UQ Pipe Band makes a splash in Scotland

emmanuel college uq tour

The University of Queensland Pipe Band at Emmanuel College has completed a successful tour of Scotland, representing Queensland and coming home with four trophies. Emmanuel College Principal and pipe band patron Adjunct Professor Stewart Gill said the band played at two high-profile Highland gathering competitions and the World Pipe Band Championships. “We won the Grade 4 competition at the Dundonald Highland Games, beating local and international bands,” Dr Gill said. The band was also awarded Best International Pipe Band and performed a well-received set of Australian tunes in a parade through the town following the competition.

The band backed this up with two first-place trophies at the Perth Highland Games, beating 19 bands to win the Grade 4 March set, and also won their Grade 4 March, Strathspey and Reel (MSR) set. In the week leading up to the world championships in August, the UQ band won international recognition performing in the Glasgow city centre for the Piping Live! festival, and marching with three other international bands in the World Championships Street Parade.

“This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for band members and they played extremely well, despite difficult conditions, but unfortunately did not reach the finals,” he said.

Earlier this year the band won the Grade 4 championship title at the 2013 Queensland Pipe Championships for the second year in a row, as well as a string of other prizes at local competitions.

“We felt proud to compete in Scotland representing the University, Emmanuel College, Queensland and Australia at the world championships,” Dr Gill said.

“The trip was made possible by the band’s fundraising efforts, as well as the generosity of the major sponsors—Emmanuel College, The University of Queensland (UQ), St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital, The Society of St Andrew of Scotland (Queensland) and RBS Morgans.

“Performing at the world championships significantly raised both UQ and Emmanuel College’s profiles on an international level, and I’m happy to say we achieved great success and recognition on many fronts.”

Tax-deductible donations to support the band can be made through the Emmanuel College Foundation via Sharon Burridge on 3871 9362 or [email protected] . For more information about the band or to hire the band or a piper, visit www.uqpipeband.com , visit the Facebook page or contact Emmanuel College UQ.

Academic program

Academic program

We offer a challenging, rigorous and rewarding academic program based on the Oxbridge tradition of critical thinking.

Sports

Emmanuel College competes in the UQ Inter-College Competition (ICC), along with 10 other colleges, and hosts an annual Rugby 7s tournament.

ICC sport is competitive but open to all skill levels, and involves a manageable time commitment. Despite having lower resident numbers than single-sex colleges, we regularly place in the top three positions in both the men’s and women’s ICC competitions.

ICC sports are AFL, athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket (men’s), cross country, hockey, netball (women’s), Rugby Union (men’s), rowing, soccer, swimming, table tennis, tennis, touch football, volleyball and water polo.

Cultural activities

Cultural activities

College cultural life provides lots of fun opportunities to get involved, showcase your talents and compete against other colleges. We encourage College-wide participation at any skill level in singing, dancing, music, theatre, visual art, public speaking, chess and more. UQ Inter-College Competition activities include art shows, Bandfest, chess, Choralfest, College Idol, Dancefest, debating, One Act Play and oratory competitions. Emmanuel has won the overall Cultural Cup in several recent years.

A uniquely Emmanuel experience is Theatre Restaurant, a yearly performance accompanied by dinner, open for three nights to Emmanuel students, family, friends and other colleges.

Pipe Band

The award-winning Emmanuel College Highlanders at the University of Queensland pipe band performs regularly at events including Anzac Day commemorations, the Woodford Folk Festival and the Australian Celtic Festival. It participates in local competitions and has competed at the Australian Pipe Band Championships and at the World Pipe Band Championships in Scotland.

Band membership is open to all members of the College, and includes tuition in pipes and drums. New pipers and drummers are always welcome.

Emmanuel College offers an annual piping scholarship to a student who shows sound academic ability and superior talent as a piper.

Leadership

It’s important to us that all our students have opportunities to become leaders at College and in the wider community.

Towards the end of each year, students vote for members of the Students’ Club Committee, which forms the leadership executive of the student body for the next year. In the residential wings, we appoint senior students as Wing Community Leaders and provide training to help them support others in their wing.

Opportunities arise throughout the year for students to fill other leadership roles such as community service organisers, international student coordinators, Christian convenors and student IT officers.

Mentoring and work experience

Mentoring and work experience

One of the unique advantages of being part of the Emmanuel community is the opportunity to connect with our alumni network.

Many of our alumni offer their services as professional and personal mentors for current students. Others provide work experience opportunities for students during the semester or in breaks, some with a view to future employment.

College staff will advise on and facilitate these arrangements.

Let's Go

Why Schedule a Campus Visit?

You’re making an important decision. You’ve browsed our website, reviewed brochures and done your research. Still, getting a feel for campus can help you make your final choice. Take in the culture and our Moscow location, experience life in the dorms and dining halls and see where you’ll be learning. Begin to see yourself at U of I with a campus visit.

Confirm your initial impression. If research grabs your attention, a campus visit goes beyond. Determine if you feel at home as a Vandal and if a particular program of study is right for you. Use your visit or campus tour to meet professors and other students, narrow down your list of majors and make a definite decision once you receive your acceptance letter in the spring.

Make the Most of Your Campus Visit

You’ve heard this advice before — don’t just look at buildings. Instead, keep the following in mind whether you’re attending an event, campus tour or a virtual session:

  • When to schedule your visit: Check out our Moscow campus as students attend class, engage in research and go about their day-to-day lives as Vandals. Ideally, attend a tour before submitting your application, preferably in the spring of your junior year or early fall of your senior year.
  • Be ready to ask questions: Make a list ahead of time to ask your tour guide, admissions counselor and students you see around campus.
  • Consider multiple campus visits: Start virtually to get a feel for our campus. Then, to get a more personal perspective, consider attending an on-campus visit. Here, opt for a student-guided campus tour, and schedule in visits with schools or departments for programs you’re curious about.
  • Take notes: What makes U of I unique? How does being a Vandal resonate with you? Document your visit with notes and photos to reference later.
  • Prepare ahead of time: Avoid attending a campus visit on a whim. Instead, schedule your visit in advance, make plans for a college or program visit, explore our virtual resources, review a map to understand the layout of our campus and make travel arrangements. Additionally, continue your research to ask questions during your visit.
