  • Day Trip to Lapland with Newmarket Holidays

jo&fi

I was lucky enough to travel to Swedish Lapland with Newmarket Holidays for the day from Exeter. An early departure from the UK gave us about 5 hours to enjoy Santa's Village which was a 5-minute drive from Pajala and North of the Arctic Circle.

snowmobilingfiona

It is a stunning area, covered with soft white snow and temperatures that are unbelievable! Daylight hours for this time of the year are short and just adds to the wonderful feel of this place.

fionadogsledding

Thermal Suits and boots are provided on arrival plus we wore lots of layers to keep warm. There was a welcome hot lunch and warm soup and cinnamon rolls served later in the afternoon plus Hot berry juice to top us up!

lapland

Snowmobiling, Tobogganing, Husky & Reindeer rides are packed into this fun day out - and to top it all - a chance to meet with Santa Claus!

A great day out that you would never forget however due to the length of the day and the really cold weather I would say it would be more suitable for slightly older children rather than infants.

Santa Claus Trips

Absolutely brilliant. Forget any nasty reviews. I had to write to praise everyone involved; the staff at Exeter Airport, chocolate money handed out, staff wearing Santa hats and Christmas jumpers. Well done. The lovely announcement that we were due to fly off to see Santa in Lapland. It made us all excited. We flew with Enter air and had no issues at all. We landed and then whisked away by our Jingle Bell bus, singing Christmas songs on route to get our snow suits and boots. The coach was divided into two groups to get our suits and there was a bit of a wait (15 mins max). The staff all spoke English and they were fast and efficient getting you supplied with suits and boots. The longest time was getting yourself and the kids dressed. Back on the bus a 10 minute ride to Winter wonderland. Our group got to see Santa first but the wait was approx 20 mins but the kids didn’t mind they were busy playing in the snow. We were toasting marshmallows on an open fire. We had a bit of a walk to Santa’s house we had to follow the candle lights in the snow. Quite magical. Santa was the real deal, very friendly and we were not rushed at all. Then off to lunch spaghetti bolognese with bread and butter. Then we went on a reindeer sleigh ride, off then for Husky pulled sled, this did take a bit of time to wait approx 30 mins but the children were too busy playing in the snow to worry. There were tobogganing sleds to use and little huts to keep warm with doughnuts, biscuits and hot berry juice. My only tip is to take snacks for the journey home as Enontekiö airport is very small and no cafe. There were delays due to the snow falling and 4 planes due to take off. We were 30 mins late getting on the plane and then we had to wait until the plane was de-iced before we could take off which probably took about an hour. It’s a long day but we all slept on the plane home. Well done, the kids thought it was absolutely brilliant. I didn’t hear any complaints from the children and we had a 4 year old and a 7 year old. All the children on the plane were quiet and exhausted. Fantastic day.

What a day trip this was!!!!!! Flight delay to start which is not good when it’s a day trip but when we arrived we were instantly told the hours would be made up and they were. Flight was with Enterair, nothing spectacular, no Christmas feeling on the flight other than a few stickers dotted about the plane. Meal going out was a breakfast, I didn’t think it was bad but my 8 year old granddaughter didn’t eat it. After a 3 hour flight we arrived to a snow filled airport. I have to take my hat off for the smooth landing considering the amount of snow. We were met by Ryan our rep who was very friendly and explained about the snow suites and boots we were going to be fitted with on our first stop. It was organised chaos, not enough seats to put boots on for someone older like me but a rep called Kelly was on hand like a little elf with snow suit to fit, I have some arthritis in my ankle joint and I was waiting for my daughter to help me but no little elf Kelly was already there putting my boots on, zipping the suit up. What an absolute ⭐️ star she was. We headed of the the village just 5 mins away and the magic begins!!!! Ryan split us into 2 groups, 1 half went to eat, do play time in the snow and see Santa. The other group was us, we went to find the Husky rides, snow mobiles, reindeer rides, that was in between my granddaughter throwing herself in the snow at any opportunity, she loved it. We then met back up with Ryan to swap activities. We went into the cabin for some lunch, very basic pasta and Bolognese sauce with bread and juice. To be fair it was hot and a welcomed sit down. Then it was our time to go find Santa in the woods, but not without coming across little elf Kelly again. I asked her if she would give pointers to Santa about my wonderful granddaughter which she gladly did while another rep from Davi arctic Alex was on the floor playing in the snow with my granddaughter, what a set of reps these were, absolutely amazing they did Transun proud. After Santa told Kara he had been waiting for her and went on to talk to her about her dancing shows, friends, it was just perfect. We then had some free time to do what ever we wanted, obviously we went back to the huskies if only to stroke them, back to the snow mobiles, played in the snow, go sledging, went for a hot drink and a visit to the gift shop then it was time to leave. A quicker stop off at the snow suit chalet to give them their suites and boots and collect our own clothes and items then back to the airport for our 3 hour flight home. Again Enterair provided a meal, we had to send ours back as it was cold but they brought us another one that was much better and orange juice or water. All in all this was the most perfect, magical dY I have ever spent, my 8 year old granddaughter loved every second. Was it expensive YES would I do it again absolutely. Shout out to Ryan and Kelly from Transun and Alex from Davvi arctic. Christine Bean

Surprised our boys aged 10 & 7 with an amazing day trip to Lapland. Everything was so well organised. All food was included starting with breakfast on the plane, a meal at the restaurant at the winter village (which included soup, bread basket, chicken nuggets, chips, spaghetti bolognese and veg), a voucher for a hot drink and a cookie at the church and finally a meal home on the plane. We had taken additional snacks with us but didn't feel we needed it. There was a little shop on site that you could buy some extra drinks/snacks if wanted. Arriving at the tiny Enontekio airport, passport control was quick and within 10 minutes we were introduced to our rep Jamie and on our coach (named the figgy pudding). Enontekio is a true winter wonderland and is was so beautiful. We sang carols enroute to being suited and booted (10-15mins tranfer) then tranferred another 5 mins to Santa's village. Our group was split so some went husky riding (you get given a voucher as you can only do this activity once) and some went to see Santa. The trip to see Santa was fantastic, we took a long snowmobile ride over the frozen lake finally arriving at Santa's hut. It is timed so that there is only one family there at a time so it felt very personal. The elves greeted us and took the boys to meet Santa who was wonderful and gave the boys a little gift. It was Magical! After we were free to do the activities as we chose - reindeer rides, sledging, and snowmobiling. If you show a UK driving licence you can drive the snowmobiles yourself - this is a must! They are so easy to operate and the track over the frozen lake was amazing. We had enough time to have 2 seperate goes! The children have to go on a sled behind a guide unless they're 15, when they can go on the back of the actual snowmobile. We had a wonderful day, it wasn't rushed or commercialised at all and I would definitely recommend as the memories will last a lifetime.

We travelled with Transun to Enontekiö on Christmas Eve and had the most amazing time. We were particularly unsure because we did not originally book with Transun and were rebooked to them after Thomas Cook collapsed. We took our 4 and 8 year old girls who had the best time. Enterair was fine - staff were friendly, flight was prompt, food was standard air food and we took things to do on the plane. When arriving it took no time to get through and put onto our coach. Only 10 mins for suits and boots then 5 mins to the winter wonderland site. It was magical - so authentic and beautiful - such a wonderful experience that we are pleased to have had. We enjoyed all of the activities, food, drinks, biscuits and seeing Santa. Staff really friendly and a lovely gifts shop. All in all I think we were there for 6/7 hours. Flight back was again quick, easy and staff were great. Highly recommend this trip - I would go again next year if i could!! Thank you Transun!

We travelled on 23rd Dec from Glasgow with our 2 girls 10 & 5yr old.. After seeing a lot of bad reviews.. especially from the other Scottish tour from Edinburgh.. I had so much fear of things going wrong.. Honestly can't fault very much at all.. we found the full day very organised and efficient. Our tour rep Jamie was fantastic.. my kids just loved him as he made so much effort with everyone. We managed to do everything with minimal queing.. but by far the visit to Santa was beyond magical.. I managed to switch my girls letter before they threw them in the fire so we slipped them to the elf just before we went in.. when she pulled them out n Santa started reading them and confirmed to my oldest it was her handwriting her face was a picture as she's getting to that age.. lol. His manner and humour was spot on.. all the staff where amazing and really made the day worth every penny.. The only down points was when we got to the airport we had breakfast then on the plane we had another breakfast then as soon as we got there we were 1st to have our meal so ended up stuffed really early on then we didn't have another meal until the plane on the way home.. so be prepared with food cos there isn't a lot of options to buy food and it's really expensive.. the only other down point is when we got to the airport we went through security and had to dump all our drinks then there was no where to buy drinks on the other side so by the time we got on the plane we had to wait for our meal to get a drink which was a small glass of water or orange juice or tea or coffee.. and no option to buy a drink on the plane so every1 was really thirsty by the time the meal came.. transun could mabe have a bottle of water on the seats for everyone boarding or even have a rep on the other side of security handing out water.. Apart from that the whole day was really smooth.. Well done to the whole team for a truly magical experience and making our Christmas extra special. Xxx

Absolutely fantastic, travelled from Birmingham for 5 days with hubby and 2 kids (well one at 24 and the other 21 whilst we were there) . Enter air cabin crew were friendly and efficient and the leg room was second to none (son is 6ft 5in) . Transun rep Greg was absolutely lovely, helped me so I wouldn’t slip. Stayed at the Davvi Arctic Star, very clean, comfortable, nothing was too much trouble. Room cleaned every day if required and fresh clean towels daily. Food was fantastic!!! They even did my son a 21st birthday cake. Excursions very well organised, we did husky, snowmobile and reindeer plus a night in an igloo which we only lasted 2.5 hours due to it being -25. If you have long hair make sure it’s tied out the way as it may freeze and can easily break off. I struggle with arthritis and the walk to the gift shop was a little too far so Mikey (Transun driver) took our family there and picked us up an hour later. Aiden another driver bought my son a large bar of chocolate for his birthday and Marvin another driver was very helpful. We were fortunate to see the northern lights whilst there (download an app called my aurora) it gives you updates on best times and places it’s best seen. All in all the best holiday ever, so much so we looking at booking for next year. 🎄🦌❄️☃️. The Atkin family

What is the difference between ATOL & ABTA? ATOL and ABTA both offer protection schemes for the travelling public. The main difference between the two is what is included in that protection. ABTA covers package holidays that include rail, cruise or self-drive transport but does not offer protection for flight-based packages. ABTA also provides advice for people who believe their holiday package has been mis-sold and are seeking compensation.

ATOL covers package holidays that include flights- for example, a flight and accommodation package. If your travel company ceases trading, you will be entitled to a refund if you have not yet travelled. If you are on holiday at the time, you will be flown home with repatriation flights through ATOL. However, ATOL does not cover flights which have been purchased directly through the airline.

Another difference between the two is that ATOL is a compulsory licensing system run by the government, while ABTA is a voluntary scheme that travel companies can sign up to if they meet the requirements.

Accommodation

Majatalo, Hotelli Jussantupa, Davvi Arctic Lodge, Davvi Arctic Star, Cahkal Hotel

Exclusive direct flights from 14 UK airports

Curious spectators have long since been captivated by the Northern Lights, and it’s not hard to see why. The shifting swirls of the Aurora envelop you in their majesty as they illuminate the Arctic skies, performing beguiling dances of colour: twists and turns, bends and bows. Rolling. Spinning. Dancing.

But the playful Aurora isn’t always flamboyant: it’s elusive. You’ll have to find it.

Fortunately, we at Transun know where to go. Lapland specialists with almost four decades of experience behind us, we know a thing or two about searching for the Aurora Borealis – that’s why all of our holidays are based in uncommercial, True Lapland locations, where city light pollution doesn’t impair the intensity of the Northern Lights. Moreover, all of our holiday locations are based along the Official Northern Lights Route, a 600km route weaving through Lapland, recognised by the governments of Finland, Sweden and Norway as offering the best viewings of the Aurora.

Our 3 or 4-night breaks in True Lapland are a perfect winter holiday for those looking to catch a display of the Northern Lights, and also experience a host of once-in-a-lifetime Arctic activities: mush a team of huskies across the Arctic tundra, drive a snowmobile down a frozen river, and ride a reindeer sleigh through the snow-capped forest. Why not stay a night in an igloo, too?

For a longer stay, you may like to consider our 7-night Aurora Hunter holiday.

Our Northern Lights holiday is an adults-based tour suitable for those aged 12 or above.

Included Activities

Our Northern Lights holidays are arranged so that you can make the most of your time in Lapland and enjoy the extraordinary experiences offered in this very special corner of the world.

Your holiday begins with a morning flight to Enontekio Airport from one of 14 UK airports, on our direct charter flight, exclusive to Transun. Enontekio is a very small airport and yours is likely to be the only flight that day. From there, you make the one-hour transfer to Karesuando, a remote border village that straddles Swedish and Finnish Lapland. Located some 300km inside the Arctic Circle, Karesuando is located perfectly on the Northern Lights Route and offers the choice of two hotels: the Davvi Arctic Star in Swedish Karesuando, or the more rustic Davvi Arctic Lodge, in Finnish Karesuando. Your included accommodation is on a full-board basis. We also provide you with thermal snow suits and boots for the duration of your stay, so you are well equipped for Lapland’s Arctic temperatures.

Although the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and can never be guaranteed, you’ll still have an amazing holiday thanks to the host of once-in-a-lifetime excursions which are included in this holiday. A full itinerary is given on arrival so it can be best organised around weather conditions and Northern Lights predictions, and will include the following:

Duration: 2 hours

An evening excursion when, with the crisp Arctic sky overhead, you head to a vantage point in the wilderness with the hope of seeing the fabled Northern Lights. Two adults share a snowmobile*.

Duration: 1 hour

A guided walk through the forest to a spectacular viewpoint, overlooking the border-village of Karesuando. From here, you may be lucky enough to witness the Northern Lights dancing above the village.

Mush a team of excited huskies through spectacular Lapland scenery - they're eager for the off! Two adults share a sled and dog team.

Learn about the importance of reindeer to the people of Lapland on a visit to a traditional kota and herding corral. Then, enjoy a reindeer sleigh ride - a time-old mode of transport in these parts!

Just returned from a three night stay at Davvi Lodge which has been excellent. Amazing organization throughout the whole trip. Every one of the staff have been lovely. Our two bed room in the fell house was warm and very clean. We all thoroughly enjoyed the activities, where else can you mush your own team of huskies and ride a snowmobile at midnight. Cross country skiing was great fun and worked up an appetite for lunch. The food was perfect, wholesome, tasty and satisfying. All in all we've had a lovely time and have some wonderful memories. Can't wait to return.

My wife's and my priority was to see the Northern Lights (which we did though not on the organised excursion to do so) but we also loved the idea of the inclusive trips, such as the sleigh ride (good), dog sledding (awesome), snow-shoe trek (brilliant) and the snowmobiles (harder and bumpier than it looks). From the moment we arrived, we were looked after attentively by an international cast of employees, all of which were unfailingly helpful and polite. The food was plentiful if not a little basic, but very wholesome. The hotel rooms were plain, but warm and reasonably comfortable. The excursions were well organised by an enthusiastic and knowledgeable crew and the various transportation was always on time. The loaned snow-suits and boots did their job well! Great fun, awesome experiences, wonderful setting, good value for money and highly recommended. I have recommended it to all of my work colleagues and we will almost certainly return with other family members in the future.

We had a fabulous time staying at The Davvi Arctic Lodge in one of the cabins. All the staff at the Davvi were very helpful and cheery. The staff allocating snow suits and boots were so helpful and made sure we were happy with the outfits, which were incredibly useful and good at keeping us warm and dry. The restaurant food was good and plentiful and the ambience in the restaurant was lovely. Our cabin was good and very cosy, so cosy we had to turn the heating off (the weather was mild -5 when we were there!). We loved the husky sledging - such fun with a wonderful chap who owns the huskies. The reindeer are beautiful and the night time sleigh ride through the forest was magical (just lacked the stars that night!) Visited the IceHotel, not our type of hotel, but very interesting to visit plus a lovely lunch in their restaurant before heading home. Definitely recommend this holiday (even though we only caught a glimpse of a green haze which I'm told was the Northern Lights). We'll just have to visit again!

We packed in a great deal of enjoyable activities and even though we didn't see the Northern Lights, it didn't seem to matter as everything else was so good. We will never forget the early morning howling of the husky dogs as they eagerly waited to get going, pulling our sleds. All the guides were friendly and knowledgeable and helped to make it a really exciting experience of a lifetime.

A holiday which was nothing like we had ever had before...and totally brilliant. We were probably lucky with the weather as it was quite mild (which meant snow) but it also cleared enough to see the Northern Lights. We thought we would have some time on our hands but the whole break was packed, the planned excursions were filled in with a walk over the frozen river to Sweden (church, museum and hot chocolate), tobogganing down the hill and walks up the hill. The lodges were fantastic, comfy and very warm. We even splashed out on the hot tub (with chocs and sparkling wine). The planned excursions were very well organised and the staff were lovely. We shall never forget the huskies, the reindeer, snow-shoeing and, best of all, snowmobiling to go ice fishing (I didn't even catch anything but my wife did). Great holiday, not cheap, but such a great experience.

- Stephen Mottershead

Frequently asked questions, what is the day-to-day itinerary of the holiday.

A full itinerary of what happens on each day is given on arrival in Lapland. Itineraries are not circulated beforehand since there are often many changes. Activities and excursions are planned around expected weather conditions and Northern Lights predictions to give the best chance of seeing the Aurora or minimizing disruption caused by weather. Our activities and excursions operate in 'True Lapland' and are susceptible to adverse weather conditions such as snow drifts and storms, so it may be necessary to reschedule some arrangements at short notice.

What is the deposit?

To confirm the holiday, the deposit is £200 per person. The final balance is due ten weeks before departure, though these terms may differ if you have booked through a travel agent.

Is this tour suitable for children?

Due to the extreme weather conditions in Lapland, we generally don’t recommend this tour for children under the age of twelve since a great deal of time will be spent outdoors in Arctic conditions. A full driving licence is required for the snowmobiles, so children may not be able to participate in this activity.

What currency should I take?

The currency in Finland is the Euro; the currency in Sweden is the Krona. Many hotels and establishments in the Nordic countries will not accept cash and only accept card payments. The Davvi Arctic Star does not accept cash. All Transun optional excursions are advertised in Sterling; credit and debit cards are accepted as payment for excursions booked in resort.

Will I see the Northern Lights?

The Aurora Borealis is a natural phenomenon and so can never be guaranteed. However, our resorts are often located on the official Northern Lights Route, as designated by the governments of Sweden, Norway and Finland, because of the propensity and intensity of Northern Lights sightings – so chances of seeing them here are amongst the best in the world!

Can anyone drive a snowmobile?

Driving a snowmobile in Finland is like driving a car, and similar laws apply. A full valid driving licence is required - please ensure you bring this with you as it must be presented in resort. Normal traffic laws apply on snowmobile routes. A damage waiver must be signed before commencing the activity. Credit card verification is taken and a €980 excess is payable for any damage, irrespective of severity, prior to leaving resort. The guide’s safety instructions must be followed, and safety helmets must be worn at all times.

Can I add on additional excursions and activities when in Lapland?

If you wanted to make your holiday extra special, it is possible to add on additional activities to your tour after arriving in Lapland. However, availability of activities and excursions is limited and so we recommend that you book your place before you travel to guarantee your place. Some of the most popular excursions added to the Northern Lights tour are the igloo, ice fishing, and the Ice Hotel visit, and these are likely to sell out first. Please note that glass igloos must be booked at least 3 days prior to departure.

WE CAN HELP YOU START PLANNING YOUR NEXT TRIP

Book online today.

* Please note: All snowmobile activities carry a €980.00 damage deposit which is payable locally. The driver of the snowmobile must be at least 18 years old and be in possession of a valid driving licence.

lapland day trip exeter

While the idea of a trip to Lapland is idyllic, for many of us an extended holiday in the cold is more fun in theory than practice.

But escorted tour operator, Newmarket Holidays is offering a unique day trip to Lapland that will fill everyone with Christmas spirit without involving an extended and pricey break - and they even provide thermal clothes, boots and equipment needed to keep warm in the snowy tundras.

Making the most of every last minute, the holiday company uses privately chartered planes to travel from the UK to Pajala in Swedish Lapland , leaving plenty of time for a husky ride, an exhilarating snowmobile experience and of course, a private meeting with the big man himself. A traditional hot lunch is also included.

Flying from Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cardiff , East Midlands, Humberside, Leeds Bradford, Liverpool, Gatwick, Norwich and Teesside, festive fans will touch down in the Arctic Circle, before setting off to find Santa’s Village . With the place all to yourselves for the day, this is the very best way to experience a real-life winter wonderland.

Once everyone is wrapped up in their thermals, guests can take a magical ride in a traditional reindeer-drawn sleigh, a trip through the countryside pulled by real huskies and a thrilling snowmobile experience. There is also plenty of time for a quick toboggan ride and snowball fights are only ever a moment away.

After a hearty lunch, get ready to tread the 'secret path' through the forest to find Santa's log cabin home. Spending some private time with Santa is the perfect end to your authentic and intimate Lapland experience .

The Lapland Santa Experience Day Trip is proving to be a big hit with one of the many five-star reviews describing it as "magical". The happy traveller went on to say that the day trip was "Extremely well organised. Never stopped eating all day and lots of hot drinks available all day. The activities were amazing.

"The ladies that escorted us were absolutely fantastic and everything you would want from holiday representatives - kind, friendly, helpful. I can’t recommend this trip enough if anyone has the opportunity to treat themselves. The memories will last a lifetime."

With limited spaces still available during December , Santa fans should book now to ensure they don't miss their chance to capture the magic this Christmas.

There is also a 10% discount available on bookings made between now and September, 29 , making your exclusive Lapland experience more affordable than ever.

Prices include return flights, hand luggage and coach transfers in Lapland . The 10% discount applies to selected Lapland day trip departures, and full terms and conditions can be found here .
