Gladys Knight Still Has A Licence To Thrill

Jul 1, 2024 | Review Beat

Now in her 80th year on this planet, the gospel and soul legend still has what it takes to belt out her classics, if her current UK tour is anything to go by…

BOURNEMOUTH BIC – REVIEW By Ian Woolley

Showing no signs of that amazing and powerful voice diminishing, the seven-time GRAMMY winner these days delivers her songs with love.

For this tour, Gladys is joined by special guest Mica Millar. Millar has quickly become one of the UK’s most exciting soul stars. Last year, she picked up Jazz FM’s Soul Act Of The Year Award and has supported artists including Lionel Richie and Gregory Porter. She has an upcoming solo tour towards the end of the year and you can see why.

“I love you all”, she announces as she walks onto the stage to rapturous applause. Dressed in a long, bright red flowing dress (with a matching sequinned top), the Georgia-born singer’s smile filled the arena, and the crowd lapped it up as soon as she hit her first note of a medley of “Taste Of Bitter Love”, “Nitty Gritty” and the Jackson 5’s “Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground”.

Her nine-piece entourage included (to her right) three female backing vocalists who complimented her voice through every number. Behind her, the horns and strings were supplied by two keyboard players with a drummer paired with a multi-instrumental percussionist. Both bass and lead guitarists supplied the essential riffs that accompanied those funky numbers.

“Baby Don’t Change Your Mind” and “Love Overboard” before a seated Miss Knight brought the house down with an emotional rendition of “Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me”, followed by “Come Back And Finish What You Started” and “Imagination”. From the opening familiar chords of “A Licence To Kill” (the 007 soundtrack lead single from 1989), the arena whooped with delight. Although it was her last UK hit single (where it only reached no.6),

Miss Knight delivers every note to perfection in her own style, sending those high notes into orbit. It’s a ‘chill down your spine’ moment.

Next up was “I Heard It Through The Grapevine,” delivered in an R’n’B style by the first artist to record the Barrett Strong & Norman Whitfield Motown classic. She is a masterclass of pain and suffering through her chosen ballads, yet she still manages to lift one’s spirit with her upbeat numbers. Returning to two of her 70s hits, “Neither One Of Us” and “The Way We Were—Try To Remember,” you couldn’t hear a pin drop.

Gladys Knight wows the crowd (photo credit Quiz Britain)

“I love you too,” she replies when someone in the audience tells her that they love her. Finishing with a rousing gospel medley taking her back to her childhood days (*where she won many a talent contest before she turned ten), her final parting gift was “Midnight Train To Georgia”. All though her pips may be long gone, her voice holds those notes with tried and tested perfection.

“Will you run for the presidency?” a quip shouts from the back of the audience, causing everyone, including her and her band, to roar with laughter.

In her long and successful career, Knight has recorded more than 38 albums, including four solo albums during the past decade alone. As she joins that elite group of artists in the ’80s Club’ who are still performing, her powerful vocal chords show no sign of calling it a day.

This talented lady doesn’t need an encore and as her bio proudly boasts, “The great ones endure, and Gladys Knight has long been one of the greatest.” Witnessing the standing ovation at the end of her show, her fans will undoubtedly agree.

The UK tour runs until July 8th, followed by a US tour in August (Tickets available at the usual ticket outlets).

LIVE REVIEW: GLADYS KNIGHT Farewell Tour – Perth Riverside Theatre, 19th March 2024

Riverside theatre, perth - 19th march 2024.

20 March 2024 Paul Diggins

gladys knight farewell tour

There are many singers who can rightly be described as ‘Stars’ but far fewer as ‘Superstars’. Gladys Knight fits firmly into the latter category and her tour de force of a show at the Riverside Theatre Perth Convention Centre on Tuesday night merely emphasized that. The title ‘Empress of Soul’ conferred on her is well deserved. With an oh so tight backing band and three excellent top rank back up singers how could the title ever be relinquished. Simply it can’t.

The great ones endure and Gladys Knight has long been one of the greatest. Very few singers over the last fifty years have matched her unassailable artistry. This true legend of the stage and screen has enjoyed #1 hits in Pop, Gospel, R&B and Adult Contemporary and has triumphed in film, television and live performance.

Beginning her musical career at the age of 4 performing gospel music at Church, to performing alongside her siblings in the music group, Gladys Knight & The Pips, the naturally gifted Gladys was a superstar in the making. Following the success of the group, with an array of chart-topping hits across the 60s, 70s & 80s including ‘Every Beat of My Heart’ ‘Letter Full of Tears’ ‘I Heard it Through the Grapevine’ and ‘If I Were Your Woman’, Gladys went on to have one of the most coveted musical careers in history.

Knight went on to record more than 38 albums over the years, including four solo albums during the past decade: “ Good Woman ” (1991); “ Just for You ” (1994); the inspirational “ Many Different Roads ” (1999); and “ At Last ” (2001). “At Last” showed the world that she still has what it takes to record a hit album, employing the talents of contemporary producers like Randy Jackson, Gary Brown and James D.C. Williams III, Jon John, Jamey Jaz, Keith Thomas, Tom Dowd and Tiger Roberts.

Gladys’ love for the stage still remains strong. Consistently touring across 2022 and 2023, the singer has a huge 2024 ahead, with an array of headline shows already lined up across the US before heading down under in March.

“A career-spanning set from the empress of soul – the star is in outstanding voice as she pours her whole heart into hits ranging from the Motown era to her 1980s Bond theme” – ★★★★ The Guardian

With a musical career spanning multiple decades, Knight has also devoted much of her life to humanitarian and philanthropic endeavours, working with the American Diabetes Association, the American Cancer Society, the Minority AIDS Project, amFAR and Crisis Intervention, and The Boys and Girls Club. She has been honoured by numerous organisations as well, including the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), B’Nai Brith, and is a recent recipient of BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

With a legendary status, consistently proving that her stage presence, live performance and artistry never falters, the great Gladys Knight returns to perform a string of unmissable headline shows across Australia and New Zealand in March and April 2024 – a once in a lifetime opportunity for fans of soul music.

The Farewell Tour - Gladys Knight’s Final Sydney Performance

The Farewell Tour: A bittersweet moment for Fans Across Australia. Yet, it stands as a magnificent tribute to the final Australian performance of the seven-time Grammy winner, aptly hailed as the 'Empress of Soul.' At the age of 79, Gladys Knight continues to enchant audiences with her undeniable talent.

The evening kicked off with Hayley Teal and her guitar player, Mark , who effortlessly set the tone for the great musical journey we were about to embark on. Her performance was a beautiful blend of covers, including “Always be my baby” by one of Hayley’s influences, Mariah Carey, and Shania Twain’s “You’re still the one”. Ending with an original piece, "Another Good Reason," she gently nudged the audience into the right frame of mind, warming us up for the main act. The crowd's applause for Teal wasn't just polite; it was a recognition of her talent, a perfect prelude to the legend that followed.

gladys knight farewell tour

Let’s take a minute to talk about this legend. Gladys Knight, as she reminds the audience later in the night, has been performing since the age of four. Alongside her siblings and cousins as Gladys Knight & The Pips, she soared to incredible heights - becoming a seven-time Grammy Award winner with timeless hits like "If I Were Your Woman" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." Her journey, rich with chart-topping singles and albums, not only highlights her exceptional talent but also celebrates the harmonious legacy of The Pips, whose contributions have been pivotal in shaping the sound of soul music.

After a little bit of an extended intermission that saw classic tunes fill the room, the lights dimmed and the band took their places. The lighting cast a canopy of soft blues, yellows, and whites over the stage, creating a setting reminiscent of a Sunday service. This turned out to be the perfect setting because Auntie Gladys definitely took us to church!

Led onto the stage amid a wave of applause, dressed in a chic blue suit, Gladys Knight, elegant as always, stood as a silent reminder that time spares no one, not even legends. Yet, as soon as she began to sing, any thoughts of age vanished. Almost 80, and she commanded the stage as if time had stood still, her voice as powerful and soul-stirring as ever, a living testament to why she's revered as the "Empress of Soul." Her performance showed the audience that true talent is timeless.

The setlist journeyed through Knight’s iconic hits, each performance interwoven with personal anecdotes and expressions of gratitude. Her rendition of "Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me" pulled at heartstrings, while the soulful "Licence to Kill" and the lively "I've Got to Use My Imagination" showcased the breadth of her musical prowess. The gospel covers, "Stand" and "Take Me to the King," transformed the concert into a spiritual experience, where Knight and her backing vocalist, all standing around her, put on a truly touching performance.

gladys knight farewell tour

Knight's performance was nothing short of a masterclass. Her interactions, filled with genuine warmth and occasional cheekiness, broke down any barrier between the stage and the seats. She wasn't just performing; she was sharing, conversing, and indeed, spreading love in a way that only someone with her grace and experience could.

The band, made up of three backing vocalists, two keyboardists, two drummers, a bassist and guitarist, were also in fine form, their skill and synchronicity with Knight underscoring the performance's emotional depth and musicality. Particularly noteworthy was their collaboration on "Save the Overtime (For Me)," a moment that highlighted the ensemble's cohesion and versatility.

The evening concluded with "Midnight Train to Georgia," a fitting finale that encapsulated the concert's nostalgic yet timeless quality. The standing ovation that followed was a tribute not just to the night's performance but to Knight's enduring legacy.

The evening's close was marked not by the returning of lights but by the warmth of gratitude—a bouquet of flowers from a fan, a symbol of the deep, enduring connection between Gladys Knight and those whose lives she has touched with her music. It was a reminder that while tours end, the music and the memories created resonate forever. This was more than just a goodbye tour; it was a thank you note in the form of music, and man, was I glad to be there.

Gladys Knight is a soul singer born on the 28th of May 1944, hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, USA. She has been consistently writing, recording and performing for over 60 years, making her professional debut in 1953.

“Empress of Soul”. You can keep your “King of Rock’n’Roll”, “Lord of the Dance”, and “Pop Princess”, is there a nickname in music that sounds as deliciously regal as “Empress of Soul”? I really don’t think there is. It’s the kind of name that’s earned, not bestowed, and when the woman it describes is Gladys Knight, there’s no-one who it fits better.

Her first taste of fame came when she was a mere seven years of age. She won a TV Talent show contest, namely Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour in 1952, the following year she formed a musical group with her brother, sister and cousins who christened themselves The Pips. By the end of the decade they were touring together and they were signed to Motown by 1966.

At this point in time it was rare for a band to be so incredibly experienced live. Even The Beatles, famed for cutting their teeth in their residencies in Hamburg and the Cavern, had only spent three years regularly performing live. Knight and The Pips however, had over a decade’s experience by this point and it showed.

According to her memoirs, she and The Pips were kicked off a tour opening for Diana Ross and The Supremes because they were upstaging Ross night after night and getting a better reception from the crowd. While arguably a second tier Motown act they still had considerable success on the label, with songs like the first released version of “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” and the Grammy winning "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)".

Come 1973 however, they left for a better deal at Buddha records, where her first single was the monster hit “Midnight Train to Georgia”. Worked out pretty well for her, eh? It wasn’t just the music world she was conquering, as Knight made her acting debut in the 1976 film Pipe Dreams, that saw her get a Golden Globe nomination for Best New Actress.

Since then she’s recorded with the likes of Stevie Wonder and Elton John, along with recording the theme for the 1989 James Bond film Licence To Kill. While her work today might focus more on her church and philanthropy than that electrifying voice, if anyone’s earned the right to take a break now and again, it’s her. Also, if she does take to the road once more, you can bet that she’s be absolutely peerless.

Live reviews

i had looked forward to this event for months and had 3rd row orchestra pit seats.the Fox theater said show at 7pm period. the fox is appallingly poorly run theses days. upon arrival at 6pm with tickets, we were greeted with lines everywhere, going around the block in all directions. after waiting in various lines and asking enough attendants i was finally directed to proper line and stood and waited until 720p to get inside. Miss Knight was already on stage performing and there were still HUNDREDS of patrons outside in lines. this is INEXCUSABLE especially after paying over $350 for 2 tickets & $20 for parking.

we did actually get to see and hear Miss Knight sing about 4 songs by time we were shown to our seats. Miss Knight apologized for being a bit horse from cold or allergies but the lady sounded wonderful & my date said he could have listened to her sing all night, to which i agreed. she is a rue motown legend and phenomenal vocalist. and she is stunning. it was amazing to be able to see her so close from our seats and finally hear her perform in person. its a shame that the Fox can't seem to run a show properly anymore at any cost. the same was true when i saw Miss Franklin there a few years ago. that was another massive clusterfuck on the part of the fox theater management but i guess they only care about the $ and not how to properly run the venue. in spite of the poor handling of patrons, the fox is the only detroit venue 1 can sometimes see such legendary performers as Miss Knight and Miss Franklin and not deal with 'arena' venues but see them in a more intimate setting. Miss Knight also did a stunning tribute to Miss Franklin that brought everyone to tears. performers and patrons deserve BETTER than the fox management seems able to or bother to deliver so unless Dame Shirley Bassie, Miss Grace Jones, Lily Tomlin or Petula Clark are booked, i think i'll skip fox concerts for now

Attended Manchester Apollo gig on Saturday 27th May 2023. Was really looking forward to this, as my wife and I had never seen her live, despite enjoying her music in the 60s and 70s (although not really listened to her more recent output). We wish we hadn't wasted our money. Her voice is still tremendous, but it was often difficult to hear it because of the overbearing band (maybe it was just poor sound engineers, but why on earth were two drummers necessary??) and also because of the raucous screeches from supposed "fans" during the quieter moments - these thoughtless people just spoil it for everyone else. But the main problem was the venue - doors opened at 7pm, and we arrived in time to take our very uncomfortable seats (the temporary ones in the stalls, with insufficient leg-room) at 7.30. There was no support act, no announcements, no notices of show-times posted on the doors/walls, and we waited until 9.15, over one and a half hours, for a performance that lasted one hour ten minutes. We were relieved there was neither the customary introduction of the band members, nor an encore (although I had been hoping to hear my favourite, and surely her most iconic song "Just Walk in My Shoes" and would have appreciated that in an encore - but no such luck!). A huge disappointment.

Affectionately known as the empress of soul, there are few artists who had a career with as respected longevity and success as Gladys Knight. The seven time Grammy winner is now into her 70s yet her passion for music and understanding of the fanbase means she continues to play shows from time to time to indulge her true love and allow audiences to hear the irresistible tones of 'Midnight Train to Georgia' and 'I Feel a Song (In My Heart)' in a live setting.

Gladys's influence has been felt in the world of R & B and soul every decade since she first released 'Miss Gladys Knight' and therefore there is a sharp age gap in attendance this evening. They all explode in complete elation as the lady steps out onto stage in a manner of total unassuming quality, hardly like the divas of today. From the moment she sings the silky opening note of 'I Want You' the crowds are captivated and the night only improves from there. Knight includes all of the hits to please her loyal following and shows off her vocal capabilities on shattering high notes and soulful skits during 'Let's Stay Together'. It is 'Heard It Through the Grapevine' that receives the largest applause as this song is completely timeless and the performance is flawless.

Gladys Knight is by far one of my favorite performers. As a kid growing up I remember listening to the sounds of her soulful voice singing Midnight Train to Georgia. That song always stuck in my head making me think one day a train to Georgia wouldn't be a bad thing to train. I think she sure could have sold millions of tickets for the train company singing that song.

It wasn't until I seen her in person that I really appreciated all of her music and singing ability. Starting from her unforgettable smile ending with her humble ways, I enjoyed every bit of her. You can hear her voice with such clarity and range over the mic. In person her voice is beautiful sweeping you in and filling the venue with hometown soul. Blues and Jazz with a soulful mix is what you feel at her concerts.

She also gives the history behind some of the songs she sings like when and where it was recorded. She just goes a step beyond to make sure you take in all that is offered. If she comes back on tour or does any shows in the near future I'll be sure to get a ticket and enjoy the old classic sounds of Motown.

At 71 Gladys Knight still delivers. She has had so many hits and sung so many magical songs during her long career that it was impossible for her to squeeze all of them into one show, but she gave us a great selection. She also introduced her versions of surprisingly contemporary material such as Sam Smith's Stay With Me and Pharell's Happy.

The band was terrific, as you'd expect, and the four additional vocalist deserve a special mention - they really were in a class of their own.

She was unexpectedly joined on stage by her elder brother Bubba, who did a very entertaining semi-comic song and dance routine giving Gladys a little break.

The only thing about an otherwise great show that was a little disappointing was her decision to end it with a hymn. She is a religious woman and this kind of ending may go down well with American audiences but it really didn't work here in Britain. Had she simply finished on the previous song, Neither One Of Us, the audience would have gone home happier.

Gladys Knight exceeded all expectations. Her voice was so strong, smooth and soulful. She looked great , had a phenomenal backup band with amazing back up singers. Would love to see her in a venue where the audience were standing as that voice is timeless and a younger generation would also be blown away. Gladys sounded better than her recordings. Pity someone like Nile Rodgers doesn't produce a recording for her as nobody I've seen through the years has got that quality of vocals or owns the stage with genuine superstar presence.

The concert was everything I hoped it would be. My friend and I had an amazing night, Gladys and her backing singers were great, sound quality was spot on and she mixed up old songs (Midnight train to Georgia) with newer covers (Sam Smith's Stay with me) She got us all on our feet (Baby dont change your mind) and tears flowing (The way we were). She talked to us (the audience) as if we were old friends and still has so much vocal range and energy. So "glad" I saw her live at last. Long may she reign: The Empress of Soul!!!

Having been a fan of Gladys Knight and the Pips since the 70s, to finally hear the Queen of Soul, live and up close was absolutely amazing. What a wonderful performance filled with many favourites and a sprinkling of new contempory love songs kept the audience mesmerised. Gladys Knights’ powerful voice accompanied by very talented musicians and supporting singers made for a truely memorable experience.Love, Love, Love it

Gladys is a super performer and has a great rapport with the audience. Her performance and choice of music was excellent and her voice is still very strong. This is my third time to see her so it goes without saying I love her music and the heart that’s all part of it. Her concert is a treat for anyone. She looked very lovely. God bless Gladys and thanks for so many years. Love you

The lady rules, to begin with, she's beautiful, gracious, grateful and very witty, and then let's talk about that voice, a voice like an angel come down from Heaven. It was a first class show all the way. And her backup singers and musicians were just as talented as she. And on a last note, I just think her name is beautiful, you'll wonder why right? Loved every minute of it!

Review | Gladys Knight's Farewell tour showcases a diverse career

Gladys Knight Farewell Tour  | Riverside Theatre | 19th March 2024 | ★ ★ ★ ½

Gladys Knight, dubbed the Empress of Soul, is taking her final bows as she takes her Farewell Tour around Australia showcasing decades of hits that span many different genres.

gladys knight farewell tour

The tour’s Australian run began on Tuesday night at Perth’s Riverside Theatre . First up local musician Howie Morgan entertained the crowd with his original songs and a selection of well known covers including James Taylor’s  You’ve Got a Friend  and Bill Wither’s  Lovely Day.

Knight was backed by a six piece band that included a drummer and a percussionist, two keyboard players and two guitarists. She was joined on stage by three backing singers who oddly performed most of the show sitting down, which made it feel very sedate.

Just weeks away from her 80th birthday Knight is bidding farewell to life on the road, so this was for many in the audience the first and last chance to see a singer whose career has spanned seven decades.

gladys knight farewell tour

While Gladys Knight began her career on the Motown label alongside Diana Ross and The Supremes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, Smokie Robinson and The Temptations. Her greatest run of success came in the 1970’s singing smooth ballads and disco soul. In the 1980’s she embraced funk sounds and later recorded standards, jazz and gospel.

As the show began Knight’s voice was lost in the mix of a loud band and powerful backing singers. It was clear watching that she singing her heart out, and could certainly hold a note for an impressive amount of time, but from our viewpoint it was hard to hear the famous singer amongst all that was sonically going on around her.

Dressed in a three-quarter length black jacket, crisp white shirt and teetering on stiletto the singer spent the show heading from one side of the stage to the other, having short exchanges with nearby audience members, sharing that ‘loves the church thang’, and ‘that love is the most importance force in the world.’

But you got the impression she could have been in any city, and maybe she wasn’t even sure where tonight’s tour schedule had taken her. It felt like this was yet another show, in a long line of shows, slowly winding down to it’s finale. Singing to a half full theatre on a Tuesday night in Perth wasn’t taking Gladys Knight out of a high.

The song selection included her 1969 hit  The Nitty Gritty,  which morphed into The Jacksons’ late 70’s disco hit  Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)  and 1961’s  Every Beat of My Heart  was also included.

Love Overboard,  a song written for Knight by Atlantic Star’s Reggie Calloway provided a slice of late 80’s funk groove.  Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me  was warmly welcomed by the crowd.

A rendition of the Luther Vandross classic  Never Enough  was filled with energy as the trio of backing singers joined Knight centre stage, and there was swooning and awe as the singer launched into Barbara Streisand’s  The Way We Were.

Neither One of Us (Wants to be the First to Say Goodbye ) also got cheers of enthusiasm from the crowd, and  I Heard It Through the Grapevine  was recognisable from the moment the first notes were struck.

The show ended with what is potentially the song most associated with Knight,  Midnight Train to Georgia. A faster version than expected, the train had build up some steam and we were heading off fast. As Knight sang the song’s refrain of “I’ve got to go”, she took her final bows and departed.

Amazing career, undisputable talent, muddled show.

REVIEW: Gladys Knight 2024 Farewell Tour

gladys knight farewell tour

Review by Charmaine Jones – Performance date Thursday 21 March 2024, Adelaide Festival Centre, South Australia

The electricity in the audience was palpable. The anticipation, the expectation, awaiting a legend that some had followed musically for 54 years, from conversations that I had with members of the audience, who after the show were elated that they idol had delivered …

But let’s wind it back …

gladys knight farewell tour

The curtain warmer was no reflection of what was to come. It was obvious that that there was a hesitation from the audience of what the night was to bring, after the support band’s set, especially as the clock kept ticking, and Gladys was absent from the stage.

Finally, after 45 minutes, the house music, (a selection of Earth Wind and Fire, Chicago and other heavy funk/soul bands, which was a better fit for the treat ahead), diminished. The lights on the stage brightened to reveal a serious band set up.

A seperate drum and percussion ‘kit’, either side of the stage and a double keyboard Korg set up, plus a two stacked synth configuration lay smack bang, elevated in the centre of the stage.

An Electric guitarist and (what I think I could see from my stage view in the stalls), a seven string bass player, took the floor space along with three female BV’s (backing vocalists) dressed in blacks and seated on stools. Their demeanour and attitude brought peace instantly and excitement, as their years of experience in being support singers of integrity and value, rang loudly even before their mouths opened.

You could almost hear the audience breathe in the gravity of this band.

And then, Gladys was walked out, with some help, and one could hear a pin drop, in an auditorium which was sadly not at capacity for the life changing event which was about to follow.

In a canary yellow flared pant and matching peplum styled top, which clung to her figure accentuating every graceful curve, Gladys’ smile widened to reveal the whitest of teeth incased in beautiful, luscious singers lips; her hair perfectly coiffed and a rich, warm speaking voice welcomed the crowd and thanked them for their loyalty and love.

And that was just the beginning of the journey.

gladys knight farewell tour

It’s hard to explain every detail or nuance that made the experience of ‘Gladys Knight  – The Farewell Tour’,  one that every audience member will never forget.

The setlist was a definite contributor, as it hit every era of her incredible career in repertoire.

From her time with the Pip’s, to the number one hit ‘Licensed to kill’, where Gladys was a ‘bond girl, theme song, superstar’, to her loves of Soul and Gospel with tunes like Midnight Train to Georgia,  Heard it on the Grapevine and the Luther Vandross chart topper, Never Too Much, her phrasing was beautiful, gentle, sensuous and soulful. Her gospel-esque runs, rich in texture, from low F’s to her top notes, filled the space with so much clarity and authority.

At her 79 years young, Gladys proved that she was a true artist musician, and not just a lead vocalist.

Her direction and interplay with the band during her patter and their underscoring, combined with the timing of entries to tunes, was seamless. A true mastery of showmanship and star magic.

Noteable mentions was the synth player. She did not miss a note, doubling string parts and playing the appropriate lines (from more than just the seven Grammy award winnings albums recorded over the years), with precision and the perfect synthesised sound choices. Evert syncopated line was perfectly timed. Every hit and stab was pure and complementary.

The percussionist and drummer featured in the ballad ‘Neither one of us’ and their snaps, hits, groove, dynamics and backbeat, filled the pockets of air, even when they weren’t playing. Gentle and driving all at the same time, they added to the energy and breath within Gladys’ performance control – it was truly magnificent. These were the attributes which had the audience clapping, even before any song truly ended.

It was obvious that Gladys’ gospel background was at the core of her longevity, success and style, which so many have come to know and love, over her years as an artist. She was in her element within this music, the timing, the lyrics. It was like second nature, something she had done a million times in her sleep, the prompters well left aside, as lyrics came back like mantras; words hidden in her heart. As did the beautiful sentiments, penned by the famous Bergman’s and Hamlisch, in ‘The way we were’.

Gladys sat down for this iconic number, after wiping her tear-filled eyes saying “life is something amazing”.

I have never heard that song ‘preached’ before, and Barbra’s epic rendition disappeared into the distance as Gladys pulled the time feel, laying way back, stretching the phrasing, adding a key change.. the arrangement was divine and the band followed the Musical Director superfluously.

Gladys’ last note was sublime, held long and true, even as tears fell down her cheeks – joining the faces of many within the audience. Everyone could feel the lyrical power “if we had the chance to do it all again, tell me would we?”

The highlight however, (if there could be more!) was her Worship medley, which included the tune ‘Stand’, by Donnie McClurkin.

“After you’ve done all you can – you just stand” – followed by a majestic rendition of ‘Take me to the King’ where the BV’s  came off their stools, marched in a line to stand alongside Gladys, to bring a powerful, almost semi classic texture with their vocal quality and individual solos, to Gladys’ spoken and sung treatment of the tunes.

gladys knight farewell tour

Intermittently she communicated with her audience, in a Shirley Ceasar-esque manner, encouraging us and guiding us, thankful for our presence and attesting her abilities to a Higher Power.

The intensity between audience and performer was thick and deep, it was apparent that many in the room were having their own experience with not only the immeasurable Gladys Knight but with the spirit in the music.

And then – as magically as it started – it was over. A bow. One bow for a career that has spanned 71 years since her debut at age 8 with the Pips. One wave to say farewell to decades of music that changed  the way generations of people, heard and understood music.

I certainly won’t be the ‘first to say goodbye’ to this legend. In my heart or on my play list.

FIVE STARS!

Popular Massachusetts Band Charges Roughly $2 Million to Perform at Events

A few legendary bands and musical artists are on their "farewell tour." Of course when you hear the term "farewell tour" you probably automatically think that it's a marketing trick for a big cash grab. Artists like Ozzy Osbourne, Kiss, and Cher (to name a few) have announced farewell tours only to return in the future with more tours that last for several years, even decades.

2024 has more musical artists that are planning on wrapping up touring performances including Foreigner, The B-52's, and Gladys Knight but again, nobody knows if these final tours will stick or if any of these groups will come out of retirement right away which in the end may be a good thing for rabid fans of these groups.

A Massachusetts Band is Calling it Quits from Live Touring in Early 2025

Another band that is calling it quits is Boston rockers Aerosmith . The band rescheduled their "Peace Out" farewell tour a few months ago, as they were only able to play a few shows before singer Steven Tyler suffered a fractured larynx (I'm glad I saw the band live years back in Mansfield). The tour will resume on Sep. 20 and will conclude early next year. You can catch the bad boys from Boston in Massachusetts when they play TD Garden in Boston on Dec. 31.

Did You Know You Can Book Celebrities Like Aerosmith for Your Event?

If you ever wanted to know what a band of Aerosmith's caliber charges you can check out the website Celebrity Talent International and enter a name or act to get an idea. As a matter of fact, the site notes that you can hire big names to perform or speak at many types of events.

How Much Does it Cost to Book Aerosmith for an Event?

According to the website , if you want to book Aerosmith for your event, you can (depending on many factors..health, schedules etc.) but it's going to cost you around $2,000,000 and that's on the low side. Here's a quote from the site about Aerosmith booking costs:

The final Aerosmith booking price is contingent on many variables and the booking fee we may show is based on a range derived from our past experience with what will Aerosmith charge for an event. An example fee to book Aerosmith is in the starting range of $2,000,000-$2,499,999.

If you want to be entertained by live Aerosmith music at your next event, unless you have loads of money to spend and the band is willing to play an event during or beyond their farewell tour, you may just want to hire an Aerosmith tribute band. That should do the trick and save you millions.
