WHAT IS MAMMA MIA THE MUSICAL ABOUT?

From West End to global phenomenon, MAMMA MIA! is Judy Craymer’s ingenious vision of staging the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs with a sunny, funny tale of a mother, a daughter and three possible dads unfolding on a Greek island idyll.

To date, it has been seen by over 65 million people in 50 productions in 16 different languages. In 2011 it became the first Western musical ever to be staged in Mandarin in the People’s Republic of China. MAMMA MIA the musical became the 8th longest running show in Broadway history where it played a record-breaking run for 14 years.

The movie version is said to have been the highest-grossing live-action musical film of all time upon its release in 2008. A second film, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, opened in July last year and is reportedly the most successful live musical movie sequel of all time.

With music and lyrics by Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus,  Mamma Mia!  is written by Catherine Johnson, directed by Phyllida Lloyd and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast.

Smash-hit musical Mamma Mia! returns to Glasgow for four-week run.. and you can get tickets early with the Daily Record

SMASH-HIT musical Mamma Mia! is returning to Scotland next year and you can buy tickets before the big rush - thanks to the Daily Record.

Two years ago, the show's run at the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow saw ticket sales of 85,000 during the month-long stay.

The spectacular production will be back in the city at the SECC for a four-week run from March 5 until April 3, 2011.

And in a special partnership, we've teamed up with Mamma Mia! to offer our readers the chance to buy tickets for the show first.

One of the show's producers admits they should have stayed longer and Glasgow - famously name-checked in the Abba song Super Trouper "When I called you last night from Glasgow" - was on the top of his wish list to return to.

Nick Grace, associate producer of the Mamma Mia! International Tour which has been seen by more than three million people in 45 cities in 28 countries a diverse as China, Lithuania, Greece, Taiwan, Hungary and more recently New Zealand, revealed: "Glasgow has always been top of my list to come back to.

"Ever since we went, we realised we didn't stay long enough last time. We sold out and it was a phenomenal success.

"But we were on our way to Athens last time in 2008, then on to Monte Carlo and Paris, and just didn't have an option to do more dates.

"However, the success, the audience reaction and the enjoyment of being up there has made me want to find an opportunity to come back."

This feel-good production has been enthralling audiences around the world since it was last in Scotland.

The International Tour is now in its sixth year and Glasgow will be even more special than just being the city Abba name-checked in one of their most famous songs.

For the Glasgow run will be an all-new production with an all-new, as yet unannounced cast.

Two years ago, Haley Flaherty, from Falkirk, Stirlingshire, played Sophie Sheridan, the bride-to-be who wants to find out who her dad is so he can walk her down the aisle.

Nick can't say whether there will be another Scot in the cast but doesn't see why that might not happen.

And he's got his fingers crossed that one of the Abba legends, Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Fältskog, will be there.

Nick said: "Björn especially often comes to see the International Tour and Glasgow is one of the key cities I'd consider him to come to.

"Listening to the crowd's reaction, especially at Super Trouper, was special. Nobody holds back."

Inspired by the story-telling magic of Abba's timeless songs, writer Catherine Johnson's sunny, funny tale of family and friendship unfolds on a Greek island paradise.

On the eve of her wedding, a daughter's quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother's past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.

The musical includes all Abba's greatest hits including Dancing Queen, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!, Knowing Me, Knowing You and Take A Chance On Me.

The musical was also made into a hit film starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, which has added a strong family element to the audiences.

Judy Craymer, the musical's creator and producer, said: "We are thrilled to be returning to Scotland. We've had such fun and been so well received previously we couldn't stay away any longer."

Two years ago, Mamma Mia! broke all previous box office records at the 3000-seater Clyde Auditorium.

Eighty per cent of tickets to the show were sold by the opening night and a total of 85,000 tickets over all performances.

Ben Goedegebuure, director of sales at the SECC, said: "Mamma Mia! is the longest running and single biggest-grossing show we've ever had.

"We are delighted that Mamma Mia! is returning. The show was a phenomenal success last time and we can't wait for Mamma Mia! to work its magic once again".

Visit the Mamma Mia! website for more information: www.mamma-mia.com

BE FIRST TO BOOK GREAT NIGHT OUT

In a special partnership, Mamma Mia! has joined forces with the Daily Record to offer its readers the opportunity to buy tickets for the show in advance.

Mamma Mia! is showing at SECC from March 5, 2011 to April 3, 2011.

Tickets, priced from £15 to £39.50 are available from www.ticketSOUP.com or telephone 0844 395 4000, quoting "Dancing Queen"

Review: MAMMA MIA!, King's Theatre, Glasgow

BWW Review: MAMMA MIA!, King's Theatre, Glasgow

Shortly before her wedding on a Greek island, 20-year-old Sophie (Jena Pandya) decides that she wants her father to be the one to give her away. There's just one problem- she doesn't know who he is. After finding her mother Donna's diary from the summer she fell pregnant, Sophie invites the three potential candidates with the hope of finding out who her dad is before her big day.

Mamma Mia! is perhaps the ultimate jukebox musical. ABBA songs are shoehorned into the script with much dialogue existing just to lead into another number. It's a bit silly at times but it's also an awful lot of fun. It would be too great a feat to cram all of ABBA's hits into just one stage show but most of the best-loved songs are there including "Dancing Queen"; "Waterloo" and "Does Your Mother Know". The songs are rattled through at lightning speed but there is just enough of a breath for Sara Poyzer (Donna) to belt out "The Winner Takes It All" to rapturous applause.

Some of the script seems a little outdated but the familiarity of the story seems to be a selling point for many as the audience is delighted to recognise gags from the 2008 movie. Mamma Mia! is known for its enthusiastic audience, desperate for a singalong but the show is designed to allow everyone to join in for the encore.

On a dreary wet night in Glasgow, Mamma Mia! provides some much-needed sunshine, joy and escapism.

Mamma Mia! runs at the King's Theatre, Glasgow until 11 June.

BJÖRN ULVAEUS ( Music & Lyrics ) 1945 Björn was born on 25 April in Gothenburg. When he was six years old, the family moved to the small town of Västervik, and this is where Björn grew up. In the mid-Fifties, Björn fell in love with rock’n’roll and skif e. By the early Sixties, he was a member of a folk group called the West Bay Singers. 1963 The group entered a talent contest arranged by Swedish radio. This led to discovery by songwriter and publisher Stig Anderson and his partner, Bengt Bernhag. Stig and Bengt had recently started a record company called Polar Music. The band acquired a new name, the Hootenanny Singers, and quickly became one of Sweden’s most popular groups of the Sixties. 1966 Björn had a chance meeting with Benny Andersson, himself a member of Sweden’s number-one pop group, The Hep Stars. They hit it off and wrote their rst song together, ‘Isn’t It Easy to Say’. Björn recorded a couple of solo singles in the late Sixties, at which point he also started concentrating more on his collaboration with Benny Andersson. 1970 Björn and Benny started releasing records as a duo and also staged a cabaret show together with their fiancées, Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. 1971 Björn and Agnetha married on 6 July. 1972-82 ABBA. 1982 Björn and Benny started writing the musical Chess with lyricist Tim Rice. 1984 A concept album for Chess was released in the autumn. 1986 The musical opened in London’s West End in May. 1988 Chess received its Broadway premiere. A reworked version of the musical opened in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2002. 1990 Björn and Benny decided to write a new musical. This time, they wanted to write exclusively in Swedish, and they chose the Emigrants novel series by author Vilhelm Moberg as the basis for their work. 1995 The resulting musical, Kristina från Duvemåla (Kristina from Duvemåla), opened in October. The show ran for three and a half years at various theatres in the Swedish cities of Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm. Björn and Benny’s most recent musical is Hjälp sökes (Help Wanted), a collaboration with playwright Kristina Lugn and Kristina director Lars Rudolfsson. Björn writes many of the lyrics for the Benny Andersson Orchestra, and has involved himself in the stagings of MAMMA MIA! . 2008 MAMMA MIA! THE MOVIE was released. 2016 MAMMA MIA! THE PARTY opened in Stockholm in January, with Björn as one of the producers. 2018 MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN was released.

Thus far, this has resulted in seven CD albums and several summer tours. 2007 Benny was inducted in to the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. 2008 He was appointed Honorary Doctor of the College of Humanities at Stockholm University, and at Luleå University of Technology in 2012. Why See Mamma Mia!?

Musicals Cheap Theatre

THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC!

You've seen the movies - now find out where it all started when the ultimate feel-good musical goes on tour!

Based around the songs of Swedish pop legends ABBA, Mamma Mia! is a true worldwide musical phenomenon. The feel-good musical is now currently installed in both the West End and Broadway, and has countless touring versions performing across the globe. In 2008 it spawned a movie adaptation, starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan. Helmed by the musical's original director Phyllida Lloyd, it became the largest grossing movie musical of all time, a feat that sequel, Mamma Mia, Here We Go Again is well on the way to equaling!

The show was originally conceived by English producer Judy Craymer and written by Catherine Johnson. With the blessing of Abba's songwriters, Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, the show premiered in London 1999. It's infectious mixture of classic pop songs, skin tight Lycra outfits and unabashed positivity was a runaway success, confounding the creator's own rather humble expectations. The score contains all your favourite ABBA numbers including Dancing Queen, SOS, The Winner Takes it All and Super Trouper.

WHAT'S THE PLOT?

Sophie is preparing for her wedding to fiancee Sky on a sunny Greek Island. The one problem is that she doesn't know who her father is. Leafing through her mother's diary, she discovers that it could be one of three men. Taking matters into her own hands, she invites all three to the ceremony, hoping that she'll spark up an instant connection with whoever is meant to walk her down the aisle.

So, the big day approaches and all the guests arrive. Sophie's mother Donna is horrified at the sight of her former lovers, never suspecting that she would ever set eyes on them again. Sophie meanwhile is unable to pick out her biological father from the trio. Confusion, farcical misunderstandings and a whole lot of singing ensues as Sophie tries to figure it out, all the while fighting her nagging doubts about the wedding itself.

DID YOU KNOW?

The costumes for the Super Trouper sequence are made up of over 400 metres of Lycra.

MAMMA MIA! tour ‘injected with joy’ as it hits Philadelphia’s Academy of Music

PHILADELPHIA - From the diverse cast to the nostalgia of those classic ABBA hits, Broadway’s Mamma Mia! tour heads to Philadelphia’s Academy of Music August 6 -11.

According to Grant Reynolds, who plays the character Sky, the show is "injected with joy."

"I would say that the energy, the fun, the good energy, the larger than life kind of vibe that the movie has, translates within the show," said Reynolds. "You're getting all the hits and classics that you do with the movie…the one thing that we bring that's a little different with the touring production is like this intimacy, with the characters…you are just going through what they're going through with them in real time."

When it comes to the cast list, the aspect of diversity was not missed! Though in the films, Sky is played by British actor Dominic Cooper, as an African American man, Grant Reynolds says he could not have been more proud than to bring the character to life and show how truly important representation is.

"I just love that kids can come to the show and they can feel accepted and they can feel welcomed because there were so many times when I was a kid and I would go see the show, and I would love the production, but, sometimes I would second guess if that could be me, because I maybe didn't necessarily see myself. So I take that as, you know, my biggest honor," said Reynolds. "I'm so happy to be able to be in this show and represent for all the young kids of color, especially like my young Black boys…I'm very happy that we have the representation that we do."

Grant Reynolds is not new to working on films with diverse casts and grand messages.

He once acted in Tony Award winner Billy Porter’s directorial debut ‘Anything’s Possible’, which follows a confident teen transgender girl, as she navigates her senior year in high school.

"Billy is absolutely amazing," said Reynolds. "I cannot speak highly enough about him. He was so generous with his time and his knowledge…another beautiful project that I was lucky to be a part of that was really centralized in representation. You know, we were telling a trans love story with a beautiful, colorful cast, you know, of all different gender spectrums. I thought that that was so special for me to be able to participate in, but also vastly different than working on this Broadway tour. I think it was beautiful."

According to Grant, crying, laughing and even dancing are all acceptable forms of reactions when immersing yourself in the smash hit musical.

"The biggest thing I could ask for is just for people to have fun and for people to be happy, let loose, sing along, you know, get up and dance. We are absolutely one of those shows. Follow your theater etiquette rules, but have fun. Bring your friends, bring your mom, bring your daughter. Like it's truly one of those shows. It's a family show. It's for everyone," said Reynolds. "I hope everyone is leaving with joy in their hearts."

Don’t miss Broadway’s MAMMA MIA! Tour in Philadelphia August 6 -11 at the Academy of Music.
