All about the Clásico on the 2024 US Tour

FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are once again going to be playing each other in the United States, this time on Saturday 3 August at a time to be confirmed. This game will come after the one with Manchester City, with another to come against AC Milan before heading back to Europe.

The stage will be the MetLife Stadium , New Jersey, which holds 82,500 spectators. Opened in 2010, it is where the New York Giants and New York Jets play in the NFL, and will also be hosting games in the Copa America this summer and in the World Cup in 2026. Barça are returning here after beating Juventus 2-1 at the same place on 22 July 2017.

The MetLife Stadium is built on the same site as its predecessor, the Giants Stadium, where Barça played no fewer than four times, losing to New York Cosmos (5-3), drawing with Fluminense (2-2) and twice beating the New York Red Bulls (4-1 and 6-2).

Previous friendlies with Real Madrid

The sides have played 34 friendly matches over the years, and Barça have won an amazing 21 of those, with 9 draws and just four defeats, with an 85-41 goal differential. These include 22 games (14 in Barcelona and 8 in Madrid) played between 1906 and 1943, as well as those in the Champion Clubs Tournament (1928), Historic Clubs Tournament (1948), the Ramón de Carranza (1969) and the Venezuelan President's Cup (1982). 

This is the fourth time the two sides have met in the US and Barça won the previous three. The first on 30 July 2017 in Miami was a 3-2 victory with the winner scored by Gerard Piqué. Then on 23 July 2022 Raphinha got the only goal in a 1-0 win in Vegas, and last summer in Texas, Dembélé, Ferran Torres and Fermín López scored the goals in a 3-0 win.

Clásicos are synonymous with some of the biggest names in the football world, and this one will be no exception. Real Madrid, masterminded by Carlo Ancelotti, have the luxury of such extraordinary talents as Bellingham, Vinicius, Militao and Courtois.

Barcelona will once again return to the United States this summer as the club embarks on a four-game preseason tour.

The Blaugrana will focus on the western portion of the country, with two games in California, one in Las Vegas and a much-anticipated El Clásico matchup with Real Madrid in Texas.

This summer’s U.S. tour will be part of the Soccer Champions Tour , which also includes Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan, Arsenal and Manchester United.

Barcelona has toured the U.S. on 13 previous occasions, including 2011, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022. Last summer saw another El Clásico on U.S. soil, which took place in Las Vegas.

For the third summer in a row, Barcelona will tour the United States.

Three high-profile friendlies are on the agenda, as Barcelona will take part in the Soccer Champions Tour for a second straight year. The preseason competition also includes Real Madrid, Chelsea, AC Milan, and Manchester City.

Once again, the marquee event of Barça's tour will be a preseason El Clásico against Barcelona, with this year's edition taking place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

It will be the third consecutive preseason Clásico on U.S. soil, after the teams met in Arlington, Texas last year. Overall, it will be the fourth time Real Madrid and Barcelona have met on U.S. soil

FC Barcelona confirmed the official calendar of its 2023 pre-season tour. For the second consecutive year, the club will play four friendlies in the United States between July 23 and August 1

FC Barcelona embarks today on a highly anticipated tour of the United States . This year's tour will feature captivating friendly matches against renowned teams such as Juventus , Arsenal , Real Madrid , and AC Milan . Unlike the previous year, where the tour primarily focused on the eastern part of the country, this time Barcelona's tour will revolve around the western region, with particular emphasis on Los Angeles.

The team is scheduled to arrive at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) this Wednesday, marking the beginning of their American journey. They will establish their base in the vibrant city of Los Angeles until July 28, although the first match against Juventus will take place at the Levi's Stadium , located south of San Francisco, on July 22 . Following the game, the team will promptly return to Los Angeles.

Next in line is a thrilling encounter against Arsenal on July 26 , which will be held at the state-of-the-art SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Los Angeles. This will be the first meeting between Barcelona and Arsenal since their memorable clash in the 2016 UEFA Champions League round of 16, where the Catalans emerged victorious with an impressive 5-2 aggregate score.

Barcelona is taking part in another US tour this upcoming summer, and tickets are now available for the club’s three-game slate. The Spanish side will be under new management when Xavi steps down at the end of the season. Therefore, the friendlies in the United States will be one of the first times supporters will have the chance to see the new boss. In addition to spectating Barcelona’s promising crop of young stars, the opposition will draw crowds for each of the games.

Barcelona is playing several familiar opponents across its three games in late July and early August. For example, Barcelona will play Manchester City, with the two intertwined in recent transfer windows. Plus, City manager Pep Guardiola has a lengthy history with the club. Also, Barcelona is playing Christian Pulisic and AC Milan in Baltimore. However, the marquee game yet again in Barcelona’s trip to the United States is another edition of El Clasico. For the third year in a row, Barcelona will play Real Madrid in the United States.

In the last two years, Barcelona has spent most of the time out west. Frequent stops in Las Vegas, Texas and California have allowed fans on that side of the country to see Barcelona in action. The first of which is Camping World Stadium, which has hosted friendlies in 2022 and 2023. Then, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, is the latest home for El Clasico. It joins the metro areas of Las Vegas, Dallas and Miami to have hosted this fixture. Finally, M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, MD, hosts its first friendly in two years. It is Barcelona’s first trip to both Camping World Stadium and M&T Bank Stadium. The Catalan club previously played at MetLife Stadium in 2017.

Just like Barcelona, each of the three teams the Catalans are playing has a schedule of games across the United States. For example, Manchester City is playing four games, while Milan and Real Madrid match Barcelona with three games. Most of these games are part of the Soccer Champions Tou r, a collection of club friendlies involving some of the top teams in Europe.

However, the action does not stop with these European giants. Fellow popular clubs Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal are playing friendlies in the United States. Aston Villa is joining the Premier League teams in playing games in the United States.

One of the main attractions of Barcelona’s pre-season is the arrival of midfielder Ilkay Gündogan. The former Manchester City man has proven in recent seasons under Pep Guardiola to be a world-class midfielder, and now it is time to see how Xavi Hernández will include him in his side.

The Blaugrana squad meet up for pre-season today (10 July) in Sant Joan Despí. The players will undergo medical tests after the holidays and will return to training before the start of their tour of the United States.

Last summer Barcelona opted to cross the Atlantic for their summer preparation, and will do the same again this year, travelling to the US to play four friendly matches. Xavi will be able to test his squad against four big European sides, including a Clásico which, despite being a friendly, adds a bit of spice to Barça’s US tour.

When are Barcelona’s pre-season matches?

The Blaugrana will play their first pre-season friendly against Juventus in California. The full squad is expected to be available against La Vechia Signora. Four days later, the second friendly of the tour will be played against Arsenal, also in California. The schedule for both matches is yet to be determined.

Pre-season Clásico on 29 July

Real Madrid and Barcelona will face each other on 29 July in Dallas. The record is good for Xavi’s side. In the two matches that have been played on North American soil, they have beaten Los Blancos on both occasions.

Barça’s final pre-season game will be played on 1 August against AC Milan, also in Dallas, with the time still to be determined. This will be the last test before returning to Spain to begin the 2023-24 season.

The Joan Gamper trophy

The Blaugrana will also have to find a date between their return from the United States and the league opener against Getafe on Sunday 13 August to play the traditional pre-season Joan Gamper trophy match. The club have yet to release any official date for the game.
