Peru - World Class Dentistry

Peru's Machu Picchu

Country Profile

Peru, officially the Republic of Peru, is an extremely bio-diverse country with habitats ranging from the arid plains of the Pacific coastal region in the west to the peaks of the Andes mountains vertically extending from the north to the southeast of the country to the tropical Amazon Basin rainforest in the east with the Amazon river.

Peruvian territory was home to ancient cultures spanning from the Norte Chico civilization in Caral, one of the oldest in the world, to the Inca Empire, the largest state in Pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century and established a Viceroyalty with its capital in Lima, which included most of its South American colonies.

The Peruvian population, estimated at 31.2 million in 2015, is multi-ethnic, including Amerindians, Europeans, Africans and Asians. The main spoken language is Spanish, although a significant number of Peruvians speak Quechua or other native languages. This mixture of cultural traditions has resulted in a wide diversity of expressions in fields such as art, cuisine, literature, and music.

Telecommunications

Peru’s telecommunications market has grown significantly over recent years. Its economic development has attracted investments from local and international companies in all industries for geographic expansion and automation. However, subscriptions are largely concentrated in urban zones, and the indigenous populations live in areas such as the Andean mountains and Amazon jungle which are inaccessible to phone lines and Internet connections.

The fastest developing telecom markets include mobile telephony, fixed and mobile broadband, and pay TV.  Peruvian network operators currently face a challenge to expand 3G network coverage and  improve the quality of services. This will create opportunities for new advanced applications and services as well as increased revenue. Despite problems with inequality and population distribution with many isolated communities, new technologies are being adopted, increasing in turn the money spent on non-essential mobile and telecom services.

English Literacy

In 2014, President Ollanta Humala’s administration – which had already passed the University Act and created the National Superintendence of University Education (SUNAU or  Superintendencia Nacional de Educacion Superior Universitaria ) to oversee the university sector – set the goal of raising the country’s proficiency in English. In the past, the three official languages (Spanish, Quechua, and Aymara) were the focus, but the government has now established a goal to achieve national bilingualism by 2021. “This means implementing a state policy in education so that all our children can manage a foreign language. We will prioritize English,” said the President in a 2014 speech.

In order to create a bilingual nation more resources have been marshaled for both student learning and teacher training. Most Peruvians who attain English fluency do so by attending language institutes. The major barriers for Peruvians wishing to learn English are cost and time. Both relate to income level.

School System

Initial education is offered in crèches (under 3 years of age), nursery schools (from 3 to 5 years) and through non-school programs aimed at poor children in rural and marginal urban areas. According to the Constitution of 1993, one year of initial education is mandatory for the population of 5 years of age.

The next level is primary education, which has a duration of 6 years. It should be said that primary education used to last for only 5 years. To pass on from primary education, students need an average mark of 11 (20-point evaluation system) and to have passed at least language or mathematics.

Secondary education is organized in two cycles: the first applies to all pupils, lasts two years and is mandatory. This, together with primary education, constitute the obligatory block of education. The second cycle, lasting three years, is diversified, with arts, science and technical options. It is provided in two modes: for adolescents (12-16 year age group) and adults. According to the 1993 Constitution, secondary education is also mandatory.

Higher education is provided in higher schools and institutes, higher postgraduate centres and universities. The institutes offer training programs for teachers and a variety of technical training options in courses lasting not less than four or more than ten academic semesters. Institutes and higher schools award professional, technical and expert diplomas and also those for second and subsequent professional specialties. The universities award bachelor’s and master’s degrees and doctorates, as well as professional certificates and degrees, including those for second and subsequent professional specialties.

Higher Education

Higher education in Peru consists of technological colleges, both public and private. They offer courses lasting three years (approximately 3,000 hours of study), graduating with a title as Technical Professionals. Some courses may be four years in length (approximately 4,000 hours of study), and a student would graduate with the title of Professional.

Medical Education

Admission to higher education is based on completion of secondary school and having the requisite qualification, the  Certificado Oficial de Estudios de Educación Secundaria . Admission is competitive and very selective, especially to prestigious public and not-for profit institutions, so most universities also require a separate set of entrance examinations.

Students that choose particular universities that they wish to attend must sit admission examinations set by those universities. Some universities have two tiers of examinations, a general and a major-specific examination. Entrance exams are usually held once or twice a year during the holidays. Only universities ( universidades ) can confer the academic degrees of  Bachiller ,  Maestro  and  Doctor .

The Dentistry Profession

With ever increasing costs for dental care and treatment in Northern America and Europe, functional and healthy teeth not even mentioning the famous white smile remain for more and more patients beyond their reach. Others refuse to pay astronomical prices for standard treatments and bad service. Therefore many are looking for more affordable, but nevertheless top quality dental therapy abroad.

Peru became in the last few years one of the top destinations for dental tourists; and with good reason. In Peru it's easy to combine a reasonably priced, first class, necessary or desired dental treatment with the pleasure of traveling this amazing country.

Especially in Lima there are numerous first class dental clinics offering top notch dental treatment in any imaginable area including preventive, restorative and cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics and implantology for reasonable prices. Dentists are often specialists in their field and have studied and worked abroad or are trained according to international standards. For them the comfort of their patients and overall service is of the utmost importance. Clinics catering for dental tourists are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and use the latest techniques and materials.

Getting There for Dental Care

Jorge Chavez International Airport  (LIM), in Lima is Peru's main national and international gateway, with an estimate of 98% of all international flights into Peru landing at this airport.

With distances in Peru being so vast, many Peruvians and other travelers are increasingly flying to their destinations, as all Peruvian cities are within a two-hour flight of Lima. Most Peruvians, however, still get around the country by bus, a cheap way to travel with routes to almost everywhere. In a few cases, it’s possible to arrive by train – an interesting and sought-after experience itself – though these trips are considerably slower than the equivalent bus journeys.

Visitor Highlights

Peru is one of the most famous and popular countries in South America. Most people flock here to hike the Inca Trail and see Machu Picchu . Everything else takes a back seat. Lima and Cusco also get some minor attention but there is far more in this country that just these three major sites. Come explore the jungles, see the Amazon, head to Lake Titicaca , or to the beaches. Learn about local culture, try the coca tea. In short, stay longer and see lots. There’s more to Peru than Machu Picchu .

Patient reviews

Everything went as planned i am so pleased with the final results as i have the best smile ever.

I am from Peru but live in the US for the past 22 years. This is my second visit to Smiles Peru and I am nothing but greatful to the staff as they made me feel like family. Everyone there is so friendly and professional. They evaluated my dental condition and set a plan to restore my teeth in such a tight schedule of mine. Everything went as planned I am so pleased with the final results as I have the best smile ever. Thanks Doctor Alehandra and the other doctors and nurses who' were extremely patient with me. The place is SPOTLESS. The receptionists are so polite and helpful. I am at a lack of words to describe my experience at Smiles Peru and definitely recommend it to anybody that needs dental implants. The price is very accessible and one will surely be satisfied with the results. Thank you Smiles Peru.

Friendly environment, top-notch technology and excellent professionals

This is the best dental clinic you can land. They care about every single detail and now during this tough Covid19 times, they are going the extra mile taking all necessary precautions to minimize risks. Friendly environment, top-notch technology and excellent professionals where you feel safe and in good hands when dealing with any dental needs.

Very professional, wonderful staff and first-class dental treatment

What a wonderful experience. This is my fourth and final visit and I had major dental work completed with ease. Very professional, wonderful staff and first-class dental treatment. The apartment they provided was awesome. I wish I would have had this done years ago. Very pleased with the results. 5 stars to smiles Peru team!

We never felt that any procedure was rushed or quality sacrificed

My wife and I underwent several procedures including implants, root canal, a partial denture and fillings. We were a bit nervous about getting this done outside the US. But in the end, we thought the savings justified the risk. What we found was dental care that exceeded our experience with US clinics. The facility is large, modern, and spotless. It is well equipped including a lab for making crowns. Everyone dons masks, gloves, and head covers. But the real difference is the doctors. There are at least half a dozen doctors with different specialties and many more technicians. On a couple of occasions, the doctors would consult with each other while examining a tooth or reviewing an x-ray. Three people were in attendance while doing implants. We never felt that any procedure was rushed or quality sacrificed. In comparison, my US dentists have been sole proprietors trying to do everything. Or they have sent me to a specialist for a procedure like a root canal. Crowns are always done in a lab which takes a couple of weeks. Furthermore, it's not clear how good the work is since it is never peer reviewed. I highly recommend Smiles Peru. You will save money, time and be assured that the work is done to the highest standards.

Never thought I would say this about any dentist but I can't wait to go back!

Full mouth reconstruction I live in Washington DC and went to Smiles Peru back in August 2016. I planned a vacation to Peru based around my dental needs and the fact that I had some friends I wanted to visit. After doing some research I chose to go to Smiles Peru. From the minute I walked into their dental office the staff was really attentive to my needs and all were so nice to work with - from the dental assistants and orthodontists to the receptionist, office manager (Kirby) and, of course, Doctor Sylvia. I was in need of some serious work. We are talking full mouth reconstruction (not an easy fix), cutting down my old crowns and making some provisional ones, treating more than 15 root canals, performing gum surgery, making a new post for my new crowns, fixing cavities, and getting a full mouth of new crowns as mine were about 18 years old and in serious need of change. I switched my old ones for the all porcelain Emax crown. No more porcelain fused to metal crowns which gave my teeth an opaque look. Now they look more natural and translucent and the color is a lot whiter than when I had gotten them done with someone else 18 years ago. With the help of Dr. Sylvia Pflücker, we chose a bleach color between a 2 and a 3 as I was undecided between one or the other. I want to emphasize that I was never pressured on doing any work that I didn't absolutely want or need. I still have to go back to Peru to finish the work as I need some fine tuning. Despite the long appointments I had during my brief visit, I needed a lot of work and we ran out of time. I had to return to the US and it was entirely my fault for not planning a longer stay in Peru. But everyone did as much as they could with the time they had to work with. Let me say that you can't go wrong by investing your time and money with Smiles Peru. I will post an update when I am completely done with the work in early 2017.... Big thanks to all the people who took care of me! Never thought I would say this about any dentist but I can't wait to go back!

I was very pleased with the treatment and the cost

I was very pleased with my treatment at smiles Peru in April 2016. My US dentist said I had a cracked molar and needed to get a crown within a year or two. Smiles Peru by email quoted me a full price of $400, including $60 for the initial examination. That was exactly what they charged (after giving me a discount for paying in cash). They said the tooth had small cracks in it and they weren't sure that it would crack more, but it was possible. They told me that they thought a crown, destroying much of the tooth could be done if I wanted that but that they would recommend a filling and porcelain overlay instead which would preserve more of the tooth. I agreed. They took out the 50 year old filling and found some decay which they cleaned They also said there was still some discoloring. If they did the most conservative treatment they would take that out as well, but that would likely expose the root and require a root canal. The discolored area was hard and they thought it was just the tooth reaction and that there was less than five percent chance that it would decay further. They put something in to deter further decay. A root canal would have taken two days more and $300 more. They treated me in two hours with initial exam and advice and then exposing and temporarily filling the hole in the molar and then the next day took out a temporary filling and put in the porcelain and overlay in another two hours. The novacane stopped any pain the first day and there was fairly minor pain putting the new filling in since there was no anesthetic the second day (sensibly - the pain was very brief and not very substantial). They had color options for the molar to match my other teeth. They measured the overlay and filling need by optical reader and produced it in their office. It did need some adjustment - cutting it back to permit flossing of neighboring teeth and reducing the height slightly. They asked me to come back to ensure it was fine - and it was - and they didn't charge any more money. I am not an expert on teeth, but it seemed to me they did an excellent job, with excellent modern equipment and giving me options and not trying to increase the cost with treatment that I might not have wanted or needed. The clinic • • The clinic has a number of dentists, some of whom speak English. They have modern equipment including computerized scanning of the tooth to be fixed and production within their office of the needed crown or in my case porcelain filling and overlay. • • • There were a several Americans that I saw visiting the practice and some Peruvians. But they seemed to have flexibility on making a new appointment at the time I wanted the second day and a few days later. A Peruvian told me that it could be done cheaper, but she had to go back numerous times for an infected molar to her cllnic before being treated under the national insurance, so I was glad not to use them. Given my limited time and their highly professional operation, I was very pleased with the treatment and the cost. Another Peruvian clinic reviewed by "what clinic" quoted me a substantially higher price and was less convenient. • • I have no complaints whatsoever but given my lack of expertise in teeth and processes, I rated them excellent rather than something higher.

My tooth was saved

A few days ago, I visited Smiles Peru to have them evaluate a molar that I had been told was cracked and it would have to be extracted. Upon looking at the X-ray taken on site, Dr. Sylvia said that there was a shadow under the filling of the tooth, but there was not a crack. The shadow turned out to be a big cavity. It was immediately removed, and then it was necessary to do a root canal. My roots were hooked, but this staff stayed with the procedure and successfully treated that tooth. My tooth was saved and a porcelain inlay was put into place the same day. I am so impressed by the professionalism of this staff, the quality of their work and certainly their perseverance in dealing with a difficult situation until they succeeded. I felt so special and truly felt that clients and their satisfaction is the goal of Smiles Peru. This clinic was so pristine clean. The waiting area was more than adequate, and time spent there, was minimal. The dental area was sparkling white, and the staff made sure that you were very comfortable in the chair. I really like the dominance of the white and silver decor. It made you feel like you were in a very sanitary place, where your comfort and care were primary. I will return to Smiles Peru again for any future dental work I may need. It was as pleasant of an experience that I could have asked for in any dental office. The staff was professional and caring.

My teeth look straight and white with veneers

I came to Smiles Peru to get veneers on both my upper and lower teeth. I am very pleased with the outcome. My teeth look straight, white, and my husband says it has taken ten years off my life. The only thing I wish I did different was come ten years earlier. Making the decision to have dental work done at Smiles Peru was the best decision of my life. The doctors at Smiles Peru are warm, professional, and very caring. In just a few days, I received a whole new smile which has helped a lot with my confidence. You will think that you will come to Smiles Peru because of the unbeatable prices but you will learn that its the staff that makes it even more rewarding (something that you just can’t put a price on).

You are welcome Janice and thank you very much for taking the time to write your review.

I can genuinely say it was probably the most comfortable experience I have had in a dentist's chair.

Teeth Cleaning Fillings Just had my annual checkup and clean, followed up by a filling. They have also informed me that aside from 1 or 2 other cavities which could do with attention, there are more fillings that can be done according to the prevailing school of thought around here which seeks to deal with lesser/minor cavities earlier, but they will be dealt with in subsequent visits. I particularly appreciated the explanation of why i suddenly have so many cavities requiring attention, and that they can be viewed as optional/not urgent. I chose this clinic because of the reviews i saw on this site, and it is only 3 blocks away from my flat. I can genuinely say it was probably the most comfortable experience I have had in a dentist's chair. I have no basis to compare prices with as this is the first dentist I have tried in Peru, but considering how comfortable and professional the experience was, I think the prices seem fair. A special mention goes out to how delicate the cleaning was done. Up until now I believed that dentists were supposed to use a lot of force to clean teeth, but now I know that is not the case! The polishing of the filling was also done to a much better standard than the last time I remember having one, leaving me with a perfectly fitting jaw and absolutely no noticeable change in jaw alignment.

I was most impressed

I had a full mouth restoration last year. My original intention was to get an implant for a missing tooth. The U.S. estimate was near $5000 of which insurance would cover $1200. When I visited SmilePeru, the dentists demonstrated how I would benefit from more extensive work, and I saw how many of my previous dental complaints were related to the conditions described by the SmilesPeru team. I had the work done in stages. They have spared no expense in acquiring the most up to date technology. Part of the treatment included Zoom Whitening which went exactly as was explained to me. The entire process resulted in a huge improvement in my appearance. I was impressed by the courtesy, professionalism of the staff, and quality of the work. I have a lot of confidence in this dentist and on a subsequent trip I even took my wife in for a Zoom Whitening with splendid results. As we age our teeth yellow and it is remarkable how effective Zoom Whitening is. Finally, I was most impressed by the amount of money I saved having the work done at Smiles Peru. Miraflores in Lima is a superb location, safe, modern, and a great introduction to South America.

Very, very impressed!!

Porcelain Inlays Exceeded my expectations! Went there for 2 crowns, but unlike the protocol in Canada, the dentist would not put crowns over permanent fillings as they would not last. It was explained to me that to do this properly it would require much more invasive work and cost than I planned. She recommended that I change my fillings to porcelain inlays, which would last much longer and save my tooth. The cost was $640 USD plus 150s for the consultation. No comparison to home and the work was incredible. State of the art everything!! I would return to Lima just for quality dental work. Very, very impressed!!

Thank you very much for the kind words Kim. Safe travels from the staff at Smiles Peru.

Root canals; porcelain crowns The staff were friendly, helpful and entirely professional. I had two root canals (one fixing a bad job my own UK dentist had done) followed by insertion of posts and porcelain crown and inlay They worked until midnight to get it all done because I had a flight out early the next morning. I was impressed with their knowledge and the fact that they have specialists to do different jobs to ensure the best work possible. The price was extremely good and far cheaper than it would have been in the US or UK. This is the place to go for dentist work if you are in Lima - or even worth a detour if you are elsewhere in Peru. Fantastic.

Thank you Portia. It was a pleasure meeting you. Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Looks and works great

I needed to have a bridge completed and had a limited amount of time. I was quoted high prices at home in the States, and could not get the work completed as fast as I wanted it. After hearing from a friend that he has dental work completed in Peru, I did some research on the internet and contacted Smiles Peru. They were very helpful, and I was promised I could get what I needed done within a few hours and for a much lower price than what I would pay at home. I flew to Lima, arriving in the late evening. I arrived at the clinic at 9am, and my bridge was completed and fitted by around noon. I used the rest of the day to visit tourist attractions in Miraflores. Smiles Peru even allowed me to use their apartment space in the same building to leave my things and relax during the day while I waited for my flight. I flew home about 24 hours after arriving, complete with my new temporary bridge, which looks and works great. Thanks Smiles Peru!

Dental work abroad? Yes, you read that right! It’s a great option if the cost of dental work is too high in the US, UK, or Australia. Continue reading for more details.

Dental tourism has become a popular way for millions of people to combine dental treatment with a holiday.

Best of all, you’ll save huge amounts of money on all types of dental services especially higher-cost treatments such as dental implants, crowns, and even veneers.

Read this article to find out what to consider while choosing dental work abroad.

Popular Dental Tourism Destinations

Your next dental vacation spot

Should i travel abroad for dental work.

The primary reasons to travel abroad for dental work are high treatment costs and lack of insurance coverage in the US,UK, or Australia.

You can save up to 70 – 80% at a dentist overseas.

But keep in mind, that higher amounts of savings are only possible on extensive restorative and cosmetic dental work.

Along with savings, it is crucial to consider two other factors: additional costs and safety .

Therefore, while planning a dental tourism trip, thorough research is essential.

As a dental tourist, your additional costs may include air travel cost, travel & stay in the city, and cost of time away from work & home.

As a dental patient, things to consider are the experience of the dentists, the reputation of the clinic, safety protocols followed, and the quality of materials used.

When planning a dental trip abroad, keep the following factors in mind:

✓ Applicable ✗ Not Applicable 🤔 Depends

Mexico, India, Costa Rica, Thailand, the Philippines, Hungary, Colombia, Turkey, and Poland are the most popular destinations for dental tourists.

They offer affordable and quality care to patients.

Also, because recovery time—even for complex dental procedures—is relatively short , patients can spend the remaining time enjoying a vacation .

Why Is Dental Work Cheap Abroad?

You may be wondering why dental work is so cheap abroad.

Low salaries, low student debts, low cost of living, and lower real estate prices are some reasons.

However, it is important to realize that cheap does not mean low quality.

On the contrary, reputable dental clinics in these countries use globally renowned brands and maintain the highest safety standards.

They meet and often exceed international standards .

Below are a few detailed reasons for low-cost dental work abroad:

Mexican Town Is A Destination For Dental Tourism

'Dentistry is cheap here for some obvious reasons — inexpensive labor and real estate.'

The low cost of living in other countries leads to lower treatment costs.

Dental Tourism

'There’s also a glut of dentists, keeping their salaries low, and many don’t use dental assistants.'

As a result, they don’t charge as much for the same procedures.

Dentists in the US spend more than 5,000 – 20,000 USD annually on malpractice insurance.

Medical Tourism

'Malpractice litigation costs are also lower in other countries than in the United States…'

In countries like Mexico, the government subsidizes dentists’ education. So, dentists do not graduate with huge debts.

Dentists share student debt stories

What Is the Quality of Dental Care Overseas?

Dental tourism is an excellent prospect for those who lack insurance or whose insurance does not cover a certain procedure.

With that said, not all dental clinics deliver quality care. Therefore, you must exercise caution when selecting a clinic.

Many dental clinics overseas are recognized by national associations . This indicates high standards of dental care and patient safety .

Additionally, it is vital to choose a dentist who has received formal education to obtain a dental degree.

Look for one with international training and a good amount of experience for added safety.

How to find a reputable dentist abroad.

If you are looking for a dentist who offers quality dental treatment at an affordable price, below are some of the tips to get you started:

Work with a Reputed Dental Tourism Company

Contact a reputed dental tourism company for a better experience. Below are some of the advantages of working with a reputed organization:

  • They maintain a repository of the best dental clinics in the selected location.
  • Treatments are customized for each patient.
  • They assist with customized travel packages , saving time and effort.
  • Connection with reliable partners lowers the risk of getting duped.
  • They have a local network on the ground, who ensure your needs are met and manage any unforeseen problems that may arise.
  • They are flexible when plans require change or modification.

Working with a dental tourism company, therefore, saves you money while making your trip a safe & hassle-free experience.

Decide on a Location

Decide on a location for dental treatment abroad. Prioritize if you are looking only for dental work or you’d like to combine it with a vacation.

Choosing a location near home saves on travel time and cost.

But for the adventurous, traveling to an exotic location could be an exciting and unique experience.

Framing Medical Tourism

'When choosing a medical provider, the accreditation or certified skill level of the provider or facility should be a major concern for foreign patients.'

  • Pay attention to the qualifications of the dentist.
  • Verify the dentists and dental clinic registration
  • Look for the experience and specialization of the dentist.
  • Check if dental clinics are certified by national and international bodies.
  • Look for patients’ testimonials on the clinics’ websites to understand levels of satisfaction and quality of care.
  • Take feedback from patients who underwent similar treatment at the clinic.

Obtain Virtual Consultation

Once you decide on a dental tourism company, let them know your needs. Obtain a virtual consultation with the in-house dentist in the country of choice.

Discuss your needs and share the relevant X-rays and reports of the previous check-ups.

During the consultation, you can discuss the following details:

  • Preferred language of communication
  • Experience of the dentist
  • Sterilization & Safety protocols followed
  • Quality of materials to be used
  • Number of days required for the procedure
  • Success and failure rate
  • Risks of developing post-treatment complications
  • Retreatment options (only if needed)
  • Treatment guarantees
  • Methods of payment
  • Sharing of treatment records before and after the procedure

Make a Final Decision

After gathering all the relevant information, analyze the details. Assess what works best for you, make an informed decision, and choose a dentist abroad.

Stay Near the Clinic

It is recommended patients book a hotel near the clinic.

This is one of the reasons working with an agency is essential: they can recommend nearby hotels for the convenience of visiting the dental clinic, especially when undergoing complex dental treatments such as full mouth reconstruction or an All On 4.

Often, when patients book a hotel on their own, they do not consider the travel time and traffic required to travel to each clinic.

This is another great reason to work with a knowledgeable and experienced dental agency that is familiar with different hotels near the clinic.

Don't have dental insurance? We got your back!

Red flags when choosing a foreign dental clinic.

Choosing the right dental clinic abroad requires in-depth research. During which you may come across red flags.

Here is what you should watch out for:

While searching online, verify the authenticity of dental tourism agencies.

Check for the credentials of your shortlisted dental clinics and dentists.

Many buy fake reviews to look real. Carefully assess patients’ reviews to determine if they are real or fake.

Try to contact these patients personally and ask about their experiences.

Dental tourism companies may try to entice you with heavy discounts to get you in the door.

For example, they might assure you of cheap flights, cheap dental procedures, and attractive exchange rates.

If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

A reputable clinic will provide you with a tentative treatment plan with precise pricing.

If a dentist or clinic seems reluctant to do so, they may not be trustworthy.

Clinics following sterilization protocols of international standards give assurance of quality care.

Enquire about them over a virtual consultation. Proceed further only if you are satisfied with what you’re told.

Advanced dental technology provides a faster , less painful , and more comfortable experience.

The use of old technology indicates a lack of funding, resources, and ultimately a lower standard of care.

It’s better to know about the state-of-the-art technology in dental clinics before deciding further.

Look for dentists who are willing to provide treatment plans as per your requirements .

Sometimes, dentists may add additional procedures for extra bucks.

Your dental records contain information about past diagnoses, treatment plans, and procedures.

If the dentist abroad doesn’t ask for these records they are missing out on important information relevant to previous treatments.

Follow-up visits are an essential component of successful treatment.

Check with your dentist if they have provisions for follow-ups for overseas patients.

What Are the Effective Measures To Take After Treatment?

Mouth Healthy

'Continuity of care is important and should be a consideration when making treatment decisions.'

Post Treatment Complications

After care & follow-up.

Before initiating any treatment abroad, ask if you can get follow-up care in your home country.

Some treatments, especially dental implants, require regular maintenance with your local dentist.

There are over 200 different implant systems.

To avoid any confusion, ask your dentist abroad to provide you with a record of the dental implant used.

The record contains information such as the name of the implant, the serial number as well as the specific size and dimension .

You can also request that your overseas dentist use dental implant brands that are available in your home country.

What To do if You Face Problems with Your Treatment?

Even though most patients have successful treatments when visiting a dentist abroad, a few can face problems as well.

Dentistry is not an exact science, and no matter in which country the treatment is performed, a certain number of dental procedures can fail.

If you are still within the country

  • Contact your dental tourism agent and inform them of the problem
  • Visit the dentist and tell them of the problem you are facing

If you have already returned to the US, UK, or Australia

  • Contact the clinic, explain the situation and see if they have a local dentist, they can refer you to for an evaluation.
  • Consider returning to the clinic.

How To Pay for Your Dental Vacation?

You can pay for your dental vacation abroad through cash, credit/debit card, cheque, PayPal, or bank transfer .

You can also finance your dental trip through various dental loan options.

However, note that payment policies vary with each clinic. Remember to check with your dentist regarding your chosen payment option.

Read more about the payment options below with which you can save plenty on out-of-pocket expenses.

Dental Insurance

Traditional travel insurance policies do not cover the expenses incurred for a dental vacation.

'Insurance products have also emerged that go beyond ensuring travel and loss, and which seek to cover the costs of further treatments.'

  • Cost of additional treatment in case of complications.
  • Cost of treatment if you are dissatisfied with post-treatment abroad.
  • Follow-up fees of local dentists for continuity of care.

Dental Treatment in Peru – Costs and Options

dental tourism peru

Quality dental treatments in Peru are more accessible than North America, even when being seen in a top-rated clinic, but just how much can you save? Firstly, if you are considering taking dental treatments in Peru, it is important to consider several important deciding factors: 1. Cost estimate of each procedure 2. Time in the chair per day 3. Total time needed to stay in Peru 4. Flight & accommodation expenses While no costs are set in stone, some factors to consider which determine the cost of dental procedures are, amongst others, (i) geographical location, (ii) the skill and experience of the doctor, (iii) the technology used in the clinic, (iv) the complexity of your treatment and (v) the amount of time required by the doctor. One of the most sought after procedures is the dental implant, These are used to replace missing teeth which in many parts of North America can run into a few thousand dollars per implant. Multiply that by five or six in case of multiple missing teeth and you’re looking at big numbers. Another example are dental crowns. One such restoration can reach US$1000-1500 in the USA and take several days, or even weeks for the procedure to be complete, including several visits to the dentist.

dental tourism peru

With the latest advances in 3D CAD CAM technology, patients are now getting one-day crowns and restorations in Lima at less than 50% of the cost for a similar treatment in North America. We say ‘similar’ because many American dentists have not upgraded to the one-day system of CAD CAM metal-free restorations and instead still take uncomfortable impressions which are sent out to an external lab. These labs use an alloy-metal base for crowns and cover it in a porcelain cap. For this reason, dark lines can sometimes be seen around the gums of the restoration due to the metal-alloy filtrating in to the body. This is not the case with CAD CAM restorations as treatment finishes on just one appointment and all restorations are metal free, being made from pure ceramic blocks. Another popular treatment which people pack their bags for and travel overseas is to replace old amalgam fillings with ceramic restorations to restore strength, biting surface and contour to a tooth. Removing amalgam requires a special procedure to ensure the patient does not inhale or swallow any part of this old-style restoration.

In more recent years, people have begun to take much more interest in their overall health and now understand that metals, alloys and mercury (such as old amalgam fillings) have a negative effect on the human body. For reference, TalkInternational.com is one of the oldest and largest resources on the internet regarding mercury toxicity issues with a special focus on dental treatments and mercury free dentists throughout the world. In conclusion, patients that need major restorative dental treatments find a trip to Peru well worth their time and effort, with savings often reaching in to thousands of dollars. Those who need less treatments are also making the trip to Peru. However, this is often to combine lower cost dental treatments with a trip to visit Machu Picchu, the Amazon and other regions that are popular tourist attractions. Here is a price comparison chart that shows approximate costs for some dental treatments:

Dentistry in Peru

Peru can offer world class dentistry at very competitive prices due to services, property and living costs being much lower in comparison to many other countries. In fact, dental treatment in Peru can cost as little as one third that of identical treatments in Europe and the United States.

There are 14 dental schools in Peru; four of these are in the public sector, and ten are private. A five to six-year dental training program leads to the B.D.S. degree. After successful completion of a thesis or competency examination, the D.D.S. degree is awarded. The D.D.S. is mandatory for practising dentistry in Peru.

There are around 14,000 qualified dentists in Peru.

Dental treatment in Peru can be combined with tourism. Peru is the only country on the South American continent that can boast three geographical regions; coastal desert, the highlands of the Andes Mountains and also the Amazon jungle. It is this challenging geography that has given Peru its varied legacy of ethnic cultures, foods, music and folklore.

Lima, Peru's capital, is a sprawling metropolis on the coastal desert of Peru that has seen huge investments in development in recent years. The coastal desert of Peru is one of the driest in the world and Lima is lined with beaches, beautiful cliff-top parks and many cosy cafes.

Worth the Trip? A Look at Dental Tourism

  • by Elizabeth Newman
  • Jan 20, 2020

This is a Self-Instruction article worth 1 CE credit. The exercise can be purchased and answers submitted at agd.org/self-instruction .

With the constantly rising costs of healthcare, many Americans and Canadians are making difficult decisions about their health, including sometimes forgoing routine preventive care as a way to save money. This includes dental care, which can result in patients requiring even more expensive and complicated emergency care down the road.

One way that many Americans and Canadians are choosing to save money on costly dental treatments is by traveling abroad to have the work done for less. Medical and dental tourism — patients traveling to other countries for cheaper medical or dental care — has occurred throughout history, and today it’s as popular as ever. An entire industry revolves around connecting patients with care in other countries. However, patients should consider several important questions before taking a trip to a foreign country for any kind of dental treatment: Do the cost savings outweigh the risks of entrusting a dentist in another country with their oral health? What research should they perform to find the right dentist? And, for dentists who hear patients expressing interest in dental tourism, what advice can they give to help ensure the best possible outcomes?

Why Seek Treatment Abroad?

Medical and dental tourists travel to other countries for a few reasons. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), some may be immigrants who wish to travel back to their home countries for care. Others travel because a certain procedure or treatment is not available in their country. Many others go for specific treatments because the costs are significantly less. The CDC reports that most patients travel to other countries seeking cosmetic/plastic surgery, dental care and heart surgery. 1

How much can patients really save? According to Patients Beyond Borders, a company that researches medical procedures in other countries in order to inform medical tourists, the top 10 destinations for dental tourism among U.S. patients are Mexico, Thailand, Hungary, Spain, Poland, Costa Rica, the Philippines, Malaysia, Turkey and the Czech Republic. U.S. patients can expect to save 40%–65% in Mexico, 45%–65% in Costa Rica, and 50%–75% in Thailand. 2 Average costs for several common procedures in each of the top 10 dental tourism destinations are illustrated below.

Average Price of Common Dental Procedures

How is it possible for patients to save so much in these countries? In a country like Mexico, the cost of living is significantly less compared with the United States and Canada, making it much more feasible for dentists to own and operate a practice. In addition, dentists in Mexico are not required to pay for malpractice insurance. Mexican dentists also carry less student loan debt than U.S. dentists due to government subsidies. They repay these subsidies with one year of free service after school. 3

Many patients combine dental care with a vacation. News media is filled with testimonials from patients who saved thousands of dollars by seeking dental care in another country while on vacation. A Washington Post reporter chronicled his experience having five crowns replaced in Costa Rica.

“It would take a few days to make the crowns, so my wife and I took a short flight to the Drake Bay area, where we snorkeled, swam and poked around the mangroves,” wrote the reporter. 4 With airfare, accommodations, food and the dental work he received, his total trip cost around $4,000 — about $1,000 less than his out-of-pocket dental expenses alone would have been in the United States.

U.S. residents living near the U.S.-Mexico border — or those willing to drive there — can save even more by driving to Mexico rather than flying. The vast majority of these dental care seekers travel to one destination — the small town of Los Algodones.

The Allure of “Molar City”

Just on the other side of the Colorado River, about a 30-minute drive from Yuma, Arizona, the small Mexican town of Los Algodones bills itself as “Molar City.” The city only has around 5,000 permanent residents, but thousands of tourists flock to the city every year to take advantage of the approximately 350 dentists in the downtown area. 3 Some clinics even offer transportation to and from airports or other metropolitan areas. 5

Los Algodones’ economy was built around dental tourism. The large number of dental offices there also have access to the many dental labs in town, which means dental work is fast — and cheap. Prices are on average one-third the cost of their U.S. equivalents, and some patients report even lower prices. 3

While many people report successful dental procedures in Los Algodones, some have been not so pleasant. And, if patients return from Mexico and discover the work they received is subpar, they turn to local dentists to help.

Craig Barrows, DDS, is a general dentist practicing in Yuma. He says around 90,000 tourists travel to Yuma and stay during the winter months — many of them Canadian — and that many of these winter visitors also take advantage of Yuma’s proximity to Los Algodones. He’s seen his share of patients who were unhappy with the work they received there, and he says that U.S. patients who travel to Los Algodones get “completely taken advantage of.” He describes a patient who had $25,000 worth of implants placed in Los Algodones and came to him for follow-up care after realizing the implants were infected. None of the implants were guaranteed, significantly impacting the cost savings the patient initially anticipated by going to Mexico.

A Growing Trend

With the increasing popularity of dental tourism over the past 10 years, companies have been created to research and plan trips for medical tourists. Companies like Patients Beyond Borders and Dental Departures connect patients to international healthcare providers through marketing services.

According to its website, Patients Beyond Borders is a resource for patients and healthcare professionals. Founder and CEO Josef Woodman states that he has spent more than a decade “researching and vetting international options for quality, affordable medical care,” which also includes dental care. 2

Potential medical tourists can consult with companies like Patients Beyond Borders to select reputable clinics. Some of the criteria the company uses to vet healthcare sites include:

  • Being accredited by a reliable, globally recognized accreditation organization.
  • Being in good legal standing.
  • Having a website in English.
  • Listing key physicians on its website.
  • Having identifiable services offered to patients. 2

Another factor to consider is insurance. Some insurance companies, including GeoBlue (which is affiliated with Blue Cross Blue Shield), Aetna and Cigna, offer specific medical and dental coverage for people who are traveling outside of the United States. 6–8 Doing so saves insurance companies money because they’re paying out much less than they would for these procedures in the United States. Some employers have even gone a step further and will cover entire medical tourism trips for employees. 9

Barrows’ wife is a public school teacher. He says that Yuma city government workers and other public employees are made aware that their insurance covers medical and dental treatment in Los Algodones — his newest insurance card under his wife’s family policy specifically states that the policy is accepted in Mexico. Barrows says there are cons to this as well, and cites a new patient who presented to his office with pain after having amalgam fillings on almost all of her molars replaced with composite in Mexico. Upon the patient’s request, Barrows replaced all of the fillings to relieve her pain. However, problems arose later because the patient’s insurance had already covered the less expensive fillings placed in Mexico, so the claim for the fillings Barrows replaced was rejected, leaving the patient to pay cash.

Dental Tourism in Europe

Dental tourism is broader than just North America; people in other countries are also traveling for dental care. The practice is also common in Europe. Britons often travel to Hungary, Slovakia and Poland for lower prices. 10 Irish people go to India, the United Arab Emirates, Malta and Turkey. 11 Like Los Algodones, many European countries are publicizing their desire for patients from countries with higher costs of living. Both Poland and Croatia have spent millions developing public relations campaigns promoting their medical tourism. 12 It appears to be working — medical tourism in Europe has been growing 12%–15% annually. 13

U.S. citizens can also take advantage of these European markets. With a valid U.S. passport, patients can visit any country in Europe’s Schengen Area for a duration of up to 90 days without requiring a visa. 14 The Schengen Area includes three of the top 10 global dental tourism countries (Hungary, Spain and the Czech Republic). 15 While in Europe for dental treatment, U.S. dental tourists can also travel to other countries in the Schengen Area as part of a European vacation.

Within the European Union, a number of organizations are working to standardize the quality of dental education and care within the member countries in order to facilitate freedom of movement for healthcare professionals. 16 Currently, the Association for Dental Education in Europe promotes this mission in the education sector, and the Federation of European Dental Competent Authorities and Regulators promotes standardization within the clinical sector. 17,18 These efforts benefit all patients as the consistency of care increases, although U.S. patients should still anticipate regional and national differences in care. 16

Advice and Considerations for Dentists and Their Patients

Dentists may encounter patients who are interested in dental tourism. While they should not immediately discourage the idea, all dentists should insist on one central point: Do your research.

The CDC advises anyone seeking healthcare outside of the United States to do thorough research about medications, infection control and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. They should also investigate the standards by which facilities are measured in order to be accredited by organizations such as Joint Commission International, DNV GL International Accreditation for Hospitals and the International Society for Quality in Healthcare. 1 If something goes wrong, patients must also be aware of the options they have to obtain retreatment, manage posttreatment complications or pursue refunds and restitution. Some countries have ministries of health. Others have different forums for complaints.

Patients should stick to the facts and not be enticed by marketing. Mexican dentists, Barrows says, can advertise on their websites that they are U.S.–trained but may have taken only a two-day course in the United States, giving unknowing patients the false impression that these dentists received their dental degrees from U.S. dental schools. Patients may want to request providers’ résumés beforehand so they can evaluate educational backgrounds and experience. Because patients may be unfamiliar with the educational institutions in other countries, they may need to identify the organizations in each country that accredit dental schools in order to ensure they will receive the same level of care abroad.

Dentists also may want to advise patients to work with consultants like Patients Beyond Borders that do some of the legwork of screening providers. Websites such as WhatClinic.com provide client reviews of dentists in other countries. Patients may also want to investigate whether a dentist is a member of an international organized dental body. If patients are interested in esthetic procedures, for example, they may want to look at dentist listings in the International Federation of Esthetic Dentistry or, if visiting a European country, the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. Many U.S. organizations like the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry also accept international members. 19,20

Teeth Whitening

A bright white smile makes you look younger and healthier. but teeth can stain from food and drinks such as coffee and red wine or from smoking..

We offer Zoom professional whitening and at our clinic in Miraflores or San Isidro, Lima and both are very effective and painless. The method we use, your new whitened smile will make you look great!

Treatment is performed by a Dentist with all standards of the Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) – Dr Lilian Demartini , our Principal Cosmetic Dentist is a Member of the AACD.

How treatment is performed,  zoom professional philips – in clinic.

We apply a light sensitive whitening gel to the teeth that are being whitened. The whitening gel that we use is a very powerful whitening agent that is only for use by dentists. It contains a buffer agent that does not cause damage to the tooth enamel.

We apply another gel to the gums to protect them. We use a high intensity light as in the photo above to activate the gel.

The treatment can last up to an hour depending on the results you want to achieve.

The treatment is painless.

Some sensitivity in the teeth can be felt afterwards, so we recommend that you don’t drink anything hot or cold the rest of that day.

Also, you have to avoid colored foods such as curries and drinks such as black coffee for a week following the treatment.

Laser teeth whitening can whiten your teeth by up to 10 shades in one hour and the whiteness can last for up to 2 years.

It can also be topped up every six months with short 30 minute sessions.

No, both Zoom Professional Treatment  and Home Teeth Whitening Kits in particular, are inexpensive ways of restoring your smile so that you look healthier and younger.

Some sensitivity in the teeth can be felt after the treatment and we recommend that you don’t drink anything hot or cold for 1 day after whitening your teeth.

We do recommend that you only whiten your teeth once every six months to avoid causing sensitivity in the teeth.

Treatment can whiten your teeth by up to 10 shades and the whiteness can last for up to 2 years depending on how you take care of your teeth.

Warning: We do not recommend that you use over the counter kits that you sometimes can buy at pharmacies.

They will not be custom made and therefore will not fit your teeth properly. The gel may leak and burn the gums. They can also cause sensitivity in the teeth.

We also recommend that you do not use abrasive teeth whitening toothpastes as these can cause irreversible damage to tooth enamel.

Dentist supervised teeth whitening is the safest and most effective way to brighten your smile.
