Pat Metheny Begins Extensive North American Dream Box Tour Sep 13, Featuring Music From All His Solo Recordings

August 19, 2023 Lyle Robinson News 0

pat metheny group tour 2023

(August 2023 – Press Release) — After a globe-trotting 33-stop tour this past spring and summer with his Side-Eye band, legendary American guitarist, composer and improviser Pat Metheny takes to the road again, this time as a solo act, beginning on September 13 in Homer, NY.

With currently scheduled coast-to-coast performances in 51 venues across 29 states and more to be added in March and April 2024, by the end of the Dream Box tour in 2024 Metheny will have given at least 76 performances of the program in the United States. The tour gives him the chance to explore his approach to being a solo performer in both traditional and unorthodox ways in the kinds of intimate venues that will offer audiences an absolutely unique concert experience:

“I’m really looking forward to doing this pretty significant tour that will just be me. I’m going to draw on all my solo records, from New Chautauqua on, and I’ve written a lot of that kind of material: narrative, storytelling, with expositional-type improvising. I did a test run of solo concerts a couple years ago and I really, really enjoyed it. It’s going to be something quite different for me, that intimate relationship. I think I’ll probably actually talk some on the gig, which I generally don’t like to do, but it sort of fits with what this evening will be.” Pat Metheny

Metheny has produced a catalog of recordings that, measured in terms of influence, is in a class by itself: 50 recordings that have won 20 Grammys in twelve different categories. New Chautauqua (1979) almost single-handedly defined an era of instrumental steel-stringed Americana that spawned legions of imitators. Zero Tolerance for Silence pushed the boundaries of modern music-making once again and served as a companion piece to the Grammy-winning disc Secret Story. The Orchestrion Project – for which Metheny wrote the music and built a series of instruments to be controlled by his guitar, recording the results both in the studio and in a live concert – was so new in conception and execution that even a decade-plus later, it still stands apart from any previous ideas of what a solo performer might achieve alone onstage.

Alongside those projects was yet another stream of development: two back-to-back, Grammy-winning solo baritone guitar recordings: One Quiet Night and What’s It All About , the predecessors to Dream Box . Not only do they shine as pure solo guitar recordings, but they also introduced an entirely new tuning system that allowed Metheny to create an almost orchestral range, from bass to soprano, within the realm of a simple steel six-string guitar.

Jazz Concert Review: PAT METHENY (Dream Box Tour at Royce Hall, UCLA)

PAT ON THE BACK

When one thinks of the always-inventive and distinctive guitarist Pat Metheny , it is generally of the great bands he has had (including the Pat Metheny Group with the late Lyle Mays on keyboards and the Unity Band with Chris Potter), his recordings with bassist Charlie Haden and guitarist John Scofield, and of his appearances with all-star groups. But when he appeared at Royce Hall for a 2 ½ hour set, it was quite a bit different.

pat metheny group tour 2023

Pat Metheny was the only musician onstage. While there were times when he used electrical devices that allowed him to spontaneously create parts that he soloed over, it was essentially a colorful one-man show. It is to his great credit that he never lost the audience’s attention.

pat metheny group tour 2023

Metheny started off with a medley of his compositions on acoustic guitar which he played at a relaxed and thoughtful tempo. He remembered Haden and the Beyond The Missouri duet album that they made together by playing a medley of tunes from the intimate project (including the bassist’s “First Song”). A brief departure from the quiet music took place when he suddenly switched to a thunderous free-form piece but then things calmed down when he played an orchestral number on his 42-string Picasso guitar. He performed a medley of mostly standards on the baritone guitar (including “Alfie,” “Rainy Days and Mondays” and “The Girl from Ipanema”), and then he jammed on a medium-tempo blues, adding other instruments including a rhythm guitar and a walking bass. Quite intriguing was the guitarist’s work with his Orchestrion, magically creating his own orchestra.

pat metheny group tour 2023

While Pat Metheny rarely speaks on stage, the night at Royce Hall was an exception. During the first half of the evening he talked quite a bit including about his early days, his period with Gary Burton, his memories of Charlie Haden, and the different guitars that he uses. I wish that he had continued talking during the second half for he did not say anything about his band with Lyle Mays or any of a dozen other interesting topics, but it was nice to hear him reminisce a bit.

Pat Metheny can always be relied upon to put on stimulating, virtuosic and surprising shows. That has been true of his performances during the past 50 years and it was certainly true of his solo night at Royce Hall.

Pat Metheny

Pat Metheny was born in Kansas City on August 12, 1954 into a musical family. Starting on trumpet at the age of 8, Metheny switched to guitar at age 12. By the age of 15, he was working regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City, receiving valuable on-the-bandstand experience at an unusually young age. Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over the course of his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton, the young Missouri native already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style, which blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility - a way of playing and improvising that was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody, swing, and the blues. With the release of his first album, Bright Size Life (1975), he reinvented the traditional "jazz guitar" sound for a new generation of players.

Throughout his career, Pat Metheny has continued to re-define the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument. Metheny's versatility is almost nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. He has been part of a writing team with keyboardist Lyle Mays for more than twenty years - an association that has been compared to the Lennon/McCartney and Ellington/Strayhorn partnerships by critics and listeners alike. Metheny's body of work includes compositions for solo guitar, small ensembles, electric and acoustic instruments, large orchestras, and ballet pieces, with settings ranging from modern jazz to rock to classical.

As well as being an accomplished musician, Metheny has also participated in the academic arena as a music educator. At 18, he was the youngest teacher ever at the University of Miami. At 19, he became the youngest teacher ever at the Berklee College of Music, where he also received an honorary doctorate more than twenty years later (1996). He has also taught music workshops all over the world, from the Dutch Royal Conservatory to the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz to clinics in Asia and South America. He has also been a true musical pioneer in the realm of electronic music, and was one of the very first jazz musicians to treat the synthesizer as a serious musical instrument. Years before the invention of MIDI technology, Metheny was using the Synclavier as a composing tool. He also been instrumental in the development of several new kinds of guitars such as the soprano acoustic guitar, the 42-string Pikasso guitar, Ibanez's PM-100 jazz guitar, and a variety of other custom instruments.

It is one thing to attain popularity as a musician, but it is another to receive the kind of acclaim Metheny has garnered from critics and peers. Over the years, Metheny has won countless polls as "Best Jazz Guitarist" and awards, including three gold records for (Still Life) Talking, Letter from Home, and Secret Story. He has also won 17 Grammy Awards spread out over a variety of different categories including Best Rock Instrumental, Best Contemporary Jazz Recording, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, Best Instrumental Composition. The Pat Metheny Group won an unprecedented seven consecutive Grammies for seven consecutive albums.

Metheny has spent most of his life on tour, averaging between 120-240 shows a year since 1974. At the time of this writing, he continues to be one of the brightest stars of the jazz community, dedicating time to both his own projects and those of emerging artists and established veterans alike, helping them to reach their audience as well as realizing their own artistic visions.

pat metheny group tour 2023

Playing for the first time in the Muriel Kauffman Theatre, a surprisingly intimate 1,800-person room that opened, along with the rest of the performing arts center in which it’s housed, in 2011, Pat Metheny had a space ideally suited for his famously buttery tone. The surroundings were mildly opulent without being fussy, boasted a capacious stage for Metheny’s impressive wealth of keyboards, guitars and homemade instruments (more on those later) and, most importantly, pristine acoustics that allowed the nearly full house to hear the nuances of every note with razor-sharp clarity.

And about that tone; while Metheny’s many excellent albums capture his exuberant skill, eclectic influences and complex moods, they don’t, it turns out, do justice to the way his guitar actually sounds. Limpid and silky, it can often seem sanded down — “too smooth,” as many detractors argue — in the studio, overly processed both in the sonic and the culinary sense. Live, it’s a different story, that smoothness showing all sorts of precisely defined, oddly contoured and unexpected edges, while Metheny’s elastic fervor — which can read as cheese to the uninitiated — fills a room with a boundlessly confident, even forceful authority.

Metheny began the show solo, playing a custom-built monster of a harp/guitar called the “Pikasso,” presumably because its multiple necks, two sound holes and wealth of criss-crossing strings make it resemble a Cubist painting (or an AI-generated image that went overboard). Though it may resemble an imaginary instrument, Metheny made it sound very real, turning the empyreal “Into the Dream,” from 1997’s Imaginary Day , into an extended polyphonic meditation and a cosmic hoedown, at one point knocking on its vast body and later triggering a sampled bass line through some sort of mysterious technological wizardry (possibly a Synclavier setup.)

After demonstrating that one man can sound like a full band with the right tools, the current iteration of the Side-Eye group, formed by Metheny to highlight younger up-and-coming jazz musicians, walked on stage: drummer Joe Dyson and organ/keyboard player Chris Fishman. Both seemed a bit slow to settle in as Metheny took them through a bouncy run-through of “So May It Secretly Begin,” from the 1987 classic Still Life (Talking) . Dyson initially underplayed on the drums, sticking to rapid, close work on cymbals and snares, and Fishman appeared slightly nervous about keeping up with Metheny’s characteristic ebullience. But by the time the trio took “Bright Size Life,” the opening song from Metheny’s 1976 debut album of the same name – still perhaps the maestro’s snappiest and most recognizable riff – through its paces, everything started to click.

Metheny gave his bandmates plenty of opportunity to strut their stuff, letting each take long solos (at one point even leaving the stage) and duetting with both – with Fishman on a sparkling and intent “Phase Dance,” from the Pat Metheny Group’s self-titled 1978 debut album, and with Dyson on an extremely unexpected and jaw-dropping free/noise number. Metheny has always had an avant-garde, non-smooth side – he recorded albums with Ornette Coleman and Derek Bailey, and, of course, made the infamous straight solo noise record Zero Tolerance for Silence, but it was surprising to see him acknowledge that aspect of his career in front of a mostly older, presumably more risk-averse paying audience. It was even more shocking to see the chaos emerge after a dazzling polyrhythmic solo from Dyson on tambourine and kick pedals, and from a (possibly fretless) amplified and overdriven acoustic guitar. Beginning with free shards of distortion, it gradually became earthier and more skronky – sounding most like “Trigonometry” from the Ornette record at first and later like “Broadway Blues,” the closing track of the Pat Metheny Group debut, but it was also not impossible to hear quotes from Zero Tolerance, and maybe even “The Calling,” from the underrated 1984 album with Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins, Rejoicing . The crowd, though not moved to a standing ovation as it was for several other tracks, was nonetheless admirably appreciative, and Metheny seemed especially exhilarated afterward.

The longest and most impressive song of the evening was also the only one that began a little shakily. The Side-Eye original “It Starts When We Disappear,” makes use of a sampled, almost techno-like percussion track, and this version also utilized Metheny’s self-playing, solenoid-triggered musical instruments/sculptures from the Orchestrion album. Initially, possibly because of hurdles with the whimsical electronics, Metheny’s laserlike focus (his head almost never stops nodding as he plays) seemed to falter. The problems must have resolved themselves, though, as Metheny found his footing and the band followed suit with a burst of energy. The music transformed several times, from Metheny’s trademark rapid-fire razzle-dazzle to warmly assertive organ noodling to space-age retro-futurist pyrotechnics.

While fans of Metheny’s unstoppable power noodling and searing yet gooey guitar-synth acrobatics were given plenty to chew on, he also dipped into his quieter material. A down-tempo, at times halting version of “Better Days Ahead,” originally a breezy, tropicalia-infused jaunt from 1989’s Letter From Home , gave Fishman his first chance to shine, and allowed Metheny to display his nearly superhuman control of rhythmic dynamics. “Farmer’s Trust” demonstrated another side to Metheny: lyrical and romantic — if not simple, at least uncomplicated. When combined with the theater’s elegant lighting effects, the song had an intense poignancy and an emotional heft that captivated the room.

Except to express thanks every now and then and to praise his band members, Metheny didn’t address the audience or give any indication that this was a hometown show. He also didn’t play any of his numerous songs with local names: “Missouri Uncompromised,” “Lone Jack” or, most disappointingly, the epic “As Wichita Falls, So Falls Wichita Falls,” to name a few. But by the time he played the legendarily smooth groover “Last Train Home” (which the Florida supermarket chain Publix made the centerpiece of a famously off-putting holiday commercial) as a solo acoustic number that activated the bittersweet longing usually hidden by digital moodscapes for the first of two encores, we knew we we’d seen something special, even if it had been just another night on tour for Metheny and his band. As Meth heads both old and newly minted went out underneath the wide Missouri sky, they went bearing new ways to listen, carrying new sounds to hear in their heads.

Solid review. Having seen Pat many times over the years, I travelled quite a bit for this one! I’ve seen much better from him and slightly worse, but I’m very spoiled. It clicked, but didn’t sustain the energy that he typically can achieve on the bandstand. I feel like Fishman is settling in, but is still pretty new to the group. Joe goes back a couple of Side Eye tours now and is really starting to lock in. I noticed Pat was blowing his nose and actually left the stage for a bit mid set (I’ve never seen that), so maybe he was fighting off a cold or something.

I was very surprised, and honesty disappointed, he didn’t address the crowd and tie in the hometown show angle. Every show I’ve seen of his, he has addressed the crowd and almost always ties in something local or regional in regards to the venue or the city, etc. Not a peep for a KC show? Okay, Pat, we’re still good.

To reiterate, Pat, who is pushing 70, it still consummate musical and performing hero. He set an unbelievably high standard for himself as a musician and performer roughly 50 years ago and continues to hold and clear that high bar.

Highlight for me was “Farmer’s Trust”. Simply stunning, and to your point, the closest reference to the area (the song was named after a bank in the KC area).

Thank you for the review. I like to track the different reviews from around the world when Pat is touring. The problem with the Orchestrion set-up seems to be a recurring theme.

May I make one correction of a dong track. It is “As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls” and not “As Wichita Falls, So Falls Wichita Falls” as stated.

dammit, thanks, I own that on LP and have never once gotten the title/dad joke correct.

Pat Metheny has a legendary status within the jazz music scene. It not hard to see why considering he has 3 gold records and 20 grammy awards to his name. He has toured for more than 30 years and is believed to have played between 120 & 240 concerts in each of them. Quite an accomplishment! I was first introduced to Pat Metheny as a music student myself around 15 years ago. My professor at the time was a keen jazz enthusiast. I was not the biggest fan of Jazz to be honest but there was something beautiful about Methenys music.

I saw him play live during my own time at music school. It was a tiny set the hall was dark with red and purple lights shinning onto the stage. It was an unbelievable experience as the sheer level of musicianship on display was quite remarkable. I loved the sound of his guitar; it was so soulful and smooth, he has always been a fan of the Roland GR-300 Guitar Synthesizer and he used it regularly in his music. Often its hard to believe its actually a guitar he's playing. The gig was extremely calm, most of the audience listened, many with eyes closed and let the music take them on a journey.

It was a tranquil, calm and relaxing performance. However, Pat himself was always quite animated as he played. His face tensed and staunched up with the strike of every note. Clearly very involved in his performance.

Between each piece there was a respectful round of applause, and Pat himself spoke occasionally of the music and told the audience a little about the creation or inspiration behind each piece. This was a low key but beautiful performance by a gifted musician. If you truly want to experience world class jazz, I recommend for you to go see his show.

Long-time jazz guitarist and composer Pat Metheny — leader of the Pat Metheny Group for nearly a quarter century starting in the late 1970s — has released the album "Dream Box."

Metheny also launched a Dream Box tour featuring just him, his guitars and his many, many songs. He's won more than 20 Grammy Awards and released more than 50 albums.

Concert Review: Pat Metheny

pat metheny group tour 2023

Metheny’s doing a solo tour this time around. He did a solo tour not too long ago, in 2010. On that tour he was joined/accompanied by his then-new contraption, the Orchestrion, which automatically played multiple instruments, all under the command of Metheny. For his 2023 tour, Metheny entered the stage with just an acoustic guitar. He proceeded to spin musical tales from the 20 th Century, mostly Pat Metheny Group tunes including the hit, “This is Not America,” from the soundtrack to the movie, “The Falcon and the Snowman” which featured David Bowie on vocals.

After that introduction of music familiar to most PMG fans, Metheny stopped to chat with the crowd. He started by explaining that he hasn’t been very loquacious during his concerts in the past, but this time he wanted to tell the audience about how some of his past work came to be and reveal a little about how he plays the music he does and how he creates some of his sounds.

Another theme quickly emerged when he talked affectionately about his friend, the late bassist Charlie Haden whom Metheny called a “mentor.” They had crossed paths several times and worked together on occasion. Eventually, they decided they should record together. Because both artists hail from Missouri, the album was entitled Beyond the Missouri Sky (Verve, 1997). By the way, the natives apparently pronounce the name of the state as “Missour-uh.” What followed this introduction was a medley of tunes from that album, again performed on acoustic guitar.

Next up was a lively tune featuring some boisterous and energetic strumming. Metheny explained that he wrote that song quite a few years ago when his two sons were about ages 5 and 3. Like many parents, he was sometimes challenged to get the kids to bed on time. He composed the song so that the boys would dance around the house and then collapse from exhaustion, at which time it was off to bed. He called the tune, “Song for the Boys.”

He discussed another influence in his musical life, the guitarist John Scofield and mentioned how they recorded an album, I Can See Your House From Here (Blue Note, 1994). From that album, he played one of his compositions, “Message to My Friend.”

Then, just to make sure nobody got the impression that he’s all sweetness and soaring melodies, he jumped into several minutes of noise and loops on one of his acoustic guitars. That was followed by the introduction of one of several instruments he’s invented, in this case, the Pikasso guitar. This was also an opportunity to talk about another important person in his life, his guitar luthier, Linda Manzer. He worked with Manzer to create the dual-neck, 42 string guitar.

pat metheny group tour 2023

Manzer has made at least three baritone guitars for Metheney and pulled out one of those to play a medley of tunes from his solo album, What’s It All About , (Nonsuch, 2011). That was an album of pop tunes which won a Grammy in 2012 for Best New Age Album. Sunday night, some of the tunes in the medley included the title tune, “Alfie,” also “Rainy Days and Mondays.” He also threw in “Last Train Home” from the PMG album Still Live (Talking) (Geffen, 1987).

Next up, he strapped on a blonde hollow body electric guitar which may be the type of guitar he’s most associated with because he spent so much time behind that type of guitar with the Pat Metheny Group. In musician slang, an electric hollow body is known as a “box.” His current album is Dream Box (Modern Recordings, 2023) and includes tunes he’s come up with over the years, but then filed away for a rainy day. He mined that computer file and pulled the most compelling tracks and recorded them for the new album.

Although he didn’t introduce the songs for this part of the concert, much of the material for it was drawn from that album. At this point, he incorporated more loops to set up a background which allowed him to get out front and solo with single note runs which he does so often in an ensemble setting. During the “loops” portion of the show, he also strapped on his synth guitar, another instrument he has developed and goes back to the 1980s with the PMG.

As with many of his song structures, the concert itself slowly built to a climax. After a few loops tunes, he unveiled the 2023 version of the Orchestrion which had been waiting patiently in the back of the stage covered with black draperies. This version of the Orchestrion was much slimmed down from the original 2011 edition. This one focused primarily on percussion, leaving the chords and melodies to the human on the stage.

After a couple of Orchestrion numbers, Metheny then ran around the stage and unveiled three guitars that had been enshrouded and were placed on stands set about chest level. He set up a loop with each guitar, each of which had a different sound, of course. Then he strapped on another guitar and played a solo on top of the entire three-guitar and Orchestrion symphony. The climax!

The first encore included more Orchestrion and generally kept the climatic vibe going. The second encore, however, moved into ballad territory with Metheny back on a solo acoustic to close the show with a beautiful version of the poignant “Wichita Lineman.”

Theatres in Moscow

pat metheny group tour 2023

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

pat metheny group tour 2023

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

pat metheny group tour 2023

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it.
