About Malta

The Maltese Archipelago comprising of Malta, Gozo and Comino lie just 90 kilometres south of Sicily and 350 kilometres north of the African coast. They offer little natural resources but possess natural, deep and well-protected harbours and it was precisely for this reason why the different Mediterranean powers, whether for trade or for control, always desired to occupy these islands. The earliest settlement of the islands is believed to be around 5200BC, evidence of which can be found in natural caves such as Ghar Dalam (meaning Dark Cave), Skorba and Ta’Hagrat which where actually open air villages. Around 3600BC early man started to erect megalithic structures which brought about an incredible Temple building period. The main temples include Hagar Qim and Mnajdra, Tarxien and of course the largest free standing megalithic structure in the world, Ggantija. Other unique structures including the Hypogeum and the Xaghra Stone Circle indicate large necropolises catering for area communities. The Temple Culture came to an end around 2500BC. Throughout the years our islands have been occupied by a number of different civilisations. One of the earliest were the Phoenicians from Lebanon (Syria), traders who made good use of Malta’s excellent harbours. The Phoenicians were followed by the Carthaginians and during the Second Punic War 218BC Malta was taken over by the Romans. The most important event during the Roman period was the shipwreck of St Paul the Apostle as told in the Acts of the Apostles 27 and 28. Traditionally it is believed St Paul introduced Christianity into Malta. The main sites connected with the saint's visit include St Paul’s Grotto, San Pawl Milqi (Roman Villa), St Paul’s Shipwreck Church and St Paul’s Cathedral & Museum in Mdina. Other interesting sites related to Roman period include large complexes of tombs, ‘catacombs’ which were used by religious communities. Worth visiting are St Paul’s Catacombs and St Agatha’s Catacombs both in Rabat. The long Roman occupation lasted until 535AD when it finally fell under Byzantine rule, later under Arab rule and then Aragonese rule until the 16th century. In 1530 the Order of St John arrived in Malta, this was the start to a 268 year rule by the Military and Hospitaller Order of St John. During their time the Knights offered the islands security, medication and jobs. This was the start of a Golden era for the Maltese Islands. The Order settled in the harbour, in a small seaside village called Birgu. They built a magnificent line of fortifications to provide adequate defence in case of attacks such as the Great Siege of 1565 when the mighty Turkish Armada was defeated. They continued to fortify the harbour and on 28th March 1566 the foundation stone of the new city of Valletta was laid. They added magnificent palaces, theatres, churches and gardens all of which you can see today. Do not miss St. John's Co. Cathedral which was the conventual church of the Order, the Grand Masters Palace and the beautiful Upper Barraka Gardens from where you can admire stunning views of the spectacular harbour. Under the Order’s rule the Maltese Islands flourished however this came to an end in 1798 when in June of that year Napoleon’s fleet cast anchor off the islands and launched an invasion. In a few hours the Order capitulated and Napoleon entered Valletta. During his short sojourn of 6 days he issued rules and regulations which the Maltese were not happy with. In fact after a few months the Maltese rose up in revolt and asked the British for help. The French troops were blockaded inside Valletta. Two years siege followed until the French capitulated and the British took over Malta. The British took the islands into the 20th century, during which time there were two world wars, independence, formation of a republic and the closure of the British bases. The largest natural harbour in the Mediterranean was excellent for the needs of the British fleet so much so that it became its home port and major modern developments took shape. During the First World War Malta was nicknamed “nurse of the Mediterranean” but the Second World War was to be a completely different story. The day after Mussolini declared war on Britain and its allies in June 1940, Malta had suffered its first attack from the air. 16,000 tons of bombs fell on the island during the war, with a loss of 35,000 buildings and over 6000 casualties. In 1942 Malta and its people were awarded the George Cross by King George VI as an official recognition of the island’s courage. This cross is part of the national flag. After the war, the political situation changed drastically. The Maltese were asking for more representational government and a much more liberal constitution. This political work was to lead to the granting of independence from Britain on 21st September 1964. On 13th December 1974 Malta was declared a republic within the Commonwealth, thus retaining the connection with Britain. Five years later, on 31st March 1979, there was the final closure of the British base in Malta. Finally, for the very first time, no foreign troops were stationed on the islands.  Malta is a member of the United Nations and also of the Commonwealth. Moreover, in May 2004 it joined the European Union.

Don’t let the fact that Malta is one of the world’s smallest countries put you off, because there are plenty of surprises packed into this unassuming outcrop of rock in the central Mediterranean Sea. For one, its history is a story of nearly 8,000 years, ranging back to the arrival of tribal groups from Sicily in the 5th millennium BC and incorporating a veritable range of cultural influences, from the ancient Phoenicians to the North African Muslim Moors. Consequently, today Malta boasts a wealth of prehistoric sites like no other Island in the region, and guests should be sure not to miss the subterranean sepulchre at Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, or the sprawling remnants of World War II forts that dot the cliffs around the coast.  But it’s not all about looking back in time here, and today’s Malta tour guides are quick to direct visitors to the beautiful baroque capital of Valletta, where shiny new government complexes rub shoulders with elaborate churches from the 17th century. What’s more, the caves and coves of Malta’s coast are famed for their wild appearance and rugged character, making them a real haven for divers and shore swimmers after something a little different from the typical seaside destinations on the Med.

What other guests say about our tours and locals

Fabulous tour

"Victoria was delightful company and gave us the greatest insight of Valletta that we could have hoped for. Given all the things she shared with us we have our entire week full of things to do. Highly recommend everyone who is visiting to spend some time with a guide like Victoria. Thank you. "

local Victoria

Brilliant fun

"We really enjoyed our tour with Victoria. She showed us some great places for food and drink. Communications were great. Would recommend. "

guest Renarta

A lovely walk!

"Vicky met us in Valetta and showed us aroud the not so touristy spots which we enjoyed greatly. Lots of history and little details made for a wonderful walk. The only thing to improve would perhaps be to indeed guide for the full 3 hours. She had to return to her family but left us with a great recommendation for a lunch!"

guest Evert

Tastefully done

"What a treat!!!! Both Josefa and her delicious tour of Malta. Charming wiman with an encyclopedia of knowledge of both Malta's history and food. Every minute was a treat.. Highly recommend."

local Josefa

Amazing guide, fun and knowledgeable

"We had a brilliant morning in Valetta with Ilona. She was so friendly and knowledgeable about all things Malta and clearly loves where she lives. She put us at ease straight away with a warm welcome and we knew we were in good hands for our walking tour. As well as learning a lot about the history of Valetta, Ilona was also happy to discuss some of the more sensitive topics around the culture and changes she has witnessed in Malta since moving there. This was really refreshing and is why we find these one on one tours so valuable as part of our stay in a new place. Ilona pointed out plenty of useful hints and tips about the city and island which we went back and explored further during our trip. She even booked us a restaurant for our anniversary and her recommendation was spot on. We would highly recommend the tour with Ilona as your guide. 10/10."

local Ilona

Review about Ilona

"The tour of with Ilona was an amazing experience. Per request she amended the tour to include Birgu, since I didn't see this place on my former visits. Next to the history of Valletta and Birgu she gave interesting personal insights into the life in Malta. "

guest Samuel

A fantastic, laid back tour

"We had a wonderful time in this tour. We tried so many delicious dishes (many of which we'd never be brave enough to order normally) We were taken to a number of lovely places with some real hidden gems. I'd recommend Josefa as she made sure we had an excellent time, we didn't feel rushed and she was very good with my 3 year old son. Thanks again for a great time!"

guest Tom

Wonderful Day with Ilona

"So far, With Locals tours are 3 for 3! Ilona is not a native of Malta, but she has made it her home for 8 years and knows a lot. It is obvious that she loves Valetta and is knowledgeable about the history of the island. She is friendly, down-to-earth, flexible, fun and entertaining. She really tailored our time to what we wanted to see, and took us to more local areas away from the crowds. We stopped at a cafe and got pistachio pastries and espresso/cappuccino (mine with Sambucca) which was delicious. If you are looking for a detailed historical tour with hundreds of exact dates and facts, this is not for you. But if you want a tour that shows you Valleta and gives you an understanding of the history of the city and of Malta without getting deep in the details, then we highly recommend you book with Ilona. "

guest Bob

Food tour with Josefa

"We were 4 friends who had a lovely evening with Josefa in Valleta. It felt like being with a fifth friend. Josefa is very easy to talk to and very knowledgeable about all sorts of things to do with Malta. We tried some local dishes which we wouldn't have even known about without a guide. It's also brilliant to do a tour like this on your first day as it gives you your bearings for the rest of your trip and other great ideas for what to see and do. Definitely recommend!"

guest Helen

Review about Victoria

"The tour was wonderful! Our team liked everything very very much ❤️ Victoria is a wonderful guide who knows her business very well! I'm sure we'll use her services more than once. Thank you Victoria 🫶🏻"

Malta Tours & Vacations

View of Paola City from Valletta Waterfront with boats in the harbour on a sunny day in Malta

Floating smack-bang and isolated in the middle of the shimmering Mediterranean Sea, minuscule Malta trots along to a charmingly laid back pace.

A consortium of 3 bite-sized islands containing countless blue water lagoons backed by stunning surrounds, the country presents a beguiling mish-mash of Arabic and European languages, architecture, cuisine and traditions - the legacy of having been alternately raided, invaded, or occupied by virtually every Western power to have attained conquering capacities over the past 2,000 years. Little wonder then that the locals are so versed in sharing their island’s spoils with the latest foreign hordes to reach their shores.

Best time to visit malta.

Malta’s summer season - stretching from April right through to October - is the best time to visit, with daytime temperatures generally sitting in the high 60s that are tempered by sea breezes along the coast.

Over July and August, the temperatures can climb above 80 degrees F - perfect for some, unpleasant for others.

From November to March, temperatures range around 60 degrees F and it can be quite rainy in December and January.

Geography and environment

Malta’s largest island (which goes by the same name) consists of low-lying, hilly and mostly arid terrain covered by terraced fields and bounded by a rugged coastline of coves, harbors and beaches.

Gozo is noticeably greener and more densely vegetated, with craggy cliffs and flat-topped hills.

Top 5 movies shot in Malta

1. gladiator.

Fans of Ridley Scott’s historical Roman epic, charting the rise, fall, rise and death of wronged General Maximus Decimus Meridius (played by Russell Crowe) will be interested to hear that the scenes of Ancient Rome and the Colosseum were actually shot in neither. Instead, a million dollar replica of the city and its illustrious fighting stadium were constructed and filmed in Malta’s Fort Ricasoli. The film, which dominated the 73rd Academy Awards, included some brilliant scenes of Crowe doing somersaults while battling tigers.

Starring Brad Pitt and Australia’s own Eric Bana, Wolfgang Peterson’s loose adaptation of Homer’s Iliad was shot almost exclusively in Malta’s Mellieha, Fort Ricasoli and on Malta’s sister island Comino. An epic tale of wanton murder and betrayal, fueled by an illicit royal affair, the film was purportedly produced on a budget of approximately $175 million – making it one of the most expensive ever made. In a damning demonstration that people learn nothing from history, the Turkish town of Canakkale accepted Pitt's gifting of the giant Trojan Horse maquette used in the film.

3. World War Z

When a zombie outbreak threatens the planet’s very existence, United Nations worker Gerry Lane (played by Malta-crazy Brad Pitt) decides to step in. Citing inspiration from All the President’s Men and The Bourne Identity, this 'politically-penetrating apocalyptic horror film' featured scenes shot in Malta’s Valletta, Cospicua, Vittoriosa and Senglea.

4. Orca - The Killer Whale

A captivating piece of 70s filmmaking wizardry, Orca: The Killer Whale tells the tale of a great white shark hunt gone horribly wrong. Captain Nolan, a salty Irish seadog looking to return to the country of his birth, accepts one last job to catch a great white shark for a local aquarium. But just as he is about to catch the shark, which is about to kill a canoeing scientist named Ken, a killer whale appears out of nowhere and kills the shark. Infuriated, Nolan harpoons the whale, but hits the wrong one – the whale's pregnant whale girlfriend! Understandably irate, the canny Orca bachelor now sets out laying waste to the entire fishing village; sinking boats, exploding the community’s fuel reserves, and chomping Nolan’s friend’s leg off when he attacks their seaside dwelling. The final, nail-biting scene, in which the Killer Orca lures Nolan out to the remote polar region of Labrador and sinks his boat by knocking an iceberg into it, was fabricated and filmed off the coast of Malta.

5. Swept Away

Popularly lauded as one of the worst movies ever made, Guy Ritchie’s Swept Away – starring his then-wife Madonna – marked the director’s filmmaking nadir. A right box-office disaster, the film scooped the 2002 Raspberry Awards and was the only movie ever to have won both Worst Picture and Worst remake or Sequel. What the film does have going for it is the setting, with Blue Lagoon, Vittoriosa and Mdina all featuring prominently as the stunning backdrop to the mismatched couple’s shipwrecked shenanigans.

Malta Tours & Travel

Malta Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Sailing into Malta is like taking a trip back to the Middle Ages -- the skyline of the walled Maltese capital, Valletta, is a flurry of domes, turrets and spires, mostly built by the Knights of St. John, whose origins were in the Crusades. Situated in the mid-Mediterranean between Sicily and Tunisia, Malta has two main islands (the smaller being Gozo), intriguing cities, and plenty of history to explore, with both European and North African influences.

What is there to do in Malta?

Malta is filled with adventure year round. What visitors might do depends on the season, but regardless of what time of year you visit, there’s loads to do.

1. Eat fish from the market – in Marsaxlokk, each Sunday, there is an open air market where both tourists and locals go to buy the local fish. Spend the day walking around the fishing village, with boats and restaurants lining the shore. Visit one of the local restaurants to indulge in the “catch,” or purchase some to cook up at home. The market boasts more than just fish. There are bars, shops, and it’s a great place to buy souvenirs!

2. Visit the film location of Popeye – did you know the movie Popeye was filmed in Malta? You can visit the set, and popeye village. Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by Popeye, before entering a land of fun. Play on the water trampolines, take a boat ride, go to the indoor jump around, and for the adults, enjoy some wine.

3. Wine Tasting – on an extended note from Popeye’s village, Malta is surprisingly a wine growing region! One of the more popular wineries is the Meridiana wine estate on the northern end of the island. Spend the day sipping on some local Maltese wines.

4. Spend some time in the water – whether you’re looking to swim, snorkel, or sail on a boat, you have endless opportunities for some water action. Head over to the island of Comino and swim in the blue lagoon. The island is car free, and visitors are met with alluring azure waters.

5. Another island (that’s a bit more populated where you can stay overnight) is Gozo island. Gozo also offers incredible azure waters, there’s a natural pool to soak in.

6. There are plenty of beaches to visit, and if you’re there in the warmer months, it’s a must! If you’re traveling with kids, consider checking out Mellieha Bay or Pretty Bay. Both offer shallow water, great for young kids. Water sports are plenty at Golden Bay, but with that comes many tourists. Some of the most scenic beaches include Ghajn Tuffieha Bay, and San Blas Bay. San Blas is a bit more secluded as it’s only reachable from walking.

7. Malta offers some of the best scuba diving in all of Europe ! Explore marine life, see sunken ships, and caves! There is scuba diving both beginners and those who are more experienced. Both offer beautiful scenery. If underwater diving isn’t your thing, there are other water sports options. There’s parasailing, paddling, jet skiing, or sailing. All are great options and fun ways to explore Malta.

8. Enjoy the views from Upper Barrakka Gardens – take a walk along the gardens and enjoy the beautiful landscape and the view of Valletta, Malta’s capital city. The gardens offer a panoramic view of the Grand Harbour and the rest of the city, and it’s free!

9. Visit the three cities – the three cities; Birgu, Senglea, and Cospicua are worth a visit to learn about the history of Malta. The cities also offer an incredible view of the grand harbor (right near the Barrakka Gardens!) It’s easy to take the water taxi from Valletta, with a quick 7 minute trip across the water. They are also accessible by bus and car.

10. Walk around the former Capital of Malt a – Before Valletta took over as the capital city, Mdina was the capital. Any history lover should visit Mdina and it’s historical monuments, including St. Paul’s Cathedral, and the Vilhena Palace. Mdina is a great getaway from city life. Many visitors love the city for it’s charm and quiet streets. They don’t call it “the silent city” for nothing!

Island h=Hopping in Malta

Malta is the main island, and it is home of the capital city Valletta. There is lots to do on the “main island” but the other islands are worth exploring as well! North of Malta is Comino Island, and while there aren’t really people living there, it’s worth a visit. There are no cars.

The island is pretty small, clocking in at less than 4 square kilometers. This is an easy day trip. The other popular island in Malta is Gozo, which is more inhabited. The ferry ride is quick between Gozo and Malta island (about twenty minutes).

Gozo is more secluded and  on the calmer side, offering great opportunities for rest and relaxation. There are still things to do in Gozo, most in the form of getting our doors and soaking in the scenic landscape.

Cities in Malta

There are a couple top cities that visitors spend time in when visiting Malta. Luckily, the country isn’t too large, so it’s easy to have a home base (or two) and hop around to visit various cities within Malta.

Some of the popular cities are:

1. Valletta – the country’s capital. A great place to stay when first arriving in Malta, since it’s near the airport. The capital is filled with bustle – restaurants, bars, shops, things to do. Consider making Valletta a home base for at least part of the trip, especially if you’re relying on public transportation.

2. Victoria is the capital of Gozo, so it shares the similarities of Valletta, just on a bit smaller scale. There is no lack of shops, restaurants, and transportation. Another great hub if you’re spending a few nights on Gozo island. Though if time is limited, Victoria is an easy day trip with a quick ferry ride to Valletta.

3. Mdina is another popular city in Malta. The medieval city, also known as the silent city, is quiet with limited cars on the streets. The city is full of historical attractions. The city of Rabat has a similar vibe. Both cities are “in-land” cities, so you’re a bit off the water, giving you a bit more of a secluded feel.

Souvenirs from Malta

One of the most exciting parts of a trip is bringing home souvenirs for your loved ones (and for yourself) to remember your exciting adventure! Below are some of the most popular souvenirs people purchase on their Malta vacation:

1.  Blown glass : Many artists love to practice their glassblowing technique and create unique pieces. These make for awesome gifts! They’re one of a kind, you’re supporting local artists, and you get a beautiful memory of your trip. Pick up some candle holders, vases, or centerpieces for your table.

2.  Nougat : A sweet treat is always a welcomed gift! Nougat is extremely popular in Malta. The treat is so popular, you’ll have no difficulty finding nougat stalls along the streets.

3.  Pottery and Ceramics : Blown glass is not the only beautiful handcrafted piece you can take home! Remember your Mediterranean adventure with some local pottery. The mix of Mediterranean colors and designs will carry that European sea-vibe home with you.

Historic sights in Malta

Malta is filled with historic sites. Of course, you can venture to Mdina, the historical ex-capital city, to learn about the history of Malta. Beyond Mdina, you can find plenty of historical locations throughout Malta.

1. Ggantija Temples – One of the most important historical sites in Malta, there is no question why this site is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. They date back between 3600 and 3200, but have been well preserved.

2. St. John’s Co-Cathedral – originally built in 1572, the cathedral went under a remodel in the 17 th century that helped create the gorgeous architecture that is seen today. This is a great place to visit if you have any interest in the history of the Knights. The cathedral is home to some immaculate fine art, including pieces by Caraviggio.

3. Fort Rinella – The world’s first mechanical was built in 1878. Visitors can see the progress of mechanical advancement through the fort. Make sure to stay and watch a live re-enactment of numerous events through an animated tour.

4. Grandmasters Palace – also referred to as “the palace,” the Grandmasters palace is the seat of government. Visiting the palace allows guests to learn about the political history of Malta. Don’t forget to make a stop at the armory, where the weapons used by the Knights are held.

5. Auberge de Castille – Another great site to visit if you’re interested in the Knights. The Auberge de Castille was built in Valletta in 1574. Perched on the highest point in the city, this was where the Knights called home. Ruined during WWII, the castille has been restored, still boasting incredible architecture.

Malta Cuisine

One of the best parts of going on a trip is trying new delicious food! Malta has some pretty unique but delicious treats, so make sure to check out some of these on your trip:

1. Pastizzi – a savoury pastry that is a popular snack among the streets of Malta. A breaded ball often filled with ricotta or mashed peas.

2. Timpana is a macaroni pie that’s baked until golden. This delicious dish is filled with meats, cheese, vegetables and pastry crust.

3. Prickly pears – basically seems like a combination fruit. The outside looks like a melon mixed with a cactus. Bite inside and you’ll get flavors of watermelon, fig, and strawberry.

4. Cassata – a sweet treat that originated in southern Italy. Marzipan, almond paste and ricotta combine to make this delicious cake.

Things to Do in Malta: A Complete Guide

Things to Do in Malta: A Complete Guide

Not too far south of Italy is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. A crossroad of cultures boasting towering cathedrals, epic fortresses, bustling markets, and breathtaking views… there’s plenty to discover in Malta. Whether you’re visiting for just a few days or you have a little bit longer, this article will cover how to make the most of your trip, featuring all of the must-sees as well as some little-known gems on the island. However, before we explore the top things to do in Malta, let’s run through the island’s background:

  • What language is spoken in Malta? Malta has two official languages, Maltese and English. However, over 60% of the island speaks Italian to a conversational level.
  • Is Malta part of the UK? Malta has a long history of colonisation and was most recently a British colony. Strolling through the streets of the capital you might even come across some of the iconic red telephone booths, evidence of British colonial influence. However, the country has been independent since 1964.
  • Is Malta an island? Malta consists of three main islands and some smaller islets. Malta and Gozo are the largest, and in between is Comino, the smallest.
  • Where did Malta get its name? The Greeks called it Melite, because of the abundant presence of bees. Indeed, the country is still a major producer of honey.
  • Is it warm in Malta? The climate is never too hot or too cold. In fact, it is a perfect destination for low-season travel, as the climate is pleasant even in late autumn!

Well, now you know a little bit more about the country, let’s get into what you should do while you’re there. We’re going to run through the main cities, and explore options for people of all interests, so strap in!

We begin our exploration of Malta at its capital, which is located on the largest of the country’s three islands—also known as Malta. Valletta is a lovely compact city, meaning that it’s pretty easy to make your way around on foot. On this fantastic Free Valleta Walking Tour , you can make your way around the city’s main attractions and gain an interesting insight into the country’s fascinating history along the way. Below are the must-see sights:

A steep uphill street surrounded by old yellow stone buildings and a church at the bottom with a large dome.

From the outside, St. John’s Co-Cathedral may not blow you away with its austere architecture. However, once you enter the hallowed walls of this cathedral, you’ll be blown away by its highly decorative design. You’ll enjoy wonderfully ornate gilded arches as well as two works by Caravaggio: The Beheading of St. John the Baptist and St. Jerome Writing . Find out why the troubled artist arrived on the island in 1606.

Currently the official residence of the President of the Republic of Malta, this building was erected in 1574 under Jean de Valette, Grand Master of the Order of Malta. It is located in the heart of Valleta, in St George’s Square. There is no better place to learn about the history of the ancient order, as well as to discover the life of the man who founded Malta’s capital. Inside, you’ll find the coats of arms of the Grand Masters, the Armoury Museum, and some richly decorated rooms.

Yellow stone coat of arms with a lion and a horse on either side, surmounting a row of windows inside a patio of an old palace in the centre of Malta.

The Barrakka Gardens is a must-stop on your visit to Valletta. They are divided into two distinct sections, the Upper Barrakka and the Lower Barrakka Gardens, both of which offer fantastic views of the harbour.

It was here that the Knights Hospitaller used to take refuge in meditation—today, they remain one of the finest points in the country to take refuge and relax. The main point of interest is the Saluting Battery , an ancient cannon battery that once a day thunders over the city with a blank shot. While this cannon is now merely ceremonial, it was once an essential defence from the Ottoman Empire.

This fantastic museum is located in the Auberge de Provence , a building that once housed the Knights of Malta. Today, it is home to artefacts which date back to the Neolithic period. Special emphasis is placed on the legendary civilisations that erected the temples at the archaeological site of Hagar Qim. The excavations themselves are another must-see in Malta—check them out for yourself on this excursion to the Hagar Qim Temples & Blue Grotto Tour .

The high gardens of Barrakka at sunset with a stone terrace and a row of cannons.

Fort Saint Elmo is an incredibly imposing and beautiful structure in the city. The mighty walls overlook much of the sea and played a crucial role during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565 attempted by the Ottoman Empire. In this battle, the Knights Hospitaller were put on the back foot, but, against all odds, held out long enough to drive back the enemy. Today the fort houses the National War Museum , a fantastic exhibition which covers 7,000 years of Maltese history going all the way back to the Bronze.

Not far from the Fortress is this charming private residence built 400 years ago by a member of the Knights Hospitaller. Today, you can grab a ticket to the Casa Rocca Piccola to learn about its history and gain an insight into how Maltese noble families lived. Also, some of the bedrooms in the residence have been restored, so the discerning traveller to Valletta can even stay in this palace!

Close-up of part of the outer walls of St. Elmo's Fort in Valletta.

Across from Valletta’s coastline, you’ll find three impressive fortified areas: Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua. These were once small fishing villages, nestled on narrow strips of land, until the Order fortified them. Today, you can explore their charming alleyways on foot and also enjoy stunning views from the sea on a boat tour around Valletta harbour. By booking the Three Cities of Malta tour , you get to experience both in one!

Sliema is the modern face of Malta, and one of the most popular to visit, lying just to the north-west of Valletta Bay. This city features a stunning promenade with picturesque views of the Mediterranean, a fantastic selection of shopping experiences, superb restaurants and much more.

Mdina and Rabat

The fortified city of Mdina was Malta’s first capital and is located a few kilometres inland, standing atop a hill. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features centuries of rich history, which have been immaculately maintained, allowing visitors to feel as though they’re stepping into the past! Meanwhile, right on its doorstep, you’ll find the stunning city of Rabat, another site of great historical and cultural value.

Aerial view of the small fortified medieval town of Mdina with domes and towers surrounded by green countryside.

St. Paul’s Cathedral

This magnificent Baroque cathedral built between 1697 and 1702 is located in the heart of Mdina. It is famous for its grandiose interior and inlaid marble floors. Directly opposite is the Cathedral Museum , which houses historical artefacts and sacred artwork.

Mdina, being built on a hill, provides fantastic views of both the Maltese countryside and Rabat and there is perhaps no better viewpoint than Bastion Square. This is a great spot to take photos and enjoy the scenery. This square is also a treasure trove of history, which is constantly bustling with tourists and locals alike.

It should also be mentioned that the mighty fortified walls and ornate gates were used during the filming of several scenes from the HBO series Game of Thrones . If you’re a big fan of the series, you’ll get even more out of this experience.

A stone bridge ending in a large ornate doorway, open inside the walls of Mdina.

St Paul’s Catacombs and St Agatha’s Crypt serve as evidence of Malta’s early Christian era. This intricate network of underground tunnels was used for hundreds of years after its construction. Nearby, you’ll find a spectacular Roman house, known as the Domvus Romana —still featuring very nicely preserved mosaics which are of the standard of those found at Pompeii, making the visit all the more worthwhile.

The Wignacourt Museum in Rabat is an important cultural and historical institution in Malta. It is named after the Grand Master of the Knights of Malta, Alof de Wignacourt, who was also a patron of Caravaggio. The importance of the museum is not so much linked to the beauty of its architecture, but rather to what is kept in its vaults: the Grotto of St Paul . It seems that it was here that the saint found refuge after a shipwreck, and from here he established the first Christian settlement in the West.

A cave dug underground with grooves and bunks, lit by electric light.

5 kilometres (3.1 miles) from Mdina and Rabat is the small village of Dingli. This area is renowned for the Dingli Cliffs, parts of which rise up to 250 metres (820 ft) high, making for incredible views of the Meditteranean. If you’re staying in Sliema, join us on this Mdina and Dingli Cliffs day trip to see them for yourself!

Also on the south coast of Malta, a little further south than Dingli is perhaps the most famous attraction: the Blue Grotto. Here, you’ll find a number of natural sea caves seemingly carved into a cliff reminiscent of Capri’s Blue Grotto, from which this landmark takes its name. There are several different ways of visiting this iconic site, including this day trip to the fishing village of Marsa Scirocco with a stop at the Blue Grotto . Don’t miss out!

View from above of an arch-shaped cliff over the turquoise sea and some ships entering a small opening in the rock.

Popeye Village is one of the most exciting attractions in Malta and one that is especially popular with kids. This was a purpose-built movie set for the iconic 1980’s Popeye film starring Robin Williams—since then, it has been converted into an exciting theme park. Explore the set, and enjoy the village’s game areas, which feature mini-golf, giant Jenga, water games and much more!

Gozo is the second largest island in the Maltese archipelago and also has plenty to see and enjoy. Here, you’ll find incredible natural attractions, as well as cultural activities to enjoy. In fact, the island enjoys a remarkable monumental heritage, as we’ll soon mention!

Most people make their way to the island via ferry from the north of Malta, but there are other ways of enjoying this island. If you’re short on time, consider this Gozo day trip from Sliema , which will bring you around Gozo’s most important sites and bring you back to the main island all in one day!

The highlight of Gozo’s capital is undoubtedly the fortified citadel that towers over the city. We suggest you climb to the top and admire the landscape from the top of the fortified walls. The city also treats visitors to the little jewels of Baroque art that are its churches. There are many in Gozo, but especially inside Victoria, which residents still call Rabat, its original name.

A highlight of any visit to Malta is a visit to the Ggantija Temples. Here, you’ll find the remains of one of the oldest religious complexes in the world— incredibly, even older than Stonehenge. The complex consists of two adjacent temples surrounded by round walls. What is impressive is the size of some of the stone blocks, which can weigh several tonnes. This is why the site has been called the ‘temple of the giants’ or ggantija in Maltese.

If you love the sea, you can’t skip the fishing village of Xlendi. On the southwest coast of Gozo, Xlendi Bay is just a 20-minute drive from the Gozo Ferry Terminal. Once reserved for women only, it has now become a popular holiday destination. Take a dip at any one of the crystal-clear beaches at the bay, explore the area’s natural caverns or enjoy watersports!

Another filming location of the Game of Thrones series, it was here that the wedding between Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen took place. In the scene, Fungus Rock can be seen in the background in Dwerja Bay. From Dwerja, you can enjoy spectacular views of the sea surrounding Gozo.

The Blue Lagoon

Our list of the top spots in Malta ends with the smallest of the three main islands of the Maltese archipelago. Despite Comino’s size, tourists flock to this island in search of what is probably the bluest and clearest water in Malta. The lagoon is ideal for swimming, snorkelling and diving, with the clear water providing the perfect view of the sea creatures which live beneath!

To discover the Blue Lagoon for yourself, book this Gozo & Comino Islands cruise which includes a stop at the Blue Lagoon, during which you can take some time to go for a swim and snorkel in this prime location.

There you have it, the top things to do and see in the beautiful country of Malta. Despite its size, there really is a lot more to see in this beautiful country.
