DC Councilman Trayon White's Office releases statement following arrest on bribery charge

Dc council member asks for 'support, understanding' amid federal charges.

Councilmember Trayon White released a statement a day after he was arrested by agents with the FBI. FOX 5's Sierra Fox has the latest details.

WASHINGTON - Councilmember Trayon White's Office has released a statement a day after he was arrested by agents with the FBI.

White faces one count of bribery for allegedly accepting $156,000 in cash payments in exchange for using his position as a D.C. Councilmember to pressure government employees at Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (ONSE) and DYRS to extend several D.C. contracts.

In the statement, White’s office asked for the "support and understanding of the community" at this time.

"The Office of Councilmember Trayon White, Sr. acknowledges the recent criminal complaint against Councilmember White," the statement reads . 

"We recognize the seriousness of this matter. We want to assure Ward 8 residents and stakeholders that our office remains fully operational and steadfast in our commitment to serving the public. Our staff continues to work diligently to address the needs of our constituents, ensuring that essential services and initiatives are not disrupted."

Former Councilwoman Mary Cheh says the situation is disappointing.

"It was especially a betrayal by him because he touted himself as a man of the people and yet he was stealing from people,"  former D.C. councilwoman Mary Cheh said.

Court documents include photos that appear to show White taking envelopes stuffed with cash. He is accused of pressuring government employees to renew several violence intervention contracts worth $5.2 million.

Ward 8 resident Ryan Steward says it’s unfortunate.

"He’s selfish but he’s also helping the community. I think with all politics even on a federal level you’ve got to take the sacrifices where you can to get benefits and it sucks that’s our system right now," Steward told FOX 5. 

But the money isn’t the only concern. The FBI arrested White from a Southeast apartment building in Navy Yard . Now, many people wondering if he lives there because it’s not in Ward 8. Council members are required to live in the district they serve.

"That’s basically fraud. I don’t agree with that. That’s a bad look," Steward said. "That aspect of his life kind of shows, reduces my sympathy for him, because it’s kind of like what are your true intentions? Are you trying to better yourself or better the ward?" 

 D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson released a statement to FOX 5 mentioning the federal charges against White are deeply disturbing.

"Notwithstanding the principle that a person is innocent until proven guilty, the allegations, together with the government’s affidavit are a gut punch to the public trust in the Council," Mendelson's statement read.

"Ward 8 deserves a better council member. They deserve someone who will represent them and do something for Ward 8 and he’s not the guy," said Cheh.  

There are still a lot of questions about whether or not White will be able to stay in his position.

He was released under the agreement that he to surrender his passport and any guns. His next court appearance is on Sept. 19.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. explains why is is suspending his 2024 presidential campaign.

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. on Friday dropped his White House bid and announced support for former President Donald Trump, issuing broadsides against the Democratic Party's handling of the primary election and media censorship. "…I've made the heart-wrenching decision to suspend my campaign and to support President Trump. This decision is agonizing for me because of the difficulties it causes me, and my children and my friends," said Kennedy.

Kennedy charged in an event in Phoenix, Arizona that the Democratic Party "waged continual legal warfare against both President Trump and myself," and "ran a sham primary." DOES KENNEDY'S DEPARTURE FROM THE 2024 RACE HELP TRUMP MORE THAN HARRIS?

"In an honest system, I believe I would have won the election," he argued. "I no longer believe that I have a realistic past of electoral victory in the face of this relentless, systematic censorship and media control."

Kennedy's campaign is asking swing states to remove his name from the ballot because he does not want to be a "spoiler," he said. He will remain on the ballot in states that he considers "red" or "blue," he said. "If you live in a blue state, you can vote for me without harming or helping President Trump or or Vice President Harris," Kennedy said. "In red states, the same will apply."

The former Democrat spoke a couple of hours before Trump was scheduled to hold a campaign event in nearby Glendale, Arizona. The Trump campaign on Thursday advertised that the former president would be joined by a "special guest," which further sparked speculation of a Kennedy endorsement of the Republican 2024 presidential nominee.

The announcement ends the presidential run by the longtime environmental activist and high-profile vaccine skeptic, who is the scion of the nation's most storied political dynasty.

Kennedy launched his long-shot campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in April of last year, but last October the 70-year-old candidate switched to an independent run for the White House.

While Kennedy had long identified as a Democrat and repeatedly invoked his late father Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and his uncle, President John F. Kennedy, who were both assassinated in the 1960s, Kennedy in recent years has built relationships with leaders on the right. Kennedy repeatedly invoked his father and uncle Friday in Phoenix.

President Biden's campaign and the Democratic National Committee for months repeatedly slammed Kennedy as a potential spoiler whose supporters could hand Trump a presidential election victory in November.

According to Kennedy, "Vice President Harris declined to meet or even to speak with me."

The Trump campaign, which had cheered on Kennedy when he was running against Biden as a Democrat, also started taking aim at him after he switched to an independent run, labeling him a member of the "radical left," and criticizing him for his environmental activism. "The DNC waged continual legal warfare against both President Trump and myself," said Kennedy. "Each time that our volunteers turned in those towering boxes of signatures needed to get on the ballot, the DNC dragged us into court, state after state, attempting to erase their work and disappear with the will of the voters, which signed those petitions."  "It deployed DNC-aligned judges to throw me and other candidates off the ballot, and to throw President Trump in jail." The Kennedy-Shanahan ticket has faced uphill battles nationwide to earn a spot on the presidential ballot in November. New York State recently blocked ballot access to the independent campaign altogether on August 12. According to running mate Nicole Shanahan, the campaign is facing no fewer than nine lawsuits from the Democratic Party . The campaign faces uphill legal climbs with suits in Nevada, North Carolina, Delaware and New Jersey. Trump, Shanahan said, faces 6 legal battles brought on by Democrats at the same time.  And the DNC battled Kennedy and his supporters at nearly every step as he worked to place his name on the ballot in all 50 states. "What the Democrats consider common course to win elections is the kind of ‘normalcy’ that leads to famine, sickness, and civil war. The country is ready for an administration that represents unity," Shanahan said in a social media post.

Democrats consistently have attacked both Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as anti-democracy candidates, for which RFK Jr. lambasted them in his remarks Thursday. "….Trump won’t hold autocrats accountable — because he wants to be an autocrat," said Vice President Harris at the DNC in Chicago. Following criticisms of Biden's "bullseye" commentary after the assassination attempt on former President Trump, which the president admitted he should not have said, he claimed "I’m not the guy that said, ‘I want to be a dictator on day one.’ I’m not the guy that refused to accept the outcome of the election." Biden was referring to a comment in which Trump joked to Fox News' Sean Hannity that he would be a "dictator for one day" to close the border and "drill, baby, drill" to rebuild America's energy leadership. Biden enacted dozens of executive orders during his first days in office on both the border and energy.  The relationship between Kennedy and Trump started warming earlier this year, and the two spoke last month after the assassination attempt against Trump and met in person the following day.  "In a series of long, intense discussions, I was surprised to discover that we are aligned on many key issues and those meetings," said Kennedy of the meetings.

Earlier this week, Kennedy running mate Nicole Shanahan sparked headlines by saying in a podcast interview that the campaign was considering whether to "join forces" with Trump to prevent the possibility of Vice President Kamala Harris winning the 2024 election.

"If he endorsed me, I would be honored by it. I would be very honored by it. He really has his heart in the right place," Trump said on Thursday in an interview on "Fox & Friends."

And the former president's running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio , said Wednesday in an interview on "Fox & Friends" that he hoped Kennedy "endorses the president, gets on the team, because this is about saving the country."

Kennedy's departure from the race comes as his campaign was cratering.

The last public event put on by his campaign came on July 9, in Freeport, Maine. But even before that, his poll numbers – which once stood in the teens – had faded.

The most recent Fox News national poll, conducted August 9-12, indicated Kennedy at 6% support. 

His fundraising was also in a free fall, with campaign finance reports indicating he had just $3.9 million cash on hand as of the start of July, with nearly $3.5 million in debt. "The more voters learned about RFK Jr. the less they liked him. Donald Trump isn’t earning an endorsement that’s going to help build support, he’s inheriting the baggage of a failed fringe candidate. Good riddance," said DNC Senior Advisor Mary Beth Cahill following Kennedy's speech.

In light of Kennedy's campaign modifications made Friday, the Harris-Walz campaign released a statement. Vice President Harris wants to earn your support," said Harris-Walz 2024 Campaign Chair Jen O’Malley Dillon.

There’s a corpse close to the Forest of Felicity shrine in Black Myth: Wukong which will transform you into a fox when you exhaust their dialogue. To put the spirit to rest, you need to complete its final wish: a confrontation with a corrupt monk in the temple up ahead. 

But where exactly do you need to go and how do you trigger the next part of the Black Myth: Wukong fox quest ? This guide will talk you through the steps. 

Black Myth: Wukong – where to take the fox

Once you’ve transformed into the fox, you’ll be able to turn back into it at any time (in this area) by using the Snow Fox Brush in your inventory so don’t worry if an enemy forces you to de-transform. 

Here’s what you need to do. 

• Head to the Temple Entrance shrine. 
• Run straight through the building straight ahead guarded by a monk, and outside, where you’ll come to two sets of stairs guarded by mages. 
• Take the stairs to the left and stick left at the top until you come to another mage at the top of some stairs leading down. 
• Go down these stairs and into the building opposite. 
• Inside, climb the stairs on the right and go outside on the balcony – kill the two mages here to prevent them from using lightning spells against you. 
• On the opposite side to the mages there’s a ramp up – take that and then take the stairs up just ahead of the ramp. 
• Kill the mages at the top. 
• Now transform into the white fox and head into the temple they were guarding, triggering an encounter with the Non-Void Monk. 
• Once defeated, head back to the fox spirit’s corpse and speak to it. You’ll get the Snow Fox Brush curio, which moderately increases the duration of transformations.

History of Novosibirsk Oblast

Over thousands of years, the territory of the Novosibirsk region, due to its location on the border of natural zones and cultural regions (the Siberian taiga and the Eurasian steppe), played the role of a buffer zone or border zone of different peoples.

In the 13th-15th centuries, this land was the eastern outskirts of the Golden Horde. Later, until the end of the 16th century, it was part of the Siberian Khanate. In the 18th century, the territory of the present Novosibirsk region became part of the Russian Empire.

Despite the relatively favorable climate, the Russians began to settle here relatively late. The Barabin Tatars were the indigenous people. Today, their total population is about 10,000 people living mainly in the western parts of the region.

The Barabin Tatars were subjected to constant attacks of the Kalmyks (the Oyrates and Teleuts). Russian villages were also under the threat. That’s why people preferred to settle in the north, near Tomsk. Only at the end of the 17th century, Novosibirsk province became attractive to settlers.

More Historical Facts…

The first settlement was founded by the boyar son Alexey Kruglik in 1695. Later, this settlement became the village of Kruglikovo. Today, it is located in Bolotninsky district. In the early 18th century, Berdsky stockaded town was built. Over time, the threat from the nomads decreased and the number of settlers increased.

In 1722, the Siberian line of fortresses along the Irtysh River was constructed. The locals were mainly engaged in soil tilling, fishing and hunting. In the early 19th century, the famous Ural manufacturer Akinfiy Demidov constructed two copper melting plants here - Kolyvansky and Barnaulsky.

In 1893, due to the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the railway bridge across the Ob River, Alexandrovsky settlement was built (from 1895 - Novonikolayevsky). Thanks to its convenient geographical location (the Trans-Siberian Railway crossing the Ob River, transportation ways connecting Siberia with the European part of the Russian Empire), its trade importance grew rapidly. In 1909, Novonikolayevsk became a town. In 1925, it was renamed in Novosibirsk.

Before 1921, the territory of Novosibirsk oblast was part of Tomsk gubernia, from 1921 to 1925 - of Novonikolayevsk gubernia, from 1925 to 1930 - of Siberian krai, from 1930 to 1937 - of West Siberian krai. September 28, 1937, West Siberian krai was divided into Novosibirsk oblast and Altay krai. This date is considered the official date of the region formation.

Novosibirsk Oblast - Features

Novosibirsk Oblast is located in the south east of the East-Siberian Plain, in the steppe, forest-steppe and taiga zones, between the Ob and the Irtysh rivers. The length of the region from west to east - 642 km, from north to south - 444 km.

The southern part of Vasyugan swamp, the largest swamp in the world, occupies the territory in the north and north-west of the province. In the southwest, it borders with Pavlodar oblast of Kazakhstan.

There are about 3,000 lakes on the territory of the Novosibirsk region. The largest lakes are Chany, Ubinskoye, Sartlan. Novosibirsk Reservoir also known as “the Ob Sea” (1,082 sq. km.) was created for Novosibirsk Hydroelectric Power Plant.

The climate is continental. The average temperature in January ranges from minus 16 degrees Celsius in the south and minus 20 degrees Celsius in the north. The average temperature in July - plus 18-20 degrees Celsius.

The largest cities and towns are Novosibirsk (1,621,000), Berdsk (103,500), Iskitim (54,700), Kuybishev (43,000). Novosibirsk is one the largest industrial, transport, scientific, and cultural center of Russia, the third most populous city in the country after Moscow and St. Petersburg. It is also the capital of the Siberian Federal District.

In the historical part of Novosibirsk you can find a lot of preserved monuments of the Russian Empire times. The Soviet era is presented by numerous scientific and cultural attractions, as well as beautiful parks.

There are more than 500 deposits of various mineral resources in Novosibirsk Oblast (coal, refractory clay, peat, anthracite). Natural gas and oil fields are located in the north-western part of the region. There are significant reserves of underground thermal and mineral waters. Forests cover about 4 million hectares, more than 20% of the territory.

Novosibirsk Oblast is one of the most industrially developed regions in Siberia (metal processing and machine building, food, power engineering, non-ferrous metallurgy industries). Heavy industries are concentrated in Novosibirsk, Iskitim and Berdsk.

The regional agriculture specializes in the cultivation of grain, potatoes and vegetables. Dairy cattle breeding, poultry farming and beekeeping are developed. The production of flax plays an important role too. Agricultural development of the territory is not high (about 48%). In general, it has about 25% of all agricultural land in Western Siberia.

A traveler's guide to Novosibirsk, the unofficial capital of Siberia

Trans-Siberian heritage

Residents of Novosibirsk love trains and are proud of the fact that their city played a significant role in the history of the grand Trans-Siberian railway, which spans the breadth of Russia. The railway is such a part of Novosibirsk identity that it is even depicted on the city’s emblem, along with the bridge that crosses the Ob river and two Siberian sables standing on their hind legs.  

In the city, there are as many as five monuments to trains, and an open-air locomotive museum is located in the vicinity of the train station Seyatel’. The museum has more than 100 steam locomotives, diesel locomotives and carriages, reflecting the history of rail transportation in Russia from pre-revolutionary times to the present day. Wondering around the stationary trains and comparing your height with the diameter of the gigantic iron wheels of the first steam locomotives is all very well, but why not climb inside the carriages and see how the nobility once traveled across Russia in pre-revolutionary times? These tours will however need to be booked in advance. The museum opens from 11:00 until 17:00 every day except Mondays. 

Novosibirsk spans both sides of the river Ob. In the early twentieth century, the border of two different timezones passed right through the city which led to a strange situation- morning on the east bank started one hour earlier than on the west bank! The two-kilometer covered metro bridge that crosses the river is considered the longest in the world. Due to the fluctuations in temperature across the year (on average +30 °C to -30 °C), during the summer the metro bridge expands, and in the winter it contracts by half a meter. To counter these effects, the bridge’s supports are equipped with special rollers that allow it to move.   

The cultural center of Siberia

The repertoire of the theatre can be viewed on its official website . The theatre season runs from September to July, and comprises mainly classical performances, like the ballet “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky, Borodin’s opera “Prince Igor” and Verdi’s “La Traviata”.  

The large Siberian sea and ligers

Weekends are best spent at the Novosibirsk zoo . The zoo is known for breeding big cats, although surrounded by controversy, hosts a successful crossing of a tiger and lion, which of course would not otherwise breed in wildlife. Ligers, or exotic cubs of an African lion and Bengal tigress, feel quite comfortable in the Siberian climate and even produce offspring. The zoo is open to visitors year-round, seven days a week, and even has its own free mobile app, Zoo Nsk .

Every year at the beginning of January, the festival of snow culture takes place bringing together artists from across Russia and around the world to participate in a snow sculpting competition. The tradition started in 2000 inspired by the snow festival in Sapporo, Novosibirsk’s twin-city.

Siberian Silicon Valley

Despite the fact that Akademgorodok was built half a century ago in the middle of the uninhabited Siberian taiga, architecturally it was ahead of its time. No trees were destroyed for its construction, and houses were built right in the middle of the forest. A man walking through the woods would seemingly stumble upon these structures. At that time, no one had built anything similar in the world and ecovillages only became fashionable much later.

For residents of the Novosibirsk Akademgorodok is a different world. When you step out the bus or car, you are immediately on one of the hiking paths through the forest, between the scientific buildings and clubs. On a walk through Akademgorodok, it is possible to unexpectedly encounter art-like objects handmade by residents of the city which have been erected as monuments and some monuments fixed up by city authorities. For example, the monument to the laboratory mice, which knits a strand of DNA on to some needles, can be found in the square alongside the Institute of Cytology and Genetics. In Akademgorodok there are many cafes and restaurants, in which it is possible to rest after a long walk. Grab a coffee and go to eat at Traveler’s Coffee , or eat lunch at the grille and bar People’s or Clover .

Winters in the Akademgorodok are slightly colder than in the city, so wrap up. Spring and summer are usually wetter, so waterproof boots are recommended. In the summer the Ob sea provides respite from the heat, so do not forget your swimsuit to go for a dip.

Memento Mori

Among the exhibits of the museum is one dedicated to world funeral culture — hearses, memorial jewellery from the hair of the deceased, samples from a specific photo-genre of  "post mortem", a collection of funeral wear from the Victorian era, deathmasks, statues and monuments. There’s also an impressive collection of coffins. One of them, resembling a fish, was manufactured on a special visit to Novosibirsk by a designer coffin-maker from Africa, Eric Adjetey Anang, who specializes in the production of unusual coffins.

Surprisingly, the crematorium itself does not look at all gloomy in appearance and definitely does not look like infernal scenes from movies, or like crematoriums of other cities that gravitate towards gloomy temple aesthetics. The Novosibirsk crematorium is decorated in “cheerful” orange tones and is surrounded by a park with a children’s playground nearby. A visit to the museum then leaves you with mixed feelings. 

Novosibirsk underground

Tourists from all over the world go down into the Moscow metro to take a ride and a few selfies in the most famous underground museum. The Novosibirsk metro is also quite a museum in itself — it has 13 stations, the most beautiful of which is Gagarinskaya, Sibirskaya and Rechnoy Vokzal.

The ultramodern Gagarinskaya station is like a real cosmos underground. Its technologically themed design includes marble walls with metallic elements, dark blue backlighting and portraits of Yuri Gagarin. The Sibirskaya station looks like an underground treasure trove, decorated by Altai masters craftsmen with mosaics of precious Siberian stones. The Rechnoy Vokzal station is framed with ten glowing stained glass windows depicting the largest cities of Siberia, including Novosibirsk itself, Omsk, Barnaul and others. The platform resembles a big ship sailing on the Ob, from which ancient Siberian cities are visible through its windows.  

How to get there

The easiest way to get to Novosibirsk is by plane with Aeroflot or Novosibirsk airline S7 with one-way tickets from Moscow costing from 200-250 USD. If you decide to take from the train from Moscow, you’ll have to travel approximately a third of the Trans-Siberian Railway. That’s 3,300 kilometers over almost a three-day journey. 

Where to stay

There are many great hotels in Novosibirsk. Amongst the best include a four-star Doubletree hotel by Hilton , which is located near Lenin Square (per room from $200). After renovations and repairs, the congress-hotel Novosibirsk has improved (per room from $100) and is located across from the train station. Less expensive but of a similar standard is the four-star River Park hotel near Rechnoy Vokzal metro station, which costs $80 per night.
