During this time, the city is buzzing with energy while over 45,000 people from across the world come together to participate in the world’s largest walking achievement event.

If you participate in the march, you’ll get the chance to explore Nijmegen in a unique way, and trek next to the elegant Waal river with its beautiful, wooded surroundings.

20. Discover African cultural treasures at the Afrika Museum in Nijmegen

You can take a stroll along the boardwalk for a breath of fresh air, grab a spot on one of the street’s lawns, or treat yourself to an ice-cold biertje at a terrasje with a view of a busy quay on the Waal River.

Walk of the Town

Een route die leeft en leidt. De Walk of the Town neemt je mee op reis naar de meest bijzondere plekken van Nijmegen. De 7 kilometer lange route voert je langs gebouwen, geschiedenis, horeca en cultuur.

Onderweg vind je informatie, kunstwerken en verhalen. Stap in en uit wanneer je wilt, laat je verrassen en ga Nijmegen ontdekken!

De Walk of the Town is voor jongeren en zij die jong van geest zijn. Voor hen die geen standaard stadswandeling willen. Een app of gids is niet nodig; je kunt gewoon beginnen de lijn te volgen. Bezoek kleine en grote culturele centra, shop bij de leukste winkels en strijk neer bij fijne restaurants en cafés. De Walk of the Town is voor hen die Nijmegen nog niet kennen en voor hen die Nijmegen op een andere manier willen leren kennen.

De Walk of the Town is 7 kilometer lang. Er is geen officieel begin- en eindpunt aan de route, je kunt gewoon gaan lopen wanneer je de pijltjes ziet. Je kunt het in één dag doen of er de hele week over doen, dat is aan jou! 

Wil je alles volgen dan start je bij de  Citystore  op de Grote Markt. Je kunt hier een richting kiezen.

• De benedenlus (3 km): langs de Waal en door de straatjes van de benedenstad.
• De bovenlus (4 km): door de binnenstad en het Kronenburgerpark.

Bij beide lussen is een boekje met levendige verhalen, je vindt het in de Citystore.

Voor ouderen en mensen met een fysieke beperking

The Walk of the Town kent een aantal trappen en hellende wegen, toch is deze ook te volgen voor mensen met een fysieke beperking. De route die toegankelijker is voor deze doelgroep is in de plattegrond ingetekend met een stippellijn. Hierbij is een voorkeursrichting aangegeven, dit is met de klok mee, zodat je hellende wegen zoveel mogelijk naar beneden kunt volgen en een lift je omhoog brengt. Hier staan de alternatieven genoemd uitgaande van een start op de Grote Markt, looprichting met de klok mee.

• Je kunt vanaf de Grote Markt onder de Stevenspoort door en een ronde maken om de Sint Stevenskerk (2). Je komt door dezelfde poort weer eruit.
• Om de steile Stikke Hezelstraat te vermijden ga je rechtdoor de Augustijnenstraat in. Op de kruising met de Houtstraat vind je de route terug. Volg deze linksaf.
• Na de Poëzieplaats Gruitberg (4) ga je bij de trappen rechts de Nieuwstraat in dan links naar de Marikenstraat, op de kop bij het bankje gebruik je de lift tegenover het Arsenaal (5). Deze brengt je op het Mariënburgplein.
• Omzeil de traptreden van de onderdoorgang van filmhuis LUX (7), door vanaf het Mariënburgplein gezien links langs het gebouw te gaan.
• Deze route snijdt een stuk van de Benedenstad af, omdat de straten hier veelal hellend zijn of voorzien van hobbelige kinderkopjes. Wie dat wil vermijden volgt de Grotestraat tot aan de Waalkade. Daar sluit deze weer aan op de route, ga rechtsaf.
• De lift onderaan de Veerpoorttrappen (17), achter het casino, brengt je omhoog, van de Waalkade naar de bovenzijde van het casino. Ga niet meteen het park in, maar volg de stoep rechtdoor, langs de Lindenberg (21), naar het plein met de historische waterpomp, bij Kelfkensbos.
• Als je het park in wilt, kun je een rondje maken en weer aansluiten op de route. Het park is het makkelijkst toegankelijk via de voetgangersbrug (22) vanaf Kelfkensbos, het plein voor het Valkhof Museum (dit museum is nu tijdelijk gesloten) (23).

The city of Nijmegen is located in the eastern Netherlands, a few kilometres from the western German border. It is the largest city in the Gelderland province but also ranks as the 10th largest city in the entire country with a population in excess of 170,000 people.

There is no shortage of things to do in Nijmegen, with many historical buildings and squares, as well as ruins dating back to the Roman times. Nijmegen is also steeped in history that can be discovered at one of the many museums within the city. The architecture is incredible, with a mix of modern and olden styles that come together seamlessly in the city.

Nijmegen is both old and young at heart. It is the oldest city in the Netherlands and in 2005 it celebrated 2000 years. On the other hand, there is also a certain buzz within the city as Nijmegen is home to the Radboud University and its many students.

With a large choice of restaurants, cafes and bars in Nijmegen, things to do are easy to come by. I have put together a list of the top things to do in Nijmegen so that all you need to do is arrive in the city ready to explore. Nijmegen is easily accessible both by public transport and by car from the major cities in the Netherlands, which makes it the perfect destination for a day trip. The city is also well connected to the two major airport in the Netherlands: Schiphol an Eindhoven. Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen is one of the most important archeological museums in the Netherlands. Its rich collection follows the 5000 years of history of the area. Nijmegen (or Noviomagus in Latin) is the oldest Roman settlement in the Netherlands , which makes it the oldest Dutch city. Besides the collection of archeological artifacts, the museum also exhibits classical and modern art.

It is important to note that the museum will be closing for a period of time from the 1st of October 2022 for renovations. It will be housed temporarily at the former ABN AMRO building, after which it will reopen at the original venue at Kelfkenbos.

De Bastei is the result of two museums in Nijmegen merging to become one, namely the Natuurmuseum and De Stratemakerstoren . De Stratemakerstoren is a 16th century tower and is one of the highlights of the museum.

There is a large variety of different items on display (in excess of 100, 000) made up of archaeological pieces, taxidermy animals, rocks, minerals and insects. There is also a permanent display in the basement of the museum called Oergrond , which explains how the prehistoric soils came into being.

The River Treasury is another permanent exhibition which details the riparian landscape, followed by a temporary exhibition floor. Finally, there is a restaurant on the top floor where you can grab a bite to eat and something to drink with unparalleled views of the city.

When visiting Nijmegen, things to do just outside of the city include a visit to the Afrika Museum located in a wooded area called Berg en Dal. The museum has both indoor and outdoor displays that has many traditional African artefacts, contemporary African art, photographs, videos and other African cultural exhibits.

Another fun aspect of this Nijmegen attraction is that there are several different African residential displays for you to walk through. The dwellings and other aspects of everyday life of many different African countries are right here in the Netherlands for you to explore and discover. The Pancake Boat is one of the most popular things to do in Nijmegen and it’s easy to understand why. You get to cruise on the Waal River , observe many of the Nijmegen tourist attractions and eat all the pancakes that your heart desires.

The cruise lasts 75 minutes, during which time you will get to see many of the famous bridges in Nijmegen as well as the other sights around the city. The pancakes come out fresh for the duration of the trip with an assortment of toppings that are both sweet and savoury. MuZIEum is one of the most unique museums not only in Nijmegen, but in the whole Netherlands, as it aims to recreate what everyday life is like for a blind or visually impaired person. There are two different tour experiences available – one indoors and one outdoors.

The indoor experience is called the Dark Experience and as the name suggests, it is completely dark inside and you rely on your other senses to navigate around. Your hearing, smelling and feeling senses will be called upon as you navigate and discover what life is like for these individuals during the 1.5 – 2-hour tour.

The outdoor experience is called Expedition Ripple Route and you will have to navigate in everyday life without being able to rely on your vision. You will have a sort of VR headset covering your eyes and will be helped along by one of the visually impaired experts who will take you through the 1.5 – 2-hour tour.

If at this point you’re still asking yourself what to see in Nijmegen, fear not. We’re just getting started. The Infocentre WW2 is the next on the list of the many places to visit in Nijmegen – an information point that covers information regarding World War 2 in the Nijmegen area. From stories and information to heritage sites, events and more, the centre covers it all.

Nijmegen was the first Dutch city to be invaded by the Germans in 1940 and was heavily bombed by the Allies. In 1944 the city was in the middle of Operation Market Garden .

You will be able to gather all the information you require at the centre, and it also serves as the assembly point for historical tours and walks through the city. Aside from this, there are also several exhibits such as the interactive wall, the experience, the mystery, city under siege and the hologram display case.

Stevenskerk is definitely one of the top places to visit in Nijmegen as it is both the oldest and the largest church in the city. Built on a small hill called the Hundisburg , construction began in the mid-13th century. Over the next few hundred years, more construction took place until around 1650.

During WWII, a lot of damage to the church occurred and therefore it underwent extensive renovations. Today, the church is considered the “ heart of the city ” and no visit to Nijmegen is complete without a visit to the Stevenskerk.

A visit to Kronenburgerpark , located in the city centre close to the railway station, is one of the favourite things to do in Nijmegen. There are medieval remains in the park as well as the Kruittoren – a powder tower that dates back to 1425 – a real piece of Nijmegen history.

A visit to the park to walk around, relax on a bench or simply observe and immerse yourself in the natural beauty is highly recommended, given its close proximity to the city.

Valkhof Park is another one of the things to do in Nijmegen that doesn’t cost you a cent. The park is also perched on top of a small hill that provides great views of the city and De Waal River.

The walk around the park is scenic and is the perfect escape from the busy centre – a nice way to relax and have a snack or read your book. In the middle of the park you’ll find the Carolingian Chapel of St. Nicholas . It was built around the year 1000 and is the only Romanesque building that has survived to present day in the Netherlands.

Restaurant Belvedere is one of the favourite Nijmegen attractions, sporting both great food and unparalleled views of De Waal and the surrounds. It is housed in an ancient tower that overlooks the city, serving delicious food in a professional yet relaxed environment. It’s also the perfect location for a romantic evening out with your significant other – a real treat to end off the day of exploring.

The Grote Markt is one of the most famous Nijmegen attractions – a beautiful square surrounded by old buildings with restaurants and bars a plenty. It is the main square in the city and open-air markets are still held there every week, so make sure to be around the city when it’s market day.

At the square there is a statue of a woman – the Mary of Nijmegen or Mariken van Nieumeghen – the hero of a 16-th century miracle play written in Middle Dutch.

When embarking on your Nijmegen sightseeing tour, another not-to-be-missed attraction is the Lakenhal , or Cloth Hall – the marketplace of the city. Nijmegen had a flourishing cloth trade in the 14th century. The Lakenhal ocated on the Grote Markt originates from the 14th century and was once a buzzing trading place, where wool imported from London was sold among others.

Today, Café ‘ In de Blauwe Hand ‘ is housed in the Lakenhal – a name attributed to the blue dye that stained the hands of those using it. This is also the oldest cafe in the city of Nijmegen.

De Waagh restaurant in housed in one of the most beautiful medieval buildings on the Grote Markt built in the early 17th century. This area was once used by traders and merchants where they weighed their goods before proceeding to sell them at the market.

The café-style restaurant is a must-see when exploring the Grote Markt area and surround for a quick snack, drink or full meal. Remnants of the old market such as cobbled floors, wrought-iron chandeliers and a huge scale still remain today.

The Historical Town Hall ( het Oude Stadhuis ) in Nijmegen was is the oldest part of the town hall and dates back to 1555. It was built in line with the early Renaissance style. Today, the building still functions as a town hall. In the catacombs under the town hall there used to be torture chambers, luckily decommissioned today. The Town Hall was destroyed by a fire during WWII in 1944 but has since been restored to its former glory. The Town Hall can be visited with a guided tour organized by Gilde Nijmegen .

Walking along the Lange Hezelstraat is one of the things to do in Nijmegen that can’t be missed – it’s the oldest shopping street in the entire country! Lange Hezelstraat is home to family-run shops, cafes, restaurants and bars and no trip to the city is complete without along this street.

The Besiendershuis was built in 1525 in the Lower Rhine Gothic architectural style and inhabited by patricians. It is rumoured that the name came from the person who collected toll from passing ships – a besiender . One of the special features of the house was the hanging room which was a room hanging from the ceiling of another room, connected by a staircase.

One of the favourite things to do in Nijmegen in the summer months is to go down to Waalstrand for a spot of sunbathing and swimming. It’s a small, quaint beach perfect for friends and family alike.

Another one of the things to see in Nijmegen is the Oude Haven – a street of historical buildings, situated where the old port once was. These former port buildings are now largely residential dwellings and make for a great photo opt and to admire the old architecture of Nijmegen.

Located in the Valkhof Park, the Barbarossa Ruin is a remarkable monument. A stone’s throw from the city centre, this once religious building is a great place to take a stroll to for a break from the buzzing city and to take a look into the historical side of Nijmegen. The ruin is a remnant from the apse of the chapel that was part of the palace built 1155 by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa .

Given this extensive list of things to do in Nijmegen, you will have no time to sit around bored when visiting the oldest city in the Netherlands. From the wonderful museums in Nijmegen, the ancient Roman findings, and of course, the Pancake Boat tours, there really is so much to see and do in this amazing city.

It’s always fascinating learning about a city that isn’t spoken about or overly visited by tourists, which adds to the charm and attraction of visiting. Mariken van Nieumeghen is a miracle play recorded in a Middle Dutch text from the early 16th century. The protagonist Mariken of the story spends seven years with the devil, after which she is miraculously released. The oldest edition dates from 1515 and was printed by Willem Vorsterman. Linguistic evidence suggests it was written by a poet from an Antwerp chamber of rhetoric.

The Titus Brandsma Chapel is a municipal monument from 1960 at Kroonstraat 114 in Nijmegen. The chapel and accompanying pylon were designed by Nijmegen architect Pieter Dijkema, who was inspired by the ideas of the Bossche School. The brick façades are closed, windowless and soberly executed. Above the entrance is a mosaic of the Virgin and Child, inside on the back wall a painting of Christ; both works by artist Jan van Eyk.

The Powder Tower is a remnant of the old ramparts of Nijmegen and is located on the Parkweg, on the edge of the Kronenburgerpark. The tower was erected in 1426 and is about 30 meters high. In the nineteenth century, when the fortifications were sold, the state deliberately kept ownership of the tower in order to prevent the tower from being demolished. Until 15 January 2016, the tower was owned by the Government Buildings Agency, when it was transferred to the National Monuments Organisation (NMo).

Things To Do In One day In Nijmegen, The Netherlands

Nijmegen is a city that has plenty of things to do. You will find that this itinerary to spending one day in Nijmegen is helpful to get a quick feel of Nijmegen. However, if you have time to spend two days in Nijmegen that will definitely help you. There are great hotels to be found in Nijmegen and even hostels and b&b’s, so you don’t need to worry about that. The province of Gelderland is not often explored by foreign tourists, which needs to change. Now, I don’t want Nijmegen to get the next Amsterdam, but it’s a city that is worth exploring.

Nijmegen is a beautiful city in the province of Gelderland and not often visited by tourists. Nijmegen is also a great town to take a day trip to from Amsterdam, Rotterdam or Utrecht.

Nijmegen is most likely the oldest city of The Netherlands. In 2005 Nijmegen celebrated its 2000-year existence. It was part of the Roman Empire for a lot of years, so if you’re a history buff like me, Nijmegen is a great city to visit. However, if you’re not that into history Nijmegen is a perfect city to visit as well. As you read through this itinerary for spending one day in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, you will see that there are plenty of things to do in Nijmegen. And this is only an itinerary for one day, so I picked some of the highlights.

Things to do in one day in Nijmegen, The Netherlands

Best breakfast in nijmegen.

The best way to start a day in Nijmegen is with breakfast. You can find three lovely cafes in Nijmegen right here. It was impossible to list just one breakfast spot in Nijmegen, so here you have two of my favourites.

Bairro Alto Bairro Alto is located behind one of the busiest squares of Nijmegen, the Grote Markt, but somehow you will find that Bairro Alto is a breath of fresh air. It smells like cake and coffee, although I am not too fond of coffee, this smell still makes me happy. You can find great vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free options in this café in Nijmegen. The atmosphere of Bairro Alto is lovely, the only downside is that they open from 10:00 and not earlier. Don’t forget to buy the salted caramel brownie for a snack during the day.

Down Town is a wonderful cafe in the centre of Nijmegen. The interior feels very much like a living room and is peaceful. The food at this breakfast spot in Nijmegen is fresh and even looks great. This restaurant is one of my most favourites in Nijmegen for breakfast.

I usually prefer to explore the city on my own, so without any guides. Most beautiful monuments of Nijmegen

City hall or stadhuis: The old city hall of Nijmegen can be found at the Burchtstraat in Nijmegen. It was built between 1554 and 1555 in an early Renaissanse style.

Glashuis: The Sint-Jacobskapel or Glashuis is a chapel that was built in the 15th century as part of a hospital called St. Jacobs. After the siege of Nijmegen the chapel lost its religious function in. Later on there was a glass factory, a school, storage space, cow stable, an orphanage and even a house. For shopping in Nijmegen, you have to visit the Lange Hezelstraat. This shopping street is the oldest shopping street in The Netherlands. It also has the cutest shops and boutiques of Nijmegen and surroundings. When you’re there, you have to step into the Stikke Hezelstraat as well. These two streets are the place to be for some good shopping in Nijmegen.

Eat the best lunch in Nijmegen

After a long, but fulfilling morning exploring Nijmegen you must be starving by now. Below you can find one of the best lunch cafes/ restaurants in Nijmegen, so you’ll be finding good food there.

At Fika you can find great sandwiches in a Scandinavian setting. This is the ideal breakfast or lunch cafe in Nijmegen. The atmosphere at Fika is great, the staff is friendly and the food is delicious. That’s all that matters.

Explore the nature reserve De Ooijpolder and Duffelt area on the outskirts of Nijmegen

This nature reserve can be found just East of Nijmegen and is a beautiful reserve to cycle and walk through. De Ooijpolder together with the Duffelt form a stunning area. You will see a vast landscape with idyllic villages, typical Dutch farms and beautiful nature. De Ooijpolder is the nature reserve, but the Duffelt area surrounds it.

Even though Nijmegen is not a big city, I always prefer to at least get to see a little nature when I’m exploring an area or city. Whether it’s a park or a nature reserve just around the corner, it’s both great.

In De Ooijpolder you will smell the freshly mowed grass and meet some friendly cows. The best part about this nature reserve near Nijmegen is that you can climb over some fences and walk through meadows and special paths. Keep in mind, you’re not allowed to climb over every fence. In De Ooijpolder there are 9 walking routes that will send you through farmland. The routes vary in length from 3-10 kilometres.

So, if you’re looking for a calm area, visiting nature reserve De Ooijpolder in Nijmegen is a wonderful idea.

Visit more museums in Nijmegen

If the weather isn’t in your favour, or you’re not a fan of some of the things on this list, then a great thing is that Nijmegen has plenty of more great things to do. There are many more museums in Nijmegen than just the Afrika Museum. I would recommend you visit the Nationaal Bevrijdingsmuseum (National liberation Museum) and Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen.

The National Liberation Museum of Nijmegen , The Netherlands, is a wonderful museum when you’re interested in the second World War. Here you will learn about the international and national events that were critical for the liberation of The Netherlands. But also for the rest of Europe in 1944 and 1945. In the liberation museum in Nijmegen, you will get to know the economic, political and cultural effects of the war and the years after. This history will be combined with current issues in the world when it comes to democracy, freedom and human rights. The location of the Liberation Museum is also very interesting. One of the largest air landing operations in history took place here. During the famous Operation Market Garden in September 1944.

Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen has a very big collection of modern art and old masters, as well as Roman antiquities. When you’re walking to Museum Het Valkhof there’s a big chance that you came from the historic Valkhof Park. If you didn’t, take a walk through this beautiful park in Nijmegen. In Museum Het Valkhof you can find several routes through exhibitions. And at the long glass gallery, you can even find a panoramic view of the river landscape. If you’re interested in getting to know more about the Roman history of Nijmegen and are interested in art, then visiting Museum Het Valkhof is a great choice.

Visit the brewery De Hemel + tasting

You can tour the Brouwerij De Hemel (translation Brewery Heaven) on Saturday and Sunday without making an appointment. You will be taking a unique inside look in the brewery. This craft beer brewery in Nijmegen is the oldest craft beer brewery of The Netherlands and located in one of the oldest buildings of Nijmegen. With a guided tour you will get to know everything about the beers that are produced here, the process and techniques that are used. Visiting the brewery is always accompanied by a tasting session of the products that are made in the brewery.

You can visit De Hemel on Saturday and Sunday between 13:00 – 17:00. If you’re with a group with at least 10 persons you can visit the brewery every day of the week, if you reserve in advance.

Enjoy the beaches of the Waal river

After a few beers, it’s time to walk around Nijmegen so the alcohol will affect you a bit less. Take a walk along the beaches of the Waal river and make some friends with the cows and horses that live in this nature park.

As soon as the first ray of sunshine reaches the city of Nijmegen you will find that people flock to the Waalstrandjes or Waal beaches. You can even swim in the river while big ships sail in the middle of the river. There are no lifeguards, so if you cannot swim, don’t even think about going for a swim into the Waal river in Nijmegen. You will die or bring other people in danger.

There are several beaches that you can go to. Some can be found just below the train bridge that will lead you into Nijmegen, others are hidden more to the Eastern part of the city. I will put two addresses here that are closest to the two beaches. In one area you will find the horses and cows, but not in both areas. Always keep your distance and never feed the animals.

2.  Ossenwaardpad. You will reach these beaches in Nijmegen by walking on the spoorbrug. From here you will see stairs that will lead you to the beaches.

Nijmegen has plenty of great restaurants. It’s impossible to list all of the best restaurants of Nijmegen in this one-day itinerary. However, I have listed three of my favourite restaurants in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. If you’re looking for good food and a great dinner in Nijmegen, then visiting these restaurants is a great idea.

De Meesterproef

Restaurant De Meesterproef in Nijmegen has an big, open kitchen, a spacious terrace and a beautiful interior. It’s located inside an old factory, which you will see straight away. In my opinion, that adds a lot to the atmosphere. The menu of De Meesterproef was a surprise to me. The menu at this great restaurant in Nijmegen is nothing like any other restaurants, which results in some very special and modern dishes.

De Nieuwe Winkel

De Nieuwe Winkel is a great restaurant in Nijmegen. The food at De Nieuwe Winkel in Nijmegen is surprising to say the least. Your tastebuds will be very happy that you’ve decided to bring this restaurant in Nijmegen a visit.

Take a walk along the Waal river and through Nijmegen in the evening

One of the things I prefer to do after dinner is going for a walk. As the evening falls you will notice a change in the city of Nijmegen. So taking a walk along the Waal river and through Nijmegen is the best way to enjoy the peaceful city in the evening.

Finish the day with going for drinks in Nijmegen

Nijmegen is a city that is very popular with students and Nijmegen is at the same time very authentic. This means that there are great brown cafes and bars that you can visit in Nijmegen. From the oldest cafe of Nijmegen to getting a drink at a bar. It’s all here.

Cafe in De Blaauwe Hand is the oldest cafe of Nijmegen, and a great spot to go for drinks. It’s located in a building from the year 1320. Cafe In De Blaauwe Hand exists since 1542. And although it wasn’t originally named the way it is now, people always called the cafe In De Blaauwe Hand ever since 1542. Get one of the beers that are brewed at the Stadsbrouwerij De Hemel.

From Amsterdam : The best way to get from Amsterdam to Nijmegen is by train. Take the intercity in the direction of Nijmegen from Amsterdam Centraal. Get out at Nijmegen. From Amsterdam to Nijmegen it will take you around 1,5 hours.

From Utrecht : If you want to make a day trip from Utrecht to Nijmegen then you have to take the train as well. Take the intercity in the direction of Nijmegen and get out at Nijmegen. The train ride from Utrecht to Nijmegen will take you around 55 minutes.

From Rotterdam : When you want to make a day trip from Rotterdam, Nijmegen is a perfect option. Take the train from Rotterdam Centraal in the direction of Eindhoven. Get out at Breda station. Then transfer to the intercity in the direction of Zwolle and get out at Nijmegen.

Or you can take the train from Rotterdam Centraal in the direction of Utrecht Centraal. At Utrecht Centraal, you transfer to the intercity in the direction of Nijmegen. From Rotterdam to Nijmegen by train will take you around 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Nijmegen – 82nd Airborne Battlefield Tour

The 82nd Airborne Division had to secure crossings at two major rivers and a canal, take the city of Nijmegen and secure the Groesbeek Heights. A tall order for an Airborne Division to undertake!

This tour will take us on a clockwise loop around the objectives and battles of the All Americans, beginning at the bridge at Grave. We’ll then drive to the lock bridge at Heumen (Molenhoek), the only bridge across the Maas-Waal Canal captured intact.

Our next stop will be the landing zones south of Groesbeek and then the desperate battle to recapture the landing zones to the north. We will then pay our respects to the fallen at the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, one of only 3 cemeteries for Canadian soldiers in the Netherlands.

Then we’ll move to Devils Hill, which dominates the eastern approach of Nijmegen which was contested for days in fierce, often hand to hand, combat.

After a short drive, we will visit the location of the Waal River crossing which we will remember by walking across the bridge to visit the monument on the North bank. Our last stop will the road bridge at Nijmegen, where we will look at the battles fought to capture the biggest bridge of Operation Market Garden.

This tour begins at 09:00h at the Nijmegen railway station and we will visit the following locations:

• Road bridge across the Maas River at Grave
• Lock bridge across the Maas Waal canal at Heumen
• Drop and landing zones around Groesbeek with a visit to the replica Waco glider

This tour takes around 8 hours and ends around 17:00h (5PM) at the Nijmegen railway station.

Tissues at the ready, “ The Grand Tour ” fans – the last ever episode is gearing up to be a tear-jerker.

Prime Video has released a nearly three-minute-long trailer for the final episode, “The Grand Tour: One for the Road,” which sees hosts Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond and James May head to Zimbabwe on what is being billed as their last ever episode.

Clarkson, Hammond and May first teamed up on BBC motoring series “ Top Gear ” in 2002. After Clarkson was fired from the show for punching a producer, his co-hosts left in solidarity. The trio were soon scooped up by Prime Video to host another motoring show, “The Grand Tour,” in 2016, which was similar in tone and theme to “Top Gear.”

“I shall certainly miss doing this sort of thing,” Clakson admits in the trailer as he zips down a road in Zimbabwe.

In a synopsis for the special, Prime Video tease: “In their last adventure, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May ignore the instructions of Mr Wilman and head to Zimbabwe in three cars they’ve always wanted to own, a Lancia Montecarlo, a Ford Capri 3-litre, and a Triumph Stag, for a stunning road trip through beautiful and sometimes challenging landscapes leading to an emotional ending on a strangely familiar island.”

In one scene, teased in the trailer, the three men are tinkering with what appears to be a broken-down car when Hammond quips: “We don’t all have to go to the same old folks home do we, I mean it’s not obligatory after this?”

Clarkson, gesturing to May, laughingly retorts: “He said he’s deleting our numbers as soon as we finish!”

The TOUR Championship utilizes the FedExCup Starting Strokes format to reward players who’ve had the best seasons thus far. They’ve earned an advantage over their competition for the final week that decides the FedExCup.

From a betting perspective, players’ scores this week (not including the Starting Strokes) are also important. There was an active betting market for the low 72-hole score this week.

Collin Morikawa finished second behind FedExCup champ Scottie Scheffler on the overall scoreboard, but he left East Lake with the lowest 72-hole score among the 30-man field. Morikawa had the fourth-lowest odds (+1600) entering the week at BetMGM Sportsbook to have the lowest 72-hole score.

Morikawa’s final-round 66 meant he played four rounds in 22-under, with a 26-under total including his Starting Strokes. Morikawa’s 22-under 262 finished the week one shot ahead of Sahith Theegala, who closed with a 64, and two shots clear of Scheffler for the 72-hole score.

Morikawa and Theegala (24-under) finished solo second and solo third, respectively, on the final leaderboard behind Scheffler (30-under) when Starting Strokes were included.

2024 Tour Championship TV schedule, where to watch FedEx Cup Playoffs coverage, live stream, channel, radio

The final event of the 2024 pga tour season concludes sunday at a newly restored east lake golf club.

For the third straight season, Scottie Scheffler entered the Tour Championship with an inside track to win the FedEx Cup crown. For the first time, he pushed his lead ahead substantially after 18 holes and maintained it through three rounds at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele were hot on Scheffler's tail entering the weekend, though now it is only Morikawa in striking position as the final 18 holes begin Sunday.

With a newly restored East Lake Golf Club and a hungry chasing pack nipping at his heels, the season-long race will not be handed to Scheffler, who dropped a six-shot lead over the fourth round at this event in 2022 to lose to Rory McIlroy. Morikawa stands five shots behind Scheffler with the former looking for his first victory of the season while the latter attempts to round out an all-time campaign that already includes a green jacket and Olympic gold medal.

Schauffele, with two major wins this season, St. Jude Championship winner Hideki Matsuyama and BMW Championship winner Keegan Bradley rounded out those closest to Scheffler as the tournament began, though it has been Morikawa that made up the most ground over the first 54 holes. McIlroy, Sahith Theegala, Wyndham Clark, Sam Burns and Adam Scott are all others chasing money on Sunday. However, none are within striking distance of the No. 1 golfer in the world.

Pope, 87, Embarks on ‘Physical Test’ in Grueling Asia Tour

The 11-day trip, a signal that Francis does not intend to slow down, requires nearly 45 hours of air travel and meetings in tropical climates.

Pope Francis left Monday on an 11-day trip to the Asia-Pacific region, the longest and among the most complicated of his tenure. It could be particularly challenging for Francis, 87, who has been using a wheelchair and battling health problems.

But the trip, which includes a stop in Indonesia — the world’s largest Muslim majority country — also signals he has no intention of slowing down his outreach to faraway Catholics.

Francis will visit four countries for a total of about 20,000 miles by plane. From Indonesia he goes to Papua New Guinea, then East Timor and Singapore, as he deepens his engagement with Asia, one of his priorities.

The trip will include more than 43 hours of air travel and meetings with local faithful, clergy and politicians in cities with tropical climates or high levels of pollution on the other side of the world from Rome.

“It’s a physical test,” said Massimo Faggioli, a professor of theology at Villanova University, “and a sign that this pontificate is far from being over.”

Why is he visiting these countries?

The pope chose four island nations as he extends his outreach to what he calls “the peripheries,” a term for overlooked, faraway places with small, minority or persecuted Catholic communities. The trip is also one of Francis’ boldest engagements with Asia, a fast-growing part of the world, which the pope has always regarded as a strategic objective.

Francis made a largely secretive deal with China in 2018 for the appointment of bishops, but not all issues have been resolved, as China’s government still exerts strong political control over religious life, said Gianni Criveller, dean of studies at the PIME International Missionary School of Theology in Milan.

While no pope has been able to visit China, Francis has taken trips, such as to Mongolia, that have basically put him on China’s doorstep. This time as well, Mr. Faggioli said, the trip is seen as an attempt to “talk to countries he can’t go to.”

He said the trip also showed Francis’ ambition to make the Roman Catholic Church truly global — drawing attention to areas not traditionally of Christian culture and where Catholicism coexists with other religions, relying on the communities’ devotion rather than on wealth, endowments or a historical hegemony.

Unlike in Europe, the Catholic church in Asia does not “rest on its laurels,” said Mr. Faggioli, and believing is in some cases still an act of resistance.

“He sends a message to all the Catholics,” Mr. Faggioli said. “That the future of the church looks more like these churches in which we are a minority than those in which we are a majority.”

The pope’s first stop, Indonesia, also reflects Francis’ commitment to promoting dialogue between Muslims and Christians. He was the first pope to visit the Arabian Peninsula , in 2019.

He is also likely to urge global action to protect the environment, in a part of the world that is particularly vulnerable to climate change, including rising sea levels and severe weather events like droughts and typhoons.

Is the pope too frail for such a trip?

The Vatican originally had considered the trip for 2020 but canceled it because of the pandemic. Despite being older now, the pope is committed to showing that despite his age and ailments he is “still alive though some wanted me dead,” as he once joked .

In recent years, Francis’ health has been a source of concern. Within three years, he underwent a hernia operation, had colon surgery and was hospitalized for a respiratory infection. Last year, he did not attend a summit in Dubai because of health problems.

Still, the pope has been seen walking in recent weeks, instead of using a wheelchair, as he has increasingly done.

In the 11-day trip, he will be accompanied by his medical team (two nurses and a doctor) and, in a first, by his secretaries. Matteo Bruni, the Vatican’s spokesman, said at a news briefing on Friday that no extra precautions were taken for this trip, as the measures they normally adopt were considered sufficient.

Still, the ambitious itinerary for the octogenarian leader of the world’s Roman Catholics inevitably has stirred questions about the impact on his health.

Reporters questioned Mr. Bruni about the 92 percent humidity that the pope would face in Vanimo, a town tucked between Papua New Guinea’s rainforest and the Pacific Ocean. Markus Solo, an Indonesian priest who focuses on interfaith dialogue at the Vatican, said he worried about the impact that Jakarta’s high pollution could have, partly because Francis lost part of a lung to infection as a teenager.

“Hopefully, the government will do something in order to reduce the pollution during the visit,” he said.

The head of the Environmental Service of Jakarta, Asep Kuswanto, said no specific plans for curbing air pollution had been made for the pope’s visit.

Still, it appeared that some measures had been taken to protect the pope’s health. Francis was not expected to visit Flores, a predominantly Catholic Indonesian island.

“His health condition doesn’t permit him to go all that way,” said Father Solo, originally from Flores. “We have to be very prudent.”

Ismail Cawidu, a senior official at Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, an important stop on the visit, said that the pope would not tour the inside of the mosque but instead meet other religious leaders at a plaza outside.

Mr. Ismail said they had asked the Vatican if the pope could cross the “tunnel of friendship” that connects the mosque, Southeast Asia’s largest, with a Catholic cathedral but were still awaiting a response.

What can we expect from the trip?

Indonesia has a large Christian population, with a lively Catholic community. The country has been considered an example of interfaith tolerance but is still facing challenges to its image, as extremist Islamic groups have exerted growing pressure on other religions.

The pope’s visit to the Istiqlal mosque will include a meeting with representatives of the country’s officially recognized religions — Islam, Buddhism, Confucianism, Hinduism and Catholic and Protestant Christianity. He will also celebrate Mass at a stadium in the city, where tens of thousands are likely to attend.

Papua New Guinea, where more than 800 languages are spoken, is one of the world’s poorest countries, and Pope Francis “wants to send a message that he can reach everyone, that nobody is too far away,” Father Criveller said. After spending most of next weekend in Port Moresby, the capital, Francis will fly north to the coastal town of Vanimo, and he may address the issue of protecting nature from extractive businesses and the effects of climate change.

In East Timor, Asia’s newest nation and the only predominantly Catholic country on the trip, Francis is to follow in the footsteps of John Paul II, who also visited the conflict-scarred nation. Francis may face questions over the scandal involving Carlos Ximenes Belo , a Nobel-winning bishop and independence hero who the Vatican acknowledged had sexually abused young boys.

In Singapore, an economic powerhouse with a blend of Asian ethnicities and religions, Francis will witness one of the world’s most diverse societies up close, as well as a small but dynamic Catholic community, where the faithful still crowd pews.
