U2 Tops Box Office as Highest Grossing Tour of 2024 With Sphere Residency

Liz Foster

U2's residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas is the highest grossing tour of the year, thus far, according to a mid-year report from Billboard Boxscore. The mid-year report covers the time between Oct. 1, 2023, to March 30, 2024.

U2's shows have brought in a whopping $231.5 million from 38 concerts of a 40-show run. The first two shows of U2's residency at the Sphere were on Sept. 29 and Sept. 30, prior to the chart period's beginning. The 38 shows boasted an attendance of 630,000.

Prices for U2's shows at the Sphere began in the $400 to $500 range, but after quickly selling out, resale tickets ran fans anywhere from $800 to over $2,500. In May 2023, the group extended their residency, citing that there had been more than 1 million ticket requests during their one-location tour.

P!nk came in at No 2., grossing $196 million between 42 shows. Her concerts had the largest number of attendees of the list, a staggering 1.4 million. In 2023, she grossed a total of $232 million.

Latin pop group RBD trails only slightly behind with 1.3 million attendees between their 35 shows. Coldplay and Luis Migel also broke the 1 million attendee mark.

Madonna, who recently played a show in Rio de Janeiro that an estimated 1.5 million people attended , fell into the third spot on the list, grossing $190.6 million.

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra performed the highest number of shows, holding 104 concerts during the six-month period, averaging to 1.75 shows per day.

Peso Pluma rounded out the list of top 50 highest grossing tours, bringing in $22.1 million across10 shows with 206,000 attendees. Other acts on the list include Mariah Carey, Doja Cat, Fall Out Boy and $uicideboy$.

This mid-year list notably does not include the ongoing European leg of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, nor her 26 performances earlier this year in South America, Australia and Asia. The pop star did not report the data to Billboard Boxscore during this time period.

In 2023, the massive Eras Tour was the highest-grossing tour of the year, bringing in over $1 billion - the first in history to do so - with over 4.3 million tickets sold. Swift also earned roughly $200 million between merchandise sales and The Eras Tour movie. The average original ticket price for the tour was nearly $240, but resale tickets ranged from $500 to a whopping $7,000 .

Beyoncé's Renaissance Tour took the No. 2 spot, grossing $579 million; the tour's companion film earned another $44.4 million worldwide. Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Coldplay and Harry Styles completed the top five, earning a combined $995 million.

Live Nation was deemed the Top Promotor of the midyear chart, grossing $2.8 billion. Live Nation and Ticketmaster are in the midst of a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Justice Department, who argue that the ticketing giants violated antitrust laws. AEG, the promoter behind Swift's Eras Tour, took the No. 2 spot.

U2 set to make more money per show than any Las Vegas artist in history

U2 could surpass Adele in the highest per-appearance ever for a Vegas series.

Bono speaks with Cathedral Canon historian Jon Meacham at the Washington National Cathedral on ...

U2 will make at least $1 million per show at the MSG Sphere — and that’s before they sell a single zipper-hoodie with the “Achtung Baby” image.

U2 plans to open its “U2: UV Achtung Baby” production in Las Vegas this fall, the dates expected to be Sept. 29-30. The series (a launch and not a residency) will run six non-consecutive weekends, 12 shows total.

According to published reports, and those familiar with the band’s plans, U2 will earn 90 percent of the face value of tickets sold, which is expected to clear at least $1 million per performance and $12 million overall. And that is a very safe, conservative assessment.

By comparison, Adele has reportedly commanded $1.2 million per show at the Colosseum, Bruno Mars $1 million per show at Dolby Live, and Lady Gaga $800,000 per show, also at Dolby Live. U2 should surpass all those superstars in per-show earnings.

With an average face-value price of, say, $100 per ticket at the Sphere’s 17,500-seat capacity, U2 would make $1,575,000 gross per show. I’m actually anticipating $500 for seats in the front to $100 at the back. If U2 sells out at those price points, the band’s take could easily double or even triple.

Those figures are applied to tickets sold by Ticketmaster, not listed by secondary brokers. So, the band would not get a percentage of a ticket listed at (for example) $15,000 on StubHub.

But predicting what fans will pay through the Ticketmaster Verified Fan process is similar to figuring out what room rates on the Strip will be over a given weekend. Dynamic prices adjust according to market demand.

In this arrangement, the Sphere would keep the remaining 10-percent of face-value ticket revenue, most of the service and handling fees on every ticket. That figure would be very lucrative for a show that would sell out every night. The venue would also collect a healthy percentage of merchandise sales.

I’ve been using my abacus to figure out how the $2.2 billion venue makes a healthy profit just from the U2 shows, and falling short. There is reportedly immense pressure on the Sphere team to open in September, with Lucas Watson exiting his position as the venue’s president last week.

But where the Sphere would make bank is with a naming sponsor, which could reportedly be worth more than $100 million. And for any company out there looking to make history on the Strip, opportunity knocks.

Still dancing

Column friend Norm Johnson turned 90 this week, marking the event Wednesday night at the Italian American Club Showroom. Johnson wasn’t even the oldest person in the room. I heard later one guest was 103.

Johnson moved to Vegas in 1965 as a reporter for the Las Vegas Sun. Two years later he co-founded the Mint 400 off-road race. Johnson was also a fine dancer in his younger days prior to moving to VegasVille. He was a backing dancer in “Jailhouse Rock,” alongside Elvis himself.

Johnson’s “audition” was actually winning a dance contest at a club on the Sunset Strip in L.A. Choreographer Alex Romero, who was working with Presley, caught Johnson’s victorious moves and invited him into the “Jailhouse Rock” cast.

“That’s the only reason I was in the movie, because the choreographer happened to be there that night,” Johnson said Friday.

Johnson also recalled that Presley twisted his ankle during filming and had to sit for a week.

“Elvis couldn’t dance, but we rehearsed a little and he watched us,” Johnson said. “But he paid us, in full, for an entire week when we really didn’t do any work. He didn’t have to do that. He was a great guy to work with.” Presley himself choreographed the iconic “Jailhouse Rock” scene, and paid his dancers $90 apiece — about $950 in today’s money — while he healed.

Jackson show to The Orleans

“MJ The Evolution” has survived the closing of Mosaic On The Strip last summer to move into a four-show run at The Orleans Showroom. The dates are March 20, 23, 24 and 25. The show performed what I heard was a pretty wild showcase in November at Vu Studios in Las Vegas. Michael Firestone continues his uncanny portrayal of Jackson. Guitar great Christian Brady leads the fiery band.

Raiding the Hard Rock Cafe

Raiding the Rock Vault celebrates its 10th anniversary in VegasVille in March. The show is relocating to Hard Rock Live on the Strip. RV has played the Las Vegas Hilton/LVH, Tropicana, Vinyl at Hard Rock Hotel (now Oxford 24 at Virgin Hotel today), Club 172 at the Rio, and currently the Duomo, also at the Rio. It was Ozzy Osbourne who famously cried out, “You can’t kill rock ‘n’ roll!” He could have been talking about Raiding the Rock Vault, helmed by the tireless producer Harry Cowell.

What Works In Vegas

Human Nature at South Point Showroom. The Aussie threesome of Andrew and Mike Tierney and Toby Allen are listed on Ticketmaster for nine additional dates this year, running Sept. 5-7, Oct. 3-5 and Nov. 14-16.

Those tickets are available at noon Pacific on March 7. All showtimes are 6:30 p.m. The dates are in addition to shows in March, April, May and June. We missed them this month, but not everyone did. HN typically sells out the venue.

U2 Tops List of Highest-Grossing Live Acts

Concert earnings.

Despite the fact that streaming services helped the music industry stop the decade-long decline and return to growth in recent years, live concerts remain the bread and butter for many artists. While playing concerts is particularly important for lesser-known musicians in order to make ends meet, some of the world’s biggest artists also make the lion’s share of their income by playing live in front of millions of people around the world.

According to concert tracking website Pollstar , the top 100 tours worldwide generated more than $5.5 billion in ticket revenue last year, up from just $3.2 billion in 2010. Over the past decade, artists like U2 and Ed Sheeran played record-breaking world tours, selling millions of tickets and generating hundreds of millions in ticket sales.

As the following chart shows, U2 even managed to crack the billion-dollar milestone over the past decade, selling 9.3 million tickets for 255 shows in 141 cities. With box office earnings of $929 and $922 million, respectively, The Rolling Stones and Ed Sheeran complete the top 3 in Pollstar’s ranking of the highest-grossing artists.

U2 tops highest-paid UK and Irish bands earning a staggering figure

U2 have topped the list as the highest-earning band from Ireland or the UK last year. Bono and his bandmates have raked in over $127.9m from 23 gigs in Las Vegas , playing to a crowd of 382,000 fans.

They're nearly $38.5m ahead of their closest competitors, Coldplay , in live performance earnings. Chris Martin's band has earned close to $102.9m a figure that doesn't even include their recent headline set at Glastonbury .

This impressive sum was made from selling around 730,000 tickets. After these two, there's a significant gap in earnings among Irish and UK acts. Niall Horan also makes the top 10 with earnings nearing $13m.

U2 named highest earning musicians of last year with £89 million made from their Joshua Tree tour

bono-ed-sheeran-katy-perry.jpg

The drinks are on U2 for the foreseeable: The band have been named the highest earning musicians of last year in Forbes magazine's annual rich list.

The quartet collectively raked in £89 million in pre-tax earnings in 2017, thanks to their Joshua Tree tour and current world tour. The figure places them at Number 6 in the overall top ten.

That number is dwarfed by boxer Floyd Mayweather, who earned £215 million last year and takes first place in Forbes' 100 highest-paid celebrities . George Clooney finishes second on £180 million thanks to the sale of his tequila company Casamigos, while Kylie Jenner places third with a cool £125.5 million from her cosmetics empire and social media endorsements.

As for music acts, Coldplay are seventh and will split the £87 million made last year following their worldwide Head Full Of Dreams Tour, while Ed Sheeran is ninth and the highest solo earning musician on the list with £83 million earned. Ed scored last year's biggest album with Divide, while Shape Of You became Spotify's most played track of all time.

Katy Perry was last year's highest paid female musician, placing nineteenth on the overall list with earnings of £62.5 million thanks in part to her Witness world tour.

Forbes' Top 10 highest earning musicians of 2017 are:

1. U2 - £89m 2. Coldplay - £87m 3. Ed Sheeran - £83m 4. Bruno Mars - £75m 5. Katy Perry - £62.5m 6. Taylor Swift - £60m 7. Jay-Z - £57.5m 8. Guns N' Roses - £53.5m 9. Sean Combs - £48m 10. Beyonce - £45m

JYP Entertainment Revenue Sinks 37% on Slow Q2 Album Release Schedule

Streaming gained modestly, but a lack of big releases from bread-and-butter artists like Twice and Stray Kids caused album sales to fall a whopping 82%.

By Glenn Peoples

NAYEON

An absence of major artist activities caused revenue at K-pop company JYP Entertainment to fall 36.9% to 95.7 billion won ($69.8 million) from the same period a year ago, the company announced Tuesday (Aug. 13).

Although JYP saw gains from global streaming, album sales declined 82% to 13.6 billion won ($9.9 million), and albums’ share of the overall revenue mix declined to 14% from 49%. That led to a 51% drop in revenue in JYP’s home market of South Korea. Elsewhere, Japan dropped just 7% while China, a relatively small part of the company’s overall business, improved 5%. All other markets dropped 32% to 29.7 billion won ($21.6 million).

HYBE Set Quarterly Revenue Record, Net Income Dropped Sharply in Q2

Trending on billboard.

Advertising revenue improved 29% to 9.2 billion won ($6.7 million) while concerts fell 3% to 14.0 billion won ($10.2 million). Consolidated operating profit slipped 79.6% to 9.3 billion won ($6.8 million) and net profit plummeted 95.0% to 1.2 billion won ($933,000).

Looking ahead, Twice conducted a stadium tour in Japan in July and has “various group/unit activities planned” for the second half of the year, according to JYP’s investor presentation . JYP forecasts 130 concerts in 2024, down from 141 in 2023, but it expects larger tours in Japan will help increase total audience to 1.9 million from 1.4 million a year earlier.

The third quarter will also be impacted by a new Stray Kids EP, Ate , which was released July 19. The video for the set’s leadoff single, “Chk Chk Boom,” boasts cameos by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman , the lead actors from box office hit Deadpool & Wolverine .
