ACTIVITY TIPS

Kevin at Falls

Guided Hana tours offer a nice advantage over driving around on your own. Many of the most scenic roads on Maui are rather narrow and winding with bridges that are only one lane wide. An experienced tour guide / driver who knows the road will ensure that everyone in your party gets to enjoy the view. Mini-coaches that these companies use sit higher than a regular rental car and offer superior visibility with oversized windows ... you'll see things looking over the top of the guardrail that you would miss if you were in a rental car. These vehicles are superior to a tour done in a bus (for obvious reasons) or a standard 14 passenger van that is difficult to crawl in and out of. Another advantage of the smaller vehicle with great visibility; don't be surprised if your guide knows your name by the middle of the tour.

If you love to drive on curvy winding one-lane roads that you've never seen before, you might enjoy the drive to Hana! Go for it! Many people HATE the drive to Hana, but love the ride there. That's when a tour like the ones found on this page are perfect. The size of groups on these tours is smaller ... ranging from 22 on the high end with Polynesian Adventures to just 8 with Temptation Tours ... or even smaller with Hawaiian Style Tours if you go the completely private tour route. Ever been on a bus tour where one or two people were holding up a group of 55? That won't happen on smaller tours like these.

For over 20 years the "7 Sacred Pools" was included as a stop on these tours. In the old days this was a great place to visit ... it is a bit of a hike to get down to the stream from the parking lot, but swimming at these waterfalls was a highlight of the tour for many people. Unfortunately several flood-related drownings made the National Park Service much more cautious on allowing swimming at these pools. On days when swimming was not allowed, guests were not even allowed access to the stream level, and views of the waterfalls from the upper trail were not that great. This meant that the stop at the 7 Pools was becoming a time-consuming disappointment for many visitors. Most companies are now going to a different waterfall where swimming is possible on the vast majority of days ... and the time that used to be spent at the 7 Pools is now split between this other waterfall location and the black sand beach park of Waianapanapa, a place guests often said they wished they could have spent more time.

Which tour company to use? Well, the choice MIGHT come down to whichever tour you can find space available on your date! All of these companies have returned to normal operation since the pandemic, but most of them have downsized and are running fewer vehicles per day than what they did in the past. This means that Hana tours are often selling out 6 WEEKS in advance or more! To check availability for your date, select the company you'd like to reserve using the form on the right. That will take you to a calendar where you can check a particular date ... and if the company you've chosen isn't available the number of available seats with the other comapnies will appear. We'll help you FIND space on your date ... as long as you are planning ahead!!!

Many Hana tours sell out a MONTH or more in advance!!!

The road to Hana is a very twisty journey through a lush rainforest with beautiful waterfalls, valleys, black sand beaches and much more to explore. It’s a picturesque day of adventure that’s one of the must-do activities of Maui .

valley isle excursions road to hana

As we were planning our excursions for the NCL Pride of America cruise around Hawaii , we thought it would be fun to tour the road to Hana again. We’ve toured the road several times on our own and also took a private tour , but not taken a tour with one of the van tour companies. After reviewing what Norwegian had to offer plus researching other options, we discovered that the tour offered by Valley Isle Excursions was not only less expensive by about $30 per person, it also covered much more territory. Winner!

valley isle excursions road to hana

The tour conveniently picked us up at where our ship was docked. Update — Valley Isle no longer picks up from the dock. They pick up from Maui Mall, which is less than two miles from the ship. For questions about arranging a tour that aligns with the cruise ship schedule, email Valley Isle at [email protected] or call 808-871-5224.  Additionally, if you are staying in a hotel, note that Valley Isle Excursions will pick up from hotels and condos, too.

valley isle excursions road to hana

Valley Isle Excursions uses 12-passenger vans with large windows. The seats are fairly comfortable considering you’re seated most of the day in between many stops. I believe our tour took roughly nine hours.

valley isle excursions road to hana

The Valley Isle Excursion drivers know this winding road like the back of their hand. Our driver knew exactly where to stop for scenery. This expertise is definitely an advantage over trying to navigate the road on your own. Taking this tour eliminates that stress.

valley isle excursions road to hana

Our tour guide not only knew the road to Hana really well, he was also very knowledgeable about the history of Maui and the culture. His commentary was excellent.

valley isle excursions road to hana

Our tour certainly hit the highlights of the road to Hana. The major stops were at Keanae , Waianapanapa Black Sand Beach,   Kipahulu region of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park , Palapala Church (where Charles Lindbergh is buried) and at a honey farm. At the major stops, we were all given free time to independently roam around to see everything at our own pace.

valley isle excursions road to hana

There were other shorter stops, such as seeing the rainbow eucalyptus tree, Wailua Falls and other waterfalls.

valley isle excursions road to hana

It’s impossible to see all the stops that the road to Hana has to offer in just one day. If I could have added a stop, it would have been to drive down Haneoo Road , just past Hana, to see Alau Island and Hamoa Beach.

valley isle excursions road to hana

The tour includes a nice picnic lunch stop at a flower farm just past the town of Hana. After lunch there was time to walk around the farm. The tour company also provided a cooler full of cold drinks that we could access throughout the day.

valley isle excursions road to hana

The pools of the Oheo Gulch at the Kipahulu district of Haleakala National Park was designated as the “swimming stop” of the tour. Swimming access is subject to safe conditions. On the day we visited, it was flooded and deemed unsafe by the park rangers.

valley isle excursions road to hana

Driving the “back side of Hana/Haleakala” is forbidden by the car rental companies. It really is a challenging drive due to the narrow sections and the rough, unpaved areas. On Valley Isle Excursions tour, you get to see this “forbidden” area while the tour guide navigates the difficult road with his/her expertise.

valley isle excursions road to hana

Even though we’ve driven the road to Hana several other times, we absolutely enjoyed our day out with Valley Isle Excursions. We liked the stress-free experience. I would definitely recommend this tour for anyone who wants to explore the road to Hana, but is unsure about the drive.

My recent experience on the Haleakalā Sunrise Tour with Valley Isle Excursions was absolutely unforgettable. From start to finish, the tour was expertly organized and truly highlighted the incredible beauty and cultural significance of Haleakalā. Our tour guide, Alex, was a standout. His upbeat and kind demeanor made the early morning start a lot more enjoyable. Alex's passion for Maui and its rich history was evident in every story he shared. He educated us on the cultural significance of Haleakalā, explaining the deep connection the Hawaiian people have with this majestic volcano. His insights added a profound layer of appreciation for the breathtaking sights we were about to witness. Witnessing the sunrise from Haleakalā is truly a once-in-a-lifetime event, and being well-prepared allowed us to fully enjoy the spectacular views without distraction. The overall experience was nothing short of unbelievable. The stunning vistas, the serene atmosphere, and the profound sense of being in a place of great cultural importance made this tour a highlight of my trip to Maui. I would highly recommend the Haleakalā Sunrise Tour with Valley Isle Excursions to anyone visiting Maui. It's an experience that blends natural beauty, cultural education, and exceptional service into a perfect package. Don't miss it!

valley isle excursions road to hana

Wow! What a great excursion company!!! So glad we did this ultimate road to Hana. For those of you who may know, this is a very dangerous road with 54 one road bridges and hundreds of twists and turns, but so worth it. Seeing the natural beauty of the drive and the town of Hana itself was amazing. We got to travel the road and back, shop for plenty of souvenirs, and help support the local businesses in addition to an amazing delicious Hawaiian lunch and some swimming! Our tour guide, Travis, was so amazing! He was a local of Hana and was the best tour guide. Having him share the beautiful cultural aspects of the island was so awesome. You can tell he really knows the roads and make sure we had not only an enjoyable, but safe journey as well! We booked this excursion privately, but was able to pick us up right where our cruise docked. Overall 10/10 experience. I loved every minute of it!

Photo of Paul P.

We, my wife, son, and I, booked the road to Hana tour and we had Travis as our guide. Travis was awesome, he quickly learned the names of every tourist (12) on the trip. He pointed out every waterfall( WaterFall!!, he made us sing every time we passed one) Aside from pointing out every type of plant, flower and fruit on the trip, he also gave the group an amazing oral history lesson regarding the true history of Hawaii and her people. We made stops at the black sand beach, Ho'okipa beach (giant sea turtle beach) and a waterfall that I jumped from, pretty awesome. What I took away from that trip, and what I think Travis wanted us to understand, is that the native Hawaiian people are what make those islands special, we are their guests. Treat the islands with respect while you visit.

The tour bus was fine. The tour was ok. The driver was good. But god damn the other passengers were annoying. Everyone was great except one old lady that sat in the front seat and talked none stop. Even while our guide was talking she'd try to finish his sentence when he wasn't asking anyone for input. Would of been nice if the guide ask people not to talk while he was talking. The stops were ok. But it was obvious the driver stopped at the stands where he k es the people and got free food as we stopped. There were other places I wished we stopped but everywhere we stopped minus the water fall and black sand beach were stops that had something for sale. The worst was the lunch stop. The driver said we could wait on the porch till lunch was ready and talk story with the lady there. So I envisioned a porch with seating and a relaxing break. Nope it was a tiny dirty space that they crammed two buses of people into to shop her "handmade" jewelry. Every stop was basically "exit though a gift shop". The much was disappointing. No options it was packed on the bus apparently and you got what you got. I would of been happier stopping and ordering food for myself. My child ate nothing the whole trip. Disappointed we didn't stop for the botanic garden or more places to walk and explore nature a bit. The guide was ok her was nice enough and informative but my son hated the whole experience because he kept picking on him to answer questions or talk when he's super shy introvert so the more the guide tried to talk to him the more he shut down and tuned out. The bus was hot. The breakfast location was beautiful but the muffin and sone were dry and fruit was meh. Over all we had a decent time, I just don't think it was worth the cost. If it was maybe half the price we paid I'd of loved it and suggest it to others. But at the price point it is I think it's kinda scammy that we really only stoped at shops

Had a wonderful experience on the Haleakala tour! They pick you up from the airport and give you a fleece lined poncho at the top! Even with my winter jacket, the poncho was much appreciated. They get you up to the National Park super early so if it's clear, star gazing is incredible and you get a front row view for the sunrise! Breakfast to follow was excellent as well!

Our tour guide Travis was absolutely the best on the Road to Hana tour! This was one of the best experiences here on the island full of history, stories, adventures, all the best spots, trying new things, and becoming O'Hana by the end. I would highly highly recommend booking this so you can sit back and enjoy the ride! If you can, book it with Travis as your native Hawaiin guide!

We did the road to Hana tour and it was amazing! We had Daniel as our guide and he was very knowledgeable, providing us with a lot of information throughout the day as well as at all of our stops along the way. He had a great, fun loving personality and seemed to really enjoy showing us the sites along the way. This was an amazing experience for our family (kids are 14,12 & 10) and I can't recommend this experience enough!

My family of three had a great time with Valley Isle Excursions and our driver, Paula. Hubby and I have done a tour to Hana, but it was our daughter's first time. Paula treated our 9-year old like a princess. She was an excellent driver and really knew her Hawaiian and Hana history. I learned so much on the trip! She really prides herself on the relationships she builds with the people working at our stops-you can tell she's respected. We started with a yummy breakfast at a gorgeous farm. Seeing all the waterfalls, black sand beach, getting banana bread, and visiting local shops made for a fantastic day. To top it off, we stopped to see the turtles and there was a rainbow! Great ending to the day. I highly recommend this tour if you don't want to drive Hana yourself.

We did the sunrise trip to the crater edge. It was a once in a lifetime experience that I am glad I did not drive myself. Valley Isle gave us a confirmation phone call about a half hour before pickup at our timeshare. Abe and Alex are experienced drivers and made the trip more fun. I was glad for the ponchos to keep us a little warmer at the top. Breakfast at the plantation had awesome Mac nut pancakes and coffee grown there. I would highly recommend Valley Isle.

Driver/tour guide Travis is AMAZING! Travis grew up in Hana, and was very knowledgable about the area and was phenomenal driving on those curvy roads getting to Hana. I would not under any circumstance recommend anyone trying to drive those roads unless you're experienced on them! We had looked around a few different Maui excursion companies, and spoke to a few and got the best vibes off of Valley Isle- and took into account the Yelp reviews as well. Prices were great for the full day Road to Hana tour - be sure to check Valley Isle's website for any promotions they may be offering at the time! We paid $264.99/per person, which includes pick-up/drop-off from the hotel, a continental breakfast, and hot lunch. My husband and I were picked up by Travis first. Pick-ups start around 7 AM at your hotel. Travis was really nice and welcoming from the time we entered the bus, and then we picked up the rest of the group. We started our tour off Hana Highway at a restaurant for continental breakfast (see photo in my review), which had a few pastries, fruit (most if not all which was grown on site at the restaurant), and also fresh juice and coffee. Coffee beans were also grown on site which was an additional nice cool touch! We had about 15 minutes for breakfast before starting the tour. We stopped at several places for photos along the way, and for periodic restroom breaks because it is a very long tour throughout the day! We also stopped at a few spots for food including the acclaimed Aunty Sandy's for banana bread and also at the Halfway to Hana spot on the way back from Shave Ice. These spots were not paid for by the tour, but all spots were very affordable (all items less than $10). We never felt pressured to buy anything, but we took part in it as you want to make sure to have energy for the whole tour! :) We stopped in Hana at a spot for lunch, which included a green salad, macaroni salad, and Huli Huli chicken. All food was served buffet style and everything was outstanding! On the way back, we stopped at the black sand beach to swim, followed by a swim at a local waterfall. We were dropped back at our hotel I think between 6:30-7, so it is a long day, but you really get to know your driver, and the people on the tour, so you all feel like a family at the end.

Description

Road to Hana Tour with Valley Isle Excursions will take your along the coast in style, and you will continue on the magnificent road beyond Hana. Experience one of the most breathtaking drives on earth with Maui's #1 Luxury Tour Company. On your way "Heavenly Hana" town, venture through Maui's tropical rainforest, waterfalls, tropical streams and pools, 617 curves, 54 one lane bridges to Hana, spectacular sea cliffs, bamboo jungles, the Keanae Peninsula, colorful and fragrant island flowers, pineapple fields and rainforest vegetation.

There will be between 10-12 stops on this picturesque tour. Some stops include Waianapanapa State Park where you can stroll down to the black sand beach, and a waterfall stop where you can swim in the jungle.

This experience is elevated by the luxurious 12 passenger Comfort Cruisers. Each person enjoys an ultra-comfortable individual reclining chair in this air conditioned vehicle. Your views from the heightened Comfort Cruiser is much better than from a rental car that rides lower to the road. Instead of worrying about driving the windy road, you can sit back, relax, and let the experts guides take you on the journey. They will share their knowledge about Hana Highway, and the sites along the way. The smaller vehicle and personalized service makes Road to Hana Tour far superior than experiences offered by cruise lines.

NOTE: Due to road conditions on the "back side" of Haleakala the tours are not able to go "all the way around" as they have in the past. They will be turning around and returning via the north shore route following the the post-lunch stop at flower farm just beyond Hana town. Swimming will still be offered at Pua'a Ka'a State Park and Waianapanapa State Park.

Swimming on this tour is dependant on weather and stream conditions. No tour price adjustments are made on days when swimming isn't possible. Valley Isle Excursions has changed the swimming stop though … the "7 Sacred Pools" has been frequently closed for swimming by the National Park Service, so they are now stopping at a different waterfall swimming hole where it will be possible to swim on a much more consistent basis.

Valley Isle Hana Adventure Tour Rate (VIE1r/k)

$274.99 per Adult, $254.99 per Child (12 and under), $264.99 per Seniors (over 60)   (plus 4.712% Hawaii sales tax)

Schedule: Currently operating Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday

Pick Up: Between 6:15am and 7:15am depending on your hotel location. 8:05am for Kahului Harbor for cruise ship passengers.

Duration: 10-12 hours depending on your pickup location.

Tour Includes: Continental breakfast at Maui Tropical Plantation, a picnic lunch with your choice of huli huli chicken or veggie and tofu Curry, and complimentary beverage service throughout the day.

Restrictions: Because this is a long day (10-11 hours), this tour is not recommended for children under 3. Valley Isle Excursions does not provide car seats or booster seats, and you must bring your own if you need to use them. Due to spatial limitations, strollers for children and walkers for elderly are not permitted on board the tour vehicle.

What to Wear: Casual attire. Closed toed shoes recommended. Bring a swimsuit and towel if you would llike to swim at a waterfall.

Reservations: Advanced reservations required. This event is "RESERVE NOW PAY LATER"; we need a credit card on file to finalize your reservation but we do not charge you for this reservation until a few days before the beginning of your vacation!

Minimum Notice for Cancellations / Changes: At least 48 hours before the start of the event. All tours go out rain or shine.

Van tours offer a nice advantage over driving around on your own. Many of the most scenic roads on Maui are rather narrow and winding with bridges that are only one lane wide. An experienced tour guide / driver who knows the road will ensure that everyone in your party gets to enjoy the view. Mini-coaches sit higher than a regular rental car and offer superior visibility with oversized windows … you'll see things looking over the top of the guardrail that you would miss if you were in a rental car. These vehicles are superior to a tour done in a bus (for obvious reasons) or a standard 14 passenger van that is difficult to crawl in and out of. Another advantage of the smaller vehicle – don't be surprised if your guide knows your name by the middle of the tour. If you love to drive on curvy winding one-lane roads that you've never seen before, you might enjoy the drive to Hana! Go for it! Many people LOVE the ride to Hana, but few love the actual DRIVING. That's when a tour like Valley Isle Excursions is perfect. Their Hana adventure is really first quality … the food is excellent, the ride comfortable, and the group is small. Ever been on a bus tour where one or two people were holding up a group of 55? That won't happen on smaller tours like this. It's a good choice.

For over 20 years the "7 Sacred Pools" was included as a stop on this tour. In the old days this was a great place to visit … it is a bit of a hike to get down to the stream from the parking lot, but swimming at these waterfalls was a highlight of the tour for many people. Valley Isle Excurions has decided to go to a different waterfall where swimming is possible on the vast majority of days … and the time that used to be spent at the 7 Pools is now split between this other waterfall location and the black sand beach park of Waianapanapa, a place guests often said they wished they could have spent more time.

Touring the road to Hana with Valley Isle Excursions

The road to Hana is a very twisty journey through a lush rainforest with beautiful waterfalls, valleys, black sand beaches and much more to explore. It’s a picturesque day of adventure that’s one of the must-do activities of Maui .

valley isle excursions road to hana

As we were planning our excursions for the NCL Pride of America cruise around Hawaii , we thought it would be fun to tour the road to Hana again. We’ve tour the road several times on our own and also took a small, independent tour, but not taken a tour with one of the van tour companies.

Note that Valley Isle Excursions will also pick up from hotels and condos, too.

valley isle excursions road to hana

I Survived the Road to Hana, Thanks to Valley Isle Excursions

Views along the Road to Hana with Valley Isle Excursions

We’re heading over to Maui for this post. Perhaps the island’s biggest tourist attraction is the Road to Hana. The road goes for just over 100 kilometres, but it has so many twists, turns and stops that you definitely need a full day of exploration. Once again, I opted to do a tour, because we all know driving on the other side of the road terrifies me. Plus, I don’t think I’d even drive on such a twisted highway in Australia.

The team at Valley Isle Excursions are Road to Hana pros. They have several small tour buses doing the route every day. The end stretch of the road is unpaved and very bumpy, so rental cars companies don’t insure for this trek. In doing a tour, I was able to fully complete the entire Road to Hana, which definitely feels like an accomplishment. Here’s a rundown on the sights I saw and my highlights.

Pick up and breakfast

I was picked up at a hotel next to my hostel again, at 7am. Our tour bus was small, with just 10 people (all Americans except for me). I liked the small size, and I honestly don’t think a large bus could handle the Road to Hana anyway. We were all staying on Maui’s southside and our first stop was for breakfast. I actually didn’t realise this was included, but I hadn’t eaten anything beforehand so it worked out well. Breakfast included fruit, pastries, juice and scones.

Road to Hana

Following breakfast we began our journey on the Road to Hana. We drove through Paia, which looks like a great village. Our driver, Barry has lived on the island for many years, so he’s absolutely full of interesting Hawaii and Maui knowledge. He points us the best places to eat, including Willie Nelson’s favourite restaurant . As we drive along the Hana Highway, Barry pulled over whenever he could for photo opportunities, which was appreciated. The area’s actually a rainforest, which receives rainfall most nights. It was lush, that’s for sure, and full of pretty waterfalls.

Our first major stop was Keanae Peninsula . The area’s black lava rocks — from Haleakala Crater’s lava flow a few hundred years ago — looked so beautiful juxtaposed against the North Shore’s crashing blue sea. There’s also an old stone church in the peninsula, and for some reason looking at it from afar, with the mountains in the background, I instantly thought of Jurassic Park. As you do.

Wai’anapanapa State Park

The next stop on our tour was Maui’s Black Sand Beach , which is a very sacred place for Hawaiians. The beach is made up of black sand and black pebbles. It looked like a beautiful spot to swim, if we had more time. I found myself once again thinking this area remind me of someplace else (I have no idea why). But with its deep blue sea and lush green coastline, I was transported back to Bali, and more specifically Uluwatu. I actually found myself thinking a lot about Bali on this trip.

We drove through the tiny town of Hana on our way to lunch. We were served a picnic-style lunch, which includes barbeque chicken, vegetarian pasta, garden salad and rolls. It was perfect and the setting, surrounded by a plethora of tropical flowers, wasn’t half bad either.

Oheo Gulch Pools

These pools are usually a perfect place for swimming, but not on the day we visited. The immense amount of rain the area had received turned the pools a lovely shade of brown. However, the coastline around the pools wasn’t awful to look at. The walk to the pools and back was also a good way to get some exercise, when sitting on a bus for the majority of the day.

Palapala Ho’omau Church

Known primarily as the final resting place of Charles Lindbergh, I honestly didn’t have a clue who Lindbergh was until Barry told me his story. But all of the Americans on the bus seemed to know about him, so I was definitely the odd one out. The church was built in 1857 out of limestone coral and it’s located at Kipahulu Point. It’s a peaceful area along the Road to Hana, and I can see why Lindbergh chose this spot.

On a side note…after I visited Maui and was at home watching  Timeless , they did an episode featuring Lindbergh. At least I knew who he was at this time.

Road to Hana 2.0

Now it’s the fun part. The landscape changes dramatically on this unpaved section of the Road to Hana. This is the Kaupo area , and you go from rainforests to barren paddocks and volcanic rock. It was extremely bumpy, but once again Barry allowed us to get out when possible and take photos of the landscape. Once the lush vegetation is removed from the picture, you can also get uninterrupted coastline views along this section of the road too. We stopped one last time before heading back to our side of the island.

We ended up doing a massive circle of the island in 10 hours; just missing the west side of Kihei and Wailea. On the drive back we could see whales in the water, which was just so cool. I followed this with a whale watching tour   the next day.

One of the things I loved about this tour in particular was the extras. There was an esky (cooler) filled with soft drinks (soda/pop) and water, which we could help ourselves to throughout the day. There were plenty of (clean) restroom breaks, plus we received a delicious breakfast and lunch, including macadamia chocolates as an after lunch treat. Valley Isle Excursions are pros, and it shows. I highly recommend this tour, especially because the company literally goes that extra mile on the Road to Hana.
