If you and your partner love visiting new places together, or if it seems like both of you have a never-ending case of wanderlust, then a travel-themed wedding makes total sense for you when it's time to start planning your big day. Luckily, there are plenty of travel theme wedding ideas you can use to incorporate your love of exploration and adventure into your wedding decor. Whether you're into backpacking, glamorous getaways, or something in between, these ideas will help jumpstart your travel-themed wedding vision board.

What is a travel-themed wedding?

The travel-themed wedding style tends to be a mixture of  boho and whimsical aesthetics , with the ultimate goal of creating an ambience that's both welcoming and eclectic—most importantly, it should be full of your personality and love of travel! Popular decor accents for a travel theme include things like globes, vintage suitcases, postcards, airplane motifs, stamps, and maps. Bright  wedding colors  are an easy way to give your travel-themed wedding a boost of fun, so we suggest choosing eye-catching colors like yellow, blue, red, fuchsia, and turquoise.

Passport wedding invitations

We love this alternative invitation idea if you're having a destination wedding. Work with your wedding stationer to create a themed stationery booklet that looks like a passport—you can include all of the important  wedding invitation details , along with helpful travel tips for your guests.

Comfortable wedding attire

Practical attire is especially important if your travel-themed wedding is taking place in an unexpected locale, like at the top of a mountain. Skip the fancy gowns, tuxedos, and footwear in favor of clothes that make it easy to move around (hiking boots optional!) and are appropriate for your venue.

Engraved compass wedding gift

Watches are a popular wedding day gift to give your spouse, but for a travel wedding theme, why not surprise your S.O. with a personalized compass instead? This one has a sweet engraved message on the back that reads, "So you can always find your way back home."

Airplane hangar wedding venue

Don't hesitate to think outside the box when it comes to your travel-themed wedding venue. Unique transportation-inspired venues, like airplane hangars, aviation museums, and train stations, will add an extra-memorable element to your special day.

If you prefer individual  wedding escort cards  instead of a seating chart, leather luggage tags are a creative idea for a travel-inspired wedding. Hire a professional calligrapher to write the guests' names—these also double as wedding favors!

Globe wedding guest book

Skip the traditional tabletop guest book and ask your guests to sign a globe instead. Not only does it match the travel-themed wedding aesthetic, but it's something you'll actually want to display it in your home after the wedding. Check out local thrift stores for vintage globes, or  purchase a customized one on Etsy .

Inspiration for Your Travel Themed Wedding or Destination Wedding

Last updated: June 14, 2024 - Written by Jessica Norah 106 Comments

Planning a travel themed wedding? The goal of this article is to provide inspiration for couples planning a travel inspired wedding or destination wedding.

I guess you could say that Laurence and I had a travel-themed wedding although it was more of a destination wedding. We legally married at sea aboard the RMS Queen Mary 2 in the Atlantic Ocean. Then we had a small ceremony in Venice Italy for family and friends to celebrate our wedding in Venice .

Even though we did not have the most traditional wedding ceremony or reception, I spent quite a bit of time online researching awesome travel themed wedding items and ideas about ways a couple could incorporate their wanderlust and love of travel into their wedding ceremony and wedding reception.

We’ve put together a list of over 100 items that we think would be perfect for a travel-themed wedding. These include travel themed wedding invitations, wedding rings, wedding decorations, table place cards, cake toppers, DIY ideas, wedding favor gifts, and more!

Many of our recommendations are focused on handmade items and unique products that can be customized to fit the style of any wedding couple. We include items that should fit just about any type of wedding and suit any wedding budget.

We have physically reviewed many of these items and hope you enjoy this list of wonderful travel themed wedding items. We hope it inspires you and gives you plenty of ideas for your own travel themed wedding!

100+ Ideas for a Travel Themed Wedding

In 2015, one survey of American wedding couples found that approximately 21% have a destination wedding of some sort, whether domestically or internationally. The study found that there are more than 350,000 destination weddings each year, 77% of which take place in the continental US and 23% at international destinations with the Caribbean and Mexico being the two most popular destinations.

However, not all couples want or can have a destination wedding, but many still want to incorporate their love of travel into their wedding celebration. You don’t have to have a destination wedding to fill your marriage celebration with travel inspired touches.

So we are sharing over 100 products we found during our search that we thought would be perfect for a travel themed wedding or a destination wedding. These simple travel themed wedding decorations can help transport your guests to another land, and make them feel like they’re on holiday, even if they are still in their hometown.

I got truly interested in the topic of how to incorporate elements of travel into one’s wedding after we decided to get customized engagement/wedding rings with a strong travel element.  Many of the items on this list we physically reviewed. Some were items we purchased or received as gifts, and others were given to us by artists for review. Other products are just ones I loved when researching travel themed weddings online.

The majority of the items included on our list are handmade or hand customized items, made by a single artist, family, or a small business. Many of these items are truly unique and the majority can be customized to include elements that are special to you.

Note that most wedding items are marketed towards heterosexual couples with bride/groom and his/her versions. However, given that most of our recommended items can be personalized, most artists are happy to adjust wording/colors/features to suit a gay wedding, civil union, nonbinary couple, etc. Just message them to ask!

We know that many people, like us, want to try to support local businesses when we can, and with Etsy it is easy to find products that are made in one’s own country. We share items that are made worldwide, with a large number of products produced in the USA, Canada, and the UK. But we also include items made by artists in Australia, the Ukraine, France, India, Brazil, Israel, etc.

When shopping, we recommend ordering items well before you need them for the wedding. Personalized and custom orders will take longer to make and international shipping times can be slow.

Although we chose these items specifically for a travel themed wedding, many of these items will also work for travel themed bridal showers, bon voyage parties, birthday parties, baby showers, engagement parties, wedding couple gifts, and just as general travel-related gifts.

There are so many possible ways to incorporate travel elements into your wedding, and we have tried to cover a variety of items from cake toppers to wedding invitations to wedding favors to wedding jewelry. We also tried to include items that fit a number of budgets and types of weddings.

We hope that this list helps inspire you to incorporate some element of your own wanderlust into your upcoming wedding or party!

Let’s get started!

Travel Themed Bow Ties & Neck Ties

Adding a travel themed bow tie or neck tie to your wedding wardrobe is an elegant but subtle way to incorporate your love of travel into your special day.

If you are purchasing a bow tie, be sure to note if it comes pre-tied or not, and whether it can be self-tied. Most grooms will prefer one style or the other.

For weddings, especially if there are a lot of groomsmen wearing matching bow ties, it is often recommended by wedding photographers to wear pre-tied bow ties for the photo shoot so that all the ties are a uniform size and shape in the wedding photos. So, some grooms may want one of each.

Travel Themed Guestbooks & Guestbook Alternatives

A guestbook is often one of the most treasured wedding keepsakes for a wedding couple as it contains the personal well wishes from all the wedding guests. A guestbook is often one of the first things that wedding guests see at your wedding, so it can be a good way to introduce the travel theme of the wedding.

Often the wedding couple has a guest book available to sign for people entering or exiting the wedding ceremony and then move it later to the reception so anyone who didn’t get a chance to sign at the ceremony can do it then.

If your guestbook is a bit unique, you may want to make sure you nominate a friend or family member to be in charge of letting guests know about your guest book. They can also show them how to use it if it requires any explanation.

When choosing a guestbook option, don’t forget to consider how many people are on your wedding guest list, to ensure that all guests have enough space to sign it. Many of the options below have different sizes available, while others come with the option to add extra pages for larger wedding parties.

Also note that most of our recommended guest books can also be used as a photo album if you prefer to use it to display photos of you and your partner, or if you wish for guests to take photos at the reception with an instant camera and add them to the book. Just be sure to check with the seller before purchasing if it is not clear.

Travel Themed Wedding Card Boxes

Your wedding guests may wish to give you a wedding card with their well-wishes on your special day, but with the hustle and bustle of the day, it can be hard to try to gather these throughout the day. So many wedding couples have a special place with a wedding card box where guests can drop it off.

Wedding couples often place these at the wedding reception with a sign so guests know they can drop off their cards and any gifts in a dedicated space. It may make sense to place it beside your guest book.

These travel themed wedding card boxes can also make a beautiful keepsake long after the wedding day.

Travel Themed Table Numbers & Place Card Holders

Depending on how you are organizing your wedding, you may be having your guests sit at specified tables and perhaps in specified seats. If so, you may need table numbers to designate each table and/or place card holders to designate the seat for each guest.

It is easy to add a travel themed touch to your table numbers and place card holders. For instance, instead of using traditional table numbers, you can designate tables using city names, country names, or photos of your favorite attractions.

Also, for those serving sit down dinners, if you are planning to have printed menus at the tables, you may want to think about doing one that matches the table place cards.

Travel Themed Wedding Candles

Wedding candles are a way of symbolizing the uniting of two families. Often the bride and groom will light separate candles with their families, and bring them together to light a new candle as they start their next big adventure together. They are also often used to light churches and reception halls and as table centerpieces and decorations.

It is easy to add a sense of wanderlust to your candle choices, whether it is through the way the candle looks, its holder, or its scent. For scented candles, you may want to choose a specific scent for candles on the tables that fits a specific destination for a themed wedding.

If planning to burn them, look for non-toxic natural wax (paraffin free) candles. Just note that not all guests love scented candles as some people are very sensitive or allergic to them. So if you have them at the guest tables, you may want to have someone ask guests at each table before lighting and have some LED backups.

My dream is to have a ceremony on the beach at sunset. Is this a good idea? It’s important to give myself a few days to relax prior to the wedding.

October 3, 2017 at 2:03 pm

Hi Stacey, I think that it is your dream, then you should do it as long as your spouse-to-be is also on board with the idea. It can be tricky to have an outdoor wedding but I would just have it somewhere where the weather is normally warm and predictable and have a plan if the weather is less than ideal (an alternative indoor venue). If you are working with a wedding planner, they should be able to help get everything worked out for you. Giving yourself a few days to relax in advance sounds like a great plan! Wishing you a wonderful beach wedding, Jessica

Hi Lissa, Yes, when we got married on the Queen Mary 2 ( https://independenttravelcats.com/2015/12/22/wedding-at-sea-married-cunard-queen-mary-2-wedding/ ), we did very little planning as your options are obviously more limited and you have a wedding coordinator who helps you out and does the work of setting things up. We just had to come up with readings and music and make some selections regarding vows, flowers, food, etc. Very easy which was perfect for us! ~ Jesica

Lots of nice products (and lots of research to put it all together!). I myself organized a travel themed barmitzva for my son a couple of years ago – lots of work went into travel video making (about all countries he visited) and decorations (every table was themed with a different country) but it was a lot of fun and quite unusual for a barmitsva! Needless to say- our wedding happened while travelling too (in Eastern Europe some 20+yrs ago).. while not too many people got to witness it, I would not do it any other way. It makes the day so special!

May 29, 2016 at 8:00 am

Hi Victoria, Haha, yes, it was a lot of research but so fun to find out about so many interesting products and such talented independent artists and small businesses! Sounds like a very special barmitzva for your son! My friend did something similar with her wedding although it was more wildlife themed (her and her husband worked at a nature preserve) and each table represented animals from different parts of the world. A fun way to decorate and make each table unique. Best, Jessica

This post is so full of inspiration for wanderlust-full celebrations. I love the passport and boarding pass save-the-dates and invitations.

May 22, 2016 at 10:57 am

Hi Erin, Yes, I think since most people now send Save the Dates as well as invites, it is nice to establish a theme if one is going to have one before the actual wedding day. But I think these invites are great even alone without having a travel themed wedding or destination wedding. The passports can provide a lot more information than a normal paper invite, including all the travel, pre-ceremony, venue, ceremony, and registry details as you can add as many pages as you need. ~ Jessica

This is a super timely article as I’m actually getting married next year! I love the map flowers bouquet idea because I’m not really fond of fresh cut flowers (found a bug in a bouquet once, ugh) and I think it’s a bit of a waste when they die so quickly after. Thanks for the inspiration!

May 21, 2016 at 5:19 am

Congrats on your upcoming wedding. Yes that map flowers bouquet is a great idea and I think paper flowers are becoming more popular for the reasons you are said, cleaner and can keep forever, but also because one can buy them ahead, travel with them, and store them just about anywhere. I also love the fact that you can customize these so much. Glad you found this post inspirational for your wedding! ~ Jessica

Your post made me so jealous! I got married almost 4o years ago, when there was no such thing as a ‘themed wedding.” In my country of origin people were married in a very traditional way, so this is how I got married to, but I would have loved to have a wedding like yours. Recently I attended a themed wedding for my niece though, in Florence. It was very beautiful, but nothing like yours. You’ve exceeded everything I’ve ever seen or heard so far. Wow!

May 21, 2016 at 4:48 am

Hi Anda, Yes, I think weddings, particularly for Americans, have become much more for the couple and what they would like to do and less about the family. I think it has to do partly with the fact that wedding couples are much more likely to pay for at least part, if not all, of their own wedding rather than the bride’s parents paying for most of it (many can’t afford to do this). Our wedding on the boat was private and fairly simple, and our wedding in Venice looks fabulous in photos, which it was of course, but it was also very small and informal. It was great for us as it was pretty stress-free! ~ Jessica

Jessica, we got our travel inspiration from our honeymoon, but if I could turn back time and have a travel inspired wedding I would chose some of these items. I love the bow tie, cufflinks, bouquet, cake topper and invitations, but adored your luggage. I first noticed your luggage in your wonderful Orient Express post. The rings are also a great idea for replacing expensive, sentimental rings when travelling which is something that is a need for many., but something I have never thought of doing. Finally I love that final photo of your dress and luggage on the bed in your beautiful Venetian hotel. Great post and thank you for linking up with #TheWeeklyPostcard

May 20, 2016 at 5:49 pm

Hi Lyn, Yes, I know, these make me want to get married again and I just got married! You have a good eye, yes, this is the same luggage we took on both the Queen Mary 2 and Orient Express. After the wedding the cosmetic case (because our wedding party didn’t have room to take it back) ended up traveling with us through Italy, Morocco, and Egypt…probably not the best choice of luggage for desert travel but it survived. Laurence is thinking about wearing his map bow tie and cufflinks when he gives a speech at an upcoming travel conference which I think will be perfect:) We love our rings, and if you are looking for unique travel rings, I can highly recommend Bruce. We got fabulous service, communication, and products from him! He has some amazing ready-to-buy designs and I love you can also customize. ~ Jessica

May 20, 2016 at 5:39 pm

Yes, if you son (and his bride-to-be) loves to travel, it can be a great theme. But even if not a theme per se, it can be great to include some travel elements:) ~ Jessica

So many great ideas here, Jessica! I am getting closer to this stage with my daughters (not quite yet!), but I know one of them has talked about a destination wedding. I actually bought the cuff links for my husband with our hometown on them, just for fun. The cake toppers are really cute – that would be so special. There are so many creative alternatives to the “standard issue” things I did back in the day. Helps you get excited for something very special:)

May 17, 2016 at 6:43 am

Hi Seana, That is very cool about the cufflinks. Yes, it is amazing how much customization is available to wedding couples these days and it doesn’t have to be super expensive! Sounds like you may be busy with wedding planning in the near future:) Best, Jessica

Wow, such a fantastic post! I am already long married but I love so many of the travel themed wedding ideas, especially the map bow ties, the passport invites, that beautiful orange luggage set, and the globe with the pearls. Also I had never thought of paper flowers, great idea to have after the wedding as a beautiful keepsake of the Big Day! I also love the map pin board and I am contemplating getting one for my niece and nephew. Saving this post for when I have relatives get married!

May 15, 2016 at 6:01 pm

Thanks Diane for taking the time to leave a comment! Yes, so many wonderful travel themed wedding items and it is amazing how many great and unique products and talented artists there are on Etsy. Yes, and as you noted many of these items like the luggage and map pin board are not wedding specificmand make great gifts for anyone who loves travel. Thanks for bookmarking our post! Best, Jessica

Beach Wedding Invite FAQ

If you’re hosting a destination wedding, courtesy dictates you should really be sending out your invitations about three months before your date. Sending save-the-date cards up to a year in advance as well is even better. (Want to see some really unique save the date cards? Of course you do! Check  these  out.)  Be sure to request that your guests RSVP at least a month in advance. Not only will this keep everything running as smoothly as possible, but it will help you avoid any potential travel or accommodation cancellation fees.  If your beach wedding happens to be in your own backyard and most of your guests won’t need to travel, you may have a little flexibility with this rule. Don’t forget, you’ll still need plenty of advance notice for your caterers and any other events where you’ll need a headcount. In any case, use your judgment. You know your guests and their unique circumstances best. Just make sure everyone has ample time to clear their calendar and make travel arrangements.

Your beach wedding invitations should include all of the same information a regular invite would. Things like the date, time, location information for the ceremony and reception (address, city, country, etc.), RSVP information, and wedding website info.    In addition, include helpful instructions for booking their trip and information about the resort/hotel where you’ve reserved rooms.  If you’re hosting a destination wedding, we strongly recommend that you create a wedding website in addition to sending out paper communications. This way, you can coordinate all of your pre-wedding events (like rehearsal dinners, etc.) and coordinate closely with your guests in one easy place.  (P.S. – Minted makes this easy with free wedding websites that match your invitations and act as the hub for your guests to find all of your wedding deets!)

This is a ubiquitous question, probably because hosting a destination is often about navigating the unpredictable, and predicting the numbers in attendance would be really helpful.  As you can guess, there’s really no way to predict with certainty. Still, the people who crunch numbers on these things say around 70-85 percent will attend, while 30-25 percent will send their regrets (on average).  Want to get a better idea and/or boost your affirmative RSVPs? Send out your save the dates as early as possible with your wedding website info. Your website should include all of the information your guests need to make the journey as easy as possible, including ways to communicate with you about travel, lodgings, etc. Even better: hire a travel agent to handle that part for everyone if it’s within your budget.   Word to the wise:  Don’t pad up your guest list because you assume some won’t come. Ever hear of Murphy’s Law? That’s the perfect scenario to test it.  Be sure to check out our post on Wedding  Invitation Etiquette Questions  for more details on wedding invitation wording, timing, and more.

Your Destination Wedding Awaits

With a bit of planning, a lot of emails, and the perfect beach wedding invitations (sent promptly, of course), you can pull off your destination wedding with as little stress as possible. Not to mention it’ll give your loved ones plenty of time for swimsuit shopping!

Don’t forget your packaging!

You can easily make your own envelopes at home using old maps you have lying around, which definitely scream “travel themed wedding” like nothing else!

Check out this tutorial to see how it’s done.

Alternatively, if you’d rather just give a nod to maps in your packaging then use a normal envelope and create your own map envelope inserts. Here’s a tutorial you can follow.

“where in the world are you sitting” seating plan.

For our own wedding, we made this simple “Where in the world are you sitting” seating plan, which featured polaroid photos of us taken in each destination we’d included.

DIY Travel Themed Wedding Ideas - Where in the world are you sitting seating plan

It was simple to make and used a canvas, polaroid photos paperclipped to vintage postcards and text we’d printed out from the computer onto cardstock.

Something like this would also work if you wrapped a canvas in map wrapping paper or glued a world map onto it. You could also use luggage tags instead of postcards.

RELATED: Travel Photo Display Ideas – 13 Creative Things To Do With Travel Photos

Destination Table “Numbers”

To go with your seating plan, you’ll also need destination table “numbers”.

We wanted ours to be simple so that everyone could read them easily and so our flowers would still stand out, so we printed out some simple text onto cardstock and laminated the card.

And then they were popped into heart photo holders . Easy!

DIY Travel Themed Wedding Ideas - Destination Table Numbers

Polaroid Photo Table “Numbers”

Alternatively, we’ve also seen other couples making polaroid photo table numbers, which look great and are also simple to do.

You can either glue your polaroids onto cardstock and add some text, or you could even make the polaroids themselves say what the destination is like these cute ones we’ve seen on Pinterest .

Souvenir Table Decorations

Another idea we had for our DIY travel themed wedding was to add souvenirs from our travels onto each of the tables.

Small mementos from your trip like ornaments work best for this but keyrings, photos, magnets and other tidbits from your trip also add interest.

Icelandic Lava Rock Souvenir

World Map Table Confetti

Another way to bring the travel theme to your wedding is with map table confetti – and it’s as easy as cutting out small hearts from old maps and road atlases!

We don’t recommend using this as your throwing confetti as it’s not biodegradable, but as a cute table decoration, it works and is great for those of you who are on a budget.

World Map Table Confetti

Confetti Cones

But if you do want to incorporate maps into your throwing confetti, then the best way to do it is to make confetti cones out of old maps (with the confetti inside being your usual biodegradable or rose petal confetti).

The great thing about this DIY travel themed wedding idea is that each guest will see the maps up close and will surely comment on the uniqueness of the idea!

Check out this tutorial to see how it’s done >>

“Send us a postcard!” Guest Book

Instead of a traditional guest book, ask your guests to write on the back of vintage postcards and post them through a postbox. Here’s a stunning handmade one on Etsy.

DIY Travel Themed Wedding - Vintage Postcards

This idea also works with vintage suitcases and pretty keepsake boxes but you won’t be able to lock them up.

DIY Travel Themed Wedding - Vintage Suitcase Card Box

Not only is this a lovely way to incorporate the travel theme into your wedding, but once you read the postcards after your wedding, you may even be inspired (like us!) to create some artwork.

We plan on displaying our postcards in a simple frame with some messages showing and others with the pictures showing.

Pretty Globe Guest Book

Another alternative guest book idea is to ask your guests to write a message on a globe, which can be displayed in your home afterwards as a lovely reminder of your day.

There are also various sellers on Etsy who will personalise a globe for you too!

“Add to our bucket list!” Guest Book

Although it’s always nice to read the usual well wishes and sentiments from your guests, you could also ask them to add to your bucket list.

Simply ask your guests to suggest a destination or activity you should do together once you’re married.

Their bucket list suggestions can be written on postcards, on bucket list wedding cards or even on a world map or atlas!

Travel Themed Wedding - Bucket List Guest Book

Map Bunting & Garlands

Map bunting and garlands are also quick and easy to make and can be used to decorate your gift table, top table, DJ booth, wedding car and even your licensed gazebo if you’re getting married outside.

Check out this tutorial to see how to make them >>

Paper Map Flowers

When we got married, we decided to go for fake flowers. Not only were they cheaper and easier to store, but they will last forever.

We’ve even pulled my bouquet apart and put the flowers and foliage in vases around the house as a daily reminder of our special day.

And if you love maps, then you could even make your own flowers out of them!

We’ve posted a tutorial on our sister site ( House of Mahalo ) so you can see how it’s done. Paper roses are easier to make than you think – especially if you use this simple swirl technique!

Easy DIY Paper Flowers

Easy Map Wall Art

Hopefully you’re not sick of maps yet – we’ve still got a few more ideas on how to use them in your travel themed wedding!

You can make some simple DIY map wall art by covering a canvas with some vintage map wrapping paper and add a bit of extra pizzazz with fairy lights, led lighting strips or pretty text.

You could even cover heart-shaped canvases and hang them next to each other as a unique feature wall.

Map Cupcake Toppers

If you’ve gone for cupcakes rather than a traditional wedding cake then another way to use maps in your wedding is to make cupcake toppers out of them.

This really can be as simple as gluing two heart shapes either side of a toothpick – and you can even gussy up the maps with trimmings or pretty text if you want something extra special.

Honeymoon Countdown Digital Display

So this one is for the more technically minded among you but we wanted to include it in case it inspires you and your own DIY travel themed wedding ideas.

Digital Honeymoon Countdown Display

For our wedding, Scott created this cool digital display, which showed our guests a cute gif, our order of the day and (most importantly of all!) how many days we had left until our honeymoon. I’ve never seen anything like it before and we love how well received it was on the day!

Scott hasn’t written a complete tutorial for our home, crafts and lifestyle blog yet, so for now, check out this tutorial for how to make your own designs.

Travel Memories Photo Books

Another decoration for your gift or guest book table are photo books full of your most treasured travel memories!

Your guests will have a lot of fun flicking through these in between wedding activities and they’re easy to make as you only need to pick your photos and use a website like Snapfish or Photobox to create the book.

If you and your other half have been together for many years, then why not make multiple photo books each dedicated to a different year of travels?

The best bit? You can keep them for yourselves afterwards as a way of looking back on your memories. Hooray for repurposing!

DIY Travel Themed Wedding Favours

Clever globetrotter coasters.

Another unique way that we included the travel theme within our wedding was with these clever globetrotter coasters designed by Scott, which we then packaged up ourselves in small boxes tied with ribbons:

Wedding Favours

They played our wedding song at the click of a button and even entertained our guests with a fun puzzle they had to work out.

To save on printing costs, these boxed coasters were also our place name settings!

If you’re interested in these coasters for your own wedding, then just send us a message to commission Scott to make some for you.

Cute Luggage Tag Favours

For an easy travel themed favour, why not have some luggage tags personalised to give out to guests?

We’ve seen some great ones on Etsy by LetterandLeather – and check out these ones too .

DIY Travel Themed Wedding Thank Yous & Bridal Party Gifts

Polaroid thank you notes.

Because our gift list was a honeymoon fund rather than a traditional “pots and pans” list, we chose to send our guests polaroid photos as thank you notes.

Whether we were chilling with monkeys in Bali, enjoying a romantic candlelit dinner or breakfast in bed, each guest received a photo of us enjoying their gift.

Travel Cross Stitch Pictures

Cross stitch is my all-time favourite craft because the designs don’t have to be complicated to look good and come from the heart.

And they make great DIY travel gifts for your bridal party!

Remember that the travel theme is broad, so lots of motifs will work like planes, globes, cars, sailboats… you could even stitch wild animals to represent some of your favourite places like monkeys in Bali or lions in South Africa.

If you go for small cross stitch designs, you could turn them into keyrings or coasters. Or you can frame larger pictures to go on the wall or on someone’s desk at work.

Here are some travel-inspired cross stitch patterns from Etsy that we really love:

  • London and Paris Modern Cross Stitch City Patterns by SatsumaStreet
  • Paris Cross Stitch City Pattern by Xrestyk
  • Wanderlust Collage Cross Stitch Pattern by Stitchonomy
  • Adventure Awaits Modern Cross Stitch Pattern by fiddlesticksau
  • Happy Camper Cross Stitch Pattern by MODERNCrossStitchArt

Don’t Forget Your Honeymoon!

Any travel lover knows that the best part of a wedding is the honeymoon!

Scott and I knew from the start that our wedding would be small and simple yet full of love, laughter and smiles, while the majority of our budget was going to be for the most epic honeymoon.

In the end, we chose to spend three weeks gallivanting around Asia to see Singapore , Bali , Gili Meno and Dubai – and it really was epic!

And here’s how you can easily include your honeymoon within your wedding to make it even more special…

Honeymoon Fund

Instead of a traditional wedding gift list, ask your friends and family to contribute to a honeymoon fund using a website like Buy Our Honeymoon .

It’s really easy to set up your honeymoon list and the experiences you get from it will be worth so much more to you than any old wedding gift from a shop.

Scott and Justine's Buy Our Honeymoon Gift List

Once your list is created, you just need to send the link to it to your friends and family so they can choose something from your list or even suggest a honeymoon activity you may not have thought about.

Would YOU like to try it for your own honeymoon?

Grab 20% off now to create your own epic honeymoon gift list with our exclusive Buy Our Honeymoon discount code: WANDERERS

We also included the poem below in our wedding invites, which helped to make it clear what we were trying to do and why:

We’ve lived together quite a while with all our pots and pans, and as we don’t need homely gifts, we’ve got another plan! We know it’s not traditional but an awful lot more fun, to have some items on our wedding list to help us catch some sun! So if you’d like to give a gift and send us on our way, a donation to our honeymoon would really make our day! Then while we’re relaxing on the beach, or by the pool so blue, we’ll sit back and know that it’s truly thanks to you!

20 Printable Travel Theme Wedding Invitations

travel themed wedding invitations etsy

*UPDATED FOR 2020* One of the benefits of choosing a theme for your wedding like travel i s that it can really help out the budget because you don’t have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to things like stationery. And as much as I always love the idea of custom stationery, I know that’s not in the budget for many couples, which is where printable invites can be a great saver. You buy the design and have it customised with your names and details, and then have it printed either through an online print on demand service like PSPrint , or at your local printshop. The best part is that you don’t have to compromise on the design itself, because there are so many great options in places like Etsy . Today I’ve rounded up 20 fab travel and destination invitations, save the dates, and stationery suites with a travel theme – some absolute gems here for wanderlust-worthy weddings!

If you're getting married on Halloween or planning a spooktacular wedding , you'll need the perfect Halloween wedding outfit for your spooky and sweet nuptials. However, finding the right Halloween wedding dress can be challenging. You want to celebrate the creepiness of the holiday (without looking like you're in costume ) and remain elegant because it is your wedding day after all.

To help you nail the scary-meets-chic aesthetic , we've enlisted the help of Personal Bridal Stylist, Alysia Cole . She advises to ditch the traditional white gown and embrace the darkness with a black and/or gothic Halloween bridal dress. "Luckily a lot of current bridal trends fit a Halloween theme," she says. Keep reading for more style tips and a detailed shopping guide with 25 of the best Halloween themed wedding dresses that capture the dark and moody essence of the holiday.

The Best Halloween Wedding Dresses for 2024

Below, we've listed our favorite unconventional Halloween wedding gowns in different colors and levels of formality for every type of personal style.

I Planned My Wedding From 3,000 Miles Away for $3,000 — Here's How

Yes, it's possible to have the perfect day for less.

travel themed wedding invitations etsy

Stacey Leasca/Travel + Leisure

It had been 10 years and counting to the day my now husband decided to propose. After a quiet night at home, following takeout from our favorite burger joint in Venice, California, he tiptoed into the other room with our dog, Alastor, and pretended Alastor found something under the bed. I ran in, positive it was a mouse, only to find the two of them down on one knee (well, one holding up a paw). Naturally, I said yes. Less than a month later, we'd be moving halfway around the world to Portugal . So, I did what anyone would do. I planned a wedding in three weeks on the other side of the country so our families could be there. All for about $3,000.

To be fair, I knew my guest list would be tiny, which right off the bat is the ultimate game-changer when it comes to planning a wedding both quickly and financially efficiently. It was just both sets of parents, a sibling each, their partners, my niece and nephew, my grandmother, my childhood best friend as the officiant, and her partner, giving us a grand total of 15 people. And that's something even professional wedding planners say will undoubtedly save you the most money.

"It's absolutely true that having a smaller guest list can reduce your costs — it's simple math," Jessica Bishop, the founder of The Budget Savvy Bride , said. "Additional guests mean additional meals, seats, invitations, and more. For every six to 10 extra guests, you'll be looking at more reception tables, linens, and centerpieces. Having a smaller guest list allows you to treat an intimate group to a nicer experience than you would if you had to stretch your budget to accommodate a larger crew."

Keep scrolling to see where else I, and a bunch of experts, think you can save and splurge like a pro when planning a long-distance wedding.

Save: Location

At first, we planned to have a simple ceremony at the Providence, Rhode Island Courthouse, which even for a group of 60 people would have only cost between $150 and $1,000, depending on the day. However, this was during the pandemic; thus, the court would give us a marriage license but wouldn't host our day. Instead, I reached out to, in my humble opinion, one of the most beautiful libraries in America: The Providence Public Library . We were given access to its gorgeous entrance area, complete with ballroom chairs, prep suite, and a few fun extras the librarians surprised us with for $1,250 total, far less than the $12,800 average venue cost reported by the Knot's Real Wedding's Study . (And, as a bonus, we got to sign our wedding certificate in the records room of the first newspaper I ever worked for.)

However, if you do want to go for a more expansive venue, Colleen Carswell, the creator of DIY Wedding Planning Made Easy , says the best way to save is to forgo doing it all yourself and go for a fully stocked venue instead. "Look for venues that provide all the rentals — tables, chairs, linens — and the staff to set up as well as plenty of pre-wedding time for setup," Carswell said. "I once worked at a venue that served corporate and wedding clients and only allowed a two-hour turnover between events — that tight and rushed timeline is going to end up costing a lot."

Total cost: $1,250

Save: Flowers

I knew I wanted a special bridal bouquet but also knew I didn't want to shell out the average $2,300 for flowers. So, I followed Pinterest's advice and checked out Etsy for a dried flower bouquet instead. I got one for $100 from Lunaria Flower Shop and even threw in my husband's boutonniere for a whopping $17.51. It also made for a fantastic souvenir, as we still have the dried flowers sitting in a vase in our dining room three years later, looking as fresh as the day we bought them.

Total cost: $117.51

For dining, getting something catered for that small number of people didn't make sense. So, we made reservations at one of the city's top spots, North , which whipped up a small tasting menu for us when we told them it was for our wedding meal for $70 per person, bringing the total to $840. (My grandmother and the kids skipped dinner, so for this one, there were only 12 of us). As a bonus, this allowed people to also order off the regular menu if they wanted something different and allowed us all to enjoy a truly delicious meal.

"While it's important to be mindful of your budget, there are certain areas where it's worth investing," Lee Ramsay, owner of Lee Ramsay Events , a full-service wedding- and event-planning firm, said. "Good food and beverage is crucial, as your guests will remember the quality of their meals."

Total cost: $840

Save: Hair and Makeup

Hair and makeup is one wedding area that I know I am particularly lucky in. For years I have hosted videos for websites like Travel + Leisure , honing my makeup skills to a degree that I feel rather confident in — enough to do my own for my wedding. However, if you're hoping to do the same, let me share my biggest life tip: The employees of Sephora , specifically their beauty advisors. No, you shouldn't go in to ask to have your wedding makeup done for free. However, what you can do is go in (or even chat with one online) and consult with one of their experts on the right colors and products for you, and even soak in a bit of their expert guidance. That's exactly what I did to learn I had been wearing the wrong concealer my entire life, and finally learned how to contour the right way (spoiler alert: If you have dry skin, use only liquid products, not powders. Learn from my mistakes).

Total cost: $0

Stacey Leasca/Travel + Leisure

Mix: Dress and Suit

For me, looking at endless options or having something custom-made simply was not an option due to time constraints. But, again, I got lucky and fell in love with the Catherine Deane Frida Dress upon first click. Ordering off the rack allowed me to save a bundle and avoid expensive alteration fees. (I call this a mixed-budget item because, come on, $795 is still a lot of money.) But if you've got a little time to spare, there are a ton of other ways to save, like borrowing a dress from a beloved family member or friend or checking second-hand sites like Preowned Wedding Dresses . For my husband's suit, we were also fortunate and plucked a never-worn black suit from his closet, which he's now worn for countless weddings since, making it a real win-win.

Total cost: $795.00

Splurge: Photographer

When I shared the news of my impending wedding with family members and friends, everyone was overjoyed. But I had one confidant who also had a small ceremony that warned me do not, under any circumstances, forgo hiring a great photographer. And she wasn't the only one who believes this to be sage advice.

"Never skimp on a great photographer. These are the pictures you'll look back on with your family and friends. There's also a very good chance they'll end up on the wall of your new family home," Jason Wright, owner of Paradise Weddings , said.

We hired Yaritza Colon for our big day after falling in love with her style and editing choices. Colon was by far the most expensive part of our day and was the best $1,400 I have ever spent. Not only did I love her work, but it ended up being the last photo I took with my grandmother before she passed less than a year later, and it's a photo I will treasure forever.

"At the end of the day, wedding photos are tangible reminders of the absolutely priceless memories created on the big day," Bishop added. "Hiring a professional you trust and feel comfortable with and who has great reviews and a great portfolio is always a worthy investment."

The best part was, Colon also brought along her instant camera, allowing us to revel in the moment in real time. And while Colon has other paid add-ons, several experts shared that you can save by asking for minimalist packages that focus on only the things you really want to capture — the ceremony, reception, getting ready, or portraits. It's up to you.

Total cost: $1,400

Save: Officiant

The last great place to save is by asking a friend or family member to step in as an officiant, rather than hiring a pro.

“I’ve heard countless couples say that they wish they had a friend or family member officiate instead of spending $1,000 on a professional officiant," Steven Greitzer, a wedding expert and experienced officiant himself, shared. He even helps said officiants get what they need on his website, provenance.co . "The couple’s loved one can easily and affordably assemble everything they need through Provenance’s Ceremony Builder to lead a polished, personalized ceremony."

For me, there was no better choice than my childhood best friend, Zoe, who took on the task like a professional and had us all crying and laughing throughout the entire day. And I'm glad I have her to learn from, as I'm taking on the officiant duties for the first time for another beloved friend next. Hopefully, I'm well worth the savings too.
