Heading to Abu Dhabi? Relaxed COVID-19 regulations applicable, all you need to know

No more Green Pass for entry, no Green List, here’s what you need to know

 20200714 abu dhabi border

Dubai: The Abu Dhabi Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Committee approved reduced COVID-19 precautions and guidelines which came in to effect this week.

From entry of travellers from within the UAE to the rules applicable for international passengers arriving in the emirates, several restrictions have been relaxed given positive indicators that signal the recovery phase of the pandemic according to the authority. Here is a summary of all the applicable rules, and this is primarily specific to Abu Dhabi unless mentioned otherwise.

Green Pass – Monday, February 28

The Abu Dhabi Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Committee scrapped the green pass and EDE screening requirements for passengers from within the country to enter the emirate, from Monday, February 28. This means that if you’re heading to Abu Dhabi from Dubai or any other emirate, you will not need to show a Green Pass at the border, starting this Monday.

However, it is important to note that this is only applicable for entry into the emirate. Abu Dhabi still has the Green Pass system in place for entry to public spaces, events etc. which would mean that if you plan on visiting such places or attending events, you would need to have the Green Pass anyway. The operating capacity has also increased to 90 per cent at events, tourist attractions and commercial platforms in Abu Dhabi.

From Monday, Green Pass will still be required for:

- Entry to tourist attractions and commercial places

- Events and private events

- Abu Dhabi government building premises (employees, visitors and contractors) unless you have a vaccine exemption certificate.

Getting the Green Pass

The Green Pass system on Al Hosn was updated in January to include the booster shot requirement. As per the update, you would only get the Green Pass if you had also taken the third booster shot six months after taking the second vaccine shot.

Once you have received the booster shot, you would also need to get a negative PCR test report, which would then turn the status Green for the next 14 days.

Green list for international travel no longer applicable

Abu Dhabi had a green list system in place for travellers from certain countries. Anyone returning from a green list country to Abu Dhabi did not have to quarantine – including those who are unvaccinated.

As of February 26, the Green List no longer applicable and all international passengers can arrive in the emirates without the need for quarantine. In addition to this, for vaccinated travellers, the PCR test requirement has also been scrapped.

For non-vaccinated travellers, a negative PCR test conducted within 48 hours of departure or a recovery certificate with a QR code proving they have recovered from coronavirus within a month of the date of travel is what is required.

New COVID-19 cases or those in contact

Abu Dhabi authorities also added that the wristband requirement during home quarantine has been scrapped.

In addition to this, the rules applicable to people who have been in contact with confirmed COVID-19 cases has also been changed. Home quarantine requirement has been removed but these individuals must get tested daily, with a PCR test, for five consecutive days.

These rules differ in Dubai, where confirmed close contacts with COVID-19 cases need not quarantine or test if there are no symptoms.

People can choose not to wear face masks outside, Abu Dhabi and Dubai's crisis authorities confirmed. Face masks are still mandatory in public indoor spaces such as malls, schools etc.

United Arab Emirates Travel Advisory

Travel advisory july 13, 2023, united arab emirates - level 2: exercise increased caution.

Reissued with obsolete COVID-19 page links removed.

Exercise increased caution in the United Arab Emirates due to   the threat of missile or drone attacks and terrorism.

Country Summary:  The possibility of attacks affecting U.S. citizens and interests in the Gulf and Arabian Peninsula remains an ongoing, serious concern.  Militant groups operating in Yemen have stated an intent to attack neighboring countries, including the UAE, using missiles and drones.  Missile and drone attacks in early 2022 targeted populated areas and civilian infrastructure.

Due to risks to civil aviation operating within the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman region, including the United Arab Emirates, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued an advisory Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM). For more information U.S. citizens should consult the  Federal Aviation Administration’s Prohibitions, Restrictions and Notices .

While residents and visitors generally find a safe and secure environment in the UAE, the country continues to face the threat of terrorism.  Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets, shopping malls, and local government facilities.

Abu Dhabi Travel Update: Entry Guidelines for Tourists

airport passenger

Are you planning to visit Abu Dhabi? If you're not sure about entry restrictions, here's all you need to know.

Entry requirements for Abu Dhabi

When entering the city, one needs to provide a negative COVID-19 test result. Two test results that are accepted are: 1. RT-PCR test (Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction test) that is typically done through a nasal swab 2. Laser-based DPI (Diffractive Phase Interferometry) test that's done via a blood test.

COVID 19 test

Does one need to undergo both DPI And RT-PCR Tests?

No, individuals can provide either of the two test results, so a negative result from either of the tests is accepted. However, they can enter the city only 48 hours after receiving the test result.

The city is a paradise for tourists. It's quite logical that guests may plan to stay in Abu Dhabi for longer than six days. In such cases, they would need to take another RT-PCR test on Day 6.

The above-mentioned rules are applicable to the tourists, as well as Abu Dhabi residents who may have exited the emirate and may consider returning. The extra measure ensures the health and safety of the community.

For volunteers in the COVID-19 vaccine trials, they are exempted from these measures. They are authorised to use emergency vehicle lanes for a smooth journey.

Do international travellers need to disclose the date of entry?

The Abu Dhabi Crisis, Emergency and Disasters Committee requires international guests to disclose the date of entry into the country. They can do this at checkpoints designated for international travellers at all ports. Passengers who don’t adhere to the guidelines will have to pay penalties.

Where can you get the tests done?

It would help to know the location of PCR testing centres in the city. In Abu Dhabi, places such as Zayed Sports City, Al Wathba Screening Centre, and Abu Dhabi Corniche among others are testing centres. For those who wish to get a DPI test, it can be done for DH50 at Zayed Sports City and Abu Dhabi Corniche.

Quarantine & Entry Requirements into Abu Dhabi

This guide has been superseded with with latest rules that came into effect from 26 February 2022

In an ongoing effort to control the spread of coronavirus, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates has strict testing and quarantine measures in place for visitors and returning residents.

Take note that entry rules differ in Abu Dhabi from the rest of the United Arab Emirates.

Since 27 August 2021, all residents and visitors to Abu Dhabi regardless of what sort of visa they are travelling on will need pre-approval from ICA (Federal Authority of Identity and Citizenship).

From 19 September 2021, the need to wear a tracker watch while self-quarantining has been abolished. All other information below relates to the latest Abu Dhabi entry rules from 5 September 2021.

International Arrivals into Abu Dhabi

For citizens, resident visa holders and tourists to Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi has re-opened its borders for international tourism and will now be issuing visas on arrival and e-Visas to citizens of all countries if visiting criteria are met. However, strict testing and self-quarantine measures must still be followed.

The rules are frequently changing, with the latest update taking effect from 5 September 2021 as follows:

  • All arrivals into Abu Dhabi must now apply for ICA approval before they fly – this is largely to determine your international movements prior to arriving and vaccine status. Non-residents will be issued with a UIN.
  • Download the Alhosn App before you fly – this will record your vaccine information and any PCR tests performed within the UAE.
  • Arriving into Abu Dhabi by air requires a negative PCR test from no more than 48 hours before boarding your flight.
  • If you are vaccinated you will be given a PCR test on arrival and again on Day 6 if you stay in the Emirate.
  • If you are not vaccinated , then take a test on arrival, Day 6 and Day 9.
  • If you are fully vaccinated , you will be tested on arrival, the need to self-quarantine has been abolished for those 16+ with a WHO approved vaccine but you must take further PCR tests on Day 4 an Day 8.
  • Unvaccinated you must self-quarantine for 10 days with a PCR test taken on arrival. Take a further PCR test on Day 9, if this is negative you are released from self-quarantine on Day 10.
  • Children under 12 years of age or with severe disabilities are exempt from PCR testing
  • Note an unvaccinated minor from a non-green list country is still subject to 10 days of quarantine, even if the vaccinated parents do not need to quarantine.

Further information can be found on the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre website.

From 27 August 2021 : All incoming tourists must now register on the ICA website AT LEAST 5 DAYS BEFORE TRAVELLING so that their vaccine information can be uploaded onto the UAE “Alhosn” App . They will be issued with a QR Code and UIN – Unified Identification Number – in lieu of an Emirates ID number.

This pre-registration is not required for transit guests to AUH.

You can learn more about current entry requirements into Abu Dhabi on the Visit Abu Dhabi website .

Travelling to Abu Dhabi from Dubai or the Northern Emirates?

It is possible to arrive in Dubai or any other port in the UAE first, then transfer to Abu Dhabi but the same self-quarantine rules must be followed if you’re not vaccinated and from a non-green list country.

PLEASE NOTE DOMESTIC CHANGES FROM 19 SEPTEMBER 2021

The need to have a negative COVID test result to cross domestically between Dubai and Abu Dhabi has been abolished – learn more about the most recent rule change here .

We are seeking clarity if you are required to stop at the International Arrivals tent in Ghantoot still before crossing the Abu Dhabi border. However, the border crossing is now unmanned so it would appear you are free to come in but then responsible for self-enforcing your home quarantine on your arrival into Abu Dhabi emirate.

The fines are large if you do not comply with this self-quarantine.

*Important Update at 20 August 2021: Once you are in Abu Dhabi, it has become mandatory to present a “Green Pass” or “Green Status” on the Al Hosn App in order to enter public buildings and hospitality establishments. You can learn all about the Green Pass rules for Abu Dhabi here .

Without a PCR test result and “green status” on your Alhosn App you would not be able to enter an Abu Dhabi hotel. So if you are still in the compulsory self-quarantine period you’d need a private residence to stay in to complete the self-quarantine.

It is recommended if you are non-green list arrival into Dubai first and you are unvaccinated to not cross into Abu Dhabi emirate until you have completed a Day 9 test and have a negative result on Day 10. Your PCR result remains valid on the Alhosn App for 3 days if you are unvaccinated.

16 things to know before going to Abu Dhabi

With tips on packing, etiquette and safety, here's what you need to know before going to Abu Dhabi © frantic00 / Getty Images

With its rich cultural heritage, sublime landscapes, interesting museums, contemporary architecture, vibrant food scene and kind-hearted people, Abu Dhabi  is a delight.

Abu Dhabi fosters a sense of unhurried living where people take the time to chat. They’ll even go out of their way to show you around an art gallery or point you in the right direction should you find yourself looking for a certain bakery in a maze of backstreets.

With a sizable expat population in the UAE , Emiratis are no strangers to Western culture, but familiarizing yourself with Abu Dhabi’s cultural norms and etiquette makes every interaction more respectful. These practical tips can help you plan your itinerary and know what to expect in terms of weather, general health and safety.

1. Abu Dhabi is one of the safest cities in the world

Abu Dhabi is the kind of city where you could forget your wallet or passport in a taxi or mall food court, and you’re almost certain to find it there or have it returned to you by someone, cash and cards intact. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing and theft are uncommon. It’s generally safe for everyone to walk around late at night.

2. Plan to spend at least four days in Abu Dhabi

Spread over 67,340 sq km (26,000 sq miles), Abu Dhabi is the largest emirate in the UAE. Besides the Rub al Khali (the world’s largest continuous sand desert), it’s home to rugged mountains, a 700km-long (435-mile-long) coastline and nearly 200 islands – all offering diverse experiences that are best savored on an itinerary that doesn’t feel rushed.

While you’ll find museums, shopping malls, skyscrapers, theme parks and mangroves in Abu Dhabi city, the emirate is also home to Al Ain, where fortresses, oases, ancient tombs and mountains offer an unexpected glimpse of the UAE’s history. Traveling around Abu Dhabi slowly gives you the chance to venture out to the verdant oases of Liwa and admire the gigantic orange-red dunes of Rub Al Khali, a 2½-hour drive from the capital.

3. Pack clothing and shoes for the outdoors

To fully appreciate Abu Dhabi’s wealth of outdoor experiences, it’s worth crafting an itinerary that includes activities like cycling along the Corniche , kayaking through the tidal lagoons of Jubail Mangrove Park , practicing your golf swing among saltwater lakes and sand dunes at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club and exploring the mighty dunes around Liwa Oasis by fat bike.

Depending on the season, pack clothing, shoes, a hat and a day pack for outdoor excursions and activities. Compared to the mild weather in the city and coast, temperatures in the interior region (such as the desert and mountains) can reach extremes. So, it’s a good idea to bring layers, especially if you plan on visiting between November and March. In summer, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen make it easier to bear the heat and humidity.

4. Get around by taxi with the Abu Dhabi Taxi app

If you plan on getting around Abu Dhabi by taxi, download the Abu Dhabi Taxi booking app ( App Store and Google Play ) on your smartphone in advance. You’ll thank yourself for doing so instead of trying to hail one on the street in 40°C (104°F) weather.

The app connects you to the nearest available taxi, which usually arrives at your location in under 10 minutes. You can also book a wheelchair-friendly taxi using the app. You’ll need to specify your pick-up and drop-off location, which means that you’re less likely to get lost, even when trying to reach a hole-in-the-wall biryani restaurant in Downtown Abu Dhabi.

Alternatively, for use in the wider country, download and use the UAE-based  Careem smartphone app to book rides.

5. Hop on the free shuttle or take the public bus

The complimentary Experience Abu Dhabi Shuttle Bus service connects eight routes around the city and attractions such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi , Qasr Al Hosn , Qasr Al Watan and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque . These modern air-conditioned buses are wheelchair-accessible and are an excellent way to explore Abu Dhabi Island, Saadiyat Island and Yas Island.

To travel on public buses in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, buy the prepaid Hafilat Smart Card at the Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station or any branch of the supermarket chain Lulu Hypermarket. Load money onto it using the recharge machines at bus stations. To pay, scan in and out on the validator in the buses. Bus journeys cost Dhs2 plus 5 fils per km.

6. Dress appropriately to blend in with the city’s residents

Choose to dress according to the setting of your planned activities for the day. To be respectful while visiting a museum, the markets in Al Mina or cultural sights such as Qasr Al Hosn and Wahat Al Karama , wear opaque clothing that is not body-hugging, covers your shoulders and falls well below the knee. This is also the appropriate way to dress while visiting Al Ain or smaller towns in the Liwa Oasis.

At religious sites like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, both men and women who are not modestly dressed in loose, opaque clothing that covers their arms and legs are asked to wear a robe over their clothes (you can buy one from a nearby shop, if there are none to borrow). At the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Abrahamic Family House , women will need a scarf to cover their heads.

To dine at a restaurant or visit a mall, dress as you would in any other city, keeping in mind that the locals are always well-groomed. Feel free to show off your style at nightclubs and bars that are located inside hotels.

For women, swimsuits and bikinis are acceptable at hotel swimming pools and public and private beaches. That being said, you’re more likely to see women in one-piece swimsuits and modest swimming attire on public beaches that aren’t located in expat-heavy residential areas. Female travelers might find it useful to carry a scarf or a shirt to cover their shoulders and arms if needed.

7. Respect privacy when photographing public spaces

While photographing sights around Abu Dhabi, pay attention to where your lens is pointed. Don’t take photos of people, especially women and children, without permission.

In the UAE, it’s illegal to photograph or take videos of people without their consent and share them on social media. While it’s unlikely that you’ll be arrested for taking a photo of an attraction where other people also appear, wait until they have moved out of the frame. Never attempt to zoom in and take portrait-style photos (of recognizable faces) without explicit consent.

8. Learn the local greeting and phrases

English is widely spoken but you’re likely to be greeted with the Emirati greeting “as salam alaykum” . Transcending the casual courtesy of an English “Hello”, it translates to “peace be upon you.” Responding with “walaykum as salam” and using “shukran”  (thank you) in Arabic will earn you the appreciation of locals.

9. Familiarize yourself with the rules of social interaction

When meeting an Emirati of the opposite sex, don’t reach out for a handshake. Wait for them to offer their hand first; it is likely that instead you will be greeted with a smile and them placing their right hand on their heart as a mark of respect – you should respond the same way.

Physical contact among members of the same sex is common, usually as handshakes (always with the right hand) when you’re getting acquainted. Emirati men may also greet each other with a nose-to-nose kiss or cheek-to-cheek kisses, with the latter also being common among Emirati women.

10. Be aware of the rules of non-verbal communication

In Emirati culture, non-verbal communication is important, so be conscious of your body language, especially in formal situations. Whether in a majlis , an Emirati home, or a government office, don’t sit with your knees crossed over each other, or with one leg resting on the other knee such that your foot is pointing at or your sole is facing someone – as both are insulting.

Pointing at someone with your index finger, beckoning with it, or wagging it while emphasizing your point is rude.

Use your right hand to accept or offer something, such as a cup of gahwa (Arabic coffee) or money, and to eat (the left hand is reserved for the toilet).

Rude gesturing (showing someone the middle finger) and hurling profanities is illegal and can lead to fines, imprisonment and deportation.

11. Behave appropriately during Ramadan

The month of Ramadan is a time of prayer for Muslims who fast from dawn to sunset. For those not fasting, food and drinks are readily available during the day at restaurants and cafes in shopping malls, hotels and elsewhere.

The law requires that non-Muslim visitors only eat and drink (including water and chewing gum) at restaurants and designated spots (such as mall food courts) out of consideration for those fasting. Most non-fasting residents maintain discretion as a matter of social courtesy. You will not be arrested for sipping water outside on a hot day, but do your best to do so out of sight, and be ready to apologize if required.

Don’t blast loud music in public places – use headphones instead. Modest dressing in clothes that cover the shoulders and legs is appreciated.

A woman wearing modest clothing stands in a courtyard of a vast white mosque complex

12. Know the code of conduct at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an active place of worship where physical contact between visitors, even when posing for a photograph, is inappropriate. Don’t touch, hold hands or have an arm around your companion while having photos taken – security will approach you and ask you to delete the photo. You’re not allowed to gesture (so no victory signs or thumbs up). Don’t attempt to lie down on the exquisite carpet while taking photos inside the prayer halls.

13. Public displays of affection are frowned upon

Kissing, hugging and other public displays of affection are frowned upon, and prohibited at religious sites such as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. These days, holding hands does not raise eyebrows, but use your judgment according to the setting. It’s probably okay to do so in a shopping mall or at the beach, but not at the fish market or the Abrahamic Family House. Same-sex relationships are illegal in Abu Dhabi.

14. There is no tolerance for drunken behavior

In Abu Dhabi, alcohol is available at licensed restaurants and bars, and consumption of alcohol in unauthorized locations (such as a public beach) is illegal. While it's perfectly acceptable to have a good time, there is zero tolerance for rash, loud and aggressive behavior as a result of having had one too many. That means swearing, rude gestures, picking fights or causing a public nuisance are all illegal and punishable by imprisonment and fines.

15. Don’t drink and drive, even over short distances

Driving under the influence of alcohol is a crime in the UAE and can result in imprisonment and fines upwards of Dhs20,000, should you find yourself in an accident. If you plan on drinking, leave the rental car behind and take a taxi instead.

16. Make note of emergency numbers

In case of emergencies and the need for rescue, evacuation or urgent medical assistance, contact Abu Dhabi Police on 999.

They gathered 20 people a ctually named Summer from around the world and treated them to the most memorable summer vacation. Clever!

“Everything is so luxe—the culture, the people, the activities, the experiences—everything has been out of this world,” remarked one of the myriad of Summers. The group included several influencers, including Saudi actress and screenwriter Summer Sheesh and USA-based Tik Toker Summer Warren. While they made the most of their time, they all hope to visit again. “If you’re considering a trip to Abu Dhabi, plan for at least a week, maybe two,” said one Summer. “Be prepared to do a lot and have a list of options before you come.”

Watch the video to see how the Summers enjoyed some memorable moments in Abu Dhabi.

Over the course of three days, the 20 Summers from across the world took full advantage of the city and surprises awaited them at every turn. They blended cultural immersion, adventure and relaxation—all curated according to their interests (not all Summers are the same!). The highest number of drones ever used in a short film tells the story of Zayed International Airport in Spectacular Aerial Display

the-week-pti-wire-updates

ABU DHABI, UAE, Aug. 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Tradition and innovation, birds of prey and drones come together for the cinematic launch of Zayed International Airport, a breathtaking fusion of modern materials, natural light, and space, adding a new iconic element to Abu Dhabi's skyline. For 4,000 years, we have harnessed the flight of birds of prey to fuel life and civilisation. By visually connecting the freedom of a Falcon's flight with the beauty of the most cutting-edge aircraft, this film celebrates the new airport's seamless operations, effortless experiences, futuristic technology and connection with nature. The film shows how Abu Dhabi's rich culture, history and spirit of innovation have led to this moment: the launch of the most innovative travel experience of our time. It captures the beauty of the desert while celebrating innovation to reveal the majesty of the airport, rebranded with elements of the Emirati culture and encompassing the strong foundation of Arabian heritage fostered by the vision of the UAE founding father - Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Once liberated, the stately falcon mutates into a giant drone falcon that banks, beating its wings and turning toward the airport runway; it circles above and morphs into an A380, while the beauty of the terminal architecture comes into view. Upon landing and after being welcomed to Abu Dhabi, the drone A380 morphs again into a mass of twinkling drones flying out toward the sky to compose the new logo of Zayed International Airport, encompassing elements of the rich Emirati culture, and the strong foundation of Arabian heritage fostered by the vision of the UAE founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The new identity celebrates the heritage of Abu Dhabi through shape and forms inspired by its elemental landscape and history: a traditional dhow boat, a date palm tree, the desert sun, the Qasr Al Hosn Fort and the iconic Building. The icons merge into the new logo, proudly expressing Abu Dhabi's identity while inviting passengers to write their own story. Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and CEO at Abu Dhabi Airports said: "This video captures the sense of freedom and space of Zayed International Airport; it is a fantastic medium showcasing the blending of tradition and innovation in our stunning new terminal. Zayed International was designed to give the best user experience to passengers and partners alike, and it is poised to capture the rising tourism demand for Abu Dhabi".
