a white party, during which everyone will dress in white. The white night begins at dinner and ends with a deck party!

One of the most memorable aspects of our MSC cruise was the white night event. I was pleasantly surprised to see how many people had packed their best white outfits , ready to join in the fun.

The fact that every cruise passenger participated, from the youngest to the oldest, created a sense of unity and made the white night even more special.

Our cruise was filled with a variety of themed parties, from a tropical party to the glow party. Each one was a unique experience, offering a different atmosphere and style of entertainment.

These themed parties are a must-attend and a fun time for everyone.

5. Guests Speak Many Different Languages

MSC cruises

When you sail with MSC, be prepared for guests to speak different languages. Compared to American cruise lines, MSC passengers come from all over the world.

During our cruise, I heard people speaking English, French, Spanish, German, Dutch, Portugese, Mandarin and more. Although you may hear many unfamiliar languages, this created a unique cruising experience.

At times, you may be in an elevator, and you’ll hear 5 different languages being spoken. For the most part, cruise passengers understand English. However, it’s not the first language for many people on an MSC cruise.

Rest assured, the crew onboard MSC is fluent in English, ensuring smooth and effortless communication throughout your cruise vacation.

6. Status Match

The MSC Status Match program allows cruise passengers to receive comparable or even better loyalty benefits than they would receive on other cruise lines.

To receive the benefits, you must join the MSC Voyagers Club. Once approved, you will receive an immediate 5% discount on any future MSC cruises, onboard discounts for spa services, photo packages, Wi-Fi, complimentary gifts, and other valuable savings.

If you have a high status on another cruise line, you’ll definitely want to apply for the MSC Voyagers Club. They offer some great benefits that are worth taking advantage of.

7. MSC Cruise Ship Hot Tubs Aren’t Actually Hot

MSC cruise hot tub

Something that is very different on an MSC cruise is the hot tubs. To our surprise, the hot tubs onboard were not hot!

Instead, the hot tubs were lukewarm at best, which wasn’t exactly our cup of tea. When checking the various hot tubs around the cruise ship, we came to find out that this was the norm, unless you were at the spa.

If you like a very warm or hot traditional jacuzzi style hot tub, you might be dissapointed.

8. Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve Private Island

MSC Ocean Cay

If you’re taking a Caribbean cruise with MSC, there’s a good chance that your itinerary will include Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. Ocean Cay is MSC’s private island , and it is a perfect place for an amazing beach day.

When you visit Ocean Cay, you’ll have free beach access and lounge chairs, and your drink package works on land. Furthermore, if you’ve purchased the ship’s Wi-Fi, you will get Wi-Fi on the island.

The private island consists of eight different beach areas, each offering a unique ambiance. You’ll also find several bars, a charming lighthouse, and an included dining when you where you can eat a delicious barbecue buffet lunch.

9. MSC For Me Wristband

MSC cruises wristband

In addition to a cruise card, MSC has an optional wristband wearable device available at an extra charge. The MSC For Me waterproof wearable device has some similarities to the  Princess Medallion  or The Band on Virgin Voyages .

With the MSC Wristband, you can get into your room and get drinks instead of using your cruise card. However, you do still need to use your cruise card to get on and off the cruise ship in ports of call.

The MSC For Me Wristband is available for guests to purchase onboard most newer MSC cruises. However, The MSC Wristband is provided free of charge for Yacht Club and Aurea members.

10. Bars Serve Espresso and Specialty Coffee

MSC offers a unique feature that you won’t find on other cruise ships – specialty coffee and espresso served at all the bars. As a coffee lover, I really enjoyed this feature.

Rather than having to go to a cafe in the atrium or promenade (like on other cruise ships), on MSC you can order a coffee at any of the bars. This was super convenient, as I never had to wait in long lines to get my morning coffee.

11. Certain Activities Cost Extra

MSC Robotron

It’s important to note that certain activities have an additional charge onboard MSC cruise ships. Attractions like Robotron and the Formula 1 Racing Simulator have an extra charge.

However, there are also many fun activities that are free or included. For example, on our recent MSC Seascape cruise, the Pirates Cove Aqua Park and 4 water slides were included.

MSC cruise Pirates Cove

You’ll also find a kid’s club, sports court and other included activities and entertainment options that the whole family can enjoy.

12. There Won’t Be Many Americans on European Sailings

Since MSC is a European cruise line, they are much more popular in Europe than they are in North America. So, if you’re thinking of booking an MSC cruise in Europe, something to know is that Americans won’t make up the majority of passengers.

Typically, MSC sailings in Europe attract more Europeans than Americans. There’s nothing wrong with this, but it can be a different cruise experience than other American cruise lines.

For example, announcements are likely to be in several languages, the entertainment may rely on music and visuals, so as to appeal to the multiple languages of the guests.

While MSC is growing rapidly in the USA and attracting more American and Canadian passengers for Caribbean and other North American sailings, MSC’s European cruises will feel a bit different.

13. Different Booking Process

MSC cruise balcony cabin Fantastica

It’s important to know that MSC has a different booking process and offers three different types of cruise experiences at different price points.

Bella is your introductory package, Fantastica is the mid-tier package, which includes choosing your own dining time and a few perks, and Aurea includes spa access and other perks.

Before booking your cruise, it’s important to consider which package aligns with your budget and vacation style. We, for instance, found the Fantastica package to be a perfect fit for our needs and thoroughly enjoyed our cruise.

14. MSC Yacht Club

MSC Seascape Top 19

MSC Yacht Club is for those who want the ultimate cruise experience. You’ll have access to private dining venues, an exclusive sun deck, and 24-hour butler service when you’re a Yacht Club member.

You’ll also get priority check-in and check-out, the premium drinks package, the premium Wi-Fi package, and a dedicated concierge.

While we didn’t have the opportunity to experience the MSC Yacht Club on our recent MSC cruise, we were captivated by this exclusive retreat. In fact, we’ve heard from many cruisers who have tried MSC Yacht Club and say they could never go back!

It’s a testament to the fact that the MSC Yacht Club offers a transformative experience that can truly enhance your cruise vacation.

15. The Pizza Lives Up to the Hype

Since MSC Cruises is an Italian cruise line, they are known for having some of the best cruise pizza at sea. As a pizza lover, I have to admit that MSC really does have a great pizza!

The pizza they served had large slices, was freshly made, and they offered a variety of tasty flavors. When you sail with MSC, you have to give their pizza a try.

Bonus: Download The MSC App

If you have an upcoming MSC cruise, remember to download the MSC App!

On the MSC App, you can view your daily activities and dining times, book excursions, dining reservations, and spa appointments, and access your spa treatments. It’s best to download the app in advance, as the Wi-Fi may not be great at the cruise port.

Final Thoughts On Things To Know About Cruising With MSC

MSC Cruises is one of my favorite cruise lines as it has a great variety of activities and a fun nightlife, and they offer a unique cruising experience.

As someone who has taken over 35 cruises, cruising with MSC was a better than I expected. The price was competitive and the experience was in line with what we would expect from a contemporary cruise line.

Although MSC may not be for everyone, it is worth trying. You never know, you may just love it!

Have you taken an MSC Cruise, or would you consider it? Please let me know in the comments below.

Happy Cruising!

Everything You Need to Know about MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises

You may not have heard of MSC Cruises, but they’re planning on that changing with the launch of their first purpose-built cruise ship for the North American cruise market, aggressive pricing strategy and national media campaigns. With 13 ships including the recently launched MSC Meraviglia in May 2017, MSC Cruises is the largest privately owned cruise line in the world. They have their eyes on growth within North America and the rest of the world with an impressive 10 additional new ships scheduled for delivery by 2026.

MSC Cruises from North America

The MSC Divina has been sailing year round from Miami since 2013, after being re-positioned from Europe and has been well received by cruisers. In December 2017, MSC Cruises will launch the MSC Seaside. As the first ship designed specifically for North America, MSC Seaside will home port year-round in Miami, Florida and offer weekly alternating Eastern & Western Caribbean itineraries. The design of the the MSC Seaside is a departure from most modern cruise ships. In fact, her aft section resembles more of a South Beach condo and will fit perfectly in her new home. MSC has taken elements from other cruise lines and made then even better on the MSC Seaside. Grand exterior promenades, dual ziplines, expansive private sundeck area for suite guests and a multitude of dining options are just some of features guests will experience onboard. At the same time, MSC Cruises will have a newly refurbished terminal at Port Miami to be able to handle the increased capacity of MSC Seaside year-round and MSC Divina (during winter season). MSC Cruises has also announced plans to bring MSC Meraviglia to Miami in 2019.

Six Things to Know about MSC Cruises

1. loyalty status match program.

Every cruise line offers a loyalty program where you receive varying level of benefits depending on the number of cruises you have taken. How would you like to receive benefits onboard MSC ships including a 5% discount before your very first cruise?

MSC Cruises has a program called Status Match. The free program allows anyone, even if they’ve never cruised with MSC before, to receive a matched level of benefits based on other cruise line or hotel loyalty programs they belong to. The process is initiated by completing a simple form on MSC Cruises Website where you would register for their MSC Voyagers Club by providing your pertinent contact information and proof of other loyalty program membership. It is important to note that this matching process can only be done once per account, so make sure you match to the loyalty program where you have the highest status. Varying cruise line and hotel loyalty programs will be weighted differently and your starting level in MSC Voyagers Club will be based on your other program’s current level.

Here are examples of status matching to Royal Caribbean Crown & Anchor Loyalty Program. Download Full list of MSC Voyagers Club Benefits

2. Pay For Inclusive Experiences

Many cruise lines are now offering bundled or almost all-inclusive programs. Typically, it’s an all-or-nothing offer, so the ability to “opt-out” to get a lower price is not always an option. Additionally, these offers do not have any affect on your accommodation or dining selections. MSC Cruises offers a tiered pricing structure where you pay for the “Experience” that suits you. Each Experience has varying inclusions and certain ones are tied to the selection of specific room accommodations.

Pricing will vary for each experience. The lowest prices are typically in the Bella Experience, however, there are certain promotions where it may be a better deal to book under the Fantastica Experience.

3. MSC Yacht Club

MSC Cruises is certainly not the first cruise line to offer an exclusive ship-within-a-ship area featuring a higher level of services and amenities, however, compared to other cruise lines, the MSC Yacht Club VIP accommodations are the epitome of luxury and priced well below similar offerings.

The amount of space and amenities of the MSC Yacht Club vary by ship, but all offer the same inclusions.

All MSC Yacht Club Accommodations Feature:

  • Lavishly appointed suites, exclusive 24-hour butler service and a dedicated concierge
  • All-inclusive meals served at your preferred time in the private restaurant and unlimited drinks in all MSC Yacht Club areas, all bars and restaurants throughout the ship, and from your mini-bar. Exclusive access to The One Sun Deck and Top Sail Lounge are just some of the other privileges. • Free Unlimited drinks in the MSC Yacht Club, your mini-bar and all onboard bars and restaurants (according to the drink selection available in the different venues)
  • Private access to the MSC Aurea Spa

4. Kids Sail Free Year-Round

In addition to the competitive fares MSC Cruises has been offering, they also offer a Kids Sail Free program on select sailings year-round. At a time where many cruise lines are charging substantial prices for kids occupying 3rd and 4th berths, you can save a lot of money on bringing the kids 11 and under. While not available on every cruise, we’ve found that even some holiday and peak-travel periods had Kids Sail Free offered. They even offer free kids 12-17 during off-peak times of the year.

Even with kids being free, it wouldn’t be worth it if they are bored and have nothing to do. That’s not going to be a problem on MSC ships. They’ve partnered with Chicco and Lego to provide fun onboard programs and their newest ships are full of exciting activities like themed kids & teen clubs, water parks, 4D cinema, zip line and more.

In order to qualify to cruise for free, kids must sail as 3rd/4th guests when sharing a stateroom with 2 full-fare paying adults.

5. European Hospitality

An MSC cruise may take you to the Bahamas, Caribbean or other international destination, but, you’ll always feel the Mediterranean elegance and charm of the ship and the dedicated multilingual crew. The European presence extends to the authentic cuisine and attention to detail in the preparation and service and some of the best pizza you’ll find at sea.

6. Stunning Cruise Ships

No matter which MSC ship you sail on, you’ll quickly take notice of the quality of the design and construction, rich materials and comfortable and elegant spaces. You’ll find real marble and wood used all over the ship. An absolute showstopper and ideal spot for a formal photo are the Swarovski crystal staircases found on MSC Divina, Fantasia, Preziosa, Splendida and the new MSC Meraviglia and MSC Seaside.

Cruising with MSC – Top Tips Before Booking

I’ve put together this article to help you choose if MSC is the right cruise line for you and whether you should consider cruising with MSC.

About MSC cruises

MSC, founded in 1989 in Italy and is now based in Switzerland. It has a global operation and is the largest privately owned cruise company. It forms part of the massive MSC shipping company. Its current fleet at the time of writing, comprises 17 ships with a further 12 ships on order and due to come on line by 2027. MSC is the fourth largest cruise company in the world. In 2019 MSC signed a 100-year lease on a Bahamian island to create Ocean Cay MSC marine reserve, exclusively for MSC ships and guests.

MSC ship in Genoa

MSC pricing structure and brands

MSC’s pricing structure, in my opinion, is excellent. With a move away from confusing perks and add-ons, customers choose, at the point of booking, their cabin type and then choose the ‘experience’ they would like to enjoy and from this the final price is calculated.

This ‘build your own package’ system makes cruising with MSC very affordable.

Each experience includes different packages.

  • The Bella experience is the lead-in package and doesn’t include drinks package, spa or any other frills. It is ideal for non-drinkers and people who wish to keep their cruise experience lower-cost and simple.
  • The next tier is the Fantastica experience. This includes room service with no delivery charge and free breakfast room service. Also included is a 50% discount on personal training, wider choice of cabins, priority when choosing dining time and a free photo.
  • The all-inclusive Aurea experience offers great value and includes, along with the perks of the Fantastica experience, beverage package, priority boarding, any time dining, free access to exclusive sundeck, a free massage, complimentary use of the Aurea spa, spa cocktail, relaxation amenities (bath robe and slippers) and a free MSC gift.

MSC Yacht Club

MSC Yacht Club is a ‘ship within a ship’, almost like a private club onboard. With a choice of luxurious suites, the services of a butler 24 hours and a private concierge to help your vacation run without a hitch, you could easily find yourself never wanting to leave.

MSC Yacht Club boasts an exclusive restaurant, bar lounge with enviable views to the front of the ship and private swimming pool. MSC Aurea spa is included and for days in port you can tailor-make your excursion and enjoy the destination your way. Don’t like to mix with the masses? MSC Yacht Club guests can enjoy private, out-of-hours shopping and jewellery viewings. Front row seats in the theatre are also reserved for MSC Yacht Club guests to enjoy being up close to the action. Find out more about MSC Yacht Club here .

The MSC onboard experience

MSC ships are stunning, opulently decorated with stairways studded with Swarovski crystals, elaborate chandeliers and enough bling scattered around to keep Madonna happy. The emphasis is on style and luxury, rather than gimmicks.

What I found refreshingly different about the interior of MSC ships, was the space and plentiful seating. Other cruise lines I have sailed with seem to place the emphasis on the outdoors, that’s great in the Caribbean most of the year but on rainy days and nights in Europe everyone is indoors. The wide selection of indoor seating venues on MSC ships is perfect, especially after an hour in your ‘killer heels’.

Atrium MSC Magnifica

MSC dining experience

You can eat like a king or queen when cruising with MSC. The larger MSC ships have a great range of eateries, the two main dining rooms are complimentary, as is the buffet. Speciality restaurants (fee payable) include the Eataly Steakhouse, La Cantina, American Sports Bar and a range of smaller snack outlets. MSC buffets (food now plated by staff) are famous for their Italian food, especially pizzas.

At the time of booking, guests can choose between early or late dining (for main dining rooms excluding buffet) or guests on the Aurea experience can dine at any time during the restaurant opening hours. It’s worth considering that on European cruises, many passengers will be southern Europeans who tend to eat later, so bear this in mind when selecting your dining time.

Food on MSC

MSC onboard entertainment

Particularly on European cruises, because of the vast range of guest nationalities, much of the entertainment is what they class as ‘non-vocal’ for example music, dance and singing rather than comedians or game shows. The theatre shows are fabulous and lavish just as you would find on ships from most major cruise lines.

MSC onboard vibe

Similar to many major cruise lines, MSC has moved away a little from the traditional formal-style cruising. That’s not to say you won’t seen men in tuxedos or women in floor-length cocktail gowns but there are no hard-set dress codes (apart from trousers for men in the main restaurants).

The emphasis is on enjoyment. Each night you can expect a theme night including the ubiquitous ‘White Party’ and also a ‘dress up or not’ night where the officers will be available for photos.

Dinner is usually linked to the various themes and on most cruises, on the last night, you may be surprised to see the famous MSC Baked Alaska being paraded round the dining room as passengers cheer and clap to show their appreciation.

Family cruising with MSC

In typical Italian style, families are well catered for with MSC, children from 0 to 17 are accepted in the different childrens’ clubs which are open every day.

Family cabins are perfect, with pull-down or sofa beds and an option for connecting cabin for families with older children. For an extra fee, children (and adults!) can enjoy the benefits of the ‘fun pass’ which allows unlimited access to arcade games.

MSC Aurea Spa

Relax in the luxurious spa, enjoy a massage after a long day exploring in port or keep fit in the state-of-the-art gym.

The Aurea Spa is free for guests with the Aurea experience and for Yacht Club guests. For other guests, passes are available to purchase. If you like to stay fit while on a cruise but don’t want to use the spa or gym facilities, all MSC ships have a jogging/walking track.

Cabin choice varies from ship to ship but all MSC ships have a wide choice of cabins to suit everyone, whether its about budget or personal preference.

Interior, outside and balcony cabins are a good size, with great bathroom facilities and decent sized closets. Go up a level with a suite which has a larger seating area and on some ships a larger balcony. The newer MSC ships have grand suites and family suites, along with suites with a whirlpool bath. Yacht Club suites vary in size ranging from Yacht Club interior suites, right up to the 62 sq metre Royal Suite. Take a look here

Aurea balcony suite

Where can I sail with MSC?

MSC has a great range of itineraries, some not offered by other cruise lines which tend to focus more on the Caribbean. Here are some ideas for cruising with MSC.

Cruise the Mediterranean and take in Italy , France, Spain, the Greek Isles, the Adriatic and many more destinations. Take a trip to South America and visit Brazil and Argentina. The Caribbean is of course featured in the wide range of itineraries as is the Middle East, South Africa and Asia. At certain times of year you can sail across the Atlantic between Europe and the Americas. For something extra special, consider the annual ‘World Cruise’ on the MSC Magnifica, now in its second year of this amazing trip. Experience places you have never seen before on this 120-day five-continent cruise.

Sailing into Kotor Montenegro

MSC Voyagers Club

As with most major cruise lines, MSC has its loyalty club. The Voyagers Club has fiver tiers, ranging from ‘Welcome’ to ‘Diamond’, each with a range of perks.

MSC will status-match loyalty levels from other cruise lines to entice new customers, remember to mention it at the time of booking. You will be required to provide proof of membership in another cruise loyalty scheme.

So what’s different about cruising with MSC?

If it’s your first time cruising with MSC, you may notice a few quirks or differences from other cruise lines.

MSC runs very flexible itinerary durations, therefore it is not unusual for passengers to embark and disembark at different ports in one cruise. For example, you may embark in Genoa, then the next day in Rome, another group of new passengers could come aboard! MSC attracts a wide range of nationalities, especially on European cruises, so expect to hear a whole host of languages spoken. If in doubt, a smile goes a long way! Announcements will be made in different languages too. Personally I found that there was less emphasis on hard selling onboard, unlike some other cruises I’ve been on. For example on some cruises, after a relaxing massage in the spa, the relaxation was washed away by the therapist trying to sell me a range of spa or beauty products. I once got talked into buying a 200 dollar face cream when I only went for a nail polish touch up! With MSC it was the other way around, I had to practically chase the lovely therapist through the spa in order to purchase some body oil! Top tip – on the last night onboard there are usually great offers in the shops and discounts on photos. Forgot to buy that lovely photo of you and your loved one gazing into each others eyes on the crystal staircase? Don’t worry, passengers on the newer ships can purchase them online after you arrive home. Visit mymscphotos.com MSC cruises tend to be a little lower-key than other cruise lines, as do the staff. First time MSC cruisers may find it unusual that they rarely see the room steward, that’s not to say your room isn’t made fresh and clean ever day, but the cabin staff are less interactive with guests. There is a choice of drinks packages. Easy, Premium and Premium Plus. The Easy package is perfectly adequate unless you prefer a wider choice of wines and premium spirits. Onboard payments are also handled differently. Most cruise lines will swipe your credit card at check in. With MSC there are machines onboard where you link a credit card to your onboard account. It is your responsibility to ensure everything is settled prior to disembarkation. One final difference is the tea! This is mostly important for many UK cruisers. MSC uses Yorkshire tea bags which gives a decent cuppa, unlike that ridiculous stuff on a piece of string!! Well done MSC!

Why cruising with MSC suits me

After being loyal to NCL for a number of years, last May I decided to change it up a bit after spotting online an MSC cruise with a great itinerary. We embarked (along with my Mother and Father- in-law!) in Genoa, Italy on the MSC Magnifica, one of the smaller in the fleet. The itinerary took in Italy, Corfu in the Greek Islands, Montenegro and Croatia, with disembarkation in Venice Italy. The itinerary was fabulous (but that’s for another article). The ship was excellent, we booked a suite with the Aurea experience and it was great value. The food was good and the staff were friendly and polite. The free-flowing Prosecco was definitely a bonus. We enjoyed evenings listening to live music in the bars and days exploring the ports or relaxing on the Aurea private sundeck. We took advantage of the spa, including the complimentary massage and we used the gym every day. We felt we got great value for money, the ship, although one of the older in the fleet, was stunning and the suite was spacious and luxurious. As Platinum card holders for NCL we were automatically given top-tier status which meant we enjoyed bottles of Prosecco in the room and my particular favourite, a chocolate replica ship (which I have to admit sat in my refrigerator at home for months before I could bring myself to eat it!)

You never know until you try!

I know I am itching to get back cruising and I have a a nice 125% cruise credit to use (From cancelled cruise in April 2020). I have earmarked a few cruising in April 2021 and think I’m going to push the boat out (excuse another pun) and go for the Yacht Club, you only live once, right? See you onboard sometime!

A word about the drinks on MSC Cruises

If you plan on enjoying your cruise without purchasing a drink package, you’ll see by the above menus that the prices of drinks really aren’t terrible compared to other cruise lines. However, a drink package is now more commonly included as a perk or incentive when booking a cruise with MSC . Even if there is a slight upcharge for an included Easy Package for you’re next cruise, you’ll likely find that it’s well worth it given that it includes bottled water, sodas and specialty coffee which is uncommon with most cruise lines.

Learn more about the MSC drink packages that are available and how they are used.

Thanks for this ! Do you know if the basic drink package covers say a bourbon and coke drink ?

You know, that’s a good question. Our travel buddies were ordering generic like rum & coke – Vodka Tonic, etc… but didn’t ever hear anyone order any basic Bourbon. BUT They did seem to have something included in the easy / basic package for all alcohol types, so I can only assume they have a bourbon. If not, you only pay the difference in price if what you want isn’t included in the Easy package. The few times I have done that, it’s only been $2 or so for better drinks.

Hi Phil, yesterday I sent a small message about the MSC transfer between Milan Malpensa Airport and Genoa Port. A small modification: we should get from Milan to Genoa in the morning of June 22, not June 21, so I would like the information (timetable, etc.) by the 22 of June.Sorry for the modification. Thanks in advance for your reply: Agnes

Hi Agnes – I’m unfortunately not famliar with how MSC Handles busses or shuttles from the Milan airport 🙁 – but I do know the transport is usually only on the morning of the cruise for when they DO offer shuttles. If you’re arriving early, you’ll be on your own to get to Genoa and it’s a few hours by train. The trains are generally pretty reliable an on time, but give yourself plenty of room to work with. You can use Rome2Rio (link) and plan a route or hire a private car (expect to spend 200 euro to get there though!). Here’s a link to private services on Viator

Hi! We have a cabin (Seaside from Genoa – 7 nights) for 4 people: 2 adults, 2 children, we have Easy Package for all four people. By definition, children do not drink alcoholic beverages, but my question is, is ice cream(for the children) included in Easy Packae? Thanks in advance: Agnes

Hi Agnes, I think if you call MSC, they will downgrade the kids to a soft drink package and save you money. As for icecream, it was available at the outside cafe at no charge but it will not cover the specialty ice cream / Gelato at Philippe Maury & Venchi Chocolate

Does the prices in the drinks menu include the gratuity? Or we have to add the 18% to know the total price?

Lizette, If you don’t have a drink package, and you are purchasing the drinks one by one, then you’ll pay the gratuity on top of the price you’re seeing. I believe the gratuity has just increased to 18% from 15%

We are two people traveling on MSC Meraviglia. Looking at these prices (some of them equal to or better than any hotel or Pub), I don’t think we are going to spend $560 (2 non-alcoholic packages) on water, coffee, and sodas in our 10-day cruise.

I agree- The prices really aren’t bad compared to other cruise lines! The packages make the most sense when they’re included as a promotion in the base fare at a discounted rate. I have friends that recently did a 2 week cruise with MSC and the drink packages were as much as the cruise. They declined and ended up spending a fraction of what the drink package would have been. Definitely worth doing the math!

how can i find out what brands of scotch are included in the easy plus package

Hi Bill & Susan, You can see the main menu above (first menu) and page 7 has “whisky” …. which they’ve sort of put all scotch and whisky together.

Remember it’s anything up to $10 per drink, so there are quite a few basic options available.

It’s explained on another page here that the Easy Package includes drinks up to $7.50, but I don’t see these drinks listed in the menu provided above, only the $9 ones. Did I miss something? Or is it $7.50 plus a 20% gratuity so it is $9.00 as listed on the menu which also includes the tip.

Hi Cory – If you look at the menu at the top of this page – and flip to the first page of the menu, it has the drinks up to 7.50 which are included in the “easy” package. MSC Generally has a menu for drinks that are part of the “Easy Package” and not all have a price associated with them (They’re just included). The $7.50 amount has been established since they now allow you to get a drink that is more than the $7.50 limit by paying the difference. I hope that makes sense!

Thanks! Don’t know how I missed that. I did the calculation and for our group of mostly light or non-drinkers, the packages don’t make financial sense when everybody has to get the same package, especially when we are going to be in port during most days and will get paid drinks there.

Sure! If you’re light drinkers, MSC Often has a promo for Easy or Easy plus as part of a cruise fare. I find that is the best way to go when it’s available since it covers everything from premium coffee & bottled water, etc. Not sure if you saw our MSC Drink Calculator (here) . This might help as well!

I noticed one can order bottles of wine pre cruise to be delivered to your stateroom. The prices for which seemed reasonable at @$32. My question is can you get a bottle at a bar on board and take it to your room or would there be a corkage fee?

Hi Kim! If you get the bottles onboard where they are available, you’ll pay a gratuity but not a true “corkage” fee by just taking them back to your room. So Expect to pay whatever their automatic gratuity / service charge is – but nothing else.

Hi. Are these prices in australian dollars?

Hello! The prices are in US dollars unless otherwise noted (sometimes we post prices in Euro, but it’s clearly stated).

Your not in Alice Springs anymore, mate!

Are these also the same prices if you were to buy the drinks a la carte?

Hi Josh – Yes, this is the ship-wide price list even if you’re paying for the drinks 1 at a time. For package customers, it’s a reference as to what the package will cover more than anything.
