Taylor Swift may have her “Eras” tour, but you can bet it’s not nearly as provocative as Sam Smith’s current jaunt, which could easily be tagged the “Eros” tour.

The 32-year-old, five-time Grammy-winning singer and songwriter — who identifies as non-binary — brought their extravagant “Gloria” trek to Scotiabank Arena on Friday night, with home girl Jessie Reyez in tow, and it was a sexy and sensational piece of theatre that became more and more risqué the longer it continued.

Offering one of the most unexpected and ornate stage sets this pair of eyes has witnessed — a stagewide supersized golden naked Venus, seemingly in a state of sexual ecstasy, lying on her stomach, buttocks exposed, the path to her legs interrupted by a staircase — served as both a backdrop and a playground for the performer and a team of six dancers.

Thanks to the use of hydraulics, Smith and the drummer of his excellent, seven-piece band constantly disappeared and reappeared behind this prone behemoth throughout their two-hour set, allowing them to surprise with several gender-blurring wardrobe changes.

Smith’s headlining set began innocently enough: wearing a corset over their shirt-and-leather pants combo, complemented by platform shoes, the blond performer launched their angelic voice into “Stay With Me” from high atop the motionless figure as the estimated audience of 14,000 — a few of them sporting glowing red devil horns — suddenly converted themselves into a choir and joined in song.

The momentum didn’t stop there: another hit, “I’m Not the Only One,” was also vocally embraced by the crowd and, after the number was finished, Smith addressed the masses to declare that “this show is about one thing — and about one thing only — it’s about freedom!”

After encouraging the crowd to have fun, “take their tops off” and just go wild, Smith delved into a couple more early catalogue favourites — “Like I Can” and “Too Good at Goodbyes” — before Reyez came out to duet with Smith on “Perfect.”

It should be noted that Reyez opened the show, playing before her biggest Toronto crowd ever, and gave every indication that the city has a budding global superstar in its midst.

Wonderfully outspoken and delightfully foul-mouthed, Reyez is a verbal and creative straight shooter who has cornered the market on heartbreak anthems, and whose unique singing embraces and embodies all the pain, anguish, anger, suffering, torture and defiance that shattered romance stirs.

Dressed in jeans and a white halter top, Reyez performed an intense 35-minute set that included a scintillating version of “Gatekeeper,” the story of how she was confronted by an amoral music producer who insisted that while she could sing, she’d have to “put out” (I’m offering the polite version of what was actually said) to make it in the business.

“If you been through it, where someone tried to exercise some power over you and it was a f- -ked up dynamic, I hope this moment in the show feels cathartic for you, because it’s cathartic as f—k for me.”

What followed was five minutes of powerful venting, Reyez running back and forth, sinking to her knees as the lighting gave the visual impression of her being imprisoned in a jail of hurt and emotion, her voice a hammer of frustration. She poured so much raw passion into the song that it took her a moment to catch her breath as the audience cheered her effort.

But Reyez’s set was not devoid of humour; the talkative hostess joked around a lot, even declaring her portion of the show “a no-shame zone” and proclaiming that the performance was “our first date.”

“Who here is as single as a dollar bill?” she asked, before performing “Only One.”

“Look around: see who’s single! Don’t say I never did nothing for you. OK, you’re welcome!”

In dedicating “Forever/Imported” to a female couple who had successfully made it “out of the friend zone,” Reyez wished them well … with a caveat.

“Congrats on you guys finding each other,” she said. “I hope you stay together forever or until it gets toxic and, in that case, good luck!”

The point is that during her entire time onstage, Reyez — who ended her set with her hit “Figures” — oozed charisma to the point you couldn’t take your eyes off her and were glued to her every move.

Whatever that undefinable “it” quality is that makes you a star, Reyez has been blessed with an unlimited supply, and the honest music she makes will be key to her ascendance once she breaks through to the mainstream with that one special song.

Reyez, a guest on Smith’s “Gloria” album, made a return to the headliner’s set during the second act, cavorting with dancers on “Gimme,” when Smith had changed into a silver and white ball gown; had delivered a note-perfect, sweetly sung version of “Lay Me Down” with pianist Ruth O’Mahoney Brady, and was ready to cut loose and get frisky.

What followed were more costume changes, Smith peeling off their shirt as four male dancers caressed their chest while an instrumental version of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” throbbed throughout the arena.

But the pièce-de-résistance occurred during the final act, entitled “Sex.”

Emerging from beneath their Venus, Smith, covered head-to-toe in a white veil, sang “Gloria,” a song resembling an a cappella hymn and intimating religious reverence, before the dancers removes Smith’s head covering and revealed the bare-chested entertainer wearing thigh-high black boots, fishnet stockings and a bikini bottom.

Their version of Madonna’s “Human Nature” led to the moment all the Smith fans were waiting for: the Grammy-winning “Unholy,” as Smith — adding a corset and top hat with devil horns to the mix — provided the show-stopping moment.

Yes, this pop soul pacesetter offered an incendiary statement on what’s considered acceptable by society standards, but the subtext of this concert was based on some recorded music that played during one of the transitions: “Express yourself, don’t repress yourself!”

So much mental distress is caused by those living a lie and not able to be true to themselves — sexually, politically, socially, whatever — due to fear of potential negative consequences.

Smith’s combustible performance bravely symbolized triumph over adversity, their message being that one should never be afraid of being oneself, and it was an effective one.

Some great food for thought and the crowd loved it.

Sam Smith Schedules 27-Date ‘Gloria’ North American Tour

Sam Smith will spend their summer on the road completing a 27-date tour in support of their forthcoming fourth studio album Gloria , set for release on January 27.

The tour will begin on July 25 at FTX Arena in Miami, Florida, with support from Jessie Reyez, who will join them for all but one date. Smith will make stops in Orlando, Nashville, New York, Toronto, Chicago, Denver, Seattle, Houston, Monterrey, and more before concluding on Sept. 14 at Palacio de Los Deportes in Cuidad de Mexico.

Sam Smith - Gloria Tour

Grammy-winning artist Sam Smith has announced an epic 2023 tour across North America behind their next album 'Gloria'. The 25-city excursion kicks off July 25th in Miami and continues into September visiting major U.S. markets like Philadelphia, Washington DC, New York, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco and Houston. Canadian shows are planned for Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Prior to the tour, the singer will be heading over to Europe during the spring.

Sam Smith announced Thursday that their upcoming tour will include three stops in Canada.

GLORIA The Tour will hit the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on Aug. 11 and Montreal’s Bell Centre on Aug. 12 and will return north on Aug. 22 for a show at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.

It is the first North American tour for Smith since 2018's  The Thrill of It All Tour , which touched down in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary.

Canada’s Jessie Reyez, who is featured on Smith’s forthcoming album Gloria (out Jan. 27), will be the opening act.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Jan. 13 at 9 a.m. local time.

"This is going to be so special," the 30-year-old singer wrote on Instagram. "It's been too long sailors!! Can't wait to see all your gorgeous faces and celebrate the era of GLORIA together.

This concert was absolutely amazing! His voice was so angelic and he was so genuine and humble. Every time he smiled it melted my heart because you could tell how grateful he was and how much he loves his life and it was just so beautiful! Everyone was there to just have a good time and everyone was singing along and it was such an incredible environment. One of the best moments was when someone from the crowd threw a rainbow flag on the stage during his song “HIM” and he took it a waved it around while everyone cheered in support of gay rights, it was so amazing. He is so inspiring and honestly my favorite artist. This was hands down the best concert I’ve ever been to, and I never wanted it to end. One of the best nights of my life.

One of the best shows I’ve ever been to, so emotional and it still a happy show. When he played we could feel everything he was singing about, we felt his emotions. The whole concert was amazing, the opening show (Lewis Capaldi) was really good, love his voice and the songs he played. What I loved most about Sam Smith was the simplicity of his concert, there was no need for an elaborated scene, we’re there to see him and his singing, not a big show with a lot of dancing and decorations (not saying concerts who have that are bad, I actually really like them, what I mean is that he doesn’t need that to be great). Also, the decorations were so cool and amazing, and his speeches were simply beautiful and powerful LOVE IS LOVE!❤️

Everything about the show was amazing, ypu touch everyone in the auditorium. The songs you decided to sing were excellent and the feeling you put to every song you showed it in your eyes. After every song you smiled to the public and that made us more excited to be there and sometimes put tiers of excitement in our eyes. We could all related to your songs in different ways. You are an inspiration to me. I'm so happy I got the opportunity to see you after the show and get your autograph in my ticket and sweatshirt. That night it's going to be unforgettable for every person that was there that night and the night before. Hope I have the opportunity to see you again here in Mexico City.

“Unholy” hitmaker  Sam Smith , 30, first announced the  Gloria  tour on Jan. 5, 2023, with a stunning golden-hued poster. “This is going to be so special, it’s been too long sailors!! Can’t wait to see all your gorgeous faces and celebrate the era of GLORIA together,” the nonbinary musician captioned the photo that day. Sam kicked off the first show in Sheffield, UK at the Utilita Arena on Apr. 12, 2023, and fans have already taken to social media to spill the inside scoop on the set list and more! Sam Smith’s ‘Gloria’ Tour Setlist

The London native confirmed that the show is divided into three acts one day ahead of the first performance on Apr. 11. “Gloria The Tour Act I / Act II / Act III,” they captioned the announcement, which notably featured the names of the acts in gold glitter. Act I is titled “LOVE”, while Act II is “Beauty”, and Act III “SEX”. Fans also took to Twitter to reveal the setlist for the  Gloria  tour, however, it is likely that there will be some song changes along the way. Below is the complete set list as of Apr. 12, 2023:

The show kicked off with Sam performing on top of a massive golden figure, which was spread across the stage (see photo here ). They belted out their 2014 hit “Stay With Me”, as the crowd went wild over seeing Sam on stage. They have not been on tour in five years, as their last tour was the The Thrill of It All Tour  in 2018. Sam’s first outfit wowed the crowd, as it featured gold trousers, a gold corset, and a white button-up top. They completed their first look with a gold hat, a black tie, and a jacket over their shoulder. Sam also shared the look via Instagram and captioned it, “WELCOME TO MY GAY CABARET.” Later, Sam was spotted wearing an all-gold suit sans a shirt (watch video here ).

Secret Songs

As the show just kicked off on Apr. 12, and the songs performed are listed above, there are no surprise songs on the set list at this time. Despite this, it is common practice for musicians to add “secret” songs to the set list as the tour goes along, similarly to Taylor Swift at her Eras Tour . On the day of the first show, Apr. 12, of the  Gloria  tour, Sam took to Instagram to share an emotional video about their return to the stage after years without touring. “We kick off tonight in Sheffield and I’m so excited,” they said at the start of the clip. “I feel like I’ve been gearing up for this show my whole life honestly.” Later, Sam went into what inspired much of the tour. “What a lot of people don’t know about my roots and where I come from is how much I love theater,” they went on. “Even with all the pop shows I’ve done, I’ve always tried to bring an element of drama… and I really feel like this time I’ve been able to make the show of my dreams.”
