We had an amazing trip and we're very pleased we chose this company. Even though it poured half way through, it was an unforgettable and exhilarating experience.

Don and David were fantastic for our morning tour. Highly recommend this boat for those who need a back rest and/or are prone to seasickness. We took Dramamine and felt nothing! Even had the delicious sandwiches, chips and cookies they provided and were fine on the ride back. Love that the company provided us all dry bags for our items right at the pickup point. During the snorkeling section we got to see multiple sea turtles and swim up close to them. Super memorable experience! They did mention that the sunset tours do get canceled sometimes because of the water levels so plan accordingly for the time of year you are visiting.

Do not recommend booking w/ this company. They may be too small to accommodate multiple time slots. We booked a sunset tour for this Thursday, which was cancelled (due to "time constraints" w/ the captain- no other reason offered) and rescheduled to Friday afternoon. At the last minute, our Friday tour was cancelled due to the same "time constraints" with the captain. It seems they only have one captain to accommodate all tours, so if there's a scheduling issue- they have no back up. This would've been nice to know when we were originally canceled so we could've booked with a different company. By the time they cancelled us, all other company's tours were booked and we couldn't make the one other 7:30am tour they offered bc we had other things planned. The woman on the phone was pleasant, but it doesn't make up for over $500 spent on a tour we only came to Kauai for. Our first time here, and we were robbed of an experience bc they didn't want to be honest with us the first time they cancelled, even though they knew the captain wouldn't make the Friday time slot they "Rescheduled" us for. Im sure they're nice, but at this moment- book with a different company that has more employees to accommodate for their one (and only?) captain's availability. Sad we missed this tour on our first time to Kauai.

Absolutely amazing, the scenery is breathtaking, the service is outstanding! This is our 2nd time joining Na Pali Coast Tour, mainly due to Captain David, he is thoughtful, kind and caring, great sense of humor! Must see! Will be the same without Mr. David! Highly recommend for families with kids!

Photo of Billy B.

I have done a few of these tours and this was by far the best. Don and David bring a very personal touch to the boat ride and it felt like a private tour. I would highly recommend booking with them!

Such an amazing experience. This was super informational and beautiful. I even cried at one point because the beauty was just too much to take in. Dave was so funny too. And Jason was a great shuttle driver. This was so worth the money and I highly recommend.

I wish I could give 0 stars. The imbeciles that run this company are incapable of managing their books. We booked with a group of 8 people for a Monday at noon, and the company canceled on us because they claimed they couldn't run that many sails that day. With very little help of the company, we rebooked for Wednesday at 7 am. We were called on Tuesday at 4 pm to be canceled on yet again for supposed engine issues. Safe to say we rebooked with a different company. I am very disappointed with the awful management of this company.

Absolutely incredible experience and gorgeous views of the Na Pali Coast, caves, the ocean, Hanalei Bay, etc. I would do this tour again in a heartbeat, and of course I would choose to do it with this amazing team again! Our tour guides were amazing and the boat captain made the last part of the tour feel like a roller coaster ride- so much fun. If you get seasick though, I would not recommend. The waves can be very big and choppy at times (more fun for those adrenaline junkies though). The tour guides were also very knowledgeable about the landscapes and Kaua'i in general. It was so much fun and stunningly beautiful. I am SO happy we chose to do this! It was one of my favorite experiences on our whole honeymoon. Thank you guys!

Na Pali Coast Hanalei Tours

If you’re on the North Shore of Kauai, you will especially appreciate the boat tours of the Na Pali Coast that depart from Hanalei Bay. The convenient tours save a road trip to the other side of the island (Port Allen) while offering a wonderful opportunity to explore the island’s remarkable Na Pali Coast.

The Hanalei tours of the Na Pali Coast are offered in the spring, summer and fall months, generally starting in the middle of April and ending the last week of October. During this time, Hanalei Bay is usually placid, allowing tour boats to pull up to the beach to load passengers. During the winter months, the surf is stronger and boat loadings are often not safe.

In addition to the convenience of the Hanalei departures for North Shore visitors, the Na Pali Coast is nearer to Hanalei Bay than it is for Port Allen, the usual launching point for Na Pali Coast tours. As a result, more time can be spent on the Na Pali Coast, and less time on travel, with a Hanalei departure. Moreover, the tours from Hanalei visit the opposite end of the Na Pali Coast from the Port Allen tours. Weather permitting, two different sea caves can be navigated by the smaller boats of the Hanalei tours. The caves are usually not seen on tours from Port Allen. Those tours (from Port Allen) generally travel only as far as Kalalau Beach before turning around.

The boats leaving from Hanalei are substantially smaller than the ones leaving from Port Allen. The Port Allen boats are larger, and more stable, catamarans. The Hanalei tour boats have a rougher ride, especially during the travel between Hanalei Bay and the Na Pali Coast. Those prone to seasickness or have certain medical conditions should choose a Port Allen tour instead.

Another notable difference between the Hanalei and Port Allen departures is the time of day and lighting conditions. The 8AM and 12 noon departures from Hanalei do not benefit from the spectacular “golden hour” on the Na Pali Coast in the late afternoon. Though there is some interplay with light and shadows in the early morning hours of the 8AM departures, most of these time periods are spent in direct sunlight. Though the scenery is beautiful, the sunset cruises leaving from Port Allen offer richer viewing and photo options in our opinion.

Wear water friendly clothes on the Na Pali Coast Hanalei tours as you will probably get wet to some degree. Bring sun protection, including sunglasses, hats and reef safe sunscreen. A light jacket helps with the ocean spray on the higher speed travel between the coast and Hanalei Bay and also in the event of rain.

Na Pali Coast Hanalei Tour Photos

The following is an account of a Na Pali Coast Hanalei tour.

Na Pali Coast Tour

We met up at the company’s Hanalei office next to Tahiti Nui. Dry bags were issued to all participants to protect personal belongings. Passengers walked in a group from the office to Hanalei Beach for the pickup.

Na Pali Coast Tour

It was a glorious morning in Hanalei. Shortly, the 26-foot catamaran Leilani arrived to pick us up. (Getting onboard required wading a very short distance into the water and climbing up several steps on the back of the catamaran.)

Na Pali Coast Tour

Soon we were off on our adventure and heading up the coast. You could easily make out the different beaches on Kauai’s North Shore. This is the Tunnels Beach/Haena Beach area.

Na Pali Coast Tour

This is where the North Shore beaches end at Ke’e Beach and the Na Pali Coast begins. The first beach to be found on the Na Pali Coast tour is Hanakapiai Beach. On land, this beach can only be reached via a two-mile hike on the Kalalau Trail.

This incredible sea cave has a waterfall cascading through a hole in the ceiling. Look closely and you can see where a rock has wedged in the opening, something that was new from the last time we had visited the cave.

Na Pali Coast Tour

After spending about 45 minutes at the snorkeling spot, we sped back to Hanalei Bay. Though it was mostly sunny on this day, rains are a common occurrence so be prepared. A light jacket helps with the ocean spray on the trip back and also in the event of rain.

Na Pali Coast Tour

It was a choppy, high speed trip back with plenty of ocean spray and plenty of scenery!

Na Pali Experience

Kauai's pristine Na Pali Coast stands out among Hawaii's many beautiful coastlines for its rugged and striking beauty. Lush, verdant cliffs rise dramatically out of the ocean to heights of over 4,000 feet (1,200 meters).

Much of this 17-mile stretch of coastline is unreachable by land because of its remote location and sheer cliffs. Hikers can view approximately one-third of the coastline by walking the strenuous 11.2-mile Kalalau trail. You can only see the rest of Na Pali by air or boat.

Native Hawaiians used outrigger canoes to reach the beautiful beaches and valleys of Na Pali. Today, only ambitious kayakers attempt this challenging paddle during the nicest summer weather.

Boat tours are truly the best, easiest, and most rewarding way to experience the full scope and scale of the Na Pali Coast. Year-round boat tours are available on our sailing catamarans and rigid-hull rafts.

We promise that the sheer beauty of the Na Pali will take your breath away. We also provide tours to Kauai's sunny south shore when the winter weather makes conditions rough, unpleasant, or unsafe on the Na Pali coast.

ALOHA FROM THE NA PALI CATAMARAN CREW

Along the Northwest corner of Kauai lies 16 miles of rugged, inaccessible coastline, known as the Na Pali Coast, meaning “The Cliffs” or “Many Cliffs.”

The Na Pali is home to some of the world’s most famous tropical locations with over 6,175 acres of undeveloped paradise. Although there are a variety of ways to explore the Na Pali Coast, a boat tour departing from Hanalei Bay has been the preferred choice amongst our island’s visitors for decades. Join Hanalei’s #1 boat tour for the adventure of a lifetime to the most spectacular and dramatic coastline on earth!

Aboard our two identical 35′ motorized catamarans, you’ll find the perfect middle-ground between adventure and comfort! Our vessels are small enough to enter sea caves, while large enough to provide enough room to walk around freely even at full capacity. For your comfort, we have provided a spacious restroom, sunbrella shade, forward-facing seating, and a sturdy swim ladder.

Don’t miss this chance to join us, and come experience the “highlight of your trip” with Na Pali Catamaran!

EXPERIENCE THE MOST SPECTACULAR AND DRAMATIC COASTLINE ON EARTH!

Kauai has countless natural places of beauty to experience. Allow us to show you the most beautiful parts of some of the most spectacular and dramatic coastline on earth while maintaining comfort, safety, and adventure simultaneously.

Our 35′ aluminum power catamaran, Kamahele Kai II, is small enough to enter Na Pali’s famous sea caves, yet large enough to be comfortable. Unlike other tour boats that enter the sea caves, our vessel features a bathroom, shade, adequate seating, and room to walk around freely. Even at full capacity, it is not overcrowded.

The boat was super clean. The crew was fantastic and they made the tour fantastic! I would highly recommend you take the Na'Pali coast tour with these guys!!!

Na Pali Catamaran tours are a fantastic way to see the Na Pali coast. The boat tour offers views that are not available on the helicopter tours. We especially enjoyed the sea caves and getting to enter one of them. Our tour guides were knowledgeable and made the tour very entertaining. I highly recommend this tour.

The best tour of the Na Pali I’ve ever had. Going into the caves was amazing. My seven year old son was so happy and had a great experience! Thank you all so much!!

We have toured the Na Pali coast several ways (top of Waimea Canyon, a sunset cruise from the west side, powered hang gliders when they were operating) and this experience outdid them all. Captain Lance and Crewman Miguel gave an astounding tour, complete with wildlife sitings, great history and information, and wonderful snorkeling with the turtles. We could tell Capt. Lance loves the sea and is very knowledgeable about ocean conditions. He was able to take us into three sea caves safely. We had a delightful afternoon. We highly recommend this activity for anyone visiting Kauai. Totally worth the time and money.

7 BEST Napali Coast Boat Tours (Firsthand Experience)

There truly is no place on earth like Kauai’s Nā Pali Coast (Napali Coast). Witnessing this rugged 17-mile-long stretch of mountainous coastline should be on everyone’s bucket list — and one of the best ways to do it is by taking a boat tour!

But most visitors don’t realize how many Napali Coast boat tour there are to choose from, and just how different your experience will be based on what tour you book.

You could end up on a blow-up raft flying through sea caves and holding on for dear life (sounds fun for some people and a nightmare for others!) Or you could enjoy a delicious dinner as you cruise along the coast in a luxury catamaran. And there are more options — Napali Coast tours with snorkeling, combo tours that include a visit to a nearby inhabited Hawaiian island, and boat tours that actually land on the Napali Coast so you can explore up close.

I recently went on a magical Napali Coast boat ride but before I did, I researched all the options to figure out the best tour for me. In this article I’ve simplified everything I’ve learned about the best Napali Coast boat tours so you can easily book the best experience for your Kauai vacation.

Best Kauai Napali Coast Boat Tours: Options for Everyone!

Browse through all of these Kauai Napali Coast boat tours because they are each different! But first, here are a few tips to help you choose:

☀️ Day tours vs sunset cruises : You’ll have a better chance of seeing wildlife if you go on a day tour of the Naplali Coast, and the sea conditions tend to be calmer. However, the the light cast on the Napali Coast in the evening is perfect taking photos!

⛵️ Catamaran vs zodiac tours : Most Napali Coast tours are either on a catamaran or zodiac raft. You’ll experience a smoother ride, and overall more comfortable tour on a catamaran, but zodiac raft tours are most adventurous and give you the chance to explore inside sea caves.

Also Consider: Napali Coast Helicopter Tour

1. Napali Coast Snorkeling & Sightseeing Catamaran

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️  400+ 5 star reviews .  Read reviews .

This 6-hour Napali Coast catamaran tour includes snorkeling and the chance to see whales (Dec-April), spinner dolphins, green sea turtles, and other marine life. It’s a great option for anyone who wants to see wildlife, snorkel, and enjoy the Napali coastline from a luxurious catamaran.

The tour departs from Port Allen in the morning and includes a continent breakfast, gourmet lunch, snorkel equipment (and instruction if needed!), plus wine and beer to enjoy on your way back.

2. Napali Coast Zodiac Raft Tour (Most Adventurous)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️  200+ 5 star reviews .  Read reviews .

This wild Napali Coast raft tour is a once-in-a-lifetime type of experience but it’s not for everyone! You’ll zip through sea caves along the Napali Coast and zoom along the coastline, bumping wave over wave. Along the way you’ll get the chance to spot pods of dolphins and maybe even humpback whales (depending on the season), and then snorkel in a turquoise bay.

This Napali zodiac tour is loads of fun for the right person, but if you’re prone to seasickness, want to take lots of photos with a professional camera (without it getting soaked!), or simply want a more comfortable boat tour, choose another Napali coast boat tour.

I went on this catamaran sunset dinner cruise and loved it! I chose the sunset cruise over a day tour because the lighting is better for photos of the Napali Coast, and because the trip is a little shorter and thus easier to squeeze into a short Kauai vacation. It’s perfect if you want to explore Waimea Canyon in the morning and go on this cruise in the late afternoon, which is what I suggest in my 2 day Kauai itinerary .

Dinner is surprisingly excellent (with plenty of vegan and GF options) and there is an unlimited bar with mai tais (made from local Kauai rum), beer, and wine, plus nonalcoholic drinks throughout the cruise. The captain and crew go above and beyond to make sure everyone has a lovely time, and they make sure everyone gets a photo or two with the breathtaking Napali mountains in the background. Then you get to watch the sun go done over the Pacific Ocean before heading back to port!

The downsides of going on the sunset cruise rather than one of the other daytime tours are that (1) the sea conditions can be rougher, and (2) the likelihood of seeing dolphins and other marine life is lower. That said, I am so glad I went on this tour and I definitely recommend it if you want to get the best photos of the Napali Coast!

4. Napali & Ni’ihau Combo Tour (Most Unique & Best Snorkeling)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️  300+ 5 star reviews .  Read reviews .

This Kauai catamaran tour includes both a scenic cruise along the Napali Coast and a journey to Ni’ihau (called the Forbidden Island). You’ll get a look at Niihau, an island very few people ever see, which is illegal to visit but is inhabited by a small group of native Hawaiians. You’ll also see Lehua Crater, a picturequse crescent-shaped crater that is a Hawaii State Wildlife Sanctuary.

Then you’ll get to enjoy some of the best snorkeling in all of Hawaii with crystal clear water, unique underwater formations, and vibrant sea life. You’ll have the chance to see monk seals, manta rays, tropical fish, dolphins, sea turtles, and maybe even whales, depending on the season.

This adventurous full day tour includes all the snorkel gear you need, plus a delicious breakfast and lunch, along with drinks. The captain and staff go above and beyond, and will tell you all about the history of each place you see.

5. Napali Coast Private Charter

If you’re traveling with a group, it might actually make sense to get your own private charter for a day of exploring the Napali Coast. This company has been operating on the Napali Coast for 34 years and they offer private charters in their 40 foot power catamaran for up to 22 people.

The private charter includes the captain and crew, snorkel equipment for everyone, and a delicious lunch. You’ll get the chance to learn about the history of the Hawaiians who lived along the Napali Coast, and stop at waterfalls and sea caves along the way. You’ll also get to snorkel and see marine life such as pods of dolphins, whales (seasonally), sea turtles, and more.

Napali Coast boat tour

6. Nu’alolo Kai Beach Landing Raft Adventure

This is another great Napali Coast raft tour , but with a unique twist — you get to land on a secluded beach that few people ever get to visit on the Napali Coast. Nualolo Kai beach is an ancient Hawaiian fishing village that can only be visited with a special permit and is only accessible by boat.

In addition to getting a guided tour of the archaeological remains at Nualolo Kai beach, you’ll also get to snorkel in the calm protected waters near the beach. As with other raft tours on the Napali Coast, you’ll be in for a wild ride of cruising through sea caves and bumping along the waves. It’s a rewarding tour if you’re up for the adventure!

7. Napali Coast Tour from Hanalei

Almost every single Kauai Napali Coast boat tour leaves from the southern part of the island, near Waimea Canyon. However, there are a few options if you prefer to depart from the North Shore near Hanalei and Princeville: Na Pali Coast Hanalei Tours and Na Pali Catamaran .

Is it better to take a Napali Coast tour from Hanalei or southern Kauai (Port Allen, etc)?

You can experience the rugged beauty of the Napali Coast from either port, there are simply far more tour operators to choose from on the southern part of Kauai. It’s also worth mentioning that there a loading dock in Hanalei Bay, so you have to climb into the boat from the water rather than walk across a bridge onto the boat the way you do when departing from Port Allen. That said, Hanalei is closer to the beginning of the Napali Coast compared to Port Allen, so you spend less time getting to the coast and have more time to enjoy it.

Even though I stayed in Princeville on my recent trip to Kauai, I chose to do a Napali Coast tour that departed from Port Allen because it was the tour that most interested me! I didn’t mind driving extra because I wanted to explore Kauai anyhow.

Kauai Napali Coast Boat Tour FAQs

Is the napali coast worth visiting.

1,000% YES! The Napali Coast is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places on the planet with 4,000-foot cliffs, waterfalls cascading into the ocean, and hidden sea caves just waiting to be explored. If you visit Kauai, you HAVE to see the Napali Coast, it is not worth making the journey all the way to this island if you don’t see its most beautiful site!

Is it better to do a Kauai boat tour, helicopter tour, or hike on the Napali Coast?

All three are excellent options, honestly! In fact, I recommend you do more than one during your Kauai vacation because the Napali Coast is just that special.

If I had to choose one, I’d say go on a helicopter tour of the Napali Coast because it’s the most time efficient and rewarding way to see the coast. This is the Napali helicopter tour I always recommend to friends and family, but I know flying in a helicopter isn’t for everyone.

If you’re interested in hiking, check out the Kalalau Trail, which is possibly the most beautiful hike in Hawaii. You need to make a reservation in advance but it’s well worth it! And yep, the trail is ~11 miles long, but most people only hike the first few miles, which is well worth it in my opinion.

And of course going on a boat tour of the Napali coast is also incredible, as you’ll see in this article there are tons of different types of boat tours to choose from, for every type of traveler.

Is there a 2 hour Napali Coast tour?

Most of Kauai’s Napali Coast boat tours are 4 hours or longer because it take a while to get to the Napali Coast from the port, most tours include snorkeling or a narrated tour of the coast. If you’re short on time, I recommend booking this Napali Coast sunset tour (the one I did!) which lasts 4 hours in the late afternoon so you have the whole morning free to explore Kauai.

The Na Pali Coast of Kauai: 3 Ways to Visit (+ Best 2024 Tours!)

Like this article? Share it with your friends!

Is the Na Pali Coast at the top of your Kauai bucket list? Read on to discover how to visit the jaw-dropping Na Pali coastline in Kauai!

Stretching for 17 sensational miles along the northwestern coast of Kauai, the Na Pali Coast is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes you’ll see anywhere on the planet, and is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii .

Experiencing the beauty of the Na Pali Coast is without a doubt one of the top things to do in Kauai .

You’ve probably seen the jagged spires of the nā pali (“many cliffs” in Hawaiian) rising up beside the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean in photos online — the Na Pali Coast is one of the most photographed places in Hawaii.

With their red, pink, and rust hues contrasting with the rich emerald or light green on the slopes and valleys, the towering coastal cliffs are dramatic, if a little forbidding, in their beauty.

Some of the cliffs rise up almost straight up, as much as 4,000 feet above the ocean.

In between the cliffs are impossibly narrow, and lush, valleys. Incredibly, they were once settled.

The Hawaiians that lived here cultivated taro and other crops on terraces cut into the hillsides, and fished to supplement their diet.

They also traded with other communities, using outrigger canoes to venture out in the summertime when the waters are calmer. The only other way of transport in and out of the valleys was via strenuous foot trails.

Sadly, the population here was drastically impacted by diseases brought in by foreigners, and eventually the Hawaiians that were left on the coast departed for other places, attracted by the potential for an easier lifestyle elsewhere.

Today, even though it is remote, the Na Pali Coast is one of the bucket-list destinations for travelers to Kauai.

The towering cliffs, verdant valleys, beautiful waterfalls, pristine beaches, and picturesque sea arches and caves of the Na Pali Coast are irresistible to anyone that loves the majesty of nature.

For visitors that arrive by boat, or even hikers, there’s the added attraction of seeing marine life in the water.

Spinner dolphins cavorting in the waters are a common sight, and you may see humpback whales in the winter.

Boat tours may also offer the opportunity to snorkel, and you can look for sea turtles in addition to colorful fish and coral .

While visiting the Na Pali Coast is definitely an adventure, a first visit to Kauai isn’t really complete without admiring this place of infinite beauty, provided the weather gods are on your side.

And once you visit, you’ll want to put the Na Pali Coast on your Kauai itinerary every time you visit the Garden Isle!

The Three Ways to Visit the Na Pali Coast of Kauai

There is no road access into the Na Pali Coast.

Currently, you can admire the beauty of the Na Pali Coast in one of three ways: from the air, from the water, or by hiking.

We describe each of the three ways in more detail below.

We’ve done a doors-on helicopter tour over the Na Pali Coast, and we’ve enjoyed a sunset catamaran cruise to the coast. We loved both these ways of experiencing the Na Pali Coast!

A rainbow over the Na Pali Coast of Kauai Hawaii

While we aren’t big hikers, we’ve also hiked a portion of the Kalalau Trail to get up close to the beauty of the coast.

Whichever option you choose for your Napali Coast adventure, note that visiting this beautiful part of the Garden Isle requires some planning!

1. Soar over the Na Pali Coast on a Helicopter Tour

Probably the most thrilling way of experiencing the spectacular beauty of the Na Pali Coast is to take a helicopter tour over Kauai.

Although most Kauai helicopter tours are whole-island tours, you can bet that the Na Pali Coast is high on the flight itinerary on most tours!

The Na Pali Coast of Kauai from a helicopter

If the weather permits, your helicopter pilot will fly low over the serrated ridges, so that you can ooh and aah at the magnificent scenery unfolding beneath you.

Viewing the cliffs, with their red and green hues, rising up by the side of the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean is a thrilling experience that will stay with you for a long time.

You may even fly low enough, or hover, to see the lush narrow valleys up close, waterfalls flowing down the slopes, and the pristine coves that line the coast.

While both doors-on and doors-off helicopter tours offer great views over the Na Pali Coast (most of the photos here were taken on a doors-on tour), there’s no doubt that having nothing between you and the beauty of the Na Pali Coast is quite an experience!

Morning or afternoon flight?

Should you pick a morning flight or an afternoon one? There isn’t a clear-cut answer!

Mornings usually tend to be less prone to weather disruptions. Clouds usually roll in and winds kick up as the day progresses, making later departures more likely to be canceled.

On the other hand, the Na Pali cliffs tend to be in the shadow in the morning. The sun shines on the cliffs in the afternoon, making it much nicer for photography.

If you are a serious photographer, though, check to see what the company you choose for your tour will allow in terms of gear.

Which time of day you choose is up to you, but we suggest booking the tour early in your itinerary so if it does get canceled, you have the option to reschedule before you have to leave!

You can also fly over Kauai in a small aircraft. The slow-flying airplane with large windows is made especially for sightseeing.

2. Admire the Na Pali Coast from a Boat!

Boat tours are by far the most popular way of experiencing the Na Pali Coast.

Not only can you admire the coast at leisure from the water, you may even be able to get close to one of the may Na Pali Coast waterfalls!

One of many Na Pali Coast waterfalls you may see on a boat tour of the coast in Kauai!

While boat tours are still pricey, they aren’t quite as pricey as helicopter tours.

And, one of the advantages of boat tours is that you may see marine life on your way to the Na Pali Coast and back!

Plus, you can choose to snorkel in the turquoise waters if you choose a snorkeling tour .

Boat Tour Departure Points

In the summer, some smaller vessel Na Pali Coast tours depart from Hanalei on the north shore. Year-round, boat tours depart from Port Allen on the south shore.

So no matter when you visit Kauai, weather permitting, you can take a boat tour to the famous coast.

The advantage of departing from Hanalei is that the Na Pali Coast is very close, so you do not spend a lot of time getting to and from the coast. 50-foot catamarans and smaller vessels depart from the north shore.

But the very largest catamarans only depart from Port Allen, so if that’s the type of boat you choose, plan on departing from the south shore.

What type of boat should you choose?

When it comes to Na Pali Coast boat tours, you have several choices. You can pick a large catamaran, a smaller boat, or a raft!

The largest (60-foot) catamarans depart from Port Allen. While you’ll be sharing the boat with more people, larger boats tend to be more stable.

The waters around the Na Pali Coast can get very choppy, so if you prefer a more stable Na Pali Coast boat experience, a larger vessel is definitely the way to go!

The larger boats are also likely to offer more amenities, such as restrooms.

But be aware that the larger boats may not be able to maneuver in and out of sea caves along the coast, or get you close enough to be sprayed by a Na Pali Coast waterfall.

A Na Pali Coast waterfall from the water in Kauai, HI

For a more intimate experience, you can choose a slightly smaller catamaran or other boat, and there are even some sailing options available.

Adventure lovers may want to consider a zodiac raft tour of the Na Pali Coast!

A zodiac raft is an inflatable rigid boat, agile enough to get in and out of the sea caves along the coast, and get under waterfalls, for a much more thrilling and immersive experience.

You’ll also be closer to marine life en route, such as spinner dolphins.

And some raft tours can actually land at Nu’alolo Kai, where you can explore the remains of an ancient Hawaiian fishing village.

On the flip side, however, your ride will be much choppier, so it’s not for visitors that are prone to motion sickness or those with back or neck problems.

Plus, given the small size of the raft (generally about 12-14 people or so), there are no bathrooms or other amenities on board.

And it’s so noisy, with the waves and the motor of the boat, that no commentary is usually possible.

Small boat cruises along the Na Pali Coast of Kauai, HI

Morning or afternoon boat tour?

The waters along the Na Pali Coast are usually calmer in the early morning, so if a stable ride is important, pick a morning tour.

But even on morning tours, by the time you head back, the trade winds will most likely have kicked up, creating some motion on the return journey.

The light is better for photos on afternoon tours, as the sunlight falls on the cliffs during the afternoon, bringing out their colors vividly.

Kayaking the Na Pali Coast

You can also paddle down the Na Pali Coast in the summer, at a time when the surf is small.

On a kayaking tour, you’ll start at Ha’ena, the eastern part of the coast, and end at Polihale Beach, on the western end.

It’s best to join a guided kayaking tour , and you need to be in top shape, a strong swimmer, and experienced kayaker, because it’s not an easy trip.

On a guided tour, you’ll likely have a lunch stop at Miloli’i Beach. Miloli’i, and Kalalau Valley, with a camping permit, are the only two places along the coast where you can legally land.

With an overnight permit, kayakers can camp at either Kalalau Valley, or Miloli’i Valley (only in the summer).

>> Check price and availability for a Na Pali Coast guided kayaking tour now!

3. Hiking the Na Pali Coast

A helicopter tour or a boat tour is a wonderful way to experience the Na Pali Coast, but if you want to get up close to its beauty — see rare plants at touching distance, or swim in the plunge pool of a Na Pali waterfall — then you have to hike!

The Kalalau Trail is the hiking trail that traverses the coast. It’s the only way to access the Na Pali Coast via land.

Kalalau Trail Kauai HI

The epic trail is 11 miles each way, and most hikers do it as a backpacking trip, spending one or more nights at a campsite.

An overnight camping permit is required to hike the trail beyond Hanakapiai Beach, and permits can be obtained here .

Starting at Ke’e Beach in Ha’ena State Park , the trail makes its way through five valleys along the Na Pali Coast and ends at Kalalau Beach, where it is blocked by vertical fluted cliffs.

Along the way, the trail drops down to the ocean at Hanakapiai Beach and then at Kalalau Beach.

The trail is much like the old foot trail that connected settlements here in earlier times!

En route, hikers are treated to glorious views, both over the ocean and along the coast.

Native and introduced Hawaiian plants are abundant along the trail, and many rare and endangered species grow along the cliffs.

Look for wild goats on the cliffs and whales spouting in the waters below in season!

Day Hikes at the Na Pali Coast

Hikers that want to experience the Kalalau Trail but not want to do the entire trail have several day hike options!

You can hike just about one half of a mile to a viewpoint for fabulous views over Ke’e Beach, or hike the moderate to strenuous trail two miles each way to Hanakapiai Beach and back.

A view of Ke'e Beach from the Kalalau Trail in Kauai, HI

And if you want to experience one of the valleys in the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park, you can hike four miles each way to Hanakapiai Falls, one of the best waterfalls in Kauai . You may even be able to slide into the plunge pool here for a dip.

This trail is strenuous and involves detouring inland from the Kalalau Trail at Hanakapiai Beach. There are several stream crossings!

The trailhead for the Kalalau Trail is within Ha’ena State Park , one of the most-visited state parks in Kauai . Entry and parking reservations are required for Ha’ena State Park, and can be obtained here .

Note that visitation to the park is regulated and spots get snapped up as soon as they become available. Stay on top of the reservations calendar to make sure you do not miss out!

We have a detailed guide to visiting Haena State Park that you must read if you plan to visit.

Taking a dip and watching the sun set at Ke’e Beach, one of the best swimming beaches in Kauai , is a great way to end your hiking adventure in the Na Pali Coast!

Tips for Visiting the Na Pali Coast

Get oriented: where is the na pali coast.

The Na Pali Coast is located in the northwest part of the island of Kauai in Hawaii (see map ).

Ha’ena State Park is the eastern end of the coast. From Ke’e Beach, inside Ha’ena State Park, you can actually see the cliffs of the Na Pali Coast.

The trailhead for the Kalalau Trail into the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park also starts by Ke’e Beach.

Polihale Beach in Polihale State Park is the western end of the coast, and you can view the cliffs of the Na Pali Coast from here as well.

You can also admire the Na Pali Coast from viewpoints in Koke’e State Park , which is located along the west coast of Kauai.

Na Pali Coast from Kokee State Park in Kauai, Hawaii

The Kalalau Lookout and the Pu’u O Kila Lookout offer fantastic views into the ridges and valleys of the coast on clear days.

Visit the Na Pali Coast in the summer for the best weather!

Kauai can get very rainy in the winter months, especially along the northern portions of the island.

Since the scenery is the primary reason to visit, and helicopter and boat tours can be expensive, you’ll want to schedule your trip for a time when the weather isn’t likely to dampen your adventure.

Not only is it usually cloudy and rainy in the winter, the ocean is also very rough along the north shore of Kauai, with huge waves.

In fact, boat, raft, and kayak trips to the Na Pali Coast only depart from the north shore during the summer months, because the ocean can get really rough along the north shore in the winter.

Hiking the Na Pali Coast is also more uncomfortable and more dangerous in adverse weather.

For your best shot at a bright sunny day for your Na Pali Coast adventure, plan to visit in the summer, between late May and early September.

The Na Pali Coast of Kauai in Hawaii

Book your Na Pali Coast boat or helicopter tour early in your trip

Weather on Kauai can turn at any time, and both helicopter flights and boat tours are subject to cancelation if weather is unfavorable.

Since admiring the Na Pali Coast is likely high on your wish-list for Kauai, book your boat or aerial tour for as early in your stay as you can.

If your tour does get canceled for some reason, this will give you the opportunity to reschedule or book another tour for a later day in your stay.

Book a morning tour for clearer skies and calmer waters

Mornings on Kauai’s Na Pali Coast tend to be better weather-wise. The ocean is generally calmer, if you are planning a boat tour, and the skies clearer if you are planning an aerial tour.

In the afternoons, clouds usually roll in, and by late morning, swells in the ocean kick up.

Afternoon helicopter or boat tours are usually more apt to be canceled on account of weather than morning tours.

Although our captain was able to get our boat very close to one of the Na Pali Coast waterfalls despite choppy waters, I imagine it’s much easier in the mornings when the waters are calmer.

Vegetation along the Kalalau Trail in Kauai

Book an afternoon tour for better light for photography

If you are very particular about the light for your photos, pick a bright sunny afternoon! When the sun’s rays fall on the cliffs, as they do in the afternoons, the colors of the cliffs look sensational.

In the mornings, the sun is behind the cliffs, so they are in the shadows for the most part.

Bring a rain jacket on your Na Pali Coast boat tour or hike!

On a boat tour of the Na Pali Coast, if the swells kick up, you will likely be sprayed as you travel back and forth.

Bring a light rain jacket with a hood to stay protected, especially if you choose a smaller boat or a raft!

A rain jacket is also useful when you are hiking the Kalalau Trail, as showers (and misty weather) are possible at any time.

Kauai Boat Tours

Holo Holo Blog

Napali coast tours from hanalei, the 2022 summer north shore season has officially commenced, and boy are we ready for a good one.

We’ve been running our Napali Coast raft boat snorkeling tours out of Hanalei since 2012, and each season presents its own difficulties but, to be honest—the last four years have been exceptionally challenging. And it’s not just us; they’ve been exceptionally challenging on all of Hanalei’s businesses. Let us explain what’s been going on…

Napali Coast Boat Tours

Holo Holo Charters is proud to be the only permitted company operating rafts for a Napali Coast Hanalei Tour , because departing from the north shore is a convenient option for many of Kauai’s visitors. However, in addition to our snorkeling and adventurous Napali Coast Hanalei Tours, our company also offers four other unique tours on two other boats– Leila and Holoholo — that both depart out of Port Allen, on the island’s southwest shore.

Napali Coast Tours Departing from Port Allen

Leila is our gorgeous 50’ sailing catamaran. Every morning she takes sightseeing, snorkeling, and sailing trips on the Napali Coast that include breakfast, lunch, beer, wine, and seltzers. This trip is a fantastic option for families and anyone with either an appreciation for sailing or a desire to experience the exhilaration of sailing for the first time. If snorkeling isn’t important to you, you might consider Leila’s sunset dinner sail, which offers a delicious freshly prepared meal, more cocktail options including our Koloa Rum Ginger Mai Tai, and plenty of romantic golden-hour vibes and photo opportunities. Either one you choose, we guarantee you will love our Napali Coast Tours .

Our company’s namesake vessel, Holoholo is a 65’ power catamaran that has been taking guests on daily trips up the Napali Coast, across the Kaulakahi Channel to Lehua Crater and the “Forbidden Island” of Niihau and back, since 1997. This ambitious tour covers more than 90 nautical miles and includes breakfast, lunch, beer, wine, and seltzers. Traveling so far offshore provides the opportunity to see and snorkel with unique ocean species such as manta rays. In the evening, Holoholo takes our guests on beautiful and exciting sunset dinner cruises on the Napali Coast.

Napali Coast Tour Options

There are plenty of options when it comes to Kauai boat tours, but whichever one you decide, we want to assure you that you and your loved ones are in good hands with Holo Holo Charters. Our four boats were designed and built right here on Kauai, specifically for our unique ocean conditions. They’re clean, comfortable, meticulously maintained, and frequently upgraded. Our captains and crew are experienced, knowledgeable, and determined to deliver genuine adventures while prioritizing your safety. From the time you book your trip until the very end of your tour, you will be treated with kindness and aloha.

Let us show you why we’ve been recognized locally and nationally as one of the Best Boat Tours for the last three years. Read about our tours here on the website and please contact our office by phone (808) 335-0815 or email [email protected] with your specific questions. Our friendly front desk staff is more than happy to answer all of your questions and help you choose and book the perfect tour for you . Come enjoy our Napali Coast Hanalei Tours with your family.

The islands that make up Hawaii's archipelago are known for their unique culture, their stunning tropical foliage and their laid-back vibe. Hawaiian beaches are also some of the most beautiful in the world thanks to the tall, swaying palm trees and the dramatic mountain scenery that surrounds them.

Which beaches in Hawaii are worth a visit? Practically all of them, but some feature better scenery or waters for surfing or snorkeling than others. As you start planning your next trip to the gorgeous Hawaiian islands , consider adding a stop to these Hawaiian beaches for a few hours … or a few days.

Poipu Beach: Kauai

Poipu beach park in Kauai, Hawaii.

The island of Kauai is popular due to its mountainous terrain, its verdant and lush landscapes, and its accessible waterfalls. However, the golden sand beaches are also a sight to behold. Once named "America's Best Beach" by the Travel Channel, Poipu Beach is located on the south shore of the island and features a natural ocean wading pool perfect for snorkeling and swimming.

Big Beach (Makena Beach): Maui

Turquoise waves crash on the golden orange shores of Makena Beach in Maui, one of the best Hawaii beaches.

Maui 's Big Beach (also called Makena Beach ) is long, beautiful and wide, with rough waters and stunning mountain views. Visitors can spread out and enjoy plenty of space thanks to the sheer size of the beach, and its shorebreak brings huge swells perfect for surfing, extreme boogie boarding and other water sports.

Hanauma Bay: Oahu

Located within the city of Honolulu , Hanauma Bay is home to an array of tropical fish and other marine life, making it an ideal place for learning about the area's delicate underwater ecosystem via a snorkeling excursion. This nature preserve is so important to locals that tour buses are no longer permitted inside. However, individual travelers can still make the journey to admire this gorgeous stretch of coastline.

Hulopoe Beach: Lanai

A sunny day on Hulopoe Beach, a white sand beach on the island of Lanai, Hawaii

Hulopoe Beach is located in front of the Four Seasons Resort Lanai , one of the premier luxury resorts in all of Hawaii . In addition to its incredible scenery, this beach offers some of the best snorkeling and swimming waters off the coast of Lanai. Polihale Beach: Kauai

The sunset reflects off of the ocean and golden sands of Polihale Beach in Kauai, Hawaii

Polihale Beach is located within Kauai's Polihale State Park, and it's known for its amazing sunsets and jaw-dropping views of the famous Napali Coast . This stretch of coastline is perfect for families who want to enjoy a picnic or relax in a remarkably natural setting. Plus, swimming is possible when ocean conditions are calm.

Kahalu'u Beach: Big Island

The black sand and striking teal waters of Kahalu'u Beach makes it one of the best Hawaii beaches to visit

Located on the Kona coast near the town center of Kailua-Kona, Kahalu'u Beach boasts an array of marine animals that range from sea turtles to tropical fish. This makes the beach ideal for snorkeling and learning about the ocean, although rocks near the shore necessitate water shoes. Rougher waters not far from the shore also make this beach a popular spot for surfers.

Ko Olina Beach: Oahu

An aerial view of Ko Olina Beach on the island of Oahu, Hawaii

Ko Olina Beach is home to several resorts, including the Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina and Marriott's Ko Olina Beach Club, and is made up of four different lagoons that are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. While the beaches here are privately owned, travelers can visit and daily parking is available. Many activities like scuba diving and surfing are prohibited, but the beach is worth a visit thanks to its ample ocean wildlife and clear waters.

Pa'iloa Beach: Maui

Pa'iloa Beach (also known as Honokalani Beach) features jet black sand, green trees and striking blue water

Maui's Pa'iloa Beach (also known as Honokalani Beach) is located along the Road to Hana within Waianapanapa State Park , and is only accessible with park reservations. However, the trip will be worth it thanks to the beach's startling black sand and clear turquoise waters. Polihua Beach: Lanai

Turquoise water laps on to the golden sand of Polihua Beach, one of the best Hawaii beaches, on Lanai

Located on the northern shore of Lanai, secluded Polihua Beach is harder to reach than some of the other top beaches in Hawaii (accessing it requires a four-wheel drive vehicle or a professional guide). However, this beach is 2 miles long and blissfully empty, making it perfect for sunbathing or enjoying the views without any crowds. Strong ocean currents make the waters along Polihua Beach too dangerous for swimming, but it's still a great place to get away from it all.

Punalu'u Black Sand Beach: Big Island

Punalu'u Black Sand Beach with charcoal-colored sand is framed by green palm trees and a frothy ocean

If you're eager to see a unique black sand beach, the Punalu'u Black Sand Beach on the island of Hawaii should be on your radar. This beach is located between the towns of Pahala and Naalehu in Kau, so it's easily accessible. Wailea Beach: Maui

Beautiful and vibrant sunset at Wailea Beach, a top beach in Maui, Hawaii

Known for drawing in lots of tourists, this stretch of coastline boasts many upscale eateries featuring gourmet cuisine and fresh seafood. This beach is also home to an array of popular resorts, from the Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort to the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea .

Waimanalo Beach: Oahu

White sand and light blue water in Waimanalo Beach, Hawaii

Waimanalo Beach is not very popular with tourists, but it's not due to a lack of beauty. This beach on the island's southeastern shore is a sight to behold thanks to its powder white sand, mountainous backdrop and azure ocean waters. There aren't any amenities here, but what the beach lacks in facilities it more than makes up for in its peaceful atmosphere.

Makalawena Beach: Big Island

A view of tropical Makalawena Beach, located on the West Coast of the Big Island, Hawaii. Peaceful and scenic, rows of palm trees make this one of the best beaches in Hawaii.

The Big Island's Makalawena Beach is popular with hikers, and it's easy to see why. As part of Kekaha Kai State Park, this beach is not accessible by car, meaning it's less frequented by tourists. If you do decide to make the 4.5-mile trek to the beach along the Ala Kahakai Trail, you'll be rewarded with a palm-lined shoreline, plenty of shade trees and astonishing natural beauty in every direction.

Lanikai Beach: Oahu

While parking can be limited, the calm waters found here make this beach a family-friendly gem.

Kalapaki Beach: Kauai

A beautiful view of Kalapaki Beach in Kauai, with palm trees and mountains in the distance

Kalapaki Beach sits behind a protected break wall directly next to Marriott's Kaua'i Beach Club , making it convenient for hotel guests who don't want to drive. This beach is ideal for swimming, stand-up paddleboarding and learning to surf, yet you'll also find visitors sunbathing and playing beach volleyball.

Sunset Beach: Oahu

A cotton candy colored sky with a sandy beach and calm waves at Sunset Beach in Oahu, one of the best Hawaii beaches

Oahu's Sunset Beach is not only aesthetically pleasing, but it's perfect for active vacationers who want to take part in water sports like surfing and boogie boarding. This North Shore beach is also easy to visit by car thanks to its location near the town of Haleiwa south of Waimea Bay. Parking is available across the street from the beach, as well as basic facilities like restrooms and showers.

Hapuna Beach: Big Island

An aerial view of Hapuna Beach, with white sand, green trees and teal water

Hapuna Beach is located within Hapuna Beach State Park on the Big Island, and it's one of the area's largest white sand treasures. This postcard-perfect beach tends to offer excellent conditions for swimming, as well as calm water activities like stand-up paddleboarding and snorkeling. You can even see whales migrating along the coast during part of the year (most often from January to March), and amenities like food vendors, restrooms and showers will make your visit more comfortable.

Papohaku Beach: Molokai

The wide white sand beach of Papohaku Beach on the island of Molokai, Hawaii

Papohaku Beach is located on the island of Molokai, and it's one of the longest and widest white sand beaches in all of Hawaii. Families love to camp along the broad expanse of this beach year-round, and picnic and restroom facilities are found on-site. While swimming is safe for part of the year, visitors should avoid getting in the water here from October through March.

Papakolea Beach: Big Island

The green sand beach at Papakolea Beach is surrounded by rocky gray cliffs and blue ocean waves

After you've visited a few of Hawaii's black sand beaches Papakolea Beach, also known as Green Sand Beach, should be next on your list. While this unique shore on Hawaii's Big Island offers no amenities and often experiences a strong surf that makes for dangerous swimming conditions, it's worth a visit just to view the stark contrast of the green sand, which is made that way by a common mineral called olivine. Note that reaching the shoreline requires a hike from the parking lot and that there is little to no shade along the way.

Waikiki Beach: Oahu

Beautiful Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii, is flanked by a row of hotels. The striking turquoise water features a few surfers and waves.

Waikiki Beach is located along the south shore of Honolulu, which boasts many of Oahu's most fabulous hotels and resorts, including Halekulani and The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort, Waikiki . This means you'll share the sand with thousands of tourists in the area, but that you'll also be able to find dining and entertainment with ease. Not only does Waikiki Beach stand in the shadows of the beautiful Diamond Head landmark, but it's also an ideal spot for swimming, snorkeling and surfing lessons for beginners.
