We chose the Tirumala Tirupathi package of Travel Woods. Everything has been in order and we are very much convinced with the tour. Our grandparents were very much contented as the tour operators were well behaved and mannered giving lot of time to for the people to worship.

Our tour with Travel Woods has been extraordinary. We chose the tour to Hyderabad, vizag and it was very cost worthy. The tour operators had made proper arrangements from the start throughout the tour.We only enjoyed and don't have anything to complain.

It was a vacation tour from Travel Woods to Bangalore, Mysore and adjacent places. We were very pleased with their hospitality. they were very patient during the sight seeing and have build a good rapport with the hotels that they don't keep you wait for the food and accommodation. We would love to tour with them again.

Travel Woods have made our vacation the one we always cherish for. It was well organised and we only had a lot of fun as the tour continued and never stopped for not knowing the route or for a bad condition of the vehicle.

Travel Woods gave us a great rate and outstanding customer service they did a outstanding Job and got a better price from them and our trip went to be a great trip.

10 things to see in Chennai

shutterstock74346139

With its age-old and firmly rooted artistic, religious and cultural traditions, Chennai encapsulates the quintessential experience of a South Indian city.

Here are the 10 things to experience in the vibrant capital of Tamil Nadu:

Stroll along marina beach.

Marina Beach. Photo by jayk67 shutterstock

Marina Beach. Photo by jayk67 / shutterstock

Marina Beach is one of India's largest urban beaches. Go there for an early morning or late evening walk. Along the main 3km-long stretch, you're bound to pass a variety of charming sights: kids flying kites or playing cricket, families out with the toddlers for some fresh sea breeze, hawkers selling all kinds of eatables, from corn cobs, nuts to tea or coffee. When you get to the southern end, head to the top of Madras Lighthouse and take in the expansive view. It lays claim to being India's only lighthouse with a lift.

San Thome Cathedral

San Thome Cathedral. Photo by Arvind Balaraman

This Roman Catholic cathedral was founded by the Portuguese in 1523, but later rebuilt by the British in 1896 in neo-Gothic style. It is believed to be the final resting place for St Thomas the Apostle, or the ‘Doubting Thomas'. The relics here include, what the church believes to be, a bone fragment from the Apostle's hand and the tip of the spear that killed him. The cathedral ranks among the most important churches in India, dedicated to a man believed to have brought Christianity to the country as early as AD 51.

Kapaleeshwar Temple

This temple is located in Mylapore, one of Chennai's most vibrant neighbourhoods. The original temple was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1566 and the current version has the characteristics common to many of Tamil Nadu's temples: the pillared mandaps, colourful gopuram and a large tank. The temple is dedicated to Shiva and is at its liveliest during the Brahmotsav festival during March and April, when the deities are carried in a procession through Mylapore's streets.

Chennai Government Museum

A complete list of dry days in India in 2024

Considered to be Chennai's best museum, the Government Museum's treasured collection includes prominent 7 century South Indian bronzes from the Pallava era. The Bronze Gallery also includes the famous Chola bronzes, which date from the 9-11 centuries. The most famous among them is the dancing Shiva or Nataraja, the cosmic dancer, and Ardhanarishvara, an androgynous manifestation of Shiva and Parvati. Spare some time for the equally impressive archaeological and anthropology galleries that traces South Indian human history, taking in everything from 2 century BC to the Vijayanagar empire in the 16 century.

Vivekananda House

For some spiritual musings on your tour, head to Vivekananda House. It celebrates the life of the philosopher and spiritual leader. The ‘wandering monk' stayed here in 1897, preaching philosophy to the huge crowds he drew. A permanent photo exhibition in the building takes us through his life and ends with a 3D reproduction of the famous 1893 event when Vivekananda spoke at the Chicago World's Parliament of Religions, spreading the message of love and world peace.

Kalakshetra Foundation

Tamil classical dance and music take center stage at Kalakshetra. Founded in 1936, the school, set amid beautiful green grounds, sponsors students from disadvantaged backgrounds. You can take one of their many art courses in kalamkari (hand-painting on textiles with vegetable dyes), textile block-printing or the handloom weaving style noted in the region called Kanchipuram.

Fort St George

An architectural reminder of the British East India Company, this fort was built in 1653, but has since been retouched a number of times. The precinct now houses Tamil Nadu's legislative assembly and secretariat. The accompanying Fort Museum will be of interest to history buffs, which displays an exhibition dedicated to Chennai's origins, the fort's history, military paraphernalia and interesting artwork from the colonial times.

Theosophical Society

Get some well-deserved rest at the international headquarters of Theosophical Society, which is spread over 100-hectares of green, peaceful grounds. The grounds demand slow exploration and are home to a mosque, church, Buddhist shrine, Zoroastrian temple and a Hindu temple. Apart from that, there is a great variety of flora and fauna and offshoots of a 450-year-old banyan tree.

Tara Books. Photo by Tara Books Facebook

Tara Books probably produce the most beautiful books in India and each one is hand-printed. Go to their Book Building showroom to buy their much-loved volumes, where you might bump into an author signing copies, or visit their printing shop AM Screens where you can watch the pages undergoing silk-screen printing and then being handbound into finished volumes—a rare glimpse into the world of book-making, from start to finish.

You can't visit a coastal city and not taste the local seafood fare. And when it comes to Chennai, no one does it better than Kayal. Located inside the plush Le Royal Meridien, it is your go-to place if you're looking to indulge. Try the classic lobster bisque or bouillabaisse soup, done exactly the way it should be. For mains, go for Chettinadu fish curry and finish off in style with the Baked Alaska, in which a tri-flavoured ice cream sits atop a freshly prepared meringue—a perfectly sweet end to your long day.

2 Days Chennai Itinerary: A Perfect Plan for Sightseeing

Budget Hotels > Travel Blog > Destinations > Chennai > 2 Days Chennai Itinerary: A Perfect Plan for Sightseeing

Located on the Coromandel Coast of India, Chennai is aptly called the Cultural Capital of South India. The city showcases its rich heritage through an amazing array of temples, churches, historical buildings, monuments, and museums. Equally fascinating are its golden sandy beaches and lip-smacking cuisine that includes fluffy idlis , aromatic filter coffee, tasty pongal , and melt-in-the-mouth masala dosas . There is no dearth of towering skyscrapers, amusement parks, shopping malls, and other modern attractions as well in Chennai, which paint the city in a very different light.

However, if you have just 48 hours to explore all these attractions, planning your sightseeing schedule could be an overwhelming task. Need some help? Here’s a comprehensive itinerary to experience the best of Chennai’s attractions in 2 days.

There’s also the  Museum Theatre, capable of accommodating up to 600 people which show enlightening historical documentaries in high-quality acoustics. The centuries old museum was established in the year 1851.It is also one of the most ancient in the world and carries the legacy of housing the vastest collection of Roman antiquities outside Europe. Among the ancient Asian heritages preserved here, the bronze statues found in Southern India, dating back to 1000 BC, are the most well-known. The museum has something to engage everyone, from art aficionados to children. While you spend time admiring Ravi Verma paintings in the arts section, the younger ones in the party can head to the children’s museum featuring vibrant visual exhibits elucidating Nature, Indian history, innovation in technology, and more. The children’s museum is presently being renovated with an air-conditioned 3D theatre equipped to play five films a day. It takes around 2-3 hours to cover a full tour of the Government Museum complex and get super-knowledgeable about all things under the sun.

Chennai is home to a colonial fort and an array of beautiful temples, monuments and churches, water sports and amusement parks, street markets and shopping centers, fine dining and luxury hotels, as well as one of the longest sandy beaches in the world.

Fort Museum

South Indian cuisine, also referred to as Dravidian, usually consists of several (mainly vegetarian) dishes eaten with steamed rice. Tamil cuisine, famous for the use of a variety of spices, recommends that one includes in a main meal all the six tastes: sweet, sour, bitter, salt, astringent and pungent. A Thali, here known as "meals", is traditionally served on a banana leaf. Look around and see how the other guests handle their leftovers and banana leaf, for good table manners. Restaurants are often referred to as a "hotel" on the signs outside, on which it usually also states if the restaurant serves meat or not. Most of the good restaurants in Chennai are located in the city’s up-market hotels, and are known for their lunch buffets. Don´t miss out on all the street stalls that serves wonderful south indian food and note that some foods are only served during breakfast whilst others only are served during night.

SaravanaBhavan/Egmore

A number of different coffee chains have established themselves in the centre of Chennai, where one usually finds coffee, tea, sandwiches and a variety of biscuits and desserts on offer. Most of the cafes open at 10 am and close at 10 pm. Each mole, or area of the city, has a number of cafés as well.

Amethyst Cafe

Bars & Nightlife

Chennai’s nightlife scene has been expanding in recent years, but still, due to regulation, most of the bars and night clubs are found in the top-end hotels. Some of the mid-range hotels also offer a drinking room where Indian beverages can be bought and consumed. Most of the bars in Chennai close at midnight.

Sera

Shopping in Chennai is easy and fun and, like in any other big city in India, one can find anything from traditional handicraft to the latest digital products. Tourists mostly buy palm leaf mats, bronze and brass castings, jewellery, stone carvings from the nearby town of Mamallapuram, ready-made or tailored clothes, and last, but not least, the famous silks from Kanchipuram. Contemporary artworks or genuine antiquities as well as different musical instruments are also items strongly sought after. There are several shopping areas, all of them located in the Egmore, Nungamabakkam or T-Nagar districts. The most popular are Theagaraya Nagar, known as T-Nagar, and Anna Salai. Georgetown, which grew around the fort, is another interesting shopping area. In the mazelike streets one can find shops specialized in selling only one type of merchandise such as fireworks in Badrian Street and paperworks in Anderson Street. Even without the shopping, a walk here is recommended to get a feel for the Indian culture and life. The best shopping malls in the city are Chennai Citi Centre and Spencer Plaza.

How unusual woods create delicious new flavors for whisky lovers.

A taste of the Ozarks, via Ireland.

Covering the world of food, wine and spirits, I get to try a lot of interesting things every year, but recently one new taste really jumped out. It was the Redbreast Missouri Oak Edition whiskey, and it was wonderful, one of the best new whiskies I’ve tried in a long time.

It’s also an offbeat cultural/geographic mash-up, as Redbreast is a respected old-school Irish whiskey producer, which claims to be the most awarded single pot still whiskey producer on earth, with many gold and double gold medal from prestigious competitions. Unlike most Irish whiskies, which are blends, they make high-end single pot still distillations, typically aged in sherry and bourbon casks like some of the finest single malt Scotches. But in this case, in addition to sherry and bourbon, the whiskey gets time in virgin Missouri Oak barrels from the Ozarks. This is a region of great natural beauty that is known for a lot of things, but high-end whiskey is not one of them. It’s the first spirit other than moonshine and corn whiskey that I’ve seen marketed with an Ozarks connection, so I thought I would try it, and I’m glad I did.

The Ozarks region of Missouri is high on natural beauty, but until now had little to do with great ... [+] whiskey.

Since it’s bottled at 101-proof, I recommend a splash of water, but otherwise you don’t need to do anything to this delicious whiskey. It’s got a great balance of sweetness and body, with tannins from the oak and hints of black cherry, apple and vanilla. There’s just a touch of spices, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and a creamy finish that lingers on the tongue. From nosing to the first sip to after you’ve finished, it’s a winner. The Redbreast Missouri Oak Edition can be found online for around $200 a bottle.

I loved it, but it’s not the only tasty spin on unique wood ageing I’ve come across lately that warrants a further look. I’ve always been a big fan of Japanese whiskey, have traveled to Japan several times, visited distilleries, top whisky bars and written extensively on the subject. But the perfectionist industry in Japan has always been based on the best of the Scottish model, so Japanese rye whisky is much less common. The Kaikyo Distillery is one of the pioneers, and just released the third edition of its Hatozaki “Omakase” Rye, a Mizunara Cask Finish.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

This rye whisky from Japan's Hatozaki is aged in rare Mizunara oak

Mizunara is a fairly rare Japanese white oak tree, mainly from Hokkaido, that has gained cult popularity in recent years as a specialty wood for ageing premium whiskies, but it is unusual for a rye. This is a low rye mashbill made in very small batches and aged first in charred new oak, then the Mizunara casks. The latter adds unusual flavor elements such as coconut and other tropical fruits. These go well with the cereal or bread notes of the rye, and there’s a hint of oakiness. It’s a refined, layered and smooth take on rye whisky. The Hatozaki Omakase Rye Third Edition Mizunara Cask Finish is made exclusively for the U.S. market, with 3000 bottles available, at 84-proof and a suggested retail of $95.

Great Jones Distilling Company is a New York City-based producer that claims to be the first whiskey distillery to open in Manhattan since Prohibition, and they do a lot of limited-editions. The latest is the Great Jones x Wolffer Estate Cask Finished Bourbon . Wolffer Estate in turn is a New York winery on the east coast of Long Island, so this is an Empire State product through and through. If you need a thematic local whiskey to serve for a Mets, Yankees or Bills game, you cannot go wrong, but it’s a great choice for any whiskey fan.

A collaboration between two New York producers, Great Jones Distillery and Wolffer Vineyards.

They start with a blend of four- to seven-year-old bourbon aged in new American oak (like all bourbon by law), then age it a second time for over a year in barrique barrels used for Wolffer’s Estate Caya Cabernet Franc. The estate casks add a unique flavor profile, producing a deliciously rich and decadent bourbon which evoked one of my all-time favorite desserts, sticky toffee pudding. It’s full bodied but not aggressive, bottled at 88-proof and a great value at just $50.

How the Indian Diaspora Is Supporting India’s Inbound Travel Growth – India Report

Bulbul Dhawan

August 13th, 2024 at 11:00 PM EDT

Trevolution Group's data on international travel to India highlights the country's growing popularity as a tourist destination.

Bulbul Dhawan

The Skift India Newsletter is your go-to platform for all news related to travel, tourism, airlines, and hospitality in India.

India’s travel landscape is evolving rapidly, reflecting the country’s growing economic clout and the increasing confidence of its travelers. The first half of 2024 saw a significant surge in both outbound and inbound tourism, with Trevolution Group reporting 46% market growth compared to the same period last year. This uptick is not just a rebound from the pandemic but an indicator of the deeper shifts in Indian travel habits.

Trevolution reported that trans-Pacific flights, in particular, have soared well above pre-pandemic levels, driven by a combination of increased flight connectivity, a robust economic outlook, and a burgeoning middle class eager to explore the world.

The traditional leisure tourism sector remains strong, but what’s particularly noteworthy is the sharp growth in the visiting friends and relatives (VFR) segment. This reflects the deep ties of the Indian diaspora, particularly the 4.4 million Indian Americans, who are increasingly making frequent trips back home.

For Trevolution Group, which sold over 54,000 airline tickets to and from India in the first half of 2024, these trends are highly encouraging. The company’s 68% increase in outbound tourism sales and 37% growth in inbound tourism highlight India as a pivotal market.

While India’s travel demand continues to rise, the country’s travelers are also becoming more discerning, seeking out both value and flexibility. This bodes well for companies like Trevolution.

The travel habits of Indian passengers reveal a marked shift towards greater flexibility. The demand for round-trip tickets has risen, yet there’s also a significant increase in one-way tickets, pointing to a desire for more adaptable travel plans. This is further evidenced by the growing number of last-minute bookings, as Indian travelers take advantage of more affordable and accessible international flights.

As airfares stabilize and even decrease — in the first half of 2024, airfares to India were 27% cheaper in Economy and 8.5% in Business class, with the average Economy ticket price being $894.32. — international travel is becoming increasingly accessible to a wider segment of the population.

This affordability, combined with the push to boost tourism, signals a robust outlook for the travel industry in India. The next phase of growth will likely see more Indians venturing abroad.

“India remains a key market for Trevolution Group, consistently demonstrating strong growth in air travel year after year. It was also one of the first markets to rebound to pre-pandemic levels by 2021,” said Alex Weinstein, the founder of Dyninno Group, which restructured and rebranded as the Trevolution Group in 2022.

Oyo Raises $175 Million in Latest Funding Round

Hospitality company Oyo has raised INR 14.5 billion (approximately $175 million) in its latest funding round. However, in this round, it has also seen its valuation drop from a peak of $10 billion in 2019 to $2.4 billion in its latest funding round, Skift’s Asia Editor Peden Doma Bhutia has explained .

With this, Oyo’s valuation has now fallen below the total capital raised, estimated to be around $3.3 billion.

Oyo will use the capital to support its continued growth and global expansion plans, according to filings.

Earlier this year, Oyo withdrew its application for an IPO , which it had filed in March 2023. A source familiar with Oyo’s plans had told Skift that the company is close to completing a refinancing and expects to pursue an IPO after that.

Air India Express Adds 6 New Routes to Domestic Network

Budget airline Air India Express has launched six new daily domestic flights in a day. The new flights are set to operate on the Chennai-Bhubaneswar, Chennai-Bagdogra, Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram, Kolkata-Varanasi, Kolkata-Guwahati, and Guwahati-Jaipur sectors.

The airline said that the Guwahati-Jaipur route is exclusive to Air India Express, with no other carrier directly connecting these two cities.

The airline connects more than 30 domestic destinations, along with 15 international ones. It operates over 380 flights daily with a fleet of 82 aircraft. Over a span of the last 10 months, the airline has inducted 26 new Boeing 737-8 aircraft to its fleet in an effort to expand its operations.

Radisson Signs 100-Key Park Inn by Radisson Hotel in Chennai

Radisson Hotel Group has signed a 100-room hotel under its Park Inn by Radisson brand in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai city. The hotel marks the brand’s debut in the city and is set to open in 2028.

The hotel chain currently operates seven properties in the state of Tamil Nadu.

Radisson is one of India’s largest international hotel operators with more than 180 hotels in operation and development.

In an earlier interview with Skift , Elie Younes, executive vice president and global chief development officer at Radisson Hotel Group said, “Our expansion plans for 2024 are ambitious, focusing not only on major metropolitan cities but also targeting Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns to cater to the growing demand in these markets.”

Goa Tourism Minister Calls for Enhanced International Connectivity

Goa tourism minister Rohan Khaunte has called for an enhancement of international connectivity to the coastal state in a meeting with Indian tourism minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

He said that increasing direct international flights and improving connections between Goa and major global cities would help the state attract more tourists.

Khaunte earlier told Skift that he wants to expand Goa’s image beyond nightlife, beaches, and parties. The state is seeking to attract remote workers or digital nomads, for which it plans to roll out high-speed internet across its rural areas and create coworking spaces along its iconic beaches.

The two ministers also discussed Goa’s plan to adopt regenerative tourism, as well as rejuvenation of the Basilica of Bom Jesus heritage site in the state.

Ziptrrip offers end-to-end solutions integrating travel bookings and expense management for corporates. The startup is planning to use the funding for market expansion, hiring, and product innovation.

The startup has more than 250 corporate clients. It achieved break-even in January this year, and has been maintaining profitability since then, Ziptrrip has said.
